From Our Superintendent
A
s a Christian school we acknowledge that God entrusts us with the care and nurture of each student. Our Educational Confession states that human beings are stewards of the earth. We confess that: “We hold everything we have in trust from God.” As image bearers of God we believe that He has uniquely gifted each student, and as a result, we bring a Christ-centered focus to celebrating students’ accomplishments like those outlined in this publication. We also know that, “Only in Jesus Christ can we be restored to the place where we can take up [any] task in a way that is obedient and honoring to God.” So as we celebrate these students and their accomplishments, we also bring honor to God for His faithfulness. We recognize God’s blessings to those students who are obedient to live fully for Him in a rapidly changing world with the ability to understand, evaluate, and transform their world from the foundation of God’s unchanging values.
I want to especially thank the parents of all BCS students for partnering with us this year. We appreciate your sacrifice of time, talent, and treasure for the work of the school. Superintendent Search Update
A
s another school year fades into our memories, we first want to thank our outstanding Bellevue Christian School administration, faculty, and staff for another great year. We would particularly like to thank Tim Krell for his ongoing leadership as Interim Superintendent during this transitional period for the school. We hope that the summer brings much needed refreshment, renewal, and relaxation for the employees and for all of our BCS families.
The Search Committee, after a brief respite, has begun its preliminary planning for a relaunch of our Superintendent search. Although there may be one or two changes, we expect that the composition of the Search Committee will remain generally the same, and include a combination of board and corporation members, faculty, administrators, and parents. We have established an excellent working relationship with our search advisors, JobFitMatters (JFM), and will continue to work closely with them as we continue our process in the coming school year. JFM has continued to dialogue with potential candidates over the last couple of months and the Search Committee and JFM will be finalizing our process and timetable for posting and advertising the Superintendent opportunity, preliminary candidate review, and onsite interviews. We are confident that the experience gained through last year’s process will be of great value to both the Search Committee and JFM and as we undertake this new effort. Most importantly, we remain confident in God’s plan for BCS and know that He will call the right individual to lead our school into the future. The Search Committee and Board ask that you continue to pray for the search process. We will provide a schedule of dates and locations shortly as we continue to gather as a community in prayer for God’s guidance and blessing in seeking a new leader. Scott and his wife Ellen have two daughters, Alyssa and Meredith, who graduated from BCS in 2007 and 2012. He has held various corporate finance positions and currently serves in numerous volunteer roles including the Leadership Team at Rain City Church and Chair of the Bellevue Transportation Commission.

Bill and his wife Debbie have three children who attend BCS. Mason is a freshman, Camden a seventh grader and Nolan, a second grader at Three Points. Bill is employed as Senior Director of Strategy at Microsoft.

Ruth and her husband Bill have four children including Laura and Sarah who graduated from BCS in 2011 and 2013. Their son Daniel will be a junior and son Ryan a senior this year. Ruth is employed as an Adjunct Instructor at Seattle Pacific Universit .
Joel and his wife Christi have four children; Timothy, Allison, Michael, and Melissa who graduated from BCS in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014, respectively. Joel previously served three years as BCS Board President and is currently Chair for the Superintendent Selection Committee. He is Managing Director for Tailwind Capital LLC.

Carol served on the PTF board at Three Points for four years and was President for part of this time. She has volunteered as a mentor at Eastside Academy and currently serves at Jubilee Reach.

Steve and his wife Amy have two children at BCS. Claire is a junior and Jack a freshman. Steve works at Microsoft and has just completed a service rotation on the Westminster Chapel Elder Board.

Preschool
It’s An Exciting Time At The Mack Campus! Mack Elementary and Preschool families watched over the last year as crews moved a new portable classroom onto the already existing Mack Elementary and Preschool campus. Ground breaking was on June 19, 2014, with the portables delivered on June 24, 2014. This was a long process with digging ditches, electrical, and permitting. The Preschool teachers finally began moving in on June 12, 2015. Now the building with two classroom spaces inside will open for preschoolers ages 3-5, in September for the 2015-2016 school year.
The classrooms, which are very spacious, will be shared by about 56 children and four teachers. The new classrooms alleviate the current space crunch for both Preschool and Elementary classes.

Three Points Elementary
Reaching Out
TO HELP THOSE IN NEED ACROSS THE GLOBE
T
hree Points third graders saw a critical need among refugees in the Middle East and they took the lead in actively responding to it. The recent activities by ISIS have resulted in thousands of civilians in Iraq and Syria being persecuted and expelled from their homeland. With the guidance and encouragement from teacher Sue DeVries, the students began praying for these refugees. In addition, they wanted to do something practical to support the children and adults who desperately need water, food, clothes, medicine, and other support. As a result, they decided to link up with the organization Mercy Corps to provide relief to these refugees. After making class cookbooks, the students in both Mrs. DeVries and Ms. Albright’s third grade classes decided to donate all the proceeds from the sales of the cookbooks to Mercy Corps. Student leaders and Mrs. DeVries met with Principal Steve Kennedy, who agreed that this was an important cause and that it should be shared with the entire student body. The student representatives from Mrs. DeVries’s class gave an outstanding presentation to the whole school at chapel, and then they made and placed boxes in their classroom and in the Three Points Office for donations. The students from both classes raised $1,050 for Mercy Corps to provide relief to the Middle East refugees.

Mack Elementary
Students Donate Warm Hugs! As part of their Social Studies curriculum, first grade students at Mack Elementary campus learn about being community helpers. Students in Laura Ribera’s and Mary Pearson’s classes went on a field trip to the Woodinville Fire & Rescue station, where they asked questions about what happens when firefighter help a child who is in an emergency situation. Firefighter David Weed told the students that they will often give such a child a snuggly blanket or stuffed animal to help comfort them during that hard time. While the students were learning about being community helpers, they were also learning that they too can show God’s love to others by serving and helping their community. As the students reflected on their field trip they expressed an interest in making blankets to donate to the fire department. Each student made their own blanket with a personal hand-written note of comfort sewn on the blanket. They were able to purchase small stuffed animals and tied one onto each blanket. Firefighter David Weed came to Mack Elementary campus to receive the students’ donations. The students each hugged their blanket, prayed for the child who would be given their blanket, and then placed their blanket in the fire truck. There is great joy in serving others! Traveling Our State
Friendships begin and memories are made as 8th graders experience an epic journey
A hot dog, a duck, air boats and the Titanic
W Every year, BCS sends the entire 8th grade class out to explore the state . . . for a week . . . on purpose? Yes, it’s called State Trip and it’s fantastic! As they’ve done every May since 1981, 8th grade students headed out in May across Washington State to absorb all our state has to offer. Led by State Trip Coordinator Dawn Schmer, small groups of students and parent volunteers began collaborating in early spring to form academic agendas and social itineraries for their assigned regions to create a unique and memorable school experience. Loading and unloading vans and SUVs, logging hundreds of highway miles, and sleeping on church floors, students interacted with the people and geography of our 42nd state. Notes were written, pictures were taken, friendships were formed, and a night of celebration brought the yearly event to a close. State Trip is one of the most memorable events during a student’s BCS career, as students are stretched academically and socially during this out-of-the-box experience. Thanks to all who made this year’s experience so successful.
hat do all of the above have in common? They were actually barges, created by AP Physics students, to transport cargo and compete against each other in an end-of-the-year barge race.
Rod Wishart, BCS Physics teacher, gave the students the assignment to apply what they learned in AP Physics. The challenge was to transport cargo (gravel) down a canal (a filled rain gutter) in as little time as possible. Students were given a small DC motor and the requirement to use either a 20 oz. Gatorade bottle or a quart- sized dairy container as the essential hull component of their barge. Everything else is up to them. Scoring is based on the mass of the cargo and the time to deliver it, as well as the creativity and aesthetic nature of their design. “This year we had traditional stern-drive propeller barges, and others with the motor mounted in the front,” said Wishart. “We had air boats, a replica of the Titanic, a hot dog boat, and a duck boat. A new record time (8 feet in 1.5 seconds) was set by a barge that used its motor to cut a string which released a weight that fell from the top of a ladder and pulled the barge along the canal.” Applying what students learn in the classroom to hands-on projects such as the barge race is part of the rigorous academics that exist at Bellevue Christian School. Students are challenged in creative ways, broadening their horizons and deepening their knowledge of God’s world. SUMMER 2015 | VIKING VIEW | 11

Seniors Step Into Their Future As
T
Standing Stones he class of 2015 has made a lasting impression on the BCS community, and that was celebrated during the graduation ceremony which took place Thursday, June 18.
Sue Tameling, JH/SH Principal, reflected on the strong character of this class as she addressed them in her graduation speech. Tameling wanted to make the most of this opportunity, since this class entered junior high the same year she began her tenure at BCS. Now they face leaving together as she has accepted a new role as the high school principal at a Christian school in Chicago.
In her speech she explained the significance of “standing stones,” the tradition, custom, and practice in the Middle East of taking a stone and standing it up to mark a significant event. This practice was done so the Israelites could explain the amazing things God has done. She explained this practice as a metaphor for the impact that the class of 2015 has had on the school. “Each of you is a standing stone,” said Tameling. “And the class of 2015 is a standing stone to future BCS classes.” 12

Tameling referenced a service project back in December of 2009, when the class brought sandwiches and coffee to Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle. After the trip, some students asked permission to go back on their own and bring more sandwiches. This, according to Tameling, is one reason why the class of 2015 is a standing stone to other classes. Tameling took it a step further by challenging the class to consider what type of standing stone each person is. “When people see you or hear your name, what do they think?” Tameling challenged. “God puts us in the world
so people can see us, and through our lives, come to know Him…God is using each one of your gifts and abilities to understand, evaluate, and transform His world.” The 84 graduating seniors have plans to go in many different directions. What they have in common is that they will leave BCS together, leaving a significant impact on their teachers, the student body, and the rest of the BCS community.

T
he Theatre Department held four performances of their spring musical production of Fiddler on the Roof.
Fiddler on the Roof is an emotionally-rich story told with wonderful music that, in simplest form, is about confronting challenges in life. Nearly anyone can relate to the struggles of the main character, Tevye, a common but congenial dairyman, as he confronts the concentric circles of the challenges to his family, his livelihood, his village, his customs, his future, and most of all, to his deeply ingrained religious beliefs that hold his entire life together. This classic musical was full of heartfelt moments and favorite songs that resonate with people around the world. “As we experience the confrontations and challenges in Fiddler on the Roof, consider that this distinctly Jewish experience touches on life experience for many of us,” said Fiddler on the Roof Director Mark Ramquist. “For a few hours, we accept Tevye’s invitation to become part of Anatevka, part of the circle of Jewish families…Together we’ll smile and laugh, sing and dance, argue and yell, weep and mourn. Together we’ll respond to the confrontations of life, and find our balance as fiddlers on the roof.

his spring, choir was about more than singing the right notes. It was about rising to the challenge while serving others.
In January, students joined other choral students across the Seattle area to participate in the Solo/Ensemble Contest held at Liberty High School in Renton, WA. They performed and were adjudicated based on their solo or ensemble performances. Choir tour in April included various performances and service projects in the Seattle area. The itinerary included serving at the Rainier Valley Food Bank and Solid Ground, a Seattle community farm. They also gave an Easter concert at Operation Nightwatch, a Christian ministry serving the homeless in Seattle. On Easter Sunday they participated in the Easter service at Queen Anne Presbyterian Church. The tour continued with a visit to the University of Washington for a concert by the UW Chamber Singers and a private rehearsal lead by Dr. Geoffrey Boers, Director of Choral Activities at UW. Students also experienced a meaningful evening of worship lead by singer/songwriter Jon Van Deusen from Anacortes, WA. He shared about his life in the music industry and his continuing pursuit for God. Kathryn Carlson (‘15) was the recipient of the National School Choral Award, which recognizes the dedication and musical achievement of top choral students. In February, Leila Praino (‘16) performed as a member of the All-Northwest Women’s Chorus at the Northwest Music Educators National Convention in Spokane, WA. The BCS Music Faculty attended this conference and while there watched her perform alongside students selected from Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming.

The choirs ended the year with a school concert, “Hear Our Voices,” which featured choral renditions of “Africa” by Toto, “Past Life Melodies” by Sarah Hopkins, and “Pompei” by Bastille (arranged by the BCS Singers).

In February, band members developed their skills by participating in the Eastshore Solo & Ensemble Festival. The spring concert, entitled “A Mighty Fortress,” included a special performance of “Rhapsody in Blue” by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The performance featured guest pianist Jeff Wilken, 2006 BCS Alumni.
Junior High In their spring concert, the Junior High Band performed two combined works with the Junior High Choir, including an arrangement of “Be Thou My Vision.” Elementary bands celebrated their efforts in a final concert with Mack and Three Points bands performing together on the Greene Commons stage.

ellevue Christian School has always valued the arts. This year’s graduating class has three graduates who will major in Visual Art in college. Melissa Davis plans to attend Loyola Marymount University to major in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Art Education and a Psychology minor. She hopes to become an Art Therapist. Olivia Wu, international student from Taiwan, plans to go to The School of Visual Arts in New York to study Graphic Design. Caleb Moyer will attend Biola University in the Cinema and Media Arts program. These students have demonstrated extraordinary skill and creativity and have been faithful to the gifts God has given them. We wish them joy as they continue to pursue their creative calling.

From Our Athletic Director
W
ith a rich tradition and history of achievement in athletics, Bellevue Christian School continuously pursues excellence on the field, in the gym and beyond. Our athletics program offers student athletes an opportunity to develop the whole child—physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially.
As I look back on the 2014-2015 school year, I know that our student athletes grew in many ways; in fact they thrived. We sent our Girls Volleyball, Girls Basketball, and Boys Soccer teams to State this year, and sent students to compete at the State level for Boys and Girls Cross Country, Wrestling, Boys and Girls Golf, and Boys and Girls Track and Field. What stands out to me is the tremendous amount of support that each team receives from our BCS fans. As a community, we send these teams to compete. Whether you’re following updates on the BCS Facebook, or making the drive to cheer them on, you are showing your support, and that makes all the difference. When the BCS community comes together to support a team, they truly can be unstoppable. ill you need before or after school care options or do you want more enrichment activities for your child? BCS has a variety of Extended Day options at its Three Points and Mack campuses.
Some of the enrichment classes that are offered through-out the year include Chess, Art, Robotics, Homework Club, Musicals, Drama, Guitar, Programming, and many more. The enrichment classes usually last for 10-12 weeks.
Before and after school care options offered at Mack and Three Points are available on both a dropin and a regularly scheduled basis. Activities for after school care include creative play, arts and crafts, outdoor games, board games, hands-on projects, educational computer activities, and homework time.

When Stephen Rose was trying to persuade his Seattle-born girlfriend Jessica (Nienaber) Rose (‘02) to move to Nashville, he convinced her of some of the South’s virtues: front porches, lakes, and sweet, juicy peaches. The problem was once he moved, he couldn’t find an . To solve what the couple dubbed “the peach problem,” Rose drove to Georgia, where he grew up, and picked a peach to show Jessica what all the fuss was about. 30 | VIKING VIEW | SUMMER 2015

They decided if they were willing to drive across state lines to get these peaches, other Nashville residents could become converts. The couple married, and when they got back from their honeymoon in the summer of 2012, they started selling peaches from a truck that had been picked the day before and driven over from Georgia. They also started knocking on the doors of restaurants, offering
to supply them with Georgia peaches from Pearson Farm, a fifth-generation peach farm run by a couple who were close family friends. Stephen and Jessica were so successful that the couple started seriously considering quitting their full-time jobs. “I felt like at 26, I was signing up for the rest of my life to this monotonous daily corporate grind,” says Rose, who worked in corporate sales. “We got to talking, and said what if we give up our summers – and our summers are insane – but literally have five months to do whatever we want to do.” By the summer of 2013 they took the plunge. The business has now expanded to include 50 “peach slingers” who work across Nashville selling peaches for $8 for a three-pound bag, a team of five who sell peaches throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Indiana, and an Internet-sales business. They now sell more than one million peaches a season.

Sarah McIntyre lives in London, England illustrating children’s books. Her drawings, teaching blogs, and real life appearances bring her characters to life. From her early elementary years she was painting and drawing at BCS with Mr. Brown. You can view her internationally-renowned work at www.jabberworks.com.
2004 Jesse Hopkins lives in New York City where she enjoys working with the teams that bring Sesame Street to life for children. She works on voice-overs, interactive design, and recording sessions for the Sesame Street apps and games. Great classes with Mr. Ulstein where she studied movies for their art and content were among her BCS memories
JoJo Howie not only has gone on to become the number-one pitcher at Virginia Commonwealth University, he has lead the VCU Rams to Super Regionals this year. This kind of success in collegiate athletics is a remarkable accomplishment in itself. However, the truly noteworthy part of this story is that Howie has managed muscular dystrophy throughout his life. Howie has thrived despite his disease, and remains an effective and successful starting pitcher because of his ability to hit spots and frustrate batters. He holds a 3.05 ERA, recording a team-best 100 innings pitched with the VCU Rams.

In Memoriam 2014
Jim Buchanan, BCS parent and former Home and School Association President, went to heaven September 7, 2014 as he slept. He was on the original BCS Auction Committee. Married for 53 years to Darlene, his three children Teesha, Talani, and Troy all graduated from BCS as did his granddaughter Tiffany. His son Troy is on the executive team of Chickfil-A and yes, you can thank him for the new and awesome Chickfil-A in Bellevue.

Jack August, husband of long time past BCS bus driver, Fran August, father of Lori Taylor, Deanna McKinley, and Halle August (BCS graduates & students) and grandfather to senior Emma Taylor, passed away in June. Urgent Parent Message: Action Is Required student forms must be completed before your student can attend school or ride the bus! • Forms will be available on RenWeb ParentsWeb starting Monday, August 10. • If you have not done so already, please complete required forms for the 2015-16 school year by Friday, August 21 1. Student Medical Information 2. Emergency Contacts 3. Transportation Contract 4. Elementary Car Pool Authorization (optional) According to State Law, each students’ Medical /Emergency contact information must be updated annually (a new form every year). Please verify that your emergency contacts are up-to-date and that you have two out-of-state or out-of-area emergency contacts listed. All forms must be completed no later than the first day of school. Current Transportation Contracts need to be filled out in order for bus routes to be finalize
