I hope you enjoyed the break from school and you were able to make some great resolutions for 2019. If you haven’t made your list yet – it’s not too late. Think of things that can help you in school like doing your homework before dinner or packing your backpack. Some resolutions that can help at home could be setting the table for dinner and going to bed earlier. Whatever your resolutions are, think of some that are realistic and helpful to you so that you can have a great year.

This edition has lots of information to teach you about the discipline needed to be an athlete (and the qualities can help you in any situation from family to the classroom to friends, and more). You can also learn about Mind Matters in Character Counts...a fun and easy definition for being H.A.P.P.Y. and healthy. Do you want to get more exercise and eat healthier this year? Then check out how to start a Food & Fitness Diary in Write to the Point. Talking about food, make sure to read The Wonders of Science for a great experiment that happens right before your eyes. A message from the Regional Superintendent

Dear Staten Island Catholic School families,

Happy New Year and Welcome to 2019! Every New Year I reflect on the wonderful gift that God has given the leaders of our schools. Each new year brings a chance to make a difference in the lives of children!

January will be a very busy month for our school communities. On January 6th we acknowledge the Feast of the Epiphany. The Three Kings (also known as Wise Men) saw the star over Bethlehem when Christ was born and followed it to find the Christ child on January 6th, bringing gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh.

On January 8th and 29th we will be hosting Touring Tuesday open houses from 9 to 11 a.m. Be sure to spread the word and invite a friend to tour your school.

Schools will be closed on Monday, January 21st in honor of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. The day is a celebration of his life and achievements as an influential American civil rights leader.

A Staten Island tradition is our annual Catholic Schools Week Mass where each of our 21 elementary schools and 6 high schools send student represen-

tatives to the Mass to celebrate as one Catholic community. It’s a great kick off to CSW! This year, the Mass will be held on Sunday, January 27th, 2018 at Holy Rosary Church at 2 pm. Please consider joining us for this wonderful celebration of our schools and our students.

We will finish the month by celebrating Catholic Schools Week from January 27th through February 2nd, 2019. This is an annual event sponsored by National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) which highlights

Catholic schools across the nation, and this year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” During Catholic Schools Week, schools typically observe the week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contribution to Church, local communities and the nation. Be sure to check out your school’s website for updates as the week draws near.

Academy of St. Dorothy:

Academy of St. Dorothy will host a Young Alumni Panel who will speak about their current careers and the role of ASD played in their lives.

“Soup or Bowl” – a food drive consisting of donations of cans of soup or boxes of cereal with an opportunity to wear their favorite team shirt.

An Open House for our parents will be held “Day in the life of an ASD Student.” Acknowledgement of the Sisters of St. Dorothy who have given us a faith foundation throughout the years. The week will close with an afternoon of Bowling and pizza wearing our student-designed Catholic School Week T-shirts.

St. Patrick:

St. Patrick will be making sandwiches for the poor; “One Sandwich at a Time”. Our students, in grades 5 thru 8 will be making sun butter and jelly sandwiches. Grades 1 to 4 will be having a book swap. Saint Patrick’s will be having a school Mass.

St. Joseph-St. Thomas Focus will be on spiritual, STEM and team building activities. The students will plan and participate in prayer services and Mass and bring in donations of canned goods which they will build into structures during our annual “Canstruction”. The seventh grade will plan a Robotics competition for teams of eighth grade students to complete. Grades 5 and 6 will demonstrate their cup stacking skills during an assembly.

Our Lady Queen of Peace:

Our Lady Queen of Peace Students will participate in the “Feel Good Random Acts of Kindness Campaign.” Each grade will collect items for community organizations-SI Hospital Pediatrics, RUMC, NYPD, FDNY, DSNY, USPS, Crossing Guards and especially for Fr. Dominic and Fr. Steven.

St. Christopher:

St. Christopher will celebrate Catholic Schools week with a Teacher appreciation day and school wide mass, a Career Day, Community Volleyball Game, our annual Book Fair and Café and Principal for the Day.

St. Rita:

St. Rita will have their annual “Souper Bowl” service activity, faculty/staff, parent, and student appreciation days, annual book fair, school spirit days including making your own ice-cream sundae, and a homeroom door decorating contest.

Most importantly, we meet as a school community and conclude the week with a school mass.

THE DISCIPLINE

of being an athlete

H

ave you ever watched a sporting event, like the Olympics, and wondered how the athletes were able to become the best athletes in their sport? Talent and passion are two important parts of being a great athlete, however there are three additional, and equally significant qualities.

First, every athlete needs to have self-discipline. Self-discipline is our ability to motivate ourselves to achieve the goals that we set. Whether the goal is to run faster or pitch better than the day before, having self-discipline means that we will do what it takes to make our goals a reality.

Athletes demonstrate their self-discipline by practicing and maintaining routines and schedules. If athletes did not dedicate their time and energy to practicing, then they would not be prepared for each game or event. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

Practicing every day helps athletes determine their strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, athletes learn what areas

they need to improve through practice.

Keeping a schedule and routine are also forms of self-discipline because we are held accountable. For example, imagine an athlete who is supposed to practice pitching three times a week skipping those practices to use the time for other activities. When it is time to play in the game, the athlete cannot play the way that their team needs them to. Thus, without maintaining a specific schedule, it is easy for athletes to get off track.

An additional important quality for athletes to have is dedication to their sport. Dedication is the commitment that we make to a specific purpose or task. The dedication that athletes have for their sport helps to maintain their focus and achieve their goals. Although dedication is similar to self-discipline, dedication is the drive in each athlete that helps them to stay focused despite any outside factor. Rain or shine, tired muscles, or sore feet - dedicated athletes remain focused. Their dedication, their individual desire to be the best athlete

that they can be, is what keeps them on track.

The final important quality that athletes need to have is commitment. A commitment is a promise or a pledge that we make. Athletes commit to their team, their sport, and to themselves.

Commitment is important in sports because it means that athletes will not give up, no matter how tough it gets.

Whether their commitment carries the athlete through a game, a season, or life, it is a crucial quality for athletes to have.

While talent, passion, self-discipline, dedication and commitment are critical to successful athletes, never forget the importance of:

Our Lady Queen of Peace School held their sixth annual “Shoeboxes of Joy.” The children collected and delivered items for the residents of Carmel Richmond Nursing Home. Faith in action indeed!

Saint Charles in Staten Island is conducting a coat drive and toy drive. The coat drive began from a student’s wish to “do good” during the Christmas season and the toy drive is a result of a teacher’s involvement with local charities.

The Coat Drive is run through New York Cares Coat Drive. Deanna and her father fill their car each day with the coats left in the drop off box in the school lobby to deliver to the NY Cares drop off site.

Toy donations will help benefit South Beach Houses and Staten Island Supports our Soldiers INC for Military Houses. Fran LaGrega and her husband, William, take the toys to the charities.

Academy of St. Dorothy and their partnership with “Buddy Bench” and UPS. Sammie, a 9-year old from Indiana had one wish - for every child to have a friend so that no one feels excluded. Her wish has been the driving force behind a very special movement in schools across the country.

When Sandra, a teacher at The Academy of St. Dorothy, heard about Sammie and the Buddy Benches she knew she had to get one for her school.

UPS delivered by flying Sammie from Indiana to Staten Island, where she helped deliver a Buddy Bench to the excited and enthusiastic students at The Academy of St. Dorothy.

Now that winter is here,

enjoy these snacks… perfect for a cold weekend or a lunchbox treat.

Mix-and-Match Cr umbly Cookies

Ingredients

1 1/2 stick unsalted butter 3/4 c. granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 egg 1 c. all-purpose flour

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. 2. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Beat in the egg.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder, then stir the dry ingredients into the butter and sugar mixture. Combine until you have a soft dough.

4. Divide the dough in half. Add the cocoa powder to one half, kneading the dough until it is completely chocolatey. Add the orange rind to the remaining dough, kneading it through as well.

5. Place each piece of dough onto a well-floured surface and, using your hands, create snake or sau-

6. Place your combined dough pieces onto a baking sheet and freeze for about 10 minutes. When chilled, flatten each twist with a rolling pin, then, use cookie cutters to cut various 2-tone shapes from the dough.

7. Place the cookies, spaced well apart, onto a large greased baking sheet (could also line sheets with parchment paper instead) and bake for 8–10 minutes until cooked through. Cool on a wire rack.

Sandwich small slices of cheddar between mini pretzels. Put on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake about 10 minutes at 425° F. Serve with mustard.

Mix 1/3 cup no-sugar-added fruit preserves with 1 teaspoon cornstarch. Spread into a baking tray lined with lightly greased parchment paper. Bake 45 minutes at 225° F. Cool, then trim the parchment, separate from fruit leather and roll up.

2019 Food & Fitness Diary!

t’s a new year and it’s time for a new you! Do you want to start 2019 off right? If you want to be happy and healthy, then you should start a Food & Fitness Diary. This is easy and you will be amazed at the results. You should write down what you eat for breakfast, lunch & dinner every day. You should also write down the kind of exercise you do and how long you do it. There are food & fitness goals you can set every day for yourself.

Let’s talk about how tracking will help you reach these goals.

You need at least 60 minutes of exercise a day, which should be

actively running, walking or aerobics. You need to join a sports team, take a walk or a run outside or indoors, or play an active game with some friends. This is so easy to fit into your daily routine. Once you complete your physical activity, then write it down in your Diary.

Write down how many minutes and what kind of activity you did. Try to increase your total minutes spent and days doing physical activities every week. Try new sports or other activities you haven’t done before.

You will feel stronger and become more fit the longer you stick with it!

Bread Bacteria: Keeping your Hands Clean with Sanitary Science

New Year’s resolutioN –

t is the season of New Year’s Resolutions so, as we’re setting some goals for ourselves, let’s consider how we can help our beloved pooches get in better, healthier shape in the New Year, too! Fortunately, some of our everyday tricks are not only fun to train but also make for a great workout. And you’ll be happy to hear that there’s plenty you can do inside!

Sit Pretty:

Sitting pretty is a great workout for the core muscles and it aids balance. Starting with your dog in a sit, lure her into a beg position by slowly moving a treat from above her nose back towards her tail. This should result in her balancing on her butt with her front paws off the ground. As she does this more easily, increase the length of time she remains in position.

Back Up:

Backing up is a great workout for the core and hind leg muscles. The easiest way to shape the back-up behavior is to hold a treat at the level of your dog’s chest with you facing her and then walk towards her. Allow her to nibble the treat along the way to keep her interested. Say “yes!” when she takes a step back, giving her a treat, then repeat. As she does this more easily, increase the number of steps she’s taking backwards.

Rollover:

For the benefit of working your dog’s core muscles, do this exercise in both directions. From a “down” position, notice which hip your dog is settled on, and use a treat to lure her nose around her opposite shoulder. So, if she’s lying on her right hip, lead her nose around and over her left shoulder. As she twists her neck to follow the treat, she will roll first flat, then on her back, and then over

A Healthier Dog onto her other side. If she has trouble doing the whole movement right away, reward her in stages – first for just going over onto her side, then for going from her side to her back, and finally for rolling from her side to her back to her other side.

A Word to the Wise

Include your parents when first training these behaviors, and ask your parents to consult with your dog’s vet about what exercises should be avoided due to any physical limitations she might have.

And remember that outdoor activity is still an essential component of any exercise regimen.

TWIG CATFISH One of the many algae-eating species is the Twig catfish. The name is appropriate for this fish because it looks like a stick Farlowella acus or a twig. It is brown in color, slender in shape, and typically between four to eight inches in length. It can be found in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Panama rivers. The fish are known for using leaves and rocks as camouflage.

Cherry Shrimp are also known algae eaters and they Neocaridina davidi originated in Taiwan. The Cherry species

is the most common, but the shrimp can also be yellow, blue, green, violet, chocolate, black, white, or transparent (clear).

Cherry shrimp are four centimeters in length and the female shrimp are larger than the male shrimp. Cherry shrimp can adapt to living in different water conditions. They are also known for shedding their exoskeleton (skin) by making a “U� shape with their bodies to touch their tails.

Ramshorn snails prefer algae, specifically soft green algae, to other sources of food. The snails are approximately 2.5 centimeters in size. Their skin is either black or red and the color of their shell ranges from translucent to brown to black.

Ramshorn snails live in freshwater and saltwater ponds, rivers, streams, and lakes around the world.

AMANO Shrimp Caridina multidentate Caridina multidentate are an algae-eating species of shrimp that originated in Japan and Taiwan and are also called Amano shrimp. The color of their body is translucent and there are red-brown spots in a line on its sides. They have black eyes and a white stripe from their head to their tail. Amano shrimp generally measure between 3.5 to 5 centimeters in length and live for 2 or 3 years. Like the

have green-brown spots, but some species have grey or black spots. The color of the Otocinclus flexilis can also change with its environment! This species usually eats soft green algae or brown diatom algae.
