Fire Rips Through Norwood Home, Injures Homeowner and Two Firefighters Norwood - A heavy black column of smoke was visible for miles as a fire engulfs a home in Norwood Tuesday afternoon.

A Battalion 2 North box was dispatched around JUMP TO FILE# 4pm to 2 17th St for 051726139 a house on fire called in by a nearby contractor.

First arriving PD units found heavy fire showing from the attach garage of the home and a 75year-old homeowner outside with burns to his hands and face. As first arriving fire units arrived on scene, the fire had spread though out the home and heavy fire was showing from multiple floors of the home. Crews stretched multiple lines and set up ladder pipes on arrival. A second alarm was requested, and incoming units were asking to bring in more water as crews on scene battled water pressure problems. Harrington Park Ladder, Old Tappan Tower and Closter tower all set up in front of the structure. Demarest Engine stretched two lines though the back yard from the street in the rear and attack the heavy fire venting from the Charlie side. A third alarm was transmitted shortly after bringing additional manpower. Multiple collapses occurred within the home before one ladder pipe and one tower were put into operation and was able to knock down the heavy fire conditions. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours hitting hot spots. The homeowner was transported to Hackensack Medical Center for burns, and two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. Mutual aid from northeast Bergen County and Rockland County Ny assisted on scene and covered at multiple towns firehouses. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

If you were like me or any of the thousands of our brothers and sisters growing up, you wanted to be a firefighter. The itch could have started early in childhood or midteens, it doesn’t matter, it just got there and you acted upon it.

You prepared both physically and mentally, you took several department tests and finally you got the call. You spend the next six months at the training academy.

Mornings start with physical training, then classroom, drill ground and EMT. Finally, you graduate from the academy and get your station assignment.

Several months go by and you get sent out a few times to cover other spots in the department. You don’t mind because, you’re a FIREFIGHTER. Then it happens, you get moved to the med unit. You feel every bit of excitement leave your body like you’re melting. You grab all your gear, bedding and whatever else you think you might need for the next 24 hours because the med unit is at another station.

As you drive over to the station, you start thinking the last time you saw this truck was when it was at the shop when it first came in.

You’ve never been in it, drove it or even know what’s in it. You think to yourself, how can I be placed on a unit that I know nothing about.

Yet as you pull into the station parking lot, that thought fades.

You walk into the station, find the station officer to let him know you are here. He introduces you to your partner for the shift. Your partner shakes your hand and invites you to help him do the daily check out. Now is the fork in the road that decides your fate, not only for this shift, but future assignments.

Having been on both sides of the fence, I can tell you with certainty that being on the med unit is not a death sentence. But it is how YOU handle it that will determine how it turns out. Below I’ll touch

on how you can make this your own.

The first thing you need to do is accept it. Your department has decided to expand its mission and as a member of the department you must expand with it. I always like hearing the “I did not sign up for this”. The fact of the matter is YES, you did sign up for this. You applied, tested for, and trained for the opportunity to help people; well this is part of helping people. The business of the fire department is to be there for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, whether their house is on fire or they are having a heart attack.

Second, get involved. While it’s true that this was not your choice assignment, it is assignment. You need to make every attempt to know what is on the truck and where it is. You did the same thing when you got to your first station, so this should be no different. Don’t be afraid to “lay hands” on the equipment; all of the equipment. Take the time to learn how things work, for example the stretcher. Yes, I know that sounds silly but, I’ve had to teach firefighters that were assigned to the med unit with me how the stretcher works. There is no shame in asking; as a matter of fact, now would be the perfect time to ask, not when you’re on a CPR call. In fact, that is one of the first things I go over with members doing their first shift on the truck. Nothing is worse than having to watch your partner struggle with something and then you have to redirect your attention to help him and not your patient. Go over every inch of the truck, from the cab to the compartments, to the rear doors. You will thank yourself later.

Finally, treat this assignment just like any other. You are there to help others, whether you like the detail or not. Even if you’re unhappy being there, don’t show it. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are depending on you. Who knows, you might even like it.

Two-Vehicle Crash Snarls Traffic in Ho-Ho-Kus ATLANTIC, NJ - Members of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle MVA at the intersection of Hollywood Avenue and North Franklin Turnpike, May 10th. Upon arrival, crews secured both vehicles and worked to contain fluid spills, mitigating potential hazards and ensuring the safety of those on scene. Firefighters remained in service while awaiting tow operations to remove the involved vehicles.

Michigan: David Haverdink, 74 Rank: Chief Incident Date: Dec. 23, 2025 Death Date: Dec. 25, 2025 Fire Department: Hamilton Fire Department Initial Summary: At approximately 5:00 p.m. on December 23, 2025, Chief David Haverdink responded to a medical call at a residence. As he was preparing to leave the scene one hour later, Chief Haverdink was struck by a vehicle. His colleagues immediately began emergency care, and Chief Haverdink was transported to a hospital.

Chief Haverdink succumbed to his injuries at the hospital two days later on December 25, 2025.

Washington, DC: Keith T. Long, 58 Rank: Battalion Fire Chief Incident Date: Feb. 4, 2026 Death Date: Feb. 4, 2026 Fire Department: District of Columbia Fire and EMS Initial Summary: Soon after completing a 24-hour shift, Battalion Fire Chief Keith Long went to complete an annual stress test as required by the District of Columbia Fire and EMS. During the stress test, Battalion Fire Chief Long suffered a medical emergency. He was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

California: Daniel "Danny" Cook, 45 Rank: Fire Apparatus Engineer Incident Date: Dec. 31, 2025 Death Date: Dec. 31, 2025 Fire Department: CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department Initial Summary: At approximately 5:30 a.m. on December 31, 2025, Fire Apparatus Engineer Daniel "Danny" Cook along with other units from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire. While on scene, Engineer Cook suffered a medical emergency. A mayday was called, and emergency care was immediately provided. Engineer Cook was transported to the hospital. Despite efforts from medical professionals, he was pronounced deceased later that morning.

New Jersey: Howard Bennett, 61 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Feb. 5, 2026 Death Date: Feb. 5, 2026 Fire Department: Camden Fire Department Initial Summary: While preparing to leave a marina after fire department training, Firefighter Howard Bennett fell into the Delaware River and became trapped under ice-covered water. Firefighter Bennett was rescued by crews and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

New Mexico: Brittany Hathaway, 36 Rank: Firefighter/EMT/Dispatcher Incident Date: Jan. 20, 2026 Death Date: Jan. 22, 2026 Fire Department: Cliff-Gila Fire Department Initial Summary: On January 20, 2026, Firefighter/EMT/Dispatcher Brittany Hathaway suffered a medical emergency while responding to a medical call.

Firefighter/EMT/Dispatcher Hathaway was transported to a local hospital where she passed away on January 22, 2026. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

North Carolina: Dale Malone, 66 Rank: Firefighter/Safety Officer Incident Date: Feb. 10, 2026 Death Date: Feb. 10, 2026 Fire Department: White Level Rural Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter/Safety Officer Dale Malone responded with the White Level Rural Fire Department to a residential fire as a passenger in a fire department vehicle. Upon arrival at the scene but while still inside of the vehicle, Firefighter/Safety Officer Malone suffered a medical emergency. Firefighter/Safety Officer Malone was treated and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

LOCAL FIRE BUFFS ARE ORGANIZED INTERNATIONALLY UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

Fire buffs may be maligned by some elites, but many are very dedicated to supporting the fire service at many levels. And yes, they are organized on an international basis.

On Saturday, June 13th, members of Region 9 of the International Fire Buff Association (IFBA) held a meeting at the newly renovated John T. Brennan Fire Museum, in Bayonne.

Fire buff organizations from all over the United States and Canada are divided into regions. This area is known as Region 9.

Region 9 clubs include the Bayonne Fire Canteen, Bell & Siren Club (East Orange), Countywide Emergency Response (Bergen County), Fire Bell Club of New York, Gong Club (Jersey City), North Jersey Fire Canteen Support, NYCFire.net, Second Alarmers of Philadelphia, Signal 22 Association (Trenton) and the Society for the Preservation & Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America (national).

“The purpose of the IFBA is to serve as a common ground for fire buff, law enforcement, rehab emergency service, firefighting historical groups, other fire service groups and individuals, allied emergency services and their officers and members,” according to their web page.

In addition to rehab, organizations in this region are also part of fire museums, conduct apparatus musters and parades, plus sponsor valor awards. The IFBA holds an annual convention in a host city covered by one of the organizations in the USA or Canada. Members visit fire departments and buff organizations to exchange notes and observe how fire departments outside of their own areas operate.

They may bring home some new ideas on how to improve operations in their own back yards.

Members of some of these organizations traveled to the Bayonne museum to discuss various topics.

This included better ways to handle rehab operations at emergency scenes, nutrition and healthy items to serve, etc.

In addition, there was a long discussion on improving communications at a major incident where multiple rehab/canteen units have been dispatched to. For example, a large scale fire involving several buildings and/or blocks. What organizations are at the scene, their location, supplies needed, etc. This discussion was initiated due to the operations at the recent 12-alarm fire in Belleville.

seum and the many historical firematic items on display. This includes two hand-drawn pieces of fire apparatus. There are plenty of photos on display to take you back in time to view those members and apparatus that served before us. The museum, located at 10 West 47th Street, is open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Retired city Battalion Chief Robert Kleczynski was on hand to welcome the visitors.

This firehouse was built in 1875 and housed hand-drawn Hook & Ladder Company Number 1. In 1976, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

These groups of buffs consist of blue collar workers, businessmen, firefighters, police officers, EMTs, etc. They also have mechanics.

They are needed to keep the antique apparatus rolling! They volunteer their time, and they are proud of what they do and what they accomplish.

DOWNS: Seven members of a Pine Hill family were injured during an early-morning fire in an Erial Rd. dwelling, June 2nd. One resident, a 67-year-old man, jumped out of a second-floor window, according to NJ.com. He jumped 15feet after climbing out the window and was hospitalized with burns.

UPS: The Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Arts & Culture (JCPRHAL) has named Captain Robert Nunez, Jr., of Squad Co. 1, the Firefighter of the Year. “For

over 31-years, Captain Nunez has exemplified courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the residents of Jersey City.” In addition, Captain Nunez gathers outdated equipment from fire departments around the area to ship to fire departments in impoverished areas and provides training.

DOWNS: Six people were injured as the result of a fire in a Piermont av. dwelling in Hillsdale, June 3rd, according to the Daily Voice.

The six residents were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, authorities said. Firefighters used master streams to knock down the heavy volume of fire and prevent flames from extending to exposures.

UPS: In Secaucus, a young man climbed the cliffs at Snake Hill in Laurel Hill Park, June 9th. He was unable to get back down. Firefighters used an aerial ladder to get him back down to safety, according to the Patch.

DOWNS: River Edge first responders answered a call for a serious MVA on Kinderkamack Rd. & Midland av., June 3rd. They found a vehicle on fire after it left the road and struck a building. The driver and a passenger suffered serious injuries. A resident of an apartment in the building also suffered minor injuries, officials said.

UPS: Thomas Penn has been promoted to fire lieutenant in Summit.

Andrew Mallon is the city's new firefighter.

DOWNS: A fire at a collection car dealership on Industrial av., Hasbrouck Heights, June 9th, resulted in two burn victims being hospitalized.

Two firefighters were also taken to the hospital. The fire appeared to have started in a car inside the building, according to Independent Online News. One burn victim, that was removed from the building by firefighters, was listed in critical condition.

UPS: New firefighters in Ewing Township are: Sawyer Williams, Kyle Moody, Edward Nickelson, Douglas Sotovando, Nia Agusto, Bryce Haber, Lorenzo Petrone and Joshua Smith.

DOWNS: A fire consumed a Scott av. dwelling in the Melrose section of Sayreville, June 14th.

Fire broke through the roof and several master streams were used on the flames, according to reports.

UPS: In June, the Kearny mayor and town council recognized Firefighter Justin Erezuma as Firefighter of the Year.

DOWNS: A lightning strike caused a fire that involved a Hamilton Street strip mall in Franklin Twp., June 15th. The multiple-alarm blaze impacted the entire mall, according to the Daily Voice.

UPS: The Secaucus Fire Depart-

ment will receive five sets of firefighting gear through the 2026 Ricochet Regional Gear Giveaway.

This is an initiative supporting volunteer fire departments through Schwarber's Neighborhood Heroes Fund. The award was secured through an application submitted by Lt. Donald Cieciuch.

DOWNS: A fire at a Cloverdale av. home in Paramus, June 15th, killed two cats and two men were injured. The fire broke out on the rear deck of the house. Two men attempted to extinguish the fire with a hose before the fire extended to the basement, according to the Daily Voice.

UPS: New firefighters in Princeton are Adam Szyszko, Madison Luck and Patrick Esmerado.

DOWNS: A man's body was recovered from along the Palisades at State Line Lookout in Alpine, June 14th. The East Bergen Rappel team assisted in recovering the body of a man in his 30's who was believed to have jumped to his death, according to the Daily Voice. The Rappel & High Angel Rescue Team is made up of rescue specialists from the Closter EMS, Cliffside Park, Edgewater, Englewood Cliffs, Fairview, Fort Lee and Ridgefield fire departments.

Ridgefield Firefighters Control Structure Fire in 30 Minutes RIDGEFIELD, NJ - The Ridgefield Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on the west side of town at around 2:56 p.m. on May 2nd. According to officials, crews arrived and contained the fire in about 30 minutes, stopping it from spreading. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The agency acknowledged the Countywide Rehab Unit for helping firefighters on scene and praised mutual aid organizations for their help during the incident.

MARGATE CITY, NJ - On May 14th at approximately 6:05 p.m., the Margate City Police Department and Margate City Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Jerome and Fulton Avenue involving a juvenile operating an electric-powered vehicle.

Firefighters/EMTs provided immediate medical care at the scene. Due to the nature of the juvenile’s potential injuries, it was determined that transport to a

pediatric trauma center was necessary. A medevac helicopter from SouthStar Air Medical Helicopter was requested, and a landing zone was established at the Margate City Recreation Field Complex.

The juvenile was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Officials later confirmed that the

juvenile was discharged from the hospital late that evening and was recovering at home.

Officials expressed gratitude to all agencies involved in the response, including the Margate City Police Department, AtlantiCare EMS, the crew from SouthStar Air Medical Helicopter, Longport Volunteer Fire Department, Margate City firefighters, and the Margate City dispatchers.

Person Injured as Boat on Trailer Erupts in Flames in Strathmere STRATHMERE, NJ - A reported boat fire involving an injured individual prompted Strathmere Fire Rescue to be dispatched to the intersection of 32nd Street and Bay Avenue, May 8th.

Firefighters arrived to discover a boat on a trailer that was heavily engulfed in flames. One person was transported to a regional trauma center for unknown injuries. As they checked potential extension dangers involving nearby vehicles and equipment, crews swiftly contained the fire and secured the surrounding area. The Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office is looking into what caused the fire.

Members of the Elsinboro Fire Company commemorated the graduation of local eighth-graders from the department's Future First Responder Program on May 22nd. According to officials, the event gave participants a chance to interact with firefighters and EMS members while also honoring the kids' efforts and commitment throughout the program. Graduates received certificates of completion, had lunch with department personnel, saw how first responders respond to an emergency dispatch, and took a tour of the fire station and equipment.

I had to go to a conference, and I asked a friend if I could get a ride with him. (I know that when I go someplace, I have my own way of traveling and my own timetable. I usually like arriving early.)

He told me what time he wanted to leave, which meant that we were going to arrive late. Well, I was able to understand. The nurse which cares for his son with disabilities arrived late. He mentioned he had a problem with his vehicle, and I was able to take care of it right away because I had the same challenge with my vehicle. Then we stopped for fuel.

We got busy talking about a project that he was putting together, and I had to remind him which exit to take. We were still talking, another exit was coming, and he almost missed it. A woman would not let him get near the exit, so we took another exit. As we were looking for our way, I noticed that I might be in the area where I used to spend some time. The directions made us make a turn and we went past the exact place and brought back memories. We continued to our destiny and found out that the route was probably faster into the back entrance of where we had to go.

When we arrived, I had a chance to see some friends that I had not seen for years. I sat in the back at the last table. I was not so concerned about talking with people, so I sat at a table. I had no idea what impact that decision would have on me. At the next table, about three or four feet from me was a law enforcement K-9 handler. His partner, a 20-month yellow lab, came to me and put his head near me. I had the opportunity to pet him on the head, and he leaned into me so that I could really pet him all over. I do not know what the dog sensed, but he stayed near me for a good part of the day. Even a few times in the morning, the dog decided to put his paws on my shoulder and lick my face. (Note: the speaker was able to see what was going on with the dog and she stumbled over part of her presentation.) The dog was part of the crisis team and later went and visited some other people but kept coming back to me. During the afternoon, West laid down by my feet.

I used to have a dog, but it was over twenty years since I had real

quality time with a dog. West reminded me how much I needed the interaction with animals and the warmth that a dog brings.

When we left the event, the mapping system took us a different way than we expected but I saw that I already had the day off and I would not let it or the traffic bother me, after all I was not driving.

Many things did not go the way that we expected.

We need to realize that just because our day did not go the way that we wanted it to go, does not necessarily mean that it was a bad day. On this day, we found a way that was faster to get where we were going and, on the way back, my friend and I had a good conversation and of course I could not forget what West brought to me. He showed me how precious time with an animal can be and how much they are dialed into the emotions of people around them.

He also reminded me that I may need to get another dog, as companion and therapist.

There are many times that some people discount the true benefit of having time with animals can really benefit not only people but also animals. You can easily research all the benefits of the interaction between humans and animals. They also have animal assisted therapy. You may not need to have a therapy or service animal but may just want to spend time with a furry friend who loves.

I know that by lunch time, I was covered in dog hair and felt so much better than I have for a long time.

Is it really a bad day? How are you looking at it? What are you expecting? There are some people that have spent their entire life sucking on a lemon and they experience nothing but sour days. Give yourself

permission to expect a good day and look at the situation through new glasses and look for the positive.

I remember John Maxwell telling the story that a boy living on a farm. The mother would come into the boy's room to wake him up. One day the mother came in and said, "Good morning, it's going to be a beautiful day". The boy said that it was going to be a horrible day. The mother let the boy go back to sleep.

The boy got up and went to the kitchen and expected breakfast. The mother indicated that breakfast was served at the time when the boy refused to get up. The mother indicated that since the boy indicated that it was going to be a horrible day, it was her job to make sure that the boy got exactly what he expected, a horrible day. And she sent him back to bed, no television, no radio, nothing, just sleep. Since the boy would normally be at school, the boy did not get any lunch. The boy was just supposed to sleep and not allowed to do anything. The next day, before the mother came in to wake him up, the boy was up, washed, dressed and waiting for his mother. The mother said, "Good morning, it's going to be a good day." The boy said, "Good morning, it's going to be a great day,” and the boy made sure that it was a great day and appreciated everything that he had.

You usually get what you expect, when you have control of how you view events in your life.

One Trapped After Early-Morning Rollover Crash in Fairfield FAIRFIELD, NJ - The Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department was called to Passaic Avenue at around 5:15 a.m. on May 2nd in response to a rollover motor vehicle collision with entrapment. One person was trapped inside an overturned car when Squad 1, Rescue 3, and Engine 1 arrived. Firefighters stabilized the car and attempted to safely remove the patient from the wreckage, according to officials.

On May 7th, EMT Jon received recognition from Basking Ridge Fire Company No. 1 and EMS for his 20 years of volunteer work and thousands of emergency calls. Jon became a New Jersey EMT in 2006 while working locally and began serving as a daytime responder. A longtime mountain climber with experience in wilderness rescue, Jon continued volunteering regular 12-hour shifts over the years. Additionally, he had a number of leadership roles, such as EMS Captain and EMS Lieutenant.

After passing the National Registry EMT exam and finishing his probationary year with the department, Firefighter Jelani Sanchez was acknowledged by members of Jackson Township Fire District No. 4. Sanchez was the first employee hired without a background in public safety, according to officials, and he entered the district without any prior fire or EMS expertise. While working with district crews, he earned his Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Hazardous Materials, and EMT certifications since joining the department. Sanchez obtained his black helmet shield and full membership status after a year of service. His cheerful outlook and mechanical abilities, which continue to support department operations, training, and daily response actions, were also emphasized by department authorities.

Adelphia Firefighters Attend Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service ADELPHIA, NJ - Members of the Adelphia Fire Company attended the yearly Monmouth County Fallen Firemen Memorial Service and Awards Ceremony on May 18th, along with firemen from throughout the county. During the memorial, firefighters paid tribute to Philip H. Dittmar, an Adelphia firefighter who lost his life while performing his duties. According to officials, the yearly ceremony honors Monmouth County firefighters who gave their lives while serving their communities.

Heavy Fire Showing on Arrival at Merchantville Job MERCHANTVILLE, NJ - At approximately 10:12 A.M. on May 19, 2026, the Merchantville Fire Department Task Force 12 was dispatched to 215 Woodlawn Avenue for the report of a dwelling on fire. The Camden County Fire Alarm Room received several JUMP TO FILE# calls reporting this 052026148 fire.

Merchantville Engine 12 arrived and had fire showing from a two-story, single-family dwelling.

Pennsauken Engine 1132 was right there with Merchantville FD and an interior attack was initiated.

There was a report of a victim possibly trapped inside, but searches proved negative. Westmont firefighters assisted with roof ventilation. Units from Maple Shade, Cherry Hill, Lenola, and Cinnaminson assisted with fireground operations.

Hose lines were deployed, water supplies established, searches conducted, ventilation and overhaul were performed, and the fire was placed under control in less than an hour.

Woodland Park Responds to Car Fire with Two Exposure Buildings Also Involved in Fire WOODLAND PARK, NJ The West Paterson Fire Department responded to a reported car fire in the driveway of 47 Whippany Avenue off McBride located between two structures, May 23rd.

On arrival, a well-involved car was quickly spreading to adjacent structures. The fire extended to two homes, with extensive damage to the Exposure B and into Exposure D. Two hand lines were

deployed and heavy fire was knocked down.

An additional hand line was stretched into the home on the right side of the car fire. Heavy fire was quickly knocked down, and crews began an interior operation.

Mutual aid from Little Falls, Totowa, and Paterson responded to the fire scene, and additional towns were called for house coverage. Searches were conducted of the two homes. Firefighters extinguished all visible fire in 15 minutes, but operated for two hours on scene with extensive overhaul.

Second Alarm Fire Guts Home in Northvale NORTHVALE, NJ - At 2:14 PM on May 20th, the Northvale Fire Department was dispatched to 404 Crest Drive in the borough. On arrival, heavy fire was showing from the A/D corner of a frame dwelling on both floors and across a front porch. A second alarm was sounded, bringing JUMP TO FILE# additional units 052626141 from several Bergen County and Rockland County, N.Y. departments.

Several lines were stretched and the roof was laddered. Within about 30 minutes, the heavy fire was knocked down.

Companies overhauled and the Arson Squad was requested for investigation. No injuries were reported.

Camden Firefighters Battle Vacant Warehouse Blaze CAMDEN, NJ - At approximately 3:18 P.M. on June 2, 2026, the Camden County Fire Alarm Room struck a box for the Camden Fire Department for the report of a warehouse on fire in the area of 2nd and Erie Street. Responding companies could see the smoke column from many JUMP TO FILE# 060326105 blocks out.

Camden Engine Co. 1 was first to arrive and reported a two-story warehouse with fire through the roof. This vacant warehouse is located off of the roadway in a heavily overgrown, hard to reach area.

Ladder Co. 2 and Engine Co. 1 were able to position to fight the fire. Ladder Co. 3 was able to position on an adjacent property with access to the opposite side of the building.

The fire involved mostly the roof area since there were very little contents in the building.

Ladder Co. 2 utilized its aerial and Engine Co. 1 had several lines stretched. The fire was placed under control in about 30 minutes.

There is a prologue followed by 17 chapters, an epilogue, appendix, acknowledgements and finally a page about the author. It is a story about a woman born into poverty in Ohio who eventually became a captain in the Broward County, Florida Fire-Rescue Department.

The book starts out from her childhood and goes right through to her retirement and beyond. She got appointed in 1987. This book in my opinion is written in a completely honest way. It does not in any way look to compete women against men in the fire service. It

simply consists of memoirs about her years in service riding in many different stations and various different neighborhoods, from slow to extremely busy with fires, EMS and other emergencies. While I realize that memoirs are recollections of a person’s career with many experiences of calls which a potential reader might perceive as repetitious, I can assure you that although it may seem that way, each involves human beings and sometimes animals that are loved by others. A serious and fatal accident for instance is still a tragedy for the person or animal in each particular incident no matter how many we may have read about in other books. This book deals with calls that were tragic, near tragic, or otherwise. Some will stay with a responder mentally for years because we empathize with the families and friends of those unfortunate individuals and can imagine if it happened to one of our families or friends. In fact, this book and ones like it should be read by the general public just to educate them to the fact that this work is not always pleasing. Much of the book also relates to a female doing a job amongst males and the attitudes that had to be dealt with, especially at the beginning. Many of these changed when it was proven that a female could do the job in a professional way. The price is reasonable and the content educational, especially for a woman considering emergency service as a career.

Bruce A. Tynan was honored on May 26th by members of Cataract Hose Company No. 1 and the Hackettstown Fire Department for his exceptional 70 years of service. According to officials, Tynan joined the department in 1956 and is still involved today, frequently attending events and functions. From 1989 to 1990, he held the position of Fire Chief, where he was instrumental in the department's growth, training initiatives, and rookie firefighter mentoring. According to department officials, Tynan is the most senior member of the Hackettstown Fire Department and has gained the respect of many firemen over the years thanks to his devotion to public service. Members congratulated him on accomplishing the outstanding goal.

Woodbridge Fire Department Hosts Daisy Scouts WOODBRIDGE, NJ - On Wednesday, May 20th, the Woodbridge Fire Department hosted a meeting of Daisy Scouts. Just as the girls were arriving, the FD got a call for mutual aid to Avenel, so they got to see the apparatus JUMP TO FILE# respond! Once they 052526131 left, Fire Inspector Mike Cowan led the girls into a room to watch a video on fire safety. He took the time to explain all the points to the girls and answer their questions.

After that, they went into the kitchen where they discussed kitchen safety; then watched another video on making a home escape plan in case of fire. Then FI Cowan gave the girls and their parents a tour of the firehouse, ending up on the apparatus floor where Engine 3 had returned. FI Cowan was joined by FF John Alves in explaining the types of apparatus they have. All the girls took turns sitting in the chauffer's seat and learned how to operate a fire extinguisher.

By then it was time to go home. All the girls were gifted backpacks with FD related goodies inside. The troop and parents donated water, gatorade and snacks to the FD. Finally, the girls had made thank you cards at a previous meeting and they gave them to the firefighters and the Chief who promptly had them displayed on the glass of the watch room.

Paterson Firefighters Battle 2nd Alarm on Coral St. PATERSON, NJ - Shortly before 4:00 PM on June 6th, Paterson dispatched an alarm for a fire at 80 Coral St. A three-story 20 X 50 frame multiple dwelling had fire on the rear porch, extending to the top floor.

Two hand lines were quickly stretched. The heat of the day prompted a second alarm for additional manpower to be transmitted. Companies appeared to be making progress, but the smoke condition from the third floor and cockloft intensified. At about 4:20 PM, as conditions continued to deteriorate, all members were

withdrawn.

Operations went defensive with one tower ladder, one ladder pipe, and two 2.5” lines in operation. Flames consumed most of the third floor and roof of the structure before being brought under control. Crews were rotated out for rehab. No serious injuries were reported and the cause is being investigated.

At 8:59 p.m. on June 4th, Palisades Park firefighters quickly knocked down a fire on the second floor of a two-story warehouse on West Grand and Ruby. Mutual aid from Cliffside Park, Ridgefield and Leonia assisted. Three firefighters were evaluated at the scene for dehydration. County Wide Emergency Response Team provided canteen services. The fire is under investigation under the Bergen Co Arson Squad.

Quick Knockdown at Kitchen Fire in Atlantic City ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - On May 26th, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire at an occupied and operating restaurant on Sheridan Avenue, where initial attempts by staff to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful.

First-arriving units encountered UMP TO FILE # smoke showing from J052726150 the front entrance, while all occupants had safely evacuated prior to fire department arrival. A Working Fire assignment was requested, bringing mutual aid from neighboring departments.

Engine 733 stretched a handline and quickly located and extinguished the fire within a large commercial oven. Damage was primarily contained to the oven itself, which was destroyed, along with some water damage to the surrounding area.

No injuries were reported, and crews operated safely throughout the incident.

Car Fire Turns to Arson in Wallington WALLINGTON, NJ — A vehicle fire brought Memorial Day to a dramatic close in Wallington on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Firefighters responded to Lincoln Place after reports of a car fire. Upon arrival, crews found a Ford Mustang fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and extinguished the fire.

During the investigation, authorities determined that the vehicle had been intentionally set on fire. Investigators alleged that the owner’s ex-girlfriend ignited the vehicle and fled the scene before

The Bergen County Arson Squad responded to assist with the investigation. The suspect was later apprehended and taken into custody. She was transported to the Bergen County Jail, where she was being held pending trial.

Camden All Hands Rowhome Fire CAMDEN, NJ - At 5:33 A.M. on June 3, 2026, the Camden County Fire Alarm Room dispatched the Camden Fire Department to 1116 Baring Street for the report of a dwelling fire.

BC Phil Tally was first to arrive and reported heavy fire showing from the second floor of a two-story, middle-of-the-row, ordinary constructed dwelling. Engine Co. 8 was the FDE, secured its own water supply, and stretched the initial hand lines. Ladder Co. 1 went to the roof for ventilation and to channel the fire away from the attached exposures. The searches were negative, and one member sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital. The fire was placed under control in about 20 minutes.

CAMDEN, NJ - At just before 3:00 A.M. on May 29th, the Camden Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a fire in the area of Ferry Avenue and Jackson Street. Responding companies updated the assignment for a fire at the EMR scrap metal junkyard, located at 1400 S. Front Street. Inside the scrap yard are large piles of scrap waiting to be shredded and prepared for recycling. First arriving units reported one of the large piles of scrap on fire. The scrap yard fire suppression system was activated, but was quickly overwhelmed. CFD units utilized a yard hydrant, as well as a street hydrant almost 1,000-feet away. Aerial streams were used as scrap yard personnel used heavy equipment to pull the pile apart to assist with extinguishing the fire.

Truck Crashes Into Building, Entraps Driver in Glen Gardner GLEN GARDNER, NJ - On May 29th at around 11:10 a.m., the Glen Gardner Fire Company No. 1 was called to a serious car accident on Main Street's southern end. A work truck collided with a structure, and there JUMP TO FILE# were reports of a 053126118 trapped occupant.

Five firefighters from Squad 12 and Brush 12 were the first suppression and rescue units on scene, according to officials. Within three minutes of arriving, the Squad 12 team extricated the patient and handed over patient care to Hunterdon County paramedics and staff from South Branch Emergency Services. Before joining efforts at the crash site, Engine 12 went to Glen Gardner Park to help establish a medical helicopter landing zone.

The damaged building was temporarily secured by Hunterdon County Urban Search and Rescue personnel until long-term repairs could be accomplished.

The New Jersey State Police, Hampton Fire Company, Hunterdon County Hazmat, and Hunterdon County OEM were among the several organizations who helped at the scene.

In Piscataway, the North Stelton Fire Company has placed into service a 2026 Pierce Velocity 7010 cab model 2000-gpm/750-gwt/30-gft apparatus assigned as Engine 21.

The raised roof cab has six seats and cabinet space. The extended front bumper has an intake and discharge gate, and there are three cross-lay beds. Two have waterfoam capability. There is also a water-foam rear discharge. It has a total of four hard suction hoses. Two mounted in compartments on each side of the rig. It has roll-out trays, roll-out tool board, rear vision camera, ground ladders stored in a hose bed compartment and a rear 9000-lb portable winch, plus a deck gun. It carries an extrication tool, cribbing and 8 kW generator. There is also a de-con nozzle mounted on the officer's side of the apparatus. It was sold by Fire & Safety Services.

Additional features include a pre-piped aerial water way, aerial controls at the pump panel, torques box ladder and pike pole storage, plus tool box located inside a compartment. There is a stokes basket mounted on the chauffeur's side of the aerial ladder. The aerial ladder sign on this side of the rig features a blue background and NY Giants logo. Cardiff Firefighters Contain Car Fire Threatening Nearby Woods EGG HARBOR TWP., NJ - On May 17th, firefighters from the Cardiff Vol. Fire Co. responded to a vehicle fire on Fork Road, arriving to find a car fully engulfed in flames with a ruptured gas tank. Crews from Rescue-1517 and Engine1512 quickly stretched lines and worked to bring the fire under control as it began spreading into the surrounding woods. The intense heat also caused damage to overhead utility lines, adding to the hazards on scene. Firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented further extension. No injuries were reported. Units operated under the command of Assistant Chief Craig Thompson, with support from the Egg Harbor Township Rescue Squad and Police Department.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Members of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Berkeley Heights Fire Department arrived at the Watchung Reservation on May 16th in response to a reported medical issue involving a hiker on the History Trail. Rescue-1 and Ranger-1 had to respond to the isolated site, according to officials, in order to help workers reach the patient. To find, treat, and securely remove the patient from the trail, firefighters, rescue squad members, paramedics from Atlantic Mobile Health, and the Union County Police Department collaborated. In less than an hour, responders successfully finished the rescue and moved the patient to an ambulance that was waiting on Sky Top Road.

After that, the patient was brought to a nearby hospital for more assessment and care.

Paterson Honors Those Who Died in the Line Of Duty PATERSON, NJ - The annual PFD Memorial Service was held at Fire Headquarters on June 7th to remember and honor the 37 members of the department who made the supreme sacrifice from the original volunteer department to the current career department. Opening remarks by Chief Alejandro Alicea, Congresswoman Nellie Pou, Mayor Andre Sayegh, and Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale were given followed by the Roll Call of Heroes. The ceremony moved to the front of Headquarters for the wreath laying at the Memorial. A playing of Taps closed the ceremony.

Fire Code Inspections – Part 1 IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

Fire code inspections are preventative in nature. They are designed to catch potential issues before a fire could occur. This is in contrast to a fire investigation that would take place after a fire to determine cause and origin. Fire code inspections may involve routine assessments such as monthly reviews of fire extinguishers, emergency lighting or possibly ensuring the positioning of inventory, aka fire load, in a warehouse. Inspections are typically done for one of three reasons: new construction, renovations (including alarm and sprinkler system installation) or a received complaint.

Each agency would have a specific emphasis. For example, the Education Department would focus on primary and secondary schools and more specifically, fire doors, extinguishers, egress and fire drills for students and staff. Child Protective Services would conduct life and fire safety inspections to assess if a home is safe for children including the presence of extinguishers, safe heating appliances and proper storage of flammables like matches, lighters and potentially combustible chemicals.

The private sector also employs several positions that would conduct fire inspections including but not limited to colleges, racetracks and insurance companies. In fact, many municipalities rely on third parties for electrical and plumbing inspections (relative to fire suppression systems) and for several reasons.

Fire code inspectors operate under several titles including but not limited to Fire Officer (as an employee of a municipal fire department), Fire Marshal, Building Code Inspector, Fire Protection Specialist and Fire Technician. The guiding principles for what are more commonly known as fire code compliance are state building/fire codes and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

Significantly, in order for the latter to have any “teeth” they would have to be incorporated into the state fire code. Otherwise, it is just a recommendation and would not be enough to legally have a business/home owner, contractor etc. comply with the codes.

The first is a given municipality may not have the personnel to conduct fire inspections for every contractor. Barry Suydam, owner of Suydam Construction LLC out of Burnt Hills NY, indicated for this article that the vast majority of inspections to ensure compliance of the residential renovations and remodeling by his company are fire related. Secondly, there may be a training factor if a local code enforcement officer does not have the training for all aspects of a fire code inspection and are better left to a more seasoned professional. Even when private employers such as a college have fire technicians there may still be oversight required by a public agency to ensure compliance.

Fire code inspections are not completed solely by state fire agencies. There are several public agencies that would complete fire inspections and each may have very different objectives. Usually, the public agencies are at the state and county level notwithstanding local fire departments. In New York State for example, the following agencies would participate:

One concept to be discussed from the onset is “grandfathering” or as it is currently known as a pre- existing non-conformity. These terms refer to situations when a structure is guided by codes and standards that were in use at the time of construction as opposed to current codes and standards. For this reason, inspectors will usually keep copies of older codes to ensure compliance is within the applicable standards.

This does not mean that just because a building is fifty years old that it is not subject to more modern- and present-day codes.

There are several factors that would negate a structure being

grandfathered i.e. pre-existing non-conforming status relative to fire codes. These would include but are not limited to the following situations:

ducting fire code inspections to emphasize that they are done so for the safety and protection of residences and businesses and not some “gotcha moment”.

This is not to say that there won’t be some negative out-

comes such as potential fines or driving up construction costs but by and large the various fire codes and NFPA standards are designed, (sometimes changed) and implemented to prevent a tragedy from occurring.

If a building/structure was never in compliance with fire codes then it would not be grandfathered because it was never legal to begin with. This would include a situation when an inspector mistakenly passes a structure as acceptable. A second circumstance would be access to an electrical service disconnect. This is actually a national code issue. An example would be an apartment building where previously only the landlord would have access to an electrical panel shut off whereas nowadays every tenant has to have access to the shutoff in the event of an emergency.

Further, if a structure abandons its use for a year (this may be a local code) then it would lose its grandfathered status. If a bed and breakfast were to cease operations as such for a year, any new use after that would negate any pre-existing, non-conforming status and would then have to comply with new codes such as having to install a sprinkler system. Lastly, if a structure changes substantially (which can be highly subjective) it could subsequently lose its grandfathered standing. A good example would be old circuitry either losing (by industry standards) or the revocation of its Underwriters Laboratory (UL) status.

Some fire departments will conduct preventative inspections for their district residents. If a local fire department has the personnel to conduct these invaluable inspections it is suggested that a waiver be utilized to limit liability and to thoroughly document all findings. In this example firefighters would, at the request of a homeowner, visit and assess the home for potential fire hazards and safety measures. A four-gas meter could be used around any gas appliances and a receptacle tester to ensure outlets are properly grounded. Further recommendations could be fire extinguisher presence and placement, GFI outlets around water sources in kitchens/bathrooms and depending on the structure a fire suppression system.

Flames Threaten Tiki Bar as Outbuilding Burns in North Cape May NORTH CAPE MAY, NJ Townbank Fire Company firefighters arrived at 91 Beach Drive in response to a smoke investigation on April 29th. When Chief 61 arrived, a detached outbuilding was heavily involved in a fire that was spreading to an adjacent tiki bar. In order to support operations, a working fire assignment sent in extra firefighters from Rio Grande, Erma, Villas, and Cape May. Using the Ocean County Fire Academy's Class A burn structure, members of the Forked River Fire Department performed a live burn training exercise. Before extending 1½-inch handlines, crews worked as the first-due company, finishing size-up operations and coordinating Division 1 and Division 2 searches. During the evolution, firefighters rotated through a number of missions, concentrating on search and rescue, water can usage, response speed, suppression operations, and ladder installation for secondary egress.

Vehicle Enters Hackensack River Following Route 80 East MVA HACKENSACK, NJ - On May 18th at approximately 9:50 P.M., the City of Hackensack Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 80 East in- JUMP TO FILE# volving multiple ve- 051926147 hicles on the Hackensack River Bridge.

Units arrived to find one vehicle that had breached the barrier and entered the Hackensack River near the Ridgefield Park side, where the Ridgefield Park Volunteer Fire Department was already operating.

With rising tide conditions, multiple agencies deployed rescue boats, drones with thermal imaging, and an aerial ladder to search for the vehicle.

One person was located nearby by police, and the vehicle was later recovered by tow services. Assistance was also provided by the Hackensack Police Department, Teaneck Fire Department, and the Oradell Fire Department.

Fully Involved Vehicle Fire with Diesel Spill in Hammonton ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - On May 20th, Collings Lakes Fire Department provided mutual aid to the Town of Hammonton for a working vehicle fire in the area of Route 54 and the Atlantic City Expressway. Upon arrival of initial units, crews found a pickup truck pulling a trailer fully involved in fire, complicated by a significant diesel fuel spill. Tender 12-34 responded with a crew of two and remained on scene to support water supply operations if needed. Fire crews from Hammonton and Winslow Township worked to bring the fire under control and manage the hazardous fuel spill. No injuries were reported, and the Collings Lakes unit returned to service after standing by during the incident.

Edison Car Crash Causes Gasoline Tanker Inferno EDISON, NJ - At approximately 6:00 A.M. on May 17th, Edison Fire Department stations 1, 2 and 3 were dispatched to Interstate 287 northbound near exit 2A for a vehicle that crashed into a gasoline tanker carrying 8800-gallons of fuel.

While responding, the first due engine received multiple reports that the gasoline tanker and the car were fully involved, and had a column of smoke in the air,

and immediately requested Middlesex County Hazmat.

When Engine 1 arrived, they had two large areas of fire, fire in storm drains, and requested an additional engine. Fire also extended into the woods in Metuchen, which prompted a full response from Metuchen Fire Department.

Shortly after crews began attacking the fire, the Middlesex County Foam Task-Force and Middlesex County Tanker TaskForce were also requested due to the large amount of fuel on fire and the water needed. Crews from five counties and over 150 firefighters operated on the scene for over 5 hours.

MENDHAM, NJ - When Quint 3 was asked to help Brookside Engine Company 1 with a cat caught in a tree on April 29th, firefighters from the Mendham Fire Department were sent into Mendham Township. Quick Interior Attack Knocks Down Fire in Folsom Home ATLANTIC CITY, NJ Collings Lakes Fire Department responded as part of a multiagency assignment to a reported dwelling fire on Glenside Lane in Folsom Borough, May 21st.

Tender 12-34 arrived shortly after and established a water supply, supporting suppression efforts throughout the incident. Additional apparatus, including tender

Thanks to coordinated efforts and rapid action, the fire was brought under control without any reported injuries. Units later cleared the scene after completing overhaul operations.

NJEMSTF Pres Says Organization Does Not Exist Because of Terrorism The New Jersey EMS Task Force has been an integral part of the planning for the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament for more than a year, and the event, while significant in scope, does not define the organization, President Michael J. Bascom told attendees at JUMP TO FILE# the NJEMSTF’s an- 052926123 nual meeting.

“It requires our discipline, obviously, our commitment, and teamwork at every level within our group, whether you're employed, or deployed, whether you're engaging an area, or whether you're working from home or whether you are supporting us in between sessions, your involvement, your teamwork is critical to our success,” Bascom told the 150 members in attendance at the Hamilton Fire House in Neptune, NJ on May 19. “So while FIFA may define this year, it doesn't define who we are, because we do so much more, and we never stopped doing what we regularly do. ” Bascom noted that the groundwork for creating the NJ EMS Task Force, a statewide emergency services organization serving all 21 counties and beyond, began 25 years ago this fall. The organization's formation began in earnest in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and has grown to include 225 members from 60 career and volunteer host agencies throughout the state who respond to large-scale man-made and natural disasters.

“We bring capabilities that nobody else can, and nobody else should have to bring,” Bascom said.

“We have assets that are designed for the worst days, and we bring, more importantly, highly skilled, highly trained responders into situations that are beyond the scope of what our regular, and I don't mean this to be belittling, but beyond what any normal 911 EMS provider would be expected to provide.”

Bascom thanked the New Jersey Department of Health and its partners for their support. Attendees included NJDOH Deputy Commissioner for Public Health Services Dr. Novneet Sahu, Assistant Commissioner Dana Johnson, and Candace Gardner, director of the Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Also in attendance was Dr. Reynard E. Washington, Acting Commissioner of the NJ Department of Health, who thanked members of the NJ EMS Task Force, and said after a few weeks on the job, he “quickly understood the incredible value that the work you all do brings to the stage, not just in times of emergency, but when we are getting prepared for what's to come and events that might be happening.”

In 2025 and into 2026, the NJ EMS Task Force has responded to multiple assisted living facility evacuations, supported several wildfire responses, and helped hospitals and other facilities avoid evacuations by providing necessary support equipment and trained staff. All along, the team has done this while planning for the World Cup and the USA 250 celebrations, while preparing and updating statewide emergency plans.

New Jersey State Police Lt. Colonel Douglas Lemanowicz noted the lives the NJEMSTF touched through mass disasters such as Superstorm Sandy and others, “that's communities held together, when they might otherwise have come apart.”

Lemanowicz highlighted the partnership between the NJSP and the NJEMSTF, including their work together in the aftermath of Hurricanes Maria and Ida in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“It wasn't just two organizations that deployed. It was a unified team operating side by side under some of the most demanding conditions imaginable,” he said. “It would have been easy to work at each other instead of with each other. But that didn't happen because relationships built before an incident determined success during the incident. We don't rise to the occasion. We fall back to our training in our partnerships. So looking ahead, FIFA is not the finish line. It's a milestone.”

Pointing to the upcoming World Cup events, Lemanowicz said that “the billions of people who tune into

the World Cup will see the goals scored. The fan celebrations and the tournament. They will not see you.

They won't see the planning, the long hours, the quiet work that makes a massive event feel seamless. But in emergency management, success is often invisible. We do our jobs right, nothing happens. And that invisible success is the hardest kind to achieve, and the most important kind there is.”

Throughout the evening, Bascom, Vice President Jennifer McCarthy, and others stressed the ongoing need for sustainable funding

to keep the NJEMSTF mission ready. The organization operates on donations and funding from the NJ Department of Health and other grants, but those funds fall short of maintaining the team’s fleet of specialty response equipment, which is found nowhere else in the state.

Bascom, in discussing the formation of the NJ EMS Task Force decades ago, noted its importance to the state.

“While our growth was accelerated in the wake of a national tragedy, we did not define ourselves by that moment,” Bascom said. “We

do not exist because of terrorism. It exists because of preparedness. Because of foresight, and because a group of professionals, some of you are in the room, who came from all different parts of the state, and all their types of systems recognized the need. … What started as an idea became a mission. What became a mission is now a model. And it's a model that you continue to build upon every single day. Today, we stand as a national model. A model that's been copied is in many other states.”

The 200 Club of Morris County recognized four members of Netcong Fire Company No. 1 for their bravery during an ice rescue event in February 2025. At a ceremony honoring emergency responders from throughout the county, Past Chief Ray Bock, Assistant Chief Jeff Jozowski, Lieutenant Mike Kunkel, and Firefighter Miguel Pardo were recognized.

Firefighters from all around the county came together to celebrate service and sacrifice at the Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office Memorial Service and Medal Day, which was attended by members of the Englishtown FD. Chief Engineer Pasquale DiBennetto, the department's lone line-of-duty fatality, was honored during the ceremony. Awards for outstanding emergency responses were also given out.

Along with personnel from the Monroe Twp. Fire District #2 and Millstone Twp. FD, Lt. Jason Kole, Lt. John Spierto, FF/EMT Georgiy Zavalnik, and FF Anthony Fernandes were given a unit citation. The medal honored their achievements during a technical rescue at Millstone Twp. Middle School in March.

NEW APPARTUS FOR WANAQUE Two new Spartan Emergency Response apparatus are protecting the Borough of Wanaque in Passaic County.

Each is in a different station. One is a top mount pumper on a Metro Star chassis and the other is a top mount pumper/tanker on a Gladiator chassis. In other photos this month are Montclair’s new Engine 1, a Pierce Enforcer pumper as well as the former Engine 1, a Pierce Velocity pumper (Essex County). Moving forward we go to Hudson County and Kearny Squad 2, an E-ONE rescue pumper which rides out of the old headquarters on Kearny Avenue, and the last two are Jersey City’s Special Operations Unit riding as Rescue 1 until their regular apparatus returns and Reserve Engine 24, a 2001 Pierce Enforcer riding as Squad 4 until their regular unit is back.

Regarding the special ops truck, it is a replacement for a USAR rescue truck which became submerged at a mall during a flood in 2012 while doing evacuations. That was a 2006 Rescue 1 with a Spartan Advantage chassis similar to several that were built and distributed to cities which were part of the UASI program. This one however has a Spartan Metro Star chassis and as the story was explained to me, it had been ordered by MONOC but they never took delivery.

MONOC was a paramedic/EMT/transport company which operated in Monmouth and Ocean County. They started having financial problems and are now out of business. Jersey City was able to purchase it and had the extended front bumper removed and the original bumper from the destroyed truck was installed. As for Reserve Engine 24, it formerly served with the Iselin Chemical H & L Fire Company in Woodbridge Township (Middlesex County).

In apparatus news, the Freewood Acres Fire Company in Howell Township (Monmouth County) purchased and restored a 1955 Ward LaFrance 120T Model pumper which formerly served with the Wilson Fire Company in Peckville, PA. This pumper has a 750gpm pump, and 300-gallon water tank. It is similar to one that Freewood Acres had. In the same township, the Adelphia Fire Company (District 2) has in service a new tractor for their 1986 Heil 6,000gallon trailer. The tractor is a 2026 Kenworth T-880 with a PTO 1250-gpm pump added by Marco Equipment Sales.

It has a four-inch front discharge. It was sold by NJEV. The Meadowlands Fire Department (Bergen County) has received an E-ONE Metro 100 on a Typhoon chassis and for Engine 2 an E-ONE Metro Series pumper on a Typhoon chassis. The Town of Kearny (Hudson County) has ordered an E-ONE Typhoon Metro Series pumper with 1500-gpm pump and 780gallon water tank.

Linwood (Atlantic County) has received an E-ONE Typhoon stainless steel pumper. Also, Erma (Cape May County) received an EONE Cyclone tanker. Crews Perform Extrication at Serious MVC in Ridgefield Park RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ - The Ridgefield Park Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported MVA with entrapment in the area of Teaneck Road and Gordon Street on May 21st.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed one patient trapped in a vehicle pinned against a tree and telephone pole. Truck 2 immediately went to work using extrication tools while Engine 1 stretched a hose line for protection. Firefighters successfully removed the patient, who was then transported for further care.

Colesville Firefighters Contain Garage Fire with Quick Interior Attack WANTAGE TOWNSHIP, NJ Members of the Colesville Fire Company responded to a reported garage fire at around noon on May 14th.

According to officials, a second alarm was requested after a deputy from the Sussex County Sheriff's Office arrived first and confirmed that flames were visible. When firefighters arrived, they launched an

intensive interior attack that quickly put out the majority of the fire and stopped it from spreading.

A metal fire-rated door, according to department officials, was crucial in keeping the fire contained to the garage area and minimizing

damage to the remainder of the building. The department stressed how crucial it is to install fire-rated doors correctly in order to restrict the spread of fire.

Additionally, Colesville firefighters expressed gratitude to their mutual aid partners for their assistance on the scene.

Equipment Fire at Edgewater Park DPW Yard Quickly Contained BEVERLY, NJ - On May 9th, Engine 122 responded to a reported truck fire at the Edgewater Park Department of Public Works yard, which was later updated to a wood chipper and two trailers involved. Chief Meredith arrived on scene and confirmed the fire conditions. Engine 1222 completed extinguishment of the remaining fire. The incident is under investigation by the Edgewater Park Fire Marshal’s Office.

Quick Response Contains Gas Pump Fire at Sussex Delta Station SUSSEX, NJ - Colesville Fire Company personnel arrived at the Delta gas station on May 20th in response to a gasoline pump fire.

Firefighters were informed while responding, according to officials, that county communications was getting many reports indicating that the fire was JUMP TO FILE# growing.

While 060126116 New Jersey State Police officers worked to turn on the emergency fuel shutoff system, Deputy Chief Snook arrived first and verified that there was an active fire.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire and finished overhaul operations. According to department authorities, the emergency disconnect system's activation and the responding staff's quick actions were crucial in reducing the incident's severity..

Avenel House Fire Quickly Contained AVENEL, NJ - On Friday, May 29, 2026 at approximately 8:08 P.M., the Avenel Fire Department along with Woodbridge and Port Reading were dispatched to the 300 block of Ella Ave. in Avenel for a reported unknown type fire.

As initial units marked up, it was quickly upgraded to a possible bedroom fire. When patrol arrived, they advised they had heavy smoke showing and a working fire, along with an off duty firefighter confirming a working fire. Right after that, Avenel Engine 5-4 arrived as the first engine, and found a 1.5 story, wood-frame, single-family dwelling with heavy smoke showing from the A/D corner and requested the first alarm.

Crews immediately stretched a line and encountered heavy fire upon entry. The engine company had water on the fire in less than three minutes, while they continued to make the push to the main fire room. The bulk of the fire was knocked shortly after, with extensive overhaul being conducted.

Companies from Woodbridge Township and the City Of Perth Amboy operated on the scene for nearly 2 hours before being released.
