Foreword The Belmont Hill spirit springs from many sources.

Rather than being the result of one factor, it is the product of many. The dedication of the faculty, the fervor for academic advancement and extra-curricular participation, the enthusiasm of the athletes, and the loyalty of the alumni, all contribute to this spirit. The Class of 1960 hopes that our yearbook will serve as a tribute to this spirit, which influences every phase of school life at Belmont Hill.

In the two years since Mr. Richardson joined the faculty, he has invigorated the school's science program. Even more impressive than his interest in science, which has influenced all of us whom he has taught, is his eagerness to help faltering boys and to challenge exceptionally gifted students.

Although the class of 1960 will remember him as a teacher, we shall notforget him as a personality. His own brand of humor, his enthusiasm at athletic contests, and his sincere interest in the lives of Belmont Hill students have motivated us to dedicate this Yearbook to Mr. Frederick C. Richardson.

Few boys who thoughtfully assess their education at Belmont Hill canfail to realize their very real debt to the School'sfaculty or to acknowledge their abiding respect for many of their teachers. More than this respect and appreciation, however, is the friendship that manyfeelfor these men who have been genuinely concerned with their growth of mind and heart. It is this concern that so often distinguishes the Belmont Hill master and which has made the School so strong. So long as this basic. interest of thefaculty in the individual capacities and aspirations of each boy continues, the School is assured of a brightfuture of real educational service to all who have the opportunity to be members of it.

CHARLES FREDERICK HAMILTON, A.B. Headmaster Mr.Hamilton was graduated from Williams in 1933.

He came to Belmont Hill in 1942 and is now in his second decade of distinguished leadership of the School.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to extend to all members of the Class of 1960 my best wishes for your future success and happiness.

As a class you have again and again evidenced a fine spirit of unity and have given the entire school excellent student leadership. In a trying college-admissions situation many of you have exhibited great fortitude and patience.

Above all, you have accepted your many triumphs and occasional disappointments with equal grace.

I congratulate you all.

JOHN HENRY FUNK, A.B. After graduation from Harvard in 1941, Mr. Funk came to Belmont Hill the following year. He is Director of the Middle School and teaches French.

CHARLES JENNEY, JR., A.B. Mr. Jenney, the senior member of the faculty, came to the school in 1927, after his graduation from Harvard in 1926. He is Registrar for the Upper School, Director of Studies for the upper forms, and head of the Latin department.

JOSEPH CURRIER WILLEY, S.B., A.M. Mr. Willey, second in seniority on the faculty, was graduated from Princeton in 1929 and received his A.M. there in 193o.

He came to Belmont Hill in 5932 and since 5935 has been head of the English department. He is secretary to the faculty and the Cum Laude Society.

EDWARD DANA DENSMORE, A.B., A.M. Mr. Densmore is Registrar and Director of the Lower School. He was graduated from Bowdoin in 1932 and received his A.M. from Harvard in 1936, in which year he came to Belmont Hill. He teaches French.

HENRY BRAY SAWYER, JR., A.B. A graduate of Belmont Hill, 1932, Mr. Sawyer was graduated from Harvard in 1936 and joined the faculty that same year to teach English and Latin. He is faculty adviser to the Sextant.

MAYNARD WARREN MAXWELL, S.B. Mr. Maxwell was graduated from Colby in 5927 and came to the Hill in 1943. He is head of the mathematics department.

LEROY ALBERT HOWLAND, A.B., A.M. Mr. Howland graduated from Wesleyan in 1931, and received his A.M. from Harvard in 1934. He came to School in 1946.

He is head of the modern languages department and is head coach of tennis.

HERBERT MATTLAGE, A.B., Ed.M. A graduate of Dartmouth in 5939, Mr. Mattlage came to Belmont Hill in 5946 to teach physics and mathematics. He was awarded his master's degree by Harvard in 1949. He is head of the science department.

ANGELO TOGNERI A graduate of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Mr. Togneri since 1925 has directed the work in painting, drawing, modeling, and crafts. He also supervises work on the Sixth Form panels.

RICHARD LOUNSBERRY GREGG, A.B., A.M. Mr. Gregg, Harvard '38, came to Belmont Hill in 1942. He took his A.M. at Boston University in 1948. He is assistant to the Director of the Lower School, and teaches history and geography.

WILLIAM EDWARD CROKE, S.B. Mr. Croke, Boston University '36, is athletic director and head coach of basketball and baseball. Mr. Croke came to the Hill in 1943.

ROGER FENN DUNCAN, A.B. Mr. Duncan was graduated from Harvard in 1938 and came to Belmont Hill in 1945.

He teaches English and is head coach of crew and junior varsity coach of soccer.

He is also adviser to the Fourth Form and the Lyceum.

JOHN WINTERS FISHER, A.B., A.M., Ed.M. Mr. Fisher first came to Belmont Hill after his graduation from Harvard in 1947. He returned in 1956 after taking master's degrees, also at Harvard. He is acting head of the history department and varsity football coach.

WILLIAM COBBAN ROSS Mr. Ross, a graduate of Wentworth Institute, joined the faculty in 1952 to conduct the woodworking classes.

DAVID A. ALOIAN, A.B. Mr. Aloian was graduated from Harvard in 1949 and came to Belmont Hill in 1954 to teach English and Latin. He heads the Humanities Program and the Library Committee and is also assistant coach of baseball.

NEWELL HOWES MORTON, A.B., LL.B., Ed.M. Mr. Morton was graduated from Brown in 1932, took his LL.B. at Suffolk in 1943, and his Ed.M. at Boston University in 1952. He came to Belmont Hill in 1954 to teach and coach in the Lower School.

CHARLES W. SMITH, A.B. A former student at Belmont Hill, Mr. Smith was graduated from Yale in 1952 and joined the faculty in 1954. He teaches English in the Middle School, coaches junior varsity hockey and baseball, and is secretary of the Alumni Fund.

MICHAEL F. HUMPHREYS, A.B., A.M. Mr. Humphreys was graduated from Rutgers in 1952. He came to Belmont Hill in 1955 to teach French and Spanish.

He took his A.M. at Middlebury in 1958.

He is an assistant coach of tennis.

DUNCAN MORSE NELSON, A.B., A.M. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Belmont Hill faculty from 1955 to 1958. He left in 1958 to work towards his Ph.D. in English at Harvard University. He returned to Belmont Hill in the spring of 1960 on a part-time basis, to teach English and to advise the Yearbook board.

GERARD JOSEPH WALWORTH, S.B. Mr. Walworth was graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949. He came to Belmont Hill in 1955 to teach mathematics. He is head coach of hockey.

JERRY JOSEPH COCCHIOLA, A.B., A.M. Mr. Cocchiola was graduated from Clark in 1950 and took his A.M. at Middlebury in 1951. He joined the faculty in 1956 to teach French and Spanish.

DAVENPORT PLUMER, III, A.B., A.M. Mr. Plumer was graduated from Dartmouth in 1955 and took his A.M. at Harvard in 1956. He joined the Lower School faculty in 1956 to teach English and science.

FREDERICK B. PRESTON, A.B. Mr. Preston, a graduate of Williams in 1953, came to Belmont Hill in 1957 to teach science and mathematics. He is head coach of soccer and assistant coach of hockey and crew.

FRANK L. TAYLOR, A.B. Mr. Taylor, a graduate of Yale, who has done further study at Oxford and Harvard, joined the faculty in 1957 to direct the work in music and to lead the Glee Club.

ROGER B. BOOCOCK, A.B. Mr. Boocock, Princeton, 1956, came to Belmont Hill early in 1958 to teach mathematics and science. He is assistant coach of soccer.

FREDERICK COVERLY CALDER, A.B. Mr. Calder, a graduate of Harvard in 1957, came to Belmont Hill in 1958 to teach history. He is faculty adviser to the Panel.

ALBERT RAMSDELL GURNEY, JR., A.B., M.F.A. Mr. Gurney, a graduate of Williams in 1952, took his master's degree at Yale in 1958, in which year he came to Belmont Hill to teach English and Latin and to direct the work in dramatics. He is also an assistant coach of tennis.

FREDERICK C. RICHARDSON, A.B., Ed.M. A graduate of Harvard, 1949, Mr. Richardson took his master's degree there in 1951. He came to Belmont Hill in 1958 to teach chemistry and biology.

LEWIS GIBBENS WARREN, JR., A.B. Mr. Warren, a graduate of Harvard in 1949, came to Belmont Hill in 1958 to teach history, science, and geography in the Lower School.

OLIN H. INGHAM, A.B., A.M. A graduate of Duke in 1952, Mr. Ingham took his A.M. at Ohio State in 1954. He came to Belmont Hill in 1959 to teach history. He coaches junior varsity baseball.

LAURENCE HUNT SANFORD, JR., A.B., A.M. Mr. Sanford, a graduate of Princeton, class of 1945, took his A.M. at Harvard in 1954. He came to Belmont Hill in 1959 to teach history and mathematics. He coaches junior varsity basketball.

ROBERT CHARLES WORREST, A.B., A.M. Mr. Worrest was graduated from Williams in 1957 and received his A.M. at Wesleyan in 1958. He joined the Belmont Hill faculty in 1959 to teach science, biology, and mathematics.

The Senior year is almost too good to be true.

It offers most of the advantages of young adulthood and few of the disadvantages; it affords a newly sophisticated intellectual excitement for those who would seek it within a familiar and sympathetic environment; it consolidates meaningfulfriendships perhaps never again to be so intense; above all, it is full of the irresistible hope of undisappointed youth.

Looking Backwards In mid-September, 1952, fifteen meek, illiterate and uneducated boys sat in the front of the Lower School Building and stared in terror at Mr. Gregg, Mr. D.,"Moose" Mulliken, "Deac" Burroughs, Mr. Croke, the old Mr. Smith, and even Mr. Togneri. The latter personage we came to know better than ever in the Sixth Form. The original fifteen were: Chris Arterton, David Brooks, Henry Davidson, Tom Delaney, Ronnie Evans, Perky Falwell, Nat Ladd, Jim MacMahon, Aug Meyer, Bob Nickels, Art Norton, Crawford Sweeley, Bob Turran, Alex Varkas, and Johnny Welch. Eight of us "made it:" D. Brooks, J. MacMahon, A. Meyer, R. R. D. Nickels, A. Norton, R. Turran, A. Varkas, and J. Welch. A Lower School soccer team was formed for the first time, and everyone got their first glimpse of Nat "The Wizard" on skates. Mr. Gregg taught Geography, and Mr. Croke drilled numbers into us. The Good Deacon tried vainly to instill some Wagner and some Pomp and Circumstance into us. The synapses were not yet connected. We tried to connect them during rest period, but "Red Horse Hill" offered little stimulation.

GRADE SIX: We added Lewis Goodman, Kenny Yeates, both Duncans, John McGonagle, Alan Fishman, Doug St. Clair, and our omnipresent president, Nick Wessell. This year marked the coming of "Newt" Morton and the stardom of Mack the Canuck on the Lower School Hockey team. Education was beginning to be felt, and Yeates dazzled for one day in the math class of the old Mr.Smith,never to be heard from again. Everyone took the Greyhound Bus trip to the Navy Yard,and it rained on Fenway Park day. Mr. D.started giving half-hours to McGooch, and never stopped. By the end of the

year, the latter had thirty-two of them from the former. Baseball came, and with the Seventh Grade away on D-Day, we got the big steps for the first time. Meyer got an honor pin, and we were almost Lower School Seniors.

GRADE SEVEN: We added Paul Gill, Bob Russo, Steve Weller, Bob Nicholson, Bob Downes, Bill Silk, Elliot Harrington, and Bob Kargman. This was the year that we weren't bossed around any more. No, sir! The first day of school Silky found himself unlisted in all the school's records, and asked around. Finally, they agreed to let him stay. Steve Weller turned out to be the missing IBM machine of 1984. Soccer and football waxed strong, and shoulder pads were backwards on the uninformed. The Midgets started a long winning streak, and broke it later. Norton and MacMahon had some voice trouble in the play, but the dancing went off quite well. Goodman exchanged math for Latin answers with anyone and the Lower School Choir went to the Morgan Memorial to sing but found that the Deacon had forgotten the music. Finis, Lower School singing. Hockey again, and Kargman had two questions. Kargman came back from Florida looking not as white as when he had left. Baseball and scavenger hunts were here, and Mr. Morton worried about the Fay game. Nicholson started down his long road of losing debates as the powerful Pawnees swept again. If only they could have stayed out of trouble. There was D-Day, for us this time, and people fished and looked at antique Chevies and "Fahds." Doug St. Clair seemed bound for greatness, as his mother said, and we were in the upper school all of a sudden.

GRADE EIGHT: The class really swelled this year, as we took on John Allis,Tony Belluschi,Sam Brown, Jerry Caputo, 24

amounts, but his father would double whatever he won. After Mr. Lyons and a few more History classes, we left for another summer.

GRADE ELEVEN: Enter Reg Bradlee, Jack Cranney, Scott Cushman, Henry Greenleaf, Al Kline, Horse Mahlowitz, Dave Mechem, Chad Mitchell, and Tommy Thayer.

Dunk gave no "A's," and Mr. Richardson arrived. With his arrival came a new chem course and a Varkas-Hogan explosion that rocked the lab. Wessell got his license, and the good "doctor" Bettencourt preached safe-driving and bought donuts. Some of us went to Lawrenceville for the first time, and it rained. Headline news: one fifth of class caught cheating in history test as Nahigian smiled and took names.(Goodman escaped another dragnet.) The morning after we sang "God Send Us Men Whose Aim 'Twill Be." Sam Brown got kicked out of Mr. Fisher's History class and decided not to come back.

Hanify got it too. Dulac laughed and joined them. Soccer and football grew, and Mr. Funk became a morning feature. Howe Study Hall offered a new refuge for the lazy. Maxie taught us "straight football" and handed out a few flunks. Mr. Jenney adjusted his tie and talked of aqueducts and Vergil. Mr. Fisher's multiple-choice tests surprised not a few, and 15o questions greeted us on our last day. Gerry Sack had them all corrected by twelve o'clock. Phil Schier bought many, many books from the Harvard Coop, but the condensations did not help. Reg Bradlee had arrived, but no one knew it yet. Evans kept driving. Lew Goodman became Editor-in-Chief of the Panel by default. M.G. rolled over in his new VW,and Kargie made the Sextant board after years of talking. This was the last year of five courses, and marks leveled as the synapses hardened. Basketball kept a streak going that hasn't been broken yet, and the hockey team fought not ingloriously under G. Walworth and F. Preston. Thoughts of college became prominent, and applications and college boards were considered. Mr. Aloian described the Harvard library system, and some of us with telescopes saw Mr. Calder for the first time— could he be brought down to our level? Extracurricular activities boomed, and Sweller became president of the Science Club by write-in vote. Spring came, and restlessness set in again. The Corvette Club still grew, and young mens' fancies turned to thoughts of cars. We were on our way to our last year and slighdy easier work. After intramural tennis was said and done, and DiMare was kicked off the courts by Mr. Humphreys for wearing crew shorts, we were ready for another summer-reading farce and classic comic books. On to the Sixth Form. And there was Henley for Nasal Ned Blackwood.

SIXTH FORM: School rolled around once more, this time for the last time, and both the football and the soccer teams jumped the gun with illegal pre-school practice—none of it official, of course. For the less athletically inclined, there was intramural tennis, and Pistol Pete Gurney, who tried to teach Weller how to play the game of tennis. Goodman and Nicholson took on all corners in doubles. Welch lost his pants and shoes, but Duncan and Boocock were kind enough to return them to him. Then Sergeant Preston was stopped by Lt. Mahoney en route to a Harvard soccer scrimmage in the school paddy wagon, and Nasal Ned Blackwood stuttered his way to stardom in football. Sarge said "Jingoes, fellas," and talked about stream terraces and the playing fields of Deerfield.

English classes sped along (two months on "to be or not to be"). Football sloshed its way to defeat after defeat, and the soccer team caught the losing bug intermittently. Norton and Blackie tried to rally sagging spirits in the chapel, but the rain won out. Mr. Funk found an outlet in French IV, while even "Stilt" Calder couldn't always keep on top of the A section.

Bill Duncan played some Bach rock-'n'-roll in chapel, and Norton dedicated "Five-Foot-Two" to S. Ehrlich, an old pal

Tom DiMare, Roger Dulac, Larry Feinberg, Ed Hanify, Dave Hill, Greg Hunt,Paul King, Bob McNeil, M. G. Robinson, and Phil Schier. Then too, there was Nick Werthessen.

This was the year of discipline from the realms of Humphreys and Funk. Suddenly we were kicked out of study hall for doing what had been "all right" in the Lower School. "Brow" Tuplin took extra desserts and made bets with Sweeley, meanwhile explaining in Science II how dual exhausts made cars go faster because of Newton's law of action and reaction. We got our first taste of"Spike" Downes, and we wish we could have had more. C. Sweeley came up with his first 8.0% on an exam.

G. Wilbur Finch Keller began to heave erasers with amazing accuracy and regularity, eventually driving Norton to the "B" section and Wessell to tears of frustration. The cards were stacked against you in this game. A tree was shoved through Tuppie's window by Weller & Co. to better demonstrate natural science. Synapses were beginning to connect slowly but surely. Education was happening. Discipline was no problem—for some. Jim MacMahon was elected president for the third and last time. Baseball and graduation came and went again.

GRADE NINE: Jay Adams, Ned Blackwood, Bob Coyne, Bill Emerson, Don Hurley, Mike Morgan, Gerry Patrick, Gerry Sack, Jack Tanger, and Chris Wadsworth swelled the ranks in 1956. Mr. Cocchiola appeared. He gave notes to anyone who had got out of hand, and gave us all semi-optional hours on Saturday morning. Marbles got under the Rug, and Mr. Wright betook himself elsewhere, and Mr. Lanxner gave another set of hours, this time to the whole class. Junior Soccer waxed strong under the latter master, and Sawyer-Maxwell hockey busses left at 5:00 A.M. with yawning aspirants for the Varsity. Mr. Funk even took Nat Ladd out of a detention to help us beat Belmont High. Our marks meant something to colleges for the first time, and Mr. Duncan conducted English with an iron hand, kicking Norton and his math book out forthwith. Middle School dancers learned to dance now, and Meyer told his date (not Sally) to put her head on his shoulder. Disillusionment began. Another year.

GRADE TEN: The Shady Hillers began to invade BHS. Johnny Brooks (not a Shady Hiller), Mylo Denny-Brown, Paul Fremont-Smith, Steve Hood, Johnny Marks, Dave Morrison, Dale Samson, Jeff Stoneberg, Tommy Warren and Dick Wile graced our presence. Marksie discovered that flushing mice down toilets was not up to normal BHS behavior. Biology boys began to dissect cows' eyes and hearts, and blood flowed. Varsity teams were in sight. Sukiyaki restaurant in Boston saw the whole class swoop down on them, with Goodman mumbling "Remember Pearl Harbor" under his breath, and Mr. Fisher and Mr. Moore refusing to go oriental; they used forks to eat with instead of chopsticks. Mr. Mattlage tried to convince Nickels and Silk that Geometry IV was a lead-pipe cinch, but they were hammerheads and beat their brains out. Samson finished the year in February and subsequently went to Watertown High. We had Mr. Moore in history, and extemporaneous speeches produced an embarrassed Welch and some other red faces. Snowballs appeared in Mr. Howland's French class, and Wessell hacked for the last time.

Jack Tanger had a habit of spending Monday mornings in court, and the Marked Mice kept disappearing, albeit in high spirits. Mr. Sawyer came into class and Toby taught us English for another year. Kargman passed a note and H.B.S. failed to see the humor. More Jayvee soccer, and Steve Weller set up permanent residence there. This year marked the beginning of fading of men from our ranks for good. Evans drove illegally. Kargman's papers were late as usual, and "Chunky" became irate. The dorms became houses of horror, and fortunes were made and lost gambling. Gerry Sack won small 25

of Meyer's. Hood talked of honor and Washington and Lee and appealed to our baser senses. Steve Weller said something about the Science Club on the rostrum, but he lost himself somewhere in his notes. Kargie defended himself and the reasons for his dates, and Hurley spoke on the qualities of a Good Samaritan, but laughed when classmates faltered. There was "Glee Club at Flive o'cock"(who else could have said it?) and Horse Mahlowitz sent a Lawrence forward sprawling in the mud. This irked the coach.

Steve Hood kept really loose in those nets, and Roos was the victim of the Medford Mafia as he nearly lost his life in a puddle of mud. Kargman and Kimball set up a great passing combo, only to be stopped by the super-efficiency of J. Stonberg, who left the footballs at the Belmont Hill gymnasium.

The game was at St. Mark's. J. H. Funk took an oversized umbrella to the final football game (the fifth rainy one) of the season. Smith and Blackwood got their heads over the goal line but not the ball. The final rally came off in the rain, and donuts were stolen. The parade through the center produced no cops but three accidents. F. B. Preston scuffed the dirt, and boys learned about things from J. H. F. Varkas went to the Sanford drags and ended up in the hospital with tired blood full of aluminum.

The Panel started a series of dinners.(MacMahon owes Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Weller five quarts of milk apiece.) Nicholson and Weller went in to get the Malayan ambassador but ended up walking half-way home. Ned and Co. put up three or four streamers for the Fall sports dance; there were pictures of the well-rounded athletes on the walls, and Wessell stayed home, and studied. Tommy Warren memorized 2o books.

The football team's final record was 4 losses, 3 wins. Meyer did get in, but he soiled his shirt and they took him out again.

Harpsichord Hanify was benched after the first three games, which the team lost. Fremont-Smith showed determination, but he spent much of his time on the ciderlines. Kargman went to and from the doctor all season, but played on with the help of the Band-Aid Company. Thayer, Cushman and Hill continued to evoke tremendous cheers from the fans, while Hurley conversed with Jayvee fans as he played.

In the mud season, Mr. Richardson amazed the crowds with his prowess at touch football. Fish strikes hit the dining hall, while Dan Hennessey swept the floor, only to have Hurley lock him in the Howe furnace room. The captains' game was played on a frozen field, and knees were skinned. Lawrenceville was almost a total loss(7th place). Meyer suspected that this would happen, and rammed a truck so that he could avoid the humiliation. Mechem and Varkas enjoyed wall decorations, while Al appeared nude on the balcony of the Dial Lodge—the Greek God image. Mr. Calder sat on the fence in the second period but had the courage to present the fourthperiod class with his daily quote. Mr. Maxwell had endless lists of people who had to see Miss Lord. Mr. Funk showed movies during mud time, and the intellects started studying for exams. The Stilt put on his winter coat, and never took it off. (Those Russian winters!) Mr. Richardson gallantly prevented explosions, while the Sextant board met and scoffed collectively. Humanities tried to define tragedy by reading Antigone, King Lear, Death of a Salesman,et al, but never quite made it. Christmas came and brought the Harvard Gymkhana. New Year's brought Fremont's big cider blast. Blackie saw red, then green, then nothing. Thayer and Fremont borrowed a truck in Weston Center, but the police had other ideas, as did the owner. Kargman, driving his tractionpowered Packard, was late for chapel.

In the wintry winds, college applications were made and college boards were taken. The hockey team won and lost, and shoveled the rink, where J. Cranney went skin-diving. The

basketball team did nothing but win, but they sent in the "Rinks" so that the opposition could hit double figures.

Mechem took to Carter's little pill and whispered encouragement to the hockey team. Coach G. Walworth remained silent on the matter. Fremont kept training throughout the winter season, while many hardy lads braved the elements to procure and thaw out their bottles of frozen milk. Al Kline set a Common Room record by smoking five cigarettes during one recess period, and J. Allis stank up the place with his Russian cigarettes (pre-Summit, of course). D. Brooks kept blowing smoke rings. J. Mack got an hour from Nasal Ned for humming during study hall; T. Warren got his love letter in the ice, while Mr. Calder found a black and white cat in his favorite desk drawer.

Mr. Preston showed endless slides of the western part of the U.S., and D. Hurley stuck his infamous initials into pieces of basalt and limestone. The basketball team kept winning, while the "Rinky-Dinks" continued to confuse their coach, if not the opposition. House in the Pines came down for a Glee Club concert, to which Mr. Taylor arrived late. (He had been in jail, it was explained later, and had to be bailed out by Mrs. Taylor.) The concert precipitated many trips to Norton, Mass., led by D. Morrison, who acquired a new scarf, and J. MacMahon, who burned out a short romance. For those who had not attended the concert, the Glee Club put on an encore performance the following week in chapel. Lewie Goodman, turned down by the club,saw his chance for revenge and wrote a blistering editorial.

Kinasewich came to town and skated for a while. When he left, he had three more goals. Welch tied Kargie for the scoring lead with a blazer from center ice in the St. Mark's game. The Wellesley High affair resembled a Bruins-Rangers game— blood flowed and tempers spilled. Belmont swung sticks better, though, and emerged the scarred and angry victor.

The blizzard of dreams finally descended, and Grunt set up a hotel, with guests Feinberg, Kline and Weller. Two and a half feet of snow stopped even the jeep, and school was nixed that day. The basketball team, mentioned previously, found that the clock was a terribly useful defensive weapon, and with it they beat Hopkins Grammar for the big title. Also there was the snowball fight, which we lost. We omit that.

D. Hurley looked forward to Stowe, and decided to get some practice. Skiing on 6o-foot Jehricho Hill, the ankle was sprained, of course, and so he liked beaches better as a result.

To Florida, of course.

Mr. Cocchiola discoursed on the miracles of Lourdes, and Mr. Sanford followed him to the rostrum with quotations from Rousseau to prove that children were brats.

The Stowe caravan left Boston on the first Sunday ofspring vacation. Al got sideswiped and almost had to leave the Corvette where it lay. Sam Brown found good use for the wastebasket, while Hood and Hill had a gargling contest. Meyer thought of Sally, Wile was beyond thinking, and Fremont and his jug were in the jug. New romances were made, and the Canadian Crush Club was organized. Winterhaus instituted one light bulb, at the desk. Ski-bum Denny-Brown waited outside and finally waited inside. J. Allis stayed away from it all over at the Stowe-Tok and drank buttered rum. Hap Emerson broke some trees and some skis, but his neck was too thick. Rubberneck Gilchrist kept the cards straight, while the Corvette club held its March meeting. The rains came, damn it, and people went home. Kargie found out that the Packard was not an amphibian, while Fremont had a roadside rendezvous with an underclassman.

School reconvened again in April, and one of the first items of business was a Good Friday service. Mr. Duncan took chapel the following week and presented a "Unitarian Easter"

to counter-balance the Episcopal Good Friday. The Panel wound up business, and Lew put away his sun lamp. Norton organized the Welcoming Committee to avoid a fifth year of intramural tennis, and he dragged in many of his comrades.

The Glee Club sang with, and against, Brimmer and May before an audience of 37 in the gym; Dave Hill gave a party and John Welch's date smoked bananas. Glee Club President Tom Thayer tried his pugilistic ability with a Yale boxer, and came back with a wired jaw: there ensued six weeks of mashed meals at Miss Lord's office.

The Baseball team surprised everyone by beating St. Mark's and Gerry Skey, and Belmont fans found out that their team wasn't the only one with outfielders who couldn't catch fly balls. Treadwell, after having run all over Belmont in football and hockey, returned to drub the Hill in baseball; Kargman kept getting picked off and watched the Prouty Baserunning Trophy vanish. Jim MacMahon won the only Belmont point in the Middlesex match, when his opponent sprained his back and defaulted. There was glee club at 1:40 and Russman, and crew regardless of the weather. Ed Hanify almost hit a home run, but couldn't burrow under the opposing catcher.

Panels were started, and Mr. T.joked in the Hobby House.

Russo, having jumped the gun starting, finished first, and also took the Panel prize. "William Jennings Bryan" Nicholson, after years of unsuccessful trying, finally won the Woodbury Prize, shocking Mr. Cocchiola with his plea for recognition of Communist China. Don Hurley, having gone down to defeat with his "Redevelopment of Boston" speech, saved it and handed it in as his thesis. Flett and Sliney trucks blew dust in the eyes of people on the tennis courts. Hence the bad tennis record.

Mr. Calder decided that it was too dangerous to sit on the fence, and ran away completely with his discussions of Prussian Junkers, German prison camps and "braille." There was the Freshmen Orientation meeting, at which the backbenchers bickered. Norton and Morgan teamed up for piano duets such as "A Mighty Fortress Rock" and "How Happy Is He Born and Taught" in ragtime.

Thesis time rolled around, and boys hurried to Widener, Tufts, or any place where they could plagiarize material.

Lewie resurrected an old China paper for a B+, while Kargman kept talking about how the Sobels had been "sent up wrong." Harvard and the rest of the colleges sent back their notices, and the artillery was very heavy: thirteen out of 48 were shot down in the first barrage. Harvard pulled one surprise after another, and Blackwood chose Stanford.

Esquire Day was the best in years, with "Uncle Tom" Russo, Feinberg and the make-up he couldn't get off, Fremont and Blackie, Wile and Hill. Mylo Denny-Brown showed the animal in him by pulling out a Marlboro, while Nickels came in a barrel. Morgan, Mechem and Hurley were unbeatable as the Club Zara act, even though Hurley had to bribe the night watchman for his uniform; Mike Morgan had full control of himself when the "cops" raided this time.

People continued to irritate ByrneHudson by disconnecting his electric broom, and Kline wrestled with Blackwood on a Common Room sofa. Nicholson and Wessell presented an amendment to the Constitution, but Lew was angry that he hadn't written it, and led the forces which sent it down to defeat.

Reverend Cole gave a fine baccalaureate talk, that was meaningful and short. Mrs. Welch and the Belmont mothers organized a lovely lunch, before Prize Day exercises, and everyone sang "Allouette" (a la Belmont Hill) in the chapel before marching into the tent. Straw hats were the order of the Prom evening, as Wessell showed up accompanied by his 27

camera. Augie and Sally were deluged with crepe paper, as Ken Reeves and the boys played on. Intermission entertainment by the CYO band managed to depress spirits a little, but a fast hora, played in honor of the NEFTY couple, livened things up. We were graduates and could first-name masters, but no one did. Mr. Hamilton was still Mr. Hamilton.

DiMare and Varkas ran a fabulous "after-party" bedlam.

It had been announced that no drinks would be served. This being the case ... well, it was quite a case. There was dancing, and no one fell into the Varkas' lily pond. Wessell tasted his first beer; Nicholson played champagne music and Hill hit the high notes. A few went to Emerson's on the Cape, and "Mr. Clean" ran a breakfast party. People struggled home to the realization that all was now a memory, and with the exception of the Yearbook staff, Belmont Hill was just another part of the past.

After all this confession, let us add our sentiments and here list the "guys who never made it."

GUYS WHO NEVER MADE IT Adams, 9: Weston High needed a football captain, and Jay played football. Why stay?

Arterton, 5: Too good a guy to slash.

Belluschi, 8-1I: The mobster image faded from '6o along with his baby blue Cadillac.

Caputo, 8-so: Jerry got cut short along with his hair after he got f(l)unked.

Coyne, 9: Bob spent a whole year at the Hobby House trying to build an invisible shield. From there to B & N. Davidson, 5-9: Moved his pool to Weston for the coeds.

Delaney, 5-11: Bubbles wanted to make the Corvette Club a tradition.

Duncan, R., 6-8: Bob was a martyr and joined '61 to prevent inter-family rivalry.

Evans, 541: Liked '61 better.

Falwell, 5-6: Perky's goat kept him so busy that he moved to greener pastures.

Fishman, 6-7: His eyes were shut more often than not. He studied elsewhere.

Gill, 7: One of the more active members at 7th grade D-Day. Less active on exams.

Greenleaf, Is: He had a 93% average at Robert Louis Stevenson School, but he got sacked with Sack.

Harrington, 7-8: Elliot "The Voice" stayed another year to perfect his skating.

King, 8: Left to ring Miss King.

Ladd,5-50: Went from hockey to Barbara to Kathy to TrinityPawling to St. Sibby's.

Marks, so: Mr. Mattlage didn't like John's mouthwash. John packed up his mice and left.

McGonagle, 6-9: John saw no future for hockey with academic probation.

McNeil, 8-so: A good guy who vanished along with the mobsters.

Sack,9-II: Complimentary movie tickets just weren't enough.

Samson, so: Came to us from '6i; left in search of more challenging hills and Dales.

Schier, 8-11: Further education was pointless without Chunky.

St. Clair,6-7: Disappeared. Re-appeared a year later, president of Cambridge Latin grade 8.

Sweeley, 5-8: He and R. Downes broke up and one had to go.

Tanger, 9-so: Left with an armful of Sextants to become the best short story writer in Wayland High.

Werthessen, 8-9: Burning the Second Form Study Hall was one thing but burning Mr. Funk's draperies was another. Up in smoke went St. Nick.

Yeates, 6: He returned to Idaho, then came back to Harvard. (continued on page 146)

Lower School The Lower School rounded out its thirtieth year as a separate administrative unit, looking back to the first decade under Mr. Barker and Mr. Wilson. Mr. Densmore returned from a half-year sabbatical to resume his duties in September.

Much appreciation was due Mr. Gregg for his work as actingdirector in Mr. Densmore's absence. There were no faculty changes, and again a full complement of sixty-five boys filled the Study Hall. Under George Warren, Class Seven president and Student Council leader, assisted by James Andreson, president of Class Six, and co-presidents John Olive and Robert Cushman of Class Five, the School had unusually fine leadership.

The Fall football season was a bit thin in the winning column; however, an undefeated though thrice-tied soccer team helped balance the picture. The Intermediate Football team, under Mr. Warren and Bob Nickels, blanked Fay in the opener 6-o and rallied to almost nip Rivers, 6-13; but then they were crushed by Roxbury, 28-0, before tying Nobles, 6-6. The final game saw Fessenden win by 21 to 7. The starting backfield saw Moore and Quinn alternating at left half with Byrnes at right. Rines was quarterback and Fletcher was at full.

Willard centered, flanked by guards Whipple and O'Conor, tackles Spilios, Chase, and Palmer, and ends Summers, Olive, and Fenollosa. Page, Williams, Hurley, Atkins, Lintner, and Stewart were subs. The Cubs, coached by Mr. Morton with Steve Carr as assistant, opened with a tie against Fessenden, followed by a sparkling 28-0 defeat of Rivers. They weakened in mid-season, however, losing two close decisions, 12-20 against Roxbury and 6-14 to Fay. The final game was a satisfying victory over traditional rival Fessenden, 12-6. Jim Andreson provided the scoring punch for the team, along with Captain Jack Reed. Counihan's passes were also outstanding.

Mueller and Karelis did the quarterbacking and were strong

defensively. Poulin was a fine center and Pickman, Crapo, and Moulton were strong in the line. The Cub "B" team played Park's first squad twice, losing by scores of 28-6 and 18-12, but gaining valuable experience under fire.

The Soccer team, with Mr. Plumer and Mr. Gregg in command, had a good season. The opening game saw a highscoring victory over Shore Country Day, 5-o, but the next two

games were frustrating ties, against Sudbury, i-i, and Shore, also i-i, on their home field. In a home-and-home series with Fessenden, the team registered a 3-o victory, and another tie. Captain Harry Jordan and Paul Zofnass, along with Pren Claflin and Brian Joyce, provided the scoring punch. The starting line was usually Clain, Jordan, Joyce, Zofnass and Spitzer or Trodella; half-backs Price, Herron, and Gill; and full-backs Beal and Parson or Hubbard protecting goalie Dick Baker. Rick Howe and Bob Ryan also saw action. The Soccer "B" team gained much valuable experience in a home-andhome set with Meadowbrook's first team, losing 4-0 and 4-I. They also lost to Applewild ofFitchburg 3-0, but they defeated Belmont Day r-o.

The Hockey team was again coached by Mr. Warren, and they finished a second undefeated season, winning over Fessenden 6-1 and 4-2,over Browne and Nichols 4-I and 4-3, and also defeating Nobles 3-0 and Arlington 6-4. Tommy Koslowski centered a powerful first line, with Randy Byrnes at right wing and Captain Pete Mueller at left. Bob Price, Jim Summers and Ted Counihan covered defense, with Moore and Moulton alternating in the nets. Other forwards seeing action included Clain, Fenollosa, Howe, Lintner, Karelis, Olive, Murray and Spilios. Parson, Herron, and Stewart were defensemen, and Atkins a goalie. A pony line of Downes, Dane and Elwell was also used. Mr. Morton's J-V team tied two against Fessenden and Meadowbrook, but dropped a return with Meadowbrook.

In basketball, Mr. Plumer's charges did not fare too well, but most of the games were close. The team split encounters with both Fay and Lincoln, while losing to Fessenden, Read-

ing, and B 8z N. Starters included Captain Jack Reed, Paul Zofnass, Bob Gill, Scotty Beal, Dick Baker and Ted Williams.

Others seeing action were Herman, Spitzer, Andreson, Poulin, Bolan, Chase, and Schmidt.

Mr. Morton's Intermediate Baseball team broke a little worse than even, winning over Rivers 5-3 and Pike School of Andover 2o-6, posting a tie with Roxbury, and being edged by Fay 4-3, Rivers 8-5, and Fessenden 4-2. Brian Joyce, with Pren Claflin as sub, caught pitchers Byrnes and Koslowski.

Price and Stewart covered first, Zofnass and Spilios second, Moore and Trodella short, and Reed and Counihan third.

Beal, Lintner, Olive, Summers, and Mueller were outfielders.

Ty Peabody and Joe Scaring helped coach the B Team. The Cub baseball team, under Mr. Warren, finished with a 2-3 record, beating Fessenden 14-2 and Rivers 3-I, but losing to these teams in return games by 6-1 and 6-o scores. The team also lost to Roxbury. Captain Fred Poulin was catcher for starting pitcher Joe Parson; Poulin and Downes also saw mound action. Bolan, Moulton, Downes, and Silk were the infielders, while Pickman, Ellis, and Andreson covered the outfield. Herman, Chase, and Schmidt also saw action.

The tennis courts were again busy in the spring, with Mr. Plumer directing the activities. A record draw in the Annual Singles Tournament saw Ted Counihan emerge as champion; he defeated plucky fifth-grader Linc Holmes in the finals.

Other semi-finalists were Price and Fenollosa.

browski, and Silk making up the team.

In December the Lower School, under Mr. Taylor's direction, presented a Christmas play with music, "Crib at Greccio," in the Chapel. Mr. Togneri's art classes provided effective scenery. Fred Poulin sang the part of Brother Francis, with Bill Karelis and Ricky Trodella also in lead parts. A group of Friars, Bob Price, Pren Claflin, Paul Zofnass, Bob Ryan, and Geordy Olive were especially effective.

In March the Lower School put on a successful performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, "H.M.S. Pinafore," again under Mr. Taylor's direction. Mr. Togneri's art classes painted magnificent sets and Mr. T. also assisted in the direction. Mr. Gregg and his crew did a fine job of staging. Several mothers helped with the costumes. Leads were played by Fred Poulin as Sir Joseph, Guy Herman as the Captain, Kip Dabrowski as Josephine, Geordy Olive as Buttercup, Pren Claflin as Cousin Hebe, Bill Karelis as Dick Deadeye, Jack Lintner as Bill Bobstay, and Mark Schmidt as Ralph Rackstraw.

The year was marked by traditional events: the carnival for the Charity Fund brought a cascade of pennies to swell the Lower School donation; the annual Christmas Tree for the Library brought many new volumes; the Valentine Party at the Day School was again well attended. The bi-annual Gray Line tour of historic Boston came in April, and soon it was May and time for Fathers and Sons Day, which saw an unusually high percentage of fathers on hand to watch the baseball games and join in softball before and after the cook-out.

Class Seven's outing was again at the Densmore place in Princeton. Aside from the usual baseball and tennis, a record number of trout gladdened the hearts of the fishermen, while others enjoyed the Auto Museum. Finally the last week came, with the Pawnees edging the Apaches in the Treasure Hunt, and the boys swinging at Mr. Croke's pitches in the annual Class Seven vs. Faculty game.

George Warren, along with Paul Zofnass and Jack Reed, brought out several fine editions of the "Log"; Warren teamed with Clain to write "Splinters." Sixth-grader Dave Dewey did a fine job as librarian; Spilios and Claflin were the storekeepers; Jack Lintner was an able poundkeeper. Class Seven presented the School with a lovely hemlock tree, planted with due ceremony on Prize Day. On June 8 Lower School Prize Day was held in the Chapel.

It was a beautiful day and a large crowd was on hand to see Class Seven finish their Lower School careers. After Mr. Densmore made a short introductory speech, he introduced

Geoffrey Parker, President-Elect of the Sixth Form for next year, who welcomed Class Seven for the Upper School, and then Mr. Funk, who spoke to the future middle-schoolers on some of their responsibilities. Next Mr. Densmore presented the various prizes and awards. George Olive accepted the cup for the winning Apaches and the Iroquois debating team received the Barker plaque. The art prizes went to Richard Howe, who won the Parents' Award, and to David Moulton, who received the Jury Award. The annual Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Togneri Award for outstanding art work went to Robert Ryan. This year the William C. Ross prize for excellence in shop work was awarded to Jack Lintner and Paul Zofnass.

The Gregg Social Studies Prizes for outstanding work in this field went to Anthony Thompson in Class Five, to Frederick Poulin in Class Six, and to George Warren in Class Seven. The Director's Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding boy in Class Seven, for the first time was given to two boys, George Warren and John Reed. In Class Seven, honor pins for academic excellence went to Michael Fenollosa, Richard Howe, William Karelis, John Lintner, Harrison Moore, George Olive, Robert Price, John Reed, Robert Ryan, George Warren, and Paul Zofnass. Receiving pins in Class Six were James Andreson, James Bolan, Andrew Frazier, Edward Moulton, Frederick Poulin, Mark Schmidt, Richard Silk; and in Class Five, Robert Cushman, Alexander Ellis, Lincoln Holmes, Martin Mugar, John Olive, Roger Swain, Anthony Thompson, and Jonathan Whipple. The exercises closed with a talk by Mr. Hamilton and the singing of a hymn.

Because they are extra-curricular, there is a spontaneous and bustling aura about the activities at the school which forms a welcome contrast to the pressures of classroom and athletic field. This is not to say, however, that they are an after-thought, casually attended and essentially unproductive. The activities are active, all right, and it takes an able boy to keep up with more than one of them. A great number seem to find it congenial, working with others with similar affinities towards some mutual end; most of them would add that it is rewarding; very few would call it educational, but I suspect that it is.

Student Council For years the student body has been asking, "Just what does the Student Council do?" This year's Student Council was as much concerned with innovating as it was with maintaining. During the week before school, the Council met to appoint proctors and to revise the Howe study hall rules. The Council not only maintained the Crackers and Milk Squad, the Welcoming Committee, and the Library Committee, but added the Towel Squad to supervise the distribution of towels every afternoon.

During the fall, the Council sought to encourage attendance at football and soccer games.

Letters were sent to the parents personally inviting them to the games. Programs and cheerleaders were introduced at the games to drum up school spirit. There was also the annual cider and doughnuts fall sports rally.

The Annual Charity Appeal raised $670, the largest amount ever contributed to the appeal.

Substantial contributions were given to the Foster Parents' Plan, the United Fund, Care, and the Cancer Fund. Under the Foster Parents' Plan, the Council supported for one year a ten-year old Greek child, Vassilios Getimoglou, who corresponded frequently with the school.

The re-establishment of the Canteen was the Council's most popular innovation this year.

Vending machines for soft drinks, ice cream, and

candy were installed. The trash problem was overcome by the formation of a Grounds Squad.

During the course of the year, the Council made suggestions to Mr. Hamilton for a future Exchange Student Program and for the possibility of serving milk at lunch. The Council also proposed an Amendment on Class Elections, which failed to attract the necessary two-thirds majority of the student body for ratification.

Athletic Council at the end of each season, and maintained the customary high standards of the school letter. It set up a system for the distribution of towels in the gym, cutting down the loss and destruction of school linen. It also organized, with the help of Mr. Preston, a sound Welcoming Committee system, making sure that visiting teams found their way to the locker room and had refreshments after the game.

This year the Council met with Head Manager Jeff Stonberg, to consider the founding of a "manager's plaque," which would bear the names of all the Varsity managers and the Head Manager, in honor of their incalculable and inadequately recognized contribution to Belmont sports.

Motions to change the wording of the training pledge stirred up a great deal of argument, but had little success. There was discussion also on the question of khaki pants at away games; there was some feeling that only grey flannels should be worn, but the Council made little progress on this score. Nonetheless, the Athletic Council can point to 1960 as a year of accomplishment and advance.

In the second year of its existence under the 1958 Constitution, the Athletic Council played an active part in the control of the school's teams and athletes. Early in the year the ten boys on the Council elected Mr. Frederick B. Preston to be their advisor. This year's Athletic Council consisted of Edward Blackwood, basketball captain and president of the Council; Arthur Norton, soccer captain; David Mechem, hockey captain; Paul Fremont-smith, football representative; William Emerson, wrestling captain; John Cranney, baseball captain; Christopher Wadsworth, crew captain; Thomas Warren, tennis captain and secretary of the Council; Jeffrey Stonberg, managerial representative; and Nils Wessell, who, as ex officio president of the Council, sat in on every meeting. Mr. Croke, Director of Athletics, was also present at meetings.

The Council firmly established the training pledge this year, requiring that all varsity and junior-varsity athletes sign the no-smoking and no-drinking agreement. It took positive steps against those who did not follow its rules.

Panel All across the board, Volume VII had a winning season. The editorial board under Lewis S. Goodman, "The Chief," received a higher first-place rating than did Volume VI, and the business board, under Business Manager Alan H. Kline, raised more money than any other Volume in the Panel's history. But aside from these achievements, those people involved with producing the fourteen issues of Volume VII are grateful for many fond memories and wonderful experiences.

Few will forget "The Chief," and those ultraconservative shirts he wore on Thursday nights, not to mention his glorious "suntan." Then there were the artistic pictures by Photography Editor Steven Weller, featuring several faculty members up against a flattering brick-wall background; and the chronically belated arrivals of Feature Editor Robert Kargman, who invariably shoved "57" into the hands of faculty adviser Frederick Calder with a frantic, "Is it funny?" Always in evidence was News Editor James MacMahon, lengthening word counts of stories that were practically nonexistent, along with Sports Editor Nils Wessell, who usually had the sports coverage finished before the Panel was "put to bed."

This year's board created a few unusual posts.

Due to the fact that there were four associate editors, they tended to specialize. Larry Feinberg was the unofficial "refreshment editor"—faithfully supplying the editors with cookies and Cokes.

Bob Nicholson, writer of "World Outlook," became our special political analyst. Across his columns marched a parade of characters, ranging from the Malayan ambassador to an election- 68

winning rhinoceros.

If Volume VII is to be remembered for any single issue, that issue would be its special eightpage edition, the longest in the Panel's history, on "Education During the 1960's." The Panel interviewed Presidents Pusey of Harvard, Sachar of Brandeis, Wessell of Tufts, and Stratton of M.I.T. to elicit their opinions on the educational outlook in general; Headmaster Hamilton and Mr. Henry Meyer, President of the Executive Committee, were also interviewed on the more particular question of future prospects at Belmont Hill and at other secondary schools of its nature.

A feature on Milton's language laboratory was instrumental in the establishment of a -similar program at Belmont Hill, and through that effective weapon—the editorial—the Panel provided inspiration for the adoption of a foster-child in Greece, and agitation resulting in the revision of the summer-reading program.

Volume VII came to a close at the annual Panel banquet. This year's guest speakers were Claude E. Welch, Jr., President of the Harvard "Crimson" and editor-in-chief of Volume IV of the Panel, and Benjamin H. Coffin, Business Manager of the "Crimson" and of Volume IV of the Panel. The editors of Volume VIII were announced: Editor-in-Chief, Kenneth J. Annis; Business Manager, Peter Segal; News Editor, Carl Henry Amon; Feature Editor, Richard P. Leavitt; Photography Editor, Lewis Moorhouse; Circulation Manager, Robert N. Elwell; Managing Editor, William H. Claflin.

Sextant The Sextant, under the supervision of Mr. Joseph C. Willey in the first half of the year and Mr. Henry B. Sawyer in the second, and with Samuel C. Brown, Jr. as editor-in-chief, continued the long standing tradition of clever prose, interesting narrative, sensitive poetry, and general originality that has marked the tri-annual publication for so many years. The "Points After" and Exchanges column were eliminated this year to streamline the magazine and center interest on student contributions. The "Short-sightings" and the "Sportscene" were retained, to make note of occurrences around the school during the year, and to present them in a lucid and readable fashion.

The December issue contained a story entitled "Prayer," by Tison Street '61, which skillfully reflected an unhappy outlook on life. Thor Soggnaes '62 wrote an amusing prose observation called "The Method School of Record Jacket Writing." Also in that issue was Bennett Lerner's "Exercises in Alliteration," a sharp contrast between the two seasons of winter and summer.

The frontispiece contained a fitting dedication to the late Mr. P. G. Downes.

The spring issue of the Sextant provided amusement in three clever pieces, "Omnes Gallia in Quo Vadis," "Automaton's Amour," and "Leavitty," by Robert Egan '62, Robert Kargman '6o, and Richard Leavitt '61, respectively. A haunting story of gloominess and death was Robert Downes' "Merry Christmas, Mr. Smith." "Of Death," a poem by William Claflin '61, demonstrated the

heavy impact of a few well-chosen and wellordered words.

The graduation issue displayed a new cover and a Letter from Lenno, Italy, by Mr. Charles Jenney, who was spending his sabbatical in Europe.

In this issue, Editor-in-Chief Samuel C. Brown spoke out firmly on the question of morning chapel services, blaming both student apathy and the doctrinaire quality of selections and interpretations. "Mushroom Microcosm," an allegory by Lewis Goodman '6o, paralleled the tension of our atomic race with Russia, and offered an unpleasant outcome.

On Prize Day the George von L. Meyer Memorial Sextant Prose Prize was awarded to Arthur Norton '6o for his short story, "Milton." The Dwight L. MacAfee Memorial Poetry Prize was awarded to Frank B. Purcell for his interesting verses, "On Summer Reading" and "The English Age." This year's Art Board consisted of Donald Hurley '6o, Christopher Wadsworth '6o, Steven Weller '6o, and Anthony Belluschi '61. Associate editors were Robert Kargman '6o, Robert Nicholson '6o, Arthur Norton '6o, Nils Wessell '6o, Kenneth Annis '61, William Claflin '61, Robert Elwell '61, Richard Leavitt '61, Frank Purcell '61, Tison Street '61, James Cole '62, Robert Egan '62, and Peter Shaw '63. The staff of Volume XXXVII chose Frank B. Purcell '61 to head next year's Sextant board.

Dramatic Club Under the direction of Mr. Albert R. Gurney, the Dramatic Club this year presented, as its annual December production, Stalag 17, the famous play about American P.O.W.'s in World War II, written by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trycinki.

The play, one of the club's most successful in recent years, starred club president Samuel C. Brown, Jr. as Sefton and vice-president Richard Dixon as Price.

The play itself centers around a group of American GI's in a German stalag, or prison camp, who, in their attempts to evade prison regulations, are constantly stymied by a German spy posing as one of them. The action commences when two more GI's are captured and brought into the camp.

They reveal to the barracks-members that one of the two, Dunbar, had set fire to a German train before they arrived. The spy (Price) naturally informs the Germans, and the accused GI is removed for a trial. It is only the presence of the Geneva Man,a representative of the Internation-

al Conference in Switzerland, which prevents the GI from suffering immediate consequences. In the most wonderfully funny scene in the entire comedy-melodrama, the prisoners feed the German guard a powerful laxative, and during the guard's forced withdrawal, the accused GI is hidden in the camp latrine. Previously, the most hated American in the barracks, Albert Sefton, had discovered the identity of the spy; and after the hiding of Dunbar, when it becomes necessary to get Dunbar out of the camp, Sefton exposes Price in a series of malicious and dramatic moves.

Price is thrown out of the barracks as a decoy for enemy fire, while Sefton and Dunbar escape from the camp, and the men left in the barracks undergo a profound change of heart in respect to Sefton.

The supporting roles were all equally challenging. Lewis S. Goodman handled the part of Harry, the barracks clown, while William H. Claflin portrayed his side-kick, Stosh. Thomas H. Lee was

ence it has had in years, and a sufficient budget as well. Secondly, a new lighting control panel was donated to the school by Mr. Leo J. Cass, father of stage manager Leo M. Cass. Later in the year, the club voted to do away with the office of vice-president, as it seemed to be a non-functional post. And finally, the club had everything set for a spring production, including original scripts by Mr. Gurney, but was unable to produce it due to an unexpected shortage of actors.

The fate of next year's club is at the moment uncertain. Despite the fine leadership that is bound to be provided by the newly-elected officers—president Dick Dixon, business manager Tim Claffin, and stage manager Leo Cass—a sizable gap will be left as Mr. Gurney takes a new job teaching at M.I.T. His skill, personality, and vigor as director of the club has been much appreciated and will be sorely missed.

the effective barracks leader, Hoffy. The Germans, Jonathan W. White, Paul F. Pietz, and Thomas L. Clark, exceeded expectations in their performances. Bennet L. Lerner and Robert R. D. Nickels were perfectly cast as the Geneva Man and Marko, the stalag's messenger, respectively.

Myles R. Denny-Brown was a fine Dunbar. Filling up the remaining spots in the cast were Glen W. Merry, Robert G. Egan, William M. MacDonald, Charles H. Karelis, Donald B. Robinson, Jerry D. Russman, and Rodman A. Furnald. Leo Cass' veteran stage crew handled the technical aspects of the performance to perfection.

This year's club made a number of innovations.

First of all, in order to assure a fixed, working budget, the club sent out two tickets to each pair of parents, billed the parents, and wrote that if they did not wish to attend they could return the tickets. As a result, the club had the largest audi-

Science Club Under the direction of Steven Weller '6o, this year's Science Club introduced several innovations. Active participation was the keynote of club activities, as the organization promoted plentiful outside work in each individual's scientific field of interest.

The lax admission policy of former years was terminated: each boy had to either write a paper, present a speech, or construct a project for the Science Fair. All those working on a project had to submit an outline by Christmas vacation, and periodic reports every other week. In the speeches presented to the club, topics such as kidney transplants, the formation of ice crystals, and the structure of blood were discussed.

On Friday, March 18, the club's annual Science Fair was held in the Chemistry and Physics rooms in Howe Building. First prize was awarded to Leo Cass '61 and Richard Dixon '61, who showed the various physical effects of the thyroid gland on rats. Jim Hennings '61 won second prize with his project on the electromotive series. Exhibits of an induction coil, a "ham" radio station, a model iron lung, and a model of the molecular structure of a crystal were also presented. scientific interests, two new clubs were formed as branches of the Science Club itself. A Photography Club, under Lewis Moorehouse '61, was organized for those who wished to acquire a knowledge of photography. The club members used the facilities in the Hobby House to develop and print pictures for the Yearbook, the Panel, and the Sextant.

In addition, a Radio Club was formed under the direction of Jeff Dorsey '61. The club was concerned primarily with "ham" radio operations, its purpose being the acquisition of amateur radio licenses. Members of the club included Andrew B. Cornwall '61, Ted Bush '62, Trevor Higonnet '61, William Silk '6o, and Richard Leavitt '61.

In addition to President Weller, the officers of the club included Dixon as vice-president and Cass as secretary. Those holding top positions in next year's club are Cass as president, Jeff Dorsey '61 as vice-president, and Randy Nott '61 as secretary.

Lyceum Continuing to increase in size and activity, the Lyceum had another successful year. Led by President Geoffrey S. Parker '61, Vice-president Robert B. Nicholson '6o, and Secretary William C. Duncan '6o, and directed by Mr. Roger F. Duncan, the club won three of its five debates and sponsored three outside speakers.

Belmont Hill lost its first debate, January 15, to Browne and Nichols. The Lyceum argued the negative of "Resolved: that the Federal Government should help support private educational institutions with direct grants." Debating for Belmont Hill were Donald M. Hurley '6o, who won the award for the best speaker of the debate, Gregory M. Rochlin '61, and Antonio Gilman '61.

On January 29 the Lyceum again faced Browne and Nichols on the same resolution with Belmont Hill taking the affirmative. Parker, Duncan, and Richard H. Dixon '61 were declared the winners on a unanimous decision of the judges.

Another home-and-home debate followed with Governor Dummer, on the subject, "Resolved: that the Southern States were justified in seceding from the Union in 186o-186i." On February 7, Dixon and Bradford N. Lewis '61, upholding the negative, journeyed to South Byfield to win their debate in a close decision. In the second 76

son argued the negative; they contended that best policies are those which cannot be improved upon, and that Castro's policies do not fulfill this requirement. Belmont Hill was adjudged the winner after a hotly-disputed debate, and Nicholson was designated the best speaker.

The Lyceum carried on the policy of having as many as possible participate in debates. Next year eight of the eleven experienced debaters will be returning, and the club's future appears bright.

The outside speakers helped to make the Lyceum's overall program a more interesting one.

Addressing both the Fifth Form, which was reading Moby Dick, and the Lyceum, Mr. Edward B. Watson, of the Mystic Historical Association (Mystic, Connecticut), lectured on whaling. His talk was accompanied by slides of whaling ships and their equipment. William E. Bailey '58, a former Lyceum president and now a student at Harvard, pointed out some of the problems which college freshmen are likely to encounter.

In March the Lyceum sponsored the Annual Public Speaking Contest, won by Robert Nicholson '6o, who spoke on "Two Chinas: A Diplomatic Problem." Very stiff competition in both the preliminaries and the finals made the contest a success. Other finalists were Donald Hurley '6o and Lewis S. Goodman '6o.

The Lyceum conclUded its activities March 23 with the Annual Banquet. Following dinner in the Field House, there were speeches by Geoffrey Parker '61, continuing as President, and Rodman A. Furnald '63, President of the Forum, followed by an intramural debate. After the debate, Mr. Donald J. Hurley, a senior partner of the law firm of Goodwin, Proctor, and Hoar,spoke on the Massachusetts Pardon and Parole Investigations, in which he had taken an active part. Also at this meeting, Antonio Gilman '61 and Robert C. Duncan '61 were elected vice-president and secretary, respectively, for next year.

Cum Laude Each year, a small number of Fifth and Sixth Formers are elected to the National Cum Laude Society by the faculty, in recognition of their scholastic excellence. Last year, Robert Moses Kargman, Robert Baker Nicholson, John Paton Welch, Steven Weller, and Nills Hartley Wessell were chosen from the class of 1960. This year, John Cotton Allis, John Graham Brooks III, Lewis Seth Goodman, and Morise Gregg Robinson were elected from the class of 1960. In addition, Steven Wentworth Carr, Antonio Gilman, Frank Busser Purcell, Curry Tison Street and Ronald Glenn Woodbury were chosen from the class of 1961.

Equivalent to the colleges' -4i Beta Kappa, the Society was founded in 19oo and called the Alpha Delta Tau Fraternity, dedicated to the encouragement of high ideals of work in secondary schools. Election to the Society constitutes a recognition of distinguished scholastic excellence at the preparatory level. A scroll and key are presented to those attaining membership. Belmont Hill has maintained a chapter of the Society since 1928.

Each year, the Cum Laude Society holds a meeting at which there is a discussion of some subject of scholarly interest.

Glee Club Participating in three concerts, the Belmont Hill Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Frank C. Taylor, consisted of thirty members this year, the largest number since Mr. Taylor came to the school in 1957.

The first concert, which took place here on December 4, was a joint program of singing with Browne and Nichols and the House in the Pines School of Nortor Mass. After several songs by .ons by House in the Pines, the the boys and se three choral groups joined for the final number, "Hallelujah Amen," by Handel. This concert, which was preceded by a dinner at school, was followed by dancing in the Common Room.

On the thirtieth of April, the Glee Club held a second concert, this time with Brimmer and May. Again the groups sang separately and then combined for the final selection, "Alleluiah," by Randall Thompson.

In the last performance of the year, The Glee Club participated in a concert at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The group joined Browne and Nichols and Buckingham to present the "Spring" and "Summer" selections of Haydn's oratorio "The Seasons." The combined choruses were conducted by Mrs. Lorna Cooke de Varon, Director of the Chorus of the New England Conservatory of Music. To accompany the singers, a small chamber orchestra, of which C. Tison Street '61 was the concert-master, was organized. This last performance, certainly the highlight of the year for the Glee Club, took the place

of the Graduation Concert, which was cancelled to prevent an overcrowding of events during Commencement Week.

Due to many conflicts in extra-curricular schedules, especially during the winter term, the Glee Club suffered from a marked lack of practice time.

On top of this, there seemed to be a feeling of apathy on the part of the student body, which resulted in poor attendance at concerts and, in turn, a lowering of morale in the club. Unfortunately, Mr. Taylor will not be with the school next year. His great musical abilities and untiring patience served as an inspiration and stimulus to the members of the Club. Chris Scott will be the president of next year's group, while David Burke and Peter Rowan will serve as librarians, replacing Tom Thayer, Mike Morgan, and David Hill respectively.

Dance Committee This year the school presented four dances, highlighted by the Senior Prom in June. Ned Blackwood headed the Dance Committee, which included Jack Cranney, Don Hurley, Tom Thayer, Scott Cushman, Arthur Norton, Tom DiMare, Mike Morgan, Dave Mechem, Chad Mitchell, and Alex Varkas.

A large turnout was present at the annual Fall Dance on the night of the final sports contests of the season, against Governor Dummer. Photographed heads of the Football and Soccer lettermen atop caricatured bodies were placed on the walls of the Common Room, while colored lighting added to the atmosphere. For refreshments, there were doughnuts and cider. Art Norton and Mike Morgan provided intermission entertainment by playing rock and roll on the piano.

The Winter Dance, held on the night of the final regular-season games, was also held in the Common Room. The turnout was smaller and less lively than that at the Fall Dance, yet the entertainment given by the "Cupids" at intermission was, to say the least, exciting.

The Fifth Form gave an excellent dance in the final week of April in honor of the Senior Class.

This time the gym was used as the dance floor; crepe paper covered the walls and hung from the ceiling, while the entrance from the Common Room was illuminated with blue lighting. Pete Rowan and Bob Emory, from Browne and Nichols, provided intermission entertainment by playing various folk-songs on their guitars.

The Prom, held on June To, was a complete success, as was evidenced by the large, enthusiastic turn-out. Ken Reeves provided the music, while the CYO band, from St. Joseph's Church in Belmont, played various rock and roll hits at intermission time. Masses of crepe paper covered the gym wall, while blue spotlights shone from the top of the stage and from the back wall. The refreshments of punch and cookies helped make the dance a most fitting conclusion to a successful series of dances.

Chess Club Hill's only loss. Higonnet checkmated his opponent on number three board, while the remaining three players, Gilman, White, and Downes, all worked out of tight positions to beat their opponents.

Thus, Belmont Hill's chess team will carry an unblemished record into the 1961 season. With White, Higonnet, Carr, Gilman, and Claflin returning, the coming season promises to be as rewarding as the two preceding ones.

Extending its two-year winning streak to seven, the chess team won all four of its matches in 1960.

Last year's team, Belmont Hill's first, played three matches and won them all.

On Saturday, January 16, Belmont Hill bested Middlesex, 11/4_134. Robert Turran '6o lost to Bill Weld, the president of the Middlesex team.

Trevor Higonnet '61 played his opponent to a draw, while Johnathan White '62, Antonio Gilman '61 and president William Claflin '61 won their matches.

On Sunday, March 6, Belmont Hill edged Brooks School at North Andover, 3-2. Gilman, playing in the number three position, quickly defeated his opponent, but Belmont Hill then fell behind as the number one man, Stephen Carr '61, and the number five man, Robert Downes '6o, were checkmated. However, White rallied to win on number two board, and Higonnet won the decisive match to give Belmont Hill the victory.

On the following Sunday the team defeated Groton at Belmont Hill, 4-1. Turran, in number one position, suffered the only loss for Belmont Hill. Gilman won handily, while Downes, Higonnet and Carr all won close matches.

Finally, on Sunday, March 20, Belmont Hill toppled Roxbury Latin in the Common Room by a score of 4-1. Again, Turran suffered Belmont

Our whole social structure demands leadership by a few and a willingness to follow of a larger group. This "followship" is not a meek and submissive obedience, but rather a dynamic and questioning compliancy.

11 democratic way of life, then, necessitates the development of leaders and the training of subjects to follow. Few better environments than games can be found for developing these two qualities.

The democratic ideal of the recognition of true worth is well exemplified in games. The best players make the team, regardless of their niche in society. While it is true that athletic prowess sometimes seems to be the sole criterion for judging an individual's leadership ability, in most instances the leader is chosen on the basis of his whole personality and character as well as his athletic ability.

It is apparent that there are definite values other than the development of a healthy physique that may be derived from games. The extent to which these values may be realized depends upon the way in which these activities are conducted and the extent of participation.

Football A record of 3 wins and 4 losses does not do justice to the spirited efforts of the 1959 Varsity Football team. Playing its first season under Mr. John Fisher, the local eleven had only two lettermen and seven squad-members held over from 1958. In addition, Coach Fisher and his staff introduced an entirely new offensive pattern, which required a great deal of adjustment on the part of the players. Thus, the season started on an uncertain note, but the three consecutive victories which terminated the campaign were proof of spirit and ability.

Bert Williams' fifty-eight yard scoring dash for Milton in the last twenty seconds of play spoiled Coach Fisher's Varsity debut, as the Orange and Blue edged Belmont, 2o-I4. Behind 6-o in the second period, the Hillies retaliated to knot the score on a pass from Bob Kargman to Toby Kimball. A blocked punt, coupled with a fumble, handed Milton its second tally and a 14-6 lead.

Once again, a Kargman to Kimball toss yielded a clutch touchdown and Kargman tied the score at 14-14 on a run around end. Minutes later, an intercepted pass set the stage for Williams' electrifying jaunt. A disappointing feature of the Milton game was Belmont's inability to move successfully along the ground.

never relinquished. A heavy Dedham line overpowered the smaller Hillie unit, while Treadwell, Dick Reiber, and Mike Poor racked up impressive yardage. In the third period Kargman raced 47 yards around end, and Ty Peabody cracked across for the extra points to account for all Belmont scoring. Once again, errors of commission and omission on the part of the offensive and defensive units were heavy factors in the defeat.

Belmont Hill's continuing mistakes provided a strong St. Mark's eleven with all the opportunities it needed, as the Fishermen were again defeated, 28-14. With the first period only seconds old, Ty Peabody fumbled on the Belmont 23. A fine effort by the Varsity defense prevented an immediate touchdown, but a wobbly Hillie punt put the Marksmen into scoring position once more.

This time the opposition was not to be denied, and by the end of the second period they had scored twice more. In the final stages of the second quarter, Belmont Hill unlimbered its passing arm and moved 72 yards in three plays, with Kargman scoring from the six and Peabody rushing for the extra points. With the margin at 28-6, Kargman rambled 16 yards around end for the final tally of the day.

Hillies before a partisan Groton Homecoming crowd. Bingham tallied four times to lead an early onslaught which was never successrully halted.

Kargman was the Hill's offensive star, as he notched three touchdowns for his afternoon's effort. Fullback Bill Emerson tallied To points on a touchdown and 4 extra points.

The Varsity eleven,led by the stellar play of the defensive unit, scored in every period and completely dominated play in a 21-12 victory over Browne and Nichols. In the first period, the Fishermen moved 57 yards in six plays, Peabody scoring from the eleven. In the second stanza, Doug Hall recovered a Knight fumble to set up Kargman's 25-yard scoring ramble. Peabody passed to Kimball for the extras. With the score 14-6, Kargman raced 72 yards to add an insurance tally, and Peabody salted away the victory with his 56-yard scoring run in the final quarter.

The Varsity football team generated a brilliant fourth quarter scoring drive and completely stifled Middlesex's final efforts in winning a close decision, 20-14. Middlesex ground out 57 yards on 13 plays to score the opening touchdown, but the fired-up Hillies took advantage of a roughingthe-kicker penalty to drive 61 yards, Kargman scoring from the eleven. Middlesex quickly scored again, but Kargman and Peabody combined to knot the score, 14-14, at the half. After a scoreless third period, in which an early Middlesex thrust was stymied, Peabody scored the winning tally from the t. The defense then dug in and pushed the opposition back II yards to protect the victory.

The Robert Saterlee Hurlburt Football Medal— given to the boy who made the greatest improvement in football—was awarded to William Emerson. bench to lead the Varsity football team to an inspired 34-0 triumph over Governor Dummer. A punt blocked by Captain Ned Blackwood set up an early tally by the team's high scorer, Bob Kargman. Annis then flipped a pass to Kimball for the extra points. The next time the Fishermen got the ball, Annis spearheaded a 53-yard march and culminated his efforts by cracking across from five yards out. After the Governors fumbled in the second period, Fremont-Smith took a hand-off from Emerson and raced over tackle to score on the first play from scrimmage. Annis added two more points on a quick plunge over center. Two minutes later, another opposition fumble set up Chad Mitchell's touchdown jaunt, and Kargman added the clincher in period three.

By the end of the season, it was clear that the Varsity was now forcing the opposition to make mistakes that the Fishermen had once made. True, Governor Dummer was not a polished opponent, but to ignore the progress which the local eleven had made would be a mistake. The fast-charging defensive line was no illusion, and the powerful offense had to be respected by all corners.

Soccer With firm expectations of a third consecutive record-breaking season, the Belmont Hill soccer team embarked upon what proved to be the worst campaign statistically in Coach Frederick B. Preston's three year tenure. The Varsity booters managed a dismal record of three wins, six losses, and two ties. In addition, they were able to sal-

vage only one triumph in seven Private School League outings, while team scoring slumped to a mere sixteen goals in eleven contests.

Unlike their football counterparts, the "Huskies" faced the young season with an abundance of experience in the form of nine returning lettermen. Moreover, several capable J.V. aspirants showed promise of ousting the incumbents at a number of positions. "I'm sure we have the material," commented Mr. Preston, "but now we have to find the combination."

This combination eluded Coach Preston's efforts throughout the entire season. While spirit and teamwork were occasionally excellent, the absence of a true "star" and lack of height in the line plagued The Hilltoppers in game after game.

Moreover, there was a deluge of injuries.

In the early practice sessions, it looked as if concerted team effort might overcome the local booters' deficiencies. However, the opening game, a 3-3 tie against Milton, belied this theory. Holding a vast edge in territorial play, The Varsity battled to a 2-i lead on goals by Ron Woodbury and Bob Russo in the fourth period. However, after Russo's solid tally, the team slackened and allowed the tall Orange and Blue to score the ty-

ing goal. In overtime, Brad Dewey put the swift Huskies back into the lead, but once more the Varsity let up, and the game ended in a deadlock.

The second contest, in which Belmont Hill vanquished Lawrence Academy 3-0, was disappointing nevertheless. Over-all play was by no means outstanding, and the goals were few in comparison with the number of fruitless scoring drives.

Wink Willett, Naaman Mahlowitz, and Captain Arthur Norton booted home the local representatives' markers. The team's inability to convert more opportunities in this game foreshadowed rough sledding against top-flight competition.

The Tabor match was perhaps the nadir of the entire season. Although once more controlling play, the soccer team was held scoreless while its opportunist opponents pumped in three sharp tallies. The play was poor; the injuries were mounting; the spirit was lacking.

Coach Preston and his players met the next game with a new style of play and renewed vitality. Lack of height being the major problem, the Huskies attempted to keep the ball on the ground with short, accurate kicks, to take advantage of superior speed, passing, and playmaking. Groton found this combination quite hard to handle, and Belmont's defense proved impregnable, as goalie Steve Hood registered his second shut-out victory on Russo's tally, the lone score of the game.

Despite the improvement in spirit, the Hillies proceeded to lose four consecutive contests. St. Mark's, in a game that was closer than statistics can indicate, overpowered Belmont Hill, s-I. Only Dewey could find the scoring range in this

contest, as the visitors tallied in all four periods.

Still, the success of the new offense against one of New England's best teams was reason for some optimism.

Mr.Preston made several line-up changes before the game with Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, but the net result was a 3-1 loss to a very

strong team. Norton tallied his second goal of the season, on a penalty kick, for the Varsity's only score.

A mud-soaked group of Huskies lost their third consecutive game to Medford High on October 24. Once again, Arthur Norton provided the only source of offensive power, again on penalty kicks.

He scored Belmont Hill's two goals in the second period to tie the game. Medford scored immediately afterwards and played tight defensive ball to squelch all Varsity efforts.

Browne and Nichols administered the next Belmont Hill defeat by soundly trouncing the local booters, 2-o. The team's entire level of play was at a very low ebb, and it got off only two

threatening shots in the entire game.

The drought ended on November 14 with a smashing 4-0 triumph over Noble and Greenough.

Hank Amon passed to Wink Willett for the first tally early in the game, while Norton also scored in the first period on a long blast. Amon scored on a neat shot in the third period, and Russo gathered in a pass from Dewey to ice the verdict.

Jubilation was short-lived, however, as Brooks racked up a 3-0 win over the Hilltoppers on November 18. The team appeared to be far more concerned with the game to follow than with the game at hand (more accurately, at foot), and so Brooks won an easy victory.

leaders, the Varsity tied Governor Dummer in double overtime. Art Norton put the local representatives into a one-goal lead, but the Governors' Buckingham netted an almost impossible tally to knot the score. Steve Hood and Naaman Mahlowitz were outstanding in defensive roles for Belmont Hill.

The season must be termed unsuccessful in view of all the potential. Had the team, throughout the year, displayed the kind of spirit and play which brought them their deadlock with Governor Dummer, this would have been a different story.

Letters were awarded to: Captain Norton, Allis, C. Amon, B. Dewey, R. Downes, Hill, Hood, Hurd, MacMahon, Mahlowitz, Russo, Captain-elect Scott, J. Welch, Willett, Woodbury, and Managers D. Basketball In a sport which rarely produces an undefeated team, Belmont Hill's Varsity Basketball squad has been performing miracles for two straight seasons. Unbeaten in the last thirty-nine contests, the local hoopsters successfully defended both their Private School League and New England Class B Prep School titles while running up the state's longest winning streak.

Belmont Hill's frontcourt was headquarters for prep school basketball's most powerful rebounding duo, 6'4" captain Ned Blackwood and 6'7" captain-elect Toby Kimball, both of whom were renowned for their ability to pull down every loose ball in sight and to break up rallies with their brilliant defensive tactics. Blackwood, a forward, was deadly on quick jump-shots from the top of the keyhole and on short hooks close to the bucket; Kimball, playing center, hit from almost every conceivable angle. Ron Woodbury, at the other forward slot, contributed a dependable outside shot to an already potent attack, while guard Ken Annis, with his scrapping, driving, and jumpshooting,kept the opposition's defenses constantly off-balance. Hank Amon, a very fine shooter in his own right, demonstrated prowess as the team ,`quarterback," whose passes deftly exploited weaknesses in defensive alignments. Finally, Steve Carr, a versatile performer who could play every position on the court, gave Coach William

E. Croke the flexibility and reserve strength which any championship team requires. These boys played the leading roles in a championship cast.

Not to be forgotten in the rush for headlines, however, were the "Rinky-Dinks," a muchpublicized group of reserves. Known more for hustle and speed than for refinement, the "Rinkies," on a number of occasions, were able to upset an opponent's offensive patterns with unorthodox tactics. Though lacking in Varsity experience, these six players—led by a study in

perpetual motion, Bob Russo—afforded many colorful minutes of basketball while the starting quintet was enjoying a breather.

Opening the season on January 6 at Belmont Hill, the Crokemen swamped Rivers, 89-30. The starting five, playing only twenty minutes, jumped to a phenomenal 57-5 halftime edge, as Blackwood dunked in 26 points, and Kimball added 20.

Milton failed to stop a first quarter surge which vaulted the Varsity to a sixteen point lead. The Orange and Blue men were unable to stop Kimball, who tallied 23, as the Hillies prevailed, 59-30.

Once again the local quintet jumped to an almost insurmountable margin in the early minutes of play, 21-3, and went on to defeat Noble and Greenough, 72-36, at Belmont. The Hilltoppers gunned in 32 field goals to Nobles' 12, as Kimball again garnered 23 points.

In the toughest game of the early season, against St. Mark's, Belmont Hill fell behind for the first time in the campaign; but Kimball and Amon, the game's leading scorers with 17 and 14 points respectively, engineered a come-frombehind barrage in the 49-33 victory.

Opening up a crushing 53-17 halftime lead, the Crokemen swamped Middlesex, 82-50, behind the scoring of Blackwood and Kimball. Belmont's height and speed resulted in an effective fastbreak which Middlesex found impossible to stop.

The next encounter found Blackwood and Co. pitted against League runner-up Governor Dummer at South Byfield. With the score tied at 25 points apiece after two periods, Kimball shook loose from a concentrated defense for several crucial buckets in the 54-43 triumph.

fensively outstanding Groton five by 10 points, 73-63, behind Kimball's 27 points. Leading by only five points after one stanza, Belmont Hill exploded to a 36-19 margin at the midway point.

Once again, an early scoring binge carried Belmont's undefeated five to an easy win, this time against St. Sebastian's. Unable to recover from an early 15 point deficit, the opposition fell before the 48 point barrage of Blackwood('9), Annis

In one of the season's most exciting encounters, the Varsity outlasted a classy Brooks quintet, 63-50. The North Andover five held the Crokemen to a 45-41 edge at the three-quarter mark, but the Hillies exploded with 18 points in the fourth stanza to put the game on ice.

Browne and Nichols, utilizing a very slow, deliberate offense, tried to stall its way to victory, but once more the Crokemen's superior height prevailed. Leading by only three points, 9-6, after one period, Belmont turned to aggressive defensive play, which wreaked havoc with the Knights' accustomed patterns. From there on, it was easy sledding to a 54-36 win.

smashed St. George's, 58-35. Toby Kimball led the parade with 18 points.

Noble and Greenough, in a second crack at the Varsity, failed again. Twelve points by Kimball and ii by Woodbury contributed to a 33 point margin after one half, as Nobles netted only two buckets. The second half saw the Noblemen briefly surge back against the "Rinkies," but the Hillies then reeled off nine consecutive points to pull far out of reach. The final count was 77-42.

Jumping to an early 22-3 lead, the Crokemen submerged St. Paul's, 58-35. Kimball's 18 points led the shooters, while Woodbury and Blackwood both netted 13.

A strong Alumni squad fell, 90-79, and St. Mark's was also victimized, 68-52. In the latter contest, a second-period surge during which the Varsity scored 24 points to their opponents' nine decided the issue. Twenty-six points by Kimball paced the victory.

Rolling up the highest point total of the year, Belmont smothered Brooks,93-26, as everyone on the squad scored at least one point. The thirtynine field goals in this game was a season high.

The Varsity next outhustled the League all-stars, 59-44.

A brilliant all-around performance by 6'7" Toby Kimball sparked the Varsity basketball team to a decisive 54-36 victory over Thayer Academy in the semi-final round of the New England Preparatory School Basketball Tournament.

Thayer shocked the local quintet by jumping to an almost instantaneous four-point margin, but the defending champion Hilltoppers soon surged back into command. Utilizing a definite edge in height

to advantage, the Crokemen quickly moved into a 2o-8 lead at the quarter mark, 17 of these points being scored by Kimball and Captain Ned Blackwood. The half-time score was 30-14.

Unable to score with any consistency, the Thayer quintet concentrated on a tighter defense for the second half. However, Ken Annis and Hank Amon found the range and took advantage of the added pressure on Kimball and Blackwood.

Although center Art Nelson began to hit with consistency for the visitors, the Hilltoppers' lead was too much to surmount in the final minutes.

Having fallen behind in the third period, the Varsity, Kimball having returned, surged back in front by three points in the fourth quarter. The superlative defensive play of the entire quintet stymied many of Hopkins' final, dramatic efforts.

Annis led the scoring with 22 points, while Blackwood dunked in 19.

The Basketball Trophy for the greatest contribution to this sport was awarded to Toby Kimball. Letters were awarded to Captain Blackwood, C. Amon, Annis, Carr, Feinberg, Captainelect Kimball, Russo, Turran, Woodbury, and Manager Stonberg.

Class B Prep School Championship, 52-5o.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this, the Crokemen's thirty-ninth straight victory, was the fact that the Varsity played almost fifteen minutes without the services of center Toby Kimball, who encountered foul-trouble late in the second period.

The Hilltoppers fought back from an early deficit to gain a 12-8 margin after one period. In the second stanza, only Annis's magnificent sharpshooting display maintained the Crokemen's four-point lead, 29-25, as the visitors took advantage of Kimball's departure to play evenly with Belmont.

Hockey The 1960 Varsity Hockey season was a campaign of superb victories and disappointing defeats. The Hilltoppers made a poor showing in crucial league competition but displayed finesse and scoring-punch against several non-league powerhouses. The squad lacked a "super star," but it demonstrated consistent team play in attaining a creditable record of 12 wins,6 losses, and tie—mediocre only by Belmont Hill standards.

Failing to duplicate their dramatic performance of the 1959 season, the Varsity fared poorly at the annual Lawrenceville Tournament, losing two out of three games. But despite the seventhplace finish, the team fought out three very close contests. Lawrenceville upset Belmont, seeded second in the tournament, by a score of 2-1. The Larries grabbed the lead in the first period, but Bob Kargman poked the puck home a few minutes later. Lawrenceville, after tallying late in the final period, held off a Belmont power play to cinch the verdict. Nichols School, of Buffalo, New York, handed the team its second loss, 2-I. Tom Warren scored the only goal for Belmont on a 6o-foot bouncer. Wade Welch put on a fine display of goal tending, but to no avail. The Hilltoppers salvaged seventh place by overcoming a

weak Choate squad, 2-I. Alex Varkas scored on a long shot in the first period, and after Choate knotted the count, the tie prevailed through a ten-minute overtime. Each side was then permitted a one-man break from the blue-line, and Tommy Warren converted for Belmont while the Choate attempt failed.

Belmont's luck changed on returning home, as they won three games in a row on home ice. Favored St. Sebastian's fell 4-0, as Mechem, Kargman, and Welch provided the firepower. Captain Mechem scored the first goal, after which Bob Kargman tallied twice on close-in shots. Welch poked in his own rebound in the final minutes. A weak Rivers team fell 5-0 on a blustery Saturday.

Elliot Harrington and John Welch scored in the first period, while Mechem scored on a three-ontwo breakaway. In the final period Ty Peabody and Art Norton snapped in their first goals of the season. Perhaps the highlight of the season came on January 13, when Belmont beat Andover 1-0, the first victory over this perennial powerhouse in many years. Alex Varkas' tally in the first period was preserved by an excellent defensive showing, highlighted by the 33 stops made by Goalie Wade Welch. The Varsity then suffered its first defeat in five games, losing to a very strong Deerfield sextet, 5-2. Deerfield's Canadian star, Kinasewich, scored the three-goal hat trick. After Deerfield grabbed a two-goal first period lead, defenseman Varkas tallied at o:58 of the second period on a thirty-foot screen shot. Elliot Harrington brought the score to 3-2 in the final period and Bob Kargman and John Welch were foiled successively in front of the Deerfield net. In the final minutes Deerfield pumped in two goals.

Belmont Hill, paced by Tom Warren's two goals, defeated Groton 3-2. Groton got the jump in the first period, when Bill Oates scored the first of his two goals. Dave Mechem evened the count later in the first period, setting the stage for Warren's tallies.

Although Belmont outshot Milton 27-16, the latter came out on top by the score of 5-2 in the first league test of the season. The Hilltoppers grabbed a two-goal lead in the first ten minutes,

as first-liners Bob Kargman and John Welch scored. However, Milton awakened and tied the game midway through the second period. Belmont's poor defensive play opened the way for Milton's three goals in the final five minutes.

Tom DiMare, replacing regular goalie Wade Welch, put on a deft display of goaltending as Belmont overcame powerful Belmont High, 3-2.

The first two periods were scoreless, but the Belmont High captain, Morrill, scored in the final period, followed by Varkas and Warren for Belmont Hill. Morrill then scored again, but in an overtime period, Bob Kargman shoved home the winner.

In a very exciting game, Exeter was tied 3-3 in overtime. Both goalies had 35 saves, several of them on the spectacular side. Exeter scored early in the first period, and John Welch followed with Belmont's first goal. Kargman scored a goal in each of the final periods, sending the game into the scoreless overtime. Welch and Kargman each had three points.

Posting its fourth shut-out, the Varsity defeated Brooks School, 4-0. In a sloppy first period, Belmont finally scored on John Welch's short blast. Bob Kargman deflected Welch's shot a few minutes later, while Art Norton deflected Alex Varkas' blue-line blazer at the end of the period.

Warren's third-period tally closed out the scoring.

Belmont made a valiant attempt to upset League champion St. Mark's, but lost 3-2 in overtime. St. Mark's scored twice before Ty Peabody counted for Belmont, four minutes from the end of the game. A St. Mark's penalty led to Belmont's tying goal, which John Welch scored on a long shot from the blue-line that eluded the St.

A surprisingly strong Nobles and Greenough sextet triumphed over Belmont, 3-I. In the first period, Nobles scored twice, first on a long shot by a defenseman, then on a short flip by center Treadwell. In the third period, Elliot Harrington finally scored for Belmont, but Nobles quickly tallied again. The loss was Belmont's fourth in eleven contests.

Hat tricks by Bob Kargman and Captain Mechem and a single goal by Elliot Harrington led Belmont to a 7-0 trouncing of Middlesex.

Goalie Wade Welch was forced to make very few saves in the one-sided contest. John Welch added three assists to the winning cause.

The hockey team surprised everyone by defeating the Alumni, 4-2. The first line did all the scoring as Tom Warren and John Welch each scored once, and Bob Kargman twice. Bill Hogan and Richie Mostrom scored for the Alumni, who missed the services of such players as the Cleary brothers, Bill Beckett, Greg Downes, and Larry Hawkins.

In a penalty-filled contest, Wellesley fell, 6-o.

Bob Kargman and Art Norton scored in the first period, while in the next period Mechem scored twice and Warren and Harrington netted single markers. Goalie Wade Welch had another easy game.

In the final game of the season, Belmont swamped Governor Dummer, 5-1. The second line of Ty Peabody, Elliot Harrington, and Augie Meyer led the scoring. Peabody had two goals, Meyer one, and Harrington three assists. Bob

Kargman and Jon Smith also hit the twining.

The Governor Dummer goal came in the first period, on a close-in shot.

Smart, Jr. Hockey Medal, given to the boy who makes the greatest improvement in the sport. Letters were awarded to Captain Mechem, DiMare, Elwell, Harrington, Kargman, Meyer, Norton, Peabody, Price, Smith, Varkas, Wadsworth, J. Welch, Captain-elect W. Welch, and Manager D. Brooks.

Wrestling This year's wrestling team was unquestionably the strongest Belmont Hill has seen. Sporting a record of eight wins and five losses, the squad shattered most of the school wrestling records.

It was the first wrestling team in the school's history to have a winning season. The squad was the first to have five lettermen with more wins than losses. This was the first team to have four wrestlers of Interscholastic caliber. The list goes on and on.

The grapplers started slowly but then caught fire, winning six out of their last seven matches.

At the midpoint it seemed that the experienced wrestlers discovered the right techniques while at the same time the new wrestlers gained the confidence needed to make them effective.

In the first match of the season, the Jordanmen fell to a perennially strong Milton team, 60-30.

The only Hill victories were won by Don Rutley at 121, Naaman Mahlowitz at 133, and Captain Bill Emerson wrestling at 167. Dave Morrison, John Allis, and Andy Cornwall also contributed points. Four Hillers were pinned.

In the next match the Belmont wrestlers pulled one of the biggest upsets of the season, beating

Needham High 43-41. The victory stands as the team's most exciting and noteworthy victory.

Needham developed into one of the strongest teams in New England, and the triumph put quite a feather in Belmont Hill's cap. The Hill was trailing 39-Ii with only four matches remaining. Then Fremont-Smith, Emerson, Cornwall, and Silk each pinned his man, while allowing Needham a total of only two points, to give Belmont the win.

After the triumph over Needham, which was a tremendous morale booster, the team rolled over Wellesley High, 62-47. Belmont decisions went to Morrison, Mahlowitz, Wile, and Emerson, while Fremont-Smith and Silk both won by pins. Emererson won on default when his opponent's knee slipped out of joint.

At this point the squad met some really tough competition, losing its next match to Noble and Greenough, 43-32. Claflin, Morrison, Mahlowitz, Fremont-Smith, Emerson, and Silk all won their matches, but their efforts were not enough.

The squad next fell victim to Governor Dummer by a score of 57-34. Belmont was only a point behind at the halfway mark, but the Governors were strong in the heavier weights, and the Hill was outscored 22-io in the last five matches.

The Hillmen suffered their fourth loss of the year against Browne and Nichols, 47-33. Only Mahlowitz, Wile, and Emerson were able to win their matches.

At this point the team's fortunes shifted. Aided by three forfeits, Belmont rolled over a weak Rivers squad, 64-24. The Hill won all but two of

the matches, Diamond and Fremont-Smith suffering the only defeats.

Roxbury Latin was the next victim of the rallying squad. Belmont powered its way to five pins and crushed the Latins by a 53-27 count. Claflin, Diamond, Morrison, Mahlowitz, Emerson, Cornwall, and Silk all contributed wins to the total.

Scituate High, the Hill's next opponent, provided the most lopsided contest of the season.

Belmont wrestlers triumphed in every class except 177. Fremont-Smith gained the distinction of pinning his opponent in the shortest time of any wrestler all season, 29 seconds. Diamond, Hill, Morrison, Mahlowitz, and Herron also gained pins.

St. Mark's proved to be the one knot in the Hill's closing win-string as the Marksmen were victorious 56-36. St. Mark's led all the way, and Belmont lost seven out of ten matches. Mahlowitz, Cornwall, and Silk won for the Hill. Although weak in their upper weight-divisions, the Marksmen proved to be strong through the middle, and they compiled a margin which the Belmont heavyweights could not overcome.

The next match, with Brooks, was conducted on a curtailed basis, as Brooks could dress only six wrestlers. Belmont won easily, 35-9.

Belmont downed seven out of ten opponents as they dropped St. George's, 64-33. Claflin, Morrison, Mahlowitz, Emerson, and Silk all pinned their men.

over Lawrence Academy, 47-45. Belmont gained the lead after losing some early matches, but then had difficulty staving off Lawrence's strong final bid.

The most successful wrestler on the team was Naaman Mahlowitz. Naaman, wrestling in the 133 pound class, won twelve matches while losing none. During the season he scored a total of 78 points as opposed to 1 5 scored by his opponents.

Naaman's presence virtually assured the team of a win in his class, and a man who can do this is of inestimable value.

In the Interscholastics Mahlowitz tied the top-seeded wrestler but lost the match on a referee's decision.

Captain Emerson was also a great point-getter this year. Bill pinned eight men and won decisions over two more opponents, while losing but two matches. Emerson was selected for the Interscholastics but was eliminated in the first round of the 167 pound class.

Dave Morrison at 127 and Bill Silk at heavyweight. Both had 8-3 records and both were selected as alternates for the Interscholastics. Bill and Dave could always be counted on to get points for the team.

With four wrestlers whose records were 8-3 or better, the team had a nucleus of fine wrestlers.

Two impressive newcomers, Claflin and Diamond, held the two lightweight positions with records of 7-6 and 3-4 respectively. Additional support came from Cornwall, the captain-elect. Although Andy met some tough competition this year, leaving him at 4-8 for the season, he showed constant improvement and has good potential as next year's leader.

The Wrestling Trophy—to the boy who made the greatest contribution to wrestling in the 1960 season—was awarded to Captain Bill Emerson.

Letters were presented to W. Claflin, Captainelect Cornwall, Diamond, Captain Emerson, P. Fremont-Smith, Hill, Mahlowitz, D. Morrison, W. Silk, Wile.

Off to its best start in several years, the Varsity Baseball team succumbed to the rarified atmosphere of first place and slumped to a disappointing fifth-place finish, with eight wins, five losses, and a tie. The dramatic early season surge culminated in a crucial victory over Private League titan St. Mark's, before a complete reversal of form sent the Crokemen into a disastrous four-game tailspin. Three of these four defeats came at the hands of league contenders, which dashed the team's hopes for championship laurels. It was as if the pressure of the St. Mark's upset had spent the entire squad. In retrospect, it appears that the Hilltoppers were playing above their heads for the first two weeks, but that they were by no means as inept as the team slump would indicate.

Still, it was a colorful, exciting baseball campaign, which showed a good deal of promise for 1961.

The Varsity opened the season by banging out fourteen hits against three Browne and Nichols pitchers to defeat the hapless Black Knights 13-7.

Toby Kimball, Ken Annis, and Ron Woodbury collected nine safeties between them, and directly accounted for all the team's tallies. Captain Jack Cranney went six innings to capture his first victory, although he required help from Naaman Mahlowitz in the final stretch.

The Groton game was a see-saw affair, highlighted by Mills' brilliant relief stint. Mahlowitz pitched a third of an inning and gave up four runs, including two circuit blasts, but Mills came on to strike out eight in three and a third innings. Mean-

while, the Varsity responded by tying the score in the first and moving ahead to stay in the eighth.

Back-to-back triples by Annis and Kimball, and a perfect squeeze play engineered by Dave Price, iced the 12-8 verdict.

On April 2o the Hillies edged Boston Technical 7-6. Starter Hank Amon ran into a first-inning barrage, but Kimball's big bat led a third-inning uprising which vaulted the Crokemen into a 4-3 lead. Boston Tech tied the score in the fifth, but two Belmont runs in the bottom of the fifth were decisive. The Varsity managed only three hits in this game but took advantage of almost every opportunity, as reliever Mahlowitz gained his first victory.

Scoring eighteen runs on fifteen hits, Belmont Hill won its fourth straight at the expense of Rivers. The losers committed eleven errors and unleashed three wild pitches to hand the Crokemen the victory. Annis homered, tripled, and singled to pace the local attack, while Bob Karg_ man chipped in three hits in the vital lead-off role.

In the sixth inning Rivers tallied six times against two pitchers in an effort to catch up, but the Hilltoppers added six of their own in the seventh to forge an 18-7 margin. Cranney, who pitched the first five innings, got credit for his third win.

The fatal slump then set in, as a strong Harvard Freshman "B" team defeated the Hilltoppers 8-2. Bart Francis and John Coburn, former Private League pitchers, combined for a threehitter, with Kargman and Kimball collecting the only Belmont hits.

In their first league loss of the season, the Crokemen were shut out by a strong Milton nine, 9-0. Poor fielding and generally sloppy play allowed Milton to romp to their third league win.

Kimball and Annis accounted for Belmont's three hits, and Cranney took the loss.

Pitcher Cranney was victimized for the second straight time. The Hilltoppers reached Jerry Ellis for unearned runs in the fourth and sixth, but the local nine was unable to bunch any of the other nine hits to good effect. Kimball and Lew Goodman both contributed two safeties, but to no avail.

Noble and Greenough completed the fatal tailspin by pinning an II to 4 defeat on Belmont Hill. Morgan doubled in two runs in the second inning to knot the score, and in the third Kimball belted a two-run homer to move the Hilltoppers into a 4-2 lead. However, Cranney faltered, and Barry Treadwell's heavy hitting moved the Noblemen well out in front. Reliever Jack Roy shut out the Crokemen over the last six and two-thirds innings.

As suddenly as the slump had begun, it ended.

George Beatty pitched a no-hitter for Roxbury Latin but lost, 4-2. Amon started for Belmont and retired eleven men in a row through four innings, while the Varsity scored twice in the third, as Goodman tallied on errors and Kargman stole around the basepaths. An error by the first baseman and errors by the second baseman accounted for the Hillies' final tallies.

Lewis Goodman was given the Coaches' Award for the greatest improvement in baseball.

Crew The opening of the 1960 varsity crew season was characterized by uncertainty. The crew knew that it would have difficulty matching last year's record, yet it felt that its smoothness might, in many cases, make up for its lack of size. The Nobles race, the first of the season, was a heartening beginning for the first boat, which won, and a spur towards improvement for the second and third boats, which did not. The third boat, with Dick Dixon, Eric Bradlee, Pete Worthen, Steve Livingston, and cox Aldie Harrington, came in a full length behind. The second boat, with Dave Hill, Don Hurley, Pete Rowan,Bill Duncan and Alan Kline, unable to keep the stroke high enough, did likewise.

The first boat, with Doug Hall, Bill Emerson, Brad Dewey, Captain Chris Wadsworth and Tim Claflin, rowed an excellent 34-count race and finished a length ahead of the Nobles crew. The Noblemen's fourth boat, beating the Hill by IY4 lengths in 3:16, bested their own third boat by one second.

which appears to be headed for the Olympic games, swept all three races. The local rowers lacked the size and strength to seriously challenge their opponents, and all boats lost by a considerable margin of open water. However, all the boys felt they had rowed the best possible races against a superb aggregation.

The following Wednesday the crew raced with Browne and Nichols and Brooks for the newly-established Ducey Cup. The third boat won its race by a strong length, with Brooks coming in second and Browne and Nichols finishing last. The second boat won its race by open water, again with Brooks second and Browne and Nichols last. The first boat, however, had trouble with Brooks' first boat, which came up fast, and Belmont finished second, losing to Brooks by a length and beating Browne and Nichols by open water. Unfortunately, the scoring system was such that the Brooks School won the cup by one point, by virtue of the first boat victory. Thus, a crew with one first and two seconds beat a crew with two firsts and one second.

The next Saturday, the crew faced the Groton crew on the Nashua River. The third boat got off to a good start, but faltered in the course of the race and was defeated by over a length. The second boat got off to a poor start, and over the first half-mile they fell behind by more than a length.

However, with superior coxing and good coordination, the crew finally settled down and sprinted the last quarter-mile to win by a length. The following Saturday the crew went to the New England Inter-Scholastic Rowing Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. During the previous week Worthen was lost to the third boat on account of a bad back, and Dan Barnard was substituted. In spite of this shake-up, the third boat qualified for the finals in the morning heat, as did the other boats. The preliminary races in the morning were hard ones for all shells. The first boat gained three-quarters of a length in the final sprint to edge St. Mark's for third position and qualification. The second boat lost an early lead, and was outsprinted in the last few strokes to also finish third. The third boat took second behind Exeter. The next race, at St. Mark's, was a very encouraging and rewarding one for the Belmont crew.

The third boat raced very well and won by over a length. The second boat rowed a race similar to that of the third and won by two lengths. The first boat, however, was faced with much tougher competition. Belmont lost the start and trailed slightly. The rest of the race was fought within a margin of half-a-length; first Belmont would be ahead, and then St. Mark's would take the lead.

fully justified. The third boat fought hard, but was unable to beat any of the boats in the final heat, finishing a length behind B & N. The second boat was in the same position until the final sprint, in which it outsprinted Browne and Nichols and Choate to come in fourth, missing third place by three feet. The first boat likewise put up a good fight in the final heat, but it was unable to beat any of the larger crews which faced it. These races were not at all discouraging, for they were not only rowed well, but rowed with a good spirit. It was very encouraging to have three boats qualify for the finals.

Though the crew season had its ups and downs, most observers felt that it was a successful one.

Time trials

The crew did not have an outstanding record, but its achievements reflected hard work and a good competitive spirit. As Coach Duncan put it: "While this year's crew season proved that 'you can't win them all,' it also proved that persistent practice, clean blade work, and determination can win some close ones."

The Philip Stewart Burbank Memorial Crew Trophy, given to the boy who makes the greatest contribution to Crew, went to Alan Kline for his superb job of coxing and his strong desire to make the crew season a successful one.

This year,letters in crew went to Hall,Emerson, B. Dewey, Wadsworth, Claflin, Hill, Hurley, Rowan, W. Duncan, Kline, Dixon, P. Worthen, A. Harrington, E. Harrington, and Patrick. These letters were well-deserved by everyone receiving them, most emphatically including the managers, who, under Gerry Patrick, did a splendid job.

Tennis Because of the loss of 4 lettermen and a lack of experienced replacements, the Varsity tennis team experienced a disappointing season. The squad's record was two wins, one tie and eight losses. In line with the steadily decreasing number of victories since 1956, the team was outscored by its opponents 62-27.

The first match of the season was dropped to Middlesex, 8-1, as lack of practice proved to be a major factor. Jim MacMahon, playing in the fifth singles slot, was the lone victor, winning his match by default when his opponent pulled a back muscle. Wink Willet and Kent Parrot narrowly missed victory in their hard-fought doubles match, but they finally succumbed, 4-6, 5-7.

In the second match a strong Milton team overwhelmed Belmont Hill, 9-o. Wink Willet was the only Hiller to win even one set. Jon Smith and Parrot both came close in singles matches, but the experienced Orange and Blue prevailed in the clutch.

In the third match of the year, only three singles and three doubles fnatches were played at Roxbury Latin. The match resulted in Belmont Hill's only tie of the season, as Captain Tom Warren

and number two man Chris Scott won their singles and Warren and MacMahon won the number one doubles. The scores of these respective matches were 6-1, 6-3; 2-6, 7-5, 6-2; and 6-o, 6-3.

At St. Mark's the next week, a shut-out seemed imminent until Jon Smith and Chris Scott, playing number two doubles, defeated their opponents in a grueling three-set match which lasted well into the evening, 2-6, 6-4,6-4. Captain Tom Warren lost to Train, who had previously defeated the lead player at Milton, in a good match.

After the St. Mark's defeat the team traveled to Newton High to play its fifth match. However, the Newton High team had meanwhile arrived at the Hill, and our team retraced its route only to lose another contest. With the time cut short only seven matches were completed. Scott and Smith, number two doubles, were forced to stop before they had finished. As a result, Belmont lost 734_34, narrowly averting a shutout. Once again Parrot almost won, but Greenberg took a deuce set to squelch the number six player's efforts.

A determined Brooks team handed Belmont Hill its fifth defeat by a 5 -2.34 margin. Tom Warren, playing in the number one spot, made a terrific comeback to win his match against Wheelright in three sets, 2-6, 8-6, 6-o. Parrot, playing number five, defeated Dearborn 6-4, 9-7 with an outstanding performance. Belmont's half point came as Jon Smith's match was halted by a time limit. Both he and his opponent had won one set.

Brooks defeated Belmont Hill in both doubles matches, played under the professional scoring system, by counts of 8-2 and 8-1.

tory. On Fathers and Sons Day, in the first match scheduled to be played at home, Belmont defeated St. Sebastian's, 6-3. Warren, Scott, Smith, Parrot, and Rob Elwell all won their singles matches, and Warren and MacMahon won the number one doubles.

gles competition with the exception of Kent Parrot, who defeated Handlin 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. Warren and MacMahon played number two doubles and split their match,4-6,6-o, to win half a point. The final score was 7-I34 for Governor Dummer.

The Hill team chalked up its second victory of the season when it defeated the Tufts Freshmen by a score of 7 to 2. For the first time all year the first three players, Warren,Scott, and MacMahon, were able to win their respective matches. Kent Parrot also emerged victorious, and Scott and

On Wednesday, May 25, the team played against Belmont High. As the result of another mix-up similar to that with Newton, though Belmont Hill was scheduled to play away, the contest turned into a home match. Warren, MacMahon, and Parrot won their singles by solid margins, and

Scott and Parrot won at number two doubles. As Elwell and Smith were in the middle of their match, the rain began to fall. Their deciding match was postponed for one week. They proceeded to lose, 6-4, 6-4, thus adding yet another to the number of Hill losses.

The final competition of the year provided a victory for Browne and Nichols, 4-I. Only five matches,three singles and two doubles,were played, because B&N has only three courts. MacMahon scored the only Belmont point as he defeated Gruenberg in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Warren was defeated only after a hard three-setter, and Scott also came close to victory. On this disappointing note, the team ended one of the poorest seasons in recent history.

This year's letters were awarded to Captain Warren, number one; Scott, number two; Willett, number three—until illness forced him to withdraw from the team early in the season; MacMahon, number four; Smith, number five; Parrot, number six; Elwell, who took over the number six spot after Willett's withdrawal; and Segal, manager.

Chris Scott was elected captain for the 1961 season. This year's captain, Tom Warren, won the Tennis Trophy, given for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship.

Junior Varsity Football Although the J.V. Football team was not lacking in spirit and effort, it was able to win only one of its six games this season. This was due partly to the fact that the single-wing offense was entirely new to many of the boys coming up from lower teams, and the adjustment was not an easy one.

Nevertheless, by the end of the season, the team had made a great deal of improvement, and the boys were playing together very well.

Milton Academy was victorious in the first game by a score of 14-8. The offensive line of the Crokemen was the weak point, as time after time the Milton linemen crashed through and smothered the Belmont backs. In the first half Lynch scored the only touchdown for the Hillies on a 40yard dash. The second half was completely dominated by Milton, and Belmont was not even able to get the ball out of its own territory.

A traditionally strong Nobles team whipped the J.V.'s 2o-8 in the second game. The strong line of the opposition kept the Crokemen down to 8 points, which were gained by Doug MacLean's runback of a kickoff and Ron Druker's two point end run. The Noblemen scored once in each of the 1i8

first three periods. Belmont's backs could not get a running attack going, and they were thrown for losses when they tried to pass.

The strong running and passing of an undefeated St. Mark's team accounted for a 14-8 win over Belmont. They took advantage of superior power to score 14 points, on a charge through the Belmont line and a short pass over left end. Lynch again chalked up the only touchdown for the Hillmen as he raced ninety-five yards with a St. Mark's fumble. MacLean took a pass from Druker for the extra points.

Prospects for a victory seemed bright indeed for the J.V.'s in the third period of the Groton game, since they led by what seemed to be a safe margin, 16-6. Doug MacLean had scored twice on end runs of 40 and 7 yards, and passes from Druker to MacLean and Dick Birnie accounted for the extra points. However, the final quarter was calamitous for Belmont, as their defense collapsed, and the Groton backs galloped to a 28-16 win.

The mud and the rain contributed to the fifth loss in a row for the J.V.'s. Although MacLean

scored in the first period, this was the only time that Belmont was able to make a substantial gain against the strong Governor Dummer defense.

The second half saw the Belmont backs brought to a standstill, and the Governors amassed a 28-6 lead on a flanker pass, a long run, and a well-executed option play.

At Concord, in their last game, the J.V.'s rebounded with spirit to whip Middlesex, 34-6. For the first time, the Belmont backs were able to get up enough way to demonstrate their skill. Halfback Bill Lynch took the first kickoff and ran through the whole Middlesex team for the • first six points. The defensive team then showed their strength by forcing Middlesex to punt, and Lynch again carried across the goal line, a fifty-yard runback. A Druker to MacLean pass brought in another two points. A long second-period kickoff carried into the Middlesex end zone, where Steve Livingston fell on it.The defensive team allowed Middlesex their only six points in the last period, and Belmont's lead was enlarged by a MacLean run

Senior Football Despite several injuries at the crucial quarterback slot, the Senior Football team, under Mr. David Aloian, compiled the school's best gridiron record of three wins, two losses, and a tie. This Tformation squad was characterized by a big, rugged line and hard-running halfbacks.

Showing considerable improvement, the Seniors came from behind to tie Milton, r2-12. Once again, the visitors capitalized on Hill miscues to go out in front, by 12-0, but fullback Casselman was equal to the challenge as he tallied twice to knot the score.

St. Mark's pinned another defeat on the winless Aloianmen by trouncing Belmont Hill, 28-6, at Southboro. The Marksmen jumped into a decisive 16-o advantage early in the game, and Captain Loomis climaxed the fillies' only scoring drive with a short plunge in the third period.

Spirited defensive line-play by such stalwarts as "Jeep" Whitelaw and Dan Barnard shut out the Browne and Nichols attack on October 28. Meanwhile, Loomis reeled off a scoring ramble over tackle and Chris Fremont-Smith tallied on a reverse.

At Nobles and Greenough, quarterback Doug Amon heaved a fourth-quarter pass sixty yards to Mark Weinbaum for a touchdown, and the spirited defensive eleven held off a last minute Nobles' drive to keep the win,12-6. Fremont-Smith cracked over tackle for Belmont's first marker, but the Noblemen retaliated in the fourth period to deadlock the count.

Loomis scored all the Belmont touchdowns in the Seniors' rout of Middlesex. Tallying twice on plunges, and once on a pass from Amon, the burly captain led a superlative all-round display of football. Middlesex's only touchdown came on a long pass late in the game.

Junior Football 1959's Junior football team, impressive in victory but disappointing in defeat, compiled a record of two wins and three losses. The team's backfield strength lay in the experience of Captain Aldie Harrington, the speed of Don Andreson, and the power of Kent Parrot, while Ed Chase, John Weeks, Paul Silk, and Drew Brown anchored the line.

In their first game, the Juniors were overpowered by a strong St. Mark's unit, 24-0. The Marksmen, deftly exploiting weaknesses in Belmont Hill's defensive pattern, consistently shook their speedy halfbacks loose for long runs. The Hilltoppers seemed to have trouble adjusting to the visitors' T-formation tactics.

The Inghammen unleashed a pulverizing attack against Browne and Nichols to score a devastating 44-0 victory. Jumping off to a thirty-point margin in the first half, the Juniors coasted in for an easy victory. Captain Harrington contributed one of the scoring highlights on a brilliant reverse for his first touchdown of the year.

Don Andreson tallied fourteen points in game three to lead the Juniors to a 16-6 triumph over Rivers. Breaking away on a brilliant ramble around end for the first tally, Andreson added the extra points on a quick plunge over tackle. The speedy tailback later culminated a long drive by cracking over from fifteen yards out, then passing to center Ed Chase on a special extra-point maneuver.

In a close game with Roxbury Latin, the Juniors came out on the short end of a 12-10 verdict.

Neither team could score in the first half, which was highlighted by Belmont's brilliant goal-line stand in the closing minutes. Andreson tallied to open the scoring and threw a successful pass for the conversion, but a Roxbury pass caught the secondary napping, narrowing the gap to 8-6.

Minutes later the Latins staged a powerful scoring drive to gain a 12-8 advantage. In the fourth period Roxbury was caught deep in its own territory, and Harrington broke through to block a punt,

for a safety, to complete the scoring.

The Juniors lost their final game, 20-12, to a strong Noble and Greenough squad. Nobles scored twice in the first two periods for a 14-0 halftime advantage. In the third stanza, Fobin Murray burst into the open for a touchdown, but Nobles retaliated to open up their lead again. After Chip Spilios made a spectacular pass reception near the end zone, Kent Parrot smashed over center for the score. However, the Inghammen couldn't generate enough steam to even the count in the final stages.

Junior Varsity Soccer Coach Duncan's J.V. soccer team opened the season on a discouraging note by losing to Milton, 2-I. After an even first period, the visitors fired home two quick goals to reverse the advantage.

Bob Duncan and Sam Brown gave the Orange and Blue some anxious moments, but only Trevor Higonnet succeeded in blasting home a score. After his drive, Milton quickly re-established control of play.

Three-goal performances by Duncan and Rodger Mattlage sparked an 8-o shutout over Lawrence Academy. Butch Maxwell and Walter Densmore completed the scoring deluge, which saw Belmont Hill get four goals in each half. The third resulted in a decisive 4-1 victory over Tabor. Duncan tallied twice, and Maxwell and Mattlage scored one apiece.

Belmont Hill on October 16. Bob Elwell and Higonnet pushed home the only local tallies to tie the score at 2 apiece, but the Latins soon regained offensive control and fashioned the victory.

Another two-goal performance by Bob Duncan highlighted a 3-2 double-overtime victory over St. Mark's.Leading 2-0 on Duncan's first score and a tally by Higonnet, the J.V.'s saw the Marksmen retaliate to knot the score.After the first overtime, in which St. Mark's held a territorial advantage, Belmont Hill took over, and Duncan's second tally sealed the win.

Capitalizing on several Belmont mistakes, Browne and Nichols grabbed a 3-1 victory at Cambridge. Higonnet, on a cross from Brown, tied the score in the third quarter, but the Knights soon broke the tie, and they added an insurance score in the final minutes.

Wellesley High dealt the Belmont booters another loss, 3-2. Mattlage and Lonnie Marquand evened the count at 2-2, but the J.V. defense was unable to hold the tie.

Capitalizing on strong offensive play by Bill MacDonald, the Hillies rolled to a 4-1 victory over Brooks. MacDonald scored twice, while Duncan and Higonnet both connected once. However, Belmont yielded to Governor Dummer by a score of 4-2. Densmore and Duncan dented the victors' defense for single scores, but these were not enough to prevail against the speed, punch, and over-all finesse of the Governors.

ton had John Perry well covered in the rematch on Nov. ii. This time it was a closer contest, and the first half closed with a narrow -o lead for the Juniors, the goal having been scored by left-inside Peter Getting. Milton was eager to win after its previous humiliating defeat, and they scored two quick goals at the start of the second half to go ahead. But in their excitement over this turn of events, they neglected Perry, and he returned in his old fashion to drive in three goals for a 4-2 win.

On Friday the thirteenth, fate caught up with the team, and the Juniors dropped their last game

The Junior Soccer team this year compiled its best season record yet, winning five games while losing but one.

The first three games were called off because of rain. This provided the team with extra practice time before meeting up with an opponent.

The first game played was with Browne and Nichols. The team expected much tougher competition than it got. B & N was handicapped by an ineffective forward line, and the Juniors easily won, 3 to I. Milton was the team's next opponent, and here again the Hill team wasn't seriously challenged.

John Perry, at center, did most of the scoring, as Milton's fullbacks failed to cover him adequately.

The Juniors won,8-3. Coach Plumer correctly predicted that Perry would be more closely covered in the next Milton contest.

The next game, against Belmont Junior High, was the first home contest for the team. Here the Juniors met their first really competent squad.

Again Perry was outstanding, as he scored three goals. Our other goal was by halfback Jim Scott.

Belmont Junior High tallied once, leaving the score at 4-1.

The game with Applewild School, the first in Belmont's history, resulted in yet another victory.

Applewild seemed to be quite inexperienced. Halfback Coggeshall scored on a midfield penalty kick.

In the second period Perry scored, and Peter Shapiro, the left wing, toed in the final counter in the 6-o victory.

So far the Juniors had won every game by at least two goals. The team's average score was just under 5 points a game, while it had held the opposition to a meager one goal per game.

Wing Shapiro scored Belmont's only goal. After two second-period tallies by Governor Dummer, the Juniors were unable to come back.

The Juniors had a fine season,undeniably.There is no way, however, to know how the team might have stood up under tougher competition. On paper, John Perry, the center-forward, was the star of the team. He was, however, backed up by a strong halfback line, and was fed beautifully by his wings, Peter Maclaurin and Peter Shapiro.

Actually, the team was better balanced than it seemed. Next year the Juniors will probably have another good season, since the entire halfback line and the goalie will be returning.

Junior Varsity Hockey A spirited J.V. Hockey team, under Coach Charles Smith, compiled one of the most impressive records in history by winning nine and losing two, exclusive of the three one-period victories in the annual J.V. Jamboree.

The first game was an easy 6-1 victory over St. Sebastian's, as three goals in the first three minutes, by Gregg Robinson, Jeff Parker, and Wink Willett, iced the verdict. Bill Morton, the team's leading scorer, scored twice to stand as high pointgetter with Steve Hood, who garnered a goal and two assists.

Milton surprised Morton and Company with a 2-1 victory, but the local sextet rebounded to whip a strong Deerfield outfit, 2-1, on first period tallies by Mills and Parker. In a return match, the J.V.'s handed the same Milton squad a solid 4-o setback, as Aldie Harrington, Morton, Willett, and Burke provided the margin of victory for Pete Rowan's shutout. Boston Latin fell by the same score on second period tallies by Bob Duncan, Mills, Livingston, and Morton.

The J.V. Jamboree found the local sextet victorious over all comers. Livingston tallied a dramatic goal for a i-o win over Milton. The Browne and Nichols game was an easy 4-0 win, and St. Mark's was victimized, i-o, on Parker's score.

Parker netted a hat-trick in the 8-1 triumph over Brooks, and Morton's two goal effort clinched

a 6-3 verdict at St. Mark's. Noble and Greenough dealt the J.V.'s an upset loss, 3-I, as only Burke could find the range; but Middlesex was swamped, 8-o, by a veritable deluge of goals. Browne and Nichols provided little competition in a 4-2 verdict, with Morton and Burke providing the margin of victory. Finally, two goals each by Greg Hunt and Harrington, coupled with scores by Mills, Morton, Hood, and Willett, added up to an 8-1 triumph over Governor Dummer.

Numerals were awarded to: Bartol, Birnie, Burke, Clark, Delaney, J. Duncan, A. Harrington, Hood, G. Hunt, Hurley, Livingston, Mills, Morton, G. Parker, M. G. Robinson, Rowan, Willett.

Junior Hockey The Junior Hockey team ended the season with a 10-2-2 record under the coaching of Messrs. Boocock and Humphreys. In the first game the Juniors defeated Winchester by a score of 3-2. Andy Page hugged the nets for Belmont to safeguard the victory.

The second game was also against Winchester, with Belmont winning again, 5-3. Winchester held a lead of 3-2 going into the third period. The first line of Chase, Parrot, and Dorsey, played well, with Chase getting a hat-trick.

In their first league game the Juniors defeated Brookline Junior High, i-o. It was an even game, with both teams playing well, but Ed Chase got a breakaway with Parrot's pass to get the lone and winning goal.

In their next game Belmont nipped Needham Junior High, i-o, with Ed Chase again getting the only goal. Eddie broke away from the left wing on a pass from Dorsey to tally the winning goal.

The Juniors posted their third straight shutout 122

at the expense of B.C. Junior High. The Juniors completely dominated the play throughout the game against a weak B.C. team. Chris Elwell played the nets for the Juniors in the 6-o victory.

The Junior team went to Middlesex and defeated their freshmen, 7-2. Again playing a weak team, the Juniors dominated the play, with everybody getting a chance to play. Each line played well, and Dorsey netted three goals.

The Juniors' next victim was Dedham Junior High. The offense and the defense skated well in the 4-0 victory. Dedham could not get started with all three Belmont lines outplaying them.

Chris Elwell again held the nets for Belmont.

In their second meeting with Middlesex, the Juniors found a much-improved team, but they still beat them, 3-0, though Belmont didn't dominate as thoroughly as before. Both teams had their scoring chances.

Belmont finally lost its first game, to Newton Junior High. The over-confident Hillmen thought

that they could easily beat the league's last-place team. While the Juniors loafed, Newton took advantage of every opportunity and scored four goals.

The next game was with Browne and Nichols.

Belmont got two goals to win but neither team seemed able to mount a really effective attack. The final score was 2-1.

The next game was with a strong Wellesley deadlock. Wellesley team, and it resulted in a scored first, but the Juniors fought back and finally got a goal to tie the game.

The Juniors played Walpole for the Championship and lost, 1-0. The game was played to a scoreless tie through three periods, although both teams had many opportunities. In the overtime period, Walpole scored with a minute left.

The Juniors ended the season with a victory over Milton. Both teams played well, with Belmont getting a one-goal edge for the victory.

Junior Varsity Basketball which saw the Hillies score only one point in the first quarter. Druker and Amon, with four points apiece, were high men in the 29-16 loss. Groton extended Belmont's losing streak by allowing only one field goal and a foul shot in the opening stanza, then coasting to a 50-19 decision. Amon, Druker, and Weinbaum were the leading Belmont Hill basket-getters.

The Sanfordmen could make no headway against either Governor Dummer or St.Sebastian's, losing 44-22 and 26-16 respectively. The Governors shut out the Hillies in the first period, and St. Sibbies came close to doing the same thing, as both teams gained commanding early leads. Druker tossed in most of the Hilltopper points.

The drought ended with a spectacular 29-14 victory over Brooks. Druker netted twelve points, while Amon, John Perry, and Mike Morgan each contributed four to ice the verdict. Jubilation was short-lived, however, as Browne and Nichols put on a solid shooting display for a 40-22 triumph, Druker scoring II for Belmont. St. Paul's drubbed the local hoopsters, 35-19, and Noble and Greenough, despite Sam Hurd's magnificent twelvepoint effort, salvaged a 38-37 victory, before the Sanfordmen beat St. Mark's, 30-22. Amon and MacLean headed the local attack in the St. Mark's contest and in the 50-31 victory over Brooks. Particularly impressive at the end of the campaign was the all-around team play and the improvement in first-quarter scoring.

Numerals were awarded to: D. Amon, Druker, Manager Gilman, Hall, Hurd, MacLean, Morgan, W. Morrison, Perry, P. Rutley, Weinbaum.

The 1960 edition of the Junior Varsity Basketball team, which won four and lost nine under Coach Sanford, fared little better than its predecessors in the won-lost column; but some of its players demonstrated remarkable ability, which will doubtless be used to advantage on future Varsity squads. Of particular note were guards Ron Druker and Doug Amon,Center Mark Weinbaum, and forward Doug MacLean.

The opening game, against Rivers, was a 41-18 romp,and featured the shooting of Amon and Druker, but the same team could manage only 19

points against a strong Milton squad, which eked out a two-point verdict. MacLean, Amon,Druker, and Pete Rutley were responsible for all Belmont points. Noble and Greenough had little trouble in handing the Sanfordmen their second consecutive loss,33-22,as Belmont Hill had trouble finding the scoring range. Junior Basketball The Junior Basketball team, a hustling outfit, finished the season with a commendable 4-5 reccord. The Middle School five, coached by Mr. Olin Ingham, was particularly effective on the home floor, where it presented stiff competition for all corners.

Led by Captain George Whitelaw's nine points,

the Inghamboys raced to a 24-14 halftime advantage and a 51-26 victory over Rivers. The second tilt resulted in a 36-24 triumph over St. Marks, as big Joel Shapiro showed the way under the boards.

The Hilltoppers' balanced attack ran up against tough competition in the form of a tall Middlesex five, and Belmont slipped to a 30-19 loss. However, back in the friendly confines of the Belmont gym for game number four, the local five reverted

to its winning ways against Milton, with Shapiro and Whitelaw pacing the victors' scoring. St. Sebastian's broke the Inghamboys' streak of home victories with a clutch basket in the final seconds, for a 24-23 win, and a powerful Tabor unit continued this trend with a 33-16 victory, despite Shapiro's nine-point effort. Breaking out of a slump, the Hillies defeated Browne and Nichols, 39-34; John Donovan and Shapiro both dunked in nine points, and the former's three straight baskets iced the verdict. Again, a strong Middlesex team emerged victorious, 31-24, as the Juniors failed to find the range. The season ended on a sour note, for the Middle Schoolers fell to St. Mark's by a whopping 60-35 score; in this contest the defense fell completely apart.

Shapiro, Whitelaw, Donovan, and Spilios were responsible for most of the team's scoring, while Foster, Whitelaw, Shapiro and Feresten were strong beneath the boards. Back-court aces were Bergen and Andresen. Bell, Furnald, Coggeshall, Feresten and Foster formed the nucleus of a strong bench.

In the two Junior B games, Belmont Hill was paced by Bob Bell, who scored ii points in the victory over Milton's B team, and 7 in the close win over the Reading YMCA team. Other big factors in the victories were Porter Coggeshall and John Donovan.

The Inghammen rebounded to smash Brooks, 14-11, and earned a gratifying 7-5 victory over the Dick Wile,Jack Cullen, and Sam Hurd in the outsame St. Mark's outfit,as pitcher Druker and shortfield. Alternating with these starters were Bill stop MacLean gathered two hits apiece. Governor Ross, Stan Colla, Dave Burke, Don Rutley, John Dumrner, previously unsuccessful against the Litvack, and Dick Reed.

Senior Baseball The Seniors' baseball season was a story of rain, tough breaks, and frustration. Because of four narrow losses, the team record was a mediocre 3-5.

The personnel of the team was anything but mediocre, however. Paced by Captain Johnny Smethurst and sluggers Tommy Werman, Ricky Loomis, and Paul Dorsey, the team presented a formidable hitting attack. The infield stalwarts were shortstop Paul Dorsey and third baseman Butch Maxwell. Mike Austin did all of the catching for the team and performed creditably. Other infielders were second basemen Tom Saliba and Bob Bell and first baseman Loomis. The outfield consisted of Werman, Shapiro, Sognes, and FremontSmith. The pitching was done by Smethurst, who started 7 games, and relieved in the other.

In the first game, Belmont Hill lost to Rivers by a 1-0 score. John Smethurst went the distance, but was unable to get the full support of his teammates.

The second game also ended in a defeat for the Seniors, as they dropped a decision, on errors, to Milton at the Academy.

The third tilt of the year ended in a third frustrating defeat, as the Hilltoppers dropped a 4-3 squeaker to St. Mark's at home. Belmont Hill almost pulled it out of the fire with a powerful rally in the final frame, but the game ended with a Sen-

ior runner being tagged out at the plate.

It was four games and four defeats as the Seniors lost again to the St. Sebastian J.V. team,6-s. Belmont Hill went into the last inning sporting a 5-3 lead, but St. Sibbies turned the tide.

Playing before a Fathers and Sons day crowd, the team responded with a 6-5 win over Browne and Nichols. Four straight hits knocked out the B & N starter, and the Seniors were never headed.

Belmont Hill swamped Middlesex by a 19-3 score as sixteen free passes were handed out by the Middlesex pitchers. Mike Austin paced the winners with a 3 for 3 day and five runs-batted-in.

Belmont Hill won its third straight as they downed Roxbury Latin, 4-2. Johnny Smethurst provided the pitching and Tommy Werman supplied the batting punch.

Belmont Hill lost the closing game of the season to Noble and Greenough by a 6-5 score. In the final inning, Nobles took the victory.

Junior Baseball

In the next contest, cheered on by a large Fathers and Sons Day crowd, the Juniors bounced back to edge Browne and Nichols by a score of 4 to 3. The highlight of the game came when substitute John Wright hit a deep double to win the game. John Weeks, Eddie Chase, Jim Scott, and Miles Fletcher all picked up singles, while Bill Sullivan, setting Wright a useful example, weighed in with a double.

The season's sixth game, with St. Sebastian's, was quite a thriller. In the first inning Belmont collected 7 runs on 2 hits, by John Weeks and Bill Sullivan, while St. Sebastian's scored twice in the bottom half. In the second inning, the Sawyermen, with a 7-2 lead, went down in order, while the Saints picked up another run.The following inning, Belmont grabbed 2 more runs on 2 hits. Despite the three runs which Saint Sebastian's tallied in the fifth and final inning, the Hillies were victorious, 9-6.

Milton defeated the Juniors in the next-to-last game, 4-2, despite Porter Coggeshall's fine pitching. The season closed on a happy note, however, as Belmont, behind another splendid effort on the part of Coggeshall, whitewashed Roxbury Latin,

The first game, against Fessenden, was lost by a score of 7-5. Rivers, however, proved not so formidable, and Belmont, sparked by John Weeks' double in the fifth, won handily, 8-4.

In the third game of the year, the Fenn School downed the Hillies by a score of 6 to 3. This game

was frustrating, as Belmont failed to collect a hit.

The Juniors then went up against Noble and Greenough and were again defeated, 8-6. John Weeks, Eddie Chase, and Jim Scott contributed singles, but in a losing cause.
