BEYOND RAY RICE Remarks delivered by Head of School Rick Melvoin on January 5, 2015

I love working at a boys’ school, at this boys’ school – a school for boys. In fact, I have done this work for thirty-six years: fourteen years at Deerfield Academy and now twenty-two here at Belmont Hill. Looking back, I even spent several summers in high school and college working at a day camp – Camp Cuamba For Boys: I guess I knew something even then.

In any event, I love what you students bring every day – your energy and drive. I love watching you grow individually and watching you grow together, watching each Form emerge over the years, watching us grow as a school. I love the freedom and ease that can come from having boys together in a classroom, on a team, in the B-Flats, in the Goodband Commons, at a lunch table. I love the pride that you take in your school and the spirit that you bring. With a remarkable faculty also dedicated to the mission, we share something special.

Yet we live in a world of boys and girls, of men and women, and one of our responsibilities as a good school is to prepare you to live well in the world after Belmont Hill, the world beyond Belmont Hill. That can take some adjustment, or at least require some careful thought. But this is a vital issue for us because we live today in a country, in a culture, where there is huge concern about how men treat women, and this needs to be our issue as well.

Last August, as the story was still breaking, a parent asked me what the school was going to do about Ray Rice. How many of you have seen the video of the former NFL star knocking out his fiancée in the elevator? It is horrifying; I cannot imagine anyone with a different opinion. Yet the Ray Rice story is caught up in so many themes that it can’t stop spinning. It is about violence and football; about professional sports and celebrity; about our legal process; most recently about not only the reaction of the perpetrator, but also that of the victim. There is a reason people keep talking about Ray

Rice. But the fall brought much more. It brought the story of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston and claims of a rape case that may have been suppressed. It brought allegations of gang rape at a fraternity at the University of Virginia that have roiled that campus. It has brought allegations from the federal government against over fifty colleges and universities that they have not sufficiently addressed issues of sexual assault.

It has brought national discussion of how men treat women: of what is legal, what is ethical, what is right.

As I have thought about how to address these issues of domestic violence and sexual assault here, at a boys’ school, part of the challenge for me comes in finding a way to talk about these issues in a way that you will listen to and that you can hear. Here’s the dilemma – see if you share it with me in some ways. Sometimes I find myself getting defensive when I tell someone that I work at a boys’ school; sometimes I feel that people want me to apologize for that, or at least explain it, as if working with boys only is wrong or that working at a boys’ school means I am not sensitive to women’s issues or issues of gender. I am guessing that you sometimes have feelings like that too. So I don’t want to talk in a way that makes you feel defensive or sounds preachy. Yet our society has a long way to go before men and women are treated equally, fairly, and ethically, and that makes it worth talking about these issues. I recognize that these issues may be a bit abstract for some of you boys in the Middle School. On the other hand, for many of you older students, and surely for most of you by the Sixth Form, these issues are real – and by next fall they will be immediate. In fact, I will wager that every one of you Sixth Formers next fall will be at a dorm or advisor or college freshmen meeting where you will hear a great deal about campus rules and expectations regarding sexual activity and sexual assault. No college campus can or should ignore issues of date rape and sexual assault; no college can or should

avoid talking about drug and alcohol use and how those are tied to student behavior. Then again, I know from talking with some of you Third Formers in Ethics class that lots of you know about these issues already. And the issues will not go away. This past fall, the California legislature debated a law about how to establish on college campuses when “no means no” and “yes means yes” – a law about students needing explicit permission to take steps in a physical relationship. That may not be romantic, but it says something about the level of concern in our society.

What lies behind these concerns? Why are they so important for us here today, even beyond the sensationalism of Ray Rice or Jameis Winston?

Let me suggest two approaches. First, we need to talk about these issues because we as a society have a lot of work to do on matters of gender: on how men and women are viewed in our society, how they are treated, how the media portrays them, how expectations for both men and women get formed. Here’s an idea that I want to share with you that has long shaped my thinking about our roles in society. A generation ago, Wellesley professor Peggy McIntosh, Ph.D., associate director of the Wellesley Centers for Women, wrote that some people in our society have unconscious advantages over others. She wrote about how white people have them over blacks; she also suggested that men have them over women: that in terms of gender, men carry with them an “invisible knapsack” in which they carry, unconsciously, all sorts of male privilege. Men move with ease through American society in a way that women don’t but, McIntosh suggested, men don’t even realize it. Men earn more money for identical jobs than women; are bigger and stronger physically; dominate corporate CEO and board positions; dominate the halls of government; leave to spouses the bulk of childcare. None of this makes men bad or evil – that is not the point. But men often have privilege that they don’t recognize: It is simply their life, their world…our world.

How does this relate to you? This inequality often occurs in male relationships with women. As you know just from watching TV or perhaps from playing certain video games, there are parts of our culture that glorify male-dominated sex and violence; there are parts that objectify women – in other words, make women into objects.

I was struggling to understand how men get these dangerous messages and recently met with an Ethics teacher from Bentley

University. Professor Clark suggested that there are a number of forms of what she called “moral disengagement” that allow men or even encourage men to act in ways we know are wrong. For example, one might excuse one’s own bad behavior by saying “everyone does it” or “well, others have done worse” or “it’s no big deal.”

Another form of moral disengagement is to blame the victim: “well, she deserved it” or “she shouldn’t have been drinking or wearing that short dress.” And if you doubt whether women are objectified in our society, just check out TV ads for beer that link alcohol and women and sex and sports: It’s a potent cocktail. These are all dangerous patterns of behavior, and we need to be aware of them so that we can avoid them, even if some are painfully in the mainstream of our culture.

But I suggested there are two ways to approach this question of how we as boys and men deal with girls and women in our lives as well as in our society. In some ways, the second path is simple. In fact, it is tied to fundamental goals we have for each of you boys at this school. If someone ever asks me what the heart of our mission is at Belmont Hill, I say it is not about college; it is not about grades or achievements; it is not really about activities at all. My goal for each of you boys is that you become an ethical, thoughtful, independent young man. What does it mean to be ethical? You all know the answer to that. You know that there are fundamental issues of right and wrong in the world.

When it comes to dealing with other people, male or female, you know that you treat others well and with respect. You also know that you need to think before you act, and that actions have consequences. Thoughtful? Again, you know what it means to be thoughtful.

Yet in the case of dealing with girls and women, I urge you to make sure you think before you act, think before the moment. The more thinking we do before a situation arises, the better chance we have to come out in the right place. When it comes to how you treat girls and women, how you establish relationships with them, such thoughtfulness will serve you well. I am not talking about opening doors or paying for a date, though those are valid questions to think through as well. But do you respect fully the ideas of another person who is female? Her wishes or interests? Her needs? Do you treat a person with the respect that you would want?

you become not only ethical and thoughtful, but also independent. Each of you is becoming more independent, day-by-day and certainly year-by-year. Whether in six months or six years, you will leave Belmont Hill and your home and go out into the world. You will bring with you a set of values, a set of beliefs. They may be based on what your parents have taught you, or your teachers, or your school, but you will own them. What happens when you are away at college – or even at a gathering now – and some guys start talking about doing something stupid, or wrong, or simply are talking in sexist or demeaning ways? How will you act? If you see a guy hitting on a drunk girl, or with access to date rape drugs, will you have the independence, the strength, to call him out? Thinking of both the extraordinary talk from Holocaust survivor Rena Finder last September, or perhaps from the aftermath of Ferguson and Staten Island last month, will you be not a bystander but an upstander – someone willing to “stand up” for what is right? When you have left the safety of college and are on your own, how will you act if someone at work, whether personally or professionally, proposes or does something sexist or misogynistic? Will you have the independence and will to do what you know is right?

Whether now or in college or beyond, most of you will spend much of your lives with women, both in work and most likely with a life partner. How will you treat girls now and women later? Who is the person you want them to know?

When framed this way, questions about Ray Rice or Jameis Winston are not difficult. We may get swept up in matters of celebrity and fame, of sports and society, but domestic violence is always wrong; sexual assault is always wrong. Most of us, of course, spend most of our time amidst simpler issues of living. But whether you are here or in a coed setting, with other guys or with girls or women, your compass should still point true.

At a time when our society is asking important questions about how women should be treated, I count on you to be the ethical, thoughtful, independent person who knows the right path – and stands up to pursue it.

Finally, I suggested a goal the School has for you is that

With the Melvoin Academic Center open and a fully functioning part of the campus, the Bulletin sat down with Head of School Rick Melvoin to get his thoughts on this important addition to the campus.

What were the origins of this project?

RICK MELVOIN: We first thought about replacing the Howe Building as early as the mid 1990s, but felt we had higher facilities priorities at that time. We looked at it further in 2007, but we were in the middle of a campaign that was focused on raising endowment and didn’t want a major building project at that time. After the campaign ended in 2010, the trustees and faculty engaged in some strategic planning and reaffirmed that replacing Howe was our highest facilities priority.

What was the vision for the building?

We didn’t focus at first on what it should look like, but rather on what needs we had academically. Wanting a quality classroom for every full-time teacher, what was the minimum number of classrooms we needed?

Common spaces for each of the three Middle School Forms? We thought we couldn’t fit much more than about 20,000 square feet on the site – Howe was 8,000 – but we knew we faced a dramatic increase.

As the project unfolded – who were some of the people you would say were instrumental in bringing this to fruition?

On the design side, over twenty faculty and staff participated in Saturday morning planning meetings in MacPherson.

Lauren Hamilton was certainly important, thinking about the needs of a Middle School program. Dean of Faculty, Steve Armstrong, gave us valued input as well. Steve Kaplan ’83, our Arts Department chair, brought a good eye and creative way of thinking about buildings and aesthetics. On the construction side, our CFO, Jay Bounty, and trustee chair of the Facilities Committee, Jeff Drucker ’90, were remarkable. They were involved in every building meeting. They were just tireless.

Belmont Hill’s Director of Physical Plant, Casey Young, was extraordinary. Casey has an intensely practical, experienced eye in looking at everything from design

to execution. Zaurie Zimmerman and her associate Jen Koppel were vital as outside experts who supervised the project. Their expertise saved us a lot of money and made it a much better building.

What were your thoughts about the naming of the building?

I was honored beyond words – and profoundly uncomfortable. But the trustees who were kind enough to suggest it were quite resolute, and I remain deeply touched by their decision. I finally made my peace with it by focusing on the idea that Melvoin is my family name, and I am part of a family that is dedicated to education.

for group work as well as for individuals, and that is intentional. The spaces that we designed for the three Forms, which are also used by all Forms at other times during the day, show a vision for the School that is manifest in the building: that boys in Middle School evolve in how they work, in how the School oversees them, in how they move through the day and interact with one another. And so I think the building is exciting in that way: It has an energy that is distinct and palpable. Will it serve Belmont Hill well as a 21st-century building? We are only 15 years into the 21st century, of course, but we firmly believe it will be a very good building for this school for many years to come.

Can you give a description of the building as you see it?

It is a 21st-century school building, not a generic school building. It’s a building of light and color, of different angles, of nooks and crannies, of surprises. It offers spaces

EXPLORING A CULTURE IN TRANSITION Faculty Trip to Cuba

In June 2014, a contingent of current and former faculty visited Cuba on a People to People license, issued by the U.S. State

I came to appreciate how Cubans experience their communist revolution as an independence movement. This realization was driven home during our visit to the museum celebrating the 1961 Literacy Campaign, a national volunteer initiative that organized thousands of teenaged students into brigades that marched to the country’s interior to teach peasant farmers and children how to read. This campaign consolidated the Cubans’ sense of their national capacity and sovereignty.

From our visits and conversations with Cuban government officials and citizens, the country as a whole has been profoundly affected by fifty years of the U.S. embargo and estranged diplomatic relations – though change is on the horizon. Following are a few thoughts from some colleagues on the trip.

A former brigade teacher led our tour. Her account, photos, and a video helped me understand that the revolution appealed because it unleashed their national capacity and overthrew foreign interests that compromised their national sovereignty. I incorporated this insight into the discussion on communism in my AP Comparative Government class.

While we’d been told that the economy and infrastructure of the country is in shambles, we found the arts to be alive and well, even vibrant. Music, live and recorded, poured out of clubs, bars, cafés, restaurants, cars, and private homes all through the day.

In traveling between city and village, I observed a sorrowful poverty enmeshed within a proud sense of identity and self, and further encapsulated in a most gorgeous natural and untouched landscape.

We visited the largest artisan market in Havana in Plaza de la Capital. Vendors from around the country converge on this beautiful, colonial site to sell their work. Despite tight restrictions, people still make eye-opening pieces. Creativity, ingenuity, and passion are alive and well, and this market helped me separate – as I hope Cubans do – government from people.

I became aware at an entirely new level of how biased the information was about Cuba that I received growing up. For our tour guide to admire, if not revere Castro, was illuminating.

His life was greatly improved because of Castro’s policies. The success and ingenuity of the literacy program are dazzling, but then so, too, is the poverty.

The contrast between the vibrancy and poverty is ever present.

We were able to experience different ways of living (city life vs. country life), explore museums, cultural/historic sites, and nightclubs with live music.

I appreciated the intimacy of this trip and still reflect on the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. As Richard Wright stated, it was a great opportunity “to respond to the warmth of other suns.”

I found the Cuban people to be an industrious, entrepreneurial group. The Cubans struck me as taking the best care possible of their resources and being inventive in facing financial and political challenges. They have much to be proud of – especially in health care and education – and their spirited response to national and international difficulties was impressive.

It was fascinating to see the results of a lasting revolution fifty years out. It’s too bad the Arab Spring missed its opportunities to model the Cuban revolution. The response to the energy crisis of 1991, when the country lost its supply of Soviet oil, and the switch to organic agriculture was brilliant.

We were inspired by what the Cubans call their “special period.” The ingenuity and creative problem solving used to address challenges have served them well. We have vivid memories of a special place and look forward to returning some day.

Cross Country

Cross Country TYSON TRAUTZ, Head Coach The 2014 cross country season began in July when several runners traveled up to Dartmouth for the Gold Medal Running Camp. The group bonded and enjoyed running twelve to fifteen miles each day – an effort that paid off during the season.

raced against Thayer Academy, Noble and Greenough, and St. Sebastian’s. The team lost to a quick Nobles team and claimed strong victories against both St. Sebastian’s and Thayer. The regular season was now over with a record of 12-6.

At the team’s first race, the Martha’s Vineyard Invitational, the varsity team had its highest finish ever, placing second overall in a tough field of competitors.

John Pappo ’18 had an impressive race, finishing third overall.

At the ISL championship at Governor’s Academy, the team ran a competitive race despite difficult conditions.

Belmont Hill’s top five came in the top half of the entire race, and John Pappo ran an incredible race, coming in tenth, and winning a medal and All League recognition.

The team came in seventh out of the fourteen teams, matching its performance in the previous year.

The team then lost to a strong Middlesex team but had convincing wins over both Lawrence and St. George’s.

Jake DeCaprio ’16 had a strong finish in his first varsity race. Next, the team traveled to Milton Academy to face Milton, St. Mark’s and Groton and came away with two wins and one loss for an overall League record of 4-2.

In competition against Roxbury Latin, Tabor Academy, St. Paul’s, Marianapolis Prep, Worcester Academy, and Governor’s Academy, the team lost to Roxbury Latin and St. Paul’s, but beat the rest.

In the last home race, at Fresh Pond against BB&N, the team took four of the top five in each of its races.

On a rainy Saturday, the boys fell to a tough team from St. Mark’s and fell to very fast teams from Roxbury Latin and Rivers. The rough day of racing was a sign of the racing we were preparing for at the ISL and New England Championships.

At the NEPSTA Division One Championships at Hotchkiss, the seniors put together a solid performance that propelled them to an eighth-place team finish. Aided by a medal-winning performance by John Pappo who finished the tough, hilly course in 17:13, good enough for 19th overall, Belmont Hill beat out ISL rivals Milton and St. Mark’s, earning redemption for losses at the ISLs. It will not be easy to replace this year’s seniors, who not only added strong running talent and work ethic to the team, but also a great sense of humor and camaraderie.

The team is lucky to have such a dedicated and caring set of assistant coaches in Kirby, Rice, and Vailas.

Thanks to them for their knowledge and leadership, and to all of the parents and staff who contributed to the team and helped make it another great year.

The varsity football team finished the 2014 season with a final record of 5-3. The team was led by Ian Arthur ’15 (offensive line), Evan Chaletzky ’15 (wide receiver), Harry Kraft ’15 (quarterback), and Jack Tamasi ’15 (free safety/wide receiver). Several other members of Form VI also served as key starters and contributed significantly to the team throughout the season. During the preseason, the team worked diligently to prepare for their challenging schedule and played well in scrimmages against Middlesex and Milton Academy. The season opener proved to be a thrilling and hard-fought

game against BB&N that was won on a heart-stopping last-second field goal kicked by Evan Chaletzky.

After the opening win, the team posted an impressive road victory against a strong Groton team and the following week soundly defeated Roxbury Latin to post a 3-0 record. Unfortunately, the winning streak came to an end against St. Sebastian’s as Belmont Hill faced off in an exciting matchup versus the Arrows on Homecoming Weekend. Despite the loss to St. Sebastian’s, the team entered the final stretch of the season competing for an Independent School League champi-

onship. These hopes fell short after dropping a challenging game versus the eventual ISL League and New England Champion, Lawrence Academy. The following week, the team traveled to Concord, NH to take on St. Paul’s in a night game. Under extremely difficult weather conditions, the team earned a convincing victory. Going into the final week of the season with a 5-2 record, there was still a chance of reaching post-season play. The team prepared hard to face reigning New England Champions, Governor’s Academy, in a special game played under the lights at Gillette Stadium. Belmont Hill jumped out in the first half to lead; however, a strong Governor’s team controlled the football during the second half and earned the victory. Throughout the entire season, the team never backed down from any challenge or adversity and always displayed great character.

The 2014 winners of the team’s MVP award were Harry Kraft, Lucas Ribeiro ’15, and Jack Tamasi. James Russo ’15 and Matthew O’Neal ’15 were presented with the Most Improved Player Award. The recipients of the Henry B. Sawyer Sportsmanship Award were Ian Arthur and Evan Chaletzky. Sultan-Farouk Olusekun ’15 (defensive back), Jack Tamasi (free safety), Seamus O’Donovan ’15 (linebacker), and John (Jack) Wilhoite ’15 (defensive end) were named to the All Independent School League second team. Evan Chaletzky (wide receiver), Matt O’Neal (running back), Lucas Ribeiro (offensive line), Harry Kraft (quarterback), and Charlie Durbin ’15 (wide receiver) were named to the All Independent School League first team. Charlie Durbin and Lucas Ribeiro were also elected to the first team Class B All New England team. The captains-elect for the 2015 season are Dean Demetri ’16, Robert Griffin ’16, and David Perdoni ’16.

Finally, we want to thank the graduating players for their contributions to the Belmont Hill Football Program throughout their careers.

The 2014 Belmont Hill varsity soccer team finished the season with an overall record of 8-5-3 to earn a seventh place finish in the competitive ISL. After losing its opening match, the boys were able to string together a four-game unbeaten streak to open League play.

Unflagging effort and hard work allowed Belmont Hill to compete in every match this season, even against the League’s toughest opponents. As the season progressed, injuries plagued the squad and the team lost several starters (and both captains) to significant injuries.

Leaving no opportunities for excuses, the team battled on. After a 7-2-2 start, the team managed one win out of its last four games, narrowly missing a chance at post-season play.

Tireless work from the back four and goalkeeper was the key to the team’s success. Allowing the third-fewest goals in the League, Belmont Hill allowed 16 goals in 15 matches, thanks in large part to the efforts of Joshua Fischer ’15, Christopher Bracken ’15, William Treanor ’15, Eric Butte ’16, and Robert Williamson ’17. Junkin ’15 also punched the clock as a defender and was consistent and steady. As the team’s most improved player, goalkeeper Eric Rolfs ’15 made tremendous strides and saves in net. Christian (C.J.) Layton’s ’15 contribution should not be overlooked as someone who helped Eric improve by forcing him to work hard in order to retain his starting job in net.

The center of the midfield was buoyed by two highly efficient and valuable sources in Filip Flenhagen ’15 and firstyear player Jack Bell ’18. Chad Meyers ’16, George Hu ’16, and Thomas “Chip” Daley ’16 were tenacious in fulfilling their roles as both offensive and defensive players. Pablo Di Benedetto ’16, Cameron Gordon ’17, Joshua Pradko ’15, and Robert Williamson ’17 also logged important minutes in the midfield thanks in large part to their skill and work rate. The team scored most of its goals off the foot of captain Emmett Gordon ’15 who netted 10 of the team’s 24 goals this season. Without his effort and quickness on and off the ball, the team would have been starved for goals.

netted four goals of his own. John Driscoll ’15, Spencer Anton ’15, and Warren Cross ’17 emerged as formidable players at the forward position.

Emmett Gordon and Josh Fischer both earned All ISL first team recognition, a deserving and hard-earned honor. All ISL second team honors went to Filip Flenhagen and Eric Rolfs.

Chris Bracken was awarded the team Sportsmanship Award while Josh Fischer and Emmett Gordon shared the honors for the Coaches’ Award as team MVPs. Next year’s captains will be Al Zenati and Chip Daley.

The coaches would like to thank the seniors for their commitment to the program. A special note of gratitude goes to Ariel Borsook ’15 who was prohibited from playing due to significant injuries, but who joined the team for practices. Thanks also to team managers Justin Grady, Alexander Andriolo, and Harry Porter. Finally, the team thanks parents, students, and supporters for an enjoyable and exciting season.

NEW FACULTY BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Davis joined the Belmont Hill faculty in 2014. She teaches Science 1 and A.P. Environmental Science. In addition, she coaches Middle School basketball and lacrosse and advises in Form VI. Dr. Davis comes to Belmont Hill from Wellesley College where she was a visiting lecturer of geosciences and also taught courses in marine geosciences, oceanography, and earth sciences.

She holds a B.A. with honors in geosciences from Williams College, an M.A., an M.Phil., and a Ph.D., all in earth and environmental sciences from Columbia University.

todd davis

matthew glenn

Dr. Davis rejoined the Belmont Hill faculty in 2014. He teaches Latin Alpha, Latin Gamma A, Latin 3, and Latin 3A. He also coaches Middle School football and wrestling and advises in Form II. Dr. Davis has extensive teaching experience, including ten years of teaching at the secondary school level at The Hotchkiss School and St. Paul’s School, as well as three years at Belmont Hill School from 1996–1999. Dr. Davis has six years of experience teaching at the university level at Columbia University where he taught courses in Greek, Latin, and Greek art and architecture. He holds an A.B. in classics from Harvard University, and an M.A., an M.Phil., and a Ph.D. in classical studies from Columbia University.

Mr. Glenn is the interim Director of Instrumental Music, filling in while Mr. Fiori is on sabbatical. He leads the Belmont Hill School jazz bands and orchestra and teaches Theory of Jazz and Music Technology. Mr. Glenn also advises in Form V. Mr. Glenn joins Belmont Hill School coming from the Oak Meadow School where he was the Assistant Head of School. Prior to that role, Mr. Glenn served as an instrumental music teacher at the Bancroft School where he directed the concert and jazz band program for grades 4–12 and taught Middle School and High School music theory and appreciation.

Mrs. Robison joins Belmont Hill as the Director of Theater. In addition, she teaches English 2 and English 3 and advises in Form II. Mrs. Robison comes to Belmont Hill School from Needham High School where she was a theater arts teacher and director.

She has also taught drama and English at Belmont Hill Summer School and was an English teacher and director of the drama department at the Woodward School. Mrs. Robison holds a B.A. in dance from the University of Oregon and an M.Ed. in English from Framingham State University.

Mr. Saucedo teaches Physics, A.P. Physics, and Engineering, and advises in Form VI. He also is a coach for Middle School lacrosse and is a faculty advisor for the Robotics Club. Prior to joining Belmont Hill School, Mr. Saucedo participated in a research training experience for teachers, funded by the National Science Foundation, at the Cornell Center for Material Science. He also was an Upper School science instructor at the Palmer Trinity School where he taught A.P. Physics C, Forensics, and Honors Physics. Mr. Saucedo received his B.S. in physics with a minor in mathematics from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and an M.S. in physics from Florida State University.

Dr. Tift teaches American Literature, English 3, Literature and Social Reflection, and Creative Writing. She is also the faculty advisor for The Bell and The Lyceum, and oversees the Belmont Hill School Poetry

Ms. Vailas joined Belmont Hill School in 2014 and teaches Environmental Science and Introduction to Physical Science. She also coaches varsity cross country and varsity track. She has worked as a research

Fest. She also advises in Form V. An independent editor and literature and writing tutor, Dr. Tift has worked extensively with Middle and High School students providing coaching for literary analysis and creative, narrative, and analytical writing. In addition, Dr. Tift worked at the Chapel HillChauncy Hall School where she was the English Department Chair and taught A.P. Literature and senior seminars. She holds a B.A. in English with a minor in women’s studies from Vassar College as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. in editorial studies from Boston University.

She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2014 with a double major in English and biology and was a team captain of the Dartmouth Women’s Varsity Cross Country team for three years and a team captain of the Women’s Varsity Track and Field team for two years.

Presented on behalf of the United States Army, Spirit of America is one of the Army’s largest community outreach programs and is designed to increase awareness of the Army’s rich heritage and showcase its premier ceremonial units.

General Milley inducted 55 young men and women during the ceremony.

Former faculty member JOHN WILSON writes that he and his wife, Nancy, have moved permanently from Lexington to Deer Isle, Maine. They recently built a yearround “green” house and garage on a lovely cove. John continues to produce top water fishing lures for bluefish and striped bass with his son, Ben, for their company, The Lonely Angler.

1971 HUNT WILLARD, an innovative leader in the fields of genetics and genome biology, has been appointed the next president and director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Hunt has earned a reputation as a groundbreaking scientist, a strong leader and builder of complex academic initiatives, as well as a talented teacher who has received multiple awards.

From 2003 to 2014 he was the founding Director of the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, a highly interdisciplinary unit that spanned the life sciences, engineering, medicine, social services, and the humanities. For that program, Hunt recruited 35 faculty members to Duke across 21 departments and established broad institutional strength in the genome

1981 JAMES SALZMAN, professor of law and environmental policy at Duke University, was the guest speaker at Belmont Hill’s annual Sherman Lecture on October 24. Salzman, author of Drinking Water, discussed how water highlights the most pressing issues of our time – from globalization and social justice to terrorism and climate change.

The lecture series is named after math teacher Michael Sherman, and is made possible through the generosity of Dr. and

Mrs. Edward Nalebuff and their son Barry ’76, who gave the lectureship to Belmont Hill in 1999.

1982 On August 17, six members of the Class of 1982 joined classmate PETER MONACO to help him celebrate his 50th birthday in Rockport. The party enabled friends and family to pay special tribute to their pal Peter, who not only has earned a reputation as one with a passion for a diverse variety of rock and roll music and a unique and humorous approach to life and work, but has also humbly and generously supported several leading charities, including the Steppingstone Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Boston.

The new Showtime documentary “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” that aired in late February was directed by GAUTAM CHOPRA. In a brief Boston Globe profile, Gautam was described as a die-hard supporter of New England teams, despite living on the West Coast, and his passion for the Celtics was said to have fueled a longtime obsession with the rival team. “The Lakers have been sort of this fascinating mythology for me… and Bryant is a true historian when it comes to the game. He knows more about the Celtics than anyone I’ve ever met.”

2003 Forbes Magazine recently released its “30 under 30” feature, and HARRY GREENE was selected for the group, based upon his work at age 29 as vice president of Goldman Sachs. Harry helps oversee a major portfolio at Goldman Sachs Investment Strategies unit, essentially a multistrategy hedge fund.

He focuses on special situations investments often involving distressed debt or merger risk arbitration. Harry graduated from Yale with a degree in economics and math.

NED MURPHY married Puyao Li on June 7, 2014. Both graduated from Yale in 2007.

They now live in Cambridge, MA, where Ned is working for The Level Up and Puyao is in her last year at Harvard Medical School.

FIELD YATES, NFL reporter for ESPN features including NFL Insiders, ESPN Insider, and ESPN Fantasy, spoke about his career at a School meeting on January 30.

After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2009, he worked for two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and interned with the New England Patriots. Mr. Yates also created an NFL blog entitled “Thoughts From The Field.” He can be followed on Twitter @FieldYates. When asked about a Super Bowl prediction, he said his preseason pick was the Seattle Seahawks…then predicted a Patriots victory.

2009 WOODY KLEMMER is the founder of GladlyDo, a new startup that pairs students with Bostonians who need odd jobs fulfilled.

Using email, he reached out a helping hand to potential clients in whatever way they needed. Thus, the first iteration of his startup was born: WAK Jobs, named after Woody and his business partner, Kyle.

Over six consecutive summers, the service was a success for its founders. Between 2006 and 2013, the WAK Jobs team grew to 16 employees for more than 1,000 clients.

2012 BRENDAN TREANOR was part of the NCAA lacrosse championship in the spring as a member of the Tufts University men’s team. A defenseman for the Jumbos, Brendan appeared in nine games this season as a sophomore, helping a Tufts defense that allowed only 228 goals throughout its 23-game season.

howard m. turner jr. ’36

Howard M. Turner Jr., of Monument, CO, died on November 2, 2014. He was 95.

He graduated in 1940 from Harvard College, where he rowed on the lightweight crew and was a member of the Owl Club. During World War II, Mr. Turner served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Turner was the loving husband for many years of the late Josephine (Ross) Turner. He is survived by his son, Howard R. Turner, his daughter, Hope Crooks, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He became a fundraising consultant, establishing the firm of Howard Turner Associates, and was a former resident of Fox Hill Village, Westwood, and Beacon Hill in Boston.

george b. baldwin ’38

George B. (Jim) Baldwin, of Hanover, NH, died on December 3, 2014. He was 94.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Cambridge, MA, in 1920, the son of the late Robert and Frances Baldwin. He went on to Princeton University, from which he graduated summa cum laude in 1942. A foot injury prevented all but a brief period of military service during World War II, and Mr. Baldwin worked during most of the war at the industrial relations section of the Princeton economics department, followed by two years at the Bureau of National Affairs in Washington, where he was active in the Newspaper Guild.

In 1947, he entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology to seek a Ph.D. in economics, which he was awarded in 1952. Mr. Baldwin remained at MIT on the faculty for the next four years then joined the economics department at Vanderbilt University, serving for two years as assistant director of the graduate program in Economic Development. In 1958, he was recruited by the Harvard Advisory Group, formed to help write a five-year development plan for the government of Iran, and in 1963 he moved once more to Washington to join the World Bank, where he remained until his retirement in 1985.

At the World Bank, Mr. Baldwin became assistant director of the Economic Development Institute and of the Population Projects department and senior advisor in the South Asia regional office. Although

he considered himself an applied economist, he continued his teaching for many years by giving evening courses in Washington-area universities.

Along with numerous articles, Mr. Baldwin was the author of four books: Beyond Nationalization: The Labor Problems of British Coal; Industrial Growth in South India; Planning and Development in Iran; and Papua New Guinea: Its Economic Situation and Prospects for Development.

For over 67 years, he was married to Harriet McAfee Brown, who with him traveled to or lived in many countries of the world and who shared in his mission to make personal contributions to world betterment.

In 2000, they moved to Hanover, where Mr. Baldwin taught various subjects in the Institute for Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth and served on the residents’ council at Kendal at Hanover. In Randolph, NH, where his family spent summer vacations for over 40 years, he was a member of the Randolph Mountain Club, the board of management of the Randolph Church, and the board of the Randolph Foundation.

Harriet Baldwin died in November 2013. Mr. Baldwin is survived by his daughter Sara (Sally) Fauquier and her husband Thomas, of Bethesda, MD; three grandsons, Ryan, Timothy, and Woody (Patrick); his brother, Robert Baldwin Jr. ’42, of Berkeley, CA; and his sister, Nancy Gorham, of Chapel Hill, NC. He was also the father of the late Alan McAfee Baldwin and brother of the late David B. Baldwin ’39.

charles l. tarbell ’42

Charles L. Tarbell, of Moultonborough, NH, died on February 8, 2015 at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. He was 92.

Born in Winchester, MA, in 1923, he was the son of the late George Grosvenor and Eleanor (Fink) Tarbell. He grew up in Lincoln, MA, and went on to attend Harvard College until service in World War II interrupted his studies. Mr. Tarbell enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific theatre, rising to the rank of staff sergeant.

After the war, he worked in the insurance business in Boston and in 1972 moved year-round to his cherished New Hampshire. He joined Annalee Dolls in Meredith as a production supervisor and later became a beloved bus driver for the Moultonborough school district.

A spirited competitor in football at Belmont Hill and Harvard, Mr. Tarbell was a lifelong sports enthusiast.

Always a bit of a daredevil, he received a commemoration from the State of New Hampshire at age 76 recognizing him as the oldest sky diver in New England.

edward dewey ’44

Edward (Ned) Dewey, of Bailey Island, ME, and formerly of Lincoln, MA, died in Brunswick, ME, on November 20, 2014. He was 88.

Son of the late Katherine (Pratt) and William R. Dewey Jr., Mr. Dewey grew up in Weston. He graduated from Harvard College in 1948 and saw active duty with the U.S. Army in Korea, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class and earning the Bronze Star. He joined the Industrial Equipment and Sales Corporation and served as its president for over 25 years.

He was active in veterans’ organizations and most enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Tarbell is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Moultonborough; his daughter, Diane Tarbell, and her husband, Steven Littman, of Harrison, NY; his son, Charles L. Tarbell ’76, and his wife, Janice Mirabassi, of Wakefield, MA; his grandchildren, Sarah and Kate Littman, Kevin A. Tarbell ’09, and Caroline Tarbell; his stepchildren, David Ames and his wife, Tracy, of Easton, NH; Debby Burton, of West Ossipee, NH; Christopher Clough and Kelly, of Dover, NH; and their children, Hope Rowe and her husband Clint, and their children, Melody, Joel, Kayla, and Jessica. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor T. Carmen, of Bedford, MA. He was also the brother of George G. Tarbell, Jr. and Ann T. Schubert.

Edwin M. (Mel) Higgins Jr., of Cambridge and Truro, MA, died on November 12, 2014. He was 84.

Born in Cambridge, Mr. Higgins was the only child of the late Edwin and Irene Higgins. He went on to attend Wesleyan University, completed his B.A. at Tufts University, and later earned an M.S. from Boston University. He served in the armed forces and received certification from the Counter Intelligence Corps.

In 1961, Mr. Higgins founded Higgins Associates.

With the early help of his former wife Joyce, who strove to keep their children clear of his home office, he built it into a successful company that invented “lifestyle” investments for pension plans, leading it for 40 years until his retirement.

werner s. willmann ’49

Werner S. (Fritz) Willmann, of Lincoln and Annisquam, MA, died on January 23, 2015. He was 83.

Mr. Willmann grew up in Belmont and went on to Harvard College, from which he graduated in 1953. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and after his discharge in 1955, he returned to Harvard to take an engineering course, which resulted in his lifelong interest in computers.

He began his employment in 1957 at Remington Rand in Boston, working with the Univac I computer. When the Sperry Research Center (later Unisys Corporation) opened in Sudbury in 1961, Mr. Willmann was hired as a scientific programmer and later became manager of the programming and computation department until the lab closed in 1984. He then worked at MIT Lincoln Laboratories until his retirement.

He was widely admired by his friends and family for his sense of humor, eclectic interests, intense curiosity, adventuresomeness, and virtuosic piano technique.

Mr. Higgins is survived by his wife of 27 years, Connie Higgins; his four daughters, Rebecca, Sarah, Jennifer, and Susannah; his son, Samuel M. Higgins ’82; his stepdaughters, Julie and Jennifer; twelve grandchildren, Katrina, Danielle, John, Isabel, Trevor, Dashielle, Sabrina, Sarah, Nicolas, William, Joyce, and Katherine; and three great-grandchildren, Eamon, Evelyn, and Beatrice.

Mr. Willmann had many absorbing hobbies and interests, including woodworking, violin repair, sailing, tennis, golf, bird watching, squash, billiards, table tennis, bridge, and poker. Playing pool with his friends at the Bedford COA was an important part of his life after retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret (Peggy) Martin Willmann; his daughter, Jennifer H. Willmann, of Oakland, CA; his son, Eric S. Willmann, of Bedford, MA; his daughter Heidi Richards and her husband Tony, of Northbridge NSW, Australia; his grandsons, Nathan and Sam Richards; his sister, Hildegarde Wilson, of Berkeley, CA, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Peter A. Willmann.

John G. Govan, of Plymouth and formerly of Duxbury, MA, died on September 8, 2014. He was 82.

Born in Boston, Mr. Govan was the son of the late Gerald and Grace (Harrington) Govan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and earned his B.A. from Babson College.

For many years, he owned and operated Duxbury Wine and Spirits in Halls Corner. After his retirement, he volunteered as a teacher of reading.

Mr. Govan is survived by his wife, Larisa Osintseva, of Plymouth; his son Matthew Govan, of Portland, ME, and daughter Maria Swanson, of Abington, MA; his grandchildren, Grace Govan and Travis and Hugh Swanson; and his sisters, Judy Murtagh, of Chelmsford, MA, and Joan Govan, of Annville, PA.

Edward E. (Ned) Brooks, of Waltham, MA, and formerly of Concord, died on February 24, 2015.

He was 78.

Born in Boston in 1936, Mr. Brooks was the son of the late Edwin D. Brooks, Jr. ’29 and Theodora E. (Lawrence) Brooks. He is survived by his brother, Hooper L. Brooks ’63, of New York, and a cherished friend, Ann Fletcher. He was also the brother of the late Frances D. Brooks.

robert m. mitchell jr. ’57

Robert M. (Mitch) Mitchell Jr., of Harvard, MA, died August 30, 2014. He was 76.

Born in Boston in 1938, he was the son of the late Robert and Janet (Sawyer) Mitchell. He grew up in Wellesley, MA, and graduated from Wellesley High School after attending Belmont Hill.

From an early age, Mr. Mitchell embodied the entrepreneurial spirit, working as a Fuller Brush salesman and starting up simonizing and Hole in One Club businesses as well as the M&M Landscape Company. He earned his B.S. at Babson College, where he was presented the college’s distinguished Business Incentive award and was instrumental in the founding of the men’s hockey program.

Upon graduation, he joined the B.F. Goodrich Company as a salesman, covering the New England region.

He would later join the Hope Company and go on to a lifetime career in industrial sales and distribution, culminating with his founding of Omni Services Inc. in Worcester, MA, in 1976, for which he served as CEO for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Mitchell was known widely for his optimism and progressive nature and appreciated for his exceptional generosity. He was devoted to gardening, support of New England sports teams, golf and travel, but most of all to his family and dear friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan Mitchell; his daughters, Karen (Paal) Brandvold and Sandy (Scott) Sloan; four grandchildren, Connor, Amalie, Liam, and Victoria; his brother Chris; and his grand dog Zoey.

At the time of publication, the School received word of the deaths of two members of the Class of 1962, John O. Parker, Jr. on March 18, 2015, and John A. Litvack on March 21, 2015. Their obituaries will appear in the next edition of the Bulletin.

jonathan nizel ’69

Jonathan Nizel, of Plattsburgh, NY, died on March 2, 2015 at his home. He was 63.

Mr. Nizel was born in Boston in 1951, the son of the late Dr. Abraham and Jeannette (Silverstein) Nizel.

He grew up in Newton and went on to earn a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Tufts University. He was employed by the Gillette Company for over 15 years as a research and design engineer.

In 1991, Mr. Nizel moved to Plattsburgh and founded a computer consulting business. But in the next year, he suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident. It affected his capabilities but, thankfully, left his sense of humor intact. Although he had to close his business, he worked for Champlain Valley Industries from 1998 to 2012.

Mr. Nizel was a lifetime member of the Plattsburgh Lions Club and a member of Temple Beth Israel,

where, in December 2014, he and his wife of 31 years, Lynn Schlesinger Nizel, renewed their wedding vows.

His curiosity led him to a variety of interests, including computers, model airplanes, word play, and dogs.

Being a devoted father to his two children was Mr. Nizel’s greatest joy and accomplishment.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Nizel is survived by his daughter, Caroline Sara, and his son, Isaac Jeremias; his brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Lesley Nizel, of North Miami Beach, FL; Mark and Frances Schlesinger, of Hingham, MA; and Ann and Asher Sheppard, of Santa Rosa, CA; his nieces and nephews, Lori and Jonathan Colan, Harris and Hana Nizel, Eva and Sven Wolf, Julia and Larry Zimmer, Abe Sheppard, Anne and Greg Armstrong, and Peter Schlesinger. He also leaves two aunts, Silvia Gore, and Dorothy Cline and her partner Zel Lurie, along with many grand-nephews, nieces, and cousins.

samuel g. letts ’00

Samuel G. Letts, of Boston, MA, died on February 2, 2015. He was 33.

Born in Columbus, IN, and raised in Wellesley, MA, Mr. Letts was the son of David and Christine Letts. He was educated at DePauw University. Mr. Letts became a real estate agent and worked at Boston Luxe LLC. He also was an avid Patriots and Indiana University basketball fan, and he enjoyed spending time with his family in Naples, ME, and Puerto Rico.

During his illness of the last two years, Mr. Letts lived life to the fullest, and he remained courageous and upbeat through the end. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife, Lexi; his sister, Hanna; and his grandmother, Brooxie.

frederic b. preston

Frederic B. Preston, of Hanover, NH, died on October 3, 2014. He was 84.

faculty

A graduate of Deerfield Academy in 1949, Mr. Preston joined the Class of 1953 at Williams College and later earned an M.A. (1963) at Boston University. After two years of service in the U.S. Air Force, he became a math teacher and athletic coach (soccer, hockey, crew), working first at Deerfield, then from 1957 to 1961 at Belmont Hill, and then at Needham High School. For 22 years, he was a Middle School principal in Needham and pioneered an educational approach that supported early adolescent students. He consulted with schools all over New England to promote change from junior high to middle school formats.

Mr. Preston was an avid outdoorsman and accomplished conservationist. Starting as a crew member and

hutmaster for the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) huts in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, he went on to become president of the AMC in 1981–82.

He also served in leadership positions at the the Squam Lakes Association and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust in central New Hampshire for nearly 20 years and facilitated public access to Squam Lake.

In 1966, Mr. Preston married Granthia Hoskins Lavery, who, with their children from their earliest ages, accompanied him each summer backpacking in near-wilderness areas such as the Canadian Rockies, the Sierra Nevada, the Grand Canyon, and the Austrian Alps.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Preston is survived by his children, Brooks, Lynelle, and Camille; five grandchildren, Sierra, Corben, Sage, Summer Thea, and Preston; and his brothers, Phil and Dave Preston.
