You should mark May 12-18 on your calendars: It’s a big week. Do you need a hint as to why?

OK, here goes: She is, among other things, wonderful, caring and supportive.

She is the caregiver for the family, puts the needs of her spouse or partner, children, and parents before their own.

Don’t we all have that type of special woman in our lives. May 12-18 is National Women's Health Week – a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health. It brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups in an effort to promote women's health and its importance.

It also empowers women to make their health a priority and encourages them to take the following steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases.

We have a responsibility to support the important women we know and do everything we can to help them take steps for longer, healthier, happier lives.

But even if you lead a completely healthy lifestyle, being born with an underlying heart condition can be a risk factor.

Many things can put you at risk for these problems – one’s you can control, and others that you can’t. But the key takeaway is that with the right information, education and care, heart disease in women can be treated, prevented and even ended.

Studies show that healthy choices have resulted in 330 fewer women dying from heart disease per day.

Heart Health According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer.

The fact is: Heart disease causes 1 in 3 deaths each year in women.

That’s approximately one woman every minute. But it doesn’t affect all women alike, and the warning signs for women aren’t the same in men. What’s more: These facts only begin to scratch the surface.

There are several misconceptions about heart disease in women, and they could be putting you at risk. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health for this very reason.

Heart disease affects women of all ages. For younger women, the combination of birth control pills and smoking boosts heart disease risks by 20 percent.

And while the risks do increase with age, things like overeating and a sedentary lifestyle can cause plaque to accumulate and lead to clogged arteries later in life.

Stress Stress is a feeling you get when faced with a challenge. In small doses, stress can be good for you because it makes you more alert and gives you a burst of energy. For instance, if you start to cross the street and see a car about to run you over, that jolt you feel helps you to jump out of the way before you get hit. But feeling stressed for a long time can take a toll on your mental and physical health.

Long-term stress can help cause a variety of health conditions for every women, from the doting stay-at-home mom, to the working woman. Think three sick kids, not getting that job promotion and trying to manage the bills.

High blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke may be stress related cardiovascular conditions. Some women experience changes in their sexuality and encounter various sexual dysfunctions such as loss of desire as a result of stress. Other side effects include fatigue, various aches and pains, headaches, or as emotional disorders such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances.

There are steps you can take to help you handle stress in a positive way and keep it from making you sick. Try these tips to keep stress in check: Become a problem solver.

Make a list of the things that cause you stress. From your list, figure out which problems you can solve now and which are beyond your control for the moment.

From your list of problems that you can solve now, start with the little ones. Learn how to calmly look at a problem, think of possible solutions, and take action to solve the problem. Being able to solve small problems will give you confidence to tackle the big ones. And feeling confident that you can solve problems will go a long way to helping you feel less stressed.

Be flexible. Sometimes, it’s not worth the stress to argue. Give in once in awhile or meet people halfway.

Get organized. Think ahead about how you’re going to spend your time. Write a to-do list. Figure out what’s most important to do and do those things first.

Set limits. When it comes to things like work and family, figure out what you can really do. There are only so many hours in the day. Set limits for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to say NO to requests for your time and energy.

Relax Take deep breaths. If you're feeling stressed, taking a few deep breaths makes you breathe slower and helps your muscles relax.

Stretch. Stretching can also help relax your muscles and make you feel less tense.

Massage tense muscles. Having someone massage the muscles in the back of your neck and upper back can help you feel less tense.

Take time to do something you want to do. We all have lots of things that we have to do. But often we don't take the time to do the things that we really want to do. It could be listening to music, reading a good book, or going to a movie. Think of this as an order from your doctor, so you won’t feel guilty!

Take care of your body Get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep helps you recover from the stresses of the day. Also, being well-rested helps you think better so that you are prepared to handle problems as they come up. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night to feel rested.

Eat right. Try to fuel up with fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.

Don’t be fooled by the jolt you get from caffeine or high-sugar snack foods. Your energy will wear off, and you could wind up feeling more tired than you did before.

Get moving. Getting physical activity can not only help relax your tense muscles but improve your mood. Research shows that physical activity can help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Don’t deal with stress in unhealthy ways.

This includes drinking too much alcohol, using drugs, smoking, or overeating.

Connect with others Share your stress. Talking about your problems with friends or family members can sometimes help you feel better. They might also help you see your problems in a new way and suggest solutions that you hadn't thought of.

Get help from a professional if you need it.

If you feel that you can no longer cope, talk to your doctor. She or he may suggest counseling to help you learn better ways to deal with stress. Your doctor may also prescribe medicines, such as antidepressants or sleep aids.

Help others. Volunteering in your community can help you make new friends and feel better about yourself.

Breast health Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today.

Still, the chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8.

To reduce your breast cancer risk in particular, be sure to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

Balanced nutrition Poor dieting can deplete women’s bodies of key nutrients. Eat a balanced diet with low-fat protein sources, complex carbohydrates, plenty of fruits and green and yellow vegetables - and go light on the salt, sugar and alcohol.

Osteoporosis & Arthritis As women age, the health of their bones and joints become an increasing issue. Osteoporosis is a bone disease in which the bones become extremely porous, are subject to fracture, and heal slowly, occurring especially in women following menopause and often leading to curvature of the spine from vertebral collapse.

Arthritis is a joint disorder that is characterized by inflammation in the joints. Risk factors for osteoporosis include being 65 years of age or older, having a family history of osteoporotic fracture having a tendency to fall, or early menopause. Some minor risk factors include low calcium intake, low body weight, excess caffeine and alcohol, and smoking. To reduce the risk of osteoporosis, do weightbearing and strength-training exercises at least three times per week to strengthen your bones, eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and take a calcium supplement daily.

PMS and Menopause As most women know, PMS is a very common syndrome. It is believed that changing hormone levels and brain chemistry play a role in PMS. Many symptoms have been linked to PMS, including irritability, bloating, weight gain, fatigue, abdominal pain, food cravings and forgetfulness. Mild or moderate PMS symptoms can be managed by exercise and a balanced diet.

Many women choose hormone replacement therapy to help them through menopause. Natural ingredients are another option. In some studies, Black Cohosh, Soy, Dong Quai and other natural ingredients have been shown to help alleviate discomforts.

A random drive past Will2Lose in Scarsdale last summer turned out to be a life-changing experience for Linda Forde.

Forde, who has struggled with her weight for years, took the initiative to sign up for one of Will2Lose’s programs. An injury delayed her debut at the gym until January of this year. However, in a short time, She has seen results. Linda Forde has changed her life.

“There was something different about the place,” Forde said. “I was never satisfied with the results from other fitness clubs. AtWill2Lose, she there was a positive energy about the facility and the staff also inspired me.”

Forde, 49, of Eastchester is the kind of well-intentioned person that Will2Lose owner Vito DiMatteo knows he can help. The former chiropractor opened Will2Lose two years ago with the idea of creating a program that wouldn’t focus on diet, but create healthier lifestyles and encouraging members to make positive changes in their eating habits: Changes that would hopefully last a lifetime and bring about real results.

Losing between 40 and 50 pounds was Forde’s primary goal. However, before she could lose the weight, she knew she needed to alter her diet. Forde admits to having “horrible eating habits” before she embarked on theWill2Lose program.

“Unknowingly, I thought I was dieting, but I really wasn’t eating the right stuff at all,” Forde said.

Forde blames it on her own lifestyle, but also on a “chaotic” culture that lends to Americans’ poor eating habits.

“We want super-sized, the biggest, the fastest and the quickest, but honestly, that’s the worst thing for us,” she added.

With DiMatteo’s guidance, Forde began to see food in a completely different light.

DiMatteo provided Forde with a sample menu, including foods that would fill her up instead of the useless calories she was consuming. Part of DiMatteo’s unique approach means that participants must ditch the idea of dieting completely.

“We don’t believe in them and they only provide a temporary solution anyway,” he said.

Instead, DiMatteo and his staff of 15 trainers and three nutritionists preach a much healthier lifestyle, one that includes whole foods and a low glycemic food plan, a strategy that helps increase the feeling of fullness for longer periods and includes lots of fruits and vegetables, and no mass-produced food. It was, however, the club’s signature “Biggest Loser” team challenge that got Forde motivated.

“That was really the difference for her,” said DiMatteo, who models the challenge after the NBC reality show that features obese people competing to win a cash prize by losing the most amount of weight possible. “It’s usually the catalyst that gets all of my clients going.”

To become a successful challenge participant, DiMatteo said one has to be truly invested in the program and willing to make what he describes as “some real changes.” Clients of theWill2Lose program are often at the gym several times a week, participating in a number of activities, including kickboxing, cardio sculpt, Pilates mat exercises, studio cycling, step and strength, TRX training and more.

The team challenge is an activity that many get involved in and is the catalyst that keeps them motivated.

For Forde this was a critical element of her success in the program.

“The team creates such a sense of camaraderie that doesn’t exist in other gyms,” she said. “The trainers are encouraging and witty. They focus on you and make you believe when you doubt yourself.”

Forde, who was never athletic as a youngster, says she was amazed by her ability to take on new challenges and perform exercises she never would have done before.

Being surrounded by other competitors who share the same interests and purpose was also helpful, she adds.

DiMatteo said Forde’s success is due to her dedication to the program and a schedule that allows her to attend the Will2Lose gym three to four times.

“She looks fantastic,” DiMatteo said, referring to Forde’s 60-pound weight loss.

Forde said DiMatteo is always working behind the scenes to provide the best results for his clients. It’s that kind of dedication that she is particularly grateful for.

“I have a conscious awareness about food and diet that I didn’t have before,” she said. Forde said her goal these days is to remain healthy, sustain her current weight and become stronger by toning her body.

Getting to that point takes a willingness to rearrange one’s life and to make weight loss and fitness a top priority.

“I always tell my clients that they’ll know themselves when they’re there,” DiMatteo said. “They will eventually get to the point where they will feel happy about their bodies.”

We meet with our affiliate hospitals on a quarterly basis to review maternal/newborn transports, present individual case reviews, discuss quality improvement strategies, and provide educational presentations on related topics of interest and/or best practices or a chosen regional theme.

Collection and assessment of RPC data and affiliate hospital statistical and regional data, and collaboration with public health agencies and community stakeholders relating to maternal/ infant public health issues in our region is another vital role the RPC plays in improving quality outcomes of mothers and newborns in our region.

The WMC RPC team consists of an RPC coordinator, neonatologists, obstetricians, an outreach coordinator/educator and registered nurses.

Option A: The Advanced Certificate in Healthcare Sector Management Enhance your credentials by enrolling in the advanced certificate program. Certificate candidates will complete four healthcare sector management courses for a total of 12 graduate credits on a part-time basis in just two semesters.

Option B:The M.B.A. Degree with a Healthcare Sector Management Concentration Students in the M.B.A. program follow the standard 48credit curriculum, normally completed by part-time students over a 24-month period, with a focus on leadership in healthcare organizations.

“People spend months and years planning for their wedding,’’ said Sabrina Nitkowski-Keever, Director of Maternal/Child Health at Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

“It’s important that couples understand that the decisions they make leading up to the birth of their child can make all the difference, not only for the health of their baby, but for the quality of their birth experience.’’

To help educate aspiring parents, Hudson Valley Hospital Center holds its annual “Art of Having a Baby” Maternity Fair, which will be held this year on Sunday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hospital lobby. This year’s theme: “Planning, Pregnancy and Parenting” will give couples practical advice on the road to parenthood even if they are not yet expecting, but just considering having a baby.

Nitkowski-Keever said that couples should do research on the type of birth they want and develop a birthing plan beforehand. When developing a plan they should consider birthing methods, midwives vs. obstetricians, pain management and the benefits of breastfeeding among other questions. Because birthing philosophies vary among hospitals and providers, it is wise to decide which philosophy best suits you before choosing a provider or a hospital.

The “Art of Having a Baby” Maternity Fair can help prospective parents with all of these questions.

The day will feature, financial planning advisers, workshops on pregnancy and parenting and tours of our Maternity Department, as well as a “Speed Dating” session with obstetricians and pediatricians.

Financial Check Up – When was your last policy review?

By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC Just like visiting your doctor for your annual physical, it is crucial that people systematically review all of their financial plans as well. This includes, but is not limited to, their health coverage, life insurance coverage, disability income protection and retirement plans.

For the purposes of this month’s article, we will only be focusing on life insurance protection and the circumstances surrounding why you should be seriously considering reviewing your coverage regularly. Here are a few potential life changing events:

1- Marriage and children - Can your spouse run the household without your income? Can your spouse raise your children the way you want them raised without your income? Can your spouse send your children to their college of choice without your income?

2- Purchase of a home and/or property – Will your spouse be able to remain in the home without your income? Will the family have to liquidate other properties at a fire sale without your income? Where will your family be forced to live without your income?

3- Start a new business/take on new partners/raise capital – Will your family be able to sell your business without you

operating it? Is your business worth anything without you operating it? Are you contractually obligated to buy out all of your partner’s family interests and vice versa in case of death or disability? Are you obligated to repay loans and how can your family repay these loans if you are no longer operating the business?

4- Estate Taxes – Is your net worth significant today and if you live to retirement, will your interests continue to grow?

Have you analyzed what your children’s potential tax liability will be in 20 or 30 years if you do nothing even at a simple rate of return of say 3-5%? Even more importantly, do you want your children to have to pay dollar for dollar on these tax obligations? Or is it smarter to plan now and have them only pay pennies on that same dollar using life insurance? Do you want to give a major portion of your financial legacy to your family or to the IRS? Albeit, these are very simple questions, but the answers have very serious consequences on the people you care about the most.

There is an old saying, “people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”… and unfortunately, we see this all the time. If you do not give these matters your attention while you are alive, it will be too late to address them when you are gone. Life insurance not only gives your beneficiaries the immediate cash they need, it also gives them the time and the opportunity to make the best choice(s) possible in the midst of a usually very emotional family upheaval.

All of these events require a fresh new review of your current coverage to determine if all your bases are covered in case of an untimely, premature death. Once you have determined the proper amounts of coverage for the family and the business, then you must decide on what are the best products or combination of products to fund the insurance. For example, is a guaranteed 30 year level term product adequate or do we need to purchase a permanent policy like whole or universal life.

Upon review, my office often examines older universal life policies which have not been funded properly from inception. These policies, if not periodically evaluated, can lapse just when you need the coverage the most. In other words, problems can arise because: 1) individuals do not make all of their scheduled payments, 2) individuals borrow large sums against the policy and never pay them back, 3) the original policy design assumes an unrealistically high interest rate over the entire life of the insured, or 4) poor investment returns over an extended period of time in equity sub accounts in a variable life contract.

This is why it is crucial that you review your policy values every couple of years with a trusted advisor to ensure the policy is performing as originally designed. Specifically, that scheduled premiums remain unchanged, that contract cash values are in line with the original policy illustrations and that the life insurance death benefit remains in force for as long as desired. It also gives you a chance to change your plans and strategies before the eleventh hour when astronomical premiums or potential health issues makes all potential choices cost prohibitive.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked.

Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other Chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.
