y time as Interim Superintendent of Bellevue Christian School is coming to an end. I’m pleased that Kevin Dunning has been called to be the eighth superintendent of BCS. I am hopeful that the last two years have helped to prepare the way for Kevin and for the next season of the school. One of my key initiatives was to remind us of the basics of a Christ-centered education by emphasizing the tenets of the Educational Confession that undergird everything about the school. I’ve called every employee to the work of discipling students. Custodians, office and teacher assistants, coaches, bus drivers, and of course, teachers are all called to be “living and holy sacrifices, acceptable to God.” We are “transformed by the renewing of our minds to prove what the will of God is” (Romans 12:1-2). In other words, we are living proof to our students of a safe and holy God – a God of grace and truth.

I want to thank the School Board for the opportunity to serve God and the school these past two years. I also want to thank parents who entrust their children to the nurture and care of Bellevue Christian School teachers and staff. Your partnership has been evident through both the good and the difficult times these past two years. And finally, I want to thank BCS colaborers. I have seen first-hand the work you do and the sacrifices you make to faithfully serve at BCS. I have witnessed your “work heartily done as unto the Lord.” Your love for students and dedication to Christ have been an example to me, and I am grateful to God and to you for allowing me to serve as your leader. Bellevue Christian School will always have room for improvement, but I believe the essence of the school, its heart and soul, remains in the right place – centered on the Lord Jesus. My prayers will always be with you as you continue this important work.

Board Update: Trusteeship Committee

O

ver the past year the BCS Board worked with Interim Superintendent Tim Krell to reinstate the Trusteeship Committee which is charged with providing active, ongoing, and focused support to activities deemed critical to maintaining the spirit, legacy, and founding principles of Bellevue Christian School. The charter of this group, which is comprised of two current Board members, two BCS Corporation members, and the Interim Superintendent, covers four areas:

Legacy of Leadership

Develop and maintain the “body of knowledge” which embodies the BCS Educational Philosophy & Worldview

Accountability for Board member selection process and implementation

Legacy of Learning Disseminate the BCS Educational Philosophy to all stakeholders: administration, faculty, staff, parents, students, board, community at large

Legacy of Growth & Change Taking on of special initiatives as assigned by the Board to preserve and extend the BCS legacy in the context of the school’s heritage

The group’s focus this year has been on activities specifically directed toward ensuring that the school has not drifted from its stated mission and to provide a forum for discussion of other topics including Board member selection criteria and open versus closed (mission-appropriate) admissions, among others.

Kevin Dunning New Bellevue Christian School Superintendent

T

he Board of Bellevue Christian School is pleased to announce that Mr. Kevin Dunning will become BCS’s next Superintendent.

Bringing over 35 years of experience as an educational leader, Kevin most recently served as the Head of School for Hong Kong International School, a pre-eminent international school of 2,600 students on two campuses. Prior to that, he was the Executive Director of Faith Lutheran School in Las Vegas for eleven years, the largest Lutheran school in the United States and the largest private school in Nevada. Under his leadership, Faith Lutheran saw a threefold increase in student enrollment, dramatic improvement of physical facilities, and the implementation of a one-to-one laptop program.

Kevin’s duties as full-time Superintendent will begin July 1, although he will be on-campus starting May 1 for orientation and transition to BCS. Tim Krell will remain as Interim Superintendent until June 30.

Chair of the Search Committee Joel Hussey shared, “We are thankful that God has called Kevin to Bellevue Christian School as its new leader and are faithful that He will bless this new partnership.

We are excited to begin the journey that God has in store for BCS.” Board Chair Scott Lampe also commented, “Kevin’s proven track record combined with his understanding and support of the foundational principles of Bellevue Christian School give us a leader equipped to successfully sustain the school’s mission and strong spiritual grounding while meeting the educational challenges of our ever more rapidly changing world.”

- Nebraska honored him with its Master Educator Award. The following year, Concordia University - Chicago awarded him with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his service to education.

“Bellevue Christian School has a long history of providing an excellent Christian education and it is an honor to be selected as the next Superintendent,” Kevin shared.

“I am excited about partnering with this community of believers in developing a renewed vision for the school and working with the students, faculty, staff, and Board to see it fully realized. I am certain God will bless our work together.”

Kevin’s wife Mary was called to her heavenly home in February of last year after a fierce battle with cancer. They were married for 35 years. His daughter, Maggie, lives in Michigan, and his son, Jeremy, lives in Kansas. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing and reading. He is thrilled about becoming a first-time grandparent in late summer.

Laura Coverstone and Ed Poff of JobfitMatters Executive Search assisted the Search Committee throughout the process and affirmed Kevin’s strong fit for this important role: “There is a very clear pattern of faith integration in Kevin’s achievement history, alongside his spiritual understanding of how to disciple young people. He is attuned to the importance of shaping lives and he initiates activities and programs which bring people together and develop them as a Christian community.”

My Journey with BCS Interim Superintendent Tim Krell Looks Back On His Time at Bellevue Christian School and Looks Forward to The Future

“Being an interim is to do what needs to be done to get ready for the next person. It involves taking time to refresh an organization and make sure it’s on track with its mission.”

BACK IN THE BCS COMMUNITY Despite feeling new in the role of Interim Superintendent, Mr. Krell was no stranger to Bellevue Christian School.

“I enjoyed being back in this community and helping it keep its footing in what the essence of BCS is,” said Krell.

“It’s easy for an organization over time to lose that sharp focus on its vision and mission, but it was easy for me to pick up that ball since I’ve been around the school for a number of years…I fell right into that, it was easy for me.”

Tim Krell, Interim Superintendent of BCS, had a clear calling to step in during a time of transition at Bellevue Christian School. He knew that his personality and goals were in line with the BCS philosophy of education. What he wasn’t as clear about was all that would happen in those two years. Now, as he prepares to end his time as Interim Superintendent, he looks forward to a new chapter in life.

Then, the unexpected happened. The Superintendent Search committee, after much prayer and deliberation, felt God leading them to not hire a new Superintendent for the 2015-16 school year, but instead start the process over and ask Mr. Krell to remain on for another 12 months.

Tim had mixed feelings but accepted the call. Looking back, he believes it was God leading them through that decision.

“I had never been a Superintendent, so the scope of the job was pretty new to me,” said Krell. “I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the academic side of things and working with teachers was very comfortable for me. But monitoring things like budgets and Operations and helping to guide the work of the Advancement and Development department…I had never really navigated that (before). I was very thankful that we had good people in those roles to lead the way.”

“I think it’s worked out; I think the school has benefitted from a longer transition in this case,” said Krell. “I think it was good for everybody to have another year to prepare for the next leader.”

WHAT’S NEXT Mr. Krell has left his mark on BCS by helping us through new administrative staff and changes, among many other ups and downs along the way. Now, he looks forward to a new adventure – his 40-year dream of a bicycle trip across the country will finally come true.

Tim Krell: My Journey with BCS “It’s sort of just a bucket-list thing…” said Krell. He began training in January and plans to begin his trek in Anacortes, WA on July 25. He will set out with five other riders, including some BCS staff & alumni parents, as well as his his long-time friend Tom Bilbro. Bilbro and Krell graduated from Seattle Pacific University together and are fulfilling the goal they’ve had all these years.

“We’re going to be able to go on the trip together that we dreamed about 40 years ago.”

ON RETIRING This summer is also monumental in that it marks Krell’s “more official” retirement. After being asked the question of whether this was his official retirement, he hesitated and said, “In one regard, Christians don’t retire, they just do something different with their time – they enter service of some different kind. That’s sort of my vision of what happens next…there’s always work to do.”

SAYING GOODBYE As Krell wraps up his time as Interim Superintendent, he has hope that the new Superintendent will join the community as a co-laborer in what the faculty and staff do here for the parents and the students. More than anything, Krell wants the new Superintendent to know that “the community is solid and robust and it’s a central part of what makes (us) Bellevue Christian School.

“We want to nurture each and every student in a growing relationship with Christ. That is done every day through every class, every classroom, every interaction,” said

Krell. “So if I could pass on the mission to the next person in a way that helps them grasp it, in a way that helps them to see and understand that, that would be my biggest desire.” Krell has hope that the new Superintendent will have a patience and desire to learn about and understand Bellevue Christian School.

‘THE MAIN THING’ As he leaves, he wants the community to keep in mind how important it is to focus on ‘the main thing’ – that being Christ. Ultimately, he wants us to remember that our hope is in Christ – our hope for our lives, for our children, and for the institution of Bellevue Christian School all comes from Christ.

“If we can maintain that frame of mind and frame of heart, it doesn’t mean life will be smooth, but it means there is a hope and a peace that passes all understanding,” said Krell.

Krell stands at a crossroad; it’s the end of the road for him as Interim Superintendent of BCS and we wish him the best as he hops on his bicycle and heads down the road to retirement!

Thank you Tim Krell for your service and Christ-like leadership for the past two years at Bellevue Christian School. We wish you the best in your retirement and look forward to following your journey across the country this summer!

Welcome, Tony Bylenga!

THREE POINTS ELEMENTARY WELCOMES NEW PRINCIPAL We are very excited to introduce you to the next principal at Three Points Elementary, Tony Bylenga.

Tony has most recently served as principal of Delta Christian School just over the border in British Columbia. Prior to this, he served for 10 years as the elementary and middle school principal of 430 students at Calvin Christian School in Escondido, California. He has significant teaching experience in primary and intermediate levels of elementary school. In addition, he has experience working with elementary international student programs in several elementary schools. He received his B.A. from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa and his M.A. in Education from Governor’s State University in University Park, Illinois.

Tony’s wife of 36 years, Evelyn, is a former teacher and presently works as a pastel artist. Their three adult children, Peter, Mark, and Katie are all married and live in the Northwest along with three grandchildren. In his spare time, Tony enjoys fishing, reading, gardening, and hiking.

A team of ten staff and parents worked together to provide feedback and counsel for this hiring decision. Several open houses will be planned in the fall where you will be able to meet Tony and welcome him to the Bellevue Christian School community.

Flynnvitational MARCH 31, BCS FLYNN FIELD BCS hosted Bear Creek and Port Townsend as they competed in the 8th Annual Flynnvitational on Thursday, March 31. The summer-like weather proved for a perfect setting for this year’s event. The Vikings took home both boys and girls team victories.

The field is named for Robert K. Flynn, a founding BCS Board member who passed away unexpectedly in March 1965. Gifts made to the school in his honor were designated toward the development of the field on the west side of the school grounds, and subsequently named “Flynn Field.” The Flynnvitational got its start eight years ago when inclement weather cancelled another meet.

The only option to save that meet was for it to take place on Flynn Field, and now it has become a yearly event.

Spotlight on Speech BCS ELEMENTARIES CHALLENGE IN SPEECH Students in 1st - 6th grades, at both the Three Points and Mack campuses participated in Spotlight on Speech on March 28-30. Spotlight on Speech is a special opportunity for BCS elementary students to develop and practice their public speaking skills in front of an audience while being evaluated by a panel of judges. Selected students go on to participate in an interscholastic speech event.

Fifth Graders Experience Outdoor Education Trip to IslandWood

Lessons from

D

o you enjoy learning about the amazing environment we inhabit here in the Puget Sound area? Our fifth graders certainly do – in a very hands-on way! A real highlight at BCS is the Outdoor Education trip to IslandWood on Bainbridge Island. Each year, fifth grade teachers and parent chaperones from Three Points and Mack Elementaries accompany the students for a four-day, three-night adventure.

The trip starts with a bus and ferry ride over to IslandWood’s beautiful 255-acre learning center.

While there, our students learn important lessons about botany, marine biology, art, geography, Native Americans, local history, and much more. They also learn how to work better in teams, gain an enhanced biblical perspective on God’s creation, and develop more social independence. Plus, they have tons of fun!

As their program states, “IslandWood has grown from a pilot program serving ten Seattle schools into a nationally recognized organization rooted in an integrated approach to scientific learning, self-awareness, and stewardship.” The center employs professional staff and also provides opportunities for graduate students at the University of Washington to share their expertise.

Teacher Julie VanderLaan says, ““I love the hands-on learning that takes place at IslandWood. The students get experiences with investigations, nocturnal animals, and stewardship in the natural setting while also building community with each other.”

Teacher Brianne Diebner added: “IslandWood is the perfect place for students to practice being GodWorshipers, Creation-Enjoyers, and Earth-Keepers.

The best part is watching students come to the realization that they can be God-Worshipers outside of church, Creation-Enjoyers even at school, and Earth8 | VIKING VIEW | SPRING 2016

Biblical Integration:

A Guiding Light for Students

iblical integration has always been part of a BCS education. This year, under the leadership of Amanda Albright, Elementary Biblical Integration Specialist, and in consultation with Teaching For Transformation (TFT) developed by the Prairie Center for Christian Education (PCCE) Alberta, Canada, students at both elementary schools are seeing their work through a Christian lens in new and unique ways. Some of the principles coming out of the TFT partnership include helping K-6th grade students uncover what it means to respond to God in the following ways:

New Playground Coming in 2017!

A

fter 21 years of ensuring a happy recess for Mack students, the wooden play structure on the Mack playground that has served our community very well is needing to be replaced. The Mack students ran in this year’s Jog-A-Thon to purchase two 18-foot slides which will start the playground conversion. Next year, we will complete this project with the addition of a brand new play structure, purchased through next year’s Jog-A-Thon and the BCS Auction’s Fund-ANeed partnership.

Preschool Teacher – Mack Elementary and Preschool Campus

M

y journey with BCS began as a preschool student in the “B” hall of main campus singing songs about pussy willows. Now I’ve come full circle as I teach preschool at the Mack campus. I love how I get to be a part of helping build a firm foundation for children and expose them to what an amazing Christian community they are a part of. Each day we sing scripture to hide God’s word in our hearts. We pray and talk about how much Jesus loves us and promises to take care of us. When we explore volcanoes, design unique toilet paper tube art and scoop mud in the mud kitchen out at recess, we are learning about God and His creation. We learn to share, take turns, and use kind words that build one another up. Preschoolers even learn that they are not too young to serve others when they put together dental kits for the homeless or deliver Gatorade to our local firefighters. I cannot think of a better community than BCS to set this all-important foundation for our little ones.

Mike Olson

“

I

had a big ol’ goatee and a mullet and I wore headbands, there was chalk flying everywhere…I was kind of a show,” said BCS Junior High Assistant Principal Mike Olson as he reflected on his high school shot put days. He tried shot put in high school on a whim, and immediately he fell in love with the sport. He went on to become one of the best high school shot putters in the state of Oregon.

After receiving a scholarship for Seattle Pacific University (SPU), Olson would deepen his love for t Principal Mike Junior High Assistan the sport and his le att Se for ut Olson throwing shotp 92 understanding of 19 in ty rsi ive Pacific Un himself, which would ultimately lead to his understanding of God’s calling on his life of impacting countless students at Bellevue Christian School.

“I loved (shot put) – I think I thought about shot put (in college) more than girls,” said Olson. “I remembered all my marks and that’s what I would doodle on the side of my assignments.”

Olson experienced tremendous success as a collegiate athlete. He is currently the SPU school record-holder in the Shot Put and Discus, 2nd All-Time in the Hammer Throw.

He is a two-time NCAA Division II National Champion, and a five-time NCAA All-American in the Shot Put. At his peak, Olson weighed 313 pounds and bench pressed 500 pounds. He boasted 20.75-inch biceps, a 57-inch chest, and his diet consisted of taking in 15,000 calories a day.

For the first time, Mike Olson realized he is not defined by his athletic success. He is worth more than his marks, and he felt real love and acceptance in the hug he got that day.

“That hug gave me perspective, without saying a word.”

The perspective he gained that day has turned into a desire to not only coach but also disciple BCS Track & Field athletes today. He strives to ensure that they do not find their identity in their scores but in Christ, while learning from the process of becoming a better athlete.

“My pedigree has led to my platform,” said Olson. “But my platform is just an excuse to disciple kids with big picture stuff.”

Part of the BCS Track & Field coaching staff’s process in discipling students while coaching is to discuss various themes throughout the season. Themes include topics such as perspective, perseverance, and representation.

They teach that there are reasons behind getting better at running hurdles and dedicating yourself to “throwing an iron ball into a pile of dirt” as Olson lightheartedly describes shot put.

“All of these things transcend the sport,” Olson says of the themes and lessons they choose. “It’s so far beyond just high school, so far beyond the sport or the team or the here and now…and these are things that will stick with you long after the sport is over.”

Olson now sees his past athletic accomplishments as what has gotten him to where he is today as a coach and as God’s way of providing a way for him to disciple students in a different way on campus at BCS. “That’s the power of extra-curricular activities. There’s a different level of receptivity there,” says Olson.

Although his goatee, mullet, and headband-wearing days are over, Olson still has a love for that iron ball and pile of dirt…and the students he coaches to do the same thing.

Olson experienced great success and he began to find his identity in his results. It wasn’t until a disappointing competition that he began to realize he was not defined by his athletic ability or scores.

“The turning point was after the competition. I was so ashamed and embarrassed and disappointed,” said Olson. “I walked over sheepishly to our team’s area, and one of my teammates’ dads came over and just gave me a big hug – and it wasn’t a hug of sympathy, it was a hug of acceptance. That to me was very freeing. I had felt this burden of success but this lifted that burden.”

65 YEARS OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Bellevue Christian School had much to celebrate on Friday, April 15, at the 65th Anniversary Celebration and 40th Annual Auction! The legacy started by Al, Jr. and Joe Greene is still going strong, serving over 1,000 students across three campuses.

The event featured each decade that BCS has been in existence, from the 1950s to the 2000s, with various displays showcasing BCS history and a special video produced to tell the BCS story to a new generation (view the video at: bellevuechristian.org/about/videos/bcs-historic-timeline).

The Auction was a great success, raising over $385,000 to help us continue to provide a quality, Christian education at BCS! A huge THANK YOU to the volunteers, participants, and those who gave gifts to ensure the mission and vision continues!

SAYING GOODBYE AND HELLO Interim Superintendent Tim Krell welcomed the crowd at the event as well as helped the community recognize the faculty and staff who serve the school.

Kevin Dunning, the new Superintendent for Bellevue Christian School, created a special video which was played at this event to say hello to the community. We are thankful for what he brings to BCS and look forward to his service to Bellevue Christian School!

JH Students Get a Taste of the Universe

J

unior High students experienced the universe in a very small space – the classroom!

The goal was for students to grasp that there is something larger than themselves, the city they live in, and even their entire planet. Students are learning that we are actually quite tiny compared to everything else that exists. In order to accomplish that, a project was assigned which involved making a model of the Earth, Moon, and Sun – to scale.

The students made valiant efforts in producing the models and the results and presentations were all very interesting. Many students commented how the scale was much larger than first imagined. This is just a part of a unit they are working through of how they fit in the grand scheme of all that God has created.

“The goal is to continue to bring them into something bigger than they ever knew before,” said junior high science teacher Kenji Ulstein. “The universe cannot be fully understood.

And God is always more than we can comprehend.” Ulstein hopes students realize that the enormity of the universe is similar to the enormity of our great God.

Twelve Students Qualify for State Math 100% OF BCS REGIONAL PARTICIPANTS QUALIFY FOR STATE COMPETITION

O

n Saturday, April 23, twelve BCS students participated in the State Math Competition held at Central Washington University in Ellensberg, WA.

The competition, sponsored by the Washington State Math Council, involves a prior Regional competition which is the qualifier for competing at the State level. BCS had 12 students participate at the Regional level, and all of them qualified for State. There were a total of 350-400 students from around the state who competed at the state level that day.

“It is run almost like a track meet,” said Ken Olfert, BCS Math Teacher and Department Chair. “There are three events in which we participate: the Topical Team event, the Team Problem event, and the Know-Down.”

The Topical Team event consists of 30 multiple choice questions done in one hour, covering all high school math through Pre-Calculus and Probability. The problems are not primarily computational, but situational. The Team Problem is one problem, to which students Special congratulations to Franklin Sheng, Leon Lu write out a one-page solution. Topical Team event!

It involves problem analysis, mathematical modeling, extensive complex calculations, and answer presentation, all completed in one hour. The Know-Down is where students compete individually like in a spelling bee to answer questions orally with 15 seconds to answer.

Spring Break Tour: Bands Hit the Road!

T

hirty band students went on tour along the west coast over their Spring Break. The high school band had plans to minister to people with music as they traveled on a charter bus from our school down to Disneyland and back again. As so often happens however, God had other plans.

From the moment the bus left the school things did not go as envisioned. The group experienced lots of bumps along the way, from accommodations that changed, to sick students and a broken down bus. But we can be so proud of the caliber of our students. Everyone worked together and there was no complaining or harsh words spoken. One student said it was the best trip he had ever taken during his high school years.

The students enjoyed performing for a large, appreciative crowd as the sun set in Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco. After San Francisco it was off to California Adventure and both of the bands played beautifully at the California Adventure stage.

The highlight of the trip was the opportunity for students to go backstage at California Adventure and meet with Sal Lozano, who has worked with stars such as Paul McCartney, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, and Lady Gaga. The student musicians were provided with music to sight-read, and after a short practice it was recorded with top-of-the-line equipment. The students were even able to listen to themselves play while watching a Disney cartoon.

Beyond the music they played, the time spent playing games, talking together, and socializing was so important and lifechanging too. God was at work during Spring Break as He worked eternal truths into the hearts of students and faculty alike!

Students in Selfless Service

O

ne group of students has been displaying our value of Relevant Transformation through a partnership with a local organization called Jubilee Reach. Jubilee Reach is an organization that partners with local businesses, churches, schools, and organizations to provide support and services for those in need in our community.

These students have chosen to be a part of the mission of Jubilee Reach by waking up early to cook and serve breakfast for the women and children of Jubilee Reach once a month. Their service has occurred under the mentorship and encouragement of BCS faculty member Ann Steffen and the students’ parents.

“They genuinely want to do this together and enjoy it,” said Steffen. “They are ready at 6:00 a.m., with smiles on their faces every time.”

Steffen had coordinated past service opportunities for students with Jubilee Reach, such as Christmas gift wrapping and coat sorting. These past opportunities have built a positive relationship with Jubilee Reach that enabled this current partnership to come about.

“Because we had that relationship (with Jubilee Reach), and because Jubilee Reach was known and close to BCS, (serving breakfast) came as a natural thing to do,” said Steffen.

We are proud of these students and their response to this call to serve!

Winter Update CONGRATULATIONS MARK DEJONGE!

WRESTLING The Wrestling team finished 3rd in the Nisqually League and 9th in Regionals as a team.

Athletic Director and Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Mark DeJonge has been awarded two awards for excellence in athletic leadership.

Junior Christian Miller (pictured right) was named 1st team All League, District Champion, State Participant.

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL The Boys Basketball team finished 4th in the Nisqually League, with an 1111 overall record. They also participated in the District Tournament.

Senior Joe Lampkin (top) was named 1st team All League, and senior Dylan Parsons (bottom) received Honorable Mention.

DeJonge has been named the Nisqually All League Girls Basketball Co-Coach of the Year.

Each year, the coaches within the league vote for who should receive this award.

In addition, DeJonge has also been awarded the Nisqually League Athletic Director of the Year. The other Athletic Directors within the league also vote for this recipient and DeJonge received the honor this year.

uch like the heart of a champion, chemistry on the basketball court is nearly impossible to define with raw numbers or statistics. But it makes all the difference with regard to results on the court.

The Bellevue Christian Vikings, which are led by senior team leaders Emily VandenBrink and Jessica Berg, have the “it” factor on the hardwood. The VandenBrink/ Berg combo has played on the same team since the seventh grade. The familiarity has served the Vikings well as they’ve put together an overall record of 20-2 during the 2015-16 season. VandenBrink, who plays in the paint as the team’s center, said chemistry is the key.

“I love when Jessica scores because it makes me feel like I just scored because I like her so much. We know each other really well. We’ve played on the same team for so long and have built that chemistry where I know what she is going to do and she knows what I’m going to do. I know if I pass it to her on the left side that she is going to make it every time,” VandenBrink said.

Berg, who is left-handed, is a jack-of-all-trades type of player for the Vikings. She can hit the open jumper, drive the lane and play in the post.

“We aren’t that tall of a team, so I get to play everything.

The thing I like the most is driving to the hoop. I’m more comfortable driving to my left, but I can make a righthanded lay-up as well,” Berg said.

Berg said she not only has great chemistry with VandenBrink, but with the entire roster across the board. “We call ourselves a family. I feel like everyone

on the team all are my sisters. Emily and I both actually have younger sisters on the team too,” she said.

VandenBrink agreed with Berg’s assessment. “We understand everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. We know how to work off each other and make each other better,” VandenBrink said.

The Vikings advanced to the Class 1A state tournament in March 2015 in Yakima but fell short of placing after suffering defeats to Cashmere and Granger in their first two contests. This year the Vikings are excited to have the opportunity to potentially return to the state tournament one more time as a squad.

“Our goal is to leave everything we have out there on the court at state. We don’t want to leave with any regrets,” VandenBrink said.

Berg couldn’t agree more with one of her favorite teammates. “I think the unspoken goal is to place as high up there as we can. We definitely will play as hard as we can and whatever we get at state will be a great finish to the season for our team,” Berg said.

The Vikings will face Kings in a winner-to-state, loserout regional playoff game at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26 at Bellevue College.

Despite their valiant effort, the girls basketball team lost to Kings on February 26 which brought their amazing season to an end. The team represented Bellevue Christian School well on the court until the end.

Visual Arts Students Participate in Regional Art Show

M

ara and Annika Staal, their parents, Ors Yue, and BCS Art teacher Mrs. JoAnn Grambush attended the Puget Sound Educational Service District Regional Art Reception in Tukwila on March 16. In attending this event, art students, parents, and teachers receive inspiration from the creativity, skill, and sense of purpose on display through the arts. Students Kara Philipovich, Alex Irizarry, Clayton Gutmann, Mara Staal, and Annika Staal participated in the show this year.

In a field of over 160 art works submitted by students from schools in the Puget Sound Region, BCS students earned three awards for Excellence in Use of Media: Clayton Gutmann for Oil Pastel, “ Bold Beauty,” Mara Staal for Cut Paper Collage, “Footnotes,” and Annika Staal for Photography, “Proof of Water Retention.” Mara also received Honorable Mention from the Washington Federation of Independent Schools for her playful Cut Paper design, “Footnotes,” which she created for the imaginary band, “The Great Toes.” Congratulations and thank you to these students for representing BCS with excellence and creativity in the local community.

Theatre

T

he BCS Theatre Department held four performances of The Wizard of Oz, the spring musical this year on April 28-30. The production had a modern twist as it attempted to present the fairy tale for children in our contemporary culture. Kansas was made into more of what you might find today, and characters were re-imagined to reflect an updated characterization. Another modification was that Oz was reflected to be a real place and not just a figment of Dorothy’s imagination.

BCS students of all ages performed as Dorothy and Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tingirl (yes!), the Cowardly Lion, and of course the munchkins! Fantastic song, dance, and acting skills were on display, and audience members of all ages enjoyed the show!

T

he 5th and 6th grade bands showcased their developing skills at the February 25 concert “Music Across Time.” It featured large group arrangements and selected solos and ensembles. This was the 5th grade’s first official concert.

Junior High Band performed at the Eastshore Solo and Ensemble festival at Beaver Lake Middle School on March 12 for adjudicators, as well as at the home concert “Sands of the Sahara,” on March 21.

Pep Band finished an exciting season with the Viking Girl’s Basketball Regional tournament at Bellevue College and also performed at the BCS 65th Anniversary Celebration on April 15.

High school students in Symphonic Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed at the Eastshore Regional Music Solo and Ensemble Festival on January 23 at Bellevue College, along with nearly 1,000 other musicians from the public schools in the area. On March 22 they received excellent ratings at the Eastshore Large Group Festival at Newport High School and featured Sousa’s Liberty Bell March and Ticheli’s sophisticated arrangement of Amazing Grace. Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band completed their bi-annual tour to southern California over Spring Break. The “Story in Motion” tour included stops along the west coast and ended in Disneyland with main stage performances and studio recordings.

hoir students participated in the following contests, festivals, and concerts throughout the winter and spring: Regional Solo/Ensemble Contest – Kantorei sang and earned a 2 rating, Senior Leila Praino performed a solo.

Eastshore Choir Festival – Both Concert Choir and Singers performed at this festival and earned a “2” out of “4” rating, with “1” being the best.

Junior High Solo/Ensemble Contest – Four different groups from the Junior High Choir performed at Solo/Ensemble Contest.

High School Choral Concert – The High School choirs performed their concert called “The Beginning: A Celebration of God’s Unfailing Love.”

Junior High Choir Performance – The Junior High Choir, with Elementary music groups from Three Points and Mack, performed their concert called “10,000 Reasons: Sing Like Never Before!”

Congratulations to Isaac Lin and Truett Burnett on being accepted to the All-State Symphonic Chorus!

Senior Isaac Lin and Freshman Truett Burnett recorded an audition in October for the Washington All-State Symphonic Chorus. Their audition recordings, along with the recordings from all other Washington State schools – no matter their size, were heard by a panel of judges, who only heard the recordings. They didn’t know who the students were or where they were from. When Isaac and Truett learned that they had been accepted, they received music and practiced it on their own for a few months. Then, over February 12-14, they went to Yakima, Washington where they rehearsed and performed the choral music along with 298 other high school singers, under the direction of world-renowned choral director Elena Sharkova.

Winter Athletic Camps Build BCS Community

T

his winter, BCS had two athletic camps for our younger athletes. These camps offer great opportunities for young athletes to train with the BCS Varsity coaches and players, and join in the fun of the Junior and Senior High games.

In December, our Varsity Basketball coaches Brandon Kats (Boys) and Mark DeJonge (Girls) teamed up with the BCS Varsity team players to provide three mornings of fast-paced training and action for all skill levels. These co-ed Basketball camps were split by grade levels with 1st-3rd and 4th-6th training together. The basketball camp provided a unique environment for 45 young players to develop their skills and get age-appropriate training and mentoring in sportsmanship and teamwork. Plus, they got to do all this with their BCS buddies.

In January, the BCS Cheer camp for students in K-6th grades was a great success!

BCS Cheer coach Victoria Knight and the BCS Varsity Cheer squad joined with 24 young girls for an afternoon of cheer, dance, and gymnastic routines, culminating with a cheer performance during halftime of the Girl’s Varsity Basketball game.

These ‘in season’ camps give our future BCS Varsity Basketball players, Cheer squad, and their families an amazing opportunity to be a part of the BCS Varsity teams and community. Parents and clinic attendees had a great time at the games and enjoyed building relationships with other BCS students and their families.

Many of these young camp attendees will undoubtedly be the future BCS Varsity players and squads! We are looking forward to seeing them in future Varsity games.

From BCS to Harvard

W

hile it is true that Bellevue Christian School implements a rigorous academic curriculum to encourage students to strive for excellence in their studies, BCS also helps students realize that their selfworth does not lie in their grades or achievements. Instead, faculty and staff focus on emphasizing that self-worth and identity lies in Christ. Hanne (Olsen) Sandison (’06) is a perfect example of this balance and we are proud of how she represents not only BCS as an alumnus, but Christ in how she continues to pursue her career and strive for excellence.

Sandison first knew she was interested in law school while attending Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. During an internship she held at World Relief, a refugee resettlement organization in Minneapolis, she found herself enjoying her work with refugees but saw there was little they could do at a systemic level to help the clients she was working with. Sandison saw law school as a solution to this issue.

During a January term in 2015, Sandison worked at a detention center in Texas. “I really saw God in those women... it made me realize that the call to help ‘the least of these’ was a real and challenging commission that would sometimes be unpopular,” said Sandison. “Many of the women I met there were Christians, which made me think, if we are the Church, these are our people...I left hoping and praying that I could somehow help bridge the gap between the Church and the ‘alien’ whom we are called to welcome and care for.”

The way that her faith is inspiring her passion, and the way her passion is inspiring her goals of excellence in schooling all started during her time at BCS. “I think my time at BCS really helped me understand how to integrate my faith and learning,” said Sandison. “My interest in justice actually started at BCS while working as chapel coordinator for Senate. “Justice” was to be the chapel theme of the year and twelve years later I still find it fascinating to think and learn about how the church should be agents for justice in our world! IJM was one of our chapel speakers that year, which introduced me to their work and kind of got the ball rolling for my career.”

On May 26, Sandison will graduate from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctorate, and will move to New Orleans with her husband Kyle for a one-year clerkship with a Federal District Court Judge there.

“Being at Harvard has really shown me what a huge freedom it is to live for Christ and in His calling,” said Sandison. “In my experience, BCS really focuses on teaching us about our identity in Christ and how, while we are to strive for excellence, our identity or worth does not depend on our success or achievement.”

1996 Ana VanderPol (‘96) received her Association Montessori International (AMI) Montessori Certificiation in July of 2014, followed by her Master’s Degree from Loyola University Maryland in August 2015 in Montessori Education. She relocated to Portland, OR to work at the Portland Montessori School in September 2015.

2008 James King (‘08) has been working within the Audit practice at Deloitte & Touche in their Seattle office since September 2012. In October 2015, James accepted an internal transfer position with D&T to Dublin, Ireland. The length of the rotation is expected to be roughly two years, and he will be serving primarily technology clients while in Dublin.

James is looking forward to the experience, which will include plenty of traveling and exploring around Ireland and the many nearby countries.

James, who currently works for Deloitte & Touche in Dublin, Ireland, visited David in Cologne, Germany, where David spent the season playing for the Köln Rheinstars. David led all scorers for the game with 27 points.

Second Lieutenant Jonathan “Nate” Perkins (‘96) will be receiving his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from Midwestern University in Arizona on June 1, 2016. As a member of the U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program, Nate received a full-ride scholarship for medical school. Prior his medical education, Nate worked at Children’s Hospital Colorado while his wife, Elizabeth (Smit) Perkins (’06), completed her Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering. In December 2015, Elizabeth passed the Professional Engineering exam.

This past spring the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine recognized Nate as the 2016 National Student Researcher of the Year. In July 2016, Nate will be following in the footsteps of his father, Jonathan A. Perkins, D.O. (’78), a pediatric otolaryngologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and will be starting a 5-year residency training program in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Nate and Elizabeth are also expecting their first child in August 2016.

In Memoriam Dorothee (Haakenson) Hayman was born in 1923 to Norwegian immigrants. At age 3-4 she taught herself to play the piano. By the age of 17, she was a church organist and continued in this calling for over 60 years. At Seattle Pacific College, she studied music and education, and received her B.A. in both Music and Education. Through the organ she lifted many a soul in praise to God. In 1965, she and her husband Sid Hayman, Sr. and five children moved to Bellevue to teach 5th and 6th grade and Music at Bellevue Christian School. As one of her BCS students and a daughter, I had an insider’s view of her classroom. Always an enthusiastic lover of learning, history and reading, she inspired these in her students. At her recent memorial service, another BCS student told me how Mrs. Hayman’s passion for Jewish history continues to be an interest of hers as well.

C.S. Lewis and M. L’Engle’s books are among those Mrs. Hayman used to ignite her students with joy in reading and in life. Dorothee was driven by excellence and indeed excelled in much (except perhaps the culinary arts, which was not her love, though she improved over time). In the words of M. L’Engle, she served well the gifts which God gave to her. May they carry her before the King of all Good gifts! - Written by daughter Barbara Eirikson Don Neu, father of Jeff Neu (‘88) died in April 2016 in a bicycle accident in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Don and his wife Sandy had moved to Arizona soon after Jeff’s graduation from BCS. Our sympathies to the family as they continue to mourn the loss of a beloved father and husband.
