Firefighters save resident from blaze

On Saturday, February 13th at 8:17 a.m., the Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 88 North Main St in Southampton Village. Police officers arrived on scene first and had headquarters retone it as a 13/35. The fire was in a barn that was up against a house. When crews entered the house, there was a male subject still inside. They assisted him out and he was not injured. The fire was driven by the wind. Crews were able to knock the fire down within the hour. Southampton Village Ambulance was requested with Southampton Town Ambulance. Hampton Bays FD provided RIT, North Sea FD for a truck to the scene, Bridgehampton FD stood by at Southampton and Sag Harbor stood by for North Sea. One firefighter was injured after falling on the ice and was transported to SH hospital. Chief Michael Kampf was in charge of the scene.

At 3:01 a.m. on March 3rd, the Southampton Fire Department was called out to the report of a structure fire on Seven Ponds Rd in Watermill.

Officer Charles Knoebel and Ed JUMP TO FILE# McIntyre of the 030416100 Southampton village police were on patrol nearby and heard the call on the radio.

They arrived on scene within two minutes of the call and found a heavy smoke and fire condition.

Dispatch retoned it out as a working structure fire. The officers spoke with a male subject, who stated he got out of the house with a dog, but a lady was still inside.

Without regard for themselves, they entered the building and assisted the female out. She was unaware the house was on fire.

The first unit arrived on scene and quickly started to douse the fire.

RIT was requested from Hampton Bays and Sag Harbor Fire Departments. North Sea was requested for a truck to the scene and Bridgehampton to stand by at Southamptons main fire house on Hampton Road. Southampton Volunteer Ambulance with Southampton Village and Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance were on standby for firefighter assessment.

Crews battled the 20+ mph winds and the below freezing temperatures while extinguishing the fire. Firefighters’ gear was freezing up along with the hoses. Chief Michael Kampf was the chief in charge.

Two injured on busy Selden roadway On February 25, 2016 just after 5:30 p.m., firefighters from Selden responded to a two car accident on busy Route 25 in Selden. While firefighters secured the scene, members of Selden Fire Department Ambulance Company attended to two patients and transported at least one to an area hospital for treatment.

Smithtown first responders honored for swift cardiac arrest aid On December 9, 2015, the Smithtown Fire Department responded to a cardiac arrest at Gold’s Gym at 100 Landing Avenue. Jeff Press, a Hauppauge resident who was working out, suffered a cardiac arrest in the weight area of the gym.

Fortunately, Smithtown Fire Department Captain Joe Palazzo along with Lieutenant Andrew Kelly were working out in the gym at the same time.

Palazzo quickly transmitted an alarm to the department for EMS and fire response to the scene.

While waiting for units to arrive, a team comprised of emergency personnel, who fortunately were all working out at the time, assisted in CPR. Help was rendered by Palazzo, Kelly, Kings Park firefighters Michael Byrne and Robert Becker, as well as a North Shore LIJ Hospital Paramedic Gary Ritter.

Palazzo raced to retrieve Gold’s AED unit. When the pads were administered to Jeff Press, the AED failed to function properly. The team overcame the problem and continued to administer CPR. Also arriving on the scene rapidly to assist with CPR was Suffolk County Police Officer Keith Weinberg. Palazzo and Weinberg raced to his sector car to retrieve his police AED unit and put it to work on Press.

While CPR and AED analysis was underway, in rapid succession, Smithtown Fire District and Department EMS personnel arrived on the scene to administer advance life support and prepare Press for an ambulance ride to St. Catherine of Siena Hospital.

As a result of their quick thinking, rapid response and determination to save Press’s life, those involved were recommended for either Life Saving Awards or Unit EMS Citations.

JUMP TO FILE #021016105 Presented with Life Saving Awards were Captain Joseph Palazzo SFD, Lieutenant Andrew Kelly SFD, Paramedic Joseph Lesnick SFD, Paramedic Sean Brewer, Smithtown Fire District, EMT Michael Byrne, KPFD, Firefighter Robert Becker, KPFD, Paramedic Gary Ritter, NSLIJ, and Police Officer Keith Weinberg.

Unit Citations were awarded to additional Smithtown Fire Department responding personnel, Assistant Chief Pat Diecidue, Lieutenant Mathew Creamer, Lieutenant Matthew Raia, Lieutenant Christopher Harford, Lieutenant Dave Lewis, and firefighter and EMS personnel Rick Asker, Michael Douglas, Kiefer Kleister, Joseph Larocco, Ryan Burke, Tim Murphy, Samantha Siegel, Amanda Tamburro, Ted Caputo and Brian Bilicki.

Jeff Press survived and was released from St. Catherine on December 17, 2015.

On Monday, February 9, 2016, Press, along with his family and many friends visited the Smithtown Fire Department during it’s monthly meeting to pay special tribute to those, who assisted in saving his life.

The Press Family presented tokens of appreciation and a special cake to the department. Smithtown firefighters and EMS personnel are members of the community and prepared to render assistance to those in need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In this instance, department members of both the Smithtown and Kings Park Fire Departments were ready, out of uniform, to assist a fellow member of the community.

Smithtown displays the Colors at MSG

Members of Smithtown Fire Department Engine Company 3 served as Color Guard for the New York Rangers game on Sunday, February 14th. The Color Guard were accompanied by FDNY Firefighter Regina Wilson, who had performed the national anthem at Rangers, Islanders, Yankees and Mets games.

Paramedic injured in crash Late on Sunday night, February 28, 2016, Lakeland firefighters and Suffolk Police were called to the intersection of Nichols Road and the service road to the Long Island Expressway.

A Lakeland Fire Department Paramedic unit was involved in a crash with another car.

JUMP TO FILE #022916100 It was reported that the unit was responding to an ambulance call when the crash happened.

The medic car ended up on top of the front of the other car.

Both drivers were taken to local hospitals, luckily, with non-life threatening injuries.

171st Annual Washington Day Parade

The Greenport Fire Department kicked off their 171st Annual Washington Day Parade on February 13th.The outside temperature was 5 degrees, but the bravest still marched with the furthest fire department coming as far as New Hyde Park. Also firefighters got to see the Firefighter FDNY Fireboat, which was docked nearby.

Fatal garage fire in Shirley Shirley NY. On the early morning of February 7th, Mastic Beach FD and Mastic Beach EMS were toned out for a structure fire at 29 Manor Drive.

SCPD arrived and advised of a working fire. The Mastic beach fire chief requested that his department be retoned for a working fire. In addition, an engine from Mastic FD and a RIT fron Brookhaven were

Firefighters arrived on the scene and were met with a well involved detached garage.

Firefighters made a hard attack on the fire. After knocking the flames down, firefighters did a

search and found a man, who was DOA at the scene.

The fire was so hot that it melted the siding on the house. The Mastic Beach fire chief requested fire marshals to the scene. Crime investigators were requested to determine the cause of the fire and the death of the resident.

Woman arrested for arson at blaze On January 30th at 12:28 p.m., the Brentwood Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Claywood Drive. The fire, which was mostly exterior, was set by a Maria Ramirez, who was supposedly upset with her husband. She lit his clothes on fire outside the home. She claimed she didn't intend to damage the house. Ramirez was arrested on the scene by Suffolk County police arson squad and charged with fourth-degree arson. No injuries were reported.

Quick knock on second floor On Wednesday, March 2nd at 11:44 a.m., the Wyandanch Vol. Fire Company was activated by Babylon Central Fire Alarm fire a structure fire in the vicinity of South 27th and Garden City Ave. Babylon Central was receiving numerous phone calls and Suffolk County Police were on scene confirming a working fire. The corrected address was 103 South 27th Street.

No injuries were reported. 1-10-30 was in charge of the operation.

W.W.H.A.C. stood by at the scene. The Town of Babylon fire marshals are investigating the cause.

The Elmont Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision occuring at approximately 2:50 p.m. in which a vehicle traveling on Elmont Road struck an electrical pole just south of Village Avenue. This was near the location that an Elmont Memorial student was killed earlier this month. Although the vehicle was heavily damaged, the driver was checked at the scene by NCPD ambulance technicians, but was not reportedly injured.

Elmont douses fire in bitter cold

The Elmont Fire Department responded to a house fire on Madison Street west of Cross Street.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 14th, the Elmont Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire. Assistant Chief Ronald Conti was the first on scene and reported a working fire in the kitchen of a one and a half story dwelling. Elmont Fire Department units quickly arrived on the scene and, despite working in bitter cold temperatures, were able to quickly extinguish the blaze with no reported injuries. Nassau County Fire Marshals were requested to respond by EFD Chief Robert Schriefer to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Smoke showing in Mastic Mastic, NY. On February 12th, Mastic Fire Department was toned out for a reported structure fire at 7A Abby Lane.

The Mastic engine found smoke showing from a one story private residence, radioing back to base to have it retoned for a working fire. They also requested an engine from Mastic Beach, a RIT from Center Moriches and an en-

Mastic second engine picked up the hydrant and dropped a five inch to supply line to the engine.

Firefighters went right to work. Firefighters had to cut holes

in the floor to get to fire, which was under the house. After about a thirty minutes, the fire was placed under control.

Brookhaven town fire marshal was requested to the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Car hits pole after three car accident

Coram, NY. On Monday, February 22, 2016, firefighters from Coram responded to a reported three car accident with a car into a pole. Upon arrival, police advised that no subjects were trapped, both two cars were leaking fluid. Firefighters secured all three cars and treated and transported one patient to a local hospital for treatment.

Smoke in duct work

On February 23, 2016, the North Lindenhurst Fire Department received a working general alarm at 1000 Horizon Blvd at the GKN Aerospace Corporation. When they arrived, their was massive smoke in the duct section of the huge complex. Mutual aid was requested from Copiague, East Farmingdale, North Amityville and West Babylon Fire Departments.

Amityville's 1956 Seagrave was a 75 foot aerial ladder. Later, it was sold to Holtville Fire Department in 1981. Today, it is at the Brookhaven Museum.

Mini van versus pole with live wires down Shirley, NY. On March 7, 2016, the Brookhaven Fire Department and Shirley EMS were toned out for an MVA with live wires down. The Brookhaven chief and rescue trucks arrived to find a downed pole with wires and a damaged minivan.

Firefighters had to use caution checking the minivan due to the wires. Firefighters were unable to locate the driver of the minivan. Firefighters checked the neighboring houses to make sure there was no fire. There were unknown injuries and SCPD officers were able to locate the driver.

Must have three years satisfactory experience as a building custodian including responsibility for making repairs to a building and its equipment.

Valid driver license is required.
