LAWRENCE, MA - On Sunday, July 12th, Lawrence firefighters were dispatched at 12:42 p.m. for a reported structure fire. Lawrence fire companies were clearing a fire alarm on Common Street when Car 21 Deputy Leduc reported to the Fire Alarm Office of heavy smoke in the Tower Hill section neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, a structure fire response was transmitted after multiple callers reported heavy smoke from the area of 486 Haverhill Street.

Richmond Brush Fire Quickly Contained Amid Dry Conditions RICHMOND, RI - On June 9th, the Richmond–Carolina Fire District responded to a reported brush fire in the Gardiner Road area, with Exeter Fire added due to the fire’s proximity to the town line. First-arriving crews found an active brush fire near an enclosed trailer. Firefighters worked to contain the flames before they could spread. Due to dry conditions and deep pine needles in the area, crews required additional time to fully extinguish and mop up hot spots. Responding units included Brush 614 with Fog 619, Tanker 615, Tanker 625, Engine 617, and Exeter Tanker 15.

WATCH HILL FIRE DEPARTMENT

Watch Hill Fire Department Assists Disabled Vessel in Long Island Sound WESTERLY, RI - On July 12th, the Watch Hill Fire Department responded as part of the New London Marine Group to the area of Ram Island in Long Island Sound for a 43-foot vessel that had struck an object and was rapidly taking on water.

dinated with the U.S. Coast Guard, Groton Long Point Volunteer Fire Department, and a local Sea Tow crew, while the Noank Fire Department maintained land-based command of the incident.

Firefighters assisted with dewatering operations using multiple portable pumps to help keep the vessel afloat and provided a safety escort as it was towed to a safe harbor.

No injuries were reported.

JAMESTOWN VOL. FIRE DEPARTMENT

Vehicle Fire on Jamestown Bridge Quickly Brought Under Control JAMESTOWN, RI - On July 3rd, Jamestown Vol. Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a vehicle fire on Route 138 eastbound on the Jamestown Bridge, near the center span. Chief 1 arrived to find a working fire, with smoke visible from a distance. Crews operated alongside North Kingstown Fire Department to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze.

Units remained on scene for about an hour to ensure full extinguishment. No injuries were reported.

CHOPMIST HILL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Chopmist Hill Volunteer Fire Department responded mutual aid to a house fire on Audubon Lane in Coventry, June 14th. Tanker 61 assisted with the tanker shuttle operation while crew members supported overhaul and extinguishment efforts. Seven members operated on scene for approximately four hours, while two additional firefighters remained at Station 60 to provide district coverage. The department also handled an EMS call and a gas leak during a busy operational period.

Bristol Apartment Building Damaged in Fast-Moving Fire BRISTOL, RI - Firefighters battled a rapidly spreading fire at a three-story residential building containing four apartment units after flames extended from a porch into the structure and quickly spread through all three floors. Crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions and launched an aggressive exterior attack before moving inside to extinguish fire that had traveled through wall voids and into the attic. All occupants safely evacuated the building before firefighters arrived after working smoke alarms alerted residents. One civilian and one firefighter were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. The fire was brought under control within an hour, and crews remained on scene conducting overhaul operations.

The cause remains under investigation by the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal.

Crews Operate at Early-Morning Structure Fire in Scituate SCITUATE, RI - Chopmist Hill Volunteer Fire Department responded mutual aid to a reported house fire on Talbut Road, alongside Hope & Jackson Fire Company and Potterville Volunteer Fire Department, May 26th. First arriving crews reported a well-involved two-story, wood-frame dwelling, with all occupants safely evacuated. Due to structural collapse prior to arrival, operations were conducted defensively from the exterior. A total of 13 Chopmist Hill members operated on scene for approximately four hours as crews worked to bring the incident under control.

1st Responder Newspaper honors and remembers emergency responders lost in the line of duty Texas: Britain James Reeves, 46 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Dec. 26, 2025 Death Date: Dec. 26, 2025 Fire Department: Fairchild Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Britain Reeves responded to a medical call at 1:40 a.m. and returned home from the incident around 2:30 a.m. Around 4:00 p.m. that same day, Firefighter Reeves’ wife found him deceased in a chair in the home’s garage.

Arkansas: Larry Dale "Muff" Mustion Jr., 44 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: Sept. 18, 2025 Death Date: Sept. 19, 2025 Fire Department: Luxora Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On September 18, 2025, at 9:15 p.m., Lieutenant Larry Mustion Jr. responded with the Luxora Volunteer Fire Department to an outdoor fire that was spreading toward a dry wooded area. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters packed up the hoses and returned to the station. The following day at 12:12 p.m., Lieutenant Mustion passed away after suffering a cardiovascular event.

Alabama: Alexander G. Trenier, 63 Rank: Deputy Chief Incident Date: Feb. 22, 2025 Death Date: Feb. 23, 2025 Fire Department: City of Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Initial Summary: On February 22, 2025, at 7:33 a.m., Deputy Chief Alexander Trenier responded to a residential fire call. After returning to the station, Deputy Chief Trenier reported that he was not feeling well and turned duties over to another chief. He then went home sick.

On February 23, 2025, family was unable to reach Deputy Chief Trenier by phone. When the family went to his house to check on him, they found Deputy Chief Trenier deceased.

New York: Laurence "Larry" Pude, 83 Rank: Fire Police Captain Incident Date: April 4, 2025 Death Date: April 4, 2025 Fire Department: Cambria Volunteer Fire Company Inc. Initial Summary: On April 4, 2025, at 10:26 a.m., Fire Police Captain Laurence Pude responded to the fire station at the time of an alarm. Fire Police Captain opened the station building for other responders which included opening all the truck bay doors. After the responding truck left the station, Fire Police Captain also completed other duties at the station in support of the incident and closed all truck bay doors.

Fire Police Captain Pude then responded to the emergency scene and provided traffic and scene management. Later that day at a neighboring fire company fundraising event, Fire Police Captain Pude suffered a medical event that caused him to collapse and become unresponsive. Resuscitation efforts began immediately. Fire Police Captain Pude was then transported to a local hospital where, despite all efforts, he was pronounced deceased.

New York: Joseph John Mazza, Sr., 47 Rank: Firefighter/EMT Incident Date: Aug. 22, 2025 Death Date: Aug. 23, 2025 Fire Department: Pocatello Mount Fire Company Initial Summary: On August 22, 2025, at 4:06 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Joseph John Mazza Sr. responded to an emergency medical call with the Pocatello Mount Hope Fire Company. The company returned to service from the incident at 4:50 p.m. On August 23, 2025, at 4:35 p.m., Firefighter/EMT Mazza suffered a medical episode at his residence. Firefighter/EMT Mazza was transported to a local hospital where he later died due to a cardiovascular event.

That photographer is a photojournalist and New York City native.

As the story goes, he was walking home from his parents apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan one day in 2024 when he came upon an incident involving a manhole with fire department activity. Intrigued by this, he

started taking photos which sparked a new dimension in his life. In short, he began taking photos at FDNY incidents, particularly of personnel following up by presenting the photos to them.

Their appreciation of this is what created this book. The book has no numbered pages. The activities took place in Manhattan and The Bronx in 2025. The descriptions are of the dates, number of alarms, street locations, names of the personnel and the fire company they were part of. Some photos are of the overall scene, while many others are isolated shots of firefighters on the sidelines doing what most fire photographers would not consider. Most fire photographers concentrate on the flames, but Benjamin in addition to that concentrated on individuals and groups of personnel. As the Forward by a lieutenant put it, it “captures the FDNY in its purest form-honest, raw, yet undeniably powerful.” The author also provides technical information regarding the film and camera he used, as well as settings. There are both black and white, and color photos. It is an enjoyable book giving tribute to “New York’s Bravest.”

TIVERTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

Improper Fireworks Disposal Deemed Cause of Tiverton Garage Fire TIVERTON, RI - On July 5th, Tiverton Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Deer Run Road, arriving to find heavy fire from an attached garage extending into the attic, with vehicles also involved. All occupants had safely evacuated prior to arrival.

With no hydrants in the area, a

tanker task force and additional alarms were requested to support water supply and manpower.

Crews conducted coordinated interior and exterior operations, bringing the fire under control and

completing overhaul.

No injuries were reported. The fire was determined to be accidental, caused by improper disposal of fireworks. Multiple mutual aid departments assisted at the scene, with rehab support provided for operating crews.

Quick Response Limits Damage in Tiverton Garage Fire TIVERTON, RI - A garage fire caused by improperly discarded fireworks was quickly contained by Tiverton firefighters on June 18th, preventing the blaze from spreading into the home's living areas.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire extending up the exterior wall of the garage and into the attic space above.

Firefighters brought the fire under control and confined damage to the garage and attic.

No injuries were reported. The Tiverton Fire Marshal’s Office deter-

mined the fire was accidental in nature and caused by the improper disposal of fireworks.

Mutual aid was provided by the Portsmouth, Fall River, and Westport Fire Departments, while the Middletown Fire Department covered Tiverton stations during the incident.

ASHAWAY VOLUNTEER FIRE ASSOCIATION

Ashaway Firefighters Battle Commercial Equipment Fire with Mutual Aid Support ASHAWAY, RI - On June 21st, the Ashaway Volunteer Fire Association responded to a reported vehicle fire on Woodville Road, where the first arriving officer confirmed a fully involved commercial stump grinder with fire extending into surrounding mulch.

Due to the size and fuel load of the equipment, additional resources

were requested, bringing an engine and tanker from the Hope Valley Wyoming Fire District and a tanker from the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company. Crews worked collaboratively to bring the fire

under control and conducted extensive overhaul to eliminate any remaining hot spots.

All units cleared the scene after operations were completed. The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate the cause of the fire.

Garage Fire Contained Before Major Extension in Jamestown JAMESTOWN, RI - Jamestown FD responded to a reported building fire on Cedar Hill Drive, with multiple callers reporting a vehicle fire inside a garage with extension into the structure. Upon arrival, command confirmed smoke showing and upgraded the incident, bringing in additional resources from North Kingstown. Engine 2, operating as the first-due company, deployed attack lines to both the garage and the living space above. Crews quickly knocked down the fire and initiated aggressive overhaul to prevent further extension into the residence. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ensure complete extinguishment. One individual was evaluated for minor injuries and declined further medical transport.

WEST GREENWICH VOL FIRE CO NO 1

Members of the West Greenwich Vol. Fire Company strengthened their vehicle rescue capabilities during a specialized training session focused on vehicle stabilization techniques. Firefighters tested a Rescue 42 all-in-one strut system and conducted practical exercises using Paratech struts, gaining valuable experience in securing damaged and unstable vehicles during emergency incidents.

Chopmist Hill Firefighters Assist at Scituate Structure Fire SCITUATE, RI - The Chopmist Hill Volunteer Fire Department responded to a working structure fire on Knight Hill Road as part of a town-wide response involving all Scituate fire stations, June 18th.

Upon arrival, JUMP TO FILE# crews from the Pot- 062026152 terville Volunteer Fire Department reported smoke showing from a one-and-a-half-story wood-frame dwelling and transmitted a Code Red. With Engine 62 out of service for repairs, Tanker 61, Brush 63, and Unit 68 responded. Firefighters assisted with overhaul and extinguishment operations, with 11 members operating on scene for approximately 1.5 hours.

The department extends its appreciation to the Special Signal Fire Association/Providence Canteen and the mutual aid departments that provided RIT, water supply, and station coverage assistance during the incident.

- 1RN NEWS TEAM In June, Woonsocket firefighters participated in a specialized training exercise alongside technical rescue teams from many Rhode Island departments at the Blackstone River Gorge in North Smithfield.

Wide-area search strategies and high-angle rescue operations in difficult terrain were the main topics of discussion. Crews rehearsed coordinating rescue operations, patient packaging, rope rescue systems, and finding fictitious victims.

In order to preserve vital life-saving skills, members of the North Scituate Fire Department participated in a CPR refresher course in June with members from the Chopmist Hill Fire Department.

Current CPR recommendations, patient evaluation methods, and emergency response protocols utilized in medical emergencies were all covered in the course.

CHOPMIST HILL VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

Lightning Strike Sparks Barn Fire in Tiverton TIVERTON, RI - On June 23rd, the Tiverton Fire Department responded to a reported brush fire in the area of Neck Road in Tiverton, where crews arrived to find a large barn fully engulfed in flames behind a JUMP TO FILE# 062426111 nearby property.

Firefighters quickly initiated suppression operations and brought the blaze under control in a short time, successfully confining it to the barn and preventing it from spreading to surrounding structures. Investigators later determined that the fire had been burning for an extended period before being discovered.

Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain, thunder, and frequent lightning, crews operated effectively, and no injuries were reported.

An investigation conducted by local and state fire officials concluded that the fire was caused by a direct lightning strike.

Turner Crews Quickly Extinguish Fully Involved Car Fire TURNER, ME - Turner Fire Rescue responded to a reported vehicle fire on Auburn Road on June 11th, arriving to find a car fully engulfed in flames in the northbound breakdown lane. Firefighters rapidly deployed hose lines and knocked down the fire within seconds of applying water. No occupants were inside the vehicle, and no injuries were reported. Route 4 traffic was temporarily shut down to ensure scene safety and later reopened once crews completed operations.

Multi-Agency Response Locates ATV Crash Victim in Sebago SEBAGO, ME - On June 19th, Sebago Fire & EMS responded to the area of Peaked Mountain Road and Folley Road for an ATV accident with injuries, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.

Due to limited communication and an unclear location, mutual aid was requested from multiple agencies, including Naples Fire-EMS, Standish Fire-EMS, Maine Warden

Service, Southern Maine Search and Rescue, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department.

Lifeflight of Maine was placed on standby, and Baldwin Fire covered Station 2.

Crews located the patient after an extensive search of wooded

trails. Additional assistance from Denmark Fire Department and Baldwin Fire was requested for a lengthy carryout operation.

The patient was packaged and transported via UTV and personnel to the awaiting ambulance following a coordinated multi-agency response.

Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Garage Fire in Cundy’s Harbor CUNDY'S HARBOR, ME - Cundy's Harbor Volunteer Fire Department responded alongside Orr’s-Bailey Island and Harpswell Neck fire crews to a reported structure fire on Gurnet Landing Road, June 15th. The first unit on scene reported smoke coming from the garage. Crews made entry, encountered active fire conditions, and quickly brought the fire under control. The garage and its contents sustained smoke and water damage, while damage to the main living area was minimal. No injuries were reported, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to assist in determining the cause.

Members of the Bangor Fire Department obtained national credentials as EMS Field Training Officers on June 4th after completing a three-day EMS Field Training Officer (FTO) course. According to officials, the curriculum taught the framework, instruments, methods, and ideas necessary for EMS field training. Adult learning principles, coaching techniques, trainee evaluation, effective feedback, and performance recording utilizing nationally accepted standards were all taught to participants. Officials commended EMS Division Chief Ogden, Firefighter/Paramedics Brichetto, Aucoin, Stahl, and White, as well as Lieutenant/Paramedics Titus and Layman, for their dedication to patient care excellence and professional development.

North Yarmouth Crews Extinguish Well-Involved Dumpster Fire

NORTH YARMOUTH FIRE RESCUE

NORTH YARMOUTH, ME On June 28th, North Yarmouth Fire Rescue responded to an outside fire at 373 Walnut Hill Road involving a well-involved 30-yard construction dumpster.

Chief 501 and B-57 arrived first JUMP TO FILE# and found the dump- 063026153 ster fully involved, with command established on scene.

An all-hands response was requested, bringing in additional support from Cumberland Engine 102, Pownal Square 3, and Yarmouth Engine 82.

Crews deployed handlines and established a hydrant water supply on Walnut Hill Road to bring the fire under control. Other responding units assisted with extinguishment and overhaul operations.

Officials said the fire was determined to be accidental and no injuries were reported.

North Yarmouth Assists at Third Alarm Building Fire in Casco CASCO, ME - North Yarmouth Fire Rescue’s Squad 51 responded mutual aid to the Town of Casco for a third alarm building fire, June 17th. Squad 51 operated on scene with a crew of four, assisting with fire suppression efforts alongside initial responding companies. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival and worked to bring the incident under control while protecting multiple exposures. Firefighters from multiple agencies successfully contained the fire and prevented further spread to surrounding structures.

Tremont Firefighters Battle Commercial Lobster Boat Fire in Bass Harbor BASS HARBOR, ME - Following reports of a fire near Thurston's Wharf on July 3rd, which was subsequently verified to be on a commercial lobster boat docked in Bass Harbor, the Tremont Volunteer Fire Department responded. To start suppression efforts, JUMP TO FILE# firefighters set up at 070726160 Bernard and Thurlow's Wharf's Tremont Town Dock.

According to incident command, the fire quickly moved from the stern to the pilothouse before the gasoline and hydraulic tanks burst. Throughout the lengthy overnight response, crews worked in tandem with mutual assistance organizations to confine the fire, safeguard adjacent boats and waterfront property, and maintain safe operations.

Alan Vol. Fire Department announced that Firefighter Paul Crandall passed away after battling cancer. According to officials, Crandall was a firefighter in Marion, South Carolina before moving to Maine, and he worked for the department for 10 years. Apart from his employment in firefighting, he was a member of the US Coast Guard for six years and worked with NASA on camera systems that were used to take pictures of lunar landing sites. Department members described Crandall as a dedicated firefighter whose positive attitude, commitment to service, and innovative ideas made a lasting impact on the organization.

North Yarmouth Handles Two-Car Crash NORTH YARMOUTH, ME - On July 2nd at around 11:59 a.m., North Yarmouth Fire Rescue responded to a two-vehicle collision close to 1018 North Road. One car had moderate frontend damage and another had moderate side-impact damage when Squad 51 and Ambulance 56 arrived. All of the occupants were assessed by EMS personnel on the site, and they all refused to be sent to a hospital. While emergency personnel attempted to remove the damaged vehicles from the road and restore regular traffic flow, North Road was stopped for approximately one hour.

Four-Alarm Fire Destroys Wells Home, Damages Nearby Structures WELLS, ME - A three-story house was destroyed and two other structures were damaged when the Wells Fire Department responded to a four-alarm structure fire on Atlantic Avenue, June 15th. As mutual aid teams helped with suppression, water supply, and exposure protection, firefighters responded to severe fire conditions by deploying several hose lines. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, and the fire was contained in less than one hour. After a propane tank had just been changed, investigators discovered that the fire had begun close to a gas barbecue and declared the occurrence to be unintentional. Crews stayed on scene to finish overhauling and made sure the fire was completely put out.

Motorcycle vs. Vehicle Crash in Sebago Leaves Two Seriously Injured SEBAGO, ME - Sebago Fire and EMS responded to a motorcycle and vehicle collision near Convene Road and Allen Road involving two patients with serious injuries, June 24th. While en route, crews were advised of significant trauma and requested air medical support from Lifeflight of Maine, along with additional ambulance assistance from Naples Fire Department and Standish. Upon arrival, responders initiated immediate patient care and coordinated rapid transport. One patient was taken to Sebago Town Hall to meet Lifeflight, while the second was transported to Bridgton Hospital for transfer to the Lifeflight helicopter from Bangor. Units remained on scene while the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office conducted investigation and reconstruction efforts.

Attic Fire in Lewiston Home Quickly Brought Under Control LEWISTON, ME - Lewiston Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a building fire near the 300 block of Pleasant Street, locating the incident on Goffe Street, July 2nd. Crews arrived to find a single-family home with fire in the rear and extending into the attic. Firefighters deployed multiple lines and made an aggressive interior attack to bring the fire under control. No occupants were home at the time, and no injuries were reported. The cause remains under investigation.

At at 7:46 a.m. on June 24th, the Bridgewater FD received a fire alarm activation and promptly put out a fire in a three-story apartment complex at 14 Meadow Lane. Crews arrived and used ground ladders to access the upper levels after seeing that the top floor was emitting a lot of smoke. A pet cat was saved from the building by firefighters. All residents escaped safely, and no injuries were reported. Mutual aid departments assisted at the scene, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Lincoln/Knox Basic Fire School attended a training session on propane fire suppression techniques on June 8th, hosted by members of the Waldoboro Fire Department. According to officials, firefighters learned the safety precautions related to pressurized gas events while receiving practical training in recognizing, managing, and putting out propane-related fires. Participants in the program had hands-on experience in controlling dangerous fire situations and using suppression techniques in a safe setting.

Cabot Firefighters Assist at Two-Vehicle Crash in Marshfield MARSHFIELD, VT — May 15th — The Cabot, VT Vol. Fire Department responded as mutual aid to support the Marshfield Fire Department on May 15th at a two-vehicle collision with airbag deployment on US-2 in Marshfield Village. Firefighters helped remove one of the damaged cars from the road and helped clean up the scene. Responders from East Montpelier Ambulance and Plainfield Fire and Fast Squad also responded, evaluating several passengers from both cars for injuries.

Troy Firefighters Respond to Late-Night Vehicle Fire TROY, VT - Troy Vol. Fire Department responded to a latenight vehicle fire near 1387 VT Route 101 in Troy, July 4th.

Upon arrival, crews found a full-size pickup truck fully engulfed in flames approximately 100-feet off the roadway in a field. Firefighters deployed hose lines and quickly brought the fire under control, preventing further spread. The fire was extinguished without incident, and no injuries were reported.

Five Calls Keep Hardwick Firefighters Busy Over Two Days HARDWICK, VT - Over the course of June 27th and 28th, the Hardwick Fire Department responded to five emergency calls: a two-vehicle crash with entrapment, a mutual aid response to a structure fire in Glover, a carbon monoxide alarm, and two medical calls. Engine 1, Engine 2, and 10 Hardwick firefighters were needed for the collision, which was designated as Call No. 68. In addition to the Hardwick Rescue Squad and the Hardwick Police Department, the Greensboro Fire Department sent extra equipment. While workers performed rescue operations, looked into the collision, and cleared the area, the road was closed for around two hours.

Hinesburg Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Vehicle Fire HINESBURG, VT - At 4:17 p.m. on July 9th, the Hinesburg Fire Department responded to a reported car fire. Within five minutes, crews arrived to discover a pickup truck carrying a trailer with the engine compartment fully involved. Hinesburg Police officers secured the route before firefighters started their suppression efforts. During the initial attack, there was a tiny explosion, but the fire was successfully contained and kept from spreading. The vehicle was deemed a total loss, and no injuries were reported.

Thetford Firefighters Assist at Structure Fire Response THETFORD, VT - On June 3rd, the Thetford Volunteer Fire Department responded to help mutual aid partners at a reported structure fire. As soon as they arrived, firefighters commenced suppression efforts after discovering a tiny residential building that was severely involved in fire. In order to set up a water supply, install handlines, and safeguard adjacent exposures, crews collaborated with local departments. Firefighters remained on scene conducting overhaul and suppression operations. No injuries were reported, and fire officials are looking into what caused the fire.

School Bus Crash Closes Route 103 in Proctorsville PROCTORSVILLE, VT Members of the Proctorsville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a school bus crash near the bottom of the Proctorsville Gulf on Route 103 at around 3:11 p.m. on June 6th.

Deputy Chief JUMP TO FILE# Glidden was in- 061226108 formed of the collision, according to officials, and asked Hartford Dispatch to page Ludlow Ambulance and the department. After receiving information that the incident had occurred close to Cavendish Road in Chester, dispatch reported that the Chester Fire Department and Chester Ambulance had already been sent.

Thirteen people from Engine 1, Engine 2, and Tanker 1 responded.

Firefighters took control as soon as they arrived, and EMS personnel assessed the bus passengers. In order to ensure the safety of responders, Route 103 was temporarily closed.

Incoming units were canceled after command swiftly concluded that no more resources were required.

No serious injuries were reported. The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles responded to investigate the crash. The roadway reopened to one lane around 4:00 p.m., while firefighters remained on scene directing traffic until the bus was removed. All units cleared the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Unpermitted Burn Leads to Shed Fire in Vergennes

Along with instructors and recruits from several departments, members of the Ferrisburgh Vol. Fire Department Firefighter 1 class took part in a live-fire training exercise on June 30th. According to officials, the training gave firefighters practical experience in search and rescue operations, firefighting techniques, and fire suppression under actual fire situations. While honing their operating abilities and teamwork, participants were able to experience the heat, smoke, and difficulties frequently seen during emergency occurrences.

VERGENNES, VT - Two unpermitted burning were among the three occurrences that the City of Vergennes Fire Department responded to on May 23rd.

Officials said one of the unauthorized burns spread and resulted in a shed fire, requiring firefighters to respond and prevent further damage. The department advised locals that before engaging in any outdoor burning activities, burn permits must be secured from their local fire warden.

Mutual Aid Crews Assist at Tuxbury Pond Brush Fire SOUTH HAMPTON, NH - Several mutual aid organizations were needed to help South Hampton Fire-Rescue respond to a brush fire on an island in Tuxbury Pond, June 14th. Firefighters used boats to deliver personnel and equipment to the area because of the island's position. Access to the location and fire suppression efforts were aided by forestry resources and other departments. Firefighters worked to contain and stop the fire from spreading to nearby plants.

While boat crews assisted with activities on the island, responders worked from several locations surrounding the pond. There were no reported injuries.

GORHAM NH FIRE & EMS

Gorham Firefighters Control Truck Fire Near Home GORHAM, NH - Gorham Fire & EMS responded to a reported truck fire adjacent to a building on June 25th. Prior to arrival, the vehicle rolled into the roadway, preventing significant damage to the nearby home, while bystanders used a garden hose to contain remaining fire in the surrounding grass.

Crews deployed a pre-connect from Engine 1 to complete fire attack, bringing the incident under control and conducting overhaul operations using approximately 750-gallons of onboard water. Gorham Fire & EMS acknowledged Gorham Police Department for traffic control and Gorham Public Works for roadway cleanup assistance.

After more than 24 years of service, Lieutenant/Paramedic Chris J. Hamilton retired from the Salem Fire Department.

Hamilton became a firefighter/paramedic in 1999 after joining the department in 1998. He served with the Manchester FD for a while before coming back to Salem to continue helping the locals. In 2010, he received a promotion to Lieutenant/Paramedic. Prior to entering the fire department, Hamilton was a Flight Medic in the US Army for eight years, rising to the rank of Specialist.

Second Alarm Struck for Fully Involved Chester House Fire CHESTER, NH - Following reports of potential entrapment, Chester Fire Department personnel responded to a structure fire at 12 Evelyn Noyes Road on June 16th.

According to officials, the first chief officer to arrive discovered an occupied single-family JUMP TO FILE# home. The home- 062726123 owner verified that everyone had left the house safely, freeing up firefighters to concentrate on putting out the fire.

An external attack was started by Chester Engine 2 and Tanker 1, and a second alarm was dispatched to bring more equipment and personnel to the scene. Using Chester Engine 2 and Derry Fire Department Ladder 3 for aerial operations, crews carried out a defensive operation. Water was provided throughout the incident by a tanker fill facility at Wason Pond and a dry hydrant on Evelyn Noyes Road.

The fire was placed under control at 1:56 a.m., with firefighters remaining on scene for overhaul before clearing at 3:44 a.m.

The department thanked mutual aid departments from Auburn, Brentwood, Candia, Danville, Deerfield, Epping, Fremont, Hampstead, Hooksett, Londonderry, Manchester, Raymond, and Sandown, along with Salem and Newton fire departments for station coverage, the Southern New Hampshire Rehab Unit, and the Chester Police Department for traffic and crowd control assistance.

Nashua Firefighters Quickly Contain Apartment Fire on Temple St. NASHUA, NH - Nashua Engine Co. 4 arrived to find smoke showing from a two-and-a-half-story, multi-family house on Temple St., July 15th. Companies forced entry into the apartment and found fire in a rear room. The fire was knocked down in a short amount of time. Companies remained on scene overhauling and checking for extension.

Pickup Truck Fire Contained

by Fremont Fire Rescue FREMONT, NH - The Fremont Fire Rescue Department responded to a pickup truck fire on Whittier Drive, close to Sandown Road, on May 22nd. When Engine 1 arrived, the car was completely involved and there were flames spreading into a grassy area nearby. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire and the surrounding foliage while swiftly deploying hose lines to contain the spread. Crews stayed on scene to look for hot spots and make sure the area was secure.

There were no reported injuries.

Windham Crews Respond to TwoVehicle Crash on Indian Rock Road WINDHAM, NH - On the afternoon of May 22nd, Windham Police and the Windham FD and Emergency Management responded to a reported two-vehicle collision close to 29 Indian Rock Road.

When crews arrived, they discovered two damaged cars. They secured the area and evaluated the occupants right away. While the cars were removed and the road was cleared, emergency personnel stayed on scene. Windham Police are looking into what caused the collision.

Trash Truck Fire Traced to Improperly Discarded Lithium-Ion Batteries NASHUA, NH - On June 3rd, a city trash collection truck caught fire after improperly discarded lithium-ion batteries ignited during collection, according to fire officials. The batteries were damaged or crushed inside the truck, sparking a fire that spread quickly. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in phones, laptops, power tools, and other rechargeable devices, should never be placed in household trash or recycling bins. No injuries were reported, and the fire was safely extinguished.

NASHUA, NH - On June 5th, a car crashed into a multi-family home in Nashua, rupturing a natural gas line and forcing the evacuation of 15 residents, according to Nashua Fire Rescue.

Firefighters responded to the crash JUMP TO FILE# after the vehicle left 063026141 the roadway and struck the front corner of the home, shearing off the building's gas meter and causing a significant gas leak.

The driver had exited the vehicle before crews arrived, and no one was trapped.

Firefighters evacuated the building and neighboring homes after detecting elevated gas levels inside and outside the structure.

Crews established a water supply, deployed hose lines as a precaution, and ventilated the affected buildings while awaiting utility crews.

The gas leak was secured after Liberty Utilities shut off the damaged gas line, allowing residents to return to their homes about 90 minutes later.

Merrimack Firefighters Recover Child's Stuffed Animals After RV Fire MERRIMACK, NH - On July 5th, Merrimack Fire Rescue crews operated at a well-involved RV fire on the turnpike, bringing the incident under control through coordinated suppression efforts. Following extinguishment, firefighters were able to recover several stuffed animals from the vehicle for a child, providing a small but meaningful moment amid the incident. The operation required a coordinated response, with crews working alongside New Hampshire State Police, Merrimack Police Department, New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and Kents Towing to safely clear the highway and restore traffic flow.

The Chichester Fire Department honored a firefighter on June 19th who fulfilled her childhood ambition of helping the community. The firefighter's path from dressing like a firefighter as a young child to currently serving as a member of Chichester Fire-Rescue was highlighted in a photo released by officials. Her career, according to department officials, is a reflection of years of training, devotion, and service to others through the fire service.

CAMPTON-THORNTON, NH - Members of the CamptonThornton Fire Rescue responded to a reported building fire on Morrill Lane on June 6th, but emergency operations were complicated by inclement JUMP TO FILE# 062026161 weather.

At around 9:00 p.m., dispatchers reported a kitchen fire. Responding crews had to reroute equipment due to heavy rain, strong gusts, lightning, and storm-related road closures.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a two-story, wood cabin with a significant fire. They asked for a second alarm and brought in more resources from other departments.

When Engine 1 personnel extended a handline inside the building, they came upon intense fire and extreme heat in the kitchen. While a second hoseline was utilized to put out flames on a covered porch, firefighters put out the main body of fire. After conducting a search, a Plymouth Fire-Rescue unit verified that every resident had left safely. No injuries were reported.

For around three hours, firefighters stayed on scene to check for fire extension and to put out hot spots. The house was declared uninhabitable due to severe water and smoke damage. Twelve more storm-related calls involving fallen trees and wires were handled by mutual aid departments while crews worked at the fire.

Fire Chief Daniel Defosses noted that the occupants attempted to use a fire extinguisher, but recognized the fire was beyond their ability to control and safely evacuated before calling

911. Officials said the incident serves as an important reminder that residents should leave immediately when a fire becomes unsafe

to fight and allow firefighters to handle the emergency.

The occasion honored his devotion, expertise, and passion to helping Littleton citizens throughout his first year with the department. After completing his probationary period, Firefighter Fillion was placed under Captain Harvey's command on B Shift.

Newbury Firefighters Contain 2nd Alarm Structure Fire NEWBURY, NH - Newbury Fire Rescue responded to a second alarm structure fire on Morse Lane in the South Newbury section of town on May 30th, where crews arrived to find a double-wide trailer with a singlestory wood-frame JUMP TO FILE# addition fully in- 062026156 volved.

New London Ambulance stood by at the scene as a precaution, though no injuries were reported among occupants or firefighters.

One Injured After Rollover Crash Traps Driver in Nashua

NASHUA, NH - On June 7th, Nashua Fire Rescue responded to a two-vehicle crash involving a rollover at the intersection of Amherst Street (Route 101A) and Airport Road, resulting in one person being trapped and in- JUMP TO FILE# 063026142 jured.

Engine 5 arrived first and found one vehicle overturned with the sole occupant still inside. Engine 5 established incident command on scene, with crews stabilizing the vehicle and beginning rescue operations. Ladder 1, along with AMR ALS 12 and Deputy Chief Scott Mobley, also responded to the incident.

Firefighters from Ladder 1 used hydraulic extrication tools to access and safely remove the trapped driver. The occupant sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by AMR ALS 12.

After the rescue, crews secured both vehicles by disconnecting batteries and addressing fluid leaks.

Nashua Police assisted with traffic control and scene safety.

Norwich Police arrived reporting 3 people injured with one trapped. Squad A arrived at 10:57 a.m., with a 3-car accident and started patient care & stabilization. Following that, they popped the driver’s door of the truck to remove the operator. Rescue 5 performed patient care on two parties in a separate vehicle. Service 5 assisted the police department with traffic control.

Monroe Firefighters Respond After Fallen Tree Ignites Power Lines MONROE, CT - Monroe firefighters and police responded to an incident on Church Street after a large tree fell onto power lines, sparking a fire in the roadway on May 30th.

Crews secured the scene until utility personnel were able to shut down power, allowing firefighters to safely extinguish remaining hot spots and overhaul the area. Operations continued until the scene was placed under control.

Aggressive Fire Attack Limits Damage at Norwalk Home on Heron Road NORWALK, CT - The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 24 Heron Road on the morning of June 12th at 7:58 a.m. Engine 3, Engine 2, Engine 4, Truck 2, Truck 1, Rescue 2, and Car 2 responded.

Upon arrival, Engine 3 reported smoke and fire showing from the rear and side of a 21/2-story woodframe residence. Car 2 subsequently declared a working fire, bringing Car 1 and Tac 2 to the scene.

Engine 3 arrived within five minutes of dispatch and quickly stretched a hose line to the secondfloor primary bedroom. The crew's aggressive fire attack confined the fire to the room of origin, limiting damage to smoke and water throughout the remainder of the

home.

With no occupants visible outside and vehicles present in the driveway, members of Truck 2 and Rescue 2 immediately conducted a primary search of the residence. The search confirmed that no occupants were inside.

Truck 1 ventilated the structure and, with assistance from Truck 2, checked for fire extension in the attic and roof areas. Engine 2 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and stretched a backup hose line to the fire floor. Gas and electrical utilities to the residence were secured as crews completed suppression operations.

Following extinguishment, the structure was thoroughly ventilated and atmospheric monitoring was conducted to ensure it was safe for re-entry.

Norwalk EMS remained on scene to provide firefighter rehabilitation, while the Norwalk Police Department assisted with traffic and scene control. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The homeowners were notified of the incident with the assistance of several concerned and helpful neighbors.

Fire Department operations were completed at 9:21 a.m. The incident remains under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal Division.

Early-Morning Car Fire Threatens Two Homes in Ledyard LEDYARD, CT - At 4:40 a.m. on May 27th, firefighters from Gales Ferry and Ledyard arrived at the 1000 block of Long Cove Road in response to a car fire that was reportedly endangering a structure. A working fire assignment was obtained, sending mutual aid forces to the area as other 911 callers reported the home getting involved. When emergency personnel arrived, they discovered two highly damaged automobiles and two adjoining buildings in danger from flames.

The fire was swiftly contained by firefighters, who also stopped it from spreading to either building. There were no reported injuries.

Minor Haz-Mat Incident on Miller Road in Preston PRESTON, CT - Around 4:04 p.m. on June 6th, the Preston Fire Dept. was dispatched to a home on Miller Road for a chlorine Haz-Mat situation. First arriving crews established command and investigated in full PPE and SCBA's. Chlorine tablets had been exposed to rainwater and were beginning to break down in their container. DEEP and CERRIT were contacted via phone and advised command on the next course of action. A Haz-Mat team from the Mashantucket Pequot Fire Dept. was requested to the scene. A crew of four (2 FFs as primary and 2 FFs as RIT) mitigated the hazard by placing the chlorine tablets into the homeowner's pool.

Small Plane Crashes Into Fence at Danbury Airport DANBURY, CT - Following reports of a small aircraft crash on airport land, Danbury Fire Department personnel arrived at Danbury Municipal Airport at around 10:20 a.m. on June 4th.

According to officials, the plane landed just short of Backus Avenue after colliding with a perimeter fence at the end of Runway 35. Under the supervision of airport management, firefighters helped securely disentangle the aircraft from the fencing. The incident did not injure the pilot, who was the only person inside the plane. There were no other reported injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into the crash's cause and circumstances.

On May 30th, 12 firefighters from the Old Saybrook FD responded to a third-alarm fire in Groton as mutual aid. A four-story multi-tenant structure was involved in the incident, and a significant regional response was needed. For several hours, seven tower ladders with the assistance of at least 10 engine companies worked to contain the fire. In order to make sure the building had been securely cleared, Old Saybrook firefighters were assigned to interior operations, where they carried out secondary searches.

Second Alarm Called After Ceiling Fan Fire Spreads to Attic in Ledyard Home LEDYARD, CT - Around 12:38 a.m. on Sunday, May 31st, the Ledyard, Gales Ferry and Mashantucket Fire Departments were dispatched to 120 Gallup Hill Road for a ceiling fan fire in the bathroom. Ledyard’s JUMP TO FILE# chief arrived with 060126129 fire showing from the attic and transmitted the second alarm.

Engine 13 laid a supply line and stretched an 1.75” hose line to the second floor. Ladder 25 set up in the front and flew the aerial. Mashantucket Engine 1 stretched another line to the second floor and began pulling ceiling.

Additional help was provided

by North Stonington Engine 151, Laurel Hill Engine 62, Sub Base Truck 65, Mohegan Tribal FAST, Norwich FAST and American Ambulance. The Ledyard Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Killingly Power Issue Causes House Fire and Brush Fire KILLINGLY, CT - At 4:28 p.m. on June 24th, the Attawaugan and Dayville FDs were dispatched to 38 Attawaugan Crossing Road for a power line down with a brush fire JUMP TO FILE# and an exposure issue. 062526132 Service 163 arrived at 4:34 p.m., and stretched their booster line for a fire in the front yard.

At 4:36 p.m., Service 163 reported a working fire in the basement, so the incident was upgraded to a first alarm. This added Dayville Ladder 163, East Killingly ET-264, Williamsville Engine 160, East Putnam Tanker 179, Putnam Tanker 178, South Killingly and Atwood FAST with KB Ambulance.

Tanker 162 pulled into the driveway and stretched an 1.75” crosslay to the walk out basement on the Delta side. The driver from Tank 162 stretched into the basement with two members from Dayville. Tanker 163 tied into Tanker 162 and gave them their tank water.

Engine 160 laid a 4-inch supply line from the hydrant near I-395, but held off on opening it. A line was then stretched into the rear of the top floor where crews reported extension in the Bravo side wall. Car 62 had command and the Killingly Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Litchfield Crews Respond to Tanker Truck Collision LITCHFIELD, CT - A pickup truck and a tanker truck collided on June 3rd, prompting the Litchfield Fire Department to respond. To help with incident operations, Engine 2 and Rescue 5 were sent to the scene. Firefighters dealt with fluids and debris on the road, secured the cars, and looked for any dangers. There were no reports of injuries.

NORWALK, CT - The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a large sailboat fire near Belle Island in Long Island Sound on the afternoon of June 14th, at 2:45 p.m.

MU-238, manned by Engine Company 3 mem- JUMP TO FILE# bers, responded to 061626140 the location and found a sailboat stern heavily involved in fire. The occupants of the boat were brought to safety by Norwalk Police Marine Division prior to fire suppression activities beginning.

Marine 238 arrived at the location and began suppressing the fire.

Due to the fire involvement of the vessel, the marine assets from Noroton FD and Darien Police Department responded to assist with operations/suppression. Once the fire was brought under control using boat-mounted pumps and hose streams, the involved vessel was towed to Norwalk Cove Marina with the assistance of Norwalk MU-238 and MU229, both staffed with marine operators. Engine 5 was called to Cove Marina to stand by to await the arrival of the boat and check it for any hotspots to ensure total extinguishment.

Norwalk EMS called to stand by on land in case any injuries needed treatment and there were none.

Fire operations were complete at 6:37 p.m. The incident is currently under investigation by the Norwalk Fire Marshal Division.

The Danbury Fire Department’s C Shift took to the water to launch the season with hands-on boat training aboard Marine 1, combining skill-building with community support. Under the guidance of Lt. Joe Capalbo, crews completed a comprehensive refresher covering onboard equipment and safe boating operations after returning the vessel to its seasonal home at Danbury Town Park. While training, firefighters quickly put their skills into action by assisting Danbury Parks and Recreation with maneuvering and positioning a swim dock ahead of the upcoming beach season.

Norwalk House Fire Leaves One Resident Seriously Injured NORWALK, CT - The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a house fire on Thursday, June 11th, at 4:36 a.m.

The fire was located at 39 Harriet Street in a 1.5-story JUMP TO FILE# single-family house. 061626137 The initial call reported a house on fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with heavy fire on the second floor.

The fire was extinguished through an aggressive interior attack by the first-alarm assignment.

A second- alarm assignment was held in staging near the scene. The fire was declared under control 19 minutes after firefighters arrived.

The Norwalk Fire Department responded with a total of 39 firefighters to the two-alarm fire, consisting of four engines, two ladder companies, a rescue company, and command and support staff.

Two unrelated occupants residing on the first and second floors were able to self-evacuate as firefighters arrived. The second-floor occupant is being treated at the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center for severe burn injuries. The firstfloor resident was uninjured and was relocated by the Red Cross.

Two firefighters are being treated for minor burn injuries.

Norwalk Hospital Paramedics initially responded with five medical responders. The Westport and New Canaan Fire Departments provided station coverage for Norwalk fire stations throughout the duration of the incident. The Norwalk Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

A training exercise on pump operations, pulling water from a pond, and setting up a water relay system was carried out by the Watertown Fire Department in June. In order to strengthen their skills in situations where hydrants are not available or more water is required, firefighters rehearsed delivering water from a remote source to simulated fire scenes. Crews coordinated water flow between devices while running engines, portable pumps, and hose lines.

Vehicle News In June of this year, the Woodbury (CT) Vol. Fire Department took delivery of a new heavy rescue built by Gowans Knight on a new Spartan chassis. Designated as Rescue 3, it replaces a 1998 Ford/4Guys rescue. The new Rescue 3 is well equipped with various rescue gear including vehicle extrication, as well as ice/water rescue gear. It is stationed at Woodbury Fire Headquarters, 25 Quassuk Rd.

Driver Rescued After Vehicle Rollover on Blake Street in Norwalk NORWALK, CT - The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a one-car MVA with rollover accident in front of 16 Blake Street at 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, June 11th. Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle that had rolled over with the driver, who was the sole occupant, trapped inside. Firefighters quickly stabilized the vehicle and extricated the driver within 15 minutes of their arrival. The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported for further medical evaluation. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

In a surprise move, the members of the Woodbury VFD worked behind the scenes to have the new Rescue 3 dedicated to Chief Janet Morgan. Chief Morgan joined the WVFD in 1980, alongside her father and brother, and has been active ever since. She has held various positions throughout her career, becoming the town fire marshal in 2004, and the Chief in 2005. She continues to serve in both roles.

Westport Firefighters Rescue Ducklings from Storm Drain WESTPORT, CT - On June 12th, Westport firefighters responded to an animal rescue on Wilton Road after a local business owner discovered several ducklings trapped inside a storm drain, while their mother remained close by. Members assigned to Rescue 3 quickly located the ducklings and carefully brought all four to safety. Once above ground, the ducklings were reunited with their anxious mother, bringing the incident to a heartwarming end.

At 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4th, the Mansfield FD held a badge pinning ceremony at the Mansfield Middle School. Fire Chief John Roache greeted the crowd and apologized about the original ceremony being postponed from February 5th, due to the train derailment.

CNG-Powered Truck Fire Quickly Contained in North Canton CANTON, CT - Canton Fire & EMS, along with Canton Police, responded to Windmill Lane for a reported sanitation truck fire on June 3rd. Upon arrival, crews discovered the fire involved the vehicle itself, with the driver advising that the truck was powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and that the gas line was compromised. With limited hydrant access in the area, a tanker from Barkhamsted East FD was requested to support water supply operations, and DEEP was notified due to the nature of the incident. Thanks to a rapid and coordinated response by firefighters, crews quickly applied water, contained the fire, and prevented further complications.

Lisbon Trailer Fire Contained LISBON, CT - At 5:13 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd, the Lisbon Fire Department was dispatched to 210 Bundy Hill Road Lot 36 for smoke in a trailer. While responding, Car 54 requested a full response from Jewett City. Car 754 arrived at 5:16 p.m., with smoke showing and transmitted the working fire. This added Norwich Engine 2, Truck 1, Baltic Tanker 124, Bozrah Tanker 126, Griswold ET-355 and Plainfield FAST. Car 54 established command and ET-154 stretched two lines. Engine 2 assisted with overhaul and the fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Firefighter Rick Landry has served the town for 13 years and was promoted to captain assigned to D Shift. He has been the EMS officer since 2015 and served on multiple committees for the new station, as well as the hiring and onboarding processes. He was pinned by his wife Heather.

Casey Berryman is a United States Navy Corpsman who participated in the Hero to Hero program at the Connecticut Fire Academy. He graduated from Class 76 and was pinned by his wife Sophia.

Paul Penezic was a firefighter in North Carolina followed by Old Mystic. His wife Kate pinned his badge.

Kevin Ecsedy started as a volunteer with Mansfield and recently graduated from the CFA Class 77. He was pinned by his Fiance Ana. Andrew Hart started with the Simsbury Fire Department and was the spokesman for Recruit Class 77. He was pinned by his girlfriend Isabel.

Hannah Lee worked as a chef at Uconn and started as a firefighter in Andover. She was pinned by her parents.

Damien Tyler started as a firefighter in Brooklyn and was recognized with the instructor’s award for excellence in academics, teamwork and leadership from Recruit Class 77. He was pinned by his wife Casey.

Daniel Murphy began his fire service tenure as a volunteer with Mansfield in 2021. He then got hired part time in 2024 and was promoted to full time in May of 2026. He was pinned by his son David and daughter Céili.

Hunter Chipman started as a volunteer with Vernon and was hired as a part timer. He was pinned by his girlfriend Lauren.

Joseph Saccocio started as a volunteer in Plainfield and currently works at the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department. He is now working part time in Mansfield and was pinned by his wife Emma and son Mac. Mayor Antonia Moran expressed her appreciation for the first responders and said the council has been making major strides to improve the fire department’s staffing since 2009.

Checking Egos Chaplain’s Corner Didymus McHugh

There was a time when an instructor was teaching his students to do an operation. Someone asked him about his qualifications, and it was found out that he did not have the certification to actually do the training for what he was teaching.

So that meant that he was training the people to do what they would have no certification or authority to do. Did the instructor understand the liability he was opening himself and the training center too? But the instructor thought that since he was the instructor, he would not listen to the higher authority.

There are other leaders of organizations, who have a title and some education and think that they are the all-knowing entity. They boss people around and have people slowly do more and more unethical and then illegal actions. The people listen to them because they put themselves in the posture of the ultimate authority.

That reminds me of a story that Jesus talked about going to a wedding banquet. He discussed taking the seat of lower honor because if you decide to take the seat of higher honor and someone comes that is honored more by the host, how embarrassed will you be to be moved to a seat of lower standing? It is better to take the set of lower standing and have the host elevate you in front of others, publicly showing your worth.

There are so many people who think so much of themselves and that is the only honor that they should receive.

Jesus stated that He was here to serve and not to be served. He also discussed that the person who puts himself first will be last.

It's a simple thing that we need

to understand. It is called humility.

We should be humble enough to know that we do not know everything. We can't know everything. We need to have the wisdom to seek advice from those who are highly trained with more experience, who are considered the experts in the field. But even when we are considered experts in the field, we still should not be full of ourselves.

Did you know that if you enter a horse paddock and you have the wrong attitude that the horses will keep you in check? They can sense what a person is like and if you come in with the wrong attitude, they will chase you out.

Are you humbling enough to know that you don't know it all? Are you strong enough to say that you are not all that? Are you a servant leader or a bully leader?

I want to mention, before we part, a deputy chief that I know.

When I met him, he was a battalion chief and you could tell, just by looking at him and watching him that he was the man in charge. The men that he has served with and the men that he is responsible for hold him in high regard, and that can be that is because he holds them in high regard. I have watched him take a call from the union president and express concern about a serious condition. The chief reassured that he was looking out for the men. The deputy chief is so respected that many people want to serve with him, when they cannot respond with the apparatus. To me, it also means a lot that he has a Biblical verse on his dry erase board, that he lives by and that he picked out his badge number reflecting that verse.

Please remember to stay humble and not full of yourself. I understand that we may do some amazing things, but many times, it is just the performance of our duty.

Fire Damages Norwich Automotive Shop After Two Vehicles Ignite Inside Garage NORWICH, CT - At 1:52 p.m. on Saturday, June 20th, the Norwich Fire Department with Laurel Hill Engine 62, East Great Plain Ladder 5, Engine 52, Occum Engine 42, Mohegan Tribal FAST and American Ambulance were dispatched to Sabby’s Auto, 253 Talman Street Extension for a structure fire.

Engine 2 arrived at 1:57 p.m., with fire showing from two bays of a single-story automotive repair garage. Engine 2 stretched a 2.5” hose line through the center of the building and found two vehicles

burning inside. Engine 3 laid in from the hydrant on the corner of Rock Street and Talman Extension to establish the water supply. Engine 1 stretched a second line and went through the A/B corner. Engine 3 then stretched a third line to cut off fire that got up into the loft area.

Truck 1 cut the garage doors and then went to the roof. Ladder 5 performed the primary search and

opened up. Engine 62 hit a hydrant on East Main and laid a secondary water supply. Engine 42 threw ladders and assisted Squad A with overhaul.

Battalion 1 had command while Car 10 had safety. Additional support on scene was provided by the Norwich Police Department, Building Official and Public Utilities. The Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Attleboro Firefighters Stop Truck Fire from Spreading to Home

Driver Injured After Rollover Crash in Waltham WALTHAM, MA - At 9:30 P.M. on June 8th, Waltham Engine 4, Squad 5 and Medic 1 responded to an accident at 60 Bedford Street. Engine 4 arrived and reported a car on its side with the driver out of the car. Squad 5 shored up the vehicle.

The driver, who had hit a parked car and rolled the car over, was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital with unknown injuries.

Salem has placed a 2026 Pierce Saber 1500/500 into service as Engine 4. Previously, the company operated a second-hand 1998 EOne Cyclone II 1250/500, which originally served the town of Braintree. The older rig will be renumbered as Engine 6 and retained for use as a citywide spare.

ATTLEBORO, MA - Members of the Attleboro Fire Department arrived at 5 Bishop Avenue at around 1:27 p.m. on June 8th in response to a report of a car fire with several explosions close to a home.

When firefight- JUMP TO FILE# ers arrived, they saw 061226119 a construction pickup vehicle parked near a house that was deeply burned in the fire.

The home's vinyl siding had already started to melt due to the extreme heat, according to officials.

In order to stop the fire from spreading to the structure, crews started an aggressive attack right away and contained it in about 10 minutes.

Firefighters found several compressed gas cylinders inside the truck during overhaul operations, which had burst during the fire and caused the explosions witnesses had reported. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the department's Fire Investigation Unit and is not considered suspicious. The Attleboro Building Department also responded to evaluate damage to the residence.

Quick Firefighter Response Saves Attleboro Home from Major Fire Damage ATTLEBORO, MA - The Attleboro Fire Department quickly contained a residential fire after responding to reports of flames at a George Street home on June 14th, preventing the blaze from spreading into the residence.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the rear of the structure and discovered a large fire involving an exterior deck that had begun extending to the home's siding. Crews immediately deployed hose lines

and launched an aggressive attack on the fire. The homeowner had attempted to extinguish the flames with a garden hose before firefighters arrived but was unable to stop the rapidly growing fire due to intense heat conditions.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of firefighters, the blaze was brought under control be-

fore it could enter the home's interior. Damage was limited to the deck and a section of exterior siding, with no smoke or fire damage reported inside the residence.

Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental, with preliminary findings indicating it was likely caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.

Firefighters Memorial Sunday Held in Fall River FALL RIVER, MA - On Sunday, June 14th, firefighters and their families gathered at the Firefighters Memorial in the south end of the city to honor the memory of our fallen brothers. The day began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a prayer from the Fire Department Chaplin. A ceremonial bell was tolled for the fallen Firefighters and the recently departed members. The flag was then lowered to Half-staff followed by the reading of the Firefighters Prayer.

Five Alarms Struck in Springfield; Largest Response in a Decade in This City SPRINGFIELD, MA - A Friday night fire in the South End neighborhood of this city rose to five alarms and displaced 16 residents from their apartments before being knocked down on JUMP TO FILE# June 19th.

062926105 The first 911 calls started coming into Springfield Fire Alarm before 11:00 p.m., and by the time first due Engine 1 and Truck 1 arrived 5 minutes later, the wood-frame porches on the Charlie side of this four-story, ordinary construction apartment block were well-involved in fire.

With heavy fire venting from the first floor Bravo side and heavy fire consuming the porches from the first to the fourth floors, the second alarm was struck quickly.

Crews began knocking down the fire from the exterior with hand lines and master streams before transitioning to an interior attack. Heavy and/or moderate smoke conditions were reported on all four floors as crews made their way up, which prompted Wilcox St. Command to skip the third alarm and strike the fourth alarm within minutes. Fourth alarm companies (2 engines and 2 ladders by Springfield's running card) were all mutual companies from suburban departments who were still in route to the city, so there was a minor delay in getting more manpower on scene. Once this manpower arrived on scene, crews were dispatched to each floor to assist SFD companies in advancing additional hand lines and opening walls and ceilings to look for extension.

After the main body of fire was knocked down on scene and primarily due to the size of the apartment block and need for extensive overhaul, the fifth alarm was struck to bring in additional mutual aid companies to relive those already on scene.

Only two minor, non-lifethreatening injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though SFD investigators have determined the point of origin to be in the first floor apartment living room. The displaced tenants all received help from the Red Cross.

Andover Firefighters Extinguish Tractor-Trailer Fire on I-93 South

Sudbury purchased this 2025 Spartan FC94/Fouts 1500/1000 to operate as Engine 1.

ANDOVER, MA - Members of Andover Fire Rescue responded to a reported tractor-trailer fire on Route 93 South close to Interstate 495 on June 22nd. According to officials, when firefighters arrived, the tractor section of an eighteen-wheeler was completely engulfed in flames. With the help of other responding crews, Engine Company 3 swiftly established a hoseline and contained the fire before it could spread. Neither the driver nor the responding firefighters reported any injuries, and the driver was able to safely exit the vehicle.

Crews remained on scene to put out any last hot spots and make sure the area was secure.

Car on Roof with Entrapment in Falmouth FALMOUTH, MA - Initial reports of a car on its roof with entrapment at 325 Carrige Shop Road in East Falmouth on June 17th sent Falmouth Engine 5, Engine 6 (formerly Engine 20) and Ambulance 5 responding. When firefighters arrived, they found everyone out of the vehicle. The female operator refused medical attention.

Five-Alarm Fire Displaces 51 Residents in Lawrence LAWRENCE, MA - On Sunday, July 12th, Lawrence firefighters were dispatched at 12:42 p.m. for a reported structure fire.

Lawrence fire companies were clearing a fire alarm on Common Street when Car 21 Deputy Leduc reported to the Fire Alarm Office of heavy smoke in the Tower Hill section neighborhood. Shortly thereafter, a structure fire response was transmitted after multiple callers reported heavy smoke from the area of 486 Haverhill Street.

Upon arrival, Car 21 Deputy Leduc struck the Working Fire in a large three-story, Type V, six-family residence. A Second and Third

Alarm quickly followed. As crews arrived, Ladder 5 observed an occupant hanging from a third floor window at 466 Haverhill Street, which had already become heavily involved in fire. A ground ladder was rapidly raised and the occupant was successfully rescued and treated by EMS. Firefighters conducted primary searches of the three involved buildings, and hose lines stretched for aggressive interior attack and to protect exposures. A 4th Alarm was

transmitted with extra engine companies as firefighters battled high humidity and soaring temperatures.

Operations transitioned to defensive operations with two Tower Ladders, a Ladder pipe, deck guns and numerous hose lines.

The 5th Alarm was transmitted at 3:52 p.m., and the fire was brought under control at 8:00 p.m., with companies remaining on the scene several more hours. A total of 51 residents were displaced by this fire, and despite the magnitude of the 5 Alarm fire, no serious injuries were reported.

Multi-Agency Overnight Search Conducted on Seekonk River SEEKONK, MA - On June 29th, Seekonk Fire Department units, including Car 1, Car 2, Engine 1 with Boat 1, and Rescue 1, responded overnight to assist the City of Pawtucket with a large-scale search operation on the Seekonk River. Operating in coordination with the Bristol County North Dive Team, crews conducted a coordinated and methodical search of the waterway, utilizing both surface and specialized resources to cover the area. After several hours of operations, all units were cleared from the scene in the early morning hours, marking the conclusion of an extensive multi-agency effort.

Two Transported Following Main Street Collision in Walpole WALPOLE, MA - On June 6th, a truck and a passenger car collided on Main Street in front of Cumberland Farms, prompting the Walpole Police Department and Walpole Firefighters IAFF Local 2464 to respond. Police and firefighters controlled the area and treated patients, according to officials. Ambulance 1 took two passengers who had minor injuries to a nearby hospital so they could be assessed.

Assured Collision cleared the damaged cars from the road when emergency procedures were finished, enabling the area to reopen.

On June 2nd, the Waltham Fire Department’s newest recruits entered their third week of in-house training as they continued preparing for the fire academy, which began on June 8th. Members of the department’s Training Division conducted instruction on the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and techniques for navigating in smoke-filled conditions. The hands-on session focused on building the skills recruits will need to operate safely and effectively in low-visibility environments.

Cliff Rescue in Lynn Woods Prompts Multi-Unit Response LYNN, MA - On June 20th, Lynn Fire and Police responded to a report of a person who fell from a rock cliff near Stone Tower in Lynn Woods, sustaining lower extremity injuries.

Engine Co. 7 quickly deployed a UTV to access the remote area and, with help from dispatch, located the patient down a rocky slope. Additional crews responded to assist with patient care and extrication. The patient was stabilized, then transported by UTV and carried through the woods to an awaiting ambulance.

Things got a little warm at a recent Fire Academy class for recruits from Fall River and several surrounding communities. The instructors created an evolution for a simulated cellar fire.

Two Transported Following Head-On Crash in Falmouth FALMOUTH, MA - On June 17th, Falmouth Police reported a crash in front of Mad Martha’s brewery, East Falmouth Highway. Reports were there was one driver needing assistance out of her car. Falmouth Fire dispatched Engine 6 and Ambulance 4. Ambulance 5 was also requested.

Two people were transported to Falmouth Hospital with unknown injuries.

Wareham Fire Department Assists at Major Gas Leak in Bourne WAREHAM, MA - Wareham Fire Dept. assisted during a significant gas leak at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne on May 28th.

Assistant Chief Haskell and Engine 3, together with a callback crew, arrived to help with the situation, according to officials.

Firefighters monitored the atmosphere on Patriot State, the academy's training ship, and a cruise ship that was docked at the maritime facility while they were on

scene to make sure there were no dangerous gas levels on board.

For about three-and-a-half hours, Engine 3 and Assistant Chief Haskell stayed on scene to assist responding agencies in managing the incident safely.

Following their completion of the Monson Fire Department-sponsored regional recruit training program, Penny Duverger, Cameron Hiltbrand, and Harley Kroll were acknowledged by the Wales Fire Department. Through classroom instruction and practical training, the academy taught fire suppression, rescue operations, firefighter safety, hazardous materials knowledge, and emergency response.

Fire Code Inspections – Part 2 IN THE FIRE ZONE JOSEPH CEA

With some basics in place from last month’s Fire Code Inspections Part 1 we can now explore an actual inspection and what may occur on a given inspection. This article will be from the perspective of a rookie fire code inspector and how to go about being successful in that role.

The first step is to ask yourself what are you inspecting; extinguishers? Alarm systems?

Egress? Just as important as what is being inspected would be where (in what setting) are the inspections; local businesses? A college campus?

New construction?

An incoming inspector can continue to use past record formats which can be based on the location and/or types of issues likely encountered at a given setting.

By all means do not be hesitant to suggest and/or implement more efficient changes. An inspector should always strive to improve the inspection process recognizing that in some cases, there may not be any choice.

The NYS Education Department uses this form for inspection of schools that would literally take an “act of Congress” to change.

Although keeping paper records are usually necessary an inspector moving to digitize would be a move in the right direction making sure to have back-up copies. Consistent with good record keeping would be developing your own quick reference guides or “cheat sheets”. These can help make an inspection proceed more smoothly but more importantly when an inspector develops their own materials it facilitates learning and memorizing necessary standards. This would be largely dependent on the employing agency and/or the experience of

the investigator. Using a checklist during an inspection will always result in missed violations. In fact, according to Town of Brighton Fire Marshal Chris Roth using a checklist “Will cause an inspector to walk past a stack of dynamite while looking for a fire extinguisher.”

Chris further advises to take a more wholistic approach when conducting a fire code inspection and to let the building “talk to you” rather than focusing on single items on a list. Focusing on a checklist during an inspection may also open the door for a client to walk you past a violation or something they don’t want you to see. Perhaps a locked door that a good inspector will insist on seeing what is in that room.

Before even going out to a site though it is important to thoroughly go over any past inspection records to view when the most previous inspection took place. More importantly past records will show the most frequent violations that have taken place and what compliance efforts have been taken to address those violations. Note that most if not all NFPA standards have language indicating how often an inspection should take place.

For example, NFPA 10 governs fire extinguishers that must be inspected monthly while NFPA 25 talks about standpipe, sprinkler systems and fire pumps all of which have different inspection frequencies.

Reviewing past records will also help to establish a rapport with any client an inspector is responsible to examine. Establishing rapport does not necessarily mean being friendly or not applying accountability. Clients will try and take advantage of the new inspector so be prepared. This is

why past records and a prior review are so important because an inspector will then see who is honest, accepts responsibility for violations and works to correct them as opposed to a serial excuse-maker.

Picture this conversation: Inspector: I noticed there is a lot of inventory in your storeroom potentially blocking egress.

Store owner: Yeah, we just got a lot of new inventory delivered yesterday and we always get everything processed and put away to avoid that.

Inspector: Really? Because it appears there always seems to be inventory delivered on the day of inspection and the records I reviewed yesterday indicate five violations in the past two years that even when given the opportunity to correct didn’t get done.

Remember what your goals are as a fire inspector though. It isn’t necessarily to go in “guns a blazing”, shutting down businesses and removing tenants from their homes although that could happen. Yes, fire marshals have to deal with violations but should strive to keep businesses open and residents in their homes which in turn keeps people employed, paying taxes and contributing to their community.

What about actually issuing a violation though? Do fire marshals have any discretion when doing so? That answer is two-fold. On the one hand establishing rapport will go much further in not only reducing fire code violations but also getting those business owners and landlords to remedy any existing issues. On the other hand, if a violation is observed and recorded then it must be issued because the potential result is just too great to ignore.

This brings us to the wording of any violation. Any violation should NOT be worded such that any remedy will occur within 30 days because that allows an unnecessary and potentially dangerous window for unsafe conditions to continue. Rather, any violation should be worded such that any remedy be done so IMMEDIATELY and that re-inspection will occur in 30 days and/or as the schedule allows.

The latter closes the gap and requires prompt attention.

Lastly, Fire Inspectors also provide preventative safeguards for firefighters. For example, the discovery of contractors using CSST, a cheaper but thin-walled gas piping system that according to DeWitt Deputy Fire Chief Tim Cowan has been responsible for multiple fires and at least two LODDs (see attached online Power Point – used with permission).
