n 1918, a beautiful young graduate of Chowan College was married to a handsome post-graduate student of the Southern Semi nary of Louisville, Kentucky.

The

young couple was Mr. and Mrs. R. Kelly White, and the wedding took place at Portsmouth, Virginia. five.

Mrs. White was nineteen years old and Mr. White was twenty-

For the next four years the young couple lived in Louisville, until Mr. White

finally became Dr. White.

While living at Louisville, he held several student pas-

torates which gave him the experience he would soon need.

His first full-time pas-

torate was in Marion, Alabama, where the young couple stayed for four years. Dr. White's next pastorate was the First Baptist Church of Bessemer, Alabama. Although this church had nine hundred members, the Whites left it in October of 1928 to come to Nashville, Tennessee, because Dr. White had felt led by God to accept the Belmont Heights Baptist Church, which at that time had members.

With the acceptance of this new pastorate

came a

new challenge.

Belmont Heights, caught in the throes of the depression, was heavily in debt, and it was not very strong in comparison to the other churches in Nashville.

Realizing

that their task would be impossible without God's help, Dr. and Mrs. White pui their faith in Him and set about the task of overcoming these difficulties. they left Belmont Heights after

When

7/ years of service, there were 2,000 members.

The Whites then moved to West Palm Beach, Florida as the leaders of the First Baptist Church. Palm

During the six and one-half years that the Whites were in

Beach, the church there made great advancements, with the membership

increasing from I 720 to 28 16.

They would probably have still been in West Palm

Beach had God not led them to Belmont College.

Although Dr. White had been

closely associated with several colleges prior to his coming to Belmont, his primary interest had not been

The Baptist Student Union is the campus organization which seeks to help the students lead a richer and fuller Christian life. In addition to helping the students become active in the work of local churches, the BSU also sponsors worship services on the campus at hours which do not conflict with church worship services. These services include dormitory prayer meetings and noon-day and vesper services every week-day. In addition, the BSU sponsors may social events, such as the 'Get-Acqainted Party,' a Hal doween Party, and the annual Sweetheart Banquet, which is its most outstanding event of the year. All of these activitias are planned at a pre-school retreat in the fall, which is attended by the executive council and interested students. Statewide retreats and conventions of the BSU are also held at various times during the year. The BSU on our campus and on all college campuses has as its goal the linking together of the students in a chain of Christian love and the furnishing of Christ-centered activities for Baptist students.

The Ionian Literary Society began the school year with an all-campus pledge party. Off-campus entertainment featured musicians from Peabody College Music Department and Vanderbilt University. After two membership drives this year, the I

Famous for their wiener roasts and strong athletic chal-

The Athenian Club was founded on January I4, 1952, with eighteen charter members. Since then the club has made great advances, adding seventeen nev members this year. The purposes of the Athenians are to live up to the ideals of citizenship at Belmont! to achieve scholastic distinction, to appreciate all forms oi beauty, to know the satisfaction of teamwork, to strive for knowledge which gives understanding, and to practice kindness which is the key to the hearts of others. With these purposes in mind, every Athenian is proud to keep this pledge: I pledge myself to be loyal to myself, my school, and my club, and will be a true an loyal Athenian. Our club house during the past year has been the scene of many parties and other activities. Particularly outstanding was the Halloween Rush party at which the new members were welcomed into our club. I

The past year has been an exciting one for the Philathians. Such social functions as the Get-Acquainted Party,' at which prospective members were introduced to the various phases of the club's activities; initiation, with all the new members gaudily dressed: the wiener roast at Ridgetop Lake; the reception for the cast of "The Monkey's Paw,' and the tacky party on March 6, the highlight of our social season-all of these parties have provided memories which we shall not soon forget. In sports, too, we have been active with the games between the two Philathian basketball teams serving as preparation for our meeting with and overcoming the Ionian team. We confidently believe, however, that this year's accomplishments are only a portion of greater things to come next year. I
