Lisa Deck’s Story

Stroke Survivor, Age 38, N. Attleborough, MA A week before her college graduation, a severe headache and numbness in her left arm sent Lisa Deck to the hospital. She never dreamed she could be having a stroke.

At first neither did doctors. They told the 21-year-old that it was a migraine. They gave her the name of a neurologist to see if her symptoms didn’t improve in a few days.

As days passed, things got worse. Lights seemed too bright and sounds seemed too loud. Her left side went numb. Her head ached.

She took herself to the hospital—the one where the neurologist worked.

While in the waiting area of the emergency room, she noticed the American Stroke Association’s poster for Stroke Awareness month.

It listed the stroke warning signs—and Lisa realized she was experiencing all of them.

“I thought, ‘Wow, that’s crazy, that can’t be what’s happening to me,” Lisa said. “I thought stroke was something that happened to old men and killed you when it happened.”

A series of tests showed Lisa had indeed experienced an ischemic (blockage-caused) stroke, but doctors couldn’t determine a cause.

She underwent occupational therapy to regain lost function in her left hand. Every few weeks she visited the doctor for more testing.

Knowing she’d survived a stroke emboldened Lisa to live life to the fullest that summer. She spent quality time with family and friends, traveled, attended concerts, visited the beach and took thrill rides on roller coasters.

“I did everything I could,” she said. “I wanted to live for the moment.”

After taking the summer off, Lisa began her first job in the fall of 1997. She worked as a consultant, putting her degree in business to use.

She’d completed her six weeks of training and was on her first assignment with a client when she began having stroke symptoms again. She called her neurologist, who told her to go to the hospital immediately.

Lisa was hospitalized and had two weeks of intensive testing and medication trials before being diagnosed. She had a rare brain disease called central nervous system vasculitis. It causes inflammation in the walls of the blood vessels in the brain, leading to her stroke.

Treatment took four years and combined intense chemotherapy, steroids and blood thinners. It was rough, and so were the side effects: depression, high blood pressure, hair loss, decreased bone density and a 70-pound weight gain. For the first two-and-a-half years she kept working, struggling to maintain the career she’d strived for.

“It made me feel as normal as I could as a 20-something,” Lisa said. “I was determined. It was my first real job and I wanted to give it my all.”

Lisa survived a third stroke in 2000 as doctors were tapering her medication, but she’s been in remission since 2001.

Lisa, is now 38, married with two children, and lives in North Attleboro, Mass. She still can have numbness on her left side, especially during times when she’s over-tired or stressed. She also gets fatigued easily and occasionally has difficulty finding words readily, another effect of her strokes. She’s never been able to return to work.

Once her disease was in remission, Lisa got involved in the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. To improve her health, she started with the “Train To End Stroke” program, which culminated in a half marathon.

Since then, she’s become an active volunteer in the AHA’s advocacy program, sharing her story with lawmakers and advocating for heart health issues. She also organized a survivor luncheon in conjunction with the AHA’s National Lobby Day to provide an opportunity for survivors to connect.

Given her experience, Lisa urges people to learn to recognize the signs of a stroke, no matter their age.

“The faster you get help,” she said, “the better your outcome will be.”

She also encourages survivors to live life to the fullest.

“Don’t let a major health catastrophe ruin your life,” she said. “It was hard to go through, but it has helped me appreciate the small moments in life and focus on what I have and how precious life is.”

Rhonda Hall’s Story Diabetes Survivor, Age 44, Springfield, MA

Rhonda Hall knew she needed to lose weight but didn’t. For her to make the lifestyle changes she needed, it took a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, the expense of medications and supplies, and a talk with God. Through diet and exercise, Rhonda lost 100 pounds. She reduced her medication, stopped needing insulin shots and no longer has sleep apnea (breathing that temporarily stops during sleep).

“My family experience was that if you got diabetes or heart disease, there’s nothing you can do about it,” she said. “The reality was that I was able to change it. With healthy lifestyle changes, you can live a long, healthy life, even if you have a family history.”

Rhonda, an elementary school teacher from Springfield, Mass., realized something was wrong with her health in 2004. She’d always struggled with her weight, but despite being on a diet plan, she’d suddenly gained 60 lbs. when she was 33. At her annual gynecological exam, her doctor urged her to redouble her efforts to lose weight.

The rapid weight gain wasn’t the only cause for concern. Rhonda’s ankles swelled after taking a trip to visit family. Her doctor said it was common after travel but ran some tests.

When Rhonda got a call first thing the next morning, she knew it meant there was a problem. She was diagnosed with hypothydroidism, a condition in which the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones. If untreated, it can lead to complications including obesity and heart disease. Medication was prescribed.

Nine months later, Rhonda still didn’t feel good. She needed frequent restroom breaks during the school day. This was a problem because another teacher had to cover for her each time.

“I’d been sucking down apple juice but couldn’t quench my thirst,” she said.

Rhonda returned to the doctor.

This time tests showed that in addition to a yeast infection and thrush, she had Type 2 diabetes.

“Suddenly, I had to take four shots a day,” Rhonda said.

Over the next seven years, Rhonda’s health had ups and downs. She didn’t always take her medication as directed because she forgot or couldn’t afford it. Her inconsistency made her problem worse, requiring higher dosages in some cases.

In February 2012, spurred by weight loss competitions at her work and church, Rhonda got more serious about losing weight. Until then her weight had continued to rise.

“It was like a collective echo saying, ‘Let’s get healthy,’” she said.

Working out each morning before work and sticking to a strict diet plan, Rhonda lost nearly 50 pounds in four months. A car accident that prevented her from exercising for a year could have been another setback, but Rhonda stuck to her diet plan and kept losing weight.

By October 2012, she’d lost 100 pounds. By early 2013 her doctor said she no longer needed insulin shots and could reduce her other medications. Her weight loss also helped end her sleep apnea.

Rhonda, now 44, celebrates her accomplishment but is clear about her responsibilities.

“I’m not out of the woods,” she said. “I still need to be monitored by my doctor and be consistent about the lifestyle changes I’ve made.”

Looking back, Rhonda says she was in denial about her risk factors and what they meant for her health. Although she was volunteering with the American Heart Association in her community to raise awareness about heart health, she hadn’t accepted she was also at risk.

“Of all the risk factors, smoking was the only one I didn’t have,” she said. “The American Heart Association really opened my eyes.”

Today, Rhonda continues to volunteer with the AHA and share her story with other women. She encourages them to take responsibility for their health and make sure they get the medical care they need.

“You have to be an advocate for yourself, and be ready to push for more answers if you know something isn’t normal for you.”

Amanda Gonzalez’s Story Congenital Heart Disease Survivor, Age 26, Worcester, MA

Over the last eight years, Amanda Gonzalez has learned a lot about what her body can take. She’ll still face periodic surgeries throughout her life to keep her heart beating regularly. Even so, the 26-year-old is focusing on her future—and getting the word out about heart health.

When she was 18, Amanda learned that she had an irregular heart rhythm that required an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). She was nearly paralyzed with anxiety.

Amanda’s heart story began in her final days as a high school senior. She’d come home from a softball game and studied for finals late into the night. She closed her books and decided to shower in her family’s clawfoot tub. Tired from the game, she sat washing her arms when she suddenly felt dizzy and passed out. She fell back, knocking over shampoo bottles.

Hearing the clamor, her mom came to the door and asked what was wrong. No answer. Amanda’s brother pried open the bathroom lock. Amanda was unconscious, foaming at the mouth, without a strong pulse. Immediately her mom called 9-1-1.

As Amanda awoke, her vision was blurry; it was hard to make out her mother’s face. Barely able to move her tongue, struggled to ask her father “What happened?” as he cradled her cheeks in the palms of his hands.

Nervously, he explained she must have slipped and hit her head.

By the time the paramedics arrived, Amanda could see clearly and talk. She was taken to the hospital and underwent a series of tests. They found no cause for the episode.

Three months later, when Amanda was referred to a cardiologist and electrophysiologist and began wearing a Holter monitor, her issue was revealed. Her heart was beating irregularly.

Amanda learned she needed immediate surgery to implant an ICD. She was devastated.

“All I could think about at the time was moving into college as a freshman in three days,” she said, “but I was being told I could die if I had another episode and didn’t have an ICD implanted immediately.”

Looking back, Amanda says there had been signs something wasn’t normal with her heart. While playing softball as a senior, she’d had a hard time keeping up with her teammates when they’d run during practice. Amanda had thought her lagging behind was because she was inexperienced and hadn’t trained as hard beforehand.

During practice one day, an ambulance was called after she became over-heated and began hyperventilating.

At the time, she was told it was likely due to dehydration.

After getting her ICD, Amanda was nervous about the possibility of getting a life-saving shock if her heart beat out of rhythm. Less than two months after her surgery, it happened. She was in her dorm room and she got two shocks.

Over the next three months, Amanda’s ICD went off seven more times. She was filled with paranoia and her family concerned. A procedure called a cardiac ablation was done to remove tissue near her heart vessels. The goal was to prevent the large number of premature ventricular contractions that were triggering potentially fatal heart rhythms. Unfortunately, it wasn’t effective.

Still struggling to breathe from palpitations and anxiety, Amanda took a medical leave from school. Her family was perplexed about what was causing her heart to beat out of rhythm so often. A chance meeting led the family to a new doctor. He implanted a wire to pace her heart’s top chambers and prescribed a new regimen of medication.

For Amanda, the anxiety was debilitating. For a year, she didn’t drive. She even got nervous climbing stairs and hills on her college campus when she returned for the fall semester.

After many sessions of cardiac rehab and a year’s work with a behavioral psychologist, Amanda got the green light to return to normal life. She was given no restrictions but no guarantee that ICD wouldn’t still shock her in the future.

Amanda’s ICD hasn’t gone off since January 2007, but she still thinks about it, especially during daily symptoms.

Working with a behavioral psychologist helped her cope with the trauma of nine episodes and shocks. She’s learned to have power over her anxiety.

Amanda graduated from college in May 2011, a semester later than her classmates, with a degree in visual arts. The occasion was a chance for Amanda to celebrate her achievement amid her health struggles.

She’s now a photographer.

“I was able to put heart disease to the side,” she said.

“I was finally able to focus on my college career and move on with my life.”

Amanda wants women to know that heart disease isn’t limited to those over 65— that it can affect you at any age.

She’s been volunteering for the American Heart Association and sharing her story. She uses social media as a way to raise awareness about heart disease and how to recognize symptoms before a medical emergency.

She also focuses on keeping her heart as healthy as possible. She has a family history of heart disease and wants to do whatever she can to prevent future problems.

“People would always tell me, ‘You’re too young to have heart disease,’ but it can affect you at any age, especially if it’s in your family history,” Amanda said.

“One year prior to my cardiac event, my grandfather died of a heart attack in my home.

Heart disease snuck up on me during the best time of my life. It’s never too early to check your heart health, so don’t wait until it’s too late!

For a sugar-free Valentine’s Day… If your loved one has diabetes, go easy on the Valentine's Day candy, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists advises.

For the 25.8 million adults in the United States with diabetes, Valentine's Day sweets could cause an unhealthy spike in blood sugar levels, according to the association.

Rather than loading up on sweets, the group's physicians recommend a small package of handmade truffles for diabetics who can safely work a bit of sugar into their diet. Chocolate, they said, is metabolized more slowly than other types of candy and won't increase blood sugar levels as quickly.

Also, by learning about diabetes and thinking ahead, there are other ways you can show your love for someone with diabetes on Valentine's Day, including: Opt for low-carb candy: Candy makers have low-carbohydrate versions of popular Valentine's Day gifts. Still, it's a good idea to limit portion sizes of these candies. Although many are labeled "sugar-free," they have calories that affect blood sugar levels differently.

Be mindful of: hidden carbs: Aside from sugar, ingredients that can cause blood sugar levels to rise quickly include potatoes, white rice and white flour. Just because a baked good is made with a sugar substitute doesn't mean it's an appropriate gift. Desserts that contain white flour, dried fruit, honey, corn syrup and agave nectar are not a good choice for people with diabetes.

What do doctors do to treat their own pain?

As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes—those all-too-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of “conservative” therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result.

Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I havepersonally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath’s outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regimen I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I wasliterally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead.

My visit to Dr. Donath’s office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well.

My own patients and family members have become “believers” in Dr. Donath’s abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.

I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I’m constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year.
