Vehicle Fire in Commack Commack, NY - At approximately 12:31 P.M. on June 29th, the Commack Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department responded to a vehicle fire in the driveway of 90 Roxbury Drive. Units arrived to find an engine compartment fire, with no exposure issues. The fire was quickly extinguished without incident and there were no reported injuries.

Flying Dutchmen Victorious in First Competition of 2017, Setting State Mark in Motor Pump Contest Lindenhurst, NY - The West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen racing team opened the 2017 firematic competition season on June 3rd in Lindenhurst, with a victory in the 57th annual running of the Long Island Invitational Parade and Drill. Amassing 25 points in the eight-contest drill, the Flying Dutchmen edged out their 14 competitors to earn top honors in the day-long event.

The Bay Shore Redskins placed second overall with 18 points, while the Central Islip Hoboes captured third place with 17 points. The North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers’ 15 points and the Islip Wolves’ 14 points earned each team fourth and fifth place respectively.

The victory marks the 20th time West Sayville has won the Long Island Invitational Drill since its inception in 1961. The win also bolsters the Flying Dutchmen’s claim as the team with the most victories in the Island-wide tournament, having more than three times as many wins than any other team.

JUMP TO FILE #062217110 Through the first six events, the Dutchmen amassed 15 points and were tied for second overall with North Lindenhurst, both trailing Central Islip who led the drill with 17 points. As West Sayville left the starting line in the Motor Pump contest, the team of Richard Quenzer, William Hothan, Frank R. Miller Jr., Robert Noonan, Patrick Garrett, Ryan Huguenin, Ryan Tenney, Daniel Tenney, Kevin Candido, Gary A. Schaum and Joseph Quenzer were destined for history.

The Flying Dutchmen shattered the New York State record in Motor Pump with a time of 5.45 seconds, bettering the old record which was jointly held by the West Islip Raiders and the Central Islip Hoboes at 5.47 seconds, and was only the 6th time in the last 35 years that this record had been broken. The record setting performance gave the Dutchmen five points in the contest, resulting in

their first overall lead of the day, and a lead they would not relinquish.

The Flying Dutchmen compiled their points by placing second in Three Man Ladder (6.48 seconds), second in Motor Hook and Ladder Class C (9.33 seconds), tied for first in Motor Hose Class B (7.97 seconds), and tied for second in Efficiency (9.68 seconds), first in Motor Pump (5.45 seconds) and second in Buckets (22.92 seconds).

The 2017 Long Island Invitational Champions are coached by Frank R. Miller Sr., Robert Marra and G. Scott Schrader, led by Captain Michael Marra and Lieutenants Frank R. Medford, NY - On June 9th just after 7:00 A.M., Medford firefighters and Medford Ambulance Service were activated for a reported heavy rescue on Granny Rd. in Medford. As units arrived, one subject was found trapped in the car and the other driver was found hurt in the truck. Medford firefighters used jaws and cutters to remove both driver side doors, and the post to free the pinned driver. Mutual aid was supplied by Coram, who responded with an ambulance and transported one subject.

Lancaster County Hazmat once ran this 1974 Mack CF 1250/500/380 Foam. The unit once saw service with the Mount Sinai Fire Department in Suffolk County, NY.

Mastic FD Responds to Overnight Car Fire

Shirley, NY - On Monday, June 12th at about 12:05 A.M., the Mastic FD was activated for a report of a car fire at 427 William Floyd Parkway. Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. was the first to arrive and advised that he had a fully involved auto at the location. Unit-1 responded to the scene first-due. Upon arriving, the crew from Unit-1 went to work, stretching a total of two lines. Firefighters went to work putting water on the fire and made a quick knockdown. After ensuring that the fire was out, the scene was turned back over to officers from the Suffolk County Police 7th Precinct. Police eventually called for a PD wrecker to tow the vehicle. No further details were available.

Heavy Rescue Conducted at Commack MVA Commack, NY - The Commack Fire Department, along with Commack Volunteer Ambulance and Suffolk County PD, responded to a motor vehicle accident with heavy rescue in front of 3010 Jericho Turnpike on Sunday, June 18th, just before 12:00 P.M. Personnel arrived to find a two-car collision with one person trapped. Firefighters from R9 and officers from SCPD ESU used hydraulic equipment to free the occupant for transport to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jericho Turnpike eastbound was shut down for the duration of the incident.

Driver Crashes into Gas Pumps, Overturns Vehicle

Northport, NY - At approximately 4:05 P.M. on Friday, June 16th, the East Northport Fire Department responded to a reported overturned vehicle at 670 Fort Salonga Road. Crews arrived to find a vehicle on its roof after crashing into gas pumps, with the driver self-extricated. While EMS crews evaluated the driver, firefighters secured both vehicles and cleaned up a fuel spill. The Town of Huntington Fire Marshal was requested for further investigation.

North Babylon Fire Company runs this 1995 International/Southern Coach 4x4 500/500 brush truck.

Mastic Beach, NY - On Wednesday, June 14th at approximately 12:33 P.M., the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Suffolk County Police were dispatched for the report of a fire in the vicinity of Cypress Dr. and Ceader Rd. East.

On arrival, officers from the 7th Precinct advised the correct location, which would be 163 Beaver Dr., and that there was heavy fire showing.

Captain Jeff McGown of the Mastic Beach FD immediately requested a

The fire was in a garage-type area in the back of the house, and also had extended to the rear of the house. Explosions were also reported due to propane tanks. Firefighters began to put water on the fire. Mastic Fire Department was the first mu-

tual aid to be called and on arrival, Chief Rudy Sunderman assisted with Command duties. Once the fire was out, firefighters conducted extensive overhaul operations.

No injuries were reported. Mutual Aid was provided by the Mastic, Brookhaven and Center Moriches Fire Departments. EMS rehab was provided by Mastic Beach, Shirley and Mastic Ambulance Companies.

Long Island Super Apparatus Photo Shoot Another Success Great River, NY - The third annual super apparatus photo shoot at Hacksher State Park, June 11th, assembled some 60 apparatus buffs from several states to photograph antique and modern firefighting equipment JUMP TO FILE # in the park setting. 061317100 Historian Tom Rinelli, a member of the Friends of Islip Fire Fighters, Inc., organized the shoot under his successful command structure. Assistance was supplied by many local firefighters, fire police and friends. There was a variety of firefighting equipment, such as a hand-drawn ladders to modern tower ladders.

There was even a fire service bicycle!

About 50 pieces of apparatus were part of the event, which included privately owned and municipal vehicles. Participants had to pre-register and on the morning of the shoot, the photographers checked in at the command post.

They received a wrist band to allow them to enter the area that was set aside for individual apparatus photography.

Fire apparatus reported to the command post as well, and then lined up in two rows. Two rigs

were called in at a time and positioned in the sun by designated photo coordinators. Then, the photographers took turns walking between the two positioned apparatus to photograph them.

Again, Mother Nature cooperated with Rinelli, providing a blue sky plus a breeze. Before, during and after the shoot, refreshments were available. This was all done in cooperation with Rinelli's business, Fire & Rescue Equipment Sales.

After the individual photos were obtained, the rigs were relocated to the opposite end of this section of the park for a group shot, taken by Rinelli from the bucket of a tower ladder. Drone photos were also secured.

The shoot started promptly at 9:00 A.M. and was completed before noon. Apparatus that were photographed represented manufacturers past and present, that brought back memories of those who served before us.

Again, appreciation is extended to all of the fire companies and private apparatus owners for participating. Kudos to Tom Rinelli and the Long Island Fire Apparatus Photo Shoot Committee members, who made this event so successful.

Serious Accident Closes LI Expressway During Rush Hour Brentwood, NY - Just after 4:15 P.M. on June 1st, Brentwood firefighters responded to a reported heavy rescue with entrapment on the Long Island Expressway eastbound, at the merge for Wicks Road. The Brentwood FD and SCPD ES SCPD Highway officer worked to free the driver of the SUV using hydraulic tools. The SUV collided with the back of a truck, injuring the driver. The other driver was freed and then rushed by an awaiting helicopter to a local trauma center with serious injuries.

Building Collapses in East Northport RUSSELL CURLEY

East Northport, NY - During the late afternoon hours on Sunday, June 11th, the Suffolk County Police and East Northport Fire Department responded to 318 Larkfield Road for a reported building collapse. Upon arrival, crews discovered the front canopy of a single-story building that had completely collapsed. Firefighters checked the building for further structural damage and to deem the stability to be safe. There were no reported injuries and the building inspector was notified for further investigation.

Crews Respond to Commack Warehouse Fire RON JEFFERS

North Amityville Fire Company Firefighter Jimmie L. McGruder, a member of the Board of Governors, has served his community for 52-years. He stands with his pride and joy, a 1961 American LaFrance 900 Series 1000-GPM pumper.

Commack, NY - The Commack Fire Department received a call for a reported commercial structure fire around 5:55 P.M. on June 14th, located at 70 Austin Boulevard. The call was taken by Suffolk County 911 operators for smoke in the building.

Suffolk County Police were the first to arrive and reported an active fire in the building. Chief Barry (2-11-33) arrived shortly after and entered the building to find a heavy smoke condition and

JUMP TO FILE #061517108 the sprinkler heads active. The alarm was then re-toned for manpower. Shortly after, fire was discovered in the stockroom and a working fire was transmitted, bringing in mutual aid from the Hauppauge, Smithtown and Brentwood Fire Departments.

Firefighters gained access through the front door and

stretched hand-lines to knock down the rest of the fire. Crews from the truck company, along with the Hauppauge Fire Department gained access from the rear to begin ventilation while crews on the roof began ventilation as well. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MVA with Entrapment in Hauppauge Hauppauge, NY - The Hauppauge Fire Department and Central Islip Hauppauge Ambulance responded to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment in front of Sunoco Gas Station on Motor Parkway, near Expressway Drive South, on Tuesday night, June 13th, around 9:57 P.M. Crews arrived to find the driver of the vehicle pinned. Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to free the victim, who was then airlifted to the hospital.

Mastic FD Battles Early Morning Inferno Shirley, NY- On Saturday, June 24th, just after 1:00 A.M., the Mastic Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire at 3 Roberts Rd., off Hounslow Road.

Chief Rudy Sunderman Jr. was the first on scene and requested a reactivation on a working fire in a single-story home.

Unit 5-12-1 was the first-due engine and on arrival, the crew went to work, stretching lines and securing a water supply. Mutual aid

JUMP TO FILE #062517102 was called into the scene from surrounding departments. Crews were able to make a quick knockdown of the fire, keeping it from spreading to the surrounding homes; however, there was extensive overhaul that needed to be done.

Nobody was in the home at the time of the incident and no injuries

were reported. Mutual aid on scene was provided by Brookhaven, Ridge and Mastic Beach, with Manorville FD standing by at Mastic's HQ in case other alarms came in. Mastic and Shirley Ambulance were also on scene to perform firefighter rehab support.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal and Suffolk County PD Arson Section.

Woman Hurt After Driving into Family Dollar Store Bellport, NY - Just before 7:45 P.M. on June 19th, the driver of a vehicle crashed through a building, sending the driver to the hospital after a brick column crashed through the windshield. The accident caused major structural damage to the brand new Family Dollar store on Montauk Highway in Bellport. The driver was taken to a local trauma center with unknown injuries. Bellport and Hagerman firefighters, as well as Suffolk County tech rescue teams were requested to the scene to help secure the building.

Hicksville Fire Department still owns their 1960 Mack B 1000/350.

Massive Apartment Fire Breaks Out in Hauppauge Hauppauge, NY - The Hauppauge Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire at 562 New Highway around 2:15 P.M. on Thursday, June 8th. The fire took roughly one hour and 30 minutes to bring under control. One firefighter suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to an area hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
