Phil Bredesen Interview Transcript Date: Uncertain Time: 46:04 Bill Carey (BC): HCA is head of the international nursing department. Phil Bredesen (PB): That's correct. BC: So you hit the streets and you got a job with HAI? PB: That's correct. BC: What was your first job there? PB: My first job there was uh, marketing and management, hospital management contracts. BC: So you had a bunch of contracts under you, or? PB: No, I, I had to go sell them so BC: Ohh oh oh, oh the manager- and not the, not the ownership business but the managementPB: The management business yeah And that’s what HAI or HCI did or did not do at that time PB: yeah HAI did that and then. Then I moved from that on to actually developing a couple company owned hospitals to maintain which was Hendersonville hospital. That was my project BC: Oh PB: and and then I moved from that into running a support group that went out of the hospitals and helped solve management problems and technical problems. It was called Staff Services or something. BC: OK, And you left in 80’ and basically the street, the street explanation is that people say that you thought you could run a better HMO than I guess INA, and INA owned HAI at that point. (1:05) PB: INA owned HAI yeah BC: And, you just wanted to run your own managed care company. PB: Yeah, I had, they had they had put a toe in the water with with uh, with HMO's. They bought one called Inter- I forget one out in Los Angeles OK, but 1
