Roosevelt, Nassau County, NY - On January 2, 2015, a woman was arrested after colliding head on with another vehicle on Babylon Turnpike in Roosevelt while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Two young children were in the backseat of her vehicle.

Southampton assists Santa with deliveries The Southampton fire department helped deliver Santa clause to the ELKS club on CR 39 in Southampton for the children's Christmas party.

Kitchen fire strikes North Merrick town house North Merrick, Nassau County, NY. On January 3, 2015, the North Bellmore Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire in the Barclay town houses at 1425 Jerusalem Ave in North Merrick.

First on scene was Chief of Department David Marshall.

Upon arrival, Chief Marshall was confronted with a fully involved

kitchen fire. Shortly after 1st Assistant Chief Michael Rut and 3rd Assistant Chief Mark DiRenzo arrived with the first due engine and truck company.

The fire was contained to the one town hosue and no other resi-

dents received damage to their homes. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries at the scene.

Mutual aid from Bellmore, East Meadow, North Merrick, Wantagh and Uniondale Fire Departments assisted.

Operation Santa HAROLD L JACOBS

The Members and explorers of the Melville Fire Department held their Operation Santa. They had trucks going through the district with Santa and elves giving out candy canes and collecting food for those in need.

Two car MVA in Shirley Shirley, NY. On the night of December 30, 2014, the Mastic Fire Department was toned out for an MVA at Montauk Highway and Garden place. Fire department units arrived on the scene to find a car crashed into a pick up truck. Firefighters placed speedy dry down on the fluids in the roadway. Fire police took care of the traffic to keep it flowing. The extent of injuries is unknown.

At 2:51 p.m. on January 8th on one of the coldest days of the new year, East Meadow Fire Department Dispatch received a call reporting a house fire on Bryant Lane. Immediately dispatch alerted the pagers of Engines 1, 2, 3, 4, and Ladders 1, and 2.

At 2:53 p.m., 1st Assistant Chief John McGee radioed his re- JUMP TO FILE# sponse. He was 010915103 immediate followed by Engine 612.

Arriving on the scene just six minutes after the phone alarm, First Due Engine 612 found smoke pouring from the home prompting Captain Andrew Carpentier to transmit a Signal 98 First pumper in connected to a hydrant, all other responding units prepared for a firefight.

Seconds later, Captain Carpentier upgraded the alarm transmitting a Signal 10 (working fire re-alerting the general alarm for additional manpower, while adding Rescue 5 and a RIT).

As 1st Assistant Chief McGee arrived on the scene to establish command, size up the scene, and weight his resources coming in, members of Engine 2 were scampering to connect to the hydrant and pull the attack hose lines to the front door.

Minutes later, Ladder 617 and Heavy Rescue 616 arrived on scene to carry out their assignments for the interior attack, search, and rescue, and exterior assignments of laddering and ventilation.

Members of both companies equipped with self contained breathing apparatus, forced entry through the front door, located the fire in the kitchen, and began their attack.

1st Assistant Chief James Kane soon arrived on the scene and carried out his command role assignment.

The frigid temperatures turned water into ice within minutes, creating slippery conditions for all firefighters.

Within 15 minutes of arrival, all visible fire was knocked down and additional resources from neighboring departments began to

fill the street.

The aggressive attack of first in crews made the difference in confining the main body of fire to the kitchen; however, the intense heat and acrid smoke caused considerable damage in all first and second floor areas.

A family pet was removed from the home, surviving the fire.

In all, more than 60 East Meadow volunteers responded to the blaze, with another 25 volunteers from Levittown, Wantagh, North Bellmore, North Merrick, and Westbury Fire Department, who either supplemented manpower at the scene, covered RIT assignments, or covered empty East Meadow firehouses in case of others alarms.

The cause of the fire was put in the hands of the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office.

Damage to the home could reach $75,000. There were no injuries.

Fire at landscaping store Huntington Station, NY. On December 8, 2014, the Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to a fire at Coastal Designs, a landscaping company with a store. Fire was found in the store and crews went to work immediately.

Chief Frank McQuade set up command and called in mutual aid from Melville Fire Department, Syosset Fire Department, Huntington First Aid Squad as well as Huntington for a standby. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. The investigation into the cause and origin is ongoing.

CO leak in Melville Melville, NY. On December 2, 2014, the Melville Fire Department responded to a CO call at a senior citizen's complex. Upon arrival, they found that the CO readings were high and coming from the stove area. They relieved the CO by using fans and a service company was called.

Wire fire in Southampton On November 24th at 9:55 a.m., the Southampton Fire Department was called for the report of a tree on fire in Watermill. Upon Chief Dennis Roy's arrival, it was determined to be a primary wire down on the ground arcing. Due to strong winds, a tree branch fell causing it to take the primary wire with it. The road was completely shut down until PSEG arrived and was able to shut the power off and remove the tree. Fire police was utilized to shut the road down in both direcChief Dennis Roy was in charge of the scene.

Elmont works a basement fire On December 16 at about 2:15 p.m., Nassau County FireCom alerted the Elmont Fire Department for an oil burner fire on Miriam Court. While units were enroute, further information was received, via a 911 caller, reporting a house fire at the same location. When Chief of the Department Brian Schriefer arrived at the scene, he immediately transmitted a Signal 10.

Engine 3 and Ladder 2 were first on the scene. Those units along with other Elmont firefighters were able to extinguish the basement fire without major incident. There were no reported injuries.

Smithtown Rescue 9 delivers an adaptive tricycle to an area child delivered by a special Santa For the second year, Smithtown Fire Department Rescue Company 9 escorted Santa to an event held at the home of a family recipient of Share the Voice.

The organization was established to enhance the lives of disabled children. Recreational use of adaptive tricycles brings many rewards. It builds self-esteem and confidence, provides stress relief, increases social skills, strengthens weak muscles and stretches tight ones, and increases balance and gross motor skills.

Owning a tricycle helps physically and cognitively challenged children become more independent and gives them the ability to socialize with typical children in their neighborhood. It gives them an outlet to be just like the other kids!

Their program aims to provide these special children with an adaptive tricycle built for them

and their specific abilities.

On hand and traveling with Rescue 9 to present the tricycle and bring holiday cheer was Santa Claus also known as legendary WWE wrestler Mick Foley.

A Long Island resident, Foley has dedicated his post wrestling career to writing children’s books, guest speaking across the country and participating in philanthropic causes.

Melville, NY. The Melville Fire Department responded to a recent house fire in December. The fire was located in the master bedroom and quickly knocked down. There was one female occupant, who was transported to the hospital by Melville Fire Department Ambulance. The cause of the fire is not known at this time. No other injuries were reported.

MVA in Southampton Uniondale battles blaze on Smith Street The Southampton Fire Department was called out to a heavy rescue on County Route 39 and Tuckahoe Lane on December 4th at 7 p.m. The first chief on scene advised that the heavy rescue wasn't needed. The vehicle made an abrupt left and ended up on a stonewall. No injuries were reported.

Uniondale, Nassau County, NY. On December 15, 2014, Uniondale Fire Department was dispatched to 867 for the report of a house fire. Police arrived on scene to find a working fire.

They quickly stretched hose lines and went to work.

Mutual aid arrived from North Merrick, Roosevelt, and South Hempstead Fire Departments as well as an ambulance from Roosevelt. North Bellmore sent a FAST team, but crews were put to work. East Meadow re-

sponded and became the new FAST team. West Hempstead, Munson, Westbury and Franklin Square stood by.

An investigation into the cause

Car fire for Southampton The Southampton Fire Department was called out to a car fire on December 6th at 12:01 p.m. The car was located on Hillcrest Avenue in Southampton Village. The engine compartment was fully engulfed. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and the scene was turned over to the village fire marshals office. Chief Dennis Roy was in charge.

Car vs sign Shirley, NY. On the evening of December 22, 2014, the Mastic Fire Department and Mastic EMS were toned out for an MVA at the Burger King on Montauk Highway. Mastic’s chief arrived on the scene along with Mastic EMS to find that they had a one car MVA. A large rock stopped the vehicle just shy of hitting a sign. Mastic EMS transported one person to a local hospital.

Freeport fights blaze at vacant commercial

Santa recently came to Mastic on a fire truck.

Freeport, NY. Freeport responded to the report of a building fire just before 6pm on January 11th at South Columbus Avenue and Sunrise Highway at a vacant commercial establishment.

The fire was found in the stairwell on the second floor. Mutual aid was called. Baldwin sent ladder

Baldwin’s FAST team was put to work.

bulance to the scene to assist. The fire was quickly knocked down and all units were up within an hour.

The fire is under investigation by local officials. 2nd Assistant Chief Kenneth VanCott was in charge at the scene.

Cat rescue during extreme cold weather BILLKELLY.SMUGMUG.COM

Car into building in North Bellmore On November 8, 2014 at approximately 10:00 p.m., the North Bellmore Fire Department received a call for a motor vehicle accident with reports of a car into a building at 2608 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.

Upon the first unit’s arrival, Chief David Marschall quickly verified that all occupants were out of the vehicle, and started to assess the scene and encountered a SUV that

had struck the corner of the building knocking out the corner support and the electrical feed coming into the building. At this time, North Bellmore’s TRT team was activated to further assess the damage and secure the building.

Upon further assessment of the

building, the power company was notified to cut the power due to the damage caused by the vehicle.

Once the power had been shut off the car was removed, and proper shoring was constructed into place securing the corner of the building from any further collapse. North Bellmore was assisted by the Bethpage and Massapequa TRT teams.

At 1:46 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7th, the Mastic Fire Department was activated for an animal rescue at a residence on Forest St. The resident's cat climbed a tree during the morning hours of the previous day and had already spent over 24 hours exposed to the frigid temperatures and occasional 45mph wind gusts.

An earlier rescue attempt by a local animal rescue group frightened the cat, causing it to climb even higher to a height of approximately 25 feet, where it proceeded to get its tail wedged between two branches. It was then

unable to move at all.

With temperatures expected to reach near 0 degrees with the windchill factored in during the coming night, the fire department responded with Aerial Tower 512-14 under the direction of Chief of Department Rudy Sunderman Jr. and safely removed the cat from the tree. The uninjured cat was returned to the appreciative resident.

Bedroom fire in Plainview house Plainwiew, NY. On January 10, 2015, the Plainview Fire Department responded to a house fire with fire coming out of a second floor window.

Upon arrival of the fire department, the occupants of the home were outside and all accounted for.

The Melville Fire Department was stationed at Plainview's headquarters to answer calls.

The fire was in in a second floor bedroom and hampered by freezing weather.

The fire was quickly knocked down without injuries to residents or first responders.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by local officials.

Afternoon office fire in Smithtown The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a reported commercial structural fire on December 23rd at 3:57 p.m. with the location of 59 Landing Avenue. It was quickly upgraded to a working fire.

Occupants were evacuated.

A therapy treatment room at Physical Therapy and Beyond caught fire. A line was stretched and the fire was quickly extinguished, Damage was confined to the one

room. Fans were deployed to vent the interior of the offices. A search took place in the structure and on the roof establishing that there was no extension of the fire beyond the treatment room.

59 Landing Avenue also houses the offices of Suffolk County Legis-

lator Robert Trotta. His offices were not damaged, but a smoke condition existed and was also fan vented by the Department.

Woman arrested after head on crash with two children in vehicle Roosevelt, Nassau County, NY. On January 2, 2015, a woman was arrested after colliding head on with another vehicle on Babylon Turnpike in Roosevelt while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Two young children were in the backseat of her vehicle.

The driver was heading southbound on Babylon Turnpike and crossed over into the southbound lanes, hitting a second vehicle driven by a 21 year old woman.

That driver was packaged and

transported to a local hospital for treatment of what appear to be nonlife threatening injuries.

Nassau County ESU used tools to extricate one of the drivers.

According to published reports, the children were not injured and were released to family.

Melville hosts Children’s Holiday Party Melville, NY. On December 14, 2014, the Melville Fire Department held it's annual children's holiday party. They had an entertainer making balloon animals and figures as well as a magician and of course Santa, who gave every child a gift .

Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center of Garden City joined with other Nassau County volunteer firefighters to conduct a live residential fire of Christmas trees to emphasize the importance of vigilant hydrating of all nat- JUMP TO FILE# ural Christmas 120514110 trees.

The event’s purpose is to educate the public during a holiday season that can be fraught with home fires due to under-watered Christmas trees, whether on display in a house or apartment, or later, when discarded or moved to a spot outside the residence. The exercise demonstrates the unimaginable rapidity of a dry tree fire and emphasizes the urgent need to adequately hydrate trees and to properly dispose of them.

The event took place December 3rd at the Nassau County V.E.E.B. Fire Service Academy in Old Bethpage and utilized two residential “burn buildings”. The buildings, “private dwelling structures” are used to train firefighters in the most common type of fire on Long Island: residential.

When decorating homes with trees, electric lights and candles to create a festive atmosphere, the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center reminds the public to properly use

all holiday items, according to instructions, as they can cause fires, injuries and even death.

“The holiday season can indeed be the most wonderful time of the year, as it says in the beloved song, but a fire, even a small one, can ruin the family’s celebrations,” said Museum Chief Safety Instructor John V. Murray.

“It is important to avoid using older electric light strands with

frayed wiring or broken bulbs, and do not allow your Christmas tree to dry out; it must be kept continually hydrated. We see more fires happen during the holidays, so we are urging folks to follow the basic safety tips, keeping this festive season a safe and happy one.”

Community Ambulance and Bohemia Fire Department help ring in the holiday season at Brookhaven Hospital Sayville, NY. On Friday, December 12th, the members of Community Ambulance Company and Bohemia Fire Department helped spread the joy of the JUMP TO FILE# holiday season to 121514108 children at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital following a multiple-vehicle accident in Bohemia.

Thirteen children from a Commack Youth Group were traveling to Sayville High School for a holiday party, where they were going to have dinner and receive presents from Santa Clause.

While en route to the party, the van was involved in a multiplevehicle accident on Lakeland Avenue.

Community Ambulance received the alarm at 5:06 p.m., and responded with four ambulances and multiple first responders.

After realizing the amount of potential patients, a bus was also requested from Bohemia Fire Department.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries; however, it was determined that the entire van of children needed to be seen at the hospital. Utilizing a triage system, all of the children were given tags with their information, and moved from the inoperable van to the Bohemia Fire Department bus for transport to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. In total, seventeen patients were transported from the accident to local hospitals.

Since the children were going to the hospital, they were unable to make it to their scheduled dinner at the Sayville High School, which was an event they had been looking forward to for quite some time. It is at this time that the members of Community Ambulance, as well as Bohemia Fire Department, went above and beyond the call of duty to truly demonstrate the motto of “neighbors helping neighbors.�

The Chiefs of the two departments reached out to Sayville High School and made arrangements to pick up the presents intended for the children and bring them to the hospital. This way the children would not miss out com-

pletely on their night.

In addition, Santa Clause himself decided he wanted to hand deliver the presents to the children, so he boarded a Bohemia fire engine covered in holiday lights and rode to Brookhaven Hospital. Members of both departments came out to show support, and even employees of the hospital joined in the event.

Once the two departments arrived at Brookhaven Hospital with the gifts, the children were about to be discharged. Workers from their group gathered them all together

and told them there was a surprise waiting for them outside the emergency room. As they walked out together and realized Santa Clause was waiting for them, smiles came over their faces as they ran toward the ambulance.

Each child climbed aboard the ambulance, sat with Santa Clause, and received a present before leaving the hospital.

Community Ambulance Company, along with Bohemia Fire Department, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, and Sayville High School

managed to turn this negative situation completely around for the children. What would have been a terrible memory of a car accident and a missed party turned into a fun celebration they will not soon forget.

This was all because of the dedicated volunteers of these two great departments, who gave up their Friday night in order to bring some holiday cheer to the children involved in the auto accident.

Hazmat call in Melville Melville, NY. On December 13, 2014, the Melville Fire Department responded to a Hazmat call at an industrial building. A maintenance worker mixed some cleaners and the mixture fell over causing a strong smell and a gas. In all, the building was evacuated and four people were taken to the hospital by Melville Fire Department Ambulance.

MVA on Black Friday Melville, NY. On November 28, 2014, the Melville Fire Department responded to a car accident on Walt Whitman Road.

There were people injured and taken to the hospital by Melville Fire Department ambulances. The engine crew on scene also put speedy dry on the road. The cause of the accident is being investigated by local officials.
