Lakeview Signal 10 sends one to hospital Lakeview, Nassau County, NY. On the afternoon of February 12, 2015, the Lakeview Fire Department was dispatched for an alarm of ďŹ re at 419 Coolidge Avenue.

Lakeivew Chief Senti arrived to ďŹ nd smoke showing from the one and a half story residence and a woman self-evacuating. The victim was having trouble breathing due to

smoke inhalation. She was transported to Winthrop University Hospital for treatment.

Multiple lines were stretched and Rockville Centre Ladder 449 arrived as the FAST team. The

blaze was quickly brought under control.

Additional departments assisting included West Hempstead, Malverne and East Rockaway.

According to published reports, the blaze may have started in the bedroom from an electrical source.

SOUTHAMPTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

Extrication needed

by Southampton On February 25th at 1:45 p.m., the Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a motor vehicle accident on cr 39 near Sandy Hollow Road. Southampton vVlunteer Ambulance requested heavy rescue to extricate a subject from a white sedan. Southampton Village Ambulance was dispatched to transport a second subject to Southampton Hospital. It was reported that the driver of a white sedan fell asleep and crossed over and into a oncoming tractor trailer. Crews also had to contain a fuel leak from the tractor trailer. Traffic was diverted in both directions by the Southampton fire police. The road was closed for approximately one hour. 2nd Assistant Chief Anthony Stevens was in charge of the scene.

When we join the fire service, we do not know all the sacrifice that we will be making. We sacrifice our time going to classes, time away from our loved ones, when we are on duty or get called in for extra duty of filling in for someone that banged out sick. We sacrifice money to help those in need, our talents helping rebuild communities that have been affected by fire or disasters that we have responded to.

A brother from Buffalo reminded me of all the sacrifices that a single parent makes. A single mother, who raises her children on her own and also working a full time job. How many of us make the sacrifies for our children? How about our families sacrificing us, so that we can serve others? Or sacrificing what we want for our children? I know that many times in families, some of the parents may go without some meals, so that their children can eat three meals a day. I have seen senior citizens eating cat food, so that they had money to pay for their medication.

We know that also part of the job may be to put in time for the citizens or a brother, but why do we do it? What is the underlying reason that we are ready to sacrifice?

We may not say it or even know consciously, but I believe that it is that we care for our fellow man and that starts with our family and members of our company. When one of our own members needs help, especially for a mayday, we are willing to make

great sacrifices. We carry out what we are taught, "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." or another sign of sacrifice is: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.

And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters."

We make sacrifices by rolling out for calls, when the thermometer does not even come close to 0 degrees, when it is just so hot that we are sweating even before putting on our gear. We make sacrifices by giving up our sleep to respond to calls. We sacrifice our bodies when we refuse to take care of ourselves and still handle calls when sick or injured. We always are willing to go, no matter what.

Let us remember all the sacrifies that were made by our brothers, those who have gone into a burning building, when a brother is trapped or those whose may stay in a building past the time that is safe. We look at the gain versus the risk, but many times we risk our lives, to save another's life.

Those who have served in the military are willing to make sacrifices for freeedom, and for that we should always say “Thank You!” This month is the time that we also remember other sacrifices, especially the sacrifice that was made for us 2015 years ago, when Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again. So many of us forget that sacrifice. His risk.

His sacrificed life so that the gain for all would be great. All we have to do is to be willing to accept the gift that He gave to us through His sacrifice. Would we be willing to be tortured and nailed to a cross, when we know that we are innocent?

Car fire in Shinnecock Hills On March 2, 2015 at 8:59 a.m., the Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a car fire on Longview Road in Shinnecock Hills. Police arrived on scene and reported it to be a working car fire. Units arrived and extinguished it quickly.

Apparatus fire in North Bellmore On Wednesday, March 4th in the late morning hours, the North Bellmore Fire Department was toned out for smoke inside a building. Firefighters were immediately on scene at their Station 2 in North Bellmore. Their 85 foot mid-mount tower ladder (658) caught fire. Crews stretched lines from 656 (two bays over) and quickly extinguished the fire. Truck 8 sustained extensive damage. An investigation into the cause of the fire within the vehicle is ongoing. No injuries were sustained by firefighters on the scene. The building sustained minor smoke damage.

Mastic handles gas leak Shirley, NY. On the morning of February 18, 2015, the Mastic Fire Department was toned out for a gas leak at 351 William Floyd Parkway. Mastic Assistant Chief Jim Mickert arrived on the scene and had a strong odor of gas in the store. First engine was 5-12-5, which firefighters went to the rear of the store and shut off all gas to the building. Second due into the scene was 5-12-2, which firefighters had to force enter into open store to check. Firefighters checked all stores to make sure that the readings went down. The cause of the gas leak was unknown, but under investigation.

Overnight structural fire for Smithtown The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a structural fire at 1:28 a.m. on February 22nd with the location of 91 Stony Hill Path. Upon arriving on the scene, Chief 4-2-31 (Murphy) upgraded the alarm to a working structural fire.

The fire of unknown origin started outside, under the rear deck of the home and began spreading to the exterior wall of the house. Engine 5-2-5 stretched hose line to the rear of the structure and extinguished the fire. Overhaul of the rear of the home in the affected area was performed to make sure there was no spread of fire. All units were released at 2:51 a.m. On scene was Chief Murphy, Engines 4-2-5, 4-2-2, 4-2-15, Rescue 4-2-9, Ladder 4-2-7 and ambulance 4-2-62.

Oceanside mourns member The Oceanside Fire Department was shocked and saddened when Ex-Captain Allen Gershkowitz passed away suddenly while working at Oceanside's headquarters on February 2nd.

Al was a 38 year member of the Oceanside Fire Department, Supervisor for the Oceanside Fire District and had served as Captain of Southside Hose Co 2.

He is best remembered for his dedication and kidness as well as his terrible jokes. Al was a genuine person who did the right

thing because it was the right thing to do.

He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Mary and his two daughters, Erica and Joanna.

Remembering one of our own The family, friends, and firematic family of Commissioner and Ex-Chief George Zaglool lost more then a husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and fellow firefighter. We lost a man with integrity, loyalty, values, and compassion.

We JUMP TO FILE# lost someone who 030215103 knew the meaning of brotherhood and family.

George joined the Mastic Fire Department in 1979 and served the department in many capacities.

He served as a Second Lieutenant in 1982-1983, First Lieutenant in 1984-1985 Captain in 1986, Assistant Chief in 1991-1992 and served as Chief of Department in 1993-1994.

George had 36 years of service in the department and was a current commissioner in the Mastic Fire District for the past 17 years. He was very dedicated to the fire service and was proud to say he was a member of Mastic Fire Department.

Also during his fire career, George received the Suffolk County Medal of Valor in 1992, when he rescued a child from a house fire. The child was home sick from school.

George has touched many lives in his 36 years as a firefighter including those of the firefighters families. He looked out for people. That's just what he did. He had a watchful eye and treated his brother firefighters’ families as if they were his own.

We lost a man who was looked upon by many. Words can

not explain the loss that many of us feel right now.

One thing that needs to be remembered in this horrible time is that George left something with each and every one of us; a memory, story, or something he taught us to be remembered forever.

He has made us stronger and taught us life long lessons and he may not be here in person but will always be with us in spirit.

Mid-day blaze strikes Rockville Centre home On Thursday, February 12, 2015, Rockville Centre firefighters were dispatched for an alarm of fire at 192 South Long Beach Road, between Hawthorne Street and Lincoln Avenue at a little before 10 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to smoke and fire in the residence and immediately stretched hose lines and pulled ground ladders. Oceanside Tower Ladder 244 and Lynbrook Ladder 427 were placed in operation.

Two firefighters were injured at the scene and transported to a local hospital. The injuries appear to be minor burns.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation, but an oil burner in the basement may be the cause.

Mastic Beach battles house fire in cold temperatures Mastic Beach, NY. On the afternoon of February 19 around 2:30 p.m., the Mastic Beach Fire Department was dispatched out for a reported house fire at 75 Montauk Dr. First to arrive on the scene was exchief 5-13-99 and UMP TO FILE# found that they had J022015133 a room well involved and radioed back to county control to retone out his department for a working fire. He requested an engine from Mastic Fire Department and RIT team from Brookhaven Fire Department.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire.

First due engine into the scene was 5-13-2 and firefighters made a fast attack on the fire. The second engine went right to work with the rest of the firefighters. The Mastic Fire Department arrived on the scene to help knock down the rest of the fire. With the wind blowing hard, it did not make it easy for firefighters to battle this fire.

The fire was placed under control about a half hour after the firefighters arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Short on time? Metabolism need a boost? Tired of the same old routine? Ready for something new?

How about a 15 minute workout that will cover all the major muscle groups – get that heart 'pump pump pumping' and give your metabolism a long term boost too?

This routine will not only save time, the “high intensity training” (more commonly referred to as metabolic training these days) can raise your metabolic rate and keep it there for up to 48 hours following the workout.

Although many consider this type of training to be advanced, there are ways to modify it so that it can suit all ages and fitness levels.

Healthy individuals, who have their physician’s approval to exercise without restriction, can reap the benefits of “Metabolic Training”.

The key is working at the highest intensity level each individual finds possible.

Working as hard and as quickly as you can without sacrificing safety and proper form and alignment is essential.

You won’t have to “suck wind,” but working at a level of slightly increased respiration on the verge of moderate breathing as tolerated works.

The biggest mistake I see individuals make with this type of training is not working within their own limitations. This is not only ineffective it can be extremely dangerous.

They either work too fast to perform the exercises correctly, or they work to absolute respiratory exhaustion.

Individuals, who continue to work beyond the point of fatigue, sacrifice proper form and alignment.

This often leads to injury, which defeats the whole purpose of training.

The routine outlined below is based upon 30 second intervals.

The goal is to perform as many repetitions within the 30 seconds with

proper form/alignment and at a tolerable level of respiration.

Again, slightly increased breathing on the verge of moderate is acceptable.

On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being “breathlessness”, individuals can work at a level between 8 and 9 with 10 representing full fatigue.

Remember to have your physician’s approval to exercise without restriction.

Observe the modifications put in place here by avoiding total breathlessness and/or absolute fatigue.

Begin the routine slowly to establish your own limitations and challenge yourself as you become more comfortable with the routine and intensity level.

You can substitute exercises that work the same muscle groups.

If you fatigue before the completion of the 30 second interval, rest until you can properly continue.

Adjust your intensity level, so that you can work as hard as you can safely and properly. Remember to warm-up and cool-down.

To stay hydrated drink 4-8 ounces of water before your workout.

Sip throughout, and drink at least eight ounces of water when you are finished.

New York Wildfire Academy announces brush truck training program for volunteer firefighters The New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy will hold its fourth ever brush truck training course for the volunteer fire service this March.

The brush truck JUMP TO FILE # course, which will 022415101 be taught by a combination of local and national instructors, is based on a national training program, but has been specifically adapted to the unique situations found in Long Island’s fire-prone Pine Barrens region.

“The volunteer fire service on Long Island has for years courageously battled some of New York State’s most historic wildfires,” Central Pine Barrens Commission Executive Director John W. Pavacic said.

“The response of the volunteer fire service to the Sunrise Fire in 1995 and Crescent Bow Fire in April 2012 are just a few examples of their willingness and effectiveness in battling these historic fires.

“By offering this training, the academy hopes to add a few more tools to the arsenal needed to battle these devastating blazes.”

The brush truck training course will consist of two days of classroom training on March 21and 22, 2015.

On the following weekend, volunteer firefighters will spend approximately three hours on either March 28 maneuvering brush trucks through forested and sandy areas.

The academy is holding this course in late March in order to better prepare volunteer firefighters for the wildland firefighting season on Long Island, which reaches its peak in April. In 2013, New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy,debuted this course which attracted volunteer firefighters from the Eastport, Flanders, Lakeland, North Babylon, Orient and Westhampton Beach Volunteer Fire Departments.

Participating fire departments in the Spring 2014 courses included Brentwood, Cutchogue, Eastport, East Quouge, Flanders, Gordon Heights, Hagerman, Kings Park, Lawrence- Cedarhurst, Massapequa, North Babylon, North Sea, Patchogue, Shelter Island, West Babylon and West Sayville.

Participants in the Fall 2014 course included volunteer fire-

fighters from Deer Park, East Hampton, Flanders, Mastic, Nesconset, Patchogue, and West Babylon.

More training will be conducted at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank and on New York State Department of Environmental Conservation property in Ridge.

There will be a $40 training materials fee per firefighter. Brush trucks only need to be driven to this class on the designated driving day.

Serious overnight MVA involving Stony Brook fire chief The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a motor vehicle accident with heavy rescue requested at 12:39 a.m. on February 26th with the location of Routes 111 and 347.

Two vehicles collided with complex extrication required to remove the occupants. One of the vehicles involved was driven by a Stony Brook Fire Department Chief. The other car had two occupants.

Upon arrival, Smithtown Fire Department units began the dual extrications.

The vehicle containing the Stony Brook Chief was overturned

onto its side. Assisting in the extrications were the Hauppauge Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Services.

While the extrications were in progress, a landing zone was established for Suffolk Police Department aviation to land a helicopter at Route 347 and Mt. Pleasant Road to provide potential transport to the hospital.

Upon the completion of the extrications, patients were trans-

ported to the Stony Brook University Medical Center. Two were transported via ambulance while the third was air transported.

Condition of the patients is unknown at this time. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.

On scene were Chiefs 4-2-31 (Murphy) 4-2-32 (Landrigan), Rescue 4-2-9, Engines 4-2-4, 4-25 and Ambulances 4-2-61, 4-2-62, 4-2-64, 4-2-65.

Ex-chief Gilanna mourned by Baldwin

Ex-Chief Christopher Glianna joined the Baldwin Fire Department on April 9th 1968 as a member of Hose Co 1.

On May 4, 1970, he transferred to Hook and Ladder Co 1. He served in the following capacities: 2nd Lieutenant 1972, 1st Lieutenant 1973, Captain 1977, 3rd Deputy Chief 1979, 2nd Deputy Chief 1980, 1st Deputy Chief 1981, and Chief of Department 1982.

He received two Distinguished

Service Awards, the first in 1976 and the second in 1977.

He was also with the FDNY for 18 years. He was a firefighter in Ladder 123, Ladder 56, Rescue 1, and retired as a lieutenant of Ladder 111.

Caller reports swimmer vanishing in the Delaware River North Merrick, Nassau County, NY. In the early evening hours of March 6, 2015, firefighters in North Merrick quickly extinguished a fire on Richard Avenue.

At a little after 7:30 p.m., the North Merrick Fire Department was dispatched for a smoke condition at 55 Richard Avenue with a cross street of Henry Road. 2nd Assistant Robert Chief advised of smoke in the residence.

Engine 671 arrived on the scene and stretched from a nearby hydrant. One hose line was used to

extinguish a small basement fire.

East Meadow was on scene as the FAST team with Ladder 617.

Standing by were Roosevelt, Merrick and North Bellmore Fire Departments.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by local officials.

Autism and first responders: Seeing Beyond the Smoke The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University, in collaboration with Willow Grove Fire Company, Upper Moreland Police Department and Horsham Fire Company, has produced and just released the video, Autism and First Responders: Seeing Beyond the Smoke to help increase awareness of the unique issues presented by people with autism, and to inform fire fighters, police officers and other first responders on how to recognize signs of children and young adults with autism.

Parents, family members, educators and others who support people with autism will also find valuable information in the video.

The 20-minute video features a house fire scenario with suggestions on how to recognize and manage challenges that people with autism may present, along with interviews with Chief Brian Focht, Firefighters Tom Winterberg, Marc Medori, family members and children with autism.

The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University is Pennsylvania’s University Center for Excellence, one of 67 across the country.

Through training, information dissemination and assistance, the Institute strives to achieve a society where all people are valued and respected and where all people have the knowledge, opportunity and power to improve their lives and the lives of others.

The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) hosted its first Technical Rescue Leadership Forum on February 28th in the Capital District. This free program for technical rescue team leaders was coordinated by NYSAFC’s Special Operations Committee. More than 50 students from across New York state participated in the event.
