Welcome to this special edition of FILAMemphis, Inc. magazine, "2021: A Year in Review!” “Hybrid” was the word we consistently heard last year — from hybrid classes to hybrid business sales to hybrid health care. We definitely had hybrid programming in 2021 with virtual programs via Zoom and inperson programs during the summer. With much vigor, we culminated 2021 at our Pasko Sa Memphis Christmas Gala. It was a great year without a doubt! I am grateful to work with the most wonderful team of officers, committee chairs, board members, volunteers, and of course, you and the community who this organization represents. In this issue, we will highlight all programs including an overview of the organization's financial status. I hope you enjoy this publication. Let's work together again in 2022 and make it the best as we celebrate our 45th year anniversary.

PROGRAM REPORT A total of $1,800 was awarded to four deserving high school seniors which was presented during the 2021 Christmas Gala, "Pasko sa Memphis" King and Queen of Hearts 2021, Bill and Elena Akin raised a total of $1,180 Two past scholars, Christina Jupson (2001) and Nicole Manes (2009), gave back to the scholarship program for a total of $600 A Lifetime member donated $250 A non-member who attended "Pasko Sa Memphis" Christmas Gala donated $100 to the program

PROGRAM REPORT A total of $5,500 was disbursed from the 2021 fund Five individuals were endorsed and approved to receive funds based on unique needs including but not limited to: a. Emergency medical procedures resulting in prolonged hospital stay with mounting medical bills b. A young mother of three who was new to the US and was at the brink of becoming homeless c. A parent who lost a spouse to a traumatic accident and is now left by herself to provide to a family of three children d. A young child with ongoing medical needs due to a congenital medical condition Two Memphis-based non-profit organizations that provide medical missions to the Philippines US-based non-profit organization that assists communities in the Philippines that were badly affected by Typhoon Odette

King & Queen of Hearts The King and Queen of Hearts is a
representation of love, harmony and unity with a bond so strong between a couple that is worth emulating and admired by the community. They are also ambassadors for philanthropic deeds having impacted the lives of deserving high school senior students by raising scholarship funds for them. Bill and Elena Akin were the King and Queen of Hearts 2021 and raised $1,180 for the scholarship program .
Food for the Heart More than 1,131 pan de sals, brazo de mercedes, tortas and bikos were baked for the FOOD-IBIG Fundraising courtesy of Yvonne Lowery, Genevieve Summers, Cielo Remorque, and our Bol-anon friend who devoted their time in baking these goods! And oh, everything was SOLD OUT!
EASTER BAGS GRAB 'N GO!
Due to restrictions brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, the officers of FILAMemphis, Inc. decided no in-person Easter Egg Hunt during April 2021. Instead, a Curbside Easter Bag Grab ‘n Go goodies were distributed to the youngsters on April 4th at The Church of the Nativity.

ISANG LINGGO SANTA C RUZAN While we couldn't have out prayer procession, our week long celebration began with a nightly prayer of the Holy Rosary to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each of the five nights was led by different members in our community!
FLORES DE MEMPHIS Our annual Santacruzan is never complete without the next class of our Reynas. On May 15, 2021, we debuted the newest Reynas and a new one too! Even though it was over ZOOM, we were still able to capture each Reyna's beauty.

Reyna Emperatriz was portrayed by Grace Clark. She represents the Saint Helena of Constantinople, or the Queen. Grace is originally from Bicol, and now works as a nurse in Memphis.

Portrayed by Diamond Clark, Reyna Elena represents the young Elena, or Helena of
Constantinople. She carries a cross, and is attriubted to be it's legendary found. Diamond is currently a Finance major at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Celebrating 123 years of PHILIPPINES INDEPENDENCE DAY
In commemorating the 123rd Anniversary of the Philippines Independence Day, FILAMemphis, Inc. made the symbolic distribution of Philippine Flags to the community on June 6, 2021 at The Church of the Nativity. The colors blue, red and yellow were the dominant colors of the day as some members of the Filipino-American community proudly waved their flags.
kuwentuhan is a storytelling and story book reading of original and retold Filipino stories. These stories do not just bring entertainment to the family but also share moral lessons to youngsters. The first ever kuwentuhan debuted on June 12, 2021 via Zoom. The motherdaughter tandem of Cielo and Erin Remorque read the story, "Labindalawang Masayang Prinsesa (Twelve Merry Princesses)" in both Tagalog and English languages. kuwentuhan made its second appearance on September 25, 2021. Stories read were "Ibong Adarna", the eponymous mythical bird, as read by the mother-son team of Laarni and Earl Landicho. Gay and Maya Pacris, another mother-daughter pair read the "Alamat ng Ampalaya" (The Legend of the Bitter Gourd).

FILAM FIELD DAY A FIRST FOR FILAM After a winter and spring spent in social distancing, our community was definitely ready to get back together! Field Day was an idea brought up by our youth, thinking about their Field Day events in school. Of course, we had to make our THE
own spin on it and have a great potluck and a host of fun games for all of our members. Three teams rose to the challenge and recruited members of all ages. They came decked out in their colors, red, yellow, and blue, from matching shirts to face paint! After our potluck, games started and ran for hours! In the heat and rain, the teams competed and the completion was tough, even needing a tie breaker! After all that, the blue team came out on top! The fun kept going after the games, as all the youth played volleyball on the sand before going to get ice cream, true testament to our community camaraderie!

On October 2, 2021, some of FILAMemphis, Inc. members volunteered in Run Aid Station # 7 at Hyde Park of Shelby Farms distributing water to IRONMAN participants to keep them hydrated and help them finish strong. FILAMemphis, Inc. received a grant from IRONMAN Foundation in the amount of $1,700.

FILAMemphis, Inc. was invited to CDOM's (Catholic Diocese of Memphis) 50th Year Anniversary and proudly showcased the different costumes and dresses of the Philippines representing different festivals, and native products of the country. The young members of FILAMemphis, Inc also performed the Malong Dance to a crowd of many representing different nationalities.
Kids and adults like were treated to mythical Filipino creatures in person plus an outdoor movie. Troops 87 & 457 also shared some of their survival skills & knowledge to a good group of trick or treaters.
