UNITS RESPOND TO CAR PINNED UNDER TRACTOR TRAILER

New York, NY - Units responded to Box-8982 on the New England Thruway (I95) Northbound, just north of Middletown Rd. after the Country Club exit, for a car that was pinned under a tractor-trailer. Engine-89 and Tower Ladder-50 arrived first, reporting they had a car underneath the trailer, but the victim was already out.

Second Queens Two-Alarm Fire Within 20 Minutes Queens, NY - On August 25th, firefighters responded to a second two-alarm fire in Queens, located only 15 blocks away from the initial two-alarm fire they had just knocked down. This fire was located at 69th St. and Myrtle Ave., in a two-story building with stores on the first-floor and apartments above. Four lines were used to extinguish the fire on the second-floor.

Units Respond to Car Pinned Under Tractor Trailer New York, NY - Units responded to Box-8982 on the New England Thruway (I95) Northbound, just north of Middletown Rd. after the Country Club exit, for a car that was pinned under a tractor-trailer.

Engine-89 and Tower Ladder-50 arrived first, reporting they had a car underneath the trailer, but the victim was already out.

EMS packaged and transported the victim, who had serious injuries

JUMP TO FILE #081116109 but was in stable condition. Witnesses at the scene stated that the driver of the Toyota Corolla was changing lanes when he lost control and slammed into the trailer, which brought the highway traffic to a screeching halt.

Ladder-50 used the Hurst tool

with the assistance of Squad-61 to free the vehicle from beneath the trailer, while NYPD shut down all three lanes of traffic during the Monday morning commute. Within 15 minutes, at least one lane was reopened while the Toyota was towed away. Units inspected the trailer, which had undercarriage damage and also had to be towed from the scene.

Fire in Brooklyn Consumes Three Brownstones

Brooklyn, NY - Firefighters responded to Lewis Ave. and Lafayette Ave. on September 3rd for reports of a fire in a four-story, brownstone structure. The fire started on the first-floor before extending to the second, third and then fourth floors, as well as to the cockloft. The blaze also extended to exposures two and four. Six lines were used to knock the fire down.

Firefighters Battle Six-Alarm Blaze in Staten Island Staten Island, NY - On August 18th at 6:15 P.M., Battalion-21 transmitted a second-alarm upon arrival for a threeand-a-half story frame structure with fire throughout, located at 228 Ben- JUMP TO FILE# zinger Ave. Several 081916101 minutes later, the fire extended over to a similar structure, located in Exposure-4. Division-8 then reported that the fire had also extended into Exposure-2. At 6:42 P.M., Division-8 reported four lines were stretched out, as well as

a deck gun. Exposures two and four had partial collapses and companies switched to an exterior operation.

A third, fourth and then fifth alarm were transmitted within the hour. Chief of Department James Leonard in Car-3 reported five lines were stretched out, with two tower ladders, one stang and a multi-versal, with a total of five buildings involved. A sixth-alarm was eventually transmitted for relief purposes.

Bronx All-Hand Dwelling Fire Quickly Extinguished Bronx, NY - On August 11th at approximately 2:00 A.M., Bronx Fire Alarm dispatchers started to receive multiple calls reporting a fire in a private dwelling, located at East 202nd Street and Briggs Avenue.

Numerous other calls were reporting people jumping from the windows of the building. Engine-79 arrived on-scene as first-due and transmitted a 10-75 for a fire on the

JUMP TO FILE #081216113 first-floor of a two-story, brick, private dwelling. The fire quickly extended to the second-floor while multiple lines were stretched and put into operation.

The main body of fire was quickly knocked down, but the fire

extended to the second-floor and the roof area through the walls. The fire on the second-floor and roof area was eventually knocked down, which prevented the fire from extending into Exposure-2, through the cockloft. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 60-minute duration.

All-Hands Shed Fire in Bronx

Bronx, NY - On the morning of Monday, September 5th, Fire Alarm Dispatchers received a call reporting a fire in a private dwelling, located at 4423 Ely Avenue. Dispatchers received numerous calls, all reporting smoke and fire coming from a private dwelling. Battalion-15 arrived on-scene and transmitted a 10-75 for heavy smoke in the rear of a two-and-a-half story, private dwelling. Units found two detached sheds on fire in the rear of the house. Two lines were stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 20 minute duration.

New York, NY - "I'm doing the FDNY 343 Ride for my father, and for everyone who passed away on September 11th. It’s a hard ride. It’s hard on your body, but I just think about what our members went through. They gave up their lives that day, and even today our members are still suffering from 9/11related illnesses. They’re my motivation. I’m honored to be a part of it.” – FDNY Firefighter Josephine Smith, Engine-39, whose father, Firefighter Kevin J. Smith, Hazmat-1, was one of the 343 FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Firefighter Smith is participating in this week’s 343 Ride, in which FDNY members cycle 343 miles, from Montauk, NY to Arlington, Virginia, in honor of the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The ride also raises money that goes directly towards assisting wounded Veterans when they return home from active duty.

New York, NY - Since September 12, 2001, citizens all over Germany have contributed to the “Berlin Helps the USA” campaign, a college scholarship fund initiated by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation/Checkpoint Charlie Stiftung to benefit children whose parents were killed, or whose health was permanently impaired, due to the terrorist attacks 15-years-ago.

To date, the City of Berlin scholarship has been awarded to 22 children of FDNY Firefighters to help pay for their college tuition. JUMP TO FILE #091216164 Foundation, and Ana Schillhaneck, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Berlin and Checkpoint Charlie Foundation Board Member, presented the “Scholarship Bear” (Berlin Buddy Bear) as a gift to the FDNY. The bear is the mascot of the city of Berlin, and was created by a Berlin-based GermanAmerican artist team as a symbol of the scholarship and the deep and lasting bond between the Firefighters of Berlin, and Germany, and New York.

The bear holds the Twin Towers in his left hand, upon which the history of the scholarship and meaning of the bear are printed.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said, “The Berlin Bear will be kept here at our New York City Fire Museum among many historical artifacts that tell the story of the FDNY. This Museum is where children come to learn the history of bravery and courage that has defined our Department, and it’s where visitors from around the world learn how the FDNY has protected life and property in New York City for more than 150 years. It’s a fitting place for this wonderful gift to be displayed, and I have no doubt that there will be many visitors from Germany, and elsewhere, who will see it, and very quickly will understand the true bond of friendship formed 15-years-ago.”

FDNY Firefighter Participates in Seventh-Annual Brooke Jackman Foundation Read-a-Thon New York, NY - “The week around September 11th can be very heavy, and kids can quickly pick up the sadness that the adults carry. The Read-a-Thon is about celebrating Brooke’s life. It highlights the importance of literacy and I get to read a kid’s book about firefighting. It’s a very hopeful experience and a very dedicated organization,” says FDNY Firefighter Daniel Glover, who participated in September 10th's seventh-annual Brooke Jackman Foundation Read-a-Thon at Barnes & Noble in Tribeca.

The kids here have a spark in their eye that keeps me coming back every year. Besides being a Firefighter, I’m also an actor. Educating, performing and reading with the kids feels like a natural way for me to combine my art with my job. I was inspired to become a Firefighter when I worked at the FDNY Fire Zone as a presenter. While there, I

was encouraged to take the FDNY test by two Firefighters who worked with me. One of those Firefighters was Raymond York, who died on September 11th. He wasn’t working in a capacity where he was required to respond to the towers, but from what I hear, no one could stop him. This is the type of job where you don’t just do what’s expected of you.

You do more. His sacrifice cemented my resolve to be a Firefighter. I knew this must be an amazing job. The Read-a-Thon is a great way to honor Brooke’s life and gives us all a ray of hope during a time of tragedy.”

Top Floor Fire in Queens Private House Queens, NY - Units responded to a private house, located as 75th St. and Juniper Valley Road on September 8th, for a reported fire. Upon arrival, the fire was found on the second-floor and crews used four lines to knock it down. An All-Hands was called and one additional engine and two additional trucks were also requested to the scene.

Car Slams into MilkTanker in Queens

Queens, NY - On August 1st, a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice was traveling Westbound on South Road in Jamaica, Queens when it struck an "Elmhurst Dairy" Milk-Tanker that was pulling out from a loading dock, near 155th Street. The "Princeton Street Tigers" Engine-303 and Ladder-126 responded to the scene just before midnight. Upon arrival, they reported that there was no one pinned, but requested the Battalion in. The driver of the Caprice had minor injuries and was evaluated by EMS while the firefighters assisted the NYPD Emergency Services Unit with extricating the vehicle from the tanker.

Manhattan MVA Entraps Driver

Manhattan, NY - On August 4th, FDNY and ESU responded to the scene of a serious accident, located at West 136th St. and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. The accident occurred after the driver of a vehicle struck the back of a flatbed truck, which was carrying pipe to a construction site. It took first responders approximately 15-minutes to free the victim from the driver's seat. The victim was removed and then transported to Harlem Hospital for further evaluation.

Queens, NY - On August 19th, units responded to a cockloft fire, located between Seneca Ave. and Werfield St. An All-Hands was called, bringing in one additional engine and ladder. Two lines were used to knock the fire down.

Basement Fire in Bronx

Bronx, NY - On August 26, 2016 at approximately 11:45 P.M., North Bronx Fire Companies responded to 4011 De Reimer Avenue at Strang Avenue for a reported smoke condition.

Battalion-15 arrived on-scene with first-due units Engine-63 and Ladder-39 to find fire in the basement of a two-story, 20x40 private dwelling. A 10-75 was transmitted and the fire was quickly located and knocked down. The fire was placed under control with an approximate 20 minute duration.
