PASKO SA MEMPHIS: Bayanihan Para sa Mga Sundalo ng Bayan
Stephen Monisit Special Events Committee Chairperson his year, FILAMemphis, Inc’s mission is to establish and provide funding for our charitable and humanitarian project. The Executive board and officers of FILAMemphis, Inc. have joined together and formed a committee – The Special Event Committee to conduct a charitable fund raising campaign, Bayanihan para sa Bayan (A campaign benefiting the family members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines who were slain in the military interventions in the city of Marawi). We participated in weekly discussions and strategic planning for the future for FILAMemphis non-profit charitable campaign and humanitarian program, to share goals and to find ways to better support our organization and the community we served. Our goal is to raise $5000 for our humanitarian project. To achieve this noble goal, we organized a yearly Christmas Gala - Pasko sa Memphis. Pasko sa Memphis is the launching event for this charitable campaign. The campaign will launch in January 2018 and run through June 2018. We plan to have a number of other fundraising events and humanitarian programs to help us reach our goals. This is going to be a long process and we’re going to have to continue to work to make sure that we reach our goal. The battle for Marawi (Islamic) city began on May 23, 2017. We have been closely watching to what was happening in Marawi city, the Armed Forces of the Philippine has been deeply entrenched to keep fighting terrorists from taking over the city. The five-month long siege in Marawi ended last October 23, 2017 and marked the beginning of the healing process and rehabilitation of the people in the Islamic city. These unsung heroes sacrificed their lives to save as many other lives as they could for the safety and security of their fellow Filipinos. We will be forever grateful to the Filipino soldiers who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our nation. In return for their services and sacrifices made for our country (Philippines), FILAMemphis, Inc. believed that the soldiers slain and their families are deserving of our support that will help and enable them to live confident and productive lives. The best thing all of us can do is to raise as much money as we can. FILAMemphis, Inc. is asking you to join us in supporting the families of the fallen soldiers in Marawi and we will ensure that 100% of the net proceeds of the money that we raise will go to the selected organization in the Philippines. Your contribution large or small is much needed and will make a difference to the families of the fallen soldiers. This is only a small token to what they have already sacrificed for our kababayan in the Philippines. It’s time for us to give back, to give our thanks to these heroes. Let’s celebrate victory! Let’s enjoy a day of fun with families, friends, and new found friends. And what better way to celebrate the victory and beginning of the season than to be part of the Christmas Gala hosted by the FILAMemphis, Inc. This year’s Christmas Gala, FILAMemphis, Inc. is celebrating Pasko sa Memphis in style by sharing tradition and heritage, including food, musical performance, and showcasing a variety of mixed modern dance. Our youth and parents will have presentations to honoring the slain soldiers in Marawi City. Everything that the participants are doing is simply the greatest testament of their endless and unconditional support to this organization. I am truly and extremely grateful to the members of the special event committee who are very dedicated, very compassionate in helping and volunteering as their commitment to our charitable cause and to the success of our organization. On behalf of the Special Event Committees of FILAMemphis, Inc., I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank everyone involved for their countless support on launching this fundraising charitable campaign. We are very grateful to the parents of participants of the event for encouraging and supporting the charitable cause. Words cannot describe the feeling of appreciation and pride for the amazing dedication of the committee members and volunteers. The Executive officer, Board of Directors and members of FILAMemphis, Inc. would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of you attending our Christmas Gala, and our deepest gratitude to all who have so generously given time and to the contributors, sponsors and donors for your donation. It also gives us the opportunity to thank the loyal members of our organization for their ongoing support and active participation in our events. I know we will all work hard to achieve our charitable campaign this coming year – benefiting the family members of the slain soldiers in action in Marawi city in the Philippines. A Message from the President
Merry Christmas To All Greetings, As many of you know, Christmas is a time to come together as one to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ. It is the season to enjoy the company of our loved ones and give thanks to what the year has brought to us individually, to our friends and families, but most importantly the Fil-Am community. I would like to share with you all my insights from the past year while reflecting on the meaning of Christmas; and in doing this, I hope we can all be reminded of the purpose of being one community - especially being so far from our homeland. Since the beginning of my Presidency, I have focused on the younger generation. I believe that instilling the Filipino culture, values, and traditions in them will set a solid foundation for the future of our community. As I have said before, they are our future leaders who will continue the legacy of this organization. I am humbled and blessed to see many from this generation partake in their Filipino culture, and tonight you too will all see these future leaders share the same traditions that we once practiced on Filipino soil. Though my focus has been on the younger generation, it is not without the knowledge and understanding from the elder generation that made it all possible. We ourselves need to know the history that runs through our Filipino blood before we can pass any tradition along. Each generation sets the example for the next, and this is how the community will strengthen. I understand my position as President is to lead the organization. However, it takes more than one to help an entire generation grow. Our sons and daughters, nephews and nieces, grandchildren and godchildren are only given the experiences we can provide for them as a community. Being away from the Philippines – the physical land and atmosphere – makes it hard to provide the same experiences we had for our own children, but that is when us as a community step in. We are the Philippines. We are the home away from home. Whether we are in Memphis or Chicago, Manila or Cebu, our own home or at our workplace, we carry the Philippines within each of us. It is in our homes, in our children, but mainly in our hearts. The growth of our community does not depend only on one person or one group of people. It depends on each of us individually as a whole, serving each other just as Jesus Christ has served for us. I hope you all share in my thoughts about our community, and the desire to help it strengthen and grow. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all, “Together we will make a difference”. Chairman of the Board BoardBBBoBoard Through the years, Pasko sa Memphis has become an annual Christmas tradition for us Filipino-Americans here in the Mid-South. Planning for this festivity usually starts in August and as the month of September kicks in, performers begin to trade their weekends of fun for weekends of serious commitment. I say serious commitment as it is no joke to give up 12 of your Sundays to learn and practice new dance steps. These performers, children and adults alike, unselfishly give up their time that they could have spent chilling with friends in the mall, traveling with family to their favorite get-away destination; and for some, working a 12-hour shift with pay differentials which means extra money for Christmas shopping. Yet, I ask why give up your weekends for FILAMemphis? Really, why and in exchange for what? I can only say that we as an organization must be doing something right for people to be this committed. Witnessing the camaraderie among the parents and children during these past weeks of preparation is very heartwarming. We are a community and this is what people in the community do. We get involved. We share our time and talent to our organization for causes that we believe. And because of that, I am forever grateful for everyone’s contribution to our organization. It is one of our duties as officers and board members to protect the integrity and the legacy of the organization as this represents our community. I strongly believe that as a community, we have become more cohesive and our core strength continues to be solidified as we continue to collaborate and celebrate each other. Back to my question, why are we committed to our organization? Simply, it is because for the love that we have for our culture, our people, our heritage, and our organization such as FILAMemphis. And these performers are prime examples on how to show that they care! I hope everyone have a great evening and enjoy the rest of the holiday season. Maraming salamat, Kapatid!
