With springtime approaching, you might be gearing up for a trip, whether it be a summer vacation or a visit with the grandchildren across the country.

There are no age limits to travel. At Boomers & Beyond, we hear stories about people in their 90s traveling. They key is to make sure that you can navigate the world of modern travel safely and enjoyably.

Need some tips? Well, you have come to the right place. We wish you fun and safe travels whenever you make your trips(s).

Designate a family member to help with reservations: It’s best if one family member steps up to make travel reservations and coordinate getting the right frequent flyer credit. Thankfully, popular award tracking programs allow users to include the accounts of family members.

Book a non-stop flight if possible and avoid regional jets: When booking a trip, non-stop flights are strongly preferred over connecting flights in order to minimize the chance of a missed connection and to reduce the total travel time. Book a non-stop flight even if it means a higher fare or a longer trip to the airport.

Choose the right disability options: Another important step in the booking process is selecting any necessary disability options. Some airlines, like Southwest, allow passengers to select disability options at the time of booking, while others, such as Delta, require customers to contact the airline by phone to request these options separately.

Travel during the right time of the day: Another piece of advice I heard was that seniors may no longer have the energy they once had, and travel early in the morning or at night can be exhausting. Mid-morning or early afternoon departures seemed to work better.

Consider a cruise: Cruises are one of the few activities that can be enjoyed by children, parents, and seniors at the same time, and many cruise lines offer shore excursions designed for those with limited mobility.

Choose the right line at security: Passengers in wheelchairs (and their companions) can receive priority service from the TSA, much like those with elite status in airline programs. Seniors are sometimes offered the TSA pre-check line even without being part of the program, although that practice has diminished in recent months. Either way, adults over 75 do not have to take off their light jackets or shoes.

Things every grandparent should own Having the grandkids over can be a little daunting sometimes.

What to do with them? There is always cooking or baking together, and yes, there is always television, but having these things on-hand creates instant fun and can be a lifesaver, if you just don’t know what to do.

A classic board game: Whether it’s Hi Ho Cherry-O for younger kids, Operation for elementary age, or Monopoly for elementary age and older, a classic board game is a great way to get kids off of electronics and interacting with you.

A craft box: Markers, paper, stickers, and colored pencils go a long way with kids. Buy a craft box and stock it with whatever you think the kids will like: pom poms, glitter, foam shapes.

A soccer ball: Or a football, baseball, basketball or Frisbee– anything that gets them outside, using their muscles, and running around.

A fuzzy blanket: For chilly days and sleepovers, a blanket that is soft and cuddly can help kids feel safe and secure. Keep the blanket at your house instead of letting them take it home, so they can look forward to using it only when they are with you.

A go-to snack: When the kids are fussy or famished, a snack that’s healthy is a musthave. Ask the parents for suggestions or try these kid-favorites: granola mixed with dried fruit and chocolate chips, peanut butter and sliced apples, hummus and cut up veggies, crackers with bite-size pieces of cheese.

Keep Moving with Arthritis!

Whether it's the arthritic hip stiffness you feel rising from bed each morning and taking your first steps of the day or perhaps the knee ache experienced when climbing stairsit is important you keep moving.

Avoiding movement and not exercising weakens surrounding muscles and tissues- in turn causing more stress to the joint and your bones.

When it comes to arthritis, movement and exercise can help reduce pain, increase your mobility, and improve your joint stability.

You may be thinking right about now, how you could actually keep moving with your arthritis pain? To tolerate everyday physical activity and make exercise with arthritis less challenging, it is vital to prepare your body.

Tips to reduce arthritic pain during exercise and keep moving include: • Stretch daily to minimize stiffness • Perform warm ups and cool downs with every work out • Take your preferred pain medication 20-30 minutes prior to exercising • Use a heating pad before working out and ice afterward • Keep a healthy weight to decrease the load on your joints • Incorporate exercises that reduce weight on your joints to your work out regimen. For example swimming/water aerobics, recumbent bike, and elliptical machine.

Now that you've finally planned your garden to perfection, it's time to think about how much time and effort you want to put into it. While avid gardeners may want to spend all day with their sprouts, a low-maintenance plot can be fulfilling to both greenthumbs and novices alike - especially if you're looking to enjoy the other amenities available at a senior living community in your spare time.

The first step is to find perennials that are hardier and more self-sufficient than other, more delicate flowers. Ferns and native wildflowers are particularly well-suited for this approach. If you choose to plant some shrubs, make sure they have enough room to fully grow - the publication recommends giving each plant eight feet of space.

Scatter some woodchips between the sprouts and then layer the areas with mulch.

The news source states that mulch can also be used as a way to prevent weed growth around trees.

Once the shrubs have started to flourish, gardeners should plant bulbs that flower in the spring or fall to bring a nice pop of color in their plot!

Waveny LifeCare Network celebrates with hundreds of volunteers Waveny LifeCare Network recently recognized its many volunteers for their unique contributions of time and talent throughout the Network, including Waveny Care Center, The Village, the Adult Day Program and The Inn. More than 200 volunteers gathered together on ‘Main Street’ at The Village in celebration and recognition of their service to Waveny throughout the year. “As I look around this room I see a diverse group of individuals who have made a decision to serve,” said Rebecca Albrecht, Director of Human Resources for Waveny. “I see hearts larger than life. I see individuals rich with soul.”

More than 80 active Waveny volunteers were recognized for service-hour milestones ranging from 50 to 5,500 hours.

In addition to recognizing hours of service, 13 loyal volunteers received awards commemorating their anniversaries of 5, 10, 15, and 20, 35 and 40 years of service at Waveny.

A special honor was given to Waveny’s longest-serving volunteer, Fiz Tomaselli, for marking four decades of service as Waveny celebrated its 40th anniversary on April 22.

Specially recognized for their volunteer service in beautifying Waveny were the New Canaan Garden Club, the Beautification League, The Gardeners, the PEO group, the Tuesday Ladies, New Canaan Florist Garden & Gifts, and the Stamford Garden Club. Also recognized were the New Canaan Jewish Women’s Group, former members of RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program),

Waveny’s Pet Therapy volunteers, and the Healing Touch Volunteers who apply Reiki principles and energy work to enhance the well-being of Waveny’s residents.

“Being connected makes us feel purposeful in our world and service brings with it a deep sense of connection,” said Debbie Perron, Director of Volunteers for Waveny. “Waveny becomes our extended family and there is no better feeling than when a resident asks ‘when are you coming back dear?’ You are all living proof of what happiness research reveals: That close relationships and service boost our well-being.” Over 500 individual volunteers collectively donate more than 15,000 hours of service to Waveny each year, with nearly 200 new volunteers joining Waveny over the past year alone.

The awards ceremony marked the mid-point of a week-long celebration in honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, which was themed “Volunteers: A Work of Heart.” “Waveny was built by the community to serve the community,” said Bill Piper, Waveny CEO. “All of you are a major support to that mission. We thank you for everything you do to make Waveny the special place it is and a jewel in the town of New Canaan.”

Comfort, Care and Healing In each of the 12 private suites, sunlight streams through French doors that open to a patio overlooking acres of woods and gardens. A few feet away, families can heat a loved one’s favorite meal in a fully equipped kitchen.

Down the hall is a cozy dining room with a professional chef to cook for family and friends.

There’s a chapel for quiet meditation and a library for reading or catching up on business. There is also a spa with a specially designed comfort tub; a hair salon, a room for massage therapy.

In fact, every element in the new Regional Hospice and Home Care Center for Comfort Care and Healing, located at 30 Milestone Road in Danbury, was designed for peace, tranquility and spending meaningful time with loved ones approaching the end of life.

On Monday, January 26 at 10 a.m., Regional Hospice and Home Care officially “cut the ribbon” on the new state-of-the-art facility -- Connecticut’s first and only nonprofit, family focused, all-private-suite hospice center -surrounded by approximately 200 major donors, political supporters and others who helped bring a new era in end-of-life care to the people of Connecticut.

Throughout the week, a series of Open Houses showcased the new Center to other groups that helped bring it to reality, including donors, volunteers, corporations, foundations, and case managers, as well as other interested parties.

More than 1,000 patients, many of them children, are expected to come to the 36,000square-foot hospice center during the first year. The 12 pet-friendly private suites, each with views of the gardens and grounds, “were designed to look and feel like a home, not an institution,” said Cynthia E. Roy, MS, LCSW, CHA, president and CEO of Regional Hospice.

Everything from the cozy, home-like Ethan Allen furniture to the serene paint colors evokes a sense of peace. Paintings on the walls behind beds were designed to hide medical equipment. Beds can wheel anywhere in the Center: the patios, outside, wherever patients might want to go. Indeed, the hospice’s leadership designed the Center to fill the gap for those who would like to experience hospice care outside of a hospital setting but for a variety of reasons are not able to spend their final days in their own homes.

“From the years I have worked in hospice care, I know that being responsible for a loved one’s care at the end of life can be emotionally and physically draining.

Sometimes, a patient would rather be in a setting where a loved one is not responsible for all of their care needs but can instead focus on spending quality time with each other,” explained Deborah Ryan MSW, LCSW, ACHP-SW, vice president of clinical operations at Regional Hospice. “Many times, pain or other symptoms can be managed most effectively at the hospice Center. And sometimes, when the patient is a young parent or a child, the family may choose to have care provided at the Center while still being able to be there together. Families frequently prefer that the bereaved children not have memories of the death occurring in the home.”

The Center for Comfort Care and Healing offers a patient suite designed specifically to care for a sick child, where a family can stay 24 hours a day, so Mom and Dad can be just that -- Mom and Dad -- while specially trained hospice nurses and nursing assistants provide round-the-clock care. The Center’s hospice- and palliative-care trained medical director, physicians and APRN’s are available 24/7. In addition to

nursing and palliative care, the team provides emotional, spiritual and volunteer support, including the alternative modalities of massage, therapeutic touch, music and pet partners.

The construction of the Center came after nearly seven years of work by Regional Hospice and other advocates in end-of-life care to modernize hospice legislation in the state of Connecticut.

In addition, “Regional Hospice will continue to serve patients with hospice, palliative and comfort care in their own homes, nursing homes, assisted living homes, group homes and hospitals, as it has done for more than 30 years,” she said. “The new Center is an additional option for those who seek it.”

Gov. M. Jodi Rell are among those who supported the changes in legislation, which passed unanimously in the Legislature’s Regulations Review Committee in 2012. After the changes were then passed in the Connecticut State House and Senate, Governor Malloy signed the bill into law.

Roy said she expects patients will come to the new hospice center from a 50-mile radius surrounding Danbury, including Connecticut and Westchester/Putnam counties in New York.

Many Healing Hearts participants are children who have lost parents or other loved ones, so the Center’s child-friendly atmosphere includes a children’s activity room.

Outside, in the memorial garden, the Healing Hearts Playground offers a custom-designed playscape where youngsters can benefit from sunshine and exercise.
