HOUSE DESTROYED IN THREE-ALARM FIRE ON COUNTY ROAD 33 IN SOUTH BRISTOL

SOUTH BRISTOL, NY - On Tuesday, July 14th at 7:13 p.m., Richmond and Bristol fire departments were dispatched to a house fire at 6104 County Road 33 in the town of South Bristol. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved two-story structure in a wooded area at the end of an 800-foot driveway.

Citizen Rescuers and First Responders Team Up to Save Missing Rafter on Delaware River SPARROWBUSH, NY – Westfall and Matamoras Fire Departments in Pike County, PA and Battalion 8 Water Rescue Team (Port Jervis, Sparrowbush, Huguenot, Cuddebackville) in Orange County, NY was activated to respond from both sides of the Delaware River on the Fourth of July to rescue subjects in the water from an overturned raft. This call was among several in recent days for assistance on local waterways.

The July 4th overturned raft call for help was received by emergency communications dispatchers at approximately 1:30 p.m. Several individuals, at least one being a non-swimmer without a life jacket, was reported to be in the water. Moments later, the information was updated as the non-swimmer having gone under the water and missing.

Boats and emergency responders were launched from several locations along the river. Rescuers were able to quickly locate and assist two of the subjects to safety.

The distraught individuals reported the third person as still missing.

Fortunately for the missing individual, five local young women spotted him in the water about a

mile down river and were able to rescue him. The five, all wearing proper life jackets, had been enjoying a day of tubing on the river together when they first started noticing rescue boats on the river.

One had called her father, a Port Jervis, NY fireman, to ask what was going on and had been informed about the rescue call and missing rafter. The women therefore immediately realized that this could be the individual they were seeing in the water.

The five tubers, Anna, Ciara, Jenna, Madison, and Reagan, paddled to the subject, formed a tube circle around him, and helped him securely hold on to their tubes for delivery back to shore.

Officials and locals who know the stretch of the river near Cherry Island where the raft overturned, say any change in the timing and circumstances of this incident, even split seconds or inches in location, could have resulted in a tragically different outcome. The Delaware River, while it may look calm and

That photographer is a photojournalist and New York City native. As the story goes, he was walking home from his parents apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan one day in 2024 when he came upon an incident involving a manhole

with fire department activity. Intrigued by this, he started taking photos which sparked a new dimension in his life. In short, he began taking photos at FDNY incidents, particularly of personnel following up by presenting the photos to them. Their appreciation of this is what created this book. The book has no numbered pages. The activities took place in Manhattan and The Bronx in 2025. The descriptions are of the dates, number of alarms, street locations, names of the personnel and the fire company they were part of.

Some photos are of the overall scene, while many others are isolated shots of firefighters on the sidelines doing what most fire photographers would not consider. Most fire photographers concentrate on the flames, but Benjamin in addition to that concentrated on individuals and groups of personnel. As the Forward by a lieutenant put it, it “captures the FDNY in its purest form-honest, raw, yet undeniably powerful.” The author also proinformation technical vides regarding the film and camera he used, as well as settings. There are both black and white, and color photos. It is an enjoyable book giving tribute to “New York’s Bravest.”

The river is known to have extremely deep pockets, rapidly changing currents and flow, and deceivingly dangerous topography and rapids.

National Park Service staff, as well as water operations teams from

communities all along the Delaware River, warn continuously that life jackets are an absolute must for anyone enjoying the recreational opportunities the otherwise pristine, popular waterway offers. A nonswimmer without a life jacket, as in this situation, could tragically bring

a recovery rather than rescue at any time – as is sadly part of this beautiful river’s history.

Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly useful in EMS (Emergency Medical Services). Speech to text is one of the most used functions of AI allowing crews to use talk-to-text and allow hands-on treatment of the patient without interruptions to scribble a few (commonly indecipherable) words during treatment.

In addition, AI can be used to help dispatch the closest available ambulances to the scene and help find the fastest route to the hospital to save valuable minutes until hospital treatment.

Artificial Intelligence is also helping to train new EMTs by creating simulations including mass casualty incidents, producing relevant vitals as per the scenario, and offer simulations of cardiac and other relevant body functions while recording and/or correcting a clinician’s decisions for treatment. While students need to learn to “think for themselves”, the AI can catch errors and offer correction so that in the actual field, the actions of a health care provider are more in line with the patient’s needs.

Using location-based technology, dispatch can utilize AI to contact the closest ambulance, perhaps even the best equipped for the call, and provide accessible routes. Reviewing patient statistics and treatments can make it easier on an ambulance service to maintain necessary supplies and stock as well as helping management to adhere to a budget.

Scheduling manpower is also easier when history, weather conditions, road closings, and special events are input and analyzed by the system.

Artificial Intelligence assists us, but does NOT replace handson care and, especially the tell-tale symptoms that trained EMTs and Paramedics notice are vital to patient care. While Artificial Intelligence may seem like the “final word” in treatment and more, but, analyzing patient condition with actual vitals, health history, patient comfort and complaints and using their own intelligence to make many patient care decisions.

The same rule applies to the corps’ management – they need to know their providers, understand their needs, skills and experience, and ensure they’ve provided all the tools their providers need.

With the use of electronic PCRs, state reporting can be simplified and transmitted electronically.

Specific tools are being made available, and many agencies are beginning to utilize them. Some AI tools can help to monitor the patient’s heart rate and other vitals while enroute to the hospital providing receiving doctors and staff with a clear history of the patient’s medical crisis. When a 911 call is received, Artificial Intelligence can help guide a layperson through CPR and other emergency care while they wait for the ambulance’s arrival.

While AI tools are used increasingly in the field, it is doubtful that the role of EMT (or Paramedic) will ever be obsolete.

Even though heart rate can be monitored, CPR can be administered, and routes to the hospital can be suggested, the human component of health care remains vital. As yet, AI cannot understand a patient’s fears or provide comfort that only human contact is capable of – but as an assist in saving lives, Artificial Intelligence is definitely making inroads and helping to save lives.

Two-Vehicle MVA Slows Traffic on Old Little Britain Rd in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Good Will Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle MVA with unknown injuries on July 1st. Town of Newburgh Police and Town of Newburgh EMS were on scene.

Firefighters assisted with traffic control, disconnected the vehicles' batteries, and made both vehicles safe. They also spread Speedy Dry on fluids that had leaked onto the roadway. One driver was evaluated by EMS. Traffic was reduced to one lane, and Old Little Britain Road was closed at D'Alfonso Road. Town of Newburgh Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

One Person Treated Following Route 300 Crash in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY – Winona Lake Engine Company and Orange Lake Fire Department were called to a MVA on Route 300 in front of Denny's restaurant, June 27th. The Town of Newburgh Police Department, New York State Police, and Town of Newburgh EMS also responded. One person was treated.

Arkansas: Larry Dale "Muff" Mustion Jr., 44 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: Sept. 18, 2025 Death Date: Sept. 19, 2025 Fire Department: Luxora Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On September 18, 2025, at 9:15 p.m., Lieutenant Larry Mustion Jr. responded with the Luxora Volunteer Fire Department to an outdoor fire that was spreading toward a dry wooded area. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters packed up the hoses and returned to the station. The following day at 12:12 p.m., Lieutenant Mustion passed away after suffering a cardiovascular event.

Alabama: Alexander G. Trenier, 63 Rank: Deputy Chief Incident Date: Feb. 22, 2025 Death Date: Feb. 23, 2025 Fire Department: City of Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Initial Summary: On February 22, 2025, at 7:33 a.m., Deputy Chief Alexander Trenier responded to a residential fire call. After returning to the station, Deputy Chief Trenier reported that he was not feeling well and turned duties over to another chief. He then went home sick.

On February 23, 2025, family was unable to reach Deputy Chief Trenier by phone. When the family went to his house to check on him, they found Deputy Chief Trenier deceased.

New York: Laurence "Larry" Pude, 83 Rank: Fire Police Captain Incident Date: April 4, 2025 Death Date: April 4, 2025 Fire Department: Cambria Volunteer Fire Company Inc. Initial Summary: On April 4, 2025, at 10:26 a.m., Fire Police Captain Laurence Pude responded to the fire station at the time of an alarm. Fire Police Captain opened the station building for other responders which included opening all the truck bay doors. After the responding truck left the station, Fire Police Captain also completed other duties at the station in support of the incident and closed all truck bay doors.

Fire Police Captain Pude then responded to the emergency scene and provided traffic and scene management. Later that day at a neighboring fire company fundraising event, Fire Police Captain Pude suffered a medical event that caused him to collapse and become unresponsive. Resuscitation efforts began immediately. Fire Police Captain Pude was then transported to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pronounced deceased.

New York: Joseph John Mazza, Sr., 47 Rank: Firefighter/EMT Incident Date: Aug. 22, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 23, 2025 Fire Department: Pocatello Mount Fire Company Initial Summary: On August 22, 2025, at 4:06 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Joseph John Mazza Sr. responded to an emergency medical call with the Pocatello Mount Hope Fire Company. The company returned to service from the incident at 4:50 p.m. On August 23, 2025, at 4:35 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Mazza suffered a medical episode at his residence. Firefighter/EMT Mazza was transported to a local hospital where he later died due to a cardiovascular event.

Multi-Agency Response to Serious Car vs. Semi Crash on Route 22 in Canaan CANAAN, NY - Emergency crews responded to Route 22 at Flints Crossing Road/Peaceful Valley Road for a serious motor vehicle collision involving a car and a semi-truck, prompting a large-scale multiagency response, May 27th.

Upon arrival, Canaan firefighters JUMP TO FILE# initiated vehicle ex- 061926109 trication operations using hydraulic rescue tools to gain access to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Due to the severity of the injuries, additional resources were requested, including a mutual aid paramedic and a medical helicopter.

A landing zone was established nearby to facilitate air medical transport, and Route 22 was closed during helicopter operations. Multiple fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies operated on scene, including Canaan units, Chatham Rescue Squad, Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police.

Elwyn "Bud" Eaton, the longtime past chief of Chenango Fire Co., passed away on June 26th. Eaton dedicated decades to the fire department, supporting community safety, emergency response, and firefighter training while holding senior positions. He was a wellliked mentor who helped the department grow over many years by imparting his knowledge to newer colleagues. His unwavering leadership, loyalty to the fire service, and commitment to public service were recalled by fellow firefighters throughout Broome County.

Patient Airlifted After Suffering Severe Burns in Coeymans Hollow Fire Pit Incident COEYMANS HOLLOW, NY - Coeymans Hollow Volunteer Fire Co. responded to an EMS call involving a patient who suffered significant burns after falling into a fire pit, June 26th.

Upon arrival, JUMP TO FILE# Chief Haight as- 063026101 sessed the patient and advised Albany County Medic 3 of burns to the arm, torso, and face. Due to the severity of injuries, it was determined that air medical transport was required for specialized burn care.

Assistant Chief Williams coordinated the response, requesting a landing zone at Joralemon Park. Rescue units established and secured the site, with direct communication maintained with the incoming LifeNet flight crew.

The patient was transported

by Ravena Rescue Squad to the landing zone and then airlifted by LifeNet to a regional burn center for further treatment.

Rollover Crash on I-84 Sends One to Hospital COURTESY OF NORTHPOLE FIRE COMPANY

The Northpole Fire Company responded to a working structure fire in the Town of Rutland on June 15th as part of a third-alarm mutual assistance assignment. Engine 2, Tanker 1, Chief 1, and Chief 3 responded to the scene at 4:59 a.m., according to officials. While supporting firefighters from many nearby departments, crews constructed water supply operations and supplied manpower.

NEWBURGH, NY - Orange Lake and Winona Lake Fire Departments responded to a rollover MVA on Interstate 84 westbound at mile marker 34.9 on July 3rd. New York State Police, Town of Newburgh Police, and Town of Newburgh EMS were on scene. The driver was able to exit the vehicle and was transported by Town of Newburgh EMS to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. Firefighters assisted the driver, checked the vehicle for hazards, and remained on scene until the tow truck arrived. New York State Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

House Destroyed in Three-Alarm Fire on County Road 33 in South Bristol SOUTH BRISTOL, NY - On Tuesday, July 14th at 7:13 p.m., Richmond and Bristol fire departments were dispatched to a house fire at 6104 County Road 33 in the town of South Bristol.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved twostory structure in a wooded area at the end of an 800-foot driveway.

Due to a lack of hydrants in the area, and air temperatures in the 90's, the blaze went to three alarms for tankers and additional personnel. Mutual aid responded to the scene from Naples, Cheshire, East Bloomfield, West

Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Livonia and Hemlock.

The homeowner and a dog were home at the time of the fire and were able to escape to safety.

The displaced occupants were being assisted by the Red Cross.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation by the Ontario County Office of Emergency Management.

Orange County Firefighters Museum Open House MONTGOMERY, NY - On July 9th, the Orange County Firefighters Museum held a soft opening at 141 Clinton Street in the Village of Montgomery. Area firefighters attended to help show residents around the museum. More information about the grand opening and guest speakers will be released at a later date.

In June, Union Springs Fire Department received a Surface Water Rescue Technician training from the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The primary subjects of practical training for firefighters from different departments were emergency response and water rescue operations. Union Springs residents Bradley Thurston, Will Pierce, Kevin Long, and Jessi Waldron completed the training successfully and were certified as Surface Water Rescue Technicians.

Fire Chief Extinguishes New Scotland Garage Fire with Fire Extinguisher NEW SCOTLAND, NY - A fire that broke out in a garage was quickly extinguished in the Town of New Scotland.

The New Salem Fire Department was dispatched to 32 New Salem South Road on JUMP TO FILE# Monday, June 071426161 22nd, just before 8:00 p.m. for a report of a possible structure fire.

The initial call reported smoke inside the home, with the caller believing there was a fire in the attached garage.

New Salem Fire Department Chief Steve Ayers arrived on scene and said there was very little visible smoke upon his arrival.

"Within two minutes, you could start seeing smoke rolling out of the eaves of the house and the garage," Ayers said.

After speaking with the homeowner, Chief Ayers made his way to the garage.

"I cracked the garage door open about two feet and saw the fire was within two feet of the front door," he said. "I opened the garage door and put it out with a fire extinguisher."

Ayers said an air compressor was also on fire, and several gasoline cans were in close proximity to the flames inside the garage.

According to Ayers, the fire is believed to have been caused by an electric vehicle charger that melted at the power source to which it was connected.

He said the electric vehicle was fortunately not inside the garage at the time of the fire.

The homeowner reportedly received a notification on her phone that her vehicle was no longer charging, prompting her to unplug it and move it outside the garage before the fire broke out.

Fire damage was limited to the garage, with some smoke damage inside the house, Ayers said.

Two people were home at the time of the fire; however, no injuries were reported.

The New Salem Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Slingerlands Fire Department.

Tivoli Firefighters Use Drone to Locate Railroad Fire TIVOLI, NY - On July 5th, as strong storms passed across the area, the Tivoli Fire Department responded to a fire along train tracks. The fire, which was blazing between two railroad bridges in a location with restricted access, was quickly located by firefighters using the department's drone. After train travel was briefly stopped for safety, crews used hose lines to cross the tracks, established a water supply from the neighboring bay, and navigated flooded sections of Cruger Island Road.

Troy Firefighters Make an Aggressive Knockdown on Fifth Avenue Fire TROY, NY - On June 14th at 1:46 p.m., the City of Troy Fire Department was dispatched to 83 5th Avenue for a reported structure fire.

The caller reported smoke coming from the kitchen cabinets and walls. Engine 4, Engine 2, Engine 1, JUMP TO FILE# the Rescue Squad, 071526141 Truck 1, Truck 2, Medic 4, and the Battalion Chief responded to the scene.

Police units arrived before the fire department and encountered heavy smoke conditions on the second and third floors.

Officers immediately began evacuating the residence. Engine 4 arrived shortly afterward, advanced to the second floor, and immediately transmitted a Signal 30 for a working structure fire.

The next-arriving engine company laid a supply line to Engine 4 and connected to a nearby hydrant.

Firefighters deployed a 1¾-inch handline to the second and third floors and began opening up the walls to gain access to the fire.

Crews inside notified command that ladders were needed at the rear of the building so firefighters could begin opening the exterior wall, as they believed the fire was traveling upward through the wall voids. As firefighters pulled apart the walls and ceiling, they located the fire extending through the concealed void space and quickly began knocking it down.

Firefighters on the third floor advised command that heavy smoke conditions remained. Crews on the second floor continued opening the ceiling while firefighters on the third floor checked the floors and walls for additional fire extension. Com-

mand also requested the response of Code Enforcement.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. Once crews confirmed that all visible fire had been extinguished, firefighters used ventilation fans to clear smoke from the structure.

Fire investigators arrived on scene and began investigating the

cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The incident was brought under control quickly due to the aggressive interior attack and coordinated efforts of the Troy Fire Department. Firefighters returned to service approximately 30 minutes later.

Quick Action Limits Damage at Williamsville House Fire WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - At around 1:00 a.m. on June 27th, the Main-Transit, Snyder, and Getzville fire departments provided mutual aid to the Williamsville Fire Department in response to a house fire on Lehn Springs Drive reported by an attentive neighbor. The first person to arrive was a mutual assistance officer, who used a portable water extinguisher to halt the fire outside the house until other crews could arrive. Firefighters reduced the amount of damage to the house by quickly putting out the fire. There were no reported injuries.

Members of the Baldwinsville Vol. Fire Company celebrated RAM Kailyn Greenwood on June 8th for being chosen to receive the annual scholarship given to graduating seniors for exceptional community service by the Onondaga County Volunteer Firefighters Association. Greenwood has already finished New York State Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (BEFO), Interior Firefighting Operations (IFO), and firefighter survival training while still in high school, according to officials. Heroic Actions in Binghamton Help Occupants Escape Car Fire Safely BINGHAMTON, NY - On July 5th, the Prospect Terrace Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle fire along Route 17 East, where crews encountered a car fully involved upon arrival. Firefighters from Squad 63 promptly deployed a hose line and initiated an aggressive fire attack, successfully bringing the blaze under control within minutes. Despite the complete loss of personal belongings, all occupants were able to escape without injury. Their safe exit was made possible by the quick actions of a young man, whose efforts played a critical role in ensuring everyone made it out safely.

Port Jervis Fire Department Remembers 40 Late Past Chiefs in Advance of Historic Parade PORT JERVIS, NY – In July, Port Jervis Fire Department members, along with city officials and members of the community, visited late past fire chief graves in multiple local cemeteries.

The service of these JUMP TO FILE# 40 late past chiefs 070926127 dates back to the department’s founding in 1858. Paying graveside tribute has been a tradition before each of the department’s annual Inspection Day Parades.

To date, the department has had 50 chiefs in all, including 10 living current and/or past chiefs.

Many of these 10 chiefs took part in this year’s chief grave visits, and the reading of the name of each late chief.

The names of all 50 that have served the department, and their terms of service, follow this article.

The department's traditional pre-parade memorial service, held on July 10th, remembered all late firefighters, with specific mention of five PJFD firefighters who have passed since last year’s service: William J. Large Sifter Machine and Multiple Loaders Catch Fire on River Road in East Greenbush CLINTON HEIGHTS, NY On June 13, 2026, at 2:27 PM, the Clinton Heights Fire Department was dispatched to 3346 River Road for a reported structure fire. Police units from the City of Rensselaer reported seeing a heavy column of smoke in the distance along River Road to their dis- JUMP TO FILE# patcher. Multiple 062826125 callers reported some type of factory or field on fire. Police units arrived on scene and confirmed they had a large machine on fire, along with mulch piles that were also burning. The Chief of the Clinton Heights Fire Department requested the City of Rensselaer Fire Department, Clinton Heights Fire Department manpower, and the Best Luther Fire Department with their tankers to respond to the scene, as officers reported a heavily involved piece of machinery that had begun to explode.

With an extremely limited water supply on scene and a significant distance between the entryway and the fire location, command requested tankers from South Schodack, Castleton, East

Schodack, Schodack Valley, Nassau, West Sand Lake, Defreestville, Stuyvesant, and Averill Park Fire Departments to respond. Command confirmed there was a large sifter on fire, along with a large pile of mulch. Engine 8-2 arrived on scene and began extinguishing the fire involving the sifter. As they were doing so, Truck 8 arrived on scene, along with an additional engine and truck company from the City of Rensselaer. With temperatures hovering around 90°F, the extreme heat created additional challenges for firefighters battling the fire.

Firefighters established a significant tanker operation on River Road as the Best Luther Fire Department supplied water to the scene from the main roadway. Firefighters continued working to knock down the fire conditions in the mulch pile and machinery. During operations, two loaders working on scene began to have debris inside their motor compartments catch fire, and firefighters shifted their efforts to extinguishing the fires within the motor areas. The Defreestville Fire Department established a tanker fill site at 507 South Road to support water operations. Multiple cover companies

from Rensselaer County began moving south to cover fire departments that were operating at the scene.

With temperatures remaining around 90°F, conditions continued to make operations difficult for firefighters. Crews continued working on scene, pulling apart portions of the mulch pile and applying water to the heavy machinery that was burning within the piles. Multiple firefighters from numerous agencies arrived on scene and entered the operational area to assist with

the labor-intensive operation. With firefighters becoming exhausted, command requested that multiple cases of water be brought to the scene by the Mountain View Fire Company, which was covering the Clinton Heights Fire Department.

As firefighters continued operations, the truck company extended its nozzle over the machinery and utilized master streams to knock down the remaining fire.

As multiple tankers arrived on scene, a significant water supply was established, and within approx-

imately 30 minutes, firefighters had the entire incident under control.

Command requested the City of Rensselaer Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit respond to the scene. Firefighters continued working for an extended period to fully address the incident. All units returned to service a few hours after the fire was extinguished due to the extensive pickup of large-diameter hose used for the supply line into the scene.

Rapid Fire Attack Contains Vehicle Fire in Auburn AUBURN, NY - Firefighters responded to a reported vehicle fire at the intersection of Clark Street Road and Short Road, June 9th, where crews arrived to find a working fire involving a motor vehicle. Engine 2 arrived within minutes of dispatch and initiated an immediate fire attack, quickly bringing the situation under control. Additional units, including Engines 1 and 2 as well as support apparatus, assisted with suppression and ensured the fire did not spread or escalate. Crews remained on scene to complete overhaul operations and confirm full extinguishment before all units were returned to service later in the afternoon.

Angelica Fire and Rescue Responds to SingleVehicle Crash ANGELICA, NY - On May 31st, in the Town of West Almond, Angelica Fire and Rescue and MTS Ambulance responded to a single-vehicle collision on County Road 2, between Perch Road and County Road 2A. The car veered off the road, collided with a number of trees and other objects, crossed a brook, and eventually returned to the road. Firefighters helped EMS with patient treatment, secured the area, and dealt with automobile dangers. MTS Ambulance took the lone occupant to St. James Hospital in Hornell for assessment. Responding units evacuated the area and resumed operations after finishing tasks and making sure the road was secure.

BINGHAMTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Binghamton Fire Department responded to an incident involving a cat trapped within a storm drain, prompting a careful and methodical rescue operation. Crews from Quint 3 arrived on scene, assessed access points, and worked to safely reach the confined space where the animal was located. Firefighters utilized specialized tools and coordinated efforts to carefully access the drain and retrieve the cat without causing harm. After a controlled and patient operation, the animal was successfully removed and brought back to safety.

Six Killed in Devastating Endwell Knights Inn Fire; Arson Suspect Charged with Manslaughter ENDWELL, NY - On June 22, 2026, at approximately 6:01 a.m., the Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, located at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell. Shortly after 6:00 a.m., members of the Endwell Fire Department arrived to JUMP TO FILE# find heavy black 070126130 smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building, with the fire spreading rapidly.

Multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist, including the New York State Office of Fire, Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Sheriff’s Department, Broome County Executive, the Town of Union Supervisor, and Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team.

Fire Departments responding included: Endwell Fire Department, Endicott Fire Department, West Endicott Fire Department, Union Center Fire Department, West Corners Fire Department, Johnson City Fire Department, Vestal Fire Department, Five Mile Point Fire Department, Prospect Terrace Fire Department, Binghamton Fire Department, and Office of Emergency Services.

Ambulance Companies responding included: Superior Ambulance, Union Ambulance, Broome Ambulance, and Maine Ambulance.

A total of six fatalities were confirmed, including a 58-yearold woman and a family of five.

The Broome County Fire Investigation Team with support from New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control determined the origin of the fire involved human factors and eliminated other possibilities like electrical or natural in cause which ultimately led to the arrest of Tyler J. Russell, 24 of Endwell, on June 22, 2026. Russell was charged with six counts of Manslaughter in the 2nd degree, a class “C” felony and one count of Arson in the 4th degree, a class “E” felony.

Homeowner Action Limits Crawl Space Fire in Sanford SANFORD, NY - On July 4th, Deposit Fire Department crews responded to a reported residential fire in the Town of Sanford, where a fire had occurred in a crawl space beneath a home. Upon arrival, the fire was found to have been largely controlled by the homeowner. Firefighters checked for extension into the structure and conducted overhaul operations to ensure complete extinguishment. The fire was determined to have been caused by fireworks.

PORT JERVIS, NY – 55-year firefighter Gene Hughes was born and raised in Port Jervis and is proud to have served for all of these decades with PJFD and as a member of Maghogomock Hook & Ladder Company.

Hughes was born in Port Jervis on May 5, 1953, graduated from PJHS in 1971, and retired as a lieutenant from NYS Department of Corrections after 26-years. He joined Maghogomock Hook and Ladder at age 18, on September 7, 1971. This was the company his friend and fellow firefighter Bill Haggerty was in, and his own choice for membership as well.

While he has served with many firefighters over the years, Joe Kowal, Sr. is the only really active firefighter that Hughes began with when he joined his company 55-years ago this year.

After all of these decades, Hughes is now the fourth oldest living member of Hooks.

He has always been active in helping his company and the department, other than while he and his wife of 51-years, Fran, moved out of the area to care for Fran’s mother from 2005 to 2022. The couple returned in 2022, and while they now live in neighboring Matamoras, Gene says he has always been proud to say he is from Port Jervis and will always consider Port Jervis his home.

Having held company positions as captain, 1st and 2nd lieutenant, president, vicepresident, trustee, secretary, treasurer, and custodian in past years, Hughes is no longer able to respond as an active firefighter due to some health issues of himself and his wife. However, upon returning to the area in 2022 Hughes immediately resumed assisting the department and his community. He plans to re-

main active in both as long as his health allows him to.

“I have enjoyed every minute as a member of PJFD, and it has certainly made me a better person. I think giving back to the community has so many rewards,” Hughes said.

Hughes was not the first in his family to serve as a firefighter.

His uncles, Vernon and Vincent Kalin, were both members of Excelsior Engine Co. #5. He encourages anyone wishing to become a volunteer firefighter to do so, but not only because they have family or friends in the department. He said they should be willing and ready to commit to do the job, and join for the right reasons.

Over the years, Hughes recalls many responses as a firefighter. These include some very tough ones, and sadly some of the most memorable ones involving someone who died.

“The toughest fire would have to have been the Hungry Elephant,” Hughes recalled. “During this fire, Chris DeVries and I were trapped on the second floor. At the time we were not wearing air packs, and things got really hairy. We managed to get some air in an open window at the top of the stairs, and ran out.”

Hughes recalls being captain of Hooks during the Flood of 1981, and a memorable incident at a fire in the acre.

“Joe Kowal and I went through the front door of the house in the acre and ended up in the basement as the floor had burnt out,” he recalled. “I have learned the importance of having each other’s back, and that every fire has to be evaluated and treated with respect.”

He chuckled in recalling the old saying that only fools rush in.

Hughes would like to see PJFD continue as an all-volunteer department but feels the reality in today’s world is that this is not practical.

“I believe it will become necessary to move in the direction of a partially paid department,” he predicted. “I believe this is going to be the only way to ensure the men and equipment are available to give the city the coverage it needs to be safe.”

What will Hughes be thinking of during Parade Day 2026?

“I will be thinking of what an honor it will be, and I will have my family, especially my great grandchildren there and it will be an honor and privilege to ride past them and hear them yelling at me,” Hughes said.

“I believe my family have all been pleased about my active years. They have always been supportive and Fran has never had an issue with all of the events we had planned that went by the wayside because of fires,” Hughes said.

He said his great granddaughter Alessia and great grandson Lido have made posters, and he believes they are as excited as he is for this day.

“I can only say what an honor it is to be asked to be the Grand Marshal and it’s something I will never forget.”

Vestal Crews Tackle Difficult Brush Fire with Mutual Aid Support VESTAL, NY - The Vestal Fire Department responded on May 19th to a brush fire near the municipal water tank on Verna Drive after the first unit to arrive reported a major fire blazing on the steep hillside. The scene was attended to by all four Vestal fire departments. While Vestal EMS offered crews medical standby backup, the Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad helped by transporting firefighters and equipment to the fire site utilizing a UTV. Endwell Fire, West Corners Fire, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Vestal Fire Department Auxiliary, and the Vestal Police Department—which used a drone to help with incident operations and site assessment—provided further support.

TROY, NY - On July 3rd at 10:22 PM, the City of Troy Fire Department was dispatched to 25 St. Vincent’s Avenue for a reported structure fire. The caller reported that the house was on fire.

Engine 6, Engine 3, Engine 2, the Rescue JUMP TO FILE# Squad, Truck 2, 071826151 Truck 1, Medic 4, and the Battalion Chief responded to the scene.

While units were responding, the father lowered his children from the top floor of the home to the ground as the first floor was blocked by fire. The father successfully rescued his two children before jumping from the top floor of the home to the ground below.

Engine 6 arrived on scene, pulled into the driveway of the residence, and notified dispatch that they had a working structure fire with smoke showing from the building. The crew advised they would be deploying a hand line.

Firefighters forced entry into the structure and found a well-involved kitchen fire. As firefighters deployed the hand line, the second-due engine company back-laid to a nearby hydrant. Firefighters made their way inside the structure, quickly conducted a primary search, and located the family cat, which they successfully rescued from the home.

Firefighters located the father, who had jumped from the window, and were able to evaluate him and move him to a safe location. Medic 4 arrived and evaluated the individual. Firefighters quickly knocked down the heavy fire condition inside the home before it could spread.

search while additional firefighters began extensive overhaul operations.

Command canceled the seconddue truck company and reassigned them to headquarters for standby coverage. Firefighters continued extensive overhaul operations inside the kitchen area and around the kitchen window. The individual who jumped from the top floor of the building was

transported to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and is credited with saving his two children from the fire.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Firefighters returned to service a short time later.

Binghamton Firefighters Rescue Person After 25-Foot Fall Into Creek BINGHAMTON, NY - Binghamton Fire Department personnel arrived at Port Crane on June 4th to help rescue a person who had fallen about 25-feet into a creek. According to officials, the person was thought to have fallen the night before and spent several hours in the creek before being found.

Binghamton's technical rescue squad was called in to help with the operation because of the difficult terrain. Before transferring the patient to EMS for transportation to a nearby hospital, firefighters packed the patient, administered emergency medical care, and securely lifted the person from the creek bed using rope rescue tactics.

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY – Westbrookville Volunteer Fire Company, Station 34, was dispatched to a reported water rescue on the Basha Kill (Wildlife Management Area, Sullivan County, NY) on the evening of July 1, 2026.

A call had come in to Sullivan County 911 reporting a kayaker in distress with initial information indicating the individual had reached shore somewhere between Haven Road and the winery on South Road, but was unable to safely make it out.

WVFC Chief Bo Tunno said 34-1 established command and immediately requested Rock Hill Fire Department's drone response.

Crews from 34-11 and 34-51 positioned on opposite sides of the reported location while additional mutual aid resources were requested, including: Lumberland Fire-Dept Glen Spey with their airboat, Orange County Battalion 8 Water Rescue Team, including Sparrow Bush airboat, Port Jervis Fire Department with a boat, Huguenot Fire Company with a boat, as well as Rock Hill Fire Department - NY with their rescue boat and drone.

Huguenot also provided station coverage with their Squad for Westbrookville, while Mamakating EMS stood by at the scene, and Sul-

livan County Commissioner of Emergency Management responded to the scene.

A command post was established on Haven Road. Upon arrival, the Commissioner of Emergency Management quickly deployed a drone to the GPS coordinates obtained by Sullivan County 911 from the kayaker's cell phone. Within minutes, the drone located the individual and began transmitting live video back to the command post.

Using the drone's speaker, responders instructed the kayaker to remain where he was and assured him that rescuers were on the way.

The individual acknowledged the message by signaling with a glow stick. Rock Hill FD also deployed their drone.

With skilled responders and available modern technologies engaged, including a GPS-guided phone, the crew from 34-11 accessed the area via the D&H Canal Towpath. Command was able to monitor the crew's progress in real time and assist with navigation to the victim's location.

Once contact was made, WVF Captain Holmes assessed the

kayaker, provided hydration, and confirmed he was physically able to walk out. The crew then safely escorted him and his kayak back to the roadway, where members from Rock Hill assisted with removing the remaining equipment. As the rescue transitioned from a water operation to a walkout, Battalion 8 and Lumberland were released from staging.

We are happy to report that everyone made it out safely and the rescue was a complete success. The kayaker had the appropriate safety equipment, including a whistle, which also helped rescuers pinpoint his location.

WVF would like to thank all of their mutual aid partners, the Sullivan County NY Bureau of Fire, Sullivan County 911, and Sullivan County Emergency Management for their outstanding assistance. The rapid use of drone technology, GPS coordinates, and coordinated response from multiple agencies played a critical role in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.

NEW SALEM, NY — More than a dozen Capital Region fire departments came together on June 27, 2026, for a large-scale rural water supply training exercise hosted by the New Salem Fire Department. The exercise provided firefighters with realistic training on one of the most critical aspects of firefighting in areas without municipal hydrant systems.

Adams Center Firefighters Support Multi-Agency Structure Fire Response in Pinckney PINCKNEY, NY - Members of the Adams Center Volunteer Fire Co. responded to a structure fire on Pinckney Road in the Town of Pinckney on June 20th as part of an automatic mutual aid assignment to help the Rodman Fire Department. According to officials, the tanker, Engines 1 and 2, and the department were sent to the location at 8:27 p.m. In order to support fire suppression efforts and supply extra resources, firefighters collaborated with other agencies from Jefferson and Lewis counties. Crews from Adams Center stayed on scene until just after midnight before going back to work.

DEPOSIT FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire Breaks Out at High-Hazard Industrial Building in Deposit DEPOSIT, NY - The Deposit Fire Department, assisted by Eastern Broome Emergency Services and multiple mutual aid companies, responded to a reported building fire in the Town of Deposit on June 28th. First-arriving units confirmed a working fire in the roof of a high-hazard industrial building. Due to the nature of the occupancy and resource demands, a second alarm was requested, bringing additional fire and EMS support to the scene. Crews quickly contained the fire to a small section of the roof and completed overhaul operations to ensure full extinguishment. Masonville Fire Department provided station coverage during the incident. The fire was determined to be accidental, and no injuries were reported.

The annual "Big Water" exercise brought together firefighters from the East Berne Fire Department, Berne Fire Department, Coeymans Fire Department, Delmar Fire Department, North Bethlehem Fire Department, Guilderland Center Fire Department, Selkirk Fire Department, Altamont Fire Department, Medusa Fire Department, Rensselaerville Fire Department, Onesquethaw Fire Department, and Voorheesville Fire Department.

The exercise simulated a large-scale structure fire requiring a sustained water supply in a rural setting.

Firefighters established multiple tanker shuttle operations using portable water tanks, commonly referred to as portable ponds, to continuously deliver water to the scene. One operation utilized three 3,000-gallon portable ponds and eight tankers to supply water to the incident. A second operation employed three additional portable ponds and seven tankers, with New Salem engines supplying water to a ladder company during the exercise.

Two water fill sites were established to support the tanker shuttle operations—one located on Tygert Road and the second on Pine Street in Voorheesville. To increase the realism of the training, firefighters were presented with unexpected challenges that commonly occur during emergency incidents. During the exercise, one fill site was taken out of service, requiring crews to quickly adjust operations. In addition, a tanker route became blocked by a stopped train, forcing incident commanders to develop an alternate plan without interrupting the water supply operation.

Despite the simulated complications, firefighters successfully adapted to both situations, allowing the exercise to continue without inter-

ruption. During the two-hour training period, firefighters flowed more than 200,000 gallons of water through both portable pond operations, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated tanker shuttle operations and interagency cooperation.

The New Salem Fire Department hosts the annual water supply drill each year to ensure firefighters throughout the re-

gion remain proficient in rural water supply operations and prepared to deliver large volumes of water during realworld emergencies where municipal hydrants are unavailable. The exercise also provides departments with an opportunity to strengthen working relationships and improve coordination during large-scale mutual aid incidents.

Firefighters Contain Structure Fire on Ann Street in City of Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - City of Newburgh Fire Department responded to a structure fire at approximately 7:30 p.m. on July 1st at 287 Ann Street. Command arrived on scene and requested a second alarm after reporting smoke showing. Firefighters used handlines and hand tools to battle the fire. Mutual aid responded to the scene from West Point Ladder, Air National Guard Engine, and New Windsor Engine. Central Hudson was requested to cut power. Deputy Orange County Fire Coordinator 36-13 was also on scene. City of Newburgh Police closed the roadway, and Empress EMS was on scene. The origin and cause are being investigated by the City of Newburgh Fire Department. Cronomer Valley and Highland Engine stood by at the Public Safety Building.

Third-Alarm Fire Draws Adams Center Mutual Aid Response to Rutland RUTLAND, NY - Members of the Adams Center Volunteer Fire Company responded to a working structure fire on State Route 126 in the Town of Rutland on June 15th as part of a third-alarm mutual aid assignment to support the Rutland Fire Department. According to officials, the department joined several nearby agencies in assisting with fire control efforts after being dispatched at 4:59 a.m.

On June 11th, the East Amherst Fire Department expanded its emergency medical response capabilities by putting a new advanced life support ambulance into operation. A larger patient compartment, a hydraulic stretcher, a motorized stair chair, a LUCAS automatic CPR machine, a cardiac monitor-defibrillator, a safety restraint system for caregivers, and cutting-edge emergency medical equipment are all aspects of the four-wheel drive ambulance. According to department officials, the new unit will improve patient treatment and increase EMS staff safety. The ambulance will assist paramedics, EMTs, and Advanced EMTs in providing emergency medical services in East Amherst and the surrounding areas.

Two-Vehicle Crash on State Route 17K Sends One to Hospital NEWBURGH, NY - Good Will FD responded to a two-vehicle MVA with injuries on June 25th at State Route 17K and Unity Place. Town of Newburgh Police and EMS were on scene.

State Route 17K was blocked to eastbound traffic at the entrance to Adams. Firefighters applied Speedy Dry to fluids in the roadway and made both vehicles safe from hazards. One subject was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital by Town of Newburgh EMS. Town of Newburgh Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Checking Egos Chaplain’s Corner Didymus McHugh

There was a time when an instructor was teaching his students to do an operation. Someone asked him about his qualifications, and it was found out that he did not have the certification to actually do the training for what he was teaching.

So that meant that he was training the people to do what they would have no certification or authority to do. Did the instructor understand the liability he was opening himself and the training center too? But the instructor thought that since he was the instructor, he would not listen to the higher authority.

There are other leaders of organizations, who have a title and some education and think that they are the all-knowing entity. They boss people around and have people slowly do more and more unethical and then illegal actions. The people listen to them because they put themselves in the posture of the ultimate authority.

That reminds me of a story that Jesus talked about going to a wedding banquet. He discussed taking the seat of lower honor because if you decide to take the seat of higher honor and someone comes that is honored more by the host, how embarrassed will you be to be moved to a seat of lower standing? It is better to take the set of lower standing and have the host elevate you in front of others, publicly showing your worth.

There are so many people who think so much of themselves and that is the only honor that they should receive.

Jesus stated that He was here to serve and not to be served. He also discussed that the person who puts himself first will be last.

It's a simple thing that we need

to understand. It is called humility.

We should be humble enough to know that we do not know everything. We can't know everything. We need to have the wisdom to seek advice from those who are highly trained with more experience, who are considered the experts in the field. But even when we are considered experts in the field, we still should not be full of ourselves.

Did you know that if you enter a horse paddock and you have the wrong attitude that the horses will keep you in check? They can sense what a person is like and if you come in with the wrong attitude, they will chase you out.

Are you humbling enough to know that you don't know it all? Are you strong enough to say that you are not all that? Are you a servant leader or a bully leader?

I want to mention, before we part, a deputy chief that I know.

When I met him, he was a battalion chief and you could tell, just by looking at him and watching him that he was the man in charge. The men that he has served with and the men that he is responsible for hold him in high regard, and that can be that is because he holds them in high regard. I have watched him take a call from the union president and express concern about a serious condition. The chief reassured that he was looking out for the men. The deputy chief is so respected that many people want to serve with him, when they cannot respond with the apparatus. To me, it also means a lot that he has a Biblical verse on his dry erase board, that he lives by and that he picked out his badge number reflecting that verse.

Please remember to stay humble and not full of yourself. I understand that we may do some amazing things, but many times, it is just the performance of our duty.

AMHERST, NY - On July 6th, the Williamsville Fire Department responded on mutual assistance to a two-alarm fire at Abbey Square, which is situated at the intersection of Union Road and Wehrle Drive. Reports of a car hitting the structure prompted the first call at 3:07 a.m. Heavy fire was reported to be extending through the roof by the first command officer from the Snyder Fire Department to arrive. A drone and an excavator were among the specialized resources required to support the incident, and other nearby departments arrived to help with firefighting efforts.

After more than 22 years of service to the City of Auburn, Firefighter Jeffrey Salvage was honored by the Auburn Fire Department on June 12th as he finished his last overnight shift and retired. Salvage joined the department on March 31, 2004, according to officials, and served in every fire company before dedicating most of his career to A Platoon Engine Company 3. He led the department's fitness program for the 2014 recruit class, worked as a certified peer fitness trainer, and responded to emergency situations. Department officials wished Salvage a long, healthy, and fulfilling retirement and commended him for his years of devoted service, mentoring, and dedication to firefighter wellness.

Enrique Elizalde became the newest probationary employee of the Carthage Fire Department on June 9th. According to officials, Elizalde is an American Army veteran who devoted his military career to serving and defending the country. Harpursville Fire Department Responds to Utility Pole Crash HARPURSVILLE, NY - A truck towing a trailer crashed and damaged a NYSEG utility pole, prompting the Harpursville Fire Department to respond on June 7th. While the damaged car was being tended to, firefighters stayed on scene, controlled traffic, and guarded the area. Until NYSEG utility technicians arrived to evaluate the damaged pole and secure the scene, crews kept a safety perimeter. There were no reported injuries.

Three-Vehicle Crash with Injuries Closes Broadway in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Newburgh City FD responded to a three-vehicle MVA with injuries on Broadway, west of Wisner Ave., on June 24th. City of Newburgh Police were on scene. Car 4 requested Empress EMS respond for three injured parties. Firefighters assisted with injured occupants, applied Speedy Dry to fluids on the roadway, and checked the vehicles for additional hazards.

Empress EMS transported two subjects to Montefiore St. Luke’s Hospital. The roadway was closed to westbound traffic. City of Newburgh Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

The Westmere Fire Department held a training course on car extrication techniques and the use of the department's eDRAULIC Hurst rescue equipment on June 9th. According to officials, firefighters rehearsed skills like window and door removal, which are frequently employed in motor vehicle rescue situations, and reviewed tool operations. In order to enhance control and equipment familiarity, crews also took part in accuracy exercises. In order to help members acquire the dexterity and accuracy required when working around confined patients during extrication occurrences, one of the drills required firefighters to use the rescue gear to pick up and move an egg without causing damage.

Firefighters from the Mattydale Fire Department and members of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department took part in their yearly live fire drill at the Clay Fire Department Training Tower on May 30th. According to officials, firefighters participated in live fire evolutions intended to hone vital fireground abilities in a safe training setting. In order to find and rescue inhabitants while reducing fire conditions, crews concentrated on fire attack operations and Vent, Enter, Search (VES) procedures, which are frequently utilized during structure fire responses.

Garage Fire with HazMat Controlled in City of Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Newburgh FD responded to 88 Benkard Ave. on July 4th for a reported structure fire. Firefighters used hand lines and ground ladders to extinguish the fire inside the garage. Firefighters also ventilated the roof area. More than 55-gallons of oil entered Benkard Ave. and flowed into a catch basin. Firefighters deployed booms prior to the catch basin to help contain the spill. Orange County HAZ-MAT was contacted and responded to the scene. Deputy Orange County Fire Coordinators 36-10 and 36-14 were also on scene. City of Newburgh Police blocked the area off to traffic. The fire remains under investigation.

PORT JERVIS, NY –Joseph Kowal, Jr., a 34-year firefighter with Port Jervis Fire Department, is a native of Port Jervis, born on April 8, 1976, and has lived in his hometown all of his life. He graduated from Port Jervis High School, and first worked in retail right after school. He went on to attend college and then spent 17years working in Port Jervis’ Department of Public Works.

In 2018, Kowal transitioned to working in his family’s multigenerational business, Kowal Brothers Paving, which dated back to 1959. He is currently the owner of that business.

The Kowal family is an allaround close-knit group, not just in business, but overall.

This includes in firefighting service.

Joe Kowal, Jr. joined Port Jervis Fire Department and Maghogomock Hook & Ladder Co. in 1992, at age 16. In doing so, he became part of a long line of family firefighters, that has continued from before and after he joined. The majority, in fact, are still active members of ‘Hooks’, as well as their children now.

“I grew up in the firehouse with my dad, Past Chief Joe, Sr., and my Uncle John Kowal,” Joe said. “My sons, Matt and Ryan, also joined when they too turned 16.”

Grand Marshal Kowal has served in many positions in his company, including as Lieutentant, 2nd Lieutenant, and currently Vice President of H&L. Kowal said he enjoys volunteering and giving back to community, and has gained experience and knowledge which he has been able to pass along to his boys as well as other young members. He is also grateful for the friendships he has made through his service over the years.

hopes it will continue to grow and increase in new memberships. For the department as a whole, he notes that today there are many more requirements being mandated which become an issue in gaining new membership. This, in his opinion, is due to the increased time commitments this requires.

succumbed to his injuries later on. The hardest part of being a firefighter, for Kowal, are such times – seeing tragedies for people and the impact a fire can have on families.

“It is a time commitment for sure. A lot of sacrifices, especially with family time,” he said.

As he looks forward, Kowal says he plans to remain a firefighter forever.

In thinking back to some of the calls over his 34-year service with ‘Hooks/Truck 7’, Kowal recalls a response to a fire on Pike Street where he climbed a fire escape to do a third-floor search.

“Shortly after entering, my fellow firefighter, Dan Lewis, pulled me back out by my feet.

As soon as we got back on the fire escape to descend, that entire room flashed over with flames instantly blowing out the window,” he recalled.

Being always aware of your surroundings and always assessing situations is something Kowal keeps in mind during every call, and he advises others to be sure to do the same.

Another memorable call was the Station 9 fire. He and his dad threw a ladder up to help save a gentleman escape through a third-floor window during this fire.

During another fire, at Sam & Mables, he and fellow firefighter John Pantis were first on scene and used a ground ladder to rescue an infant and his mother to safety. This act was recognized for both John and Joe as Orange County Firefighters of the Year in 1999.

“This was a great and rare honor,” Kowal, Jr. said.

Sadly, Kowal went back in to drag out another victim, but that individual unfortunately

“As long my body lets me,” he said.

With much gratitude, he thanks his father and uncle for showing him the firefighting ways over the years, and guiding him to be a better firefighter.

“I’ve now passed this guidance on to my boys who have become career firefighters.

Matt and Ryan both joined the Air Force as firefighters. Both are now veterans and work professionally as firefighters; Matt for the Department of Defense at Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst in NJ and Ryan, formerly at Shaw AFB and currently at Dorchester County FD in South Carolina,” Kowal, Jr. said.

Kowal is proud of his sons, and he knows they share this pride in him as well as his entire family who volunteers.

“I would like to thank my wife of 30-years, Gina Kowal, for her continued love and support. I’m sure it is difficult for her knowing her husband and two sons put their lives on the line every day for the love of the community,” Kowal said. “I am beyond blessed and grateful.

Kowal is also grateful to his company and the department for recognizing him as Grand Marshal.

“I am appreciative and honored. Thank you,” he said.

Fire Code Inspections – Part 2 IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

With some basics in place from last month’s Fire Code Inspections Part 1 we can now explore an actual inspection and what may occur on a given inspection. This article will be from the perspective of a rookie fire code inspector and how to go about being successful in that role. The first step is to ask yourself what are you inspecting; extinguishers? Alarm systems?

Egress? Just as important as what is being inspected would be where (in what setting) are the inspections; local businesses? A college campus?

New construction?

An incoming inspector can continue to use past record formats which can be based on the location and/or types of issues likely encountered at a given setting. By all means do not be hesitant to suggest and/or implement more efficient changes. An inspector should always strive to improve the inspection process recognizing that in some cases, there may not be any choice. The NYS Education Department uses this form for inspection of schools that would literally take an “act of Congress” to change. Although keeping paper records are usually necessary an inspector moving to digitize would be a move in the right direction making sure to have back-up copies. Consistent with good record keeping would be developing your own quick reference guides or “cheat sheets”. These can help make an inspection proceed more smoothly but more importantly when an inspector develops their own materials it facilitates learning and memo-

rizing necessary standards.

This would be largely dependent on the employing agency and/or the experience of the investigator. Using a checklist during an inspection will always result in missed violations. In fact, according to Town of Brighton Fire Marshal Chris Roth using a checklist “Will cause an inspector to walk past a stack of dynamite while looking for a fire extinguisher.”

Chris further advises to take a more wholistic approach when conducting a fire code inspection and to let the building “talk to you” rather than focusing on single items on a list.

Focusing on a checklist during an inspection may also open the door for a client to walk you past a violation or something they don’t want you to see. Perhaps a locked door that a good inspector will insist on seeing what is in that room.

Before even going out to a site though it is important to thoroughly go over any past inspection records to view when the most previous inspection took place. More importantly past records will show the most frequent violations that have taken place and what compliance efforts have been taken to address those violations. Note that most if not all NFPA standards have language indicating how often an inspection should take place.

For example, NFPA 10 governs fire extinguishers that must be inspected monthly while NFPA 25 talks about standpipe, sprinkler systems and fire pumps all of which have different inspection frequencies.

Reviewing past records will also help to establish a rapport

with any client an inspector is responsible to examine. Establishing rapport does not necessarily mean being friendly or not applying accountability.

Clients will try and take advantage of the new inspector so be prepared. This is why past records and a prior review are so important because an inspector will then see who is honest, accepts responsibility for violations and works to correct them as opposed to a serial excuse-maker.

Picture this conversation: Inspector: I noticed there is a lot of inventory in your storeroom potentially blocking egress.

Store owner: Yeah, we just got a lot of new inventory delivered yesterday and we always get everything processed and put away to avoid that.

Inspector: Really? Because it appears there always seems to be inventory delivered on the day of inspection and the records I reviewed yesterday indicate five violations in the past two years that even when given the opportunity to correct didn’t get done.

Remember what your goals are as a fire inspector though. It isn’t necessarily to go in “guns a blazing”, shutting down businesses and removing tenants from their homes although that could happen. Yes, fire marshals have to deal with violations but should strive to keep businesses open and residents in their homes which in turn keeps people employed, paying taxes and contributing to their community.

What about actually issuing a violation though? Do fire marshals have any discretion

On the one hand establishing rapport will go much further in not only reducing fire code violations but also getting those business owners and landlords to remedy any existing issues. On the other hand, if a violation is observed and recorded then it must be issued because the potential result is just too great to ignore.

This brings us to the wording of any violation. Any violation should NOT be worded such that any remedy will occur within 30 days because that allows an unnecessary and potentially dangerous window for unsafe conditions to continue.

Rather, any violation should be worded such that any remedy be done so IMMEDIATELY and that re-inspection will occur in 30 days and/or as the schedule allows. The latter closes the gap and requires prompt atten-

tion.

A fire code inspector should always keep in mind the bigger picture. Why are these inspections important? Lastly, Fire Inspectors also provide preventative safeguards for firefighters. For example, the discovery of contractors using CSST, a cheaper but thin-walled gas piping system that according to DeWitt Deputy Fire Chief Tim Cowan has been responsible for multiple fires and at least two LODDs (see attached online Power Point – used with permission).

Bay Shore Crews Contain Boat Fire BAY SHORE, NY - Early on July 6th, the Bay Shore Fire Department was called to a boat fire behind a house on South Montgomery Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they discovered a fire in a 17-foot center console vessel's stern compartment. After dispatching Marine 26, firefighters used a dry chemical extinguisher to completely put out the residual fire before extending a hose line from the fireboat. A petroleum spill in the canal was reported to the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau provided on-site assistance. In less than an hour, staff were back on the job after the problem was brought under control without further delay.

Atlantic Beach Rescue Assists at Freeport HazMat Incident FREEPORT, NY - On July 1st, Atlantic Beach Rescue was sent to help the Freeport Fire Department at a Home Depot Store for a reported chemical spill. First-arriving EMS personnel assessed and treated 13 people with minor injuries. The Nassau County Office of the Fire Marshal's hazardous materials teams were assisted by Atlantic Beach Rescue personnel, who also offered medical monitoring. While teams worked on scene, additional members maintained headquarters to keep the hamlet covered for emergencies.

Bohemia Firefighters Battle Working House Fire BOHEMIA, NY - On July 12th at around 6:00 p.m., the Bohemia Fire Department responded to a working house fire.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered intense fire throughout the house and promptly set up several handlines for a vigorous attack from both the inside and outside. After bringing the main body of fire under control, crews spent several hours performing overhaul operations and putting out concealed hot spots. Captain Frank Caputo oversaw the scene, while many nearby fire departments and ambulance services provided mutual aid support.

Commack Firefighters Conduct Technical Rescue Behind Target COMMACK, NY - Early on July 21st, the Commack Fire Department responded to a technical rescue behind the Target store on Veterans Memorial Highway. When firefighters arrived and discovered someone trapped underneath a truck, they started an airbag lifting and strut stabilizing operation right away to safely remove the person. After being extricated, the patient was given to the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps for assessment and care. The Smithtown Fire Department offered mutual aid. Chief Purrazzella was in charge of the operations.

Recently, the North Bellmore FD held practical training on fire safety procedures and propane tank emergencies. In order to replicate situations involving propane leaks and outdoor fuel tanks frequently used with barbecues and heating equipment, firefighters took part in a controlled propane burn-off exercise. According to officials, the training gave participants the opportunity to improve their response abilities and go over safety protocols while working in practical settings. Additionally, the department encouraged locals to check connections, hoses, and propane tanks for leaks before utilizing outdoor grills. Regular maintenance and safety inspections can help lower the danger of propane-related fires and other outdoor hazards during warmer weather.

On June 26th, members of the Bay Shore FD finished their monthly training, which focused on vehicle rescue operations.

Senior squad members conducted a practical extrication exercise using HURST E-Series hydraulic rescue tools after reviewing rescue situations that firefighters might encounter in Bay Shore and the Village of Brightwaters. Firefighters reinforced procedures used in complex car rescues by practicing tunneling under a four-door automobile involved in a simulated collision with a commercial trailer.

At around 3:05 p.m. on June 26th, the Center Moriches FD responded to a pedestrian who had been hit by a car on Main Street, just west of the firehouse. After a prompt evaluation, EMS concluded that the patient needed to be sent to a trauma center. To assist with the medical evacuation, firefighters set up a landing zone at the ball field off Beachfern Road and called in a Suffolk County Police aircraft.

Bethpage Firefighters Extinguish Car Fire on Hicksville Road BETHPAGE, NY - A reported automobile fire at the intersection of Hicksville Road and Iris Place prompted the Bethpage Fire Department to respond on July 2nd. On arrival, Engines 9055, 9044, and 9077 worked to put out the fire. As incident commander, Assistant Chief Ganshaw oversaw operations, ensuring scene safety and coordinating suppression efforts. There were no reported injuries. Before leaving the scene, firefighters secured the car, looked for any fire extensions, and removed any last hot spots.

Center Moriches Firefighters Use Jaws of Life at Crash CENTER MORICHES, NY - On June 26th at around 7:20 p.m., the Center Moriches Fire Department responded to a twovehicle collision near the intersection of Montauk Highway and Neville Street. When firefighters arrived, they found one car with severe damage to the driver's side up against a power pole. The driver's door was removed and the occupant was successfully extricated by crews using hydraulic rescue tools. The occupants of the second vehicle were unharmed, but the driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. While emergency personnel worked at the incident, Montauk Highway was closed for around 30 minutes.

On July 11th, Bohemia Fire Department personnel balanced emergency response, community involvement, and training. While some firefighters finished a ParaTech training course centered on technical rescue operations, others participated in the Suffolk County Firefighters Parade in Bay Shore. Pressurized lifting airbags, structural shoring methods for building collapses, and vehicle stabilization procedures utilized during extrication incidents were all discussed in the practical training.

Two Injured After Vehicle Leaves Roadway in Bay Shore BAY SHORE, NY - On July 19th, the Bay Shore Fire Department, along with the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance and the New York State Police, responded to a car accident in which the vehicle veered off the road and into a wooded area. When firefighters arrived, the car had two people inside. After the car hit a tree and came to rest in the brush, one person was seriously hurt and the driver was only slightly injured. Both injured people were sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Three Cats Rescued During Bay Shore House Fire BAY SHORE, NY - On July 8th, the Bay Shore Fire Department responded to a working house fire in the Bay Shore neighborhood of Penataquit Point. When firefighters arrived, they discovered an active fire and promptly verified that every resident had left the house safely. In order to stop the fire from spreading further, crews extended attack lines. Three cats were safely removed from the house by firefighters during operations. After suffering a slight burn, one firefighter was taken to a burn center for assessment. The Suffolk County Arson Squad and the Islip Town incident Marshal's Office are still looking into what caused the fire.

Center Moriches Crews Extinguish Fuel Pump Fire CENTER MORICHES, NY - Just after 10:30 p.m. on June 23rd, the Center Moriches Fire Department responded to a car accident involving a fuel pump at a Mobil station on Wading River Road and the North Service Road of Sunrise Highway. Firefighters were informed while on the road that the car had collided with a fuel pump and had taken fire. Crews swiftly put out the fire, secured the area, and made sure there were no more dangers or fuel leaks. EMS assessed the driver and found no injuries. Within 30 minutes, firefighters were back on duty after the area was turned over to the Suffolk County Police and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal for investigation.

More Than 100 Firefighters Battle Fifth-Alarm Blaze in Queens QUEENS, NY - Queens firefighters (FDNY) were busy Saturday afternoon, June 13th, as a fifth alarm was transmitted for Box 7967 following a fire on the top floor of an occupied multiple dwelling at 41-40 Denman Street. The fire spread from the top-floor apartment into several adjoining apartments and the cockloft. A quick and aggressive attack by New York's Bravest prevented the fire from extending into the other wings of the H-type building. Approximately 30 units and more than 100 firefighters battled the blaze. Several firefighters sustained injuries, though they are believed to be minor.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

FDNY Honors Bravery at Annual Medal Day Ceremony MANHATTAN, NY - New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore and Chief of Department John M. Esposito presided at the FDNY’s annual Medal Day held at City Hall Plaza in June.

Medals were presented to FDNY Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs, Fire Marshals, Dispatchers, Fire Protection Inspectors,

and Officers for their lifesaving work in 2025.

Notable medal recipients included Lieutenant Patrick T. Donlon, who received the Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr. Medal and NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs Association Medal for his

successful removal of a victim during a fully involved apartment fire in the Bronx, as well as Paramedic Naytasha M. Doyle and Probationary Firefighter Paul T. Saladis, III (for incident while Paramedic) who received the Christopher J. Prescott Medal for their heroic actions at a Brooklyn fire in 2025.

FDNY Wounded Veterans Complete 1,000-Mile Journey at FDNY Ten House MANHATTAN, NY - After completing their 1,000-mile bicycle ride from Jacksonville, FL, participants in the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride 250 to Engine 10/Ladder 10 in Manhattan were greeted by members of the FDNY on May JUMP TO FILE# 29th.

According to of- 061826150 ficials, the ride brought together injured warriors from all around the nation and demonstrated how cycling can benefit in mental, emotional, and physical healing.

The event raised awareness of the difficulties experienced by injured service members while honoring the participants' tenacity and resolve.

A closing ceremony was held at Ten House to recognize the riders’ accomplishments and honor their military service. FDNY members joined supporters in applauding the veterans for their dedication, resilience, and commitment throughout the journey.

QUEENS, NY — June 11 — A 15-year-old student who had cardiac arrest at a Queens school in June was saved thanks to a coordinated response by FDNY EMS personnel, firefighters, and school personnel.

When EMTs Alexis Torres and Justin Sarapaivanit of Station 45 arrived, they discovered that school staff was already administering CPR and using an automatic external defibrillator (AED) on the premises. The AED had already given three shocks before EMS arrived. The EMTs took over patient care right away, verified that the student was still experiencing cardiac arrest, and proceeded with advanced resuscitation.

Members of Engine 325 arrived shortly afterward to assist with patient care and prepare the student for rapid transport. As the patient was being readied for the ambulance, EMTs Torres and Sarapaivanit reassessed the teen and observed signs of Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC), including the return of spontaneous breathing.

Rescue Paramedics Kayla Pasquarello and Meagan Valicenti, along with Lt. Erin Doyle, further stabilized the patient, performed cardiac monitoring and notified the receiving hospital of the incoming critical patient to ensure the emergency department was prepared for arrival.

Quick FDNY Response Prevents Spread at Queens Second-Alarm QUEENS, NY - Battalion 28 transmitted a second alarm for a fire in an occupied multiple dwelling at 590 Grandview Avenue on July 13th. Due to a quick stop, the exposures were saved. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

FDNY Three-Alarm Fire Destroys Historic Church in Brooklyn BROOKLYN, NY - Brooklyn Firefighters needed a Third Alarm to battle a late afternoon church fire in the Bushwick Section of Brooklyn on June 19th. The church, also known as the South Bushwick Reformed Church, was finJUMP TO FILE# ished in 1853.

First arriving 061926134 companies to Kossuth Place and Bushwick Avenue were met with a heavy body of fire on the upper floors of the wooden structure. The historic church was destroyed by the fast-moving blaze.

FDNY More Than 200 FDNY Members Respond to Fourth-Alarm in Staten Island STATEN ISLAND, NY FDNY members responded to a fourth-alarm fire at a senior living facility on Heberton Avenue in Staten Island, June 9th.

According to officials, firefighters discovered a fire on the roof space of the four-story, 43- JUMP TO FILE# unit residential 070126120 complex when they arrived in just over three minutes. In order to limit the fire and find and put out hidden fire in hidden void spaces, engine companies deployed six handlines. In less than two hours, the situation was under control thanks to the response of more than 200 FDNY fire and EMS personnel.

No civilian injuries were reported, although four firefighters suffered minor injuries. The American Red Cross is helping displaced occupants of 14 topfloor units that suffered significant damage. The cause of the fire is being looked into.

FDNY Battles Third-Alarm in Record Heat BROOKLYN, NY - On July 2nd, Box 3-3-194 was transmitted for a Third Alarm fire in a multiple-story commercial building at 485 Scott Avenue. New York’s Bravest fought the stubborn blaze in a heat index of 106-degrees. Several firefighters were injured during the incident, though non-seriously.

FDNY Rescue 2 once ran this 2002 E-One Saulsbury Rescue from Brooklyn. The unit also saw service in Laramie Co. Wyoming.

NEW YORK CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT (FDNY) EUGENE WEBER JR.

This patch belongs to FDNY Battalion 20, located in Bronx County, NYC.

At a ceremony held at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn on June 2nd, personnel of the FDNY were elevated to senior roles within the department's EMS Bureau. Members were elevated to the positions of Captain, Division Chief, Deputy Chief, and Deputy Assistant Chief, according to officials. The recently promoted officers will work in units around New York City, supervising emergency medical operations, providing assistance to staff, and assisting in the development of future EMS leaders.

Paul Miano, Chief of EMS Operations, stressed the value of mentoring, leadership, and helping department members succeed throughout the ceremony.

FDNY Members Conduct Water Rescue Near Brooklyn Bridge Park DAVID BURNS/@FD4D

In June, the FDNY held dedication ceremonies for the inaugural World Trade Center Retired Responders Wall. These members were retired at the time of the September 11th attacks and responded to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site. The Retired Responders Wall is positioned directly across from the WTC Memorial Wall, which honors active members lost to World Trade Center-related illnesses. Together, the walls honor the growing number of FDNY members who have died from illnesses related to their response to the attacks. So far, a total of 154 names has been added to the new wall.

BROOKLYN, NY - As severe weather rolled across the area on June 9th, FDNY firefighters responded to many storm-related situations throughout the city. Firefighters were called to reports of debris falling from scaffolding at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park at around 7:46 p.m., according to officials. Crews were informed of a person in the water nearby as they were working at the area. In order to safely rescue the person, members of Engine 224 swiftly made their way to the waterfront, lowered a firefighter into the water, and used portable ladders. Another bystander who had gone into the water to try to assist the victim was also helped by firefighters.
