Leaders, dignitaries and supporters come together for “Then and Now” exhibit launch Burke Rehabilitation Center, the only acute rehabilitation hospital in White Plains, NY, officially kicked off a year-long celebration to commemorate its 100 years of pioneering rehabilitation with a ribbon cutting of its Burke Centennial Lobby Exhibit on January 22. The lobby exhibit’s “Then and Now” theme features numerous vignettes highlighting Burke’s past, present, and future.

The exhibit, which is in Burke’s Wood Pavilion is open to the public through the end of the year.

Visitors can view cherished artifacts and relics dating back to Burke’s inception 100 years ago, such as a hand-printed original blueprint of Burke’s Billings Building by renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and a turn-of-the-century pocket watch owned by John Masterson Burke, the hospital’s founder. The exhibit also highlights new innovations in rehabilitation technology, including a prosthetic arm produced by a 3D printer, interactive demos with a photon microscope, and a Vital Health Connect digital patch that monitors and wirelessly transmits patients’ vital signs to health care providers.

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett, Legislator Ben Boykin and a number of key figures and local dignitaries attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Dignitaries were joined

by Burke leaders and supporters, including Burke CEO and Executive Director Mary Beth Walsh, M.D. and Burke Medical Research Institute Executive Director Raj Ratan, M.D., Ph.D., who provided opening remarks and participated in the ribboncutting ceremony.

“We welcome the community to join us in celebrating our centennial year,” said Walsh.

“We take great pride in our history in medical rehabilitation and look forward to helping move rehabilitation forward for many years to come.”

Retirement hobbies and activities that keep you young and healthy The twilight years after retirement used to mean a brief decade before the inevitable happened.

How does the old saying go about death and taxes?

Today, things are much different: With advances in healthcare, people can reasonably expect to live another third of their life after retirement. If you retire early and live a long life, you may need to reinvent yourself. Hobbies take on a new meaning when you are going to do them for one, two, or maybe even three or four. Creating an active lifestyle is the new version of the fountain of youth.

Department of Education publishes its list of education subject expert shortages throughout the nation.

Mathematics, music, science, and vocational arts all can be found on the list. In some areas the shortage is so critical that schools are offering fast-track certification for specialists.

Not only are you doing a service to your community, but you are bringing in a paycheck and keeping your mind strong and healthy.

Feel the burn Any exercise is good exercise, but research suggests that heavy strength training can make your twilight years even healthier. As we age, we lose bone and muscle mass. This is the reason that older adults fall frequently and sustain more damage when they do. Weight training, lifting heavy weights under the supervision of a trainer, can return muscle mass to core areas and increase bone strength.

Dance, dance, dance!

Many organizations for seniors offer free or inexpensive dance classes. You can learn ballroom, jazz, and even hip-hop.

This is more than a fun activity. Research shows that taking dance classes once or twice a week significantly improves late life functions and core muscular strength. There is something special about dancing as a couple. It serves as a romantic, sensual bonding moment and it is also good for your aging self-esteem to be able to go to a party and cut up the rug like no one else.

Alliance Homecare Treats and cares for clients like family

Gregory Solometo had a great job, working at the former global financial firm Lehman Brothers, making a living in the spectacular city that is Tokyo.

But in 2002 he left Tokyo to come back stateside.

How could he?

Actually, how could Solometo not?

Back home in Rockland County, Solometo’s beloved grandmother, Val Cerny, needed him. Cerny was 84years-old at the time and living alone in her house as her network of friends and community faded away.

Unfortunately, this is a sadly common story for any widow in their 80s.

Mrs. Cerny and her late husband, Raymond, practically raised Gregory.

Raymond succumbed to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 1991.

Solometo returned to care for his grandmother for five years. She was a native of a small town in Nebraska who moved to Rockland County after World War II. At this point, Gregory was working on Wall Street and living in Manhattan, yet taking care of his grandmother upstate several days per week. During this time, he encountered the stresses, challenges and costs of caring for her, both at home, and in a facility. Val Cerny died in May of 2008 at the age of 90.

Solometo’s journey taking care of his grandmother was the inspiration for starting Alliance Homecare, which currently serves New York City, Long Island and the Northern suburbs in the Lower Hudson Valley. Expansion plans are underway in 2015 to cover Northern New Jersey and Southern Connecticut. Alliance Homecare currently has three offices in the area: Woodbury, Long Island, which serves as its headquarters, midtown Manhattan and West Nyack.

Solometo started Alliance Homecare in 2009 with two of his childhood friends, Michele Teter and Diane Sirakovsky, who are both Registered Nurses. Teter and Sirakovsky both worked at the prestigious New YorkPresbyterian Columbia University Medical Center in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. All three of these individuals actively participated in the home care of Mrs. Cerny until her passing in 2008 and share the same passion for providing unparalleled care at home.

“Our company was founded as a direct result of our experience looking after my grandmother,” Solometo said. “My grandparents made a lot of sacrifices for me during my childhood and when it came time for me to return the favor, there was no hesitation. I’m fortunate to have that life experience and to pass that knowledge and insight on to our clients. The culture of our company is based on the value system they taught me. We take care of patients like they are our own family.”

While researchers are working hard to battle Alzheimer’s disease, there are things you can do to keep the brain healthy, like eating a balanced diet that includes one fruit in particular: Apples.

Not only are they delicious, but apples contribute to greater bone health, cholesterol depletion, and Alzheimer’s prevention.

A study at Cornell University found a chemical called quercetin protected rat brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

When shopping for apples, try to choose locally grown organic apples to avoid any pesticides that may be present. According to an analysis done by the Environmental Working Group, pesticides showed up on 98 percent of more than 700 apple samples tested, even after being washed.

Apples are commonly sprayed with Syngenta Paraquat, a pesticide under scrutiny for a possible link Parkinson’s disease.

Research suggests that three popular trends to help minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s are diet, physical health and fitness, and companionship. So what should you do? Invite your loved ones over for a fun night of cooking and have a friendly stroll around the neighborhood afterwards.
