Superintendent Message

From Our Superintendent A few weeks ago, I had the task of moving

my 88-year-old mother from the city she has called home for over 65 years to a senior care facility in Kirkland. When we flew out of Chicago on February 20th, it was nearly 70 degrees, and when we touched down at SeaTac it was in the 20’s and snowing.

For my mom, the world had indeed turned upside down and inside out.

That episode reminded me of what some folks must be experiencing at BCS. This venerable institution has seen significant turnover in leadership (three new principals and a superintendent in three years), buildings that have served students for more than sixty years may soon be history, STEM is displacing more traditional vocational classes, and changing demographics means a more diverse student population.

But change can be a good thing. My mom will now get three prepared meals a day, housekeeping and a host of activities from which to choose.

And she gets to be near her favorite son. BCS students now benefit from teachers inspired by the Teaching for Transformation process, access to a growing array of technology tools, and God willing, those in the class of 2021 and later will spend their time at Clyde Hill in substantially improved facilities.

In the pages that follow you can see the impact of a rich heritage of Christian education in the stories of our alumni and the listing of our endowed scholarships. You will learn how Teaching for Transformation promises to refresh the vision of our founders. You will read about the success of our current students on courts, the stage and in life. Woven together, these vignettes illustrate the story of BCS, a school anchored in building deep relationships with God and prepared to meet the challenges before us.

Volunteer Highlights

My Trip to Covenant Academy Madelyn Miller - 6th Grade THREE POINTS ELEMENTARY Going to Covenant Academy in Cypress, TX was an amazing experience for me to see real work, real needs, and real people in action. It also helped me understand that we can show God’s love to everyone, even to people living in other states. We can still make a difference in the lives of others.

My sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Wybenga-Walters said to us, “I have a friend I did a missionary group with a while back, named Nancy, whose daughter goes to a small Christian school like ours outside of Houston, TX called Covenant Academy. Their school was flooded badly by Hurricane Harvey.” So, we decided to write letters of encouragement to them to help them get back on their feet.

We got to work on writing our letters to our new pen pals. The day we started our letters, it felt amazing that God was pointing us in the direction to help others even so far away. We also got an email from Nancy asking if we might be able to help replace books for her daughter’s 3rd grade classroom library. So, we gladly said yes. Our class gathered books that they had lost in the flood waters. I can’t imagine losing the books that we use daily in our classroom. I thought about how hard it must be for the students at Covenant Academy.

I was born in Texas, and my grandparents live very close to Covenant Academy. My mom made the connection, so we made a quick decision to fly to Texas to visit the school and deliver our pen pal letters and the books in person. It worked out perfectly! We stayed

with my grandparents and headed for the school the next day. Driving to the school I saw the houses in my grand-parent’s neighborhood. I saw houses that were abandoned and that needed to be torn down, beat up houses, and people living in campers in their drive-ways.

This made me realize how blessed we are to have homes that are standing; we’re blessed to not be living on the streets and to have a school to go to in the morning. Even though this hurricane was so long ago and so much has happened since, there are people still struggling to get back on top of things.

When I got to the school I didn’t know what to say. I was a little nervous to talk, but I knew that God would help me say something encouraging. I went to the thirdgrade class to deliver books, then to the fifth and sixth classrooms to deliver letters. When I stood in front of each class I related to the verse the Head Master kept saying, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fires you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Isaiah 43:2.

After listening to the verse I felt much calmer. I told the students how much Bellevue Christian cared about them and we wanted them to feel God’s love from all the way in Washington State.

It felt so amazing to be an important part of God’s work.

I could feel God’s love as I walked into those classrooms and when they opened their letters it was heartwarming to see the smiles on their faces. I loved being a part of this and hope that I can do something similar again to be a servant worker of God. I learned that even the smallest works from us can bring great joy to others. I was so proud to represent my class and the students at Bellevue Christian.

Core Curriculum

Teaching for Transformation The work of Teaching for Transformation (TfT) continues to take root at BCS and the stories that are unfolding are beautiful and compelling!

Through our training this year, preschool-12th grade teachers have implemented the three core practices of TfT: Storyline, Throughlines, and Formational Learning Experiences (FLEx).

6th grade classroom Storyline

Storyline, the first core practice, is each individual teacher’s invitation to students to engage in God’s big story through their daily learning and the way they interact together. For example, sixth graders at Mack have invested in the Storyline: Love Lifts Up; within their content and daily interactions, they look for examples of God’s love lifting people up and ways they can express His love that lifts up.

The second core practice is the ten Throughlines:

God Worshipper | Idolatry Discerner | Beauty Creator Creation Enjoyer | Earth Keeper | Community Builder Order Discoverer | Justice Seeker | Community Builder | Image Reflector The Throughlines give teachers and students guidelines for how to live as people of God’s big story.

Students are introduced to the language of Throughlines and given opportunities to practice them in FLEx, the third core practice of TfT. FLEx are the opportunities where students unpack their learning in the context of doing real work to meet the real needs of real people. For example, High School Spanish classes are currently involved in a FLEx that takes them out of their classroom to a local elementary school that hosts a bilingual Spanish program where they volunteer as lunch and recess buddies.

This “real work” has them practicing their Spanish skills in the context of real needs and real people. Students are invited to practice their Spanish while practicing being community builders and image reflectors. As we grow and unpack the core practices of Storyline, Throughlines, and FLEx we’re also continuing to unpack the idea of becoming peculiar.

Peculiar.

Students share examples of love lifting up

Core Curriculum

That’s a word that grabs attention, and perhaps not exclusively positive attention.

Peculiar could connote strange, weird, odd…maybe even off-putting. Why would Teaching for Transformation choose that word? Why would BCS choose follow?

1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”

King James Version translates the phrase, “a people for his own possession,” as “a peculiar people.” Award winning author, speaker and professor of theology, James K.A. Smith builds on this translation in his work on education. Smith writes, “The primary goal of Christian Education is the formation of a peculiar people—a people who desire the Kingdom of God and thus undertake their life’s expression of that desire.”

As we unpack the work of TfT, we are becoming more and more convinced that peculiar is an apt descriptor for someone following Christ. We’re further convinced that our world longs for and needs peculiar—our world desperately needs something different.

Students share written examples of love lifting up

Something that stands out. Something set apart.

Something a little unexplainable. Something refreshingly outside of the norm.

In a world of people trying to build lives on personal glory and contentment, perhaps peculiar is the right word for those who choose to pour themselves out for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven, choosing to become humble servants in the world in order to be great in God’s story (Matthew 20:26).

In a world that seeks personal fulfillment above all else, perhaps being peculiar means to step outside of oneself and one’s own desires, believing that extending beyond oneself brings deeper fulfillment, joy, contentment, and even learning. Maybe choosing peculiar means choosing to put others before self, in spite of discomfort. Even at personal cost. Even when it’s a little odd. Peculiar can mean odd, weird, outside of the norm. Peculiar also means belonging exclusively to.

Bellevue Christian School’s mission is to prepare young people to live faithfully for God. A choice to live faithfully for God is a choice live exclusively for God. Perhaps peculiar is what we’ve been after, all along.

Athletics

Athletic Highlights Boys and Girls Cross Country - The BCS boys’ team were the sportsmanship winners for the Nisqually League. Senior Jared Donne was the district champion and finished on the podium at the state meet in Pasco finishing in 7th place overall in the 1A classification.

First Team All-League – Jared Donnel. Second Team All-League – Josh Clark.

Football – 4-3 in Nisqually League (3rd Place) 4-6 overall record. The BCS football team finished the season strong winning 4 out its last 5 games and finishing in 3rd place in the Nisqually League. The BCS team was the Sportsmanship winner for the League.

Senior Brandon Parsons was named Co-Defensive MVP of the Nisqually League. First Team All-League – Cade Peterson (WR), Brandon Parsons (OL), Ike Schneidler (P). Second Team All-League – Mick Larsen (QB), Sam Tefft (DL), Mark Postma (LB).

Girls Soccer – 14-4-1 – Nisqually League Champions, 2nd Place Districts, State Qualifier. The BCS girls soccer team went undefeated in the Nisqually League winning the league title and placing an impressive 2nd place in the Districts. The girl’s team qualified for the state tournament and lost a tough game to Seattle Academy who went on to finish in 4th place in state.

BCS coach Paul Adams was Nisqually League Coach of the Year and Emilie Groeschel was the Goalkeeper of the Year. First Team All-League – Rylee Reese, Camryn Rogers, and Jasmine Hathaway. Second Team All-League – Celine LaBossier, Catherine Dugoni, Annie Whitton, and Olivia Fick.

Volleyball – 12- 7 overall record, 2nd place Nisqually League, 2nd place Districts, state qualifier. The BCS volleyball had a great fall finishing in second place in the Nisqually League and second place in Districts qualifying for the state tournament in Yakima. First Team All-League – Molly Olson and Cora ter Kuile.

Bethany Drake - BCS Teacher And Olympic Hopeful

Teacher Profile

While BCS Art Teacher Bethany Drake is often found inspiring creativity in a classroom of students, you can also find her at the track field, training to compete for the 2020 Olympics.

Drake grew up playing sports. Ten years of softball consumed the majority of her elementary and middle school years, and in her sophomore year, Bethany’s career in athletics took a shift when she started track for the first time – “I didn’t want to run, so javelin felt like a natural transition.”

She walked on to the track team at Western Washington University in Bellingham to compete in javelin collegiately. “It really wasn’t until my junior year when I went to the Olympic Trials that I realized I wanted to compete Olympically. I remember watching the finals and realizing that I belong here and I can do this.”

Upon graduation, Ms. Drake continued to pursue competing in javelin.

TEACHING AND TRAINING While her passion for javelin grew stronger and stronger, so did her love for teaching: “Since senior year in high school, I knew that I wanted to be an art teacher. I love art and want others to love it as well. Teaching provides a nice balance for continuing to train. I absolutely love it.”

With an already time consuming teaching schedule, Drake continuously faces the struggle of balancing Olympic level training with full time work. “The biggest challenges are having enough time and energy for both fields. Post-grad competing is very independent – there’s a lot of figuring things out on your own. I’ve been really blessed with a couple mentors who have helped me with the logistics of things, as well as the ability to work out at Bellevue Christian School, and the support from Mark DeJonge and Mike Olson.”

THE OLYMPICS With the ultimate goal of the 2020 Olympics, the goal this year is to make the top 8 in the US championships and throw 60 meters. She also plans to train and compete abroad in Europe this summer.

She coached a group of BCS students in javelin during the off-season. We are excited to see them grow in this sport too!

Visual and Performing Arts

Fall 2017 ARTS Highlights

rocking Broadway and the theatre world since the 70’s, and this new version has all the great songs and characters with some updated tweaks and references for today’s audiences.

Studio Art

Theatre classes at BCS are growing. The junior high theatre class puts on two productions each semester (including the recent fairy tale comedy “The Princess And The Porcupine”), and the high school has two new classes: Introduction to Theatre, and Advanced Theatre – Stagecraft, both of which are great opportunities for students to learn and be involved in BCS theatre.

This fall BCS students at both the junior high and high school level partook in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, which is a national competition that recognizes exceptional artistic and literary talent.

Senior, Jean Juan, received a Gold Key Award on her sculpture “Spurious Shell”; this is the highest honor that a student may receive.

Senior, Parker Burbridge, received an Honorable Mention Award on his photo “At A Crossroads.” These works were on display at Cornish College of the Arts.

Music Elementary Band News: The 5th and 6th grade bands for Mack and Three Points was combined for their winter concert “Music, Music, Day & Night”.

The concert will feature full band compositions such as Midnight Sky, Midnight Madness, and Gizmo!

Students are excited to use the beautiful new staging to share their gifts of music.

Squeeze out the Hurt, Mara Staal

Daisy Pan, Mara Staal, and Victoria Sun all received Honorable Mention awards on their work in the Scholastic Art Awards.

Theatre The fall play, “ANON(ymous) was a powerful experience on stage and in the audience as the mashup of “The Odyssey” and modern-day refugees gave insight into the experience of Odysseus from literature and the experience of many people we read about in the headlines of today’s newspapers.

This winter’s student-produced theatre production of the Broadway comedy “Fools” was a success!

Led and directed by BCS senior, Savannah Cullen, and involving the talents and abilities of high school cast and crew, the show had the audience laughing throughout and standing with applause at the end!

The spring musical April 26, 27 and 28 this year is “Godspell”, the 2012 version.

Junior High School Concert Band

JH Band: The 7th and 8th grade band performed at the Eastshore Middle School Solo and Ensemble Festival at Maywood Middle School in March.

There are 9 small ensembles which were featured on the Evening Concert “Bach in Time” also in March.

Visual and Performing Arts Ava Kimmel from BCS took honors in both the Soprano and Mezzo Soprano Competition. She will be heading to the WMEA/WIAA State Solo and Ensemble Competition on April 26 in Ellensberg, WA. Congratulations Ava!

James Gibson

Three high school choral students, Christopher Murray, Grace Campbell, and Meg Sweeney, auditioned and were accepted to sing with the All State Honor Choirs in Yakima over the long weekend in February. They joined other exceptional singers for 3 days of intense rehearsal and one amazing concert in Yakima, WA, at the Washington Music Educators Association Annual Conference. The concert occurred in February.

8th grade stand out: James Gibson was selected to perform with the Junior All State Band in February at the WMEA conference. James is an accomplished french horn player and performs as a regular member of the Bellevue Youth Orchestra.

High School Band and Choir News: The jazz ensemble participated in the Eastshore Music Region Annual Jazz Festival held at Bellevue Community College in November. Jazz bands from area school districts came together to share music, receive professional adjudication and participate in clinics. We were all inspired to move in our celebration of the Lord through the Jazz idiom.

High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble

Symphonic wind ensemble and jazz ensemble will embark on their biennial tour on April 2, 2018.

Destinations include Spokane Valley, Missoula, Kallispell, and home. They will perform at retirement homes and schools, and receive clinics at Whitworth University and the University of Montana.

This is an exciting time to refine musical skills, develop relationships and serve the Lord and others through music.

Donors boost the sound, lighting and visibility of performing groups.

High School Concert Choir

High school choral and instrumental students performed for the district Solo and Ensemble Competition/Festival in January at Bellevue Community College. Professional adjudicators listened to their performances, evaluated them and sent some to go on to the state competition.

It is such an improvement to our program to have new acoustic panels, staging that elevates to students and lights that allow the audience to see us. We are extremely grateful to all the donors and administrators who made this happen.

International Program

International Program Update

This school year has been full of fun and exciting changes, challenges, and victories for our International Program. We started with the hiring of a new International Student Program Coordinator, Vicki Britton. She brings her energy, passion, and a love for the Lord that she is eager to share with our international families.

This Christmas season we had two separate events for the international families at our Three Points and Clyde Hill campuses. The events were very well attended and we were able to eat, fellowship, and share the story of God’s gift to us through the birth of Jesus Christ. We have made an emphasis on connecting with our international students and families this year and we are continuously seeing the fruits of these relationships.

We invited speakers, Rossana and David Lin, to the school to talk to both domestic and international students and parents about “Parenting Third Culture Kids.” This was a terrific

opportunity for our multicultural community to get together and build relationships.

On the student side, in addition to our normal interactions with the junior high school, we have partnered with pastors and Young Life leaders in our local, multicultural, church community to meet student needs. Mentor groups have been formed for the boys and girls at the junior high school, and are meeting during lunch at least once a month. This is an opportunity to fellowship with the students, allow them to communicate their needs, and build skills to feel more comfortable in their surroundings.

We enjoyed our Spring Festival Chinese New Year celebration where our international students invited domestic students to join them for a “hot pot” dinner that was prepared by our international students themselves. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to See The Story, Join the Story, and Live the Story!

Architect Turned Author – A Transformation Story

Alumni Christopher James (‘98) was pursuing a degree in architectural engineering when he began to feel a call from God that would change the course of his life forever.

As a physics major at Wheaton College, James had always been passionate about building and the creative arts, so architecture was an easy career path to follow. However, during his time at Wheaton he traveled to Kenya to visit friends of his roommate. What James experienced during this trip blindsided not only him, but his life plans; the harsh realities of poverty he saw first-hand put his own personal ambitions in a new light.

“Suddenly, building extravagant buildings for wealthy people began to lose its appeal. I could probably do what I was planning, but that wasn’t appealing to me anymore.”

Mission, ministry, and discipleship quickly became his focus, and after three and a half years of studies, James was accepted to Boston University in the PHD Practical Theology Program. This allowed him to pursue a life of teaching the bible and doing missions work.

As James’ career and calling moved onward, he went on to work as an assistant professor of evangelism and missional Christianity at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. There he leads the Master of Mission and Discipleship degree. After completing his studies, James began to revise his dissertation and pursued turning it into a now published book, Church Planting in PostChristian Soil: Theology and Practice.

James writes in his book, “In my doctoral work, this is what I studied - Seattle is a very post-Christian place, one of the most un-churched cities, dubbing it the “none” zone. I wanted to tell the story of faith in Seattle as a scholar. The book is based on observations and interviews regarding 105 churches that I could confirm in Seattle.”

James, his wife Lindsay, and their two children Virginia (2nd grade) and Luke (4 years old) live in Dubuque, Iowa. Lindsey, an ordained Presbyterian minister, has been running for the Iowa State Representative in this current election cycle (https://www.lindsayforiowa. com/), as well as previously serving as a Chaplain at Endicott College.

Virginia loves to rock climb, and Luke is currently enrolled in PreKindergarten.

Where in the world are they now?

Sarah McIntyre, ‘93 Sarah McIntyre is a British-American illustrator and writer living in London, England. Graduated in 1999 from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in Russian and a minor in history of art, Sarah went on to earn a masters degree in illustration from Camberwell College of Arts in 2007.

Sarah has written and illustrated over 20 published books has been awarded the following: the Independent Bookshop Week Book Award in (2016), UKLA Book Award (2015), the Leeds Graphic Novel Award in (2011), Sheffield Children’s Book award for Best Picture Book and Overall Winner for her illustrations (2010), and the Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award (2010). Sarah is also the Ambassador for the Read for Good organization which helps schools to run fundraising “Readathons” to buy new books and book trolleys for children in hospitals while investing 20% back into buying books for school libraries.

David Dean, DDS, MD, ‘02 David Dean received his bachelors in science in cellular, molecular, and developmental biology from the University of Washington in 2006, and went on to pursue his masters of science in dentistry in oral medicine. While working as a resident dentist at the University Of Washington School Of Dentistry, Dean is also the graduate program director and acting assistant professor in the Department of Oral Medicine.

In addition to Dean’s career, he is also a diplomat on the American Board of Oral Medicine, a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeon’s Edinburgh. Dean has won the Bruce R. Rothwell Distinguished Teaching Award, 2016 (UWSOD’s highest teaching honor, 2016), was the Commencement Speaker for the Investiture of Hoods Ceremony (UWSOD, 2016), and was a Seattle Met “Top Dentist”. (Oral Medicine, 2017 & 2018) David and his wife, Brittany, live in Seattle.

Katie Weber, ‘09 At a young age, Katie Weber spent her summer vacations at her father’s office at Microsoft, where she was inspired by the creativity of the ever-changing marketing industry. From this, Katie pursued a degree in Communications at Seattle Pacific University. Katie now works at Rational Interaction here in Seattle as a Client Development Executive. Katie has honed her expertise at a variety of agencies throughout the West Coast specializing in strategy and client development for cutting edge technology companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce.

In addition to her agency work, Katie also sits on the board for Women in Digital, a female-focused group that strives to connect women on the tech and digital side of marketing. Katie hopes to work one day as a marketing consultant for non-profits throughout the Northwest, helping drive social impact and change.

Tiffany Parks, ‘95 Tiffany is a writer living in Rome, Italy, with her husband, Claudio, and twoyear-old son, Aurelio. She has recently released a book titled Midnight in the Piazza, an art mystery for middle grade (ages 8–12) readers set in contemporary Rome and published by HarperCollins. She also heads the editorial department of Where Rome magazine. In her spare time, she shares her passion for Rome’s history, art, customs, and curiosities on her blog, The Pines of Rome, and leads tourists on private walking tours of Rome. She can also be heard weekly on her podcast, The Bittersweet Life, an unscripted conversation with her co-host Katy Sewall about the joys and challenges of the expat experience.

Tiffany recently appeared at Town Hall Seattle for a live taping of her podcast followed by a book signing, and at Island Books for a reading and book signing. She spoke with students at the Three Points and Clyde Hill campuses during her trip.

Homecoming 2017 In December we welcomed back alumni, parents, and family for the 2017 Alumni Homecoming Basketball game!

Many alumni filled the Commons to see former teachers, catch up with fellow classmates, and grab some Chik-Fil-A while the Vikings played a phenomenal game in the gym. The unforgettable night included a jump rope performance by Hot Dog USA (including students Lexi Bold and Emily Schroeder), and a performance of the National Anthem on the trumpet by alumni Courtney Porter (currently studying at the University of Washington).

These funds provide the long-term investments necessary to ensure the success of BCS. Many alumni and parents of alumni feel their time at Bellevue Christian School had an important influence in their lives and, in an effort to provide that same opportunity for others, create an endowment. The Bellevue Christian School “Family of Funds� includes over a dozen named endowments (listed below). Most funds provide valuable tuition assistance for students; others support school programs such as performing arts or training/professional development for faculty and staff.

In Memoriam JEAN FRIDDELL (August 17, 1928 – January 9, 2018) Jean Friddell was called to teach French at Bellevue Christian High School and remained there for 27 years. She earned a Master’s Degree in Computers in Education and was a missionary for four summers, teaching Advanced English at Lithuania. Jean served as a deacon in her church. She enjoyed traveling and took eight groups of high school students for a month at a time on educational tours. She traveled to 39 countries including Papua New Guinea, living among the indigenous people. Jean loved sports: snow skiing, water skiing, big game hunting on horseback, sailboat racing, and ping pong. Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, and playing cards with her friends at Westley. “I (Mr. “B”) remember piloting a speed boat while she water skied standing on a stool while mounted on a disc. While at BCS she was always two steps ahead of being punctual with hand-outs, grades, and lesson plans. She will be greatly missed here but is now enjoying her Savior.”

Jean was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by her children Tom, Jerry, Jenny and Twyla, and six grandchildren.

Parents are busy sharing photos from athletics and arts, campus projects, events and communicating with each other. The app is available to all parents of currently enrolled students.
