November breezes mean that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This edition is filled with great opportunities to be thankful for all of the great things around you.

ovember is a month that honors those in the military. We observe Veterans Day on November 11th to celebrate our veterans and thank them for their sacrifices and their service to our country; but who is a veteran? A veteran is someone who served in the military, either in the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or the Navy, during times of war or peace. In 2016, there were 18.8 million veterans in the United States.

Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day and it commemorated the end of World War I. Armistice was signed at 11:00 am on November 11, 1919 and Woodrow Wilson named it Armistice Day. It later became an official federal holiday in 1938, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954. It is also a common practice around the world to observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 am every November 11th. Armistice Day is celebrated to this day in Canada, Great Britain, and France.

One Veterans Day tradition is the Veterans Day National Ceremony, which is held in Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony begins at 11:00 am when the president, or a designated representative, lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while a bugler plays “Taps.” The next portion of the ceremony is a parade of flags performed by a color guard made up of members from each of the Armed Forces.

How do we define the branches of the Armed Forces?

Army: The Army is comprised of a

group of soldiers who are trained and prepared to protect peace and security of the nation on land. It is the largest branch of the military, and it began as the Continental Army in 1775.

Air Force: The Air Force is in

charge of military operations in the air. The Air Force was part of the Army until President Harry S. Truman made it an independent military service in 1947.

Navy: The Navy was established as a branch of the military in 1775 and it is made up of a fleet of waterborne military vessels. The Navy’s mission is to maintain, train, and equip sailors to maintain the freedom of the seas.

Marine Corps: The Marine Corps was also established in

1775. In the military, marines are known as the first landing force and, as such, can be the first soldiers to enter combat. The official Marine Corps birthday is November 10th, known as United States Marine Corp Day.

Coast Guard: The Coast Guard is known best for enforcing

maritime laws, ocean rescues, and protecting life and property at sea. In times of war, the Coast Guard will aid the Navy.

Thanksgiving Traditions As we plan to travel to see relatives, or have family come to visit us for Thanksgiving, did you ever wonder what active military personnel or homeless veterans do when they’re stationed away from home or do not have a home?

If they were in our area, they attended the annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner on the Battleship New Jersey that was held for 12 years. It was a special event that brought, the community together in support of our military and veterans. Many came together to give back to those who sacrifice time with their families in defense of our nation.

Due to overseas combat deployments continuing to decline, less soldiers were moving through the Bases in our area, which meant that there was a lack of active duty military personnel in need of turkey dinners. While 2015 was the last year that the event was held, the annual event over the course of 12 years fed over 2,750 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who were unable to return home to see family on Thanksgiving.

Over the years, residents gathered to welcome and cheer on our military heroes from the pier of the Battleship, as flags waved and cheering and applause was heard in the air. It was a terrific chance for local residents, young

and old, to give back to our military heroes for the tremendous sacrifices they have made for our country.

So as you plan for your Thanksgiving dinner, take a moment to think about those military personnel who are away from home. Consider writing a letter, sending a picture or a small care package. Thinking closer to home, if you have a friend or neighbor who lives far from family and is unable to spend Thanksgiving with them, think about inviting them to spend Thanksgiving with your family.

Thanksgiving is composed of two words: thanks and giving. The holiday reminds us to give thanks and to share and give to those who could use our help. This Thanksgiving Day, take a moment and reflect on what actions you can take in the next year to fully express the meaning of Thanksgiving.

Turkeys

There are six species of turkeys that live around the world, but the species that lives throughout North America and Mexico is Meleagris gallopavo. A wild turkey can grow up to 4 feet in size, their wingspan can reach up to 6 feet, and their weight can vary from 5.5 to 18 pounds. A male turkey is called a gobble or a tom, while female turkeys are called hens. Male turkeys are the only turkeys that produce the sound of a gobble, and it can be heard from a mile away! Female turkeys cluck and chirp. Additionally, turkeys have individual and unique voices which help them recognize one another.

Baby turkeys are called poults and they are unable to fly during the first

two weeks after they are born. Domesticated turkeys cannot fly, even though they are descendants of wild turkeys, because they are much larger than wild turkeys. Wild turkeys are able to fly for short distances up to 55 miles per hour. On land, wild turkeys can run up to 20 miles per hour.

Wild turkeys have dark feathers, which helps them blend into their surroundings. The color of a turkey’s head, however, can change from gray to red, white, or blue when it is distressed or excited!

Turkeys have excellent vision during the day, but limited vision at night.

Since their eyes are on the sides of their head, turkeys have periscopic vision. This type of vision allows

turkeys to see up to 270 degrees, which is a very wide range of vision.

Turkeys can see objects that are not in their direct line of sight due

to their periscopic vision. Instead of external ears, turkeys are able to hear through holes in their head behind their eyes.

What else makes turkeys so interesting?

• Turkeys have approximately 5,500 feathers!

• The first official turkey pardon was given by George H. W. Bush in 1989.

• A turkey’s diet includes seeds, nuts, fruit, insects, and small lizards.

• Turkeys form strong bonds in the wild and frequently travel in groups of 200 turkeys or more.

• Turkeys have good memories which help them to remember locations even after a year of being away from it!

• Turkey eggs take one month to hatch.

• Turkeys have stones in their stomachs which help them digest food.

• Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national bird.

November is a month full of special days. Of course you might be thinking of Thanksgiving, which is on the 23rd! It’s a time with family and friends to celebrate our lives and show gratitude for all of our blessings. We think of turkey dinners, pumpkin pie and family traditions. Why not add some letter writing into the day? What can that have to do with being thankful?

Let me explain.

What you might not know is that in November we also celebrate; Election Day, World Freedom Day, US Marine Corps Day and Veterans Day! All of these days come before Thanksgiving and they surely represent many things to be grateful for this month. We need to take some time out of our busy lives to recognize the real heroes that serve or have served in our US Military.

These brave heroes work to protect us, our rights, and our freedom. We have the right to an election and have freedom, thanks to them. Let’s make this a month of real, “Thanksgiving” by taking a few minutes to write a letter of grati-

tude for all that they have done. This will bring so much joy into their lives and make it a true time of thanks.

You can interview a friend or family member that is in the Military or is a Veteran. Ask them about their job and what they do or did.

Let them tell you about their experiences, and where and when they have been deployed. Listen carefully and take good notes. Be sure to get their mailing address, and first and last name. Thank them for their time. Choose some brightly colored paper if you can, to write your letter. Address the letter and envelope to them. You can share a few things about yourself like your hobbies, friends, family, work, pets and travel. Then, use your notes to dedicate the rest of the letter to thanking them for all that they have done. Remind them that they are true heroes and that, without them, you wouldn’t have all of these wonderful things in your life to tell them. Draw a picture if you want to add a special touch!

What if you don’t know someone in the US Military? Then, you can go to www.OperationGratitude.com, and just follow the directions. They send 200,000+ Care Packages to deployed troops and Veterans every year. Their goal is to include a letter in every one. Please share this with your friends, family, classmates and teachers. If we all help, then I’m sure that many heroes will be blessed this year and so “Thankful” for your letter. Make it a new part of your Thanksgiving tradition every year!

id you know that the names of many places and people have meaning? Your school may be named after a famous person or someone that helped your community. Your street may be named after a famous person, like Washington or a tree like Maple. Just like these places were named with a purpose, so were you.

You may have been named after a family member, like your dad or a great grandfather. Your name may represent the time you were born like Autumn or July. Your name may be an object, like Heather, which is a small plant with white or pink flowers.

Your name could even have a meaning in a specific culture, like Dimitri, which is a Greek name meaning

“earth-lover” from the mythological Greek goddess Demeter (goddess of corn and harvest).

It's fun to look for the meaning of names.

Your name is a very important part of who you are. You may have been randomly named or named with a purpose, but everyone has an opportunity to GIVE purpose to their name!

As you go through life, your name will forever be a part of who you are. Others may not know how you got your name or what your name means. But when people think of you and say your name it will mean something to them. What will they think of when they say your name?

The name Mahatma is an Indian name that was derived from Sanskrit meaning “great soul”. But when people say Mahatma Gandhi, to them, his name means even more like wise, humble, courageous, brave, hero, bold, kind, clever or born leader.

Take the time to ind out why you have your name. Then embrace your name and love it because it is a part of who you are.

And as you live life, give your name purpose so that when people say your name, they smile!

Why do Leaves Change Color?

“Fall” into this fun science experiment and find out the answer below!

As the season transitions from summer to autumn, we start to see the leaves on the trees change from green to beautiful shades of red, yellow and orange. Did you ever wonder why this happens?

Explore the concept with this simple experiment!

Background Information: Trees and plants can’t go to the grocery store to buy food to eat when they are hungry. So instead, they must make their own food by a process called photosynthesis. Here is a simple version about how that happens: Leaves contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in almost all types of plants. Chlorophyll is located within the leaf’s chloroplasts; this is the part of the plant in which photosynthesis occurs. Photosynthesis is the process plants use to turn energy into food. During photosynthesis, chlorophyll is used to capture and convert energy for the plant to use.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, it is a good time to help children learn the meaning of gratitude. Here are some ways parents can help:

MATERIALS:

1. 3 leaves from the same tree 2. Rubbing Alcohol 3. 1 glass jar 4. Wooden spoon or popsicle stick 5. 1 plastic baggie or plastic wrap 6. 1 paper coffee filter 7. 1 Small bowl 8. Hot water (make sure to have an adult help with this)

PROCEDURE:

1. Break the leaves into tiny pieces.

2. Place the pieces of the leaves in the glass jar.

3. Pour rubbing alcohol over the leaves until they are just about covered.

4. Grind up the leaves and stir them into the rubbing alcohol until the liquid turns slightly green.

Make sure the leaves are mashed well!

5. Cover the jar with plastic wrap.

6. Place the jar in a bowl.

7. Pour hot water into the bowl.

Make sure to have an adult help with this step.

8. Leave the jar in the water for 30 minutes. Hold the jar from the top and swish it occasionally to stir the leaves a bit.

9. In the meantime, cut a strip from the coffee filter.

10. Remove the jar from the water.

11. Remove the plastic wrap and place a coffee filter strip into the jar (you can tape the end of the coffee filter to the outside of the jar so the entire piece does not fall into the jar).

12. Wait another 30 -60 minutes.

13. The liquid will travel up the coffee filter and the colors will begin to separate as the liquid evaporates. This should leave behind a color residue on the filter and your leaf should change color, too.

RESULTS:

This experiment helps to show you how the chlorophyll from leaves begins to break down during the fall, allowing other colors in the leaves to be revealed. The chlorophyll gives the leaves their green tint and as it breaks down, other colors will appear on the leaf. The rubbing alcohol and hot water (acting as energy) helped to break down the chlorophyll so you can see the process first-hand.

Find a project: Encourage children to select some toys to donate or find a goodwill project you can do as a family, like helping an elderly neighbor with leaves.

Have kids help at home: Give your child a chore and let him or her complete it without help. By helping out, children will realize the effort it takes to keep the household running.

Talk about gratitude: Share things you are thankful for and encourage your children to do the same.

Write thank-you notes: Make it a habit of having your children write a thank-you note for gifts and special activities. It helps remind them of how fortunate they are!

Cream butter and sugar together in a bowl. Add vanilla. In separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and baking powder and stir into creamed mixture. Add cereal...do not over mix. Make tablespoon-sized balls and place on cookie sheet to bake at 350° for 10 minutes.

These are all things for which I am grateful. Everything from A to Z. November is a month for giving thanks. The happiest people in the world are those who have an attitude of gratitude. Those who are grateful for what they do have, rather than focusing on what they want or don’t have. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to spend with family and loved ones and think about all the things you are thankful for. At our house, that is actually a family tradition on Thanksgiving Day; we go around the table naming the things we are most grateful for. Just for fun, make your own A to Z list of things you are thankful for.

Veterans Day is also in November. Some people confuse all of the different patriotic holidays, but this is one of my favorites. Veterans Day is when we honor and thank all of those people who have served, and are serving in our military.

On Memorial Day in May, we honor those who have died in service to our country.

But on Veterans Day, you have the opportunity to honor those who are still here.

Every time I see a little old man walking slowly into Wawa wearing a hat that says “Viet Nam – 1968” or “Korea – 1953” or “U.S.S. Arizona”, I don’t get annoyed

that they are moving slowly. I feel honored to be near them. I greet them and chat with them. I think about how they were once one of the baddest dudes on the planet. Veterans of wars that happened years ago saw many terrible things that we can’t even imagine. And they did it all to protect our country and our freedom. For that, I am extremely grateful.

What are you grateful for? Maybe at first you can’t think of much to be grateful for because we live in such a fast paced world of immediate satisfaction – I want it now – I want it now – I want it now. But take a deep breath and close your eyes for a moment. Now think. Do you have a nice house? Nice warm clothes? A nice family? Did you have a nice dinner last night? And breakfast this morning? Do you get to go to school and learn new and exciting things? Does Mom or Dad take you to soccer, baseball, karate, dance, gymnastics, wrestling, football, guitar lessons, etc? Do you have a tablet or some other cool electronic device to play games on? Well then, it sounds like you have a lot to be thankful for.

What would a selfish, inconsiderate person do? Probably wish they had more stuff. What would a Black Belt do? Probably be thankful for what they do have, and maybe even share what they have with others who don’t have as much.
