Ageless Beauty Your face changes with age, but can still remain beautiful.

Let’s face it (no pun intended), we’re all getting older.

However, that doesn’t mean we have to give in to what time does with the face and body. There are a few tricks to keep you looking good - and minimize the signs of aging.

Just as your face and body change as you age, acquiring wrinkles and age spots, so too must your cosmetics regimen. The products you worshipped in your 20s and 30s may no longer do the trick -- after all, how many things from your 20s still do?

Here are some make-up and cosmetic tips from Boomers & Beyond that will make you feel and look great.

Define those eyelashes and brows: When it comes to eyelashes and eyebrows, you may find yourself having to do more with less, as both lashes and brows become thinner with age. Brows should be kept well-defined, because with less hair, the stray ones become easier to notice. Then, use a pencil to provide further definition and to fill in the sparse spots. As for your eyelashes, a good volumizing mascara will plump them up and draw attention to the eye.

Perhaps you're accustomed to using eye shadow and eyeliner to attract attention to the eye, but the mascara will prove to be a more useful tool as you age. Though all skin gets slack and wrinkled with age, this phenomenon is particularly noticeable on the eyelids because the skin is already so thin.

These crepey eyelids make it difficult for older women to wear shimmers or metallics on their eyes -- these products can draw attention to the creases. Similarly, it's best to find an alternative to liquid eyeliner, which also has a tendency to run into eye wrinkles.

Get rid of those circles under your eyes: During the aging process, the already-thin skin below your eyes becomes even thinner, showing the blood vessels below and giving you under-eye circles.

The answer isn't just caking on concealer; too much makeup in this area will look lumped on. Instead, use a light foundation -- lighter than the shade on the rest of your face -- or a on the dark areas under your eyes.

Use powder to blend it in and set it.

Aging causes water retention in the area under eyes, much like a lack of sleep and allergies did in younger days. To avoid highlighting those dark circles with puffy eyes, get plenty of sleep and invest in a tightening eye cream for nights.

Ease up on the foundation: If you're self-conscious about fine lines and wrinkles on your face, you may be tempted to pile on the foundation. Don’t do it! This has the unfortunate effect of highlighting those very features. All that excess makeup builds up in the creases, drawing the eye right to the spot you want to conceal.

To avoid the equivalent of drawing an arrow right to your wrinkles, adopt a "less is more" approach. Moisturizer is always a must because it evens out your skin, but then, it's time to evaluate the light and dark spots on your face. Rather than just applying foundation to the entire face, use concealer first to get rid of shadows and harsh lines and to hide brown spots.

Then, you can set the look with translucent powder all over.

Lighten up those lips: Some professionals think that a lip liner should always be applied before lipstick, so as to give the lip a little more definition. Others find lip liner unnecessary, arguing that such a product will only create a very harsh line that will do your thinning lips no favors.

Regardless of whether you decide lip liner is essential or not, you should reevaluate the kinds of products you're putting on your lips. Lip glosses will have a tendency to slip around now that lips are thinner, and even if you've loved dark shades all your life, it may be time to lighten up. Those darker palettes will only look harsher as you age; going just a few shades lighter will make a huge difference.

Quitting Smoking: For seniors, it’s never too late

If you are like most smokers 50 and older, you probably have tried to quit before. You might think that you will quit someday, or maybe you think that it is too late for you to quit. But it’s never too late to quit.

Quitting has benefits at all ages.

If you have health problems, then many of your symptoms, your quality of life, and your future health will start improving almost immediately if you quit now.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a significant health problem, quitting smoking makes it more likely the treatment will be successful and that you’ll have fewer side effects.

Challenges for Older Adults There are a few reasons why it can be difficult for an older person to quit. You may have tried to quit more than once before, but were not successful. If you weren’t able to quit before, you already know how hard it can be. You may feel too discouraged to try again.

Also, for someone who has been smoking a long time, smoking has become so much a part of everyday life that it is hard to let it go. It may feel like you’re saying goodbye to a friend.

Another reason is that nicotine, the main drug in cigarettes, is very addictive, and this makes it very

hard for a smoker to quit. One of the biggest challenges that most smokers face for the first couple of weeks after they quit smoking is getting through the withdrawal symptoms.

Reasons Older Smokers Have Quit Many former smokers who are 50 and older say that their main reason for quitting was for their health or due to their doctor’s advice. Another common reason smokers quit is to be in control of their lives and to be free from cigarettes. A lot of former smokers also said that pleasing or helping a loved one was a big part of their decision to quit. These all are good reasons. The most important reasons for quitting are the ones you decide on for yourself.

Life Experience May Help Older adults have strengths that can help them quit. Over their lifetimes, they have had lots of experience accomplishing difficult tasks. At this point in their lives, they are likely to be better prepared to take on the challenge of quitting smoking than when they were younger. They know quitting is tough, and they know it won’t be easy, so once they decide to try again, they may be more willing to work at it to make sure they succeed.

Great apps for tech-savvy seniors, a fast-growing set There is a common misconception that the senior set are not actively using email or are less likely to use technology to communicate.

At least, until your grandmother shows you her new smart phone and, next thing you know, you are planning a FaceTime chat with her. The reality is that seniors are tapping into technology more than ever.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 87 percent of senior citizens use email and search engines, while the Nielsen Company found that checking email was the primary online activity for 88.6 percent of seniors. Social networks are also acquiring more senior users with each passing year. The Pew study demonstrates that internet users aged 74+ have experienced the fastest growth in use of social networking sites, which has quadrupled since 2008.

If you are a tech-savvy senior, you know about apps for your phone, ipad, laptop and desktop computer. Here are some helpful apps for seniors.

The Weather Channel (free) Get the weather report for whichever city you need right now, or every hour, or see what it’s going to look like over the weekend, or over the next 10 days.

Yesterday USA (free) Great Internet radio app that broadcasts “old-time radio shows” all day, every day.

Take it back to yesteryear with the help of today’s technology.

Lumosity (free) Keep your mind sharp with some of the best mind games around, designed by neuroscientists working to enhance memory, attention and other skills.

FlipBoard (free) Connect this app with all of your social media accounts, and connect it with some of the best news and content sites that interest you. Then watch it turn everything into a digital magazine, in which you “flip” the pages and see everything set up like a magazine, including Facebook posts and tweets.

Skype (free) What’s better than just talking with your friends and family over the phone? How about talking to them – and seeing them — on a video conference. You will never be surprised by how much your grandchildren have changed again.

WebMD (free) Use WebMD’s Symptom Checker to help what your potential issues might be, and this app can also work as a handy guide for medical emergencies.

EyeReader ($1.99) Hold your iPhone over a book or some paperwork, and your phone turns into a magnifying glass, with a light to help brighten the text.

Park ‘n’ Forget ($ 0.99) Never forget where you parked your car again! Input what floor you’re on and what aisle or spot, and you’ll never roam the parking garage again. It also has a convenient “Parking Meter” timer, that alerts you when you’re parking meter is about to expire.

HeartWise Blood Pressure Tracker ($ 0.99 to $2.99) Easily record your blood pressure, your resting heart rate and your weight, and you’ll be able to track it on a daily basis and over time.

Healthy Aging At Home

Over the years I have had the distinct pleasure of having worked the many spectrums of Health Care with our “Seasoned Seniors.” I enjoyed both engaging and watching them interact with others in Independent and Assisted Living communities.

These communities have beautiful apartments, are full of activities and have some of the best chefs around; I know because I am still working on going from “fluffy to flat” after having the pleasure for several years. While the communities are beautiful, they may

The vaccines you need at age 50 and older Vaccines are not just for kids. Even adults age 50 and older need to get vaccinated against certain diseases. Always discuss any risk factors or concerns you may have with your physician before getting a vaccine. Here are some guidelines we use for vaccinations, as provided by the CDC (www.cdc.gov): Annual Flu Vaccine: Unless you have had a severe reaction from the flu shot in the past or are allergic to eggs, you should be vaccinated yearly. If you are 50 or older, we don’t recommend the nasal spray vaccine because it hasn’t proven to be especially effective.

Pneumonia Vaccine: Even seniors who are diligent about getting their annual flu shot sometimes forget to get a one-time pneumonia vaccine. Both should be part of the preventive health care plan for adults 65 and older and people 50 and older with certain risk factors.

Resilient midlife adults make more social connections One of the most common questions we receive from our clients today is “How can I leave something to my heirs without completely exhausting my life insurance policy?” “I want to be able to leave something for my grandchildren’s future or family members.”

These questions demonstrate a family member sincerity of leaving a small legacy for the next generation. The patriarchs of these families have the foresight to help the next generation move ahead financially.

Battling stress can be overwhelming and, but you can beat it by, among other things, being resilient.

The most resilient adults in their 40s, 50s and 60s are more likely to cope with stress by being physically active and having strong social connections, compared with those less resilient. The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence and the MIT Age-Lab Resilience in Midlife study looked at life transitions that people in their 40s, 50s and 60s experience and how they remain resilient.

“Resilience is particularly essential in midlife, when we may be adapting to major life changes,” said Jodi Olshevski, gerontologist and executive director of The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence. “We found the most resilient adults have a strong sense of self-efficacy or the belief that they are able to manage through difficult transitions.”

The study explored the concept of resilience, the capacity to positively adjust to difficult life experiences, and was comprised of focus groups, and a survey of adults ages 40 – 69.

Participating in entertainment activities and hobbies is the most common way that all adults in the study cope with stress. However, the most resilient adults are more

likely to participate in physical activity than less resilient adults (70 percent versus 42 percent).

Social connections and support are also common among the most resilient people. Sixty percent of the most resilient adults talk to or spend time with friends as a way to cope with stress, compared with 35 percent of the less resilient individuals.

Ninety-four percent of the most resilient people reported that they are very or somewhat happy, compared with only 32 percent of the less resilient people in the survey.

Thirty-four percent of the most resilient people reported that they are not stressed at all, compared with six percent of the less resilient people in the survey.

The most common types of stress that people in midlife are currently experiencing are related to finances and expenses (53 percent), health of yourself or others (40 percent), and changes related to aging (34 percent).

Overall, people in their 60s reported higher levels of resilience, compared with people in their 40s and 50s. Building resilience over a lifetime is important,” said Olshevski. “Carving out time to take care of yourself by being physically active and socially connected in the midst of life transitions is an important part of building resilience over a lifetime.”

Reduce your risk factors for Osteoarthritis with Physical Therapy The cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. Factors that may increase your risk for OA include: • Age. The older you are more likely OA can affect you. With time and age joints get worn increasing your risk for developing OA • Occupation. The theatrical debut of the Talented Wartburg Puppeteers

At Wartburg’s New Adult Care Center Earlier this summer, the eight Talented Wartburg Puppeteers, a group of sixty-to-eighty year old registrants at the Adult Day Care Center at Wartburg, a senior services provider based in Westchester, NY, put on the performance of their lives.

The seniors regaled their fellow day care registrants, assisted living residents, staff, and family members, with a lively 15-minute, multimedia puppet performance piece called “We Are Family.” During the show, the puppeteers performed with physical gestures, dialogue, and songs using rod puppets they designed and built themselves, interacting with a changing backdrop of animated scenes shown on a large projection screen, such as fish in a stream or the sun coming up.

“There was such pride of accomplishment and such acclaim from their peers. It was incredibly uplifting for them and for me,” said professional theatre artist and puppeteer, Josh Rice, a recent MFA graduate from Sarah Lawrence College, and the creative spark behind the program.

Mr. Rice met weekly with the eight registrants over seven months, helping them to craft their own self-designed, self-built puppets and to name them (Silvermist, Lily, and Albert, for example).

During the weekly sessions, the elderly puppeteers honed their improvisational skills to always be “in the moment” and practiced the art of puppetry with its rhythmic swoops, nods and bobs.

The puppet class is part of a nationally recognized program at Wartburg called Creative Aging, which 500 seniors participate in at the assisted living, memory care, nursing homes and adult day care programs where they express themselves through art, song, theater, poetry and oral histories.

long learning for older adults, and the new puppet program exemplifies this goal,” said David Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg.

Josh Rice had been a professional puppeteer, playwright, director, designer and choreographer based in New York City before he went back to graduate school in 2012. “I’ve always been passionate about puppetry, but realized one day that ‘art for arts sake’ was not enough. I became interested in theater for social change at Sarah Lawrence College.” When he learned about the Creative Aging program at Wartburg, it was a perfect fit for his new artistic direction and he offered to form the puppeteering class.

Janet Petro, a 73 year old Wartburg puppeteer, created her fairy puppet, Silvermist, with wings. She is “crazy about the puppet,” who has a high pitched voice and is a “free spirit who will do anything for a laugh.” Mary Jackson, another elderly puppeteer, named her chalkwhite faced, black eye browed, puppet with an unruly shock of white hair, Albert. “He’s not the most attractive, but every once in a while he combs his hair,” she said.

The puppeteers use these everevolving puppet personalities to act out improvised scenes in their

weekly classes and hone them for performance for an audience of their peers. Before they started the program in November 2013,

none of the Talented Wartburg Puppeteers had used puppets or performed before.

The program has been such a success that next year the number of Talented Wartburg Puppeteers will expand, with programs held in Wartburg’s Memory Care Unit and Nursing Home.

“At first I wasn’t sure how the registrants would react to working with puppets, but after I saw that there was such joy in the class and laughter that after each session the classes grew each week,” said Ann Frey, director of volunteers at Wartburg.

The capstone of this year’s accomplishments for the puppeteers may be their appearance on a segment on PBS’ Visionaries, a documentary program hosted

by Sam Waterston.

However, older adults don’t have to allow their changing vision to affect their lifestyles. Knowing what to expect from your eyes as you age, how to manage any issues that arise and when to seek help from a professional are all important steps in preserving your vision and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Know Your Family Health History Talk to your family about their eye health history. It's important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with a disease or condition since many are inherited. This will help you determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition.

Know Your Risk Factors As you get older, you are at higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions. These include age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. Knowing your risk factors is important because you may be able to lower your risk by changing some behaviors.

Give Your Eyes a Rest If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you can forget to blink your eyes and your eyes can get tired. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.

Wear Protective Eye Wear Wear protective eyewear such as goggles and safety glasses, shields, and eye guards when playing sports or doing activities around the house. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics.

Maintain a Healthy Weight Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes. This increases your risk of developing diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma, which can eventually lead to vision loss.

Eat a Healthy Diet A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, or collard greens can help to keep your eyes healthy and disease free.

There are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.

Wear Sunglasses The best sunglasses are those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Sun exposure is associated with developing cataract and agerelated macular degeneration Avoid Smoking Smoking increases the risk of developing age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataract, and can damage the optic nerve.

Keep Your Hands and Contact Lenses Clean Wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect them as instructed and replace them as appropriate.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Hudson Valley Hospital Center among best in geriatric care Hudson Valley Hospital Center has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as among the top hospitals in the care of older adults.

According to the magazine’s recently released annual report on the nation’s best hospitals, Hudson Valley Hospital Center received a regional ranking in geriatric care. Death rates, patient safety and hospital reputation were a few of the many factors considered. HVHC’s status as a Magnet Hospital for nursing excellence also weighed in the decision. Only 144 hospitals were nationally ranked in a specialty.

The U.S. News & World Report ranking follows the Hospital’s being chosen as only one of four hospitals in New York State to be rated a top notch geriatric “NICHE” hospital by the prestigious NYU College of Nursing.

In March, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) released a list of nine hospitals that achieved Exemplar status for the progress of their nurse-driven programs in raising the level of quality in care of older adult patients.

HVHC was the only hospital in the region to receive this honor.

Exemplar is the highest of four levels of recognition.

The 2014-15 U.S. News & World Report rankings cover nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and span 16 medical specialties from cancer to urology. Just 12 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for best hospitals in 2014-2015 earned a regional ranking.
