SERIOUS TWO CAR MVA

PROVIDED

The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a motor vehicle accident on May 24th at 4:38 P.M., with the location of 915 West Jericho Turnpike, across from Bobby’s Auto Repair. Arriving units sized up a two vehicle accident blocking traffic in the eastbound lanes. Occupants of the vehicles were able to self-extricate.

Firefighters rescue dog trapped in burning garage Shortly after 2:30 A.M. on May 30th, the Bay Shore FD was alerted for a reported car fire across from 5 Winnifred Street in Bay Shore. First responding unit, 2nd Assistant Chief Jerry Rockfeld, was advised by dispatch that upon recall BSFD was advised that it was a fully in- JUMP TO FILE# volved vehicle fire. 060316128 Once on scene, Chief Rockfeld confirmed that there was a vehicle fire and also extension to a detached garage to the rear of 136 Third Ave.As Chief Rockfeld conducted his size up, Chief of Department John Ippolito Jr., along with E3-1-1 went on the road, at which time Chief Rockfeld transmitted the "Working Fire". Once on scene, the crew of Engine 3-1-1 along with Truck 3-1-4 quickly went to work on knocking down the fast moving fire. During the operation, firefighters rescued a dog which was locked inside the garage that was on fire.

The dog was removed by BSFD Firefighters and handed off to EMS units from Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Inc. and Brentwood Legion Ambulance Service, Inc. for treatment, and later removed

by SCPD units.The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Islip Town Fire Marshal's Office and SCPD Arson Squad.

Oceanside responds to house fire

On Tuesday, May 10th at 9:40 A.M., a member of the Oceanside Fire Department called their dispatcher stating that his neighbor's house on Weidner Avenue was on fire. A second member, Ex Captain William Sitzman who lives nearby, also called dispatch and confirmed that there was a working fire.

Chief of Department JT Madden was on scene in less than 2 minutes and transmitted the signal for a working fire. An aggressive attack by members of Columbia Engine Co.1 and Salamander H.L.& B.Co.1 kept the fire contained to one room.There were no injuries reported. Chief Madden was the Incident Commander and Assistant Chief Kevin Klein ran the operations inside of the home.

Manhasset-Lakeville FD battles house fire On May 22nd, the Manhasset-Lakeville FD responded to a structure fire on Bridge Rd.

Structure fire for Syosset FD Syosset Fire Department responded to a private dwelling fire on Barbara Drive on May 29th.

Fatal fire in Centereach On May 18th, Centereach Firefighters were activated for a reported structure with loud explosions. Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and a report of a subject trapped in a basement. Firefighters entered the heavy smoked filled residence. With visibility at zero, they made an aggressive search and found the unconscious male. They were able to remove him to an awaiting Centereach Ambulance, who rushed the subject to University Trauma Center in Stonybrook.

Centereach Command already put out mutuals to Selden,Farmingville and Ronkonkonma Fire Departments . The fire was brought under control in under 30 minutes, but the lone occupant succumed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.

These veterans were given a wel-

come home by waving flags and banners that they never received when originally returning home from deployment. The Long Island MacArthur Airport arrival area was filled with hundreds of patriotic members of the community. The Veterans were welcomed by grateful civilians who were cheering and thanking them for their service. The honor flight is intended to honor many of these selfless veterans for their duty.

Shortly before 9 A.M. on June 6th, the Bay Shore Fire Department along with Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Inc. were both alerted for a report of a JUMP TO FILE# house fire across 060916105 from 146 Bayway Avenue in Brightwaters Village. First responding BSFD unit was Chief of Department John Ippolito Jr., who was advised by dispatch that they received multiple calls on this alarm. Once on scene, Chief Ippolito took a quick size up and transmitted the "working fire" to responding BSFD units.

The crews of Bay Shore Hose 311 and Truck 314 lead by 2nd Asst.

Chief Jerry Rockfeld made an aggressive interior attack. The quick knock down, combined with a coordinated roof vent resulted in an excellent stop on the fast moving fire.

Also on scene was BSFD Engine 312, Penataquit Hose 313, Ladder 317 and numerous Fire Patrol Units. Kismet FD Mutual Aid Chief and West Islip FD provided the FAST while Islip FD covered the district. Islip Town Fire Marshal, SCFRES, SCPD 3rd Pct and the Arson Squad where also on scene.

Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association celebrates 10th anniversary On May 16th, the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association unveiled a monument at Eisenhower Park to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the organization that prepares teenagers to become firefighters and EMT’s.

PROVIDED BY RUSSELL CURLEY The North Merrick Fire Department was at the New York State transportation building in 1954. Their first aerial ladder was a white, mid-mount on North Merrick (1951). It was later sold in 1962 and is owned today by the Terryville Fire Department in Port Jefferson Station.

On the night of Sunday, April 3rd, a drunk driver crashed into a pickup truck, rolling it over on the roadway in Ronkonkoma, NY. Firefighters from Lakeland immediately went to work trying to free the husband and JUMP TO FILE wife, who were #041716120 trapped within.

Firefighters removed the roof and transported both patients who were in traumatic arrest to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

Serious two car MVA on Jericho Turnpike The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a 16-23 (Ambulance Requested/Motor Vehicle Accident), on May 24th at 4:38 P.M., with the location of 915 West Jericho Turnpike, across from Bobby’s Auto R e p a i r. A r r i v i n g units sized up a two vehicle accident JUMP TO FILE# blocking traffic in 052616108 the eastbound lanes. Occupants of the vehicles were able to self-extricate. Two victims were transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital.

Firefighters on scene secured the vehicles, applied speedy dry to the road and cleaned up debris before opening the two eastbound lanes to traffic.On scene was Chief Fitzpatrick (4-2-32), Rescue 4-2-9, Engines 4-2-4, 4-2-5, Ambulances 4-2-62 and 4-2-65 and Fire Police (4-2-10).

Island ablaze while firefighters fight structure fire On April 20th, the Copiague Fire Department received a call for a working signal on 37 Santa Barbara Road. Upon arrival, they found that the two neighboring houses were also on fire. Mutual Aid was from the Town of Babylon FD, Amityville, Babylon Village, East JUMP TO FILE# Farmingdale, Deer 060516113 Park, North Amityville, North Babylon, West Babylon, North Lindenhurst, Lindenhurst and Wyandanch.

In addition to the house fires, the neighboring Indian Island also caught fire around the same time, causing a massive and stubborn brush fire. Mutual Aid for fireboats was called from Babylon Village, Bayshore, West Islip and Wantagh.

Fully involved furniture warehouse in Wyandanch On May 17th, the Wyandanch Fire Co. was toned out for a working fire on Wyandanch Ave. Upon arrival, the Dinette Furniture warehouse was fully involved.

MVA injures one The East Farmingdale FD was toned out for a 16-23 MVA on Edison Avenue and Field Street. There was only one injury reported.

Early morning fire in condo complex A fire broke out in a condo complex in Port Jefferson during the early morning hours of May 30th. Port Jefferson FD as well as numerous mutual aid departments worked quickly to try to bring the fire under control. They were successfully able to prevent it from spreading throughout the entire row of condos.

Fully involved detached garage fire for Valley Stream FD KEITH LANE/OFD

The Valley Stream FD pulled up to a fully involved detached garage fire on East Hawthorne Avenue on May 23rd.

Potential hazardous package found at post office On Wednesday, May 4th at 5:51 A.M., the Oceanside Fire Department received a call from the Nassau County Police about a potential JUMP TO FILE# hazardous package at 080713101 the Oceanside Post Office. Chief of Department John Madden had all members respond to their quarters to standby while the scene was secured and the package inspected.

Chiefs Madden and Sutton Jr. responded to the post office, along with members from Nassau County Police Emergency Services Unit, Emergency Ambulance Bureau and The Nassau Country Fire Marshal's Hazardous Materials Unit. Engine 246 was brought to the scene to "stand fast" with a hose line, while fire marshals inspected and tested the package. After collecting a sample and running a test, the material was deemed non-hazardous and all fire department units were released by 7:08 A.M. -OCEANSIDE FD

Oceanside FD helps school complete 1,000 Acts of Kindness ceanside Fire Department took part in "The Great Kindness Challenge" at School #8 in Oceanside. Members joined with students, teachers, administrators and parents in an effort to complete 1,000 acts of kindness by Friday, May 13th.

Centereach Fire District and Department honors it’s Veterans On Sunday, June 5th, the Centereach Fire District along with the Centereach Fire Department held their Veteran’s Breakfast to honor those members who JUMP TO FILE# served in the Armed 051616109 Forces since it was organized in 1933.

From 1933 until 2016, the Centereach Fire Department has had the honor of 88 members in it's ranks who have also served as members in the Armed Forces.

Fire Commissioner Julia Wilson stated “It was my honor to attend and witness the pride and respect shown to the military veterans by their fellow volunteers, Board of Fire Commissioners and Suffolk County Legislature. We can never do enough to show our thanks to those who serve their country, especially to this special group who continued their service to our country by volunteering

with the Centereach Fire Department."

Chief Robert Corley also expressed his gratitude to these members of his Fire Department.

“With our busy lives, it never ceases to amaze me that these members give their time to the Fire Department, but then to recognize that they also gave freely with their service to the United States is something that deserves our respect and honor.”

The breakfast was not only attended by Veterans, but was also attended by family and members, wishing to show their gratitude for the service of these members in the Armed Forces. Suffolk County Legislature Leslie Kennedy, Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy and Councilman Kevin Lavalle were also in attendance at the event.

Unusual incident for Bay Shore FD results in bird rescue On May 25th, the Bay Shore FD responded to a report of a brush fire on a pole in Gilbert Park, on South Windsor in Brightwaters Village. Upon arrival of the 2nd Assistant Chief Jerry Rockfled, a large Osprey nest was found on fire with the mother bird and her 4 baby birds.

Upon the arrival of Engine 311 & Ladder 317, the crew under the orders of Chief Rockfeld, JUMP TO FILE# started staging the 060916111 rigs until the power could be secured by PSEG-LI. While awaiting the arrival of PSEG-LI, BSFD consulted with the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center on how to handle the trapped Ospreys. After a brief discussion with EAWRC, the members on scene jumped into action.

Firefighter K. Voges and FF Brian Ball using Ladder 317, made a quick knock down of the fire using a dry chemical extinguisher and then proceeded to remove 4 baby Ospreys. Once removed, FF Fred Crump used a 1" line to mop up the rest of the fire atop the pole.

FF Voges and Ball then returned the birds safely to their nest. The mother bird returned to her little family and all seemed well. Unfortunately, one of the baby Ospreys did not survive the fire and was buried at Gilbert Park by members of the BSFD before returning to quarters.

Firefighters standby for Freeport Nautical Mile Festival During the Freeport Nautical Mile Festival on Saturday, June 4th, 70 members of the Freeport FD were standing by in case any emergencies arose at various locations on the mile. This was required due to the difficulty in moving equipment around with the heavy pedestrian traffic. Mutual Aid for an additional ambulance from Bellmore Merrick VAC and special units from Oyster Bay Fire Co., Atlantic Steamer Fire Co., and East Norwich FD with 6-wheel Gator’s set up for EMS runs were also standing by in Freeport. The Freeport Dive Team Boat was on patrol in case there were any prob-

lems on the water. The Freeport FD Exempts were in attendance with “JUMBO” for residents to get an up close look at this beautiful antique.

Chief of Department Kenneth VanCott was in command of operations with 1st Assistant Chief Matt Colgan manning the command post in the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management Field Comm unit. There were 5 emergency responses during the event on Woodcleft Ave. The Chiefs Office would like to thank all members and our mutual aid units for a job well done.

Nassau County Firematic Awards The 2016 Nassau County Firematic Awards were held on the evening of Wednesday, June 8th, at the Nassau County Legislature building in Mineola. The award ceremony is held each year to recognize the achievements of firefighters from various departments within the Nassau County Fire Service.

Among the departments represented at the 2016 ceremony were: Hempstead, Uniondale, Bellerose, Plandome, Port Washington, Wantagh, Hicksville, Woodmere, Rockville Centre, Farmingdale, East Meadow and North Merrick. Congratulations to all those awarded.
