SPRING HILL, FL - On February 11th, Hernando Fire and Rescue were receiving calls for a fire at the Holiday Springs RV Park. On the dispatch, BC1 and BC 3, Engines 2 and 6, Quint 1, R1 and R12 were assigned. On arrival of Quint 1, heavy fire and smoke was coming from multiple mobile homes and RV's.

Pickup Truck Catches Fire in Spring Hill SPRING HILL, FL - On February 10th, a pickup truck caught fire on the busy route of US 19 in Spring Hill. The driver was able to get out safely. Hernando County Fire dispatched En­ gine 6 to the fire, which was knocked down within 15 minutes.

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (November 5, 2025) - Every Wednesday night, 32-year-old HCA nurse Randy Rahming joins friends for a basketball game at Forest Lake Academy. On June 4, 2025, the game began like any other—until Rahming suddenly collapsed on the court after mak­ ing a basket and going into cardiac arrest.

Fellow players, two who were both medical professionals, imme­ diately sprang into action. Dr. Matthew Daulley, an emergency physician at AdventHealth and Sy Gilmore, began hands-only CPR while Ronaldo Green, a physician assistant at Orlando Health, lo­ cated the nearest automated exter­ nal defibrillator (AED) and directed bystanders to call 911.

Within three minutes, Semi­ nole County Fire Department (SCFD) Station 13 crews arrived on scene and took over advanced lifesaving measures. Their swift response, combined with the physicians’ quick action and avail­ ability of the AED, played a criti­ cal role in Rahming’s survival and recovery at AdventHealth.

Rahming recently reunited with the SCFD crew who helped save his life. During the ceremony, SCFD presented Dr. Matthew Daulley and Sy Gilmore with a Citizen Life Saving Awards, and the following SCFD crew mem­

bers received Life Saving Awards for their exceptional response: Rescue 13: Firefighter/Paramedic Jacob Burkhart; Firefighter Aiden McElroy Tower 13: Lieutenant Paul Parisi; Engineer/Paramedic Nicholas Norelli; Firefighter Tyler Crain Rahming, who is originally from Jamaica, says the experience has inspired him to study cardiol­ ogy so he can help others the way others helped him.

“It’s a miracle that everything aligned—the people, the AED, and the first responders,” Rah­ ming said. “I’m forever grateful for everyone who played a part in saving my life.”

The au­ thor is a correspondent for 1st Re­ sponder News. I do not know him personally, but see his photos in the New Jersey edition of the paper quite often. He is a retired battalion chief from the Camden, NJ Fire Department and has a full page to tell the reader about himself. He is an excellent fire and apparatus pho­ tographer who takes pictures as a labor of love, which will be evident to every reader. A God Fearing

Man (after my own heart), the book is entirely of both black and white, as well as color photos of Philadel­ phia, Camden and other New Jersey towns within the area. Some of the photos include single shots of fire­ fighters of all ranks with their names as well as groups of them posing for his camera. Many of the photos name the individuals in them. The photos are from all different times.

One group is from the Campbell Soup Company which is in Camden.

If you never knew that they had a fire, well they did in 1992 that went to three alarms. Sears Roebuck, a massive complex in Philadelphia also had a fire in 1994 that went to four alarms. Also, One Meridian Plaza in Philadelphia (1991), in which three firefighters died, is cov­ ered. The PFD actually stretched five inch hose into the building under the direction of the fire com­ missioner. The story of the “Fire Pole” which originated in Chicago back in the days of horses, is on page 95 along with a photo of the fire pole in Camden E-7’s quarters.

He is a family man fully supported by his wife in living his dream, and by his daughter, who is a firefighter/EMT in Westmont where they reside. His daughter is featured in several photos on page 87. If you are fire service oriented, you will enjoy this book where both career and volunteer fire departments are featured.

Brush Fire Consumes Large Shed in Spring H ill SPRING HILL, FL - On February 10th, Hernando Firefighters responded to a grass fire behind a dwelling that also extended to a large shed with equipment inside. There was also some damage to a small boat and car next to the building. Engine 5 and Bat 1 were on scene with Brush 12 assisting. A second engine was called to assist with a water source.

Suspected Arson Fire Set by Homeowner in Spring Hill SPRING HILL, FL - On January 24th, Hernando Fire re­ sponded to a dwelling fire on Peach Tree Drive around 2:30 P.M. On dispatch of BC1, BC2, Engines 12 and 14, R12 and R13, Quint 1 and Quint 2, heavy smoke was visible from a distance. On arrival of Police, they encountered a nude man running around the exterior and demanding the Police get off his property. When the FD arrived, the home was pretty well-involved and brush began to catch fire behind the dwelling with some light wind moving along the area. Tanker shuttle was sent to the scene due to lack of hydrants in the area. Pasco County Fire also sent a brush and tanker truck to the scene to assist with the brush fire. It took 45 minutes to bring the fires under control.

The following day on July 22, 2025, while at his home, Firefighter/Paramedic Hodge felt worse and called for help. Firefighter/Paramedic Hodge was trans­ ported to a local hospital where he later passed away.

Texas: Michael Eugene Phillips, 66 Rank: Chief Incident Date: July 5, 2025 Death Date: July 5, 2025 Fire Department: Marble Falls Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Chief Michael Phillips went missing while responding to a call for service on July 5, 2025, during severe storms and flooding that impacted central Texas. The emergency vehicle Chief Phillips was driv­ ing was swept off the roadway by floodwaters. The vehi­ cle was later discovered, but Chief Phillips was not located with it. After days of searching, the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department announced the end of watch for Chief Phillips on July 15, 2025.

Pennsylvania: Ed Margavich, 80 Rank: Fire Police Captain Incident Date: Aug. 8, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 15,2025 Fire Department: Third District Volunteer Fire Company Initial Summary: On August 8, 2025, Fire Police Captain Ed Margavich responded with the Third Dis­ trict Volunteer Fire Company to a vehicle fire that spread to a house. After directing traffic at the scene for a while, Fire Police Captain Margavich was walk­ ing to a nearby fire station to get additional equip­ ment when he fell and broke his femur. He was transported to a trauma center and underwent emer­ gency surgery. Due to complications related to the in­ jury, however, Fire Police Captain Margavich passed away on August 15, 2025.

New Hampshire: Christopher "Brownie" E. Brown, 42 Rank: Captain Incident Date: Aug. 18, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 19, 2025 Fire Department: Northwood Fire Rescue Initial Summary: On the evening of August 18, 2025, Captain Christopher Brown participated in forcible entry training with Northwood Fire Rescue. At 3:12 p.m. on August 19,2025, Captain Brown called the fire station to report that he was in severe back pain and requested an ambulance. Captain Brown was transported to a local hospital where his condition worsened rapidly. Although CPR and other lifesaving measures were initiated, Cap­ tain Brown was pronounced deceased. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Grateful Citizen Makes Heartfelt Return V isit to Citrus County Fire Rescue CITRUS COUNTY, FL - No­ vember 13, 2025 — The crew at Citrus County Fire Rescue’s Sta­ tion 20 in Pine Ridge received a touching surprise when a former pa­ tient stopped by to personally thank the team who re­ sponded to her re­ cent medical emergency.

Her visit brought warm smiles, hugs, and even a custom cake—an expression of gratitude that deeply moved the firefighters and paramedics who helped her.

Though the crews often say they are “just doing their job,” moments like this highlight the profound impact their work has on the lives of those they serve.

Seeing the patient healthy and doing well was a meaningful re­ minder of why they do what they do.

Rescue 20 was staffed by Paramedic Chad Davis and EMT Celeste Avant, who arrived proudly sporting her baby bump.

Engine 20 was represented by Captain/EMT Chris Caravetto (not pictured).

Midway Fire D istrict Promotions GULF BREEZE, FL - The Midway Fire District proudly an­ nounces the promotions of Lieutenant Josh Ward and Cap­ tain Marcus Maggiano. Lt. Ward brings 19 years of dedicated service to the District, while Capt. Maggiano steps into his new role with 20 years of experience. Prior to promotion, both members successfully completed a written examination and an applied skills evaluation before a panel of evaluators. A pinning ceremony was held at Station 35, where their wives had the honor of pinning their badges. Members of the de­ partment congratulate both men on their well-earned promo­ tions and continued service to our community.

W orking Fire in Cedar Hammock Duplex CEDAR HAMMOCK, FL - Just before sunset on January 18th in Cedar Hammock Fire District, units were dispatched to a reported house fire. Units en route reported a large black plume of smoke in the area. On arrival, they found half a duplex well-involved, wires down in the backyard and a well-established brush fire threatening homes. Forces were split to control the fires. Mu­ tual Aid came from Southern Manatee and City of Bradenton.

Second M ultiple-Alarm Fire in Two Days in Cedar Hammock CEDAR HAMMOCK, FL On November 30, 2025, almost 24 hours exactly after another fire.

Cedar Hammock Fire was dis­ patched to a report of a structure fire at 200 Block Magellan Dr. On arrival, fire­ fighters faced a 4,000-sq.-ft. fullyinvolved structure that was surrounded by waterways.

Wind gusts over 25 mph hampered fire­ fighting efforts and pushed fire through­ out the structure.

Shortly after arrival, a second alarm was struck, and then a third alarm was struck not long after.

An Engine Company was sent to the north side of the waterway for structure protection, and to as­ sist on the “D” side. The fire was brought under control in around 90 minutes.

Unfortunately, 12 residents were displaced, and the family lost two dogs in the fire.

Mutual Aid came from South­ ern Manatee Fire & Rescue, and the City of Bradenton, Manatee County EMS, with mutual aid covering stations. The fire is under investigation by Florida State Fire Marshalls.

Seminole County Fire Department Celebrates Graduation of New Class

Quick Knock in Southern Manatee Fire D istrict BRADENTON, FL - Southern Manatee Fire was dispatched to a report of a fire on 28th Ave., December 23, 2025. On arrival, they found a fully involved mobile home. This fire was di­ rectly behind a structure fire they had a few months prior. The fire was located on a narrow dead-end road with limited ac­ cess. Firefighters were hampered by debris in the yard. The City of Bradenton assisted with this incident.

Seminole County, Fla. (De­ cember 15, 2025) - Recently the Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) celebrated the addition of 18 new recruits as part of Class 202502. The ceremony was held at CrossLife Church in Oviedo and led by Fire Chief Matt Kinley. At least half of the new gradu­ ates grew up in or currently live in Seminole County and are now fully prepared to serve their com­ munity as probationary firefighters with the Department.

Many of the recruits graduated from Seminole State in Fire Stan­ dards. SCFD requires a 9-week training before entering the field as a firefighter. The new recruits are now stationed throughout the County at a number of the 21 fire stations at SCFD. Fire Chief Matt Kinley pro­ vided remarks and shared advice from his recruit class at SCFD in 2001. Some things have never changed about fire: the job, and the effort you put in as a crew every day, speaks volumes about the kinship, respect, and trust you build with each other, “said the

Fire chief during his keynote ad­ dress. “The bond you create in a station— spending 24, sometimes 48 hours together—is lifelong. That trust allows us to fight fires, run life-saving EMS calls, and support each other in both good times and bad.”

WILDWOOD, FL — January 21st — To improve emergency response and patient care, Sumter County Fire & EMS held automobile extrication training. During simulated crash situations, crews rehearsed safely extracting victims, controlling hazards, and stabilizing cars. The training placed a strong emphasis on synchronization, communication, and scene safety.

Armor Tuff Emergency Service Flooring The Armor Tuff Staff would like send a "Sincere Thank You" to the Glouces­ ter City Fire Department. Meeting Firefighter Ryan Holmes at the Wildwood Fireman's Convention, Ryan saw the potential to install Armor TuffTiles in most rooms of his station creating a renovation project. With the support of Thomas Quinn, Fire Director, Holmes measured each room and asked Armor Tuff for quotes. Once he realized in­ stalling Armor Tuff Tiles were afford­ able, Holmes ordered tiles for each room. "The transformation was re­ markable! " states Holmes. "We knew the station would look great, but after the rooms were completed and the ap­ paratus bay installed, we were ex­ tremely happy with the results".

Holmes goes on to say; "we had money left over to purchase new Groves Gear Racks and Hose Storage Carts to organize our apparatus bays.

Also a special thanks to Director Quinn for authorizing the purchase.

Alachua County Mobile Home Fire Draws Multi-Agency Response ALACHUA COUNTY, FL Firefighters from Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR), Melrose Fire Department, and Windsor Fire De­ partment responded late Friday night, January 31st, to a fire involv­ ing a double-wide mobile home.

Officials said the incident began as an exterior fire that quickly spread up the side of the struc­ ture and into the attic. Dry conditions and wind con­ tributed to the fire extending beyond the home, igniting a brush fire that threatened nearby structures across several acres.

Crews operated in freezing temperatures and difficult condi­ tions while working to contain both the structure fire and the advancing brush fire. Support from the Florida Forest Service (DOF) was instru­ mental in stopping the spread and bringing the incident under control.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under in­ vestigation.

Sarasota County Annual Fire Fest SARASOTA COUNTY, FL - In January, Sarasota County held their annual Fire Fest at Carlton Reserve to promote the bene­ fits Prescribe Fire. There were dozens of vendors ranging from fire related exhibits to K-9 demonstrations. It was a great, no cost education day for the hundreds of people who attended.

BCFR Welcomes Four New Firefighters During Badge Ceremony BAKER COUNTY, FL - Janu­ ary 16, 2026 — Baker County Fire Rescue formally welcomed four new firefighters into the department during a badge cere­ mony held on Janu­ ary 16th, marking the completion of their orientation training program.

The ceremony recognized Weston Avera, Seth Mont­ calm, Carl Richard­ son, and Bradley Salazar, who are now officially as­ signed to protect and serve Baker County. Family members were in at­ tendance as each firefighter was pre­ sented with their badge, symbolizing their transition from re­ cruit to full member of the depart­ ment.

BCFR leadership congratulated the new hires on their accomplish­ ment and emphasized the responsi­ bility and pride that comes with wearing the badge. The department noted that the addition of the four firefighters strengthens staffing and reinforces its commitment to public safety across the county.

Fire Crews Contain Intense Garage Fire on Persimmons Road in Glen St. Mary GLEN ST. MARY, FL - On February 3rd, firefighters from Macclenny Fire & Rescue and Baker County Fire Rescue re­ sponded to reports of a structure fire with explosions in the 1000 block of Persimmons Road. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving a fully en­ gulfed detached garage, with flames threatening nearby exposures including a residence and two campers.

Firefighters immediately de­ ployed two pre-connected hose lines and initiated an aggressive fire attack while managing multiple hazards, including several small propane tanks actively flaring. A four-apparatus water supply opera­ tion was established, allowing both departments to work seamlessly to­ gether. The fire was brought under control within approximately 23 minutes of arrival, successfully sav­ ing all exposed structures. While no injuries were reported, the homeowners suffered a total loss of the contents inside the large storage garage.

Fire officials expressed appre­ ciation for the coordinated response and extended their thoughts to the affected family as they begin recov­ ery efforts.

Fire Department Supports New High School Fire Academy SANFORD, FL — January 23rd — Through the Seminole County Public Schools Epathways "Get Informed About the Uni­ form" recruitment campaign, the Seminole County Fire Department started reaching out to high school stu­ dents. During the first visit, firefight­ ers spoke with stu­ dents about careers in fire and emer­ gency services at Winter Springs High School.

The Bear Brigade, the school's brand-new fire academy, which is halfway through its first year and has more than 90 stu­ dents enrolled, was also featured during the visit. The curriculum offers exposure to public safety operations, career knowledge, and practical training. According to officials, the outreach encourages students to explore jobs in emer­ gency services, builds relation­ ships with nearby schools, and supports workforce development.

PANAMA CITY, FL - January 23, 2026 — The Panama City Fire Department held its annual Awards Ceremony this afternoon at Fire Station 1, recognizing the excep­ tional dedication, professionalism, and service of its personnel and com­ munity members.

During the cere­ mony, Captain Eric Vossen was honored for 20 years of dis­ tinguished service, while Engineer Eric Ponce received the Attendance Award for exemplary commitment.

Amanda Stifiler was presented with the Community Service Award for her continued support and outreach, and Engineer Jake Taylor and Fire­ lighter Oscar Vega were recognized with the Meritorious Service Award. The department also hon­ ored Gage Lang and Gracie Lang with the Citizen Community Life Saving Award for their courageous actions, and Captain Eric Vossen, Engineer Patrice Chery, and Fire­ lighter Oscar Vega received the Life Saving Award for their heroic re­ sponse. Fire Crews C ontain R e sidential S tru ctu re Fire in G ainesville, In ve stig a tio n Underway GAINESVILLE, FL - On Jan­ uary 20th, Gainesville Fire Rescue crews responded at approximately 9:25 a.m. to a reported working lire at a single-family residential home.

Upon arrival, firelighters encoun­ tered active fire con­ ditions and immediately initi­ ated fire suppression and primary search operations.

Crews were able to place water on the fire quickly, bring­ ing the blaze under control within 10 minutes and beginning ventilation efforts to clear smoke from the structure. One individual was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and three residents were displaced as a result of the fire.

Gainesville Fire Rescue is working with the American Red Cross to assist those affected. Fol­ lowing an initial investigation, the fire is suspected to be the result of arson, and authorities are actively investigating the incident.

Fast-Moving Fire Destroys Multiple Mobile Homes in Spring Hill SPRING HILL, FL - On Feb­ ruary 11th, Hernando Fire and Rescue were receiving calls for a lire at the Holiday Springs RV Park.

On the dispatch, BC1 and BC 3, En­ gines 2 and 6, Quint 1, R1 and R12 were assigned.

On arrival of Quint 1, heavy lire and smoke was coming from multi­ ple mobile homes and RV's. Quint 1 immediately went into defensive mode attack. A line was stretched as they waited for additional en­ gines to arrive and assist with a water supply.

The lire was spreading very quickly and threatening other homes, so additional help was called. Pasco County was called to assist at the scene ,as it took about one hour to bring the blaze under control.

The owner of the mobile home had gone to work. One civilian did make entry to the home and was able to get her dog out safely. After the lire brought under control, a total count of two RV's and two mobile homes were destroyed.

One RV and two mobile homes sustained heat damage.

No injuries were reported, and the lire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal's office.

Melbourne Beach Crews Fight Fence Fire w ith Live Power Line Involved MELBOURNE BEACH, FL As the rest of the town slept on January 22nd, at 12:30 a.m., the Mel­ bourne Beach Vol. Fire Dept. re­ sponded to a large fence fire on First Ave, caused by a FPL power line in the trees. MBFD re­ quested the grid be shut down as a safety precaution before putting water on the fire.

Some observers may wonder why this firefighter is not actively extinguishing the fire despite the visible flames and available water supply and backup. His decision is informed by his volunteer training, which emphasizes awareness of potential hazards such as concealed power lines among the trees. Water was delib­ erately withheld from this section of the fence line until Florida Power and Light deactivated the electrical grid. This approach highlights that effective train­ ing—rooted in real-life experi­ ence rather than theoretical instruction—is essential for safety.

Greater Naples Crews Promote W ildfire Safety NAPLES, FL - On January 17th, the Greater Naples Fire Res­ cue District hosted a joint press conference with the Collier County Sheriff's Office, Florida Forest Service, Marco Island Fire Rescue, Naples Fire-Rescue Department, and North Col­ lier Fire Rescue District to confront an early brush fire sea­ son. Officials say dry conditions over the last two years have raised the risk of wildfires in Southwest Florida. Firefighters and law enforcement officials emphasized prevention, public awareness, and coordinated action. Residents were asked to clear dry grass at least 30 feet from their homes, properly dis­ pose of smoking products, and adhere to burn bans and local limitations. Officials also encouraged families to develop emergency plans, prepare important documents and medica­ tions, and sign up for local alerts.

VENICE, FL - In February, Venice Fire Rescue finished live fire training at Sarasota Technical College.

The training focused on coordinated operations and critical fireground abilities. In a controlled envi­ ronment created to mimic actual emergency situations, firefighters rehearsed inside attack, search, and ventilation. According to officials, live fire training is still essential for personnel to maintain their preparedness for complicated situations and for achieving state and federal regulations. Additionally, under actual stress, the curriculum placed a strong emphasis on communication, teamwork, and safety protocols. According to the agency, continuous training ensures crews are equipped to safe­ guard local people and guests by fostering professional growth and enhancing regional collaboration through the use of common facilities and resources.

One Confirmed Dead A fter Morning Duplex Fire in Pensacola PENSACOLA, FL - On Jan­ uary 21st, Escambia County Fire Rescue responded at 8:56 a.m. to a reported duplex fire in the 900 block of Breman Avenue after re­ ceiving multiple Jump to file# calls reporting 021626138 heavy smoke, flames, and possi­ ble entrapment.

Fire and EMS crews arrived to find extensive fire damage in the multi-residential structure. Fire­ fighters conducted suppression and search operations. During the interior search, rescuers discov­ ered one victim, who was later confirmed deceased. The fire was brought under control by 9:42 a.m.

Both units of the duplex sus­ tained significant damage. One resident was displaced and re­ ceived assistance from the Amer­ ican Red Cross. The Escambia County Sheriffs Office, Florida Power & Light, and Emergency Services Gulf Coast Ladder 34 also assisted at the scene. The Bu­ reau of Fire and Arson is investi­ gating the cause.

VEHICLE NEWS Hernando County Fire and Rescue have put into service 3 new Quint to the apparatus fleet. Quints 1, 4 and 8 formely (Engines 1, 4 and 8) went into service at the end of their quarter of the year. The Quints, which are Sutphen mid-mounts, are equipped with 500-gallon water tanks, 50-gallon foam cell and 75-foot aerials. This adds to the aerial capabilities (the only other aerial is a Tower Ladder).

Two-Car Crash w ith Entrapment in Northwest Gainesville GAINESVILLE, FL - Gainesville Fire Rescue crews responded to a two-vehicle motor vehicle accident with entrapment at the intersection of Northwest 39th Avenue and Northwest 43rd Street on January 29th. Firefighters arrived to find sig­ nificant vehicle damage and one occupant trapped. Crews quickly stabilized the scene, performed a safe extrication, and provided patient care. One individual was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Law enforcement and emergency responders managed traffic control while crews worked to clear the roadway. Motorists in the area experi­ enced delays, and officials advised drivers to use caution and consider alternate routes until the scene was fully cleared.

BRADENTON, FL - City of Bradenton was dispatched to a house fire mid-afternoon on Sunday, February 9th. As units pulled out of the station, they reported a column of dark smoke showing. On arrival, they found a two-story structure with the “D” side well-involved. All residents escaped without injury. Firefighters laddered Division 2 to gain access, as the stairs leading up were unsafe. The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist the displaced residents.

BAKER COUNTY, FL - Baker County Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire in the 10,000 block of Persimmon Road overnight on February 3rd. Firefighters arrived to find a detached garage completely engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to other surrounding exposures. Crews quickly de­ ployed handlines and worked to protect the residence while conducting suppression operations. As operations to effec­ tively extinguish the fire lasted many hours, additional re­ sources were sent in to assist with water delivery, overhaul, and scene assistance.

Quick Response by Oviedo Crews Lim its Damage in Car Fire OVIEDO, FL - A reported car fire in a parking lot close to Broadway Street and Mitchell Hammock Road on January 20th prompted the Oviedo Fire Department to respond. When units arrived, they discovered a passenger car completely en­ gulfed in flames. In order to stop the fire from spreading to neighboring cars and property, firefighters swiftly set up a handline. After securing the area, crews looked for potential dangers, such as fuel spillage and possible exposure to nearby buildings. There were no reported injuries. While ac­ tivities were being conducted, there was a small disruption to local traffic. According to officials, prompt notification and ac­ tion reduced damage and safeguarded the public. The Oviedo Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.

Gainesville Crews Quickly Contain NW 36th Street Fire GAINESVILLE, FL — Gainesville Fire Rescue responded on February 16th to a reported home structure fire near Northwest 36th Street and Northwest 20th Avenue. SPRING HILL, FL - Hernando County Fire, along with Pasco County Fire, responded to this collision on February 19th that sent four people to area hospitals. On arrival, one woman was still slightly trapped in the auto. Firefighters were able to extricate her without the use of the Jaws of Life.

Early-Morning Fire Contained at Downtown Gainesville Commercial Building GAINESVILLE, FL Gainesville Fire Rescue crews re­ sponded early Sunday morning, February 2nd, to a building fire in the 200 block of Southwest 2nd Avenue after reports of heavy fire activ­ ity.

At approxi­ mately 5:30 a.m., units arrived on scene to find signifi­ cant fire showing from the exterior of a commercial build­ ing.

Firefighters quickly initiated suppression ef­ forts, bringing the fire under con­ trol and preventing it from extending into the main structure.

Crews also conducted primary search operations to ensure no oc­ cupants were inside at the time of the incident.

According to Gainesville Fire Rescue, the fire appears to have originated from an exterior porch area. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

PANAMA CITY, FL — February 3rd — At a recent department func­ tion, the Panama City Fire Department honored two firefighters for their years of service and dedication to the community. John Bradt, a retired firefighter, was honored for his 25 years of service, which represented a lifelong dedication to public safety and emergency re­ sponse. Throughout his tenure with the agency, Bradt contributed to firefighting, rescue, and community engagement operations. Fire­ fighter Ricardo Hamilton was also acknowledged for his five years of service. Department leaders cited his ongoing dedication, team­ work, and emphasis on training as critical to everyday operations.

IV Acetaminophen Now First-Line in Sarasota SARASOTA, FL — January 29th — In an effort to provide opi­ oid-sparing care in the prehospital context, Sarasota County Emergency Services has made intravenous (IV) acetaminophen the first-line treatment for moderate to se­ vere pain. The mod­ ification encourages early pain manage­ ment by paramedics in the field and eliminates routine opioid use from front-line equip­ ment. The procedure is in line with recommendations from the Na­ tional Association of EMS Physi­ cians and studies that demonstrate IV acetaminophen can effectively relieve pain on par with IV opioids while avoiding side effects includ­ ing drowsiness or respiratory de­ pression.

Studies have also shown that because of access issues and wor­ ries about opioid side effects, pain may go untreated prior to hospital­ ization. According to officials, the change supports contemporary, ev­ idence-based emergency medical practices while enhancing patient safety, comfort, and care.

M utual Aid Supports Jay Brush Fire PANAMA CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT

JAY, FL - According to the Jay Volunteer Fire Department, SQ14 and E14 responded on mutual assistance to a brush fire that was posing a threat to a neighboring structure, February 3rd. In order to con­ fine the fire and safeguard exposures in arid and forested areas, crews re­ sponded and collaborated with nearby firefighters.

To stop the spread, firefighters set up control lines, attacked the fire, and supplied water. No in­ juries were reported, and the struc­ ture was protected by the concerted effort. To keep an eye on the situa­ tion and deal with hot spots, crews stayed on the scene.

Strong mutual aid partnerships are essential during brush and wildland occurrences, according to department officials. The Jay Vol­ unteer Fire Department expressed gratitude to the supporting agen­ cies for their continued dedication to neighborhood safety and re­ gional response.

Sarasota County Special Operations Team Compete in Daytona SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — January 26th— At the Florida Flazardous Materials Symposium in Daytona Beach, Sarasota County Emergency Services revealed that its Special Operations Team partic­ ipated in the Florida Fiazardous Materials Team competition.

Teams from all around Florida came together for the event, which used timed challenges and realistic scenarios to assess technical pro­ ficiency, teamwork, and operational readiness. Lt. James Callahan-Bond, Lt. Ben Timpe, Firefighter/EMT Bryan Boley, and Firefighter/Paramedic Izak Schaefer were all part of the Sarasota squad.

Out of nine participating teams, the group finished third overall.

Flazard identification, incident man­ agement, decontamination, and safe mitigation techniques were the main topics of the scenarios. At­ tending the symposium, according to department authorities, promotes professional development, regional cooperation, and continuing train­ ing.

The members were com­ mended by Sarasota County Emer­ gency Services for representing the county and enhancing preparedness for technical rescue and hazardous material situations..

VEHICLE NEWS Bonifay Fire-Rescue officially put its new Pumper 1 into service on January 30th, signifying a sig­ nificant transition for the agency and the community it serves. The new apparatus replaces a GMC Sierra fire truck that has served Bonifay since 1986, responding to countless fires, rescues, and emergency calls. During a push-in ceremony attended by firefighters, local politicians, and citi­ zens, several former and current members shared their recollections of the long-running truck.

The new pumper was purchased using funds allocated by state legislators and is equipped with updated safety measures, contemporary firefighting gear, and increased dependability. Officials claimed the equipment will allow staff to respond more quickly and safely during emergencies.

P ooler Crews A ssist B loom ingdale a t W orking Fire POOLER, GA — Pooler Fire-Rescue firefighters went to a re­ ported working structure fire in Bloomingdale on Monday af­ ternoon, February 16th, as a mutual assistance call. Truck 601, Engine 601, Battalion 601, and Chief 601 were dispatched to respond. Upon arrival, firefighters assisted firefighting oper­ ations, conducted primary searches, and performed vertical ventilation to improve conditions inside the structure. Fire­ fighters collaborated with Bloomingdale units to put the fire under control and minimize additional damage. After the fire was contained, companies completed overhaul operations to look for any residual hot spots. All Pooler units later cleared the scene and returned to service in the city.

My friend, I know that you have gone through tough times. Your marriage was tough, and it did not last. Some­ times, we go through this for rea­ sons that we cannot figure out. I know that many times we hear peo­ ple say that we should stay together but sometimes we are abused.

You have been betrayed by someone that was close to you, and you trusted this person. Many times, we would not want to forgive this person, but you have risen above it and continue to show love to them.

I know that you are uncomfort­ able being around people. I know that at times most if not all of us feel that way one time or another. There are times when we need to be pres­ ent not only to help others but also ourselves.

Someone told you that you did not have the skill or talent to do what you felt in your heart to do.

There are people that always try to put us down. Are they jealous or just mean spirited? There are times that if we are willing to learn, we can be very successful. If we let oth­ ers speak into our lives, we need to make sure that we have the right people, and that includes what we tell ourselves.

People who may be challenging may be put into our lives. It is how

we let them affect our lives that re­ ally matters. You are better than they think. They do not see your true po­ tential.

You may have dreams, while you sleep, that may seem real. Is there something that you need to do that is now eating at you? Or are you seeing something about the future? You get inspiration to do something or a warning. Let's hope we remember what we need to.

I watch as you go through your challenges and many times, I see some of the same things that I have lived through. It is when we have walked similar paths that we develop empathy and be there to support one another.

I know that at times, you may be depressed and want to give up but I ask you to press on and fight the good fight. Sure, take a little time to lick your wounds and regroup for your next attack on life but don't give up. You have no idea who is watch­ ing you and what example that you are setting for the person who says nothing but only watches you.

You are my dear friend, and I have watched how you have grown.

Lean into Psalms. Know that the fight is not over yet because God has not called you home. You still have a mission. Your work is not done. You have not finished effecting people's lives and have not met all the people that God wants you to meet.

Have faith.

A thens Crews Handle R ollover, F ire, and Downed Power Line ATHENS, GA - On February 9th, about midday, units from the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department responded to a rollover collision on Cleveland Road. The crash knocked down a power post and started a grass fire, which spread to the vehicle and eventually ignited the fuel tank. Firefighters from Engine 22, Rescue 4, Engine 26, and Tanker 1 arrived and administered first aid to the occupants while addressing several dangers on the scene, technicians put out the vehicle and brush fires, guarded the area, and supported law officers with traffic control while utility technicians repaired the bro­ ken power line. Two victims were transferred to a local hos­ pital, with injuries that were unclear at the time.

EASTANOLLEE FIRE DEPARTMENT

No Injuries After Eastanollee Crews Contain House Fire EASTANOLLEE, GA — A reported structure fire was responded to by the Eastanollee Fire De­ partment on January 30th. After 13 minutes, crews arrived on the scene and found that the house was emitting moderate amounts of smoke. In roughly fifteen minutes, firefighters used an internal attack to put out the fire. The Big Smith Fire Department and the Martin Fire Depart­ ment offered mutual aid. It was found that the fire originated in the kitchen and was contained there, preventing additional damage to the building. There were no reported injuries.

Tybee Crews Rescue Stranded Kayaker Near Creek TYBEE ISLAND, GA - In Jan­ uary, Tybee Island Fire Rescue ar­ rived to a report of a missing kayaker whose vessel had taken on water near Tybee Creek. Rescue swimmers deployed the depart­ ment's jet ski, SAR 1, and began a joint search with Marine Patrol and the United States Coast Guard.

Crews encoun­ tered difficult condi­ tions such as frigid water, sustained 30 mph gusts, little vis­ ibility, high tide, and heavy surf. After a two-hour search, rescuers discovered a young man stuck in a marsh over a mile from the Alley 3 boat ramp. The person was waving a paddle to signal for aid. Rescue swimmers made con­ tact and deployed a life-saving line to safely transport the kayaker and his vessel out of the swamp. EMS evaluated both the patient and the rescuers on the scene. There were no injuries recorded.

Officials said the incident high­ lights the importance of prepara­ tion, proper equipment, and interagency coordination during water emergencies.

Fire Quickly Contained at Two-Story Residence in Statesboro STATESBORO, GA - At 11:28 a.m. on February 13th, the Statesboro Fire Department re­ sponded to the 100 block of Gentilly Drive for a report of a structure fire in an inhabited two-story multi-family house.

Battalion 1 and Tmck 1 arrived in three minutes and reported substantial smoke coming from the secondfloor windows and roof area.

Firefighters launched an inten­ sive inside attack, immediately lo­ cating the source of the fire and restricting it to the room of origin.

Within five minutes, additional first responders arrived and helped with the overhaul and ventilation. The apartment experienced moderate fire damage in the room of origin, as well as smoke damage across the second level. There were no injuries recorded.

The CAFE unit and the Ameri­ can Red Cross were notified to assist the displaced residents. The reason of the fire remains under investiga­ tion.

COCHRAN, GA — February 10th — Cochran Fire & Emergency Services firemen were honored at a recent city council meeting for their actions during a Christmas morning residential fire.

The personnel were awarded for entering a blazing residence and rescuing a casualty, which the department classified as a confirmed save. The celebration was attended by city authorities and community residents who wanted to congratulate the firefighters for their collaboration and dedication to public safety. Sergeant Kleinfeld was acknowledged, as were firefighters McElroy, Q. Nguyen, B. Nguyen, Mleczko, and Angus.

Quick Response Leads to Successful Child Rescue in Macon-Bibb MACON-BIBB COUNTY, GA - On January 31st, the MaconBibb County Fire Department responded to an emergency on York Lane involving a child who had fallen into a storm drain with an estimated 12-foot drop. Engine 16 arrived on scene and immediately initiated rescue operations, utilizing coordi­ nated teamwork and established rescue procedures to safely reach and remove the child from the drain. The child was suc­ cessfully rescued without further incident. Fire department of­ ficials praised the crew’s professionalism, quick decision-making, and dedication to community safety, noting that their prompt actions were critical to the positive outcome.

Feed Truck Fire Contained at Twin M ill Drive Facility MAYSVILLE, GA - On January 20th, emergency crews from Maysville Fire, Commerce Fire, Har­ risburg Fire, Jackson County Cl, and Med 7 responded to a reported commercial vehicle fire on Twin Mill Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters found a feed truck loaded with feed fully involved in fire. Crews quickly initiated suppression operations and were able to contain the fire to the truck itself, preventing damage to nearby vehicles and surrounding structures. The coordinated response and rapid fire control resulted in no reported injuries and minimized property loss.

Baldw in County Fire Crews Contain S tructure Fire on Snyder Road BALDWIN COUNTY, GA On January 29th, Baldwin County Fire Rescue units re­ sponded to a residential structure fire on Snyder Road, where crews from Engine 5, En­ gine 3, Squad 17, Battalion 1, Chief 1, and Chief 3 found a working fire upon arrival.

Firefighters ini­ tiated an aggressive transitional attack, successfully containing the fire to one end of the home and prevent­ ing further spread. Investigators believe the fire was caused by a generator powering heaters and a light inside the residence. No in­ juries were reported, and all occu­ pants escaped safely.

East Ellijay Crews Battle Overnight Fire ELLIJAY, GA - At at 11:52 p.m. on January 30th, Gilmer County Fire Rescue responded to a reported house lire in East Ellijay, with Engine 15 from the City of Ellijay providing mutual aid. Within nine minutes, the first unit arrived on the scene and reported that the home was completely destroyed.

Firefighters set up hose lines and began suppression operations while creating a water shuttle owing to a lack of nearby hydrants.

Crews labored to ensure a steady flow of water while operations con­ tinued. One occupant was inside the residence at the time of the fire.

Morrow Firefighter Makes Department History MORROW, GA - The City of Morrow Fire Department recog­ nized Firefighter Meagan Ball for achieving the rank of Fire­ fighter III, becoming the first woman in department history to earn this certification. She was formally presented with her new helmet shield during a recent ceremony. The Firefighter III level requires a minimum of 200 hours of classroom and hands-on training through the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth. Officials said Ball also traveled to several partner agencies to complete advanced requirements, strengthening her operational knowledge and skills.

DOUGLASGAFIRE DEPARTMENT The Douglas Fire Department announced the arrival of its newest apparatus, a Fouts Mini-Pumper Fire Rescue Truck. Officials stated that the unit is intended to improve response times and provide better flexibility throughout a wide range of emergency occur­ rences. The mini-pumper offers enhanced maneuverability in tight areas, making it well suited for medical calls, small fires, and inci­ dents where quick access is critical. The apparatus is outfitted with contemporary firefighting gear, medical equipment, and water delivery capabilities, allowing firefighters to start operations be­ fore more resources arrive.

TYBEE ISLAND, GA - Tybee Island Fire Rescue honored Fire­ fighter Matthew Quarles with a Meritorious Award from the Police and Firemen's Insur­ ance Association for his efforts during a life-saving water res­ cue. The medal rec­ ognizes his training, devotion, and com­ mitment to public safety.

At 4:50 a.m. on November 23 rd, 2025, workers responded to reports of a person in the water near the pier.

Units spotted the victim about 80 yards offshore with the assistance of a spectator who used a flashlight to direct them. Firefighter Quarles, a qualified rescue swimmer, entered the water and found the victim, who was unable to move due to cold ex­ posure. He rescued the person from a pier pylon and swam him back to land. The patient, who had fallen from the pier and remained in 62degree water for more than three hours, was transported to the hospi­ tal and treated for hypothermia.

Officials said the incident re­ flects strong teamwork and profes­ sional training.

Residents Assessed After Lewis Road Blaze in Cherokee County CANTON, GA — Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Serv­ ices responded early Tuesday morning, February 3rd, to a resi­ dential structure fire on Lewis Road in unincorporated Cherokee County, near Canton. Fire­ fighters arrived to discover the resi­ dence completely engulfed in flames and immediately began suppression operations as EMS workers as­ sessed occupants on the scene.

Three people were evaluated, and one was taken to a neighboring hospital in stable condition. One household dog died in the fire, while another survived. The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.

Officials highlighted that this was the county's second residential structure fire in a 12-hour period.

February 5, 2026 — The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department proudly announced that Chief Michael C. Stone has been recog­ nized by the Georgia State Firefighters Association as Company Officer of the Year, a prestigious honor highlighting outstanding leadership, professionalism, and dedication to the fire service.

Chief Stone was formally recognized during a ceremony at the Georgia State Capitol, where state leaders, fire service profession­ als, and colleagues gathered to celebrate his achievements. The recognition reflects Chief Stone’s more than two decades of dis­ tinguished service, his commitment to firefighter safety and train­ ing, and his leadership within specialized teams that enhance emergency response capabilities across the state. Department leadership praised Chief Stone for setting a high standard of ex­ cellence and for his unwavering commitment to serving both the community and the fire service profession.

COLLINS, GA - A structure fire on Hickory Hollow Lane near Collins was reported on January 20th. The Reidsville Fire Depart­ ment, along with multiple mutual aid organizations, re­ sponded.

Crews promptly started suppression opera­ tions after the first responding unit re­ ported substantial flames coming from the house.

Collins Fire Department, Tat­ tnall County Fire, Smith State Prison Fire, Rogers State Prison Fire, and Tattnall County EMS were among the agencies that pro­ vided assistance.

After bringing the fire under control in roughly 25 minutes, firefighters stayed on the scene to complete overhaul and put out hotspots. There were no reported injuries. The house is regarded as a complete loss after suffering se­ vere fire, smoke, and water dam­ age. The family stated that multiple animals were missing, and the source of the fire is still being investigated.

The Forsyth County Fire Department honored Captain Shane Lively after he retired after 33 years of service. Lively began his career as a volunteer before becoming one of the department's first paid employees as the organization grew. Throughout his tenure, he played a vital role in establishing and developing nu­ merous of the department's special operations squads.

CAMDEN COUNTY, GA - On February 15th, firefighters from the St. Marys Fire Department took part in the Firefighter Challenge at the 2026 Southeast Georgia Bridge Run, running the 5K race while dressed in full turnout gear. The team represented both the department and the fire service during the physically rigorous competition. Team St. Marys Firefighters finished second, ex­ hibiting outstanding collaboration, preparedness, and endurance. Firefighter Chris McCabe, who joined the agency a few months ago, was also recognized for his performance, placing third in the individual challenge.

Burn Barrel Sparks Shed Fire on BJ’s Way in Pooler POOLER, GA - Earlier on Jan­ uary 30th, Pooler Fire-Rescue fire­ fighters were summoned to the 1200 block of DJ's Way for a re­ ported structure fire. Engine 601 arrived first and discovered a shed on fire, with flames spreading throughout the yard.

The shed fire was brought under control, and personnel undertook

an overhaul to ensure that no hid­ den fire remained.

Officials determined the cause of the fire to be a bum barrel that ignited dry vegetation, which spread quickly due to dry condi­ tions and light winds. No injuries were reported.

Garden City Crews Contain Vehicle Fire GARDEN CITY, GA - On February 3rd, Garden City Fire-Res­ cue units responded to a reported vehicle fire at Kicklighter Way and Highway 80, which threatened a nearby structure.

When crews arrived, they found a passenger vehicle with a fire in the engine compartment. Firefighters used a handline to quickly get the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to surrounding vehicles or buildings. There were no injuries reported.

Alternate Careers in the Fire Service IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

The first occupation that in­ evitably comes to mind when thinking of the fire service is fire­ fighter and for obvious reasons.

Firefighter positions are varied and can be divided in a couple different ways. First by separat­ ing the volunteer from the career side but this title can also be di­ vided into interior, exterior and wildland. However, once you venture into working with “Old Man Fire” what becomes appar­ ent is that there are a multitude of other different titles within the fire service.

Interestingly enough is that both the public and private sector have an equal claim to alternative fire service careers.

Access to these other fire serv­ ice careers typically start out as firefighters i.e. you would have to train and, in some cases, work as a firefighter before being able to accept other posi­ tions and responsibilities. This is because being a firefighter provides a solid foundational understanding of fire emergen­ cies that can then be applied to other positions based also on future training and education.

If we are just talking about and starting with career firefighting most if not all of the titles de­ fined here are just simply ad­ vancement and not necessarily an “alternate career”. This arti­ cle, however will focus on de­ scribing several fire service titles but from the perspective of someone transitioning into the fire service from a previously chosen and different career path.

The volunteer fire service is ac­ tually very good in this regard.

Volunteers can not only con­ tinue in their chosen careers but also be firefighters thus building up training and experience to advance in the fire service. For example, training classes can be taken to advance into several ti­ tles such as fire instructor, safety officer, fire investigator, fire marshal and fire inspector while still working your “day job”. For the purpose of this ar­ ticle the titles listed here are based on actual positions within

New York State and may vary slightly in other states.

Let’s briefly take a look at a few: Fire Instructor: The primary re­ sponsibilities being instructing and teaching courses in firefight­ ing. Typically, instructors are provided with a set curriculum that must be followed. A back­ ground in education and/or coursework as a fire instructor is required. Most fire instructors are employed at the state or county level. In some states (Pennsylvania comes to mind) fire instructors work out of com­ munity colleges.

Fire Investigator: This title fo­ cuses on the cause and origin of a fire. Investigators would deter­ mine if arson was involved as well and possibly testify in court.

This can be a public or private sector position with insurance companies hiring within the lat­ ter.

Fire Inspector: Inspectors are in­ volved in compliance with fire codes. The responsibilities of a fire inspector can also be inte­ grated in other titles from code enforcement officer to fire pro­ tection specialists and even parking enforcement officer with respect to ensuring compliance with fire lanes and hydrants.

Safety Officer: Individuals work­ ing under this title would moni­ tor, assess and mitigate hazardous situations on the fireground ensuring personnel safety Fire Marshal (specific to the New York Racing Association NYRA): The Fire Marshal reports to the NYRA Fire Inspector (Chief) and is responsible for en­ suring full compliance with Na­ tional Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and New York State Building Codes as they pertain to fire safety. Key responsibilities in­ clude fire prevention and inspec­ tion, emergency management and response and fire code com­ pliance and reporting.

Fire Coordinator: In NYS each county has a regional coordina­ tor that manages inspectors, in­ vestigators and training opportunities. The top position is the only paid position while all other deputy coordinators are volunteer.

Dispatcher: Answers emergency

and non-emergency calls, dis­ patches appropriate resources, communicates with the public and other first responders. They may provide life-saving instruc­ tions to callers. Maintain accu­ rate logs of calls, incident times and locations.

So, what is the first step? What if you finally decide to take the plunge into the fire service and potentially changing your occu­ pation or at the very least sup­ plementing your current career.

Start with some online research.

Typically, you can find educa­ tion, training and experience re­ quirements for a position of interest at your states and/or county fire service website. NYS Fire Coordinators website (NYSFCA.org) along with the NYS As­ sociation of Fire Chiefs (https //www. nysfirechiefs.com/) are also good starts. Addition­ ally, the National Fire Academy (https://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfa/) has great information on fire service careers including a num­ ber of free online courses.

Next start making some phone calls. Talk to others that have joined the fire service and/or have used the volunteer fire service to advance and transition their profession. Lastly, visit your local firehouse and talk to an officer to start the ball rolling by applying. Membership in a local volunteer fire company will allow you to start building your fire service resume that will eventually lead to being qualified to apply for any of the listed po­ sitions and then some.

Using my own story, like most kids I had wanted to be a fire­ fighter but life has a funny way of coming at you sometimes and didn’t become a volunteer until age 46. By then opportunities as a career firefighter had passed me by. Luckily, a passion for the fire service could still be satis­ fied with other, alternate posi­ tions. As a volunteer I took classes to build my fire service portfolio to the point of being qualified to work under several

Changing careers can be risky as there are so many unknowns and there would a lot of factors to weigh. It can certainly affect your financial situation; retire­ ment plans as well as personal and family relationships to name

a few. Start by asking yourself “Would I be happier staying in my current career or starting over in the fire service.” Just like on the fireground though, be de­ cisive and don’t wait. In the end the fire service represents a number of challenging careers and the risk is worth the reward.

Mutual Aid Supports Agricultural Fire Response in Reidsville

ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT

REIDSVILLE, GA — In re­ sponse to a brush and chicken coop fire on Jink Lanier Road, February 2nd, the Reidsville Fire Depart­ ment joined Collins, Tattnall County, Cobbtown, Rogers State Prison, and Georgia Forestry.

When crews arrived, they discovered the fire was threatening neighboring agricul­ tural structures and spreading through dry vegetation. To prevent forward spread, forestry units set contain­ ment lines and firefighters set up handlines.

In rural areas, operations con­ centrated on coordinated wildland tactics, water supply, and exposure prevention. No one was hurt when the fire was put out. Officials em­ phasized the significance of early reporting and stated that wind and dry weather can raise the risk of wildfires.

Athens Crews Handle Two Structure Fires Overnight ATHENS, GA - On January 25th, members of the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department's Station 6 A-shift responded to two structure fires overnight, one of which occurred early in the morning off Winterville Road. Crews were dispatched around 4:30 a.m. to a reported structure fire. Engine 26 came and promptly extinguished the fire, averting additional damage to the home. During the operation, firefighters rescued a cat from the home. Additional units participated with suppression, search, ventilation, and overhaul to ensure the fire was com­ pletely extinguished and no risks existed. Engine 26, Engine 29, Engine 25, Engine 21, Rescue 4, Hazmat 1, Ladder 1, and Battalion 2 were among the units that responded.

AMERICUS, GA — A by­ stander reported a car accident near Hooks Mill Road and Indian Road with suspected en­ trapment on Febru­ ary 8th, prompting Sumter County Fire Rescue, to respond.

The department's dive squad was called in when the first responding teams discovered a car half submerged in Philema Pond.

While firefighters guarded the area and worked with law authori­ ties, a diver ventured into the frigid water to search. Responders con­ cluded that the driver had self-extricated and gone before they arrived after thoroughly inspecting the scene. A nearby towing com­ pany later removed the car. There were no further recorded injuries, and one diver suffered from minor hypothermia.

At the Carnes Creek Fire Department, firefighters from the New Hope and Carnes Creek Fire Departments recently finished their yearly Basic Life Support and CPR recertification.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — January 30th, 2026 — Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services spon­ sored a graduation ceremony for 19 recruits at the First Baptist Church in Woodstock. The program began at 7:00 p.m. with remarks by Chief Danny Carder, followed by an invocation by Fire Chaplain David Price. The Swafford Sisters performed the National Anthem, while the CCFES Honor Guard pre­ sented the flags. Graham Luca and Casey Little, class spokespersons, remarked on the group's train­ ing and expressed gratitude to the teachers and families for their support. Several honors were handed out, including the Douglas Clark Waters Jr. Award to Richie Jordan, the Pinnacle Award to Preston Steele, and the Jill Mabley Star of Life Award to Casey Little. The graduates, now certified as Firefighter II and Advanced EMTs, began field assignments on February 1st at stations across Cherokee County.

Baldwin County Fire Rescue Quickly Contains Structure Fire on Highway 212

NEWTON COUNTY FIRE SERVICE

BALDWIN COUNTY, GA Baldwin County Fire Rescue units responded to a structure fire on Highway 212, Janu­ ary 26th. Engine 7, Tanker 19, Squad 17, Tanker 6, and Battalion 1 were dispatched to the incident, where firefighters encoun­ tered fire contained within a wall surrounding a chim­ ney.

Crews initiated a swift and aggressive fire attack, success­ fully preventing the fire from ex­ tending further into the structure.

The residence sustained fire dam­ age to one wall and water damage as a result of suppression efforts; however, due to the rapid re­ sponse and coordinated opera­ tions, the overall structure was saved. No injuries were reported.

With assistance from the department's training division, the Newton County Fire Service A Shift recently finished its yearly live-fire train­ ing, which focused on preparedness and safe operations.

Firefighters from all around the area came together for advanced training at the Screven County Fire Department for a four-day Georgia Public Safety Training Center Live Fire Instructor course. Fire be­ havior, firefighter safety, teaching methods, and overseeing live fire operations in controlled settings were the main topics of the training. The program was successfully completed by nine department members, enhancing the agency's capacity for training and fostering regional collaboration.

Coweta EMS Members Earn Regional Honors COWETA COUNTY, GA - February 6th - Coweta County Fire Rescue workers were recently honored at the area 4 EMS Council's annual Awards Dinner, which recognizes out­ standing EMS professionals around the area. The council represents agencies in Coweta, Heard, Meriwether, Carroll, Fayette, Henry, Spalding, Butts, Lamar, Upson, and Pike counties. It meets on a regular basis to discuss emergency medical service needs and issues. This year, Randy "Bo" Nichols was voted Paramedic of the Year, and Isabela LoGalbo was named EMT of the Year. Both were acknowledged for their outstanding clinical performance, dedication to pa­ tient care, and commitment to community service.
