MEDFORD CHURCH FIRE REQUIRES MASSIVE RESPONSE

MEDFORD, NJ - On July 3, 2026, at 9:10 P.M., the Burlington County Fire Alarm Room dispatched the Medford Fire Department and automatic aid units to 199 Church Road, Medford, NJ for the report of a church on fire. South Jersey was in the midst of a heat wave where the heat index was over 100-degrees. A summer lightening and thunderstorm rolled through the area, and there was a reported lightening strike to the Fellowship Alliance Chapel.

Search for Missing Teen Ends in Tragedy After Massive Multi-Agency Response in Wildwood WILDWOOD, NJ - On Monday, June 1, 2026, Wildwood City Fire Department and the North Wildwood Fire Department were dispatched, along with Wildwood Police, for multiple swimmers in distress off the Schellinger JUMP TO FILE# Ave. beach.

062326141 Wildwood Beach Patrol ALERT Team was on duty and responded as well. First responders were able to pull 3 swimmers from the water, however; a fourth swimmer was unaccounted for. Rescue swimmers from both departments joined the Wildwood and North Wildwood beach patrols entering the water to begin searching for the missing 14-year-old.

Water temperatures that day were in the low 60s. Crews were joined by marine and aviation units from the United States Coast Guard and the New Jersey State Police.

North Wildwood Fire Department also responded with their marine unit. Beach Patrols also launched rescue boards and PWCs. The search area covered about a mile of beach.

Despite the best efforts of the first responders, the boy’s body was recovered on June 9th near the United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. - JOHN BEHNKE

That photographer is a photojournalist and New York City native.

As the story goes, he was walking home from his parents apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan one day in 2024 when he came upon an incident involving a manhole with fire department activity. Intrigued by this, he

started taking photos which sparked a new dimension in his life. In short, he began taking photos at FDNY incidents, particularly of personnel following up by presenting the photos to them.

Their appreciation of this is what created this book. The book has no numbered pages. The activities took place in Manhattan and The Bronx in 2025. The descriptions are of the dates, number of alarms, street locations, names of the personnel and the fire company they were part of. Some photos are of the overall scene, while many others are isolated shots of firefighters on the sidelines doing what most fire photographers would not consider. Most fire photographers concentrate on the flames, but Benjamin in addition to that concentrated on individuals and groups of personnel. As the Forward by a lieutenant put it, it “captures the FDNY in its purest form-honest, raw, yet undeniably powerful.” The author also provides technical information regarding the film and camera he used, as well as settings. There are both black and white, and color photos. It is an enjoyable book giving tribute to “New York’s Bravest.”

Two Firefighters Injured Battling Ridgefield Park House Fire RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ - On June 13th at 6:47 p.m., the Ridgefield Park Fire Department was dispatched to 96 7th St. for a reported fire. Assistant Chief Zardoya arrived on scene with smoke and fire showing and transmitted the working fire, bringing mutual aid from Bogota, Hackensack and Teaneck to the scene. Companies arrived and began an aggressive interior attack while conducting searches on all floors of the home. A second alarm was transmitted, with companies from Englewood, Leonia and Little Ferry providing firehouse coverage in the Village. The fire is being investigated by the Bureau of Fire Prevention. There were no reported injuries by the occupants, but two firefighters were transported to Holy Name Medical Center for injuries.

Seven Ducklings Rescued

by Avenel Firefighters AVENEL, NJ - Avenel Fire Department personnel were called to Remsen Avenue on May 25th in response to an unusual rescue involving multiple ducklings stuck in a storm drain.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered seven ducklings stuck in the drain with their mother close by. In order to securely remove each duckling without causing any harm, crews had to work carefully to gain access to the storm drain.

Firefighters reunited the seven ducklings with their mother, who had stayed near the scene during the rescue effort. After that, the duck family was free to carry on without incident.

Arkansas: Larry Dale "Muff" Mustion Jr., 44 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: Sept. 18, 2025 Death Date: Sept. 19, 2025 Fire Department: Luxora Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On September 18, 2025, at 9:15 p.m., Lieutenant Larry Mustion Jr. responded with the Luxora Volunteer Fire Department to an outdoor fire that was spreading toward a dry wooded area. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters packed up the hoses and returned to the station. The following day at 12:12 p.m., Lieutenant Mustion passed away after suffering a cardiovascular event.

Alabama: Alexander G. Trenier, 63 Rank: Deputy Chief Incident Date: Feb. 22, 2025 Death Date: Feb. 23, 2025 Fire Department: City of Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Initial Summary: On February 22, 2025, at 7:33 a.m., Deputy Chief Alexander Trenier responded to a residential fire call. After returning to the station, Deputy Chief Trenier reported that he was not feeling well and turned duties over to another chief. He then went home sick.

On February 23, 2025, family was unable to reach Deputy Chief Trenier by phone. When the family went to his house to check on him, they found Deputy Chief Trenier deceased.

New York: Laurence "Larry" Pude, 83 Rank: Fire Police Captain Incident Date: April 4, 2025 Death Date: April 4, 2025 Fire Department: Cambria Volunteer Fire Company Inc. Initial Summary: On April 4, 2025, at 10:26 a.m., Fire Police Captain Laurence Pude responded to the fire station at the time of an alarm. Fire Police Captain opened the station building for other responders which included opening all the truck bay doors. After the responding truck left the station, Fire Police Captain also completed other duties at the station in support of the incident and closed all truck bay doors.

Fire Police Captain Pude then responded to the emergency scene and provided traffic and scene management. Later that day at a neighboring fire company fundraising event, Fire Police Captain Pude suffered a medical event that caused him to collapse and become unresponsive. Resuscitation efforts began immediately. Fire Police Captain Pude was then transported to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pronounced deceased.

New York: Joseph John Mazza, Sr., 47 Rank: Firefighter/EMT Incident Date: Aug. 22, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 23, 2025 Fire Department: Pocatello Mount Fire Company Initial Summary: On August 22, 2025, at 4:06 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Joseph John Mazza Sr. responded to an emergency medical call with the Pocatello Mount Hope Fire Company. The company returned to service from the incident at 4:50 p.m. On August 23, 2025, at 4:35 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Mazza suffered a medical episode at his residence. Firefighter/EMT Mazza was transported to a local hospital where he later died due to a cardiovascular event.

ALWAYS RESPECT THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE US UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

July 1st is a special day for Hackensack firefighters. On this day, this year, retired Lt. Leonard “Lenny” Coyman paid a visit to his old department. Members of the 2nd Platoon assembled at Fire Headquarters, where Lt. Coyman informed members of the sacrifices five city officers and firefighters made on this date in 1988.

There are no longer any firefighters on the job that were working when the five members perished in what is known by the national fire service as “The Hackensack Ford Fire.”

As a firefighter who was there, “...he provided invaluable first hand insight into the events of July 1, 1988, and shared the lessons learned from that tragic and fatal fire,” it was noted on the union's Facebook page.

“Hearing directly from someone who experienced the incident offers our members a deeper understanding of the sacrifice made, the changes that resulted from the fire, and the importance of carrying those lessons forward in today's fire service.”

At 6 p.m. every July 1st, active and retired city firefighters, mutual aid firefighters, families and friends assemble at the Fallen Firefighter's Memorial at Memorial Park to remember their sacrifice. The park is also dedicated to four other LODD city firefighters. In addition, firefighters who worked at “the pile” after the World Trade Center attack, and have died from 9-11 related illnesses, were recognized. Their passing are also in the Line-of-Duty.

Recently, the park has been completely renovated and Chief of Department Keith Rosazza recognized all of the volunteer workers, vendors, contributors, etc., that are responsible for the park improvements.

Lt. Coyman has made every memorial. He wears his dress uniform

and is one of the members who carries a memorial wreath to the five pillars, representing the fallen five, and salutes same. Every year the lieutenant can be seen wiping a tear from his eyes with his white gloves.

This year, participants braved the 90 + degree temperature. No rain or rainbow this year, as in past years and after the fire was brought under control 1988.

During the memorial, Ladder Co. 1 was dispatched to an elevator entrapment with multiple victims. Upon assessing the situation, Rescue Co. 1 and Deputy Chief Justin Derevyanik were also dispatched to a long-duration operation.

The Beat Goes On. DOWNS: A fire at a Mohican Rd. home in Blairstown claimed the lives of two residents, June 16th. Rescuers pulled the couple from the home, but the two later died from their injuries, according to state police.

UPS: Nicholas Gillo has been promoted to Chief of the West Orange Fire Department. John Casiero is the new deputy chief.

DOWNS: Multiple fires occurred at Sun Retreats RV Park in Barnegat, June 20th. A witness heard a loud explosion just before the fire broke out, according to Jersey Shore online.

UPS: Newly appointed firefighters in West Orange are: Antonio Cilenti, Callens Desrameaux, Steven Mc Mickle, Tristan Olaechea and Justin Voss.

DOWNS: Two people suffered severe burns as the result of a fire in an abandoned bank building on Monticello av., Jersey City, June 19th. Firefighters rescued the pair and they were taken to a local hospital. One firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to a city spokeswoman. The investigation, including why the people were inside the structure, was ongoing.

UPS: On June 29th, New Milford firefighters used an extrication tool to free a deer that was stuck between two fences. It was turned over to animal control.

DOWNS: Wayne police responded to a reported car fire on Willowbrook Blvd., June 30th. When officers arrived, they found a body of an

“unidentified individual” in the driver's seat, authorities said. The investigation was ongoing.

UPS: Linden's new firefighter is Nicholas Moreno.

DOWNS: A rooftop solar panel caught fire at Allendale Rehabilitation & Health Care on Route 17, June 29th. After the fire was extinguished, residents whose rooms were directly below the affected area were moved to other parts of the facility by staff and first responders, according to police Chief Michael Dillon.

UPS: New firefighters in Gloucester are Aiden Scullan, Chris Dolson and Mike Girenti.

DOWNS: On June 26th, a large tree limb fell onto the roof of the Hillsdale Vol. Ambulance Squad building on Washington av, creating damage to the roof area. There were no injuries or damage to ambulances; however, the building was deemed as being temporarily “off limits,” according to reports.

UPS: Keith Mores has been promoted to fire lieutenant at the Princeton University Plasma Physics Lab. DOWNS: During the evening of July 4th, firefighters in River Edge had to wait for a utility crew to cut off energized power lines that were pulled down by a toppled tree and ignited a dwelling fire at Whales & Fifth Avenues. The house was completely involved in fire. No one was home at the time, officials said. One firefighter was transported to Hackensack UMC and treated for a non-lifethreatening injury.

UPS: Robert O' Keefe has been appointed as the new firefighter at

Princeton University Plasma Physics Lab. DOWNS: A surface whale struck Carteret Fire Department Marine 2 in the New York-New Jersey port area, at the mouth of the Raritan Bay, forcing firefighters to abandon the vessel as it began to take on water, July 3rd.

The vessel was assisting with a regional special operations marine security detail for the Independence Day weekend. The strike caused serious damage to the boat, which immediately began taking on water, giving firefighters only seconds to abandon Marine 2, according to FOX News.

Officials said a nearby jet ski operator and another boater immediately came to the firefighters aid before a Perth Amboy F.D. marine unit arrived and helped rescue the crew from the water.

UPS: The new career firefighter in Morris Township is Taht Valentine.

DOWNS: Fire consumed a commercial av. dwelling in the Avenel section of Woodbridge Twp, July 4th.

Part of the rear roof collapsed as firefighters went to a defensive operation.

No occupants were found inside the home, according to reports.

UPS: New Egypt Volunteer Fire Co. 1 is celebrating 125 years of service. This included a celebration and a parade on Aug. 1st.

DOWNS: Twelve residents of two Grove St. dwellings in Bloomfield were displaced due to a fire on June 30th. Two animals were transported to East Orange Animal Hospital for evaluation due to possible smoke inhalation, according to officials.

UPS: Robbinsville Township will

acquire a new 3000-gallon tanker. The purchase was made possible through a $500,000 legislative grant by Senator Linda Greenstein, Assemblyman Wayne De Angelo, Assemblywoman Tennille R. Mc Coy and the Robbertsville Township administration, according to a department Facebook post.

DOWNS: An 8-year-old girl and a 70-year-old grandmother died in a multiple-alarm fire that destroyed a Park Pl. home in Orange, in July.

UPS: In July, the Township of Washington recognized volunteer Firefighter James Zaconie for his 50years of service with the fire department. He was also recognized as Bergen County's Veteran of the Month for August.

DOWNS: The Red Cross assisted 13 people that were displaced when a multiple-alarm fire involved three North 5th St. homes in Harrison, July 17th. One firefighter suffered a laceration to the hand and was transported to a local hospital. Two residents were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A pet dog perished in the fire, according to reports.

UPS: July 16th promotions in the Atlantic City Fire Department are Jeffrey Bird to Deputy Chief and Brian Adams and Sean Flynn to Battalion Chief. The new captains are Charles Reale, Jeffrey Schlundt and Ronald Laielli.

DOWNS: On July 13th, Jersey City Engine 13 was involved in an MVA at Danforth av. & Old Bergen Rd. Members were transported to JCMC and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Two-Alarm Fire Destroys Piscataway Home

PISCATAWAY, NJ - On Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 2:55 p.m., the River Road Fire Company was dispatched to 309 Bound Brook Ave. for a reported structure fire.

After receiving multiple 911 calls, including one from the homeowner reporting the house was on fire, the first-due chief transmitted a firstalarm box. As patrol units arrived, they confirmed the house was on fire.

Upon the arrival of the chief, he reported a working fire with heavy fire showing from the rear and side of the house and requested a second alarm, along with the township general. Further investigation revealed heavy fire throughout the structure and through the roof.

Shortly after units arrived and initiated an interior attack, conditions rapidly deteriorated, prompting crews to evacuate the structure.

Firefighters also discovered multiple propane tanks involved in the fire. Shortly after crews transitioned to an exterior attack, the Bravo side of the house collapsed.

All members working on the roof evacuated after completing ventilation cuts, followed by a major roof collapse on the Charlie/Delta side.

In total, crews established three water supplies and operated five handlines, one tower ladder, and one deck gun before conditions al-

lowed firefighters to re-enter the structure for overhaul. Companies operated in blistering heat and humidity for nearly three hours before the fire was fully extinguished.

Units on the scene included River Road Engine 652, Ladder 656, Rescue 655; New Market Engine 2 and Truck 6; Holmes Marshall Squad 675 and Engine 671; Possumtown Engine 631; Arbor Hose Engine 641; North Stelton Ladder 627; East Franklin Squad 27; South Plainfield Engine 5; Bound Brook Squad 23; Metuchen Engine 1; Middlesex County HazMat HM-5 and HM-7; and multiple cover companies throughout the township.

Four Alarms Struck for Englewood Cliffs Restaurant Fire ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ Shortly before 4:30 A.M. on June 11th, the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department was toned out for a fire alarm at 495 Sylvan Avenue, a large two-and-a-half-story restaurant. Companies arrived to smoke pushing from the basement.

A working fire was JUMP TO FILE# 061626134 transmitted.

Heavy heat and dense smoke made advancing in the basement with few openings difficult.

Additional mutual aid was requested for ventilation and fire suppression. Companies were withdrawn and a short defensive operation was initiated. The smoke condition subsided and members entered again, but the layout of the building made finding the seat of the fire difficult.

More mutual aid was called in as the heat of the day began to take its toll. Several holes were made in the side of the structure to attempt to access the flames. A total of seven ladders were put up for access to the roof and for master stream operations after firefighters were backed out again.

The first floor soon collapsed into the basement.

Additional companies were requested to the scene from across Bergen County. The defensive posture continued for several hours as heavy construction equipment was put to work dismantling the building so the flames could be quelled. Mutual aid began to be released and the fire was placed under control at about 8:00 P.M. The cause is being investigated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad. The initial cause is believed to be electrical. No serious injuries were reported, only a few minor heat related conditions.

Montvale Firefighters Use Rapid Entry Technique to Rescue Trapped Driver MONTVALE, NJ - The Montvale Volunteer Fire Department responded to a three-vehicle crash with rollover at the intersection of West Grand Avenue and DePiero Drive, June 6th.

Arriving police officers confirmed that one person was trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Firefighters responded with the Chief, Deputy Chief, Rescue Pumper M1, and Pumper M3. Crews quickly extricated the driver by breaking the passenger-side window and unlocking the doors, allowing faster access to the patient than using hydraulic tools to cut through the vehicle. Emergency crews remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes while the vehicle was recovered and the roadway was cleared.

Allendale Firefighters Stop Vehicle Fire Threatening Structure ALLENDALE, NJ - The Allendale Fire Department responded to a reported brush fire on June 2nd when a neighbor noticed smoke close to a building in the borough. Officers from the Allendale Police Department arrived while firefighters were on their way and discovered the situation was actually a fully involved vehicle fire endangering a nearby building. As firefighters arrived, residents were evacuated. Within minutes of the first engine arriving, firefighters swiftly used hose lines to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to the building. According to officials, there were no injuries.

Ramsey Firefighters Respond to Vehicle in Creek Along Route 17 RAMSEY, NJ - On June 23rd, the Ramsey Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 17 South after a vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in a creek. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the driver had already been removed from the vehicle. A heavy-duty wrecker was brought in to recover the vehicle from the creek. Emergency crews remained on scene while the recovery operation was completed, and the roadway was cleared after approximately 90 minutes.

Medford Church Fire Requires Massive Response MEDFORD, NJ - On July 3, 2026, at 9:10 P.M., the Burlington County Fire Alarm Room dispatched the Medford Fire Department and automatic aid units to 199 Church Road, Medford, NJ for the report of a church on fire.

South Jersey was in the midst of a heat wave where the heat index was over 100-degrees. A summer lightening and thunderstorm rolled through the area, and there was a reported lightening strike to the Fellowship Alliance Chapel.

First arriving units reported fire showing from the roof area of a very large multi-story church building. After the size up and evaluating the situation, several additional alarms and resources were immediately called to the

scene to have the resources in place to make a good hit on the fire and halt its progress and extension to other parts of the building.

Water supplies were established and multiple ladder companies ascended to the roof to make the appropriate cuts to direct, vent, and access the fire in the massive roof system. After a multi-county response of 5+ alarms and an over three hour fire fight, the fire was placed under control at 12:26 A.M. on July 4th. There were no injuries reported.

Grill Fire Spreads to Paramus Home, Injures Two Residents & Claims Two Family Pets PARAMUS, NJ - On June 15th at approximately 6:00 P.M., the Paramus Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 116 Cloverdale Avenue.

Upon arrival of the first chief, fire had already engulfed the rear of the residence. The fire originated from a grill located outside the home on a rear deck and quickly extended into a three-season room before spreading into the structure. Firefighters operated aggressively to contain the rapidly

advancing fire and prevent further extension.

Mutual aid was provided by the Maywood, Oradell, Saddle Brook who assisted on the scene while River Edge, Washington Township, and Fair Lawn covered firehouses. Paramus EMS and Paramus CERT assisted on scene, providing rehabilitation support to

operating personnel.

Two adult occupants sustained injuries. Tragically, two family pets were lost as a result of the fire.

Well-Respected Chief Retires After 40-Years and a Birthday After 40-years of service, and along with his 65th birthday, North Hudson Second Battalion Chief Mike Giacumbo retired on June 29th. He started his career with the former West New York Fire Department.

On this June morning, the 500 block of 43rd St. in Union City, was JUMP TO FILE# shut down to traffic 071426156 for the well-respected chief's retirement walk-out.

The street was filled with firefighters, retired members, family and friends.

Before his walk-out, Fire Control announced the chief's retirement over the radio. That announcement included: “...strong leadership under stressful situations.” More recently, that included the Thanksgiving fire with a back draft and collapse (West New York) and a fully involved Jane Street dwelling in Weehawken during an active multiple-alarm fire going in lower Union City.

Attending the walk-out was Chief Giacumbo's brother, Danny, who also served for 40years on the job, retiring as a highly respected Second Battalion Chief. He too started his career with the former WNYFD. The Second Battalion is the busiest battalion in North Hudson, recording 3127 runs in 2025.

Their experience and leadership has been passed on to current officers and firefighters.

As part of the walk-out ceremony, the assembly sang “Happy Birthday” in the middle of the city street.

Retired Captain Frank Martinez said, “I always considered myself lucky that I was able to work with him. He was an incredible influence in many career!”

The North Hudson Facebook page read, “Some careers are measured by years. Mike's is measured by the firefighters he mentored, the citizens he protected and the example he set every single day. He is without question, one of the most respected chiefs our department has ever had!”

Retired Captain Zack Zellner summed it up. “He's a giant of a man.”

In Monmouth County, the Middletown Township Fire Police operate several vehicles. This month we feature Unit 71-3-86, a 2012 Ford F-550 XL 4x4 with five seat cab. It is an upgraded chassis on an older body. The older body (with no identification) was once used by MONOC on a paramedic vehicle.

In addition, it has an ARE add on. Features and equipment include a 7 kw generator, rear telescoping lights, traffic control equipment such as safety cones, caution tape, temporary stop signs with bases and Zephyr traffic sign bases. In addition, there are two pieces of unidentified equipment that are covered and mounted alongside the generator. They may be smaller generators.

HO-HO-KUS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Quick Knockdown at Kitchen Fire in Ho-Ho-Kus HO-HO-KUS, NJ - On May 26th, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire at an occupied and operating restaurant on Sheridan Avenue, where initial attempts by staff to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful.

First-arriving units encountered smoke showing from the front entrance, while all occupants had safely evacuated prior to fire department arrival. A Working Fire assignment was requested, bringing mutual aid from neighboring departments.

and quickly located and extinguished the fire within a large commercial oven. Damage was primarily contained to the oven itself, which was destroyed, along with some water damage to the surrounding area.

No injuries were reported, and crews operated safely throughout the incident.

DENNIS VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY

In June, Dennis Fire units responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in Dennisville. Upon arrival, crews found a two-vehicle collision with serious injuries requiring an air medical response. Firefighters assisted with patient care and traffic control before establishing a landing zone in South Dennis for the arriving medical helicopter. The patient was subsequently transported to a regional hospital for further treatment. Additional agencies assisted at the scene.

Busy Day Keeps Hasbrouck Heights Firefighters Responding to Multiple Calls HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - During a busy operating period on June 4th, Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department personnel responded to many emergency calls across Teterboro and the Borough. Firefighters responded to a car crash with a suspected entrapment, a brush fire, a fire alarm, and another brush fire that endangered many nearby automobiles, according to officials. Leaders of the department expressed gratitude to the Wood-Ridge Fire Department for their mutual aid support.

Wyckoff Firefighters Extinguish Car Fire After Route 208 Crash WYCKOFF, NJ - The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department responded overnight to a two-vehicle collision on Route 208 North on June 19th after one of the vehicles caught fire. Firefighters swiftly put out the car fire, according to officials, and finished overhaul operations to make sure there were no further hot spots. The damaged car was then taken off the road by the hired towing company. All travel lanes were reopened to traffic when the vehicle was removed. Wyckoff Fire Department Company 2 and Protection Fire Company No. 1 offered mutual aid support.

Point Pleasant Beach Firefighters Assist at Multiple House Fires POINT PLEASANT, NJ - Members of Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company No. 2 arrived at Point Pleasant on June 19th to help with several building fires on Sunrise Drive. According to officials, crews from Engines 4201, 4301 and 4211 helped firefighters from Point Pleasant Fire Department Station 75 put out two house fires. Strong gusts and high temperatures made it difficult for firefighters to suppress the situation. Several companies worked together to contain the fires and prevent more damage.

On September 18, 1980 an abandoned former railroad warehouse off of River Road in Edgewater was destroyed in a blaze that required six departments for mutual aid. The fire also caused a large brush fire in the area.

AVENEL, NJ - At approximately 8:08 p.m. on May 29th, members of the Avenel Fire Department, along with firefighters from Woodbridge and Port Reading, responded to Ella Avenue for a reported structure fire.

While units were en route, the Woodbridge Police Department reported smoke UMP TO FILE # showing from the J061526113 first floor of the residence. Firefighters arrived to find a twostory single-family home with smoke visible from first-floor windows, prompting the declaration of a working fire and a first-alarm assignment.

The fire was successfully contained to the first story by the firstarriving crew's aggressive interior fire attack and deployment of a 1¾inch attack line. Crews concurrently carried out primary and secondary searches, confirming that there were no persons inside, and a second hose line was put into operation.

The incident was turned over to fire investigators after a thorough cleanup. The Middlesex County Fire Prevention Bureau is still looking into the fire. There were no reported injuries.

As part of their monthly extrication drill, members of Mansfield Township Fire Company No. 1 and Tri-County Volunteer Fire Company trained on a car stuck under a bus. In order to safely reach and remove simulated occupants while controlling the risks posed by the massive vehicle and small working area, crews performed stabilization, lifting, and cutting techniques.

East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 members held a training session on Tower 42 operations and fireground water distribution capabilities on May 28th. Firefighters reviewed master stream techniques and pumping operations in addition to practicing the whole deployment of the department's 100-foot aerial tower. The 2,000-GPM pump in Tower 42 was used by crews to practice delivering massive amounts of water, which are frequently required during significant fire events.

LAURELDALE FIRE RESCUE

Members of Laureldale Fire Rescue took part in an Atlantic County Tanker Task Force training exercise held in Mullica Township, focusing on rural water supply operations. Crews trained in tanker shuttle procedures using portable ponds to establish a continuous water source in areas without hydrants. Water was transported from fill sites and dumped into portable basins, where it was then drafted by engines to support firefighting operations.

To improve water delivery operations in places without dependable hydrant access, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department held drafting drills. Chief Mark Russo of the Warren Fire Department and the Mount Bethel Fire Co. contributed a 3,500-gallon portable drafting pond for the training. Under simulated fireground conditions, firefighters rehearsed creating a water supply by drafting water via a large-diameter suction hose and running apparatus pumps.

On December 6, 1985, Paterson firefighters fought a multiple-alarm fire in three buildings on Cianci Street. A possible organized crime connection was considered as a cause. No serious injuries were reported in the early-morning blaze.

Quick Response Contains Bridge Fire in Mays Landing MAYS LANDING, NJ - On June 12th, Laureldale Fire Rescue crews responded to a separate fire involving a trestle bridge off Reliance Avenue alongside the Mays Landing Fire Department. Utility 18-34 arrived first and deployed a handline to knock down the fire, while Engine 18-33 supplied water to support suppression efforts. The fire was quickly brought under control, preventing further extension and damage. Additional assistance was provided by the Dorothy Volunteer Fire Company, which used a marine unit to address remaining hotspots from the water.

Two Firefighters Injured in Bergenfield Blaze BERGENFIELD, NJ - A noon-time fire at 9 Brown Pl. in Bergenfield caused extensive damage to a one-and-a-half-story frame dwelling on June 28th.

At about 12:30 P.M., the BFD was dispatched, and JUMP TO FILE# with heavy smoke 070526116 reported, Dumont E-4 was sent as well. The Deputy Chief arrived to heavy smoke pushing from the residence and requested a second alarm. Dumont E-4 arrived and stretched a line in the front door. Bergenfield units were close behind and ran a back up line and confirmed all residents were evacuated. Englewood Truck 2 laddered and vented the roof. A third line was advanced through a rear door.

As companies opened up and overhauled, the smoke condition slowly diminished. The fire was placed under control in less than one hour. The cause is being investigated, but is believed to have started in the basement and traveled up through the walls. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with heat related injuries and soon released.

Fire units from Dumont, Englewood, Teaneck, New Milford, Tenafly, Closter and River Edge assisted at the scene, and Haworth and Cresskill covered the Borough.

Fully Involved House Fire Triggers 3-Alarm Response in Sayreville SAYREVILLE, NJ - Just before 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 14th, the JUMP TO FILE# Sayreville Volunteer 061626116 Fire Department was alerted to a structure fire in the Melrose section of town. Station 3 called dispatch and notified them that it was a confirmed fire with a column in the air, and requested the re-dispatch.

Upon arrival of Chief 110, heavy smoke and fire was showing.

There was heavy fire throughout the entirety of the home and multiple collapses occurred. Multiple handlines, three aerial master streams, and a blitz fire were used to bring the fire under control.

In total, the fire reached two alarms, with third alarm companies standing by in all four Borough of Sayreville fire departments. Companies on scene included Melrose Hose Company, Sayreville Engine Co., President Park Fire Company, Morgan Fire Comoany, South Amboy Engine 7, Perth Amboy Engine 3, Keyport Ladder 22, South River Engine 3, EBIFC Truck 709, Fords Engine 7-3, and Middlesex County Hazmat.

Finderne Engines Respond to Route 22 Crash in Somerset County SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ - The Finderne Fire Department responded to a car accident on U.S. Route 22 on June 8th. The chief, deputy chief, assistant chief, Engine 302 and Engine 303 were among those that responded, according to officials.

Together with other emergency responders, firefighters worked to secure the area, evaluate potential threats, and support incident operations.

New Brunswick Ladder Co. 1 has been assigned a new Rosenbauer Cobra model 100-foot mid-mount platform. The cab has six seats and the body has 15 compartments. It is 11-feet tall and 46-feet 3inches long. It holds 200-feet of ground ladders and the are several anchor points on the rig.

In remembrance of Police Officer Eugene Miglio III, who lost his life while performing his duties on June 2, 1995, the Wildwood Crest Volunteer Fire Department joined the Wildwood Crest Police Department and Wildwood Crest EMS on June 2nd. Residents, family members, police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel assembled at the gravestone and memorial tree honoring Miglio.

While performing his responsibilities, Officer Miglio engaged in a struggle with a belligerent subject and sustained fatal injuries.

BERLIN, N.J. — May 29 — Firefighter Gary Behnke was honored by Berlin Fire Company No. 1 for retiring from full-time work at VCI Emergency Vehicles and for 50 years of active volunteer service. Over the course of his 50 years with the department, Behnke was a trusted firefighter, mentor, and knowledgeable resource for other members. Training, dayto-day operations, and the department's ongoing community outreach were all aided by his experience and willingness to assist. Members of the department expressed gratitude to him for his enduring services and commitment to the fire service.

WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - At 1:29 p.m. on June 27th, Wood-Ridge units were dispatched to 16 Veterans Drive for a reported car Fire. Moments later, dispatch upgraded the call to a Structure Fire. Companies arrived to a fully involved SUV with fire extending up the side of a building. A second alarm was struck, bringing mutual aid units to the scene. Companies were able to extinguish a rapidly extending fire in under an hour. Mutual aid from Carlstadt, Hasbrouck Heights, Lodi, Moonachie and Wallington assisted on scene, while companies from Little Ferry, Rutherford and South Hackensack provided coverage.

Two dogs were safely removed from the building. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

While performing driver training in the township's Mallard neighbourhood on June 6th, members of the Allamuchy Fire Department had a pleasant surprise. Ladder 91-69 workers stopped at a lemonade stand run by neighborhood kids who were giving away free lemonade to passersby, according to officials. Firefighters enjoyed the cool respite during their training exercises because it was warm throughout the afternoon. Members of the department expressed gratitude to the kids for their hospitality and kindness, pointing out that these kinds of community exchanges foster a closer relationship between locals and the fire service. Additionally, firefighters commended the young business owners for their optimistic outlook and attempts to make the neighborhood's residents smile.

The Avenel Fire Department announced the passing of former Chief and Life Member Steve Terebetsky, whose many years of service had a profound effect on both the department and the community. Terebetsky joined the department in 1976 and devoted almost 50 years to the fire service, according to officials. He worked his way up to become Chief of the Department in 1986, and in 1996 and 1997 he was the President of the Fire Company. He has supported generations of firemen as President of the Avenel Fire Company Relief Association since 1998. Throughout his tenure, Terebetsky taught numerous firefighters about apparatus driving, pump operations, and firefighting techniques. He was regarded by department members as a mentor, educator, and leader.

The Cedar Grove Fire Department honored firefighters and service members whose sacrifices are still remembered by the department and community on May 26th by holding their yearly Memorial Day service at the department's Firefighter Memorial. According to officials, firefighters erected memorial flags in honor of fallen comrades, such as Ernest Neuschaefer Sr. of Company 1, the department's lone line-of-duty death in 1953, and Franklin Sekulic of Company 2, who died within the last year. Members also paid tribute to the 343 firefighters who died in the September 11 attacks.

After the event, firefighters went to Cedar Grove Parkway to lay a wreath in memory of department members who fought in World War II, including Company 1's Lloyd Smith.

CHFD FF Zachariah Katz removed a cat safely from the fire building and gave it a check before reuniting it with its owner.

Extensive Overhaul Required at Cherry Hill All-Hands Fire CHERRY HILL, NJ - At a little past 2:00 p.m. on June 22, 2026, the Camden County Fire Alarm Room dispatched the Cherry Hill Fire Department to Kresson Road for the report of a dwelling fire.

CHFD Battalion JUMP TO FILE# Chief Steve Kinky 062326139 arrived at 509 C Kresson Road and reported an exterior fire that appeared to be extending into a two-story building.

First due companies confirmed the fire extended into the building and the mansard style roof. The building was set back from the road. Although the first due units had longer hose stretches, they made quick work of knocking down the bulk of the fire, but the fire did extend into the mansard roof.

Extensive overhaul was required from the exterior and interior to get ahead of the fire. A cat was safely removed from the building and reunited with its owner.

Haddonfield, Mt Laurel, and Westmont units assisted the CHFD. Other surrounding units were able to cover Cherry Hill while the CHFD was committed to this fire. The fire was place under control at about the 35 minute mark.

East Windsor Fire Co. Handles Morning Vehicle Fire EAST WINDSOR, NJ - Members of East Windsor Vol. Fire Company No. 1 responded to a reported car fire at the intersection of Old Trenton Road and Route 571 on June 3rd. Station 42 was sent out at around 10:06 a.m., according to officials. Engine 42 arrived and discovered a passenger car completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters prevented additional risks at the scene by swiftly deploying a handline and controlling the fire. There were no reported injuries.

Quick Knockdown Prevents Extension of Electrical Fire at Closter House CLOSTER, NJ - On June 5th, firefighters responded to a reported structure fire on Yale Place after smoke was observed coming from the side of a residence. Upon arrival, crews found that the home's electrical service had caught fire. Firefighters quickly investigated the interior of the residence to determine whether the fire had extended into the structure and confirmed that it had been contained to the exterior service area. Mutual aid companies from the Southside group operated at the scene for less than an hour before the incident was brought under control and units returned to service.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS FIRE DEPARTMENT

High-Angle Rescue Team Responds to Fatal Incident at State Line Lookout ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ - On June 14th, members of the Englewood Cliffs Fire Department, serving as part of the East Bergen Rappel and High Angle Rescue Team, responded to State Line Lookout in Alpine following reports of a person who had gone over the cliff. Technical rescue specialists carried out a coordinated rescue and recovery operation, which was completed later that morning. The East Bergen Rappel and High Angle Rescue Team is made up of highly trained personnel from Closter EMS, Cliffside Park Fire Department, Edgewater Fire Department, Englewood Cliffs Fire Department, Fairview Fire Department, Fort Lee Fire Department, and Ridgefield Fire Department.

ALLENDALE, NJ - On June 29th, the Allendale Fire Department responded to a confirmed roof fire at a local nursing home, with mutual aid units from Waldwick, Ramsey, Ho-HoKus, and Saddle River assisting on scene. Upon arrival, crews quickly assessed the situation and initiated an aggressive response to contain the fire at its point of origin. Thanks to coordinated efforts and swift action, the fire was brought under control within minutes, preventing extension into the structure and limiting potential damage. Operations focused on ensuring the safety of residents and staff while crews completed suppression and checked for any hidden fire. No injuries were reported.

Utility Worker Escapes Injury After Live Wires Fall on Truck in Allendale ALLENDALE, NJ - Following a passing storm on June 12th, the Allendale Fire Department responded to many occurrences throughout the borough, including a serious emergency on Hillside Avenue.

According to officials, reports of downed power lines and a car fire prompted the dispatch of Squad 935. When firefighters ar-

rived, they discovered that a utility worker was trying to restore power in the area when live electrical wires fell onto his truck.

Alongside utility workers, crews guarded the area and dealt with the dangers. Firefighters con-

tinued to perform overhaul operations and support attempts to safely reopen the route until the wee hours of the morning.

The utility worker was able to leave the scene safely, and no injuries were reported.

Grill Fire Prompts Mutual Aid Response in Franklin Lakes WYCKOFF, NJ - On June 21st, the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department responded to a residential fire caused by a grill fire that spread into the house, using Truck 241 as part of a mutual aid assignment with the Franklin Lakes Fire Department.

According to officials, firefighters from the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department finished fighting the fire while the truck company helped open the building to look for any concealed fire extensions. Truck 241 was released from the scene and put back into service once it was confirmed that the fire had been completely put out and that no more extensions were needed.

There was a time when an instructor was teaching his students to do an operation. Someone asked him about his qualifications, and it was found out that he did not have the certification to actually do the training for what he was teaching.

So that meant that he was training the people to do what they would have no certification or authority to do. Did the instructor understand the liability he was opening himself and the training center too? But the instructor thought that since he was the instructor, he would not listen to the higher authority.

There are other leaders of organizations, who have a title and some education and think that they are the all-knowing entity. They boss people around and have people slowly do more and more unethical and then illegal actions. The people listen to them because they put themselves in the posture of the ultimate authority.

That reminds me of a story that Jesus talked about going to a wedding banquet. He discussed taking the seat of lower honor because if you decide to take the seat of higher honor and someone comes that is honored more by the host, how embarrassed will you be to be moved to a seat of lower standing? It is better to take the set of lower standing and have the host elevate you in front of others, publicly showing your worth.

There are so many people who think so much of themselves and that is the only honor that they should receive.

Jesus stated that He was here to serve and not to be served. He also discussed that the person who puts himself first will be last.

It's a simple thing that we need to understand. It is called humility.

We should be humble enough to know that we do not know everything. We can't know everything.

We need to have the wisdom to seek advice from those who are highly trained with more experi-

ence, who are considered the experts in the field. But even when we are considered experts in the field, we still should not be full of ourselves.

Did you know that if you enter a horse paddock and you have the wrong attitude that the horses will keep you in check? They can sense what a person is like and if you come in with the wrong attitude, they will chase you out.

Are you humbling enough to know that you don't know it all? Are you strong enough to say that you are not all that? Are you a servant leader or a bully leader?

I want to mention, before we part, a deputy chief that I know.

When I met him, he was a battalion chief and you could tell, just by looking at him and watching him that he was the man in charge. The men that he has served with and the men that he is responsible for hold him in high regard, and that can be that is because he holds them in high regard. I have watched him take a call from the union president and express concern about a serious condition. The chief reassured that he was looking out for the men. The deputy chief is so respected that many people want to serve with him, when they cannot respond with the apparatus. To me, it also means a lot that he has a Biblical verse on his dry erase board, that he lives by and that he picked out his badge number reflecting that verse.

Please remember to stay humble and not full of yourself. I understand that we may do some amazing things, but many times, it is just the performance of our duty.

Firefighters in Frankford Control Three-Story House Fire in 15 Minutes FRANKFORD, NJ - The Frankford Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire on June 25th in conjunction with mutual aid departments.

According to officials, the firstarriving chief asked for a working fire assignment after confirming that there was fire coming from the front of a three-story wood-frame house. Shortly after, a second alarm was sent out to send more person-

nel to the area. After launching a vigorous interior attack, firefighters contained the fire in about 15 minutes. Second-alarm companies were released when crews finished overhaul and mop-up activities after the situation had stabilized.

The Beemerville Fire Department, Sussex Fire Department,

Hardyston Township Volunteer Fire Department, High Point Regional EMS, Wantage Township Office of Emergency Management, Montague Volunteer Fire Department, and other mutual aid organizations were commended by department officials for their support. Additionally, officials offered their support to the residents who were impacted by the fire.

A Quick Knockdown in Lodi LODI, NJ - On July 5th at 5:46 a.m., the Lodi Volunteer Fire Department & Lodi Police Department were dispatched to 119 Route 46 west for an activated commercial fire alarm. Upon arrival of Chief Garzon, a 360 was conducted with no signs of smoke or fire from the exterior. Engine 615 arrived shortly after to access the Knox box when a fire was discovered inside the business. Crews made entry by forcing the door. One attack line was stretched inside to extinguish the fire in minutes to prevent more damage to the building. No injuries were reported. Lodi Fire Prevention is investigating the incident.

Five Ducklings Safely Rescued from Storm Drain at Fair Lawn Condo Complex FAIR LAWN, NJ - On Saturday, June 27th, an alert postal carrier observed a mother duck and her 5 small ducklings walking along his route through the Blue Ridge Manor Condo Complex. As they were walking near the curb line, he observed 2 of the ducklings fall into a storm drain and notified police.

Fair Lawn PD dispatched Fair Lawn Rescue Squad under the command of Chief John Blair, to assist in removing the ducklings from the storm drain. As they re-

moved the grates from the drain, the ducklings went further into one of the drain pipes which went under the lawn of the condo complex.

At first they attempted to force them to one end of the pipe with a high force blower, with negative results. Finally after approximately one hour, Fire Co. #3 was dispatched to the scene to assist. With

the use of their booster line, they were able to produce enough water pressure to move the ducklings to the end of the pipe where they were able to be removed safely with the use of a net.

Units were back in service in approximately 1.5 hours. No one was injured and the ducklings were happily removed and set free in a nearby wooded area.

ELIZABETH, NJ - Members of the Hillside FMBA assigned to Tour 1 responded to a reported working structure fire with confined people in the 1000 block of North Broad Street, May 30th. As soon as they arrived, firefighters joined the rescue and suppression efforts. While fire attack teams tried to limit the fire, crews searched the building and successfully evacuated its occupants. Without any more delay, the issue was brought under control.

TENDER ENGINE WITH FOUR-INCH TANK TO PUMP We focus this month on a vehicle that is somewhat unique. The Freewood Acres Fire Company in Howell Township (Monmouth County) has in service a Rosenbauer tender engine on a Peterbilt 389 chassis featuring three rear axles, a 20,000-pound steerable axle plus two 60,000-pound axles. It has a Cummins X15, 600 hp diesel engine, a Hale, 8FG 3,000-gpm pump and a 4850-gallon water tank. There is a four-inch tank-to-pump, four LDH discharges and a rear 10-inch dump valve. It also has a four-inch direct tank fill. It replaced a tractor-drawn tanker that was sold to Daretown in Salem County. It is called a “Tender Engine” rather than a “Pumper Tanker” because it does not qualify as a pumper as it does not have all of the required equipment to make it one.

In other photos, we stay in Freewood Acres to feature their antique. It is a 1955 Ward LaFrance 85T pumper formerly from the Wilson Fire Company in Peckville, PA. Freewood Acres had one similar to it and they use this one for public relations and other purposes that antiques come in handy for.

Remaining in Howell, we feature from their sister company, Adelphia, their tractor-drawn tanker which has a 1986 Heil trailer with upgraded Kenworth T880 tractor which was modified by Marco Equipment Sales with a 1250gpm PTO pump and a four-inch front discharge. The trailer appears to be an MC-312 which among commercial trucks normally carries corrosives. It has ring stiffeners around the tank. It carries 6,000-gallons. The fourth vehicle is also from Adelphia and is an EONE HP-100 platform quint. Specs on this truck include a Cyclone chassis, Cummins X15, 565 hp diesel engine, Hale Qmax 2000-gpm pump, front bumper line, three crosslays (two 1 ¾ and one 2 ½-inch) , UPF 400-gallon water tank, TFT electric platform monitor, Amdor roll-up compartment doors, Smart Power 8 kw generator and both Whelen and Fire Tech lights.

Then also in Monmouth County, we feature a Spartan ER pumper from East Freehold FC 2 in Freehold Township.

Specs include a Gladiator LFD chassis with 20-inch raised roof cab, Cummins L9, 450 hp diesel engine, Hale Qmax 2,000-gpm pump with top mount panel, front bumper 2 ½-inch discharge, TFT Hurricane monitor with an Extenda-Gun, Pro Poly 1,000-gallon water tank, ROM roll-up compartment doors and Whelen scene lights.

We then go to Clifton in Passaic County to present Engine 4, a Pierce Enforcer 500/750 pumper and EMS 8, a Ford E-450/P.L. Custom Medallion, Type III ambulance.

In apparatus news, Kinnelon (Morris County) has received an E-ONE Typhoon pumper. Garfield (Bergen County) has ordered an E-ONE Typhoon 2000/530 pumper. Florham Park (Morris County) has ordered an E-ONE Select Series pumper on a Typhoon chassis. The other is the 1995 International 4900/Marion Body rescue from Peapack-Gladstone (Somerset County) to Woodland Township Fire-EMS in Burlington County.

Fire Code Inspections – Part 2 IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

With some basics in place from last month’s Fire Code Inspections Part 1 we can now explore an actual inspection and what may occur on a given inspection. This article will be from the perspective of a rookie fire code inspector and how to go about being successful in that role.

The first step is to ask yourself what are you inspecting; extinguishers? Alarm systems?

Egress? Just as important as what is being inspected would be where (in what setting) are the inspections; local businesses? A college campus?

New construction?

An incoming inspector can continue to use past record formats which can be based on the location and/or types of issues likely encountered at a given setting.

By all means do not be hesitant to suggest and/or implement more efficient changes. An inspector should always strive to improve the inspection process recognizing that in some cases, there may not be any choice.

The NYS Education Department uses this form for inspection of schools that would literally take an “act of Congress” to change.

Although keeping paper records are usually necessary an inspector moving to digitize would be a move in the right direction making sure to have back-up copies. Consistent with good record keeping would be developing your own quick reference guides or “cheat sheets”. These can help make an inspection proceed more smoothly but more importantly when an inspector develops their own materials it facilitates learning and memorizing necessary standards. This would be largely dependent on the employing agency and/or the experience of

the investigator. Using a checklist during an inspection will always result in missed violations. In fact, according to Town of Brighton Fire Marshal Chris Roth using a checklist “Will cause an inspector to walk past a stack of dynamite while looking for a fire extinguisher.”

Chris further advises to take a more wholistic approach when conducting a fire code inspection and to let the building “talk to you” rather than focusing on single items on a list. Focusing on a checklist during an inspection may also open the door for a client to walk you past a violation or something they don’t want you to see. Perhaps a locked door that a good inspector will insist on seeing what is in that room.

Before even going out to a site though it is important to thoroughly go over any past inspection records to view when the most previous inspection took place. More importantly past records will show the most frequent violations that have taken place and what compliance efforts have been taken to address those violations. Note that most if not all NFPA standards have language indicating how often an inspection should take place.

For example, NFPA 10 governs fire extinguishers that must be inspected monthly while NFPA 25 talks about standpipe, sprinkler systems and fire pumps all of which have different inspection frequencies.

Reviewing past records will also help to establish a rapport with any client an inspector is responsible to examine. Establishing rapport does not necessarily mean being friendly or not applying accountability. Clients will try and take advantage of the new inspector so be prepared. This is

why past records and a prior review are so important because an inspector will then see who is honest, accepts responsibility for violations and works to correct them as opposed to a serial excuse-maker.

Picture this conversation: Inspector: I noticed there is a lot of inventory in your storeroom potentially blocking egress.

Store owner: Yeah, we just got a lot of new inventory delivered yesterday and we always get everything processed and put away to avoid that.

Inspector: Really? Because it appears there always seems to be inventory delivered on the day of inspection and the records I reviewed yesterday indicate five violations in the past two years that even when given the opportunity to correct didn’t get done.

Remember what your goals are as a fire inspector though. It isn’t necessarily to go in “guns a blazing”, shutting down businesses and removing tenants from their homes although that could happen. Yes, fire marshals have to deal with violations but should strive to keep businesses open and residents in their homes which in turn keeps people employed, paying taxes and contributing to their community.

What about actually issuing a violation though? Do fire marshals have any discretion when doing so? That answer is two-fold. On the one hand establishing rapport will go much further in not only reducing fire code violations but also getting those business owners and landlords to remedy any existing issues. On the other hand, if a violation is observed and recorded then it must be issued because the potential result is just too great to ignore.

This brings us to the wording of any violation. Any violation should NOT be worded such that any remedy will occur within 30 days because that allows an unnecessary and potentially dangerous window for unsafe conditions to continue. Rather, any violation should be worded such that any remedy be done so IMMEDIATELY and that re-inspection will occur in 30 days and/or as the schedule allows.

The latter closes the gap and requires prompt attention.

A fire code inspector should always keep in mind the bigger picture. Why are these inspections important? Lastly, Fire Inspectors also provide preventative safeguards for firefighters. For example, the discovery of contractors using CSST, a cheaper but thin-walled gas piping system that according to DeWitt Deputy Fire Chief Tim Cowan has been responsible for multiple fires and at least two LODDs (see attached online Power Point – used with permission).

This pumper was designed to fit in one of their firehouses that is on the NJ historical list and is still operated today with Squad 7. New deliveries include to the Franklin Township Police (Somerset County) a Freightliner M-2, two door walk-in command unit with side and rear entry doors and partition door. It has a Cummins L9 diesel engine, a Quadra Mfg., Big Foot #QE-2 vehicle leveling system, Girard G2000 electric acrylic awning, slide-out/drop down room, four work stations, galley with coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave, climate control, surveillance camera system including a light tower, Winegard #A3-2000 air 360 broadcast TV antenna, Whelen scene lights, 6 kw Onan #12.0 HDKCD2209 Quiet Enclosed diesel generator and a Will Burt #NS 3.0 600 WB 300 2 x 300 120/240 light tower. Middlesex County received a Hi-Water roll off emergency vehicle featuring a Freightliner 114SD chassis with Cummins X12 diesel engine and 22-foot-high rescue platform with full length benches on both sides. They are prepping for delivery a hazmat spill recovery truck for Middlesex County. It has a Freightliner M2 chassis with Cummins L9 diesel engine, Morgan Dry Freight 18-foot van body nominal including a side door and steps, a power tailgate

and internal up fitting of shelves and storage compartments by Mickey Truck Bodies plus Whelen scene lights.

NJEV has delivered to the Wanaque FAS (Passaic County) a P.L. Custom Medallion Type III ambulance on a Ford E-450 chassis. Also, the Plainsboro Fire Department (Middlesex County) received a P.L. Custom Classic 170 on a Ford F-550 chassis.

Fire & Safety Services reports the following Pierce orders: for New Brunswick (Middlesex County) a stock Enforcer pumper, for Point Pleasant Beach (Ocean County) a Velocity 100foot mid-mount tower, for Ocean City (Cape May County) two Enforcer pumpers, for Fredon (Sussex County) an Enforcer dry-side tanker and for Raritan Township (Hunterdon County) an Enforcer 107-foot tandem axle Ascendant ladder. Pierce deliveries include to Perth Amboy (Middlesex County) two Arrow XT pumpers, to Egg Harbor City (Atlantic County) an Enforcer 107-foot single axle Ascendant ladder, to Chester Township (Morris County) an Enforcer tanker/pumper, to Roselle Park an Enforcer pumper and to Clark an Enforcer 100-foot mid-mount tower (both Union County).

Laureldale Fire Rescue Assists at Fully Involved Weymouth Twp. Structure Fire WEYMOUTH TWP., NJ - Laureldale Fire Rescue units were dispatched on a mutual aid assignment to the Dorothy section of Weymouth Township for a fully involved structure fire, June 12th. Engine 18-33 assisted on scene with fire suppression and overhaul operations, remaining at the scene for approximately two hours before returning to service. Crews worked alongside neighboring departments to bring the fire under control.

Alpine Firefighters Assist Technical Rescue Recovery at State Line Lookout ALPINE, NJ - In June, the Alpine Fire Department responded to assist the East Bergen Rappel Team with a recovery operation at State Line Lookout along the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Firefighters supported the technical rescue effort in the rugged cliffside terrain, working alongside specialized rescue personnel during the extended operation. Crews remained on scene for several hours before the incident was concluded and units were released. State Line Lookout, located atop the Palisades cliffs overlooking the Hudson River, is a frequent location for technical rescue and recovery operations due to its steep and challenging terrain.

Alloway Township Fire Company personnel joined the Bureau of Fire Prevention of the City of Bridgeton Fire Department on June 24th to assist the L.E.A.D.E.R.S. Camp at Camp Edge. According to officials, Ladder 19 and Tender 19 took part in the community outreach event, where firefighters taught campers about fire machinery, personal protective equipment, and the function of the fire service. Additionally, children got the chance to participate in an interactive learning experience by climbing the department's aerial ladder while being supervised by firefighters.

Firefighters Battle House Fire in Cedar Grove CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Callers reported smoke coming from a house on May 29th, prompting the Cedar Grove Fire Department to respond to a reported residential structure fire. Firefighters arrived at about 7:18 p.m., according to officials, and confirmed that the fire was operational. To make sure the fire was completely put out, crews stretched handlines, set up a water supply, carried out main searches, carried out vertical ventilation operations, and finished a thorough overhaul. While personnel remained dedicated to the scene, mutual aid crews supplied fire protection coverage for the township and helped at the scene.

Firefighters from the Washington Borough Fire Department and members of the Washington Township Fire Department in Warren County participated in Man vs. Machine training, led by P.L. Vulcan Fire Training Concepts LLC, in June. The practical session concentrated on methods for rescuing people who are impaled by objects or stuck in equipment, situations that can happen at construction, industrial, and agricultural sites. While collaborating with nearby responders, firefighters received training in stabilization, patient access, and extrication techniques. A Norfolk Southern Safety First Grant provided funding for the training.

Camden Battles All Hands Fire BRIGANTINE FIRE AND EMS DEPARTMENT

Members of the Brigantine Fire and EMS Department Dive Team recently completed training focused on black water search and recovery operations, some of the most challenging conditions faced by rescue divers. The exercises emphasized navigation, communication, and recovery techniques in zero-visibility environments, helping strengthen overall team coordination and operational readiness.

CAMDEN, NJ - At approximately 5:35 p.m. on June 20, 2026, the Camden County Fire Alarm Room transmitted a Camden box for a reported fire at 553 Chestnut Street. First arriving units encountered a two-story ordinary constructed dwelling heavily involved and extending to a larger attached two-story similar constructed building. Both buildings had previous fires. First arriving units operated with two-and-a-halfs and deck guns while leaving room for Tower Ladder 3 in the front of the building. Tower Ladder 3 operated with its master stream from Division A and Ladder Company 1 operated its aerial stream from Division B. The bulk of the heavy fire was quickly knocked, but companies had to operate for extended times due to the unsafe structural condition and it being a complete defensive operation. A primary search of the first floor of the original fire building and Exposure D proved negative.

Three employees of the Town of Westfield Fire Department were recently honored for reaching 10 years of service. Captain/Emergency Medical Technician Michael Walsh of Tour 3 was joined in commemorating the milestone by Captain/Emergency Medical Technician Ryan Dullea and Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician Bryan Crawford, both assigned to Tour 4.

Members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department celebrated Firefighter Jake Couto, a member of the Class of 2026, on his graduation from Governor Livingston High School on June 18th.

According to officials, Couto showed a commitment to his studies and his community by effectively juggling the demands of becoming a firefighter and finishing his high school education.

Firefighters Efstathia "Ash" Andriopoulos-Dodd and Matthew VanDerveer received recognition from the Raritan Township Fire Company on June 13th for obtaining their Firefighter I certificates. According to officials, VanDerveer finished Class 26-1, whereas Andriopoulos-Dodd graduated as a member of Class 25-2. To prepare firefighters for emergency response, the Firefighter I program needs more than 200 hours of classroom teaching, training in practical skills, and testing. Both members continued to assist with department operations and attend to emergency calls during their training.
