February 25th was a day for world travelers in Waveny LifeCare Network’s Adult Day Program!

From touring the world’s most famous taverns and saloons, to exploring musical culture worldwide, an entire day of programming and activities was devoted to globetrotting. For lunch, participants stopped for a “layover” in Italy and dined at their very own Italian Bistro. Afterward, travel paths diverged with choices between adventuring through Europe or exploring the colorful Caribbean through a personalized calypso spa experience.

An apple a day can keep Alzheimer’s away Of course, you have heard the slogan: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

As it turns out, the fruit could have even more health benefits for seniors.

While researchers are working hard to battle Alzheimer’s disease, there are things you can do to keep the brain healthy, like eating a balanced diet that includes one fruit in particular: Apples.

Not only are they delicious, but apples contribute to greater bone health, cholesterol depletion, and Alzheimer’s prevention.

A study at Cornell University found a chemical called quercetin protected rat brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

When shopping for apples, try to choose locally grown organic apples to avoid any pesticides that may be present. According to an analysis done by the Environmental Working Group, pesticides showed up on 98 percent of more than 700 apple samples tested, even after being washed.

Apples are commonly sprayed with Syngenta Paraquat, a pesticide under scrutiny for a possible link Parkinson’s disease.

Research suggests that three popular trends to help minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s are diet, physical health and fitness, and companionship. So what should you do? Invite your loved ones over for a fun night of cooking and have a friendly stroll around the neighborhood afterwards.

Three strategies for building your self-esteem Confidence is an important part of living a happy life and maintaining productive relationships.

But there could be even more benefits to having a positive sense of self-worth. According to studies, a happy, healthy outlook can stave off some of the negative effects of aging.

Here are three tips for cultivating healthier levels of self-esteem.

Seek out social connection: Regardless of age, individuals who have supportive, loving relationships with friends and family consistently report higher self-esteem and overall happiness.

Promote feelings of independence: One possible cause for self-esteem dips in aging adults is the loss of independence due to physical and cognitive decline. This is played out in the conflicts created by conversations of whether an elderly loved one should still be driving, or if they can still safely live on their own.

Cope with life changes by finding support: We are social creatures by nature, and we connect with each other by telling stories and sharing experiences.

Communities and groups aimed at supporting members through various life transitions—from becoming an empty-nester to dealing with a loved one's death—are good resources for handling these events in a healthy way.

It’s almost springtime. The weather will be nice, the plants in bloom and you finally have the chance to enjoy the great outdoors. Getting out in the sun can not only be a relaxing way to spend the day, it can also be healthier than sitting inside watching Judge Judy.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not use the weather to your advantage and start a garden? You can choose to do it alone or if you live in an independent living community, get a group of friends together to help.

Boomers and Beyond recommends starting out by deciding what you want to plant - flowers, vegetables or a little bit of everything? Some community gardens are split into specific plots to keep things organized.

When you choose a piece of land, look for one that gets about six to eight hours of sunlight every day. Don’t forget the technical details, either - from installing sprinkler systems to protecting the plants from pests, security is an important part to any garden, because otherwise you risk having all your bulbs eaten before they get a chance to sprout.

Retirement hobbies and activities that keep you young and healthy The twilight years after retirement used to mean a brief decade before the inevitable happened.

How does the old saying go about death and taxes?

Today, things are much different: With advances in healthcare, people can reasonably expect to live another third of their life after retirement. If you retire early and live a long life, you may need to reinvent yourself. Hobbies take on a new meaning when you are going to do them for one, two, or maybe even three or four. Creating an active lifestyle is the new version of the fountain of youth.

Department of Education publishes its list of education subject expert shortages throughout the nation.

Mathematics, music, science, and vocational arts all can be found on the list. In some areas the shortage is so critical that schools are offering fast-track certification for specialists.

Not only are you doing a service to your community, but you are bringing in a paycheck and keeping your mind strong and healthy.

Feel the burn Any exercise is good exercise, but research suggests that heavy strength training can make your twilight years even healthier. As we age, we lose bone and muscle mass. This is the reason that older adults fall frequently and sustain more damage when they do. Weight training, lifting heavy weights under the supervision of a trainer, can return muscle mass to core areas and increase bone strength.

Dance, dance, dance!

Many organizations for seniors offer free or inexpensive dance classes. You can learn ballroom, jazz, and even hip-hop.

This is more than a fun activity. Research shows that taking dance classes once or twice a week significantly improves late life functions and core muscular strength. There is something special about dancing as a couple. It serves as a romantic, sensual bonding moment and it is also good for your aging self-esteem to be able to go to a party and cut up the rug like no one else.

Share Your Knowledge Many of us have too much experience to stay at home and let it go to waste. Whether at a high-school, college, or vocational level, teaching is a hobby that can easily turn into a second career. The U.S.
