DEDICATION To you, Mrs. McKnight, our adviser, leader, and friend, whose daily life has constantly shown devotion and dedication to our Lord, we dedicate the 1956 TOWER. A quiet smile, a calm voice, a keen perception and understanding of human nature, a genuine interest in the lives of those around-these are just a few of the impressions we have when we think of you.

OUR PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY

Our President represents the wisdom that leads to successful administration, the foresight that makes for good management, and the fine sense of values that anchors all students in dedication to highest ideals. His leadership has helped the students in the threefold growth: physical, mental, and spiritual. Mrs. White graces our campus. She is a true Southern lady. The traditions so meaningful at Belmont are perpetuated in the charm of her home. Permeated with her cordial hospitality, the College perhaps unconsciously comes to realize the significance of "those nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love," which gives character to what otherwise might pass for routine. We salute President and Mrs. White.

What goes into making an Annual? Many problems; late hours; struggles with details; even a few tears, but also laughter; and the satisfaction of knowing you have done your best-these are only a few of the memories. Late in the spring quarter of 1955 work began on the '56 edition of the TowER. The co-editors were elected by the student body, and the co-editors in turn choose the staff. The compiling of an accurate record of this school year was made possible through the helpful cooperation of students, faculty, and campus organizations. Without the exceptional cooperation of the people whose names appear on this page it would not have been possible to bring you the '56 TOWER.

Each year, usually in the spring quarter, the Belmont student body votes for one who is called an editor. This person has an overwhelming responsibility. Under his leadership and with the assistance of a faculty advisor, a staff of assistants is chosen as helpers. This group grows larger by the addition of people who accept the responsibility of working on the Belmont Vision. Within nine months, nine deadlines are met, nine editions go to press, nine boxes of aspirin are taken, and the students receive nine editions of the Vision. Of tabloid size, with five columns, four to six pages, it has a circulation of almost seven hundred. The paper is completely a student publication. What goes into the paper is determined by the staff. This publication seeks to be a true representation of Belmont since all areas of the college are represented on the staff. To encourage students to receive the proper training for such journalism Belmont College offers five quarters of Journalism, to be taken in the sophomore, junior, and senior years. These courses in Journalism encourage students to write for the paper and thus produce a paper of quality.

s T u D I 0 The Studio Players moved into new quarters this year. They opened the '55-56 season with the production of Wilder's Our Town. Their next experiment was the production of a medieval Christmas miracle play, The Birth of Jesus. During the winter quarter the classes in Directing and Play Production began play-discussion sessions in which student- directed productions were staged. These productions included: Trista, a Carolina folk play; The Rope by Eugene O'Neill; Chekov's The Boor; The Paternity

Case; Aristophones' The Birds; and The Rising of the Moon. The Religious drama touring group played during March, April, and May to churches in Tennessee and Southern Kentucky with lob, Prince of Uz. The highlight of the tour was the trip in April to Memphis to the Drama Festival. There Shall Be No Night, by Robert Sherwood was the major production of the spring. The season closed with a rollicking production of My Three Angels.

Kappa Delta Sigma, formerly Athenian, was founded in 1951. Though it has been in existence four short years, the society has increased its membership almost four times. The society purposes to live up to the ideals of citizenship at Belmont College, to achieve scholastic distinction, to appreciate all forms of beauty, to know the satisfaction of teamwork, to strive for knowledge which gives understanding, and to practice kindness, which is the key to the hearts of others. The Kappas have enjoyed many things together. But the most inspiring and heartwarming was the presentation of a Thanksgiving basket to a very needy family. The Freshman class sponsored this project. To top off the year's many activities, the members of the club journeyed out to the Rawlings for a week-end party.

Chi Alpha Nu has as its object and purpose to develop friendship among the women on the campus, to practice truth, to present a spirit of graciousness, to exercise self-control, to create a wholesome Christian social life for each member of the society, and to uphold the high spiritual ideals of Belmont College. Every fall the club entertains its members at a hayride where fun and fellowship are enjoyed by each member. One of the more inspiring parties sponsored by the club is the annual Christmas party given for the orphans of a local orphanage. Two of the honors of the club are "Miss Chi Alpha Nu" and "Miss Chi Alpha Nu Pledge." These two favorites are honored each year at a banquet held in the spring.

Founded in 1953, Phi Nu Sigma purposes to promote fellowship and mutual trust among its members; to uphold traditions and ideals of Belmont College; to encourage excellence in scholarship; and to inculcate in its members the highest ideals of Christian manhood and good citizenship. Although being in existence only a few short years, the Phi Nu Sigmas have become a very active organization on campus. Several of its members have brought honors to their club, not only through participation in sports, but also in various other ways. One of the main social activities of the club is the annual fish fry held for the members and their dates. The club thrives on the fact that it does much to boost school spirit. Our motto for this year is: "Success comes in can's, not in can'ts."

The purpose of the Philathian Society is to create and promote Christian character in the academic, athletic, religious, and social aspects of Belmont life. The motto of the soicety is "Clasped hands and pure hearts mold lasting friendships." The Philathians had many outstanding socials on their calendar of events. The pledges dressed out in hillbilly costumes and beards and visited the Grand Old Opry. In December a hayride was held for all the members and their dates. The last and perhaps most outstanding event was the installation banquet held in April. It was here that the award was made to the outstanding senior man chosen by the Philathans.

In the athletic field the Philathians emerged victorious. They were not only champions in football intramurals, but also in basketball intramurals.

BASKETBALL Basketball is building right along with Belmont College. When Coach Larry Striplin came here in 1952 we did not have intercollegiate basketball. Under his ambitious hands and dynamic spirit we can now say we have a real team. Basketball is a publicity agent. Many of us first heard of Belmont through its basketball team. Our rise as a Tennessee power in basketball was not easy. Every competing school offers basketball scholarships. Our school had to start from scratch. There were no alumni. The big question is: How' d you do it? It wasn't one man that did our game winning. Those games which were won were won through various channels. Our school spirit rose to new heights this year. The best cheerleaders of our history, a pepped-up student body, a fired-up faculty, and a supporting administration added that extra spark which, when ignited, spelled victory. Next year finds Belmont still in good shape. Barnes, being our only senior, will be the only player not returning. Hilton Jones will be back for his fourth year and undoubtedly be moved from forward into the pivot, his high school position. The forwards will have Bill Rutherford, Donnie Gross, Warren Gilley, Charlie Fentress, and Eddie Greer. The guards will have plenty of competition with Ozzie Reynolds, James Ray Pugh, Billy Owens, and Harold Pickel. Bill Jones will certainly be fighting for a position and his hustle could possibly win out. This has been a good year and as our student body increases in number surely our basketball victories will follow suit. Left to right: Harold Pickel, Ozzie Reynolds, James Ray Pugh, Bill Rutherford, Eddie Greer, Hilton Jones, Warren Gilley, Donnie Gross, Robert Barnes, Billy Owens, Bill Jones.

The 1956 Baseball Team was coached by W. C. Griffith, Athletic Director, and Buster Boguskie, former Vol player. Both of these men worked hard to put the baseball team on its feet. Eddie Scott, re-elected captain, Warren Gilley and Sonny Knox were the only lettermen who returned. The rest of the team were either freshmen or transfer students.
