As they grow older, seniors experience an increasing number of major life changes, including retirement, the loss of loved ones, and physical changes.

But you can handle it – no matter if you are in your 60s, 70s or 80s. And how we handle these changes, as well as regular day-to-day stresses, is the key to aging well. Remember, maintain your sense of purpose and zest for life. People who are socially and emotionally isolated live a shorter life of poorer quality than people who are active in their community do.

With these tips for healthy aging, you can maintain your health, and live with meaning and joy throughout your senior years.

Challenge Yourself Mentally: Exercise your brain by going back to school, participate in elder hostel programs, or take a course. Read, use the Internet, play board games and solve crossword puzzles.

Keep Emotionally Fit: Stay involved with friends, neighbors and your community. Stay connected through volunteer work in your community or at your church or temple. Offer to help out at a local school or hospital.

Stay Physically Fit: Do what you enjoy doing, always consulting with your physician before beginning a new exercise program. Walk, swim, take aqua aerobics classes, bicycle, and lift weights.

Control Incontinence: Take measures to help control incontinence: drink plenty of fluids, use the bathroom before leaving the house or going to bed, lose weight, exercise, avoid caffeine, spicy foods and alcohol.

Drive Safely: As we age, our reflexes get slower. If some driving situations are hard, such as at night, at rush hour, or on highways, avoid these types of conditions.

Like all good drivers, don’t drive under stress or when you’re tired. Keep distractions, such as the radio, to a minimum.

Ward came to the U.S. on July 18, 1922 from Birmingham, England when she was 13. She came to Putnam County via Long Island and has plenty more life in her.

In this edition of Boomers & Beyond, we proudly feature Ward. And it might not be the last you hear from her. There is also something called a supercentenarian – a person who has lived to the age of 110 or more, something only achieved by about one in 1,000 centenarians.

a “partner� who she keeps in touch with and together they make sure they keep up the routines they established while in the program. “It would be terrible to stop doing what we learned in the workshop. This way we keep each other motivated.�

The Living Well program is a series of six workshops. The program

currently in place at Phelps Memorial Hospital is in partnership with Westchester Community College, which coordinates “Livable Communities� programs for the northern region of Westchester County.

Delores Holloman of Ossining, 77, was having trouble with her back. So when she read about the “Living Well Livable Communities Program� for seniors, recently launched at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, she knew right away that she wanted to sign up. “It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in experiencing these back problems. There’s a sense of fear that comes with aging, so sharing my concerns with others was very helpful,� said Miss Holloman. The ‘others’ that Delores is referring to were the 11 participants in a six-week program to help seniors manage their chronic health problems.

The theory behind the program, developed by Stanford University School of Medicine, is that by encouraging seniors to take on more responsibility for managing their health, they can improve the quality of their lives and lower their healthcare costs. The program is funded by New York State’s Office for the Aging through the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS).

The workshops are given by specially trained volunteers who are learning to deal with their own long-term health problems. The trainers provide seniors with strategies to modify their behavior through physical activity and exercise, make changes in their diets and learn techniques to handle pain, frustration and fatigue.

Trainer Erin Maher stated, “A large portion of the program focuses on goal setting and problem solving, which are necessary skills for everyone, regardless of age or health status. I truly learned a lot from hearing the participants' stories and felt very connected to the group.� The seniors also learn how to use medications correctly and improve communications with their families and healthcare providers. “The program helps seniors put life back into their lives,� said Ellen Woods, Program Manager of the Vitality Initiative at Phelps, which promotes health, wellness and aging-in-place for adults and seniors in the community. “The techniques they learn, the knowledge they gain and the support they receive from the group helps them take more control over their circumstances.�

Falls do NOT Have to be a Normal Part of Aging!

According to the New York State Department of Health, falls are the leading cause of injury among New Yorkers over age 65.

Each day 140 older New Yorkers are hospitalized, two older New Yorkers die, and 223 older New Yorkers are seen in emergency departments because of a fall.

Statistics also show that a majority of falls occur in the home.

You do not have to become one of these statistics! The reality is that falls do not have to be a normal part of aging. Falls can be prevented and older adults can live active and productive lives without fear and isolation.

Many aging adults report trouble with mobility, a decline in balance, and/or have experienced a recent fall. For many the belief is: “The more I move, the more likely I am to fall.” As a result these individuals begin to limit their activities and become more sedentary in an effort to stay safe. They stop leaving their homes, and their interaction with the outside world dwindles. This inactivity, history of falls, and fear can actually increase the risk for falls, as well as:

• Have your eyes checked-changes in vision can cause blurriness or double vision. See your eye doctor annually or sooner if you notice changes in your vision.

These normal age related changes can delay reactions that normally help us to maintain balance and prevent falls. Taking multiple medications at the same time and chronic conditions like Parkinson’s, vertigo, diabetic neuropathies also have been associated with an increased fall risk.

Falls can ultimately lead to a host of life-altering injuries that can forever change the course of an older adult’s quality of life.

Along with its life altering effect on mobility and independence, falls also bear financial and emotional repercussions. The aging process also introduces additional fall risks for the older adult such as changes in: Vision Hearing Sensation Mood Balance Strength Flexibility Cognition

So What Can You Do To Reduce Your Risk For Falls?

• Exercise regularly--by introducing a personalized exercise program that focuses on an individual’s balance, walking, coordination, endurance, flexibility, and strength deficits the likelihood for falls can be reduced.

• Improve your home safety-reduce tripping hazards by removing or securing area rugs.

Consider adding grab bars in the bathroom, railings on both sides of stairways, and make sure there is adequate lighting throughout your home including entry ways.

Understanding what puts you at risk for falls is the key to knowing how to reduce your personal risk.

This can be accomplished through a balance and home safety evaluation performed by a physical therapist. The physical therapist can determine your specific physical and environmental fall risk level, provide a personal balance home exercise program, instruct in the use of appropriate assistive devices, and provide home modification recommendations for fall reduction in your home.

The take home message is simple: by introducing positive health behaviors and learning how to reduce the risk for falls you can achieve an improved sense of well-being, and live happier more satisfying life. Don’t wait for a fall to change your life. Be proactive and make fall prevention a priority now! As they say, prevention is the best medicine!

Support for cancer patients and their families come in many forms – from enterprising physicians to nurturing nurses – it’s all about caring on many different levels.

With that in mind, Gilda’s Club Westchester, a leader in support for cancer patients and their families, will bring its services to upper Westchester and Putnam residents through a partnership with the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

Starting in February, Gilda’s Club Westchester at HVHC will offer a support group for people newly diagnosed with cancer. The group called “Living with Cancer,’’ will meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at 1978 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor. This will be followed in March by the start of a second support group for the children of those diagnosed with cancer. “Kid 2 Kid” will offer children ages 5 to 12 a safe, supportive environment to discuss how cancer has affected their lives. The group will meet every third Thursday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. at HVHC’s Cancer Center.

Anne Campbell Maxwell, administrative director of oncology services at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center, said that excellent cancer care means treating the patient as a whole person, providing emotional and social support in addition to medical treatment.

The first Gilda’s Club opened in 1995 in New York City in fulfillment of Actress/Comedien Gilda Radner’s dream to have an informal, welcoming place, like a clubhouse, where people living with cancer, their families and friends, might come together to laugh and cry, exchange information and experiences, find support and pass it on to others. Other clubhouses soon opened around the country, creating 22 clubhouses nationwide.

In July 2009, Gilda’s Club and the Wellness Community joined forces to become the Cancer Support Community.

Today, through a network of over 50 local affiliates, more than 100 satellite locations and on-line resources, they bring the highest quality emotional and social support to millions of people touched by cancer.

On January 29th 2013 County Executive Rob Astorino visited Drum Hill Senior Living Community in Peekskill to present a Proclamation of Achievement to Ms. Jessie M. Ward a long time Resident of Drum Hill.

Ms. Ward celebrated her 104th birthday in October.

Jessie Mary Ward came to The United States at the age of 13, from her native England; she lived in Putnam Valley before coming to Peekskill.

Mr. Astorino Proclaimed January 29th 2013 to be “Jessie Mary Ward Day”.

Joining in the celebration were family and friends to help celebrate this wonderful achievement.

Jessie Mary Ward arrived to Drum Hill Senior Living in May of 2005, but her story begins long before she began living at the renowned facility in Peekskill.

Ward is 105 years old. Talk about a milestone. She has lived some life and here’s to many more years.

Ward came to the U.S. on July 18, 1922 from Birmingham, England when she was 13. She arrived to this country with her mother, Mary Louise Ward, and her brothers, George Frank, Joseph Sidney, and her sister, Kathleen.

Their father, Frank, came to America year’s before in order to find employment and a place for the family to live. Jessie’s younger brother John was the only sibling born in the U.S. and is almost 90years-old. He lives in the U.S.

She, her sister and mother lived most of their early life on Long Island. After Jessie and her sister Kathleen retired from the American Can Company, they built a house at Roaring Brook Lake in Putnam County, where they lived for many years. Jessie was very active at Grace United Methodist Church in Putnam Valley – often volunteering many hours back to her community. She was an avid Bowler well into her 90s.

Jessie Ward now enjoys her time at Drum Hill, which combines the privacy of spacious individual apartments with security and dependable services at an outstanding value. Of course, Drum Hill is happy to have Jessie, and we look forward to many more years with her in our family.

Many of us live far away from our aging parents so it sometimes takes a family get together like Christmas to alert us to their “sudden” need for help with daily activities.

That’s what happened with my mother-in-law who lived in Toronto. We spoke on the phone regularly and she seemed to be coping well. But during a Birthday visit we noticed that her apartment had not been cleaned for a while and that there was almost no food in her cupboards. It had gotten to be “too much trouble to cook” so she was surviving on a diet of fast food.

It was time to get some in-home help.

It’s easy to spot other signs that an individual is having trouble coping. Is there spoiled food in the refrigerator? Is he wearing the same clothes day after day? Is she having trouble remembering to take medications on time?

Declining personal hygiene is another red flag.

As people grow older, one of their first fears is that they will slip or fall while getting in and out of a bathtub or shower, says Lesma Howard-Zepeda, Director of Neighbors Home Care Services in White Plains. “It’s embarrassing to ask for help so many people cope by bathing less often or by giving themselves sponge baths at the sink.”

She said her agency provides Bath-Time Services to address this problem. Home Health Aides can simply help individuals get in and out of the bathtub. They can also assist with bathing and hair washing, provide skin care and help with dressing.

“They’ll even prepare a simple breakfast, tidy the bedroom and bathroom and stay for a chat”, said Howard-Zepeda.

The challenge is convincing elderly parents that accepting help will actually enable them to stay in their homes longer.

Burke helps produce U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Famer

Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains has helped produce a Hall of Famer.

Three-time Paralympic gold medalist Jennifer Johnson has been inducted into the U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Fame. Johnson, a Port Chester resident, did much of her training at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains where she was a member of the Burke Wheelchair Sports Team for many years.

Her induction comes after decades of success on the table tennis circuit including:

“I appreciate all the support, friendship, practices, competition and coaching that I received over the years and everyone who has had a hand in my growth as a player and a person will always be a part of my success,” Johnson said.

Along with her sports accolades, she is a past recipient of the prestigious Burke Award, the highest honor bestowed by the facility and its board of the directors. It is given to those who have demonstrated strength in overcoming a disability; whose efforts have contributed to helping people with disability gain independence; those who have made significant contributions to science that led to a better understanding of physical disability; or for those who have made contributions to the development of rehabilitation.

Johnson continues to be active at Burke, lending her expertise for the table tennis segment of the annual Burke Wheelchair Games and participating in various Burke events throughout the year. Outside of Burke, Johnson helps run the American Wheelchair Table Tennis Association, having been president since 1988.

Physical Clues to Hidden Disease When I received the call from World’s News with Diane Sawyer’s producer John Palacio I was a bit taken back. Mr. Palacio wanted to know the connection between an earlobe crease (ELC) and cardiovascular disease. The crease is literally a line that runs diagonally from the bottom of the ear’s opening to the ear’s lowermost tip. If you have an ELC you have a 68% chance of having some degree of cardiovascular disease; if you are under age 40 your chances are bumped up to an 80% chance! If you’ve got hairy ears and an ELC than your chances might be even higher for having or developing heart disease – no kidding!

World News Tonight also wanted to know what other physical signs on the outer surface of the body can predict disease. I began rattling off dozens and Mr. Palacio requested of me to grant an interview on the show. I happily said, “I’ll do it!”.

The interview took place at my office at Integrated Medicine of Mount Kisco located at 495 E. Main Street in Mount Kisco over a 4 ½ hour period. It also included my assistant nutritionist Mr. Sunny Seward, and Heather Toranto who co-runs Holistic Medical Spa & Laser, our sister company. Both Sunny and Heather posed as body models as I pointed out various visible signs that could predict one’s predisposition, or presence of, a large number of health problems. We were interviewed by ABC World News Tonight reporter Sharyn Alfonsi, one of Diane Sawyer’s top reporters, who asked thoughtful and pointed questions that allowed me to reveal dozens of practical health clues often missed by the average physician.

Off camera Sharyn said to me, “Dr.Wald you are a real-life Health Detective” to which I replied, “Actually, I’m called the Blood Detective” and we laughed.

Below I’ve provided several easily identifiable physical signs that apply to both men and women that could mean disease is present. There are at least 200 different such visual signs that I am aware of and I’m discovering more all the time.

Being able to spot them has given me a diagnostic-edge in

clinical practice – and this skill can benefit you too!

I do admit that it is sometimes strange walking down the street, or going to a family social event, and seeing signs of disease.

Sometimes I can’t help but ask a person with an earlobe crease, “Sir, I hope you don’t mind me asking, but are you aware of having cardiovascular disease in your family”. Most people are momentarily perplexed when I asked such a question, but cannot seem to say, “wow, how did you know that?”.

The combination of paying attention to visual clues as supportive information, along with a careful consultation and laboratory tests, allows for faster and more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for my patients.

It is both gratifying and also sad to me that I sometimes find hidden health problems within moments or days on patients have suffered from for weeks, months or even decades with “hidden health issues”. I’m so glad that World News Tonight

Affordable housing for seniors is hard to come by, especially in Westchester County.

Not anymore. The Westchester Center for Independent & Assisted Living has opened in Yonkers as the first facility in Westchester to offer an Medicaid-funded assisted living model of care to seniors, regardless of their income level. As a participant in the New York State licensed Assisted Living Program (ALP), the Westchester Center will be able to provide ALP services for Medicaid benefit recipients.

Health-related services such as medication assistance and personal care management will be available to residents, all designed to help them maintain independent lives, but with privacy not typically found in a nursing home setting. Previously, this “entry-level” but upscale, Medicaid-eligible long-term care model was unavailable in Westchester County, where the only option for many individuals seeking some assistance in their daily lives was the more intensive care offered in a nursing home.

The property features a number of amenities usually associated with higher-level multifamily dwellings. All residents, regardless of source of income, will have supportive services such as housekeeping and restaurantstyle dining. Other amenities include an in-house movie theater, concierge services, beauty salon, billiard room and scheduled daily entertainment. Private-pay rates for such a facility might run $4,000 to $5,000 a month.

The 104,000-square-foot facility can accommodate 195 residents. The 12-acre hilltop property formerly belonged to the Jewish Guild for the Blind, which operates nursing and assisted living facilities in New York State. Westchester ALP Property LLP bought the property in 2010 for $14 million and did a gut rehab on the structure to create the Westchester Center for Independent & Assisted Living.

The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency provided a variety of financial incentives for the project, including a sales and use tax exemption on construction materials, fixtures and furnishings and a structured property tax agreement.

“Building affordable housing requires a strong partnership between private developers and all levels of government, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, who is also chairman of the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency, tells MHN, but he adds that the climate is tougher than it used to be for such developments. “Moving forward, finding public funding for affordable senior housing will be increasingly difficult, as government must continue to confront tough fiscal choices.”

Added Spano: “Yonkers and the IDA will look to make strategic investments that bring real economic value to our community. One such example is the Westchester Center, a lower-cost housing alternative to nursing homes for Medicaid-eligible seniors that potentially saves taxpayer funds.”

Nine students from six local colleges took part in a think tank to brainstorm fresh and creative ways to end a persistent problem: the isolation of seniors who live in northeast Westchester County because the area has no public transportation and other options are limited.

The students also considered ways to transport homecare and home-health aides from southern Westchester and the Bronx to clients in the northeast region.

“The think tank was a terrific way to harness the brain power of some of our smartest young people to help resolve a crucial issue that Westchester confronts,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “Brainstorming encourages out-of-the-box thinking and spontaneity, which can give us a fresh way to look at situations we’ve considered in the past.”

A brief summary of the report was presented at the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services’ annual Legislative Breakfast and Speak-Out on Jan. 25 at the County Center in White Plains.

DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter said that isolation and loneliness for seniors is a serious issue, which should never be minimized.

“Isolation can lead to depression and all sorts of other problems,” Carpenter said. “Mobility helps seniors remain the vital parts of the community that they should be.

We must have dependable ways for seniors in northeast Westchester to get around.”

The entire project took seven weeks. No tax dollars were involved.

Among other things, the think tank found that: - A car is essential to live in that large region, especially in the sparsely populated four towns of Bedford, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge and North Salem, which were the focus of the initiative.

Businesses and non-profit organizations can now register for booths to be part of the Business Expo at the 45th annual Salute to Seniors on May 1 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains The Salute takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and usually attracts some 2,000 seniors. An even bigger turnout is expected at this year’s Salute, which also includes a health and wellness fair, an arts and crafts fair, live entertainment and special programs.

The Expo offers a marketing opportunity for companies and nonprofit groups to target their products and services to Westchester’s vital and growing senior population. Last year there were 82 Business Expo participants, and they included assisted living centers, hospitals, recreational services, insurance firms, financial service companies and social service agencies.

The corporate rate for a half booth is $400, a single booth is $750, and a double booth is $1,400. The rate for non-profits is $200 for a half booth, $350 for a single and $650 for a double. To be eligible for these rates, deposits must be received by March 29. After that date, the fee increases $50 for the half and single booths and $100 for the double. Full payment is required by April 6.

think tank - Many seniors who live there, however, can no longer drive or do not have a car - As a result, once routine outings have become daily challenges, such as shopping, getting to doctor appointments, to the library to borrow books, to the hair salon for a touch-up or to visit a friend.

- Taxis are available, but they can be expensive. In some cases, it can cost as much as $50 for a ride from the nearest train station to a senior’s home.

- The county’s ParaTransit program provides transportation for disabled residents, and the recreation departments at the local municipalities provide some rides to their residents. But neither meets the growing demand.

Think tank sponsors were the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, DSPS, the Helen Andrus Benedict Foundation and United Way of Westchester and Putnam.

The innovative think tank is a project of the Westchester Alliance of Academic Institutions for Aging Related Studies and Workforce Development. Its 30 members include businesses, not-for-profit organizations, colleges and universities.

Catherine Wynkoop, of Pound Ridge, a Westchester Alliance member, community organizer and consultant on aging issues, was the think tank coordinator. She said the project was successful beyond her expectations.

“The research the team provided will fuel lots of activity over the next couple of years,” Wynkoop said.

The students agreed it was an enjoyable and valuable experience, even if it was daunting at first.

The Westchester Alliance’s goals are to interest people about the many well-paying jobs in the so-called “Silver Industries,” and to encourage institutions of higher education to offer more courses to train people to deal with the challenges the growing number of elderly confront.

The alliance is a program of the Westchester Public/ Private Partnership for Aging Services, which raises funds to supplement programs of the county’s Department of Senior Programs and Services. DSPS’ Colette Phipps is alliance director.
