Mabuhay! Our program this year is memorable for many reasons. Last year, the pandemic halted many of FILAMemphis, Inc’s activities, but that did not deter us from spreading (no pun intended) the Christmas spirit throughout the community albeit on a different platform. Pasko Sa Memphis 2020 (Christmas in Memphis) happened virtually, and it was a success. With Covid-19 restrictions easing up in June of this year, we decided to resume in-person programming, including our annual Christmas fundraising gala. The response from the Filipino-American (FILAM) community was inspiring when we first sought out performers. Tonight, you will witness 120 volunteers who are proudly performing before an audience of at least 340 guests. Another reason why you should be excited for this year’s Pasko Sa Memphis is the inclusion of all our members in the planning and implementing of the program. The program format is the brainchild of the Gen Zs, the theme is the vision of the Gen Xers and Millennials, and among the performers are the Boomers! The result? ChristMasquerade! In addition to raising funds, our main objective for this event is to unite the FILAM community, especially after an unexpected and extended hiatus. It is safe to say that we will accomplish this in this evening’s party. All that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy this wonderful evening of our culture and heritage, family and friends, and food and fun! I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Let us continue to be vigilant of our health and continue to be proud members of the FILAM community. Let’s make happy memories!
FILAMEMPHIS Happy Holidays, FILAMemphis, Inc. Community! Wow – two years. It has been two long years since we have been able to celebrate and cherish the support, love, and efforts of the FILAMemphis community in person through our annual Christmas Gala. I hope each of you will join me in taking some time to embrace this moment: a moment of bliss, laughter, and togetherness as we finally get to celebrate one another and the success of the organization. It is truly something I will never take for granted. There are no words that can capture the experiences of these past two years. I have heard and shared countless stories filled with loss, grief, and isolation. I have had to lean on my friends, family, colleagues, and peers more than I have ever had to before. These past two years have brought some of the most challenging times in my life – as a student, employee, and simply just as a person, it has been hard. With that said, I know I am not alone. The members of the FILAMemphis, Inc. Community has also suffered in the past two years – once again, many experiences filled with loss, grief, and isolation. Looking back at these past couple of years, it has been hard for every single person here and throughout the world. I say all of this because when I do reflect on the past couple of years, I cannot help but sit back and take a deep breath of gratitude. With every trial and hardship was a blessing of support and encouragement from every source. From my closest friends and family who would remind me to sleep and eat during long hours of study, to my Titas and Titos who would lift me up after a long, hard day, and to even the strangers who would simply smile at me – I am reminded of all of the good in the world. Now, more than ever, the power of people and togetherness is what this community and world needs to keep moving forward.
FILAMemphis Community, every single one of you, has the power to bring people together. A simple smile, a listening ear, supporting your leaders, or a simple kind gesture, you have the power to make a difference right here at home. A short, personal story that I believe captures the essence of FILAMemphis, Inc. is the following: when I first started Kindergarten, I was in a sea of people who did not look like me. The way others thought and talked – their mannerisms – all different. Then, my now long-time best friend, walks into the same classroom – another Filipina. It was then when I realized that everything will be okay. I share this story because it shows the comfort and relief when you are around your people – simply, the power that comes from being a person. No, they do not have to look like you or talk like you, but, people who you know will support you and catch you when you fall, people who will celebrate you in your successes, and people who accept you for who you are. FILAMemphis, this community is your people, and I encourage you to hug your loved ones a little tighter, cheer on your people a little louder, and come together to be a little stronger as a community. There is power in people, and the people include you.

In loving memory of Dr. Avelino Reyes who joined our Creator last November 23, 2021 at the age of 95. Dr. Reyes was an outstanding member of FILAMemphis, Inc. He served as the organization’s President in 1988, and as a Board Member from 2000 to 2008. In 2008, he was awarded the Dr. Federico Donato Memorial Award for his significant contribution to the organization. Dr. Reyes was a wellrespected and distinguished member of the Filipino-American community whose support and dedication to the organization contributed to its solidarity and longevity.
