RANSOM KELLY WHITE
Dr. Ransom Kelly White, first president of Belmont College, was born May 12, 1893 in Connellys Springs, North Carolina. He was ordained to the Southern Baptist ministry on June 17, 1917. After the completion of his education, he served churches in Marion and Bessemer, Alabama. He was pastor of Belmont Heights Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee, from 1935 to 1946. In 1946 he became pastor of the First Baptist Church, West Palm Beach, Florida. Having served his denomination with distinction for thirty-five years, in 1952 Dr. White resigned the pastorate at West Palm Beach to become the president of Belmont College. His administration of Belmont has been based upon his, conviction that the function of a church college is Christian education which, if effective, must cultivate spirit as well as mind. In dedicating the 1958 TOWER to Dr. White, we affirm our faith that Belmont will fulfill his dream of a great college whose students grow not only in wisdom, but in favor with God and man. And now, Dr. White, as the term of your presidency nears its close, we say "Thank You." May your labor as president of Belmont, in its far-reaching results, prove the crown of a life richly spent in the service of God and man.

The nucleus of the College is the old Acklen residence, "Belmont," an unusual ante-bellum adaptation of Italian achitecture, constructed in 1850. Grouped around this historic center of an old Southern estate are the buildings that have been added at intervals.

The Chi Alpha Nu Society, was founded in 1951 as the XAN's. In 1954 the present name was adopted. The purpose of the Chi Alpha Nu Club is to develop friendship among the women on Belmont's campus, to create a wholesome social life for each member of the club, and to uphold the high spiritual ideals of Belmont College. Throughout the year the members have sponsored slumber parties, after-game parties, and a skating party.

The purpose of the Philathian Society is to create and promote Christian character in the academic, athletic, religious, and social aspects of Belmont life. The motto of the society is "Clasped hands and pure hearts mold lasting friendships." The past year has been an exciting one for the Philathians with such social functions as the rush party, at which prospective members were introduced to the various phases of the club's activities. The pledge week brought much fun to everyone. Athletics have always been a specialty with this club. The football and basketball team prepared for their meeting with the Phi Nus. "Growth" is the most apt description of the Kappa Delta Sigma Society. Because of the work each member has done this has been one of the best years our club has seen.

After formal initiation there came slumber parties, week end parties, and hayrides which brought fun, too. All is not play; there are times of work and times of helping in philanthropic causes. Fellowship with Christian friends is one of the intrinsic rewards of the Kappas. This year Phi Nu Sigma has been one of Belmont's most progressive social clubs. From a humble beginning with only six charter members, the club has blossomed to a membership of over forty. Phi Nus will never forget such wonderful activities as the rush party at "the Blue Room of Club Phi Nu," the freshman initiation banquet, the march uptown in pajamas, the hayrides, the Christmas party, and the never to be forgotten weekend fishing trips. The Phi Nus had a great sports year, being runner up in football, and champions in basketball. Each member of the society feels it a duty to uphold the ideals of Belmont College and of the club. The ambition is to make Belmont the finest institution in America and the club, the school's finest. FIRST

GOVERNMENT
The Student Government Association is the core of all activities on the Belmont campus. Every student is a member of the Association. S.G.A. officers are the connecting link between the student body and the faculty and the administration. They work in close cooperation with the dean of students, Dr. Phelps. The Student Government Association is composed of three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The Executive Council is composed of seven officers elected each spring by the student body.
The Legislative Council is composed of nineteen members who represent all phases of college activities. The representation is as follows: one member from each divisional group of organizations, one from each non-divisional group, two from each residential classification, and two from each academic class. The Judicial Council is composed of fve members who are appointed by the Executive Council and approved by the Legislative Council. The five justices are: one Chief Justice who must he a Junior or Senior, and four Associate Justices who represent the four academic classes. 61
THE TowER is the official yearbook of Belmont
College. It takes its name from the historic brick tower on the campus which was a part of the original Acklen estate and was used as a look-out post by the Union Army during the Battle of Nashville. Standing

organization. This group has entertained throughout the state and has apeared twice on the program of the Southern Baptist Convention. The Belltones were organized in the fall of 1957. Membership in this girls' group is by audition. Mr. Dee Wayne White is director of Music at Delmont.
The three major choral groups at Belmont are the Belmont Choir, Belmont Glee Club, and Belltones. The Belmont Choir is open to all students without audition. The Choir is popular on the campus and makes numerous appearances throughout the state. The Belmont Glee Club is primarily a men's

Every Baptist student on the campus is a member of the Baptist Student Union. Resident and non-resident students as well as many other denominations participate in its activities. B.S. U. is "Baptist with pride and Christian without apology." Through its organization, the activities of the various religious groups on the campus are coordinated. Highlights of B.S.U. social activities are the Halloween party and the Sweetheart Banquet which is held on Valentines day. The main event of the evening is the crowning of the B.S.U. The Belmont Vision is the school newspaper, published monthly. It is produced by the students of journalism under the supervision of the professor of journalism, Mr. George Clark. The Speech Masters Club is sponsored by the Department of Speech and Dramatics. It is composed of students who compete in intercollegiate speech contests. Several of its members with the sponsor, Mrs. Margery Bunyard, attended the Speech Festival held this year in Houston, Texas.

Each year the May queen and her court are elected by the student body. Five girls are chosen by popular ballot. The queen is crowned on May Day and rules over the festivities. This year the theme of May Day was "Down South." Girls donned ante-bellum costumes for the day and the boys, with bona-fide beards, presented a realistic picture of gentlemen of the old south.

High lights of the 1958 basketball season were the high scoring of Cliff McClendon and Jerry Vradenburg, the fine leadership of captain Eddie Greer and alternate captain Chuck Fentress, and the brilliant comeback of Lou Cunningham in the tournament after suffering a broken hand against Lipscomb. In the tournament, Cunningham's last shot against Bethel challenged Vradenburg' s 87 points and 45 rebounds as the highest scorer for the Rebs. Attracting particular interest was the homecoming contest with the alumni. Ex-captains Temp Sparkman and James Ray Pugh played on the alumni team. Coach Griff, Charlie and Eddie
