WALDEN, NY - Walden FD responded to a reported structure fire at 15 Riverview Street on May 8th. Car One arrived to find heavy smoke and fire on the first floor of a three-story residence, spreading to the second floor. A second alarm was requested, bringing mutual aid to the scene from Coldenham, Montgomery, City of Newburgh, Wallkill, Maybrook, Vails Gate, Pine Bush, and Orange Lake.

GENOA, NY - On April 24th, Genoa Volunteer Fire Department responded to a constmction accident involving a worker who sustained a serious head injury after being struck by the bucket of heavy equip­ ment.

Automatic aid was requested from King Ferry Fire Department and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc. due to the nature of the incident.

Upon arrival, crews located the patient with traumatic injuries con-

& i & sistent with a blunt force impact to the head. It was unclear whether the patient had initially been pinned by the equipment bucket, but they were found free of the machine when units arrived.

Firefighters immediately initi­ ated patient care and ensured the

stabilization of the involved equip­ ment to secure the scene.

Once stabilized, care of the pa­ tient was transferred to Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc., who as­ sumed transport to Upstate Medical Trauma Center. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office also assisted on scene. All responding units cleared and returned to service in under an hour.

C heshire F ire fig h te rs Lead S u cce ssfu l 40-F oo t C liff Rescue CHESHIRE, NY - The Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department was called to the southern end of its district on May 2nd for a specialized rescue involving a dog and a person who were stranded about 40-feet down a cliff. According to officials, further help from the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department and the Canandaigua Volunteer Fire Department was needed due to the isolated location and challenging access. The dog and the person were both rescued unharmed. The New York State Police, the Naples Ambulance, and the Ontario County Sheriff's Office also offered support.

On April 21st, members of the Caroga Lake Vol. Fire Co. finished the department's fire rescue pontoon boat. The boat was equipped with a davit crane lift that was intended to use a rescue basket to extract injured victims from the water. Additionally, it has radio communications technology, LED lighting for nighttime operations, a fixed master stream nozzle installed on the bow, and a 500-GPM pump for shoreline and boat fire suppression. The device can move medical patients to specific staging sites for treatment and hospital transportation, according to officials. For the duration of the season, the rescue boat will be based on Canada Lake.

You are never too young or too old to want to help others.

Our NYS EMS system offers ed­ ucation and certification to ride on ambulances and help adminis­ ter care to members as young as 18 years of age. The youngest level of care begins with Certified First Responders; New York State requires a student of a CFR pro­ gram be at least 16 years of age by the last day of the month of the scheduled NYS-BEMS exam.

NYS Emergency Medical Techni­ cians must also take a state au­ thorized course and a student of an EMT program be at least 17 years of age by the last day of the month of the scheduled NYSBEMS exam.

Each level of certification has its own list of responsibilities.

CFRs can help by providing nec­ essary life-saving interventions while waiting for higher skilled providers, and they can assist EMTs and Paramedics during transport. Being a CFR allows the “younger generation” to feel pride in their vital contributions during emergencies as well as teaching and preparing them to move ahead to EMT or Para­ medic. The next step up is EMT. EMTs act under medical oversight. In addition to trans­ porting patients to hospitals, EMTs can perform CPR when necessary, and administer oxygen and glucose, and assist patients experiencing asthma attacks or allergic reactions. EMT-As (Ad­ vanced EMT) are also authorized to provide IV therapy, administer crucial medications, provide ad­ vanced airway interventions, and monitor cardiac rhythms with heart monitors. NYS does not often use the classification of EMT-Afor emergency transports.

Paramedics are often the high­ est trained field responders. To begin training as a NYS Para­ medic, you must hold a valid NYS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Paramedics need to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Techni­ cians (NREMT) Paramedic exam.

In the field and during transport.

Paramedics assess their patient’s condition and needs, administer emergency treatments and med­ ications, and can provide ad­ vanced life support using intubation and cardiac monitoring.

NYS ambulance drivers, also an integral part of EMS respon­ ders, need a NYS driver’s license, have a clean driving record, know CPR, and be able to assist in lift­ ing and moving patients. Many EMS squads also require CEVO training. CEVO is a national course taught in fire departments, ambulance services, and public safety agencies. The CEVO train­ ing helps drivers navigate emer­ gency transport safely and quickly.

While various volunteer agen­ cies and professional services can make their own rules and regula­ tions depending on their needs, all EMS professionals must refresh their certifications periodically and retain their physical abilities to perform their designated tasks.

Very often the involvement of youth leads to a lifelong commit­ ment to EMS and advanced train­ ing, and many paid and volunteer organizations do encourage youth squads and/or Explorer programs.

Find your local NYS accredited EMS training program through the NYS Department of Health web­ site.

All certification levels require regular recertification as well as maintaining other cognitive and physical skills to remain part of the Emergency Medical response system. NYS does not mandate re­ tirement or set any maximum age so long as certifications and physical/mental skills are maintained.

Firefighters Quickly Control Fuel Spill at Owasco Farm Incident OWASCO, NY - On April 17th, the Owasco Fire Department responded to a fuel spill caused by a farm machinery acci­ dent, initiating prompt actions to control and contain the in­ cident. Fire crews deployed containment barriers to prevent the spread of fuel, minimizing the potential impact on sur­ rounding land and waterways. Their quick actions helped sta­ bilize the scene and reduce environmental risk. Additional support was requested from the NYS DEC Spill Response team and OLWA inspectors, who responded to assist with mitigation efforts and further assessment of the spill.

HINSDALE VOLDNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Kitchen Fire Extinguished at Hinsdale Apartment Building HINSDALE, NY - Hinsdale Fire Department and mutual aid partners responded to a reported multiple occupancy struc­ ture fire on Roxboro Circle, May 13th. Upon arrival, Liverpool Car 2 confirmed light smoke from the structure with a minor kitchen fire. Hinsdale Engine 8, under the direction of Lt. Miller, arrived first due and established initial fireground op­ erations. Crews from Mattydale Fire Department and Liver­ pool Fire Department assisted on scene. Firefighters confirmed the fire was extinguished, completed ventilation of the affected apartment, and ensured the structure was safe before clearing the scene.

New Jersey: Julius Snyder, 55 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Feb. 1, 2020 Death Date: Oct. 27, 2025 Fire Department: Camden Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Julius Snyder responded to eight emergency calls while working a 24-hour shift from January 31, 2020, to February 1, 2020. Shortly after his shift ended, Firefighter Snyder suffered a med­ ical emergency. He was taken to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to a regional medical center for emergency surgery. After suffering prolonged complica­ tions from the medical emergency he suffered in 2020, Firefighter Snyder passed away on October 27, 2025.

Arkansas: Michael Z. Heithaus, 42 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: March 29, 2025 Death Date: March 30, 2025 Fire Department: Evansville Volunteer Fire

Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Michael Heithaus re­ sponded to an emergency medical call in the after­ noon o f March 29, 2025. The following morning, Firefighter Heithaus suffered a fatal cardiovascular event.

Ryan, 61 Rank: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Incident Date: Dec. 13,2025 Death Date: Dec. 13, 2025 Fire Department: Phoenicia Fire District Initial Summary: Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Michael Ryan was part of a crew that responded to a res­ cue call for an injured hiker. As the crew was carrying the hiker out of a wooded area, Firefighter/Fire Commis­ sioner Ryan suffered a cardiovascular event. Fellow first responders provided immediate lifesaving measures and transported Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pro­ nounced deceased. Firefighter/Fire Commissioner Ryan served the Phoenicia Fire District as both a firefighter and the District Fire Commissioner.

Virginia: Linzie "Scott" Collins, 50 Rank: Firefighter-EMT Incident Date: November 15,2025 Death Date: November 16, 2025 Fire Department: Richlands Fire-EMS Initial Summary: On November 15, 2025, FirefighterEMT Linzie Scott Collins was on duty from 10:00 a.m. until 6 p.m. During this shift, Firefighter-EMT Collins responded to two calls. The following day at 1:15 a.m., the wife of Firefighter-EMT Collins found him in dis­ tress. Firefighter-EMT Collins stopped breathing and CPR was performed. Firefighter-EMT Collins was trans­ ported to a local hospital where he was pronounced de­ ceased at 3:24 a.m.

Skid Steer Loader Fire D estroys Garage in S pringw ater SPRINGWATER, NY - On Thursday, May 21st at 6:44 p.m., Springwater, Sparta and Livonia (EAST) fire departments were dis­ patched to a skid-steer loader on fire inside of a detached garage at 7780 Wheaton Hill Road in Springwa­ ter.

While enroute, Springwater com­ mand reported heavy black smoke in the sky and re­ quested a second alarm, bringing an engine and ladder from Wayland and tankers from Hemlock and Richmond to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a heavily involved pole bam type structure, threatening a nearby home about 10 feet away.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the home, with it only sustaining minor damage.

There were no injuries re­ ported.

Also assisting at the scene were Livingston County EMS, Livingston County Emergency Management, Livingston County Sheriffs Office andNYSEG.

Second-Alarm Fire Tears Through Three-Story Residence in Walden WALDEN, NY - Walden FD responded to a reported structure fire at 15 Riverview Street on May 8th. Car One arrived to find heavy smoke and fire on the first floor of a threestory residence, spreading to the second floor.

A second alarm was requested, bringing mutual aid to the scene from Coldenham, Mont­ gomery, City of Newburgh, Wallkill, Maybrook, Vails Gate, Pine Bush, and Orange Lake.

A 10-minute status check re­ ported heavy fire on the first floor extending to the second floor, with two lines in operation. A 20minute check reported four lines in operation with heavy fire con­ ditions. At the 70-minute check, the fire was knocked down, though a partial collapse of the front of the residence was re­ ported. At the 90-minute check, the bulk of the fire had been knocked down, with multiple lines still operating.

Command requested NYSEG to the scene. One firefighter was transported to Garnet Eiealth Medical Center with burns. Or­ ange County Deputy Fire Coordi­ nator 36-12 and Ulster County Deputy Fire Coordinator 56-4 were also on scene.

Town of Montgomery EMS, Town of Newburgh EMS, Walden Police, and New York State Po­ lice assisted at the scene. Com­ mand also requested Orange County Fire Investigators to re­ spond; units 36-06 and 36-101 re­ sponded. Cronomer Valley and Washingtonville FD stood by for Walden during the incident.

The fire remains under inves­ tigation.

Driver A irlifted After Serious Crash in Bergen BERGEN, NY - The Bergen Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle collision with ejec­ tion at Pocock Road and Townline Road on April 6th. According to early reports, there was a baby inside the car. Before personnel could arrive, the child was taken away by a nearby bystander. The child was assessed and found to be in good health. Responders attested to the driver's severe injuries and ejection. After receiving on-site care, the patient was trans­ ported by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital. The Churchville Volunteer Fire Department served the district, and the LeRoy Fire Department provided mutual aid.

Two-Alarm C lifton Park Garage Fire Sends Flames 40-Feet in the Air CLIFTON PARK, NY - On March 31, 2026, at 6:52 PM, the Clifton Park Fire Department, along with mutual aid from the Hillcrest Fire Department, Halfmoon-Waterford Fire Department, Vischer Ferry Fire Department, Mechanicville Fire Department, and Jonesville Fire Department, responded to 1 Freeman Lane for a reported working structure fire called in by a fire chief.

The fire chief reported a wellinvolved commercial garage with two vehicles inside, with heavy fire shooting over 40 feet into the air despite heavy rain at the scene.

Heavy black smoke was visible from over a mile away. During heavy evening traffic on Route 146, vehicles slowed as they ap­ proached the scene, as drivers be­ came distracted by the large column of smoke and visible fire.

The first-arriving unit imme­ diately deployed a three-quarter handline from the front of the ap­ paratus and began an aggressive knockdown of the heavy fire con­ ditions in the garage. The chief on scene, with limited manpower, transmitted a second alarm, bring­ ing additional resources to the in­ cident.

Firefighters quickly arrived behind the first-due engine and es­ tablished a water supply. With heavy fire still inside the garage

and the roof having collapsed, firefighters continued aggressive efforts to bring the incident under control.

Firefighters encountered sig­ nificant challenges gaining access due to a vehicle fuel tank that had been breached, resulting in a freeflowing fuel fire. Crews continued to attack the fire in both vehicles and knock down remaining fire from the exterior of the structure.

As operations continued, se­ vere storms moved through the area, bringing lightning and heavy rain. Once the power to the build­ ing was secured, firefighters were able to fully extinguish the re­ maining fire. Crews then con­ ducted extensive overhaul of the heavily damaged garage.

Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period. No injuries were reported. The Saratoga County Fire Investiga­ tors arrived on scene and began working to determine the cause of the fire; however, no cause has been released at this time. Fire­ fighters returned to service later that evening.

AUBURN, NY - On April 26th, firefighters from Auburn Fire De­ partment responded to a reported structure fire involving a two-story, multi-unit residential building, ar­ riving quickly to find active fire conditions in the roof area.

EVANS MILLS, NY — April 30th — Sam Lundy, a longstanding sup­ porter of the local emergency services community, passed away, according to members of Pamelia Vol. Fire Dept. According to de­ partment representatives, Father Lundy frequently offered prayers, support, and community service to firefighters and first responders.

He was also renowned for his sense of humor and capacity to con­ sole people under trying circumstances. Over the years, firefighters said that his presence had a favorable effect on numerous mem­ bers, both on and off emergency scenes. The agency sent its sym­ pathies to his loved ones, friends, and neighbors who were impacted by his passing. Everyone in the area will remember Father Lundy's assistance and ties to the fire department.

Tanker Task Force Requested for Fayette Shed Fire FAYETTE, NY - On Saturday, May 16th at 4:35 p.m., Border City firefighters were dispatched to a shed fire with exposures on Marshall Road in the town of Fayette. Mutual aid was requested the scene from Geneva, as well as a tanker task force from Waterloo, Fayette, Varick, Romulus and Canoga fire departments. There were no injuries. Also responding to the scene were North Seneca Ambulance, Seneca County Emergency Mangement and the Seneca County Sheriff's Office.

Rescue and S pill Control Needed A fter Auburn Two-Car Crash AUBURN, NY - On May 4th, firefighters responded to a twovehicle collision involving a truck and a car, bringing mul­ tiple units to the scene to manage the incident. Upon arrival, crews found the truck had struck a tree, requiring both rescue operations and spill control measures. Fire­ fighters worked to secure the scene and mitigate hazards while assisting injured occupants. Ambulance crews trans­ ported the injured for further evaluation and care. Law en­ forcement and environmental response agencies were also on scene to assist with traffic control and spill mitigation.

All units remained on scene until the situation was stabi­ lized and operations were completed.

Hay Barn Catches Fire on Easter Sunday in Delmar DELMAR, NY - A fire broke out at a hay barn in Delmar on Easter Sunday.

Fire crews were called just be­ fore noon to 57 Van Dyke Rd in Delmar on Sunday, April 5th, for a report of a skid steer on fire inside a hay bam.

911 dispatchers stated the caller advised they were attempting to pull the skid steer outside the barn.

“When I got there, there was a skid steer on fire and probably 30 round bales of hay on fire, and it was melting half of the bowstring tmss tarp that was over that bam,” said Chief Dan Ryan of the Delmar Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to pre­ vent the fire from spreading to any neighboring stmctures.

“There was an equipment bam to the left, there was a cattle bam with approximately 190 cattle in­ side to the right,” said Ryan. “The fire didn’t spread to any of those and basically burned half of the bowstring tmss tarp.”

Fie said there were more round bales of hay in the rear of the hay bam that did not bum.

“Water supply was a big issue because we had to bring it in from the road,” Ryan said.

The first-arriving tmck con­ nected to the hydrant and laid a supply line up the driveway to the bam.

Ryan said approximately 800900 feet of supply line was used to bring water from the hydrant to the scene.

Fie said the road was closed for approximately two hours while crews operated on scene.

Firefighters spent a significant amount of time pulling apart the hay bales to fully extinguish the fire.

“Fortunately, the homeowner had a bucket attachment on the front of a tractor, so he was able to move the bales so they could be tom apart,” said Ryan.

Ryan said the cattle in the adja­ cent barn were not injured.

“Fortunately, the call came in through a milk tmck on site,” Ryan said. “Nobody was out there to see it, so the driver called the homeowner to let them know they might have an issue out here.”

Ryan said a few family mem­ bers on the farm were former mem­ bers of the department many years ago.

“The guy in the tractor was one of our members, so he knew what was going on,” he said.

There were no injuries reported to anyone on scene.

Assisting Delmar Fire were Slingerlands Fire, Town of Bethle­ hem FAST Team, Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, Albany County Paramedics, and Bethlehem Police.

During its Installation Dinner on April 17th, the Coeymans Hollow Vol. Fire Co. presented its 2025 Firefighter and Officer of the Year awards to members. In recognition of Patrick McCarthy's return to the department and his completion of three significant training courses in his first few months back, Chief Haight gave him the Firefighter of the Year award. His dedication and hard work stood out among members throughout the year, according to officials. Daniel Haight received the Officer of the Year award from Assistant Chief Williams for the second year in a row. His leadership, reaction activity, training involvement, and ongoing support of department operations and the community were acknowledged by members.

Lorrain e F ire Responds to R ollove r Crash in W orth LORRAINE, NY - The South Jefferson Rescue Squad and the Lorraine Volunteer Fire Company responded to a rollover car accident on Waite Road in the Town of Worth on April 24th.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered one overturned car. The injured driver was treated by EMTs. One male pa­ tient was sent by the South Jefferson Rescue Squad to Samaritan Medical Center for assessment. To secure the area, Lorraine Volunteer Fire Company members collabo­ rated with EMS and law enforcement, including the New York State Police and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, the Pamelia Vol. Fire Dept, honored the dispatchers who assist emergency operations across the community. Every April, the week serves as a reminder of the critical role dispatchers play in managing emergency calls, obtaining informa­ tion, allocating resources, and keeping in touch with field responders. During emergencies, telecom­ municators are frequently the initial point of contact and continue to assist teams during fire, emergency medical services, and law enforcement incidents. Dispatchers assist in maintaining re­ sponder safety while handling numerous calls and vital radio traffic, according to department offi­ cials. Mutual Aid Standby Escalates to Working Structure Fire Response for Genoa VFD GENOA, NY - On May 13th, Genoa Volunteer Fire Department initially responded by staffing its station to provide coverage for the Scipio, Venice, Long Hill Fire District during a reported possible structure fire on Ford Road.

As the incident rapidly escalated to a confirmed work­ ing fire. Long Hill Command re­ quested additional resources, prompt­ ing the response of Genoa Engine 1 to the scene.

Shortly thereafter, Genoa Tanker 1 was also requested for assignment to support water sup­ ply operations within the estab­ lished box alarm.

In total, Genoa Cars 1 and 4, Engine 1, and Tanker 1 operated on the incident or in standby/assignment roles.

All Genoa units completed their assignments and returned to service after operations were con­ cluded.

Officials said Platoon 1, staffed with eight firefight­ ers, responded to a single-family resi­ dential fire on Montcalm Avenue on April 24th. A few days later, on May 4th, a stmcture fire at a motel-style apartment building on Sailly Avenue was managed by Platoon 4, which was manned by seven firefighters.

In both incidents, firefighters quickly accounted for residents and conducted aggressive fire at­ tacks to limit further damage. The department reported that during their 24-hour shifts after both fires, crews continued to respond to EMS calls and other emergen­ cies.

East Herkimer Stops Roofline Fire HERKIMER, NY - On April 21 st, the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department arrived within three minutes of being called to a reported structure fire on Schrader Hill Road.

Crews promptly started suppression measures after dis­ covering flames along the rooftop close to the chim ­ ney area. By con­ trolling the fire, firefighters stopped it from spreading farther into the house.

In order to prevent more water damage to the homeowner's possessions, crews stayed on the scene to look for hot spots and carry out overhaul operations.

The Mohawk Valley Ambu­ lance Corps, Mohawk Fire D e­ partment, Newport Fire Company No. 4, and Middleville Fire D e­ partment all offered assistance.

The Town of Herkimer Codes Of­ fice, National Grid, and Herkimer County Emergency Services of­ fered additional assistance.

NEWBURGH, NY - Andrew DeGraw, past Chief of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 10th. He was 60-years-old. He was an inventory control spe­ cialist for Amthor Welding. He was also a life member and past Fire Chief of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department. He was also past President and Chief of the Orange County Volunteer Chiefs Asso­ ciation. Survivors include his fiancee Christina Dorrman; the mother of his children, Sharon DeGraw; children Tara, Robert Falco (Beacon), Erin and Chris DeGraw (Newburgh), and Evan and Allison DeGraw (Newburgh). Also surviving are his brothers William DeGraw and Matthew DeGraw, two grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Andy was transported to St. Francis Church in Newburgh, where a Mass was held. Final resting was at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Crews Contain Fully Involved UPS Truck Fire in Albany ALBANY, NY - Tri-Village Volunteer Fire Company, along with mutual aid departments and EMS, responded to a reported vehicle fire involving a UPS delivery truck on May 15th. Ar­ riving crews found the truck fully involved in fire. The oper­ ator had safely exited prior to arrival and removed most of the remaining packages, also confirming there were no haz­ ardous materials on board. First-arriving units quickly de­ ployed handlines and initiated an aggressive fire attack, bringing the blaze under control in a short time. Crews re­ mained on scene to complete extinguishment and ensure the area was safe before clearing.

According to the Angola Volunteer Fire Department, Norman Tolsma, a Life Member, passed away.

Tolsma held several leadership positions within the department, including President of the Benev­ olent Association, Chief of Department, and Fire Police Captain. He supported both operational and administrative activities over the years, helping to shape the organization's growth and direction.

His long-standing dedication to the department and his influence on generations of members were highlighted by officials. The department's operations and community visibility were shaped by his service.

At its training facility, the Vista Fire Department performed a "Pinned and Burning" scenario that focused on car wrecks involving fire and trapped occupants. Size-up, hazard control, vehicle stabilization, fire suppression, and coordinated extrication under timed conditions were all practiced by firefighters and EMS personnel. Crews handled access issues and fire conditions while deploying foam lines, packing patients, and performing vehicle lift methods. Alongside instructors from the Westchester County De­ partment of Emergency Services, participants included members of the South Salem Fire Department, Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, and New Canaan Fire Company No. 1.

Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held fo r New V ails Gate Firehouse VAILS GATE, NY - On Sat­ urday, May 18th, the Vails Gate Fire Department held a ribbon­ cutting ceremony for their new firehouse.

The New Windsor Supervisor and President of the Vails Gate Fire De­ partment welcomed everyone to the cer­ emony. An opening prayer was offered by the department chaplain. The flag was raised, and the Pledge of Alle­ giance was recited.

Stephen thanked all the mem­ bers who helped plan the build­ ing. The Chief of the Department explained that the taxpayers came through and voted in favor of the new facility. As the American flag was raised, the ribbon was cut.

Senator James Skoufis said a few words about the dedication of the members who respond to calls and expressed his admiration for the new firehouse.

Afterward, residents went in­ side and took a tour of the new firehouse. Children were treated to juice, cookies, and plastic fire hats.

Clinton Heights Firefighters Make Aggressive Knockdown on Townhouse Fire CLINTON HEIGHTS, NY - On April 14, 2026, at 6:48 PM, the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center began re­ ceiving multiple calls reporting a townhouse on lire at 63 Plaza Av­ enue in the Clinton Heights Fire Dis­ trict. As the incident was being dispatched, the center was handling numerous additional calls as a vio­ lent thunderstorm moved through the area, causing multiple downed power lines, fallen trees, and other emergencies throughout the county.

The Clinton Heights Fire De­ partment’s chief responded en route to the scene and requested the Defreestville Fire Department for their rapid intervention crew. The chief ar­ rived on scene with heavy lire and smoke showing from the front of the structure, with extension beginning to the second floor.

Truck 8 and Engine 8-5 arrived on scene and immediately went to work knocking down the heavy fire conditions at the front of the house.

Firefighters quickly laddered the front of the building, forced entry, and began a primary search. Engine 8-5 established a water supply at the end of the street, and as this was being completed. Rescue 9 and En­ gine 9-6 arrived on scene with the rapid intervention crew.

Firefighters continued working to extinguish fire that had extended into the second-floor area, and crews began pulling ceilings inside the

townhome. Command requested ad­ ditional resources from the East Greenbush Fire Department, which was operating nearby on a fire alarm.

Firefighters began pulling apart the front of the structure, exposing additional areas of fire extension.

Within six minutes of arrival, crews had the main body of fire knocked down. Interior crews confirmed that all occupants were out of the struc­ ture and that no one was home at the time.

Firefighters continued for an ex­ tended period conducting overhaul and extinguishing hotspots. Com­ mand requested the City of Rensse­ laer Fire Investigation Unit to the scene to determine the cause of the fire. During overhaul, firefighters were able to recover and preserve a family member’s American flag and safely remove it from the home be­ fore it was damaged.

Crews remained on scene for an extended period conducting interior and exterior overhaul operations be­ fore returning to service later in the evening. The fire remains under in­ vestigation, and the cause has not been released. No injuries have been reported.

When crews arrived, they discovered that the car was on fire and promptly used suppression lines to confine the situation and stop the flames from spreading. Firefighters stayed on the scene to finish extinguishment procedures and check the trailer and truck for extensions. No injuries were reported.

OWASCO, NY - On May 17th, Owasco Rescue responded to a two-vehicle MVA with reported in­ juries on East Lake Road. Owasco Car 1, Engine 3, and Rescue 1 were dispatched to the incident.

Patient care was managed by two Auburn City Ambulance units, with Fleming Squad assisting with traffic control to ensure scene safety and roadway flow. Crews coordinated efficiently on scene to support patient care and maintain safe operations for responders and the public.

Swearing-In Ceremony and Awards Dinner Held in Vails Gate VAILS GATE, NY - The Vails Gate Fire Department held their annual Swearing-In and Awards Dinner at the Vails Gate Firehouse on Saturday, May 16th. Steve Sager, Chairman oT the Fire Com­ missioners, served as master oT cere­ monies.

The leadership for the 2026-2027 term was sworn in during the Esopus Fire Department's annual of­ ficer installation banquet. Following elections earlier in the month, line and administrative officers, as well as Chief Mike Camuto and the command staff, were established. Members were also honored for their years of service, with milestones ranging from 5 to 50 years, such as 45 years for Ernie Osterhoudt and 50 years for Doug Lewis. The East Otto Fire Company and the Otto Volunteer Fire Company staged an annual combined Installation Dinner to honor members of the Ellicottville Volunteer Fire Department. Camper Fire Spreads to House and Garage in Caledonia CALEDONIA, NY - On Monday, May 12th at 3:27 p.m., firefighters from Caledonia, Mumford, Scottsville, East Avon (FAST) and CHS EMS were dis­ patched to a report of a camper on fire in the rear of 3181 East Avenue in the village of Caledo­ nia.

Upon arrival, units found the blaze had spread to a garage and house, also threaten­ ing another nearby home.

The fire quickly escalated to 3 alarms, bringing a large mutual aid response from Avon, Le Roy, York, Leicester/Cuylerville, Livonia, Bergen, Pavilion, Spencerport, Chili and Churchville fire departments.

Two birds were lost and sev­ eral cats were rescued by fire­ fighters.

The fire was declared under control in about an hour and there were no injuries reported. The oc­ cupants of the home were being assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the blaze re­ mains under investigation, but may have been caused by a camp­ fire that may not have been fully extinguished from earlier in the day.

Also assisting at the scene were Caledonia Police, Liv­ ingston County Emergency Management, Livingston County Sheriffs Office, New York State Police, New York State DEC, Na­ tional Grid and Rochester Gas and Electric.

BROADALBIN, NY - The Broadalbin-Kennyetto Fire Com­ pany responded to a reported brush fire along County Highway 107 in the Town of Broadalbin at around 3:42 p.m. on April 27th.

The Perth Volunteer Fire Com­ pany was sent out on automatic mu­ tual aid, according to officials.

Crews discovered that a neighbor­ ing wood pile had allegedly been set on fire by a lithium battery ex-

plosion. The incident was elevated to a structure fire response because of how close the fire was to a build­ ing.

While more tankers and brush units worked on the scene, firefight­ ers established a water supply oper­ ation with support from the

Hagaman Volunteer Fire Depart­ ment. Additionally, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was informed. Offi­ cials said the fire was contained be­ fore extending to the nearby building.

The department’s auxiliary and fire police units also assisted during the incident.

The Fredonia Fire Department celebrated its 125th anniversary and honored member accomplishments and years of service on May 10th with family, friends, and supporters. Ray Beach was recognized for 55 years of service, Larry Barter for 50 years, Craig Aldrich and Richard "Chico" Lascola for 45 years, Doug Essek for 35 years, Daniel "Chip" Riewaldt for 15 years, and Christina Ahrens and Tyler Bayles for 10 years. Robert Olmedo was named Firefighter of the Year, and Colton Boudreaux was named Top Responder. The department expressed gratitude to its members and supporters for contributing to the celebration of 125 years of community service.

GENEVA, NY - On Sunday, May 3rd at 12:45 p.m., Geneva fire­ fighters responded to a smoke investigation in the area of 16 Union Street in the city. Units arrived on location with a fire on the exterior of the structure, which was quickly extin­ guished. Also assisting at the scene were West Lake Road (FAST) and Mercy EMS. White Springs provided a stand-by at the city fire station. There were no injuries reported. CORTLAND, NY - The Cortlandville Fire Department re­ sponded to the intersection of Lighthouse Hill and Locust Av­ enue in the Town of Cortlandville for a reported vehicle fire on April 26th. When the Homer Police Department arrived first, they discovered a fully involved car fire. No injuries were reported as firefighters used suppression lines to put out the fire. The Cortland County Highway Department and the New York State Police also helped with roadway operations and traffic management.

Designing and Building Training Props IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

Building training props is part of firefighting. Whereas that is certainly a commonality be­ tween all departments the im­ plementation of what props are built and how they are built etc., varies considerably and is as unique as each depart­ ment. Defined training props are specialized structures that simulate conditions, obsta­ cles, and hazards of real-world emergencies.

Props can teach and reinforce essential skills like forcible entry, search/rescue, mask confidence, ventilation, and hose handling. Obviously, a number of factors influence prop construction.

These would include department fi­ nances, location (urban vs rural), the presence of a junior firefighting program and the types of calls to name a few.

The first and most important consideration when building training props is firefighter safety. This is non- negotiable.

N FPA 1400 is set to replace in­ dividual standards of 1402 and 1403 and do provide training safety guidance although they are more specific to live fire drills. Because safety is para­ mount there are several props that should be purchased (as opposed to building them) such as any gas emergency/hazmat simula­ tions, a forcible entry door and flashover/burn simulators to name a few. When talking about prop safety you must also consider placement and set up relative to safety hose lines and possibly having an EMT on site.

To start, building a prop where safety is arguably more vital would be a maze. Firefighters navigating a maze are typically blacked out (which simulates smokey conditions) and must crawl to safety through a se­ ries of narrow channels, turns and stairs while on air. They may also experience wires or other obstacles within the maze that can also cause anx­ iety.

A well-built maze will have in­ structors having access to fire­ fighters at all points throughout the maze. This is because mazes are frequently used in firefighter 1 courses and for junior firefighters.

Being inexperienced and more prone to needing guidance it is important that instructors be able to visually see, touch and talk to firefighters as they go through.

Props should also be relevant and purposeful for your de­ partment. There are some props that fit this description across the board such as an escape window or the afore­ mentioned maze. Another all­ purpose prop is the disentan­ glement box which is simply an 8 x 4-foot box with bars, wires and other obstacles throughout. In spite of the short distance, it is still an ex­ cellent method for teaching firefighters how to untangle themselves or not get tangled in the first place and not press the panic button.

With all that said there are also props that are relevant based on the types of calls your de­ partment typically gets and/or the types of structures that are in the community you serve.

For example, if your district has several office buildings constructing a Denver drill prop may be in order. Even if your district does not warrant this kind of prop a mutual aid district might so it’s important to coordinate with neighboring districts and departments.

Since any props are likely going to be built from the ground up that means that they can potentially be modi­ fied to allow to be more easily put together, taken apart and put away in storage. By all means if your department has the storage that is great. How­ ever, if space is going to be a problem, then again coordina­ tion is key. Combining the stor­ age issue and mutual aid one other point to consider is adding to any agreement would be the storage, access and use of any props. The first department I joined did not have a wall to train and qualify for bailouts but a neighboring district did and we routinely used that prop (as an aside New York State is the only

state that requires a bailout qualification).

The question then becomes how to obtain the materials for all the props you want to build.

If you are looking to buy new lumber financial approval may be the first step although most wooden props aren’t that ex­ pensive to build (under $300).

Consider asking for donations of materials as there may not be the need to buy. In my expe­ rience many local and chain hardware stores will jump at the chance to assist a local fire department full well knowing in the long run it also benefits them from a fire safety stand­ point but also from a public re­ lations angle as well.

Additionally, there are grants that will assist with purchasing new supplies the downside of which would be writing a grant application. Your town Dept of Public Works (DPW) may also be willing to donate a culvert tube for pack escape drills or as part of a mask confidence course. Don’t forget any online sites that advertise free sup­ plies - 1 literally have 50 pallets at my house being used in var­ ious capacities all of which I have gotten free from Facebook Marketplace or Craigs List and all of which could be re-purposed to build a training prop. Last but not least simply keep your eyes and ears open as some departments clean house and get rid of stored un­ used equipment as their needs evolve and change.

Deer Park FD Knocks Down Roof Fire Involving Solar Panels DEER PARK, NY - On Saturday, April 11th, the Deer Park Fire Department was activated for a reported house fire on Sharon Lane. 1-4-30 arrived on scene and observed smoke showing from the roof. North Babylon Ladder 6 arrived on scene, went to the roof, and discovered solar panels on fire. Deer Park Engine 7 arrived on scene, stretched a 1%-inch line, and began extinguishing the fire on the roof. The scene was placed under control within 30 minutes.

South Farmingdale Crews Respond to Overturned Vehicle SOUTH FARMINGDALE, NY - Members of the South Farmingdale Fire Department responded to an overturned car on James Street, April 25th. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered that the car was resting upside down.

They secured it so that workers could safely move around the incident site. Additionally, Nassau County Police arrived to help with both the investigation and traffic management.

Nassau County Police and a nearby towing company were tasked with up-righting and removing the vehicle when the scene was stabilized. Rainy weather, according to officials, made it more difficult for emergency personnel working on the scene.

Bohemia Firefighters Extinguish Early-Morning Car Fire BOHEMIA, NY - The Bohemia Fire Department was called to a reported vehicle fire on May 9th at around 3:45 a.m. Arriving chiefs saw a completely involved truck with flames spreading into surrounding bush, according to officials. Soon after, En­ gine 7 arrived and started suppression efforts by stretching a hoseline. Firefighters swiftly contained the fire and stopped it from spreading farther into the surrounding region.

The first-due engine crew stretched a hose line and began at­ tacking the fire, approaching the RV as additional units arrived to assist.

Firefighters from Engine 5-12-4 and Rescue 5-12-10 helped contain the blaze, which was quickly extin­ guished.

from Mastic Fire Department re­ sponded with multiple ambulances, along with Shirley Ambulance. One individual was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. No other in­ juries were reported.

The fire was placed under con­ trol within about an hour. Suffolk County Police Department and Mastic fire personnel remained on scene to direct traffic during the re­ sponse. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

LONG ISLA W antagh F ire D e p t. R esponds to W a te r R escue in Z a ch ’s Bay WANTAGH, NY - During a water rescue at Zach's Bay and the Third Bridge on May 8th, the Nas­ sau County Police Emergency Am­ bulance Bureau received assistance from the Wantagh Fire Dept. Ma­ rine Unit.

According to of­ ficials, the operator of a recreational boat was thrown from the seat and suffered a head in­ jury after the boat struck a sand bar.

Later on, the boat was caught on the sand bar.

Marine 31 launched with two Nassau County Police medics on board, and Chief of Department William Stevens took command at Wantagh Park. Rich Mongiello, the third assistant chief, oversaw com­ munications between land and maritime forces.

The patient was moved to a waiting ambulance for transporta­ tion to a nearby hospital with the help of Squad 1, Rescue 3, and EMS personnel.

YAPHANK, NY — On May 5th at approximately 8:00 PM, the Yaphank Fire Department was acti­ vated for a smoke investigation on East Main Street.

Chief 5-30-31 arrived on scene and discovered a large pile of mulch on fire, requesting the de­ partment’s brush trucks and Tower Ladder to respond. Brush 6 and Brush 3 arrived and immediately began fire attack operations. Tower Ladder 10 also responded, with

South Hempstead Firefighters Respond to Car Fire Near Peninsula Boulevard Ramp SOUTH HEMPSTEAD, NY On the approach connecting the eastbound Southern State Parkway to the northbound Peninsula Boulevard, the South Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department re­ sponded to a con­ firmed automobile fire on April 26th.

When firefighters ar­ rived on scene, they discovered a fully involved car and ac­ tivated Engine 742's hand line.

The fire was swiftly contained by crews, who also stopped it from spreading. Before firefighters ar­ rived, every passenger safely got out of the car, and no injuries were reported.

Bellport Firefighters Extinguish Commercial Property Debris Fire BELLPORT, NY - The Bellport Fire Department was called to Montauk Highway east of Station Road at around 1:24 p.m. on April 25th in response to a report of black smoke coming from behind a business structure. Arriving firefighters saw a pile of flaming pallets and other debris on top of a small fiberglass boat hull, according to officials. It took around 50 minutes for firefighters to put out the fire. Later, in order to allow workers to continue overhaul, the property owner fanned out the rubble pile using a backhoe. At around 2:51 p.m., the situation was resolved. The Suffolk County Police Department and South Country Ambulance both offered as­ sistance on scene.

Bobcat Fire Extinguished A fte r Crews Locate Hidden Blaze in Yaphank Woods On May 13th, the Yaphank Fire Department was activated for a reported bobcat fire on Lincoln Road. Unit 5-30-7 responded to the area but was ini­ tially unable to lo­ cate the machine and was redirected to a nearby brush fire.

While return­ ing from the brush fire, crews ob­ served heavy smoke coming from the woods and began investigat­ ing. They soon located the origi­ nal incident—a bobcat fully involved in fire.

Unit 5-30-6 arrived on scene, entered the trail, and began extin­ guishment operations. Shortly after, 5-30-8 arrived and supplied 5-30-6 with water while also stretching an additional handline to assist.

Crews worked efficiently to bring the fire under control, and all units returned to service within approximately one hour.

SEAFORD, NY - Ex-Chief Fred Roth was recently recognized by Seaford Fire Department members for his 78 years of service to the department and community. Roth began working for the agency in 1948 and rose through the ranks until becoming Chief of agency in 1964. Additionally, he spent many years serving as the Seaford Fire District's Fire Commissioner, assisting with de­ partmental operations and neighborhood fire safety initiatives. Ac­ cording to department officials, Roth is still the department historian and a valuable resource for information regarding the history of the Seaford community and the fire department. Accord­ ing to officials, generations of firemen in the department are still impacted by his dedication, leadership, and expertise.

At the Oceanside Fire Department training site, members of the South Hempstead Volunteer Fire Department, recently took part in practical training. Firefighters finished three hands-on exercises meant to mimic actual emergency situations that first responders encounter. Teamwork, communication, fireground operations, and general preparedness for emergencies were the main topics of the training. Members operated under regulated training conditions while working through a variety of scenarios. The exercise was a part of an active month of training, according to department offi­ cials, with the goal of preserving firefighter readiness and skills.

Additionally, officials expressed gratitude to the Oceanside Fire Department for organizing the event and encouraging ongoing col­ laboration with nearby emergency services in Nassau County.

4th Alarm Injures Several FDNY Members QUEENS, NY - Sunday, May 3rd was a busy day for New York’s Bravest with several multiple-alarm fires. Queens Box 7738 was transmitted shortly after 1500 for a multiple. First due arriving units quickly transmitted a second alarm and when several FDNY members fell through a floor, a 10-66 and eventually a 4th Alarm were transmitted. The injured mem­ bers were removed to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Fire Commissioner Bonsignore, Chief of Department Esposito and Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods were on scene. The cause of the fire is under inves­ tigation by the Bureau of Fire Investigation.

At a ceremony on Friday, April 20th, the City of New York Fire Department celebrated FDNY members who had completed the West Point Counterterrorism Leadership Program. Five-Alarm Queens House Fire Draws Massive FDNY Response QUEENS, NY - The FDNY responded to a reported fire at 107-55 130th Street in Queens just before 3:00 a.m. on April 30th.

An explosion connected to the fire caused minor injuries to a number of New York City Police Department officers who were re­ sponding to the site. The fivealarm incident prompted the response of almost 300 fire and emergency medical personnel.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The author has a colorful back­ ground beginning at an early age.

He has served as a volunteer and paid firefighter in the fire service and presently is a lieutenant in the Denver, Nebraska Fire Depart­ ment. The book features 350 sep­ arate firehouses, all of which were active when photographed.

Many are unique and historic.

The book also features interior and apparatus shots, some fire photography and some street scenes to illustrate the perspec­ tive of the neighborhoods in which they are. There are 22 chapters plus an index. The chap­ ters include West Coast Fire­

houses (a full chapter), and then separate chapters of San Fran­ cisco, Oakland, Los Angeles City and County. Separate chapters cover the Los Angeles City and County Fire Departments. County Station 127, which was the one that the television show “Emer­ gency” used, is in this book. A full chapter features Western U.S. Firehouses with separate chapters on Colorado firehouses and the Denver Fire Department. Two pages are dedicated to Midwest Firehouses, followed by full chap­ ters for Chicago, St. Louis and De­ troit. Chapters on Southern U.S. Firehouses, Florida Firehouses are next, followed by Eastern U.S. Firehouses, including Boston and Cambridge, MA., and Baltimore, MD. The District of Columbia takes up a chapter. There is a Fire­ house introduction for the FDNY featuring information about the five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Photos of stations in all but Staten Island are featured.

Four pages take up firehouses in Canada. All photos are color and of excellent quality. Many have apparatus in them but there is no information about the vehicles, as this is strictly a firehouse book. I have one lame remark to make and that is one of the New York City boroughs is named “The Bronx”, not just “Bronx”, but the author not being from New York is ex­ cused for not knowing this. For the price, this is an excellent book and the reader will be well pleased perusing over it.

Third-Alarm Bushwick Blaze Contained by Quick FDNY Response BROOKLYN, NY - A third alarm was needed for a fire in a row of occupied multiple dwellings with the fire originating at 247 Weirfield Street in the Bushwick section of the borough, May 8th.

Deputy Assistant Chief Tim Keenan credited first arriving companies Squad 252 and Ladder 112 with helping prevent the fire from spreading down the block. No injuries were reported and the FDNY Bureau of Fire Investigation are investigating the origin.

Chaplain’s Corner Didymus McHugh

I have gone to resiliency train­ ing, and they talk about having grat­ itude, but why do we need a program to learn how to appreciate things. I have heard that gratitude is basically appreciating the life that you have.

I know people who have gone through major events in life and then they learned to appreciate things. Why do some people need a major event? After I had my major event, I have learned to appreciate each morning and look at things a lot differently than when I did be­ fore.

Do you know how many times the Bible discusses that we need to be thankful? It's over one hundred fifty times. Psalm 107:21 states "Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind."

Have you noticed deer or other animals watching you as you are in the traffic?

Some of us need to be reminded that even our now is not promised and if we wake up tomorrow, it is definitely a gift from God. We may make plans for our life, but every­ thing can change in less than a heartbeat.

Have you even taken the time to

smell the head of a baby or really lis­ tened to children as they laughed or really listened to children as they laughed or really sat down and lis­ tened to the stories of someone else, especially those with much life expe­ rience or going through challenges.

There are many people that can appreciate having food and shelter.

James 1:17 states "Every good and perfect gift is from above, com­ ing down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

Many times, I think about sitting on a porch reading a good book and just enjoying a nice cup of tea and just watching the day unfold.

The story got to me of a woman who face flooding of a hurricane. In the shelter, she was surrounded by her family, and she had all that she needed in life.

There are people that I know that love foul weather. To them, they enjoy the smell and the sound of the rain falling and thunder and watching the lightning.

Is there something that you carry that is a reminder to appreciate things. Do you carry a picture of o loved one?

We may need reminders at times of how lucky we really are. We may not appreciate a situation as we are going through it but may look back later and say how that may have re­ ally changed our lives.

The FDNY celebrated 309 workers' milestone work anniversaries on May 6th in recognition of their decades of service to the city. Both civilian employees and uniformed personnel from within the de­ partment were acknowledged, according to officials. When taken as a whole, the honorees repre­ sented over 7,100 years of city service. In 2025, the department also honored FDNY personnel who pursued university degrees outside of work hours, recognizing their ongoing commitment to both professional and personal growth.
