Manhattan church burns in massive blaze on Easter On May 1st, a spectacular four alarm fire tore through a historic church in Manhattan just hours after services for the Orthodox Easter were held, leaving only the outer walls standing, but only causing several minor injuries.

FDNY units were dispatched at 6:55 p.m. to the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava at 15 W. 25th St. Engine 1 transmitted the 1075 on arrival as flames were visible from the large front doors, and heavy smoke was pushing from across the roof.

A second alarm was immediately called with a request for an additional tower ladder. As companies were still establishing water supplies and Tower Ladder 7 was being set up, flames broke through the large circular stained glass window in the front of the church and was soon extending across W. 25th St. Division 1 transmitted a third alarm within about five minutes of arrival of the first due units while

Flames were soon venting out of the two story tall side windows and breaking through the roof.

Three tower ladders were set up in front of the building, and two more in the rear on W. 26th St. Several multiversals and hand lines were also operating to hold the fire to the original building.

A fourth alarm was called for as the fire began to darken down.

A wide collapse zone was established as the structural stability was in question.

Five people, one civilian and four firefighters were treated for minor injuries.

The cause has yet to be determined, and the fate of the church, built in the 1850’s remains in doubt - BILL TOMPKINS

Second alarm in the Bronx On Saturday, April 30, 2016 at approximately 6:20 p.m., Bronx Companies turned out to 2736 University Avenue at West 195 Street for a reported fire in a private dwelling.

Due to the amount of phone calls, the Bronx Fire Alarm dispatchers received, they "loaded up the box" adding a fourth engine, FAST truck, Rescue 3 and Squad 61 to the initial assignment.

Engine 81 arrived on scene first due and transmitted a 10-75 for heavy fire on the first and second floors of a two and a half story private dwelling.

JUMP TO FILE #050216100 Multiple lines were stretched and put into operation. The heavy fire on the first floor was quickly knocked down while the fire on the second floor extended to the attic.

Companies made an aggressive push and eventually knocked down the rest of the fire.

The fire was placed under control with an approximate two hour duration.

All hands in the Bronx

Fire in two story warehouse On Thursday, May 5, 2016 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Bronx companies turned out to 414 East 203 Street at Webster Avenue for a reported building fire. Engine 79 arrived on scene first due and transmitted a 10-75 for fire in a two story warehouse. Two lines were stretched and put into operation. The fire was quickly located and knocked down. The 7th Division used all hands including an additional engine and truck. The incident was placed under control with an approximate 30 minute duration.

On the early morning hours of Sunday, April 17, 2016, Bronx companies turned out to 1080 Anderson Avenue at West 166th Street for a reported smoke condition on the second floor.

Battalion 17 ar- JUMP TO FILE rived on scene be- #041816105 hind the first due companies Engine 68 and Ladder 49.

Battalion 17 transmitted a 10-75 for a fire on the second floor of a six story 150x120 multiple dwelling.

All hands went to work while an additional engine and truck were requested.

Two lines were stretched and the second line was not put into operation.

The main body of fire was quickly knocked down and the fire was placed under control with 30 minute duration.

Small job in Queens On April 21, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to 63 Drive and Booth Street in Queens for fire in the attic of a house. The house was found to be under construction. The blaze was quickly knocked down by the first units on scene with one hose line.

All hands in Woodside

On May 4, 2016, FDNY firefighters were dispatched to 69 Street and 41 Avenue in Queens for a structure fire. Crews arrived to find fire in a private house on the first floor. Extension was found to the second floor and attic with minor extension to exposure two. An additional engine and two additional trucks were needed above the all hands. Four hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

Large taxpayer in Jackson Heights

On March 7, 2016, FDNY firefighters were dispatched to 84 Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Queens for fire in a large taxpayer. Heavy smoke was found in four of the ten stores and crews had a tough time determining the origin. Four hose lines were used and firefighters made a quick stop after locating the fire. No further extension was found.

Squad Company 61 temporarily relocated to quarters of Engine Company 97 due to renovations being done at Squad 61's quarters.

FDNY probationary firefighters march between drills on Randall's Island, in March. Over 300 "probies" are being trained to become New York's Bravest. Graduation is set for May.

Vacant building collapse in Bed Sty On March 10, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to Myrtle and Marcy Avenues in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn for a building collapse. Crews arrived to find the collapse in the rear of the building. All hands were needed with many special units. Personnel and search dogs searched and found no victims.

Fire in two brick commercial

On April 30, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to Ralph Avenue and McDonough Street in Brooklyn for a structure fire. Crews arrived to find fire on the first floor of a two brick commercial.

No extension was found to the second floor. One hose line was used to extinguish the fire.

Five pets pulled from fire in Queens On April 29, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to 69 Avenue and Onderdonk Avenue in Queens for fire in a three brick mixed dwelling. Crews found fire on the first floor in the rear and were quickly able to knock it down. One hose line was used to extinguish the blaze. Five pets were worked on by FDNY crews. One cat and one dog were revived at the scene and were taken to a vet for further treatment.

Second alarm Bronx brush fire On Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at approximately 12:30 p.m., Bronx companies turned out to Box 3976 at Katonah Avenue and Van Courtlandt Park East for a reported fire inside Van Courtlandt Park. Battalion 15 arrived on scene and put all hands to work for a large area of brush burning in a deep seated area. Multiple lines were stretched and put into operation. A second alarm was transmitted for manpower, sending another four engines and two trucks to the scene. The fire was eventually knocked down and the incident was placed under control with an approximate two hour duration.

Fire in Brooklyn private house On April 20, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to Belmont and Autumn Avenues in Brooklyn for a fire in a private house.

Fire was found in the rear on the second floor with extension to the cockloft. Extension was found to Exposure four. Three hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

Two buildings burn in Brooklyn

On May 2, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to Dooley Street and Voorhees Avenue in Brooklyn for a structure fire. Crews arrived to find fire in three story frame with fire on the first floor in a store. Extension was found to the second and third floors as well as the cockloft and exposure two. Three tower ladders as well as four hose lines were used to extinguish the fire. The cause of the blaze is under investigation by local officials.

Brooklyn Brownstone goes to four alarms On April 19, 2016, firefighters responded to Hancock Street and Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn for fire in a shaft on the first floor with extension to the second, third, and fourth floors as well as the cockloft. Exposure was also found in Exposures two and four. Extensive truck work and seven hose lines were used to extinguish the fire. Six people had minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

On March 25, 1911, there was a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on Green Street and Washington Place. No one knows to this day how the fire started. The exit doors were blocked and employees could not escape. In a strange twist of fate, a lot of the girls died just like they did on September 11, 2001. They had no choice but to jump from the tenth and eleventh floors. Some died because the fire escape collapsed. 146 died on this day. To this day, it is still considered the worse industrial tragedy in New York City. It has now been 105 years. In another twist of fate, on March 25, 1990, there was another tragedy called the Happy Land Night Club fire. This was caused by arson and 97 people perished. The killer is still in jail serving a life sentence.

Two alarms needed for large brush and rubbish fire in cemetery On April 18, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to 69 Street and Metropolitan Avenue in Queens for a fire. Crews arrived to find a large brush and rubbish fire in a cemetery. Units had to walk through using hand tools along with one tower ladders and four hose lines to extinguish the fire. The cause is under investigation.

Basement fire in Bushwick

On April 11, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to Wilson Avenue and Cornelia Street for fire in a three brick MD. They arrived to find fire in the basement. An additional engine and truck were needed above the all hands. Two hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.

Two private homes in Queens On April 19, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to 48 Avenue and 60 Street in Queens for in the rear of a private home. Fire was found on the first floor rear with extension to the second floor. Minor extension was found in Exposure 2. Four hose lines were used to extinguish the fire.
