You’ re called to a hom e that’ s brightly lit. You park the rig b e­ tw een layers o f cars. M usic is blasting as y ou enter. H alf the crow d o f young adults is still par­ tying. There is another group o f teens kneeling over a young male lying on the ground.

You m anage to push the crow d back a bit and kneel next to him, he is unresponsive to your touch, gurgling n ow and then, and you check his vitals. Respira­ tions are slow, his lips are bluish, and his pupils are pinpoint. A s y ou tell your partner to get the Narcan out, y ou ask the crow d if the victim has taken anything... there are lots o f shrugs. Your part­ ner hands y ou the Narcan nasal device and y ou administer it into one nostril.

The p o lice arrived, and the crow d has suddenly thinned. The m usic is turned off. Your partner brings the gurney in w hile you ask for m ore inform ation about the patient. Finally, som eone ad­ mits that a few people w ere using “recreational drugs”. You’ re ch eckin g his respirations again; the patient is still unconscious but breathing is b ecom in g more r eg­ ular. A s y ou ch eck his pulse, he gasps and wakes up suddenly and angrily.

“What happened?” he d e­ mands. “You were unconscious,” answers a crying teen. The patient utters a curse and com plains that he was just fine. You turn him on his side, and he angrily takes a m isgu id ed sw ing in your direc­ tion. Seeing the gurney, he slurs his words as he yells that he is not g o in g to the hospital. He strug­

gles as you place a nasal cannula on him.

D o y ou know where y ou are?

What is today? Can y ou tell me what happened to you? Glaring at you, he stum bles through his w ords as he tries to answer. “Sir, I think it’ s a w ise idea to g o to the hospital.”

A p o lice officer co m es over with a w allet in his hand. “H is friend ju st gave m e his ID. H e ’ s underage. Take him to the h osp i­ tal. W e’ ll arrange for his parents to m eet us there.”

Aside from som e loud, slurred curses, the trip to the hospital go es smoothly. You and your partner are relieved to hand him o f f to the E R staff.

On the way back to base, w hile y ou sit up front with your partner driving, y ou admit that this is the first time that y ou have ever personally administered Nar­ can, y o u ’ ve seen it done, and you were a bit nervous. But you knew that the Narcan w ou ld not hurt him, and supplemental ox ygen helps to return ox y gen to the brain. You also admit that the first thirty seconds after administering the spray, y ou were nervous until y ou saw som e sign o f him being revived.

A ll EM S rigs in N ew York State are able to request and carry Narcan on their rigs. It’ s u sed to counter the effects o f op ioid over­ doses from substances like heroin, morphine, codein e and more.

M ost B LS rigs carry Narcan as a nasal dosage, and it can take as lon g as 10 minutes for the effects to show; even after administering the drug, y ou must still assess and m onitor your patient. A lw ays m onitor respirations and pulse.

W hile y ou should not auto­ matically assume that your patient has overdosed, givin g that initial dose o f Narcan w ill not cause any harm. Although, do be careful, som e patients w ho are roused from an overdose may be aggres­ sive and even violent.

Funeral Services Held fo r Fallen Binghamton FF John “ JR” Gaudet BINGHAMTON, NY - On February 19th, hundreds of firefighters from across the region gathered at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Binghamton to pay their respects to fallen city firefighter, John "JR" Gaudet, 40. Gaudet was killed February 12th, after a wall fell on him while battling a 3-alarm fire on Main Street. Two other firefighters were also injured in the blaze. He was an 11year veteran of the BFD, assigned to the Heavy Rescue Squad. JR is survived by his wife, Felly, their three children Charles, Vanessa and Michael, his parents and sister, Katie.

MVA with Rollover & Entrapment in New Windsor

NEW WINDSOR, NY - Vails Gate FD responded to a two-vehicle MVA with rollover and entrapment at 635 Little Britain Road on March 11th. New Windsor Police and EMS were at the scene.

Town of Newburgh Police blocked off Little Britain Road at Old Little Britain Road. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extri­ cate the driver from the vehicle that was on its side. New Wind­ sor EMS transported the driver to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital. Police were interviewing witnesses at the scene.

After tow trucks removed the vehicles, the roadway was re­ opened.

2nd Alarm Fatal House Fire in Florida FLORIDA, NY - At approximately 9:30 P.M. on February 28th, the Washingtonvilie Fire Department was dispatched as the FAST (to relieve another FAST) to a 2nd alarm house fire in the Florida Fire District. Squad 580 responded. Upon arrival, the crew of Squad 580, the FAST, after the completion of a 360degree survey, stood-by in front of the building. One occupant of the building was pronounced dead at the scene. The fire is currently under investigation by the Town of Warwick Police Department and Orange County Fire Investigators.

F ire fig h te rs Respond to Basem ent Fire in Rush RUSH, NY - Shortly before noon on Friday, February 7th, fire­ fighters responded to a basement fire at 8788 West Henrietta Road in Rush. A working fire was declared, and due to a lack of hydrants in the area, numerous mutual aid departments responded with tankers from Monroe, Livingston and On­ tario counties. There were no injuries reported, and at least one cat was rescued from the home. The cause of the blaze was under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau.

Two Firefighters Fall Through Floor at 2nd Alarm in North Greenbush NORTH GREENBUSH, NY On March 7th at 10:44 P.M., the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center began tak­ ing multiple calls for a reported house on fire at the intersection o f Lakeshore Drive and Persing Av­ enue in the Town o f North Green­ bush.

The Wynantskill FD, Defreestville FD, Mountain View Fire Co. for the FAST, and North Greenbush Ambulance were dis­ patched to the scene.

Wynantskill Cars 1 and 2, along with Defreestville Cars 1, 2 and 3 called en route to the scene.

The dispatcher notified all chiefs that they were receiving multiple calls on the working fire, and that there was possible entrapment.

Wynantskill Car 1 came on the air and immediately requested the sec­ ond-alarm to be transmitted. The second-alarm brought Averill Park FD, East Greenbush FD, Poestenkill FD, West Sand Lake FD, Eagle Mills FD and Menands FD for a cover assignment for the Town o f North Greenbush.

The first arriving police unit on scene immediately notified the dis­ patcher that they had heavy fire showing from the house.

Wynantskill Car 2 arrived on scene and notified the dispatcher that they had a working structure fire with heavy fire showing. The chief o f the Wynantskill FD arrived on scene and notified the dispatcher that they had possible entrapment inside o f the building, and to have all fire chiefs responding to the scene stay o ff the radio. Within a few minutes o f the initial dispatch.

Engines 42-7, 9-7, 21-1, 9-6, Truck 42, Rescue 42, and Rescue 9 called en route to the scene. As fire units were responding to the scene, heavy fire blew through the front o f the structure, out the back o f the structure, and our o f every window.

The fire could be seen from all sides o f the lake. Once Engine 427 arrived on scene, firefighters jum ped o ff the rig and began de­ ploying a one-and-three-quarterinch hand line to the front door.

Firefighters began to conduct an ag­ gressive push to get in the front door o f the structure, as there was a report o f entrapment.

As multiple engines quickly began arriving on scene, firefighters began deploying several hand lines and crews quickly began to estab­ lish a water supply by a nearby hy­ drant. Rensselaer County's medical director, MD-388, arrived on scene as there was a report o f entrapment.

Firefighters made a push inside o f the structure and began knocking down the heavy fire condition. Fire­ fighters on the exterior portion o f the structure in the rear o f the build­ ing began to knock down the visi­ ble fire there. Within minutes, the

heavy fire condition was knocked down. As Mountain View F D ’ s FAST arrived on scene, firefighters deployed to the front o f the build­ ing, but command put them in serv­ ice as part o f the attack crew.

Firefighters made their way to the front door o f the structure as addi­ tional crews began to ladder all sides o f the building. Command was able to confirm the address was 68 Lakeshore Drive.

Firefighters deployed another hand line and made their way through the front window o f the structure to begin knocking down some o f the heavy fire condition still remaining inside o f the house.

Both sides o f Lakeshore Drive were completely shut down by fire apparatus. As firefighters were working inside o f the building, crews were hitting the heavy fire in the roof area. Firefighters inside of the structure were able to conduct a primary search and confirm that no­ body was inside o f the building. As firefighters continued to work in­ side o f the structure, two firefight­ ers fell through the floor o f that building. Other firefighters inside the structure assisted getting the two firefighters out o f the building safely without injury. Command immediately transmitted the all out to go defensive on the building.

The two firefighters that fell through the floor were checked out by the professional staff o f the North Greenbush Ambulance and Sand Lake Ambulance in the rehab area. Firefighters continued to knock down all o f the remaining fire. After a short period o f time, firefighters made their way back in­ side o f the structure but sounded the floor throughout the structure to make sure it was safe for other fire­ fighters to continue to work inside the building. As firefighters made their way back inside, they were able to get the remaining fire in the attic area and in the rooms. Fire­ fighters on the exterior portion o f the building utilized ladders and hand lines to hit the remaining fire and knocked down any remaining hotspots.

The North Greenbush Police Department is currently investigat­ ing the cause o f the fire. No one was home at the time o f the fire.

Both firefighters that fell through the floor were okay and went back to work on the fire grounds a short time after getting evaluated. Fire­ fighters remained on scene until the late hours o f the evening picking up from the fire.

One Transported from MVA on Route 17K in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Town of Newburgh Police and EMS re­ sponded to a PIAA on State Route 17K/Stewart Ave. on March 5th. Police requested Good Will FD for traffic assistance and to clean up fluids on the roadway. Town of Newburgh EMS transported one subject to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital.

Firefighters spread speedy dry on the fluids, and Town of Newburgh Police are investigating the cause.

House fire on Mechanic Street in Seneca Falls.

Firefighting efforts were hampered by a dead hydrant in front o f the structure.

Canoga firefighters provided manpower to the scene and a stand­

by crew at the Seneca Falls fire sta­ tion. Also assisting were North Seneca Ambulance, Seneca Falls Po­ lice andNYSEG. Officials from the Seneca County Fire Investigation Team were working to determine the cause.

There were no injuries reported.

The ch ief from the Defreestville FD notified the dispatcher that he had a heavy black column o f smoke showing in the distance and the ch ief re­ quested the alarm to be re-transmitted as a working structure fire.

D efreestville’ s ch ief arrived on scene and had a two-and-a-halfstory townhouse structure with exposure issues and heavy fire and smoke showing from the Delta side o f the building, and re­ quested the second-alarm to be transmitted. Within minutes o f the initial dispatch. Engine 9-7 called en route to the scene. The chief on scene was able to confirm that everybody inside o f the structure evacuated safely.

The Menands FD, Best Luther FD, East Greenbush FD, M oun­ tain View FD, and City o f Rensse­ laer FD were dispatched to the scene on the second-alarm. Within minutes. Engine 9-7 arrived on scene and firefighters im m edi­ ately began to deploy multiple hand lines from the first due en­ gine. Firefighters also connected to the nearby hydrant on scene, es­ tablishing a water supply. Fire­ fighters were not able to make entry to the structure due to the heavily involved lightweight con ­ struction building that already had partial structural collapse. Fire­ fighters utilized one hand line on the side o f the building and a twoand-a-half-inch hand line in the front o f the structure. As firefight­ ers were working on scene to knock down the heavy fire condi­ tion on the Delta side o f the struc­ ture, the first due truck company out o f Wynantskill arrived on scene and began to set up in the front o f the building.

Additional resources from mutual aid com panies quickly began to arrive on scene and fire­ fighters made their way into the neighboring house with multiple hand lines, as they had a heavy smoke condition pushing from the roof o f the structure. At about 15 minutes into the incident, the roof o f the structure on the main fire building collapsed into the main portion o f the home and into the garage area. Firefighters from the city o f Rensselaer set up in the roadway with their truck company and made their way to the r oof to begin venting above the neigh­ bor's townhouse, as they had smoke pushing from the eaves.

terior portion o f the structure to knock down the heavy fire condi­ tion, quickly changing the thick black colum n o f smoke to gray and white.

As firefighters continued to work on the Delta side o f the structure, the truck company was able to establish a water supply and went into master stream oper­ ations, knocking down a signifi­ cant portion o f the heavy fire in the roof area. As firefighters con ­ tinued to work in the front o f the structure, over 50 firefighters staged waiting to go to work. Fire­ fighters inside o f the secondary exposure townhouse deployed sal­ vage tarps inside o f the home as they began to pull apart the ceiling to get at the fire condition that had spread into the adjacent townhouse from the main fire building.

As firefighters continued to work, police units on scene were able to successfully evacuate all o f the residents in the townhouses around the main fire building, and were able to make sure that all o f the residents pulled their vehicles out o f their garages.

The West Albany FD from the Town o f Colonie was placed in the Defreestville FD for a standby as firefighters were working on scene. Firefighters on the Delta side o f the structure utilized a hand line to be able to make their way into an area where there was still a significant amount o f fire and knocked it down. Firefighters utilized a K-12 to cut open the h ood o f the car in the garage to gain access to the battery, as the r oof o f the building had collapsed onto the vehicle. The truck com ­ pany shut dow n their master stream operation and allowed for command and firefighters to get a better look at what they still had remaining. Comm and requested fire investigators and national grid to the scene.

The West Sand Lake FD was relocated to the Best Luther FD for a standby. Firefighters contin­ ued to work on scene for over three hours. N o injuries were re­ ported and all o f the occupants in the main fire building were ac­ counted for. Firefighters had the entire incident under control in less than 50 minutes due to their rapid response to the scene.

Firefighters worked on scene with the fire investigation team to assist with their needs and re­ mained on scene for three hours conducting overhaul. At this time, no determination in regard to the cause o f the fire has been released to the public.

O ff Duty F ire fig h te rs S pring In to A c tio n , E vacuating R esidents fro m A p a rtm e n t B u ild in g F ire in Troy TROY, NY - On February 2nd, Troy Firefighter Matt Fusco and Lieutenant Conor Patenaude were leaving their building at the Stoneledge Terrace Apartments to attend the Troy Fire Department Collar City Classic hockey game at the RPI Flouston Field house when they noticed smoke coming from the other side o f the building.

Investigating further, they discov­ ered a lire on the porch o f a thirdfloor apartment and immediately sprang into action. One firefighter rushed to grab a fire extinguisher while the other began evacuating the building. As they worked, mul­ tiple calls were being made to the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center reporting the fire. At 2:23 P.M., the dis­ patcher dropped the alarm o f fire tones, bringing Engine 1 in as a spare rig. Truck 1, Engine 4, En­ gine 2, the rescue squad. Truck 2, Medic 4 and the battalion chief to the scene. As units were in route to the scene, Lt. Conor Patenaude at­ tempted to knock the fire down on the porch, but the flames had got ahead o f him and into the attic area, and he was forced to back out o f the building.

Engine 1 arrived on scene and immediately transmitted the Sig­ nal 30 for a working structure fire, as they had heavy fire showing from the front o f the building with heavy smoke pushing from the roof area. Engine l ’ s crew imme­ diately deployed a garden lay to the front o f the building and was met with the firefighters that helped evacuate the structure and notified them that everyone was out o f the building. The battalion chief arrived on scene and due to the size o f the structure, transmit­ ted the second-alarm, bringing the City o f Cohoes FD, Engine 6 from the City o f Troy, and Watervliet Arsenal FD to the scene.

Engine l's pump operator con­ nected to the hydrant nearby as firefighters were making the stretch inside o f the apartment building to attempt to make it to the third-floor to knock down the fire. As firefighters made it to the main fire floor, they requested multiple times the line to be charged, as they had heavy fire and smoke on the third-floor o f the structure. Engine 1, a spare piece o f apparatus that is over 25-yearsold and was placed into service due to multiple mechanical mal­ functions on the current Engine 1, was experiencing pump failure.

Firefighters connected to Truck 1 on scene, established a water sup­ ply with them and connected the garden lay to the truck company.

Engine l ’ s pump operator took over running Truck 1, allowing for those firefighters to make their way to the roof o f the structure.

Engine 4 established another water supply nearby as firefighters deployed another garden lay to the

front o f the building. As they were doing so, members from the rescue squad began to conduct a search o f the building along with additional members from Engine 2. Firefight­ ers had heavy smoke pushing from the r oof area o f the building, and the truck company's crew was not able to access the roof due to the icy conditions. Command, seeing con­ ditions rapidly changing, ordered the evacuation tones until firefight­ ers could establish a water supply.

The Watervliet Arsenal FD and City o f Cohoes FD arrived on scene and the Watervliet Arsenal F D ’ s truck company went to work setting up on the side o f building 13.

As firefighters were able to get the water supply established and lines charged, they began to knock down the heavy fire condition on the exterior portion o f the structure.

Firefighters from the truck com ­ pany opened up one o f the side vents on the building and utilized a master stream across the roof inside o f the structure, quickly knocking down the fire that had extended into the structure from the fire on the ex­ terior portion o f the building. Fire­ fighters on the third-floor were able to bring the fire under control after their water supply was established.

As firefighters made their way out­ side, they began to exchange their air bottles, but due to the freezing cold temperatures, the quick re­ leases on the air packs would not work and had to utilize the exhaust on the apparatus to free up the

Within 30 minutes, firefighters had the entire incident under con ­ trol. Fire investigators are working to determine the cause o f the fire.

No injuries were reported. Numer­ ous residences inside o f the apart­ ment building were displaced from

the fire. Thanks to Firefighter Fusco and Lieutenant Patenaude’ s swift actions and their efforts to ensure that all residents safely evacuated, they prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy. By the time the Troy FD arrived on scene, the immediate danger had been minimized, allowing firefighters to focus on containing the fire before it could extend to the second-floor o f the structure. Their quick think­

ing and bravery not only saved countless lives, but also prevented serious injuries among the resi­ dents. The action o f these individu­ als serves as a testament o f the dedication these firefighters, both on duty and o ff duty, provide that protect their communities every day.

So why is it that you do what you do?

Years ago, I asked my father why he joined the fire service. My father was working two full time jobs and made time for the fire service. He told me that he needed to do something to get him away from his wife.

I would later think o f why I joined the fire service and realized that for me, it was a way to get to know my father. Yes, later I joined EMS so that I could help people who may have been getting closer to their end o f life.

I have heard people who said that emergency responders joined so that they could get in the news­ paper. I will admit that some emer­ gency responders find a way to be in the headlines or trying to control organizations, because they want to be in control or their personality had to be fed at all time.

I learned, from my uncles who raised me, I was a firefighter to help people. I was not into it to be in the paper or for any glory. I did the work and that was it.

I have seen many who wanted to be paid for their fire service but the people that I respect were the unpaid professionals, who shared their experience and knowledge. I know and have met many people that shared their knowledge for free. One o f the things that stand out in my memories was when I was taking my Haz-Mat Technician course. We had a student sitting taking the course and they had a nu­ clear physicist teaching the chem­ istry part o f the course. The physicist went teaching the course but he was incorrect on his infor­ mation. A gentleman in the class kept correcting the instructor. You could see that the instructor did not like that he was corrected. He looked at the person correcting him and said "if you think you know more than I know, you get up here and you teach the class." When the man came up to the front, the in­ structor asked him who he thinks he was. The gentleman politely intro­ duced himself as having a doctorate in chemistry and he was able to rat­ tle o f chemical facts like me recit­ ing the alphabet. Did he join Haz-Mat to prove himself to an in­ structor? No, he found a place where he can use his expertise to help others.

I have noticed emergency re­ sponders who are in emergency serv­ ices for the rank. They tell you that you need to respect them because they have the horns, but they have no right to even talk with people be­ cause they have no subject matter knowledge or how to deal with any person.

People go through some experi­ ences that make them humble. I know a person who survived a backdraft and now he teaches the fire service and stresses safety and the difference that fire gear can make.

People do work many times for free because they want to help peo­ ple just for the sake o f assisting peo­ ple.

As I was working with disasters and supervising people, I came across people who decided to bring a scrapbook with them to show how important they were. These people were sent home because it was obvi­ ous that they did not have the heart to help people but to build their re­ sume.

There are many people who are in emergency services to build their resumes also but the people who are really respected are those who give from their hearts. One o f the people that I respect and that is respected by so many people gives from himself and shares his knowledge.

The one thing that gets me is when someone is asked to speak.

They may say that they don't really know that much about the subject matter but they are really the subject matter expert. I always find it amaz­ ing that the people that have humility may really be the smartest person in the room.

I love the story that a friend con­ veyed to me. He was at a party with his cousin, a beautiful woman that could pass for a model. A gentleman was expressing a challenge that he was having with a particular Apple product. The woman expressed that she may be able to assist and the man dismissed her as just a pretty dumb woman. Do you think that he was surprised when he found out that she was in charge o f the think tank for Apple?

So doing a reality check, why do you do what you do? Is it to be a ser­ vant or do you do it so that others will serve you? You can still serve others and enjoy yourself.

I think we know a person that was here to serve His fellow man to the point o f the supreme sacrifice. If you don't know Him and want to, I can help with the introduction.

Pickup Truck Vs. M otorcycle MVA w ith Serious Injuries in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - City of Newburgh FD responded to a pickup truck vs. motorcycle MVA with serious injuries at Lib­ erty Street and Third Street on March 11th. City of Newburgh Police requested Empress EMS to the scene. Firefighters as­ sisted with injured parties and spread speedy dry on fluids on the roadway. Empress EMS transported two subjects from the motorcycle to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital. Police taped the area off and requested an outside agency for acci­ dent reconstruction. New York State Police and BCI Investi­ gator were at the scene. The accident is under investigation

by City of Newburgh Police. The condition of the injured sub­ jects is unknown.

M ultiple Calls for Heavy Fire in Garage on Delaware Ave. in Albany ALBANY, NY - On January 30th at 11:11 P.M., the city o f A l­ bany's dispatch center began to take multiple calls for a reported structure fire at 300 Delaware Av­ enue. The caller reported the back building behind the restaurant to be on fire. Engine 9, Truck 4, R es­ cue 9, Engine 5, Truck 1, Mohawk Ambulance Service, and the bat­ talion chief called en route to the scene. As Truck 4 pulled out o f the station, they notified the dis­ patcher that they had smoke show­ ing from the fire house.

Truck 4 arrived on scene and had a large garage behind the Delaware Avenue Restaurant heavily involved. Truck 4 trans­ mitted the Signal 30 for a working structure fire and notified the dis­ patcher that it was goin g to be a defensive operation at that time.

hand lines to the front o f the struc­ ture as the pump operator set up the master stream. Firefighters laid in to the scene with a supply line to Truck 4 and Engine 9. Fire­ fighters on scene began to conduct suppression efforts to knock down the heavy fire condition inside o f the garage.

The battalion chief arrived on scene and Truck 4 turned over command to the battalion chief and gave him a full report on the incident. Comm and notified all fire units on scene that there was a potential hazard o f solar panels on the roof. As firefighters were conducting suppression efforts, a significant portion o f the Delta wall fractured and began to lean outward. Command set up a c o l­

lapse zone around the garage, and firefighters continued to knock down the heavy fire condition with master streams and hand lines. The extremely cold temper­ atures hovering around 10°F cre­ ated a very slippery scene, as everything the water touched in­ stantly froze and turned to a sheet o f ice.

Firefighters on scene contin­ ued for an extended period o f time knocking down the heavy fire con­ dition. After all o f the heavy fire was knocked down, firefighters conducted extensive overhaul o f the badly damaged building. Fire Investigators on scene began to conduct their investigation into what caused the fire. No injuries were reported, and the fire was placed under control in about one hour.

Apartment fire in Delmar quickly contained.

Unattended Candle Sparks Apartment Fire in Delmar DELMAR, NY - A candle left burning on a table sparked an apartment fire in Delmar in early January.

Fire crews were called to 306 Catlyn Ct at the Adams Station Apartment Com plex in Delmar at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 4th, for a report o f a structure fire.

Further details aired over the radio indicated possible entrapment o f one o f the occupants.

“We had heavy black smoke in the hallway com ing from the second-floor,” said C h ief Dan Ryan o f the Delmar Fire Depart­ ment. “There are four apartments on the second-floor.”Fie said one apartment appeared to be fullycharged with thick smoke.

Firefighters geared up and were met with heavy smoke from one o f the apartments with a fire condition that was extinguished with a minimal amount o f water.

A tenant that ran back to save their cat began yelling that they were trapped, according to Ryan.

Fie said he went in to help assist her back out upon his arrival. The cat that the homeowner was searching for was later rescued by firefighters and brought outside to the owner.

Ryan said the apartment where the fire originated was un­ occu pied at the time o f the fire.

The fire apartment sustained sig ­ nificant damage, however, Ryan said the other apartments only suf­ fered smoke damage and minor water damage.

Ryan said the fire began after a candle was left burning on the kitchen table inside the apartment after the tenant had left the resi­ dence. Fie said it was a candle in a glass jar designed to be burned on a stovetop that was left burning on the kitchen table. The glass eventually heated up enough to char the table and spark the fire.

The fire was out in less than 15 minutes.

Delmar and Slingerlands fire departments responded to the scene, with members o f Elsmere and Selkirk fire departments re­ sponding as the Town o f Bethle­ hem FAST Team.

A lso on scene were DelmarBethlehem EMS, Albany County Paramedics and Bethlehem P o­ lice.

There were no injuries re­ ported on scene.

On arrival, heavy brown smoke was visible from the roof eaves, roof ridge line and gable end vents, however no flames were immedi­ ately visible from the exterior. The initial fire attack crew from Engine 7, led by Captain Turton, deployed a one-and-three-quarter-inch hose line and entered the home via the front door into the first-floor and began a search for the fire. Once through the first room o f the firstfloor, heavy fire was encountered in

Simultaneously, a second crew entered and went to the second-floor to check for exten­ sion and encountered heavy fire di­ rectly above the area o f the kitchen where it had burned through the floor. A third crew ruled out exten­ sion into the basement area with the use o f thermal imaging cameras.

A third and fourth hose line were deployed during the course o f extinguishment, one to the attic space and the other as a safety line.

Extensive overhaul was required between the first and second floor, as well as between the second-floor and attic. Approximately 3900-gal-

lons o f water were used during ex­ tinguishment and overhaul. Fire damage was kept to the rear portion o f the structure, but affected both floors and the attic space o f that area.

The fire was brought under control within 90 minutes o f LFD arrival, and suppression crews were complete within four hours. Occu­ pants were not home at the time o f the fire. No civilian or firefighter in­ juries were reported during this in­ cident.

Unfortunately, although lo­ cated, two family dogs perished as a result o f the heavy smoke throughout the home.

Albany Firefighters making a push into the first-floor after a report of a person still in the building.

Albany Firefighters Battle Basement Fire on Northern Blvd.

ALBANY, NY - On February 15th at 7:15 P.M., the city o f A l­ bany’ s Emergency Communication Center received a transfer call for a reported structure fire from the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center at 263 Northern Boulevard. Engine 2, Res­ cue 2, Truck 2, Engine 1, the rescue squad. Engine 5, Mohawk Ambu­ lance Service and the battalion chief responded to the scene. The caller reported a possible basement fire and that there was a language bar­ rier.

With Arbor Hills Firehouse di­ rectly around the comer from the in­ cident, firefighters quickly arrived on scene with smoke showing from the basement o f the building and transmitted the Signal 30 for a working structure fire. Engine 2’ s crew pulled a hand line to the front o f the building, deployed it into the front o f the house and attempted to locate the door leading to the base­ ment. As firefighters conducted a primary search o f the building, they learned that they had to pull out o f the building and make their way around the side, as the only en­ tranceway to the basement was in the rear o f the structure. As firefight­ ers made their way down into the basement, they had heavy smoke pushing out o f the doorway with ex­ treme heat down in the basement and visibility near zero.

Command requested a m e­ chanic to respond to the scene, as they were having problems with one o f the primary engines, and re­ quested an additional engine to the scene. Command requested fire­ fighters on the exterior portion o f the stmcture to begin to vent the windows as firefighters in the base­ ment had zero visibility and high

temperatures. Command was noti­ fied by the police department that there was possible entrapment still inside o f the building. Firefighters quickly made their way to the sec­ ond-floor o f the building and contin­ ued to search the first-floor while firefighters in the basement contin­ ued to push towards the seat o f the fire.

Firefighters in the basement re­ quested the line to be charged and the pressure to be increased. As fire­ fighters were continuing to push deeper into the basement, heavy fire blew out the windows o f the struc­ ture from the basement windows.

Firefighters opened up the hand line inside o f the structure and began to knock down some o f the super­ heated gases to prevent the smoke from igniting. Command on the ex­ terior portion o f the structure noti­ fied them that they had good fire showing still from the exterior por­ tion o f the structure from the AlphaDelta side. Firefighters in the basement continued to make an ag­ gressive push towards the seat o f the fire. Firefighters on the first-floor notified command that they had a hole that had burned through the floor. Firefighters continued to make an aggressive push in the basement even though they had zero visibility and heavy fire still pushing from the basement windows.

Command notified the interior crew that conditions were continu­ ing to deteriorate from the exterior portion o f the structure, and that he now had heavy fire showing from the Bravo side windows o f the base­ ment. Firefighters in the basement

notified command that it had be­ come extremely hot, and command notified them that if they were not making any progress in the next two minutes, they were pulling them from the structure. Firefighters on the first-floor and second-floor noti­ fied command that everybody was out o f the structure and the search was negative. Command checked on the firefighters in the basement and notified them to evacuate the structure, as they were going to hit it from the windows from the exte­ rior portion o f the structure. Fire­ fighters quickly regrouped in the rear o f the structure and notified command that they were all out o f the building.

A par check was conducted, and firefighters utilized hand lines from the exterior portion o f the structure and knocked down the heavy fire in the basement. As soon as firefighters had the fire knocked down from the exterior portion o f the structure and conditions became more favorable, firefighters made their way down into the basement and finished knocking down all o f the remaining fire. Firefighters made their way in­ side o f the structure and conducted a secondary search o f the building, making sure there was no one in­ side. Firefighters in the basement began to conduct extensive over­ haul, as the heavy fire condition caused significant damage.

The police department on scene conducted their investigation into the fire by interviewing multiple residents from the building. No in­ juries were reported, and firefighters remained on scene for an extended period o f time.

Barn Fire on Plains Road in Walden WALDEN, NY - Walden FD responded around 10:30 P.M. Thursday night, February 27th, to a reported barn fire at 127 Plains Road. Walden Command arrived and advised 911 of a working fire and to resound home alerts for all available manpower. Mutual Aid to the scene included Coldenham Engine/Tanker; Wallkill Pumper; Orange Lake Pumper; Air Na­ tional Guard Tanker; Plattekill Tanker; and Cronomer Valley Engine to fill site. Town of Montgomery EMS transported a burn victim to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital. Firefighters used hand lines to knock the fire down. A ladder was set up and sprayed water on the fire. Deputy Fire Coordinator 3612 and Town of Montgomery Police were at the scene.

Tankers were stationed on Plains Road and dumped into a portable tank set up. The fire is under investigation.

M ultiple Vehicles Catch Fire in Coldenham Auto Auction Lot COLDENHAM, NY - Coldenham FD responded to 39 Stone Castle Road on February 20th for reports of multiple vehicles on fire. Coldenham Command requested mutual aid to the scene which included Walden and Air National Guard. The total number of vehicles involved was 10. Firefighters used hand lines to extinguish the fires. One firefighter fell on ice and was transported by Town of Montgomery EMS. Deputy Orange County Fire Coordinator 36-12 was also at the scene.

Truck Fire Extends to Brush Fire in M anorville MANORVILLE, NY - On Sunday, March 2nd, the Manorville Fire Department was activated for a reported truck fire on the Long Island Expressway, just past Exit 70. (5-16-31) arrived on scene with a fully involved truck and a grass fire extend­ ing to the woods. He quickly requested two extra tankers and two extra brush trucks to the scene. Crews responded in, quickly knocked all fire down and started mop up. All units went back in service two hours later.

Firefighters swiftly stretched multiple handlines and began ag­ gressive operations to bring the fire under control. EMS units from Mastic Beach and Shirley were also called to the scene to provide standby coverage and rehabilita­ tion services for responders.

No injuries were reported dur­ ing the incident. Firefighters re­

mained on the scene for a little under two hours. Due to the oper­ ation, William Floyd Parkway was closed northbound in the area.

Mutual aid was provided by the Bellport, Brookhaven, Center Moriches, East Moriches, Mastic, Brookhaven National Faboratory (BNF), Ridge, and Yaphank fire departments. The Brookhaven Fire Marshal’ s O ffice has taken over the investigation into the cause o f the fire.

North Patchogue FD Handles Large Brush Fire with Multiple Sheds Burning NORTH PATCHOGUE, NY - On Sunday, March 2nd at 3:44 P.M, the North Patchogue Fire Department was dispatched to a resi­ dence on Sycamore Street for a reported brush fire. First arriv­ ing units encountered a large brush fire with multiple sheds on fire. The alarm was then upgraded to a structure fire due to ex­ posure issues. North Patchogue Fire Department Engine 5-17-4 arrived first due and stretched multiple hand lines. Mutual aid was provided by the Blue Point Fire Department and Patchogue Fire Department. The fire is currently under investigation by the Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal Office and Suffolk County Po­ lice Department Arson Section. All units operated under the command of North Patchogue Fire Department 5-17-30.

Fire Alarms IAN fire departments have what is commonly referred to as “smells and bells” calls. The term refers to basic calls that may involve frequent flyers such as local restaurants. Firefighters may also use the term “routine” although arguably no call is rou­ tine; complacency being the subject for another day. What­ ever these basic calls mean to your district one thing is certain and that is these calls will typi­ cally involve a fire alarm as the initiating device and the reason for boarding an apparatus.

Therefore, firefighters must have at least a rudimentary under­ standing of fire alarms and fire alarm systems. As with most re­ quired fire service knowledge and skills, instructors must first start with the basics and build up on how to apply that information.

NFPA 72 and 25 govern fire alarm systems while 110 and 111 oversee the power supply.

To start each fire alarm system has to have a fire alarm control unit (FACU). This would be the brain of the system that moni­ tors, controls and responds to disruptions.

Obviously, the FACU is generally operating nor­ mally but there are three other conditions that can occur. The first is “alarm” which is an im­ mediate threat to life, property and assignment. An alarm con­ dition may be the result of a heat/smoke detector or a drop in water pressure. The second is a “trouble” condition which is in reference to an issue with the FACU itself as opposed to smoke condition such as a break in the circuitry. The last is a “su­ pervisory” condition which indi­ cates an issue with the system and/or any component parts. Su­ pervisory mode can include other systems such as kitchen suppression or fire pumps be­ cause a FACU may control more than just fire alarms. An example of supervisory is when a FACU responds to a valve being stuck shut.

When a FACU has supervisory functionality, it may need to be temporarily shutdown in order to conduct any system testing. For example, weekly testing of a fire pump in accordance with NFPA 25 would require taking the FACU out of service while that

test is being conducted. Also, most alarm systems have a test mode that allows it to function while testing or even construc­ tion is taking place. In the case of the latter, it is always wise to let an emergency dispatcher know the situation prior to noti­ fying firefighters.

A fire alarm starts with initiation of device or circuit that signals the FACU into trouble or super­ visory mode. There are multiple types of initiating devices such as fire, smoke, carbon monox­ ide, heat detectors (including rate of rise heat detectors), pres­ sure devices and water flow de­ vices. Also included are any manual devices such as a pull station. In a conventional system any of these devices will short circuit so that no other device in that “zone” can be activated thus leading firefighters to a general area. On the other hand, an addressable system sends a binary code (either a 0 or 1) that results in identifying a specific device.

This is an important aspect be­ cause when firefighters arrive at a location they want to quickly identify where a problem may be. Although it depends on the SOPs of the department fire­ fighters should always advise residents or commercial man­ agers to NOT reset an alarm sys­ tem for this reason i.e. because it makes identifying an issue all that more cumbersome. Fire­ fighters would rather search a specific zone or floor as op­ posed to an entire building.

Moving on to how alarm sys­ tems are powered? Obviously, there has to be not only a reliable primary source but also a reli­ able backup - we are talking about emergency situations after all. Typically, the primary power source is the local utility while backup sources are often an engine driven generator or acid/lead battery. Back up sources have to provide enough power for anywhere from 5-15 minutes in alarm and a full 24 hours in standby. This goes for not only the system as a whole but some components as well.

Once a fire alarm signal is sent to the FACU how are occupants notified that the alarm is acti­ vated? That can be either by sound, voice or a visual cue. Vi­ sually, flashing lights are the most common but jurisdictional building codes (usually at the state level) determine the num­ ber, placement and type of noti­ fication device. Relative to sounds the volume level must be 15 decibels above average ambi­ ent sound and 5 decibels above the maximum sound. It is a good idea for firefighters and safety personnel to test fire alarms to make sure all occupants can hear/see the notification devices.

One last note on notifiers is the type of sound. Temporal 3 is a three-tone sound (heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=TfN5mpLdmys) that indi­ cates evacuation is necessary whereas temporal 4 (heard here:https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=BziW_vCC-aA ) is a four-tone sound that indicates carbon monoxide.

The last part of alarm systems discussed here would be the monitoring of any FACU. NFPA 1221 standardizes the installa­ tion, maintenance and use of emergency services communi­ cations systems. In short this is all about who is monitoring any issues with the alarm system.

This may be a public emergency system which is usually a munic­ ipality such as a police or fire station or even a private com­ pany. In both cases the on-site FACU acts as a transmitter that sends a signal that ends at the monitoring station which may be on site or operated remotely. In most cases both of these have 24-hour coverage which is obvi­ ously advantageous since the proper assistance can be dis­ patched to a given location.

To add to the definition of a mon­ itoring station the term “propri­ etary” means it is owned by the same entity as the alarm prop­ erty. College campuses are an example of this since most have a public safety building that is part of the campus property and staffed 24/7 to respond to any calls. Lastly, a central service station provides not only moni­ toring but also record keeping and periodic testing. It is there­

Here are some basic steps upon ar­ rival: 1) Contact the property manager/owner and ask about when the alarm went off and if there is any construction or other activi­ ties that may cause an alarm to

trip.

2) Find the FACU to silence and subsequently the zone and/or device in question.

3) Either reset the alarm or ad­ vise the property manager/owner to contact the alarm company used to reset the alarm.

One last note would be that fire­ fighters would need to know enough about alarm systems to be able to identify a potentially dangerous situation presently and in the future. Although typi­ cally it is not in the prevue and training for firefighters to sanc­ tion a home or business owner it is their responsibility to call a municipal fire code compliance officer with reasonable suspi­ cions of a violation.

M assive Brush Fire Burns on Long Island EAST MORICHES, NY - On Saturday, March 8th at approximately 1:00 P.M., multiple fire depart­ ments were activated for several brush fires along Sunrise Highway. A total of 90 departments combined from Suffolk and Nassau Counties combated the flames. The fire, which spread due to dry conditions and strong winds, consumed 600-acres of the Pine Barrens. A state of emer­ gency was declared by Governor Kathy Hochol.

College Point Fire Held to 3rd Alarm

QUEENS, NY - FDNY Queens companies were called out to a vacant structure fire at 2 0-24119th Street in the College Point Section of Queens early Sunday night, February 23rd. One firefighter suffered a minor injury. The fire was held to a thirdalarm, and the cause is still under investigation.

2nd Alarm Strikes Vacant Building in Manhattan MANHATTAN, NY - Firefighters were called to 615 West 46th Street on February 18th at 8:04 A.M. for a reported structure fire. The fire was found to have started on the second-floor of a six-story vacant building.

FDNY Rescue 2 Celebrates 100th Anniversary BROOKLYN, NY - FDNY Rescue 2' 100th Anniversary Celebration was held on March 1st at Res­ cue 2 Quarters. Several hundred people turned out, including past chiefs of department and former commissioner Daniel Nigro. Speaking at the event included Rescue 2's Captain Liam Flaherty, Commissioner Tucker and Chief of Special Operations Malcom Moore.

NEW YORK - The National September 11th Memorial, to­ gether with the Port Authority o f N ew York and N ew Jersey, re­ membered the lives o f the six in­ nocent victims killed in the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bom bing on the 32nd an­ niversary o f the terrorist attack.

Following the program, atten­ dees were invited to place roses on the victim s’names that are etched in bronze together on Panel N-73 o f the M emorial’ s North Pool, not far from One World Trade Center.

The six names are alongside those o f 9/11 victims.
