Fthe EDITOR From

ive years is a very special thing to celebrate! April 4, 2024 marks the fifth anniversary of Bella Vida Santa Barbara Luxury Skincare. I am so very blessed to have had many people supporting me to get through the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur, especially my husband, Brady Schmidt.

In this issue, we will celebrate five years, highlight other incredible entrepreneurs and revel in the beginnings of Spring and the renewal it brings. April is also Autism Awareness month and we will be highlighting this important topic and celebrating people with Autism and their gifts.

While you might think that putting myself on the cover of my own magazine is arrogant and self-serving, I truly did not plan to feature myself. God sometimes works in mysterious ways and His plan is perfect and not of our making. I am actually very humbled to be able to highlight my journey, celebrate the life of my wonderful parents and welcome incredible things to come with Bella Vida Global.

I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who made this issue possible. Thank you especially to Ashkan Tabibnia for his insights, collaboration, support and friendship!

Here's to a beautiful Spring and renewing ourselves and our dreams. May you be blessed.

Much love,

Erin Schmidt, CEO and Editor in Chief

This issue is lovingly dedicated to my mom and dad, Nancy Shea McManmon and Jim McManmon. by Erin

This issue honors the five year anniversary of losing my dad, Jim, and my mom, Nancy, passed nine years before him. April 4 was my dad's birthday, so I honor his life especially in this issue.

James McManmon was a poet, writer, theologian and loved to make people laugh. His smile and laughter brought joy to so many, especially to my mom, Nancy.

My mother, Nancy Shea McManmon, had been a Catholic Nun and dedicated her life to God, singing in the church choir since she was very young. She was a singer, musician and wonderful fine artist who gave up painting to dedicate herself to her family and others. She was also a fantastic cook and baker and always had large parties for their friends so she could lavish them with incredible food, hospitality and love. Her kindness, warmth and love touched so many lives, as did my father's.

My parents were dedicated to God and Jesus, spending countless hours serving our Catholic Church and ministering to others. They also ran a group home for over 30 years to assist boys with behavioral issues to get their lives turned around so they could live at home with their own families in a happier and healthier way.

Both of my parents truly exemplified the meaning of "walking in the footsteps of Christ" giving all they had to others, God and to my brother, Sean and I.

I miss them both so very much and am so eternally grateful for all they did for me and how they raised me. Thank you, mom and dad. I will always be your "honey bunch of roses." Until we meet again.

All my love and gratitude, Erin

5 Years of Bella Vida Santa Barbara

Bella Vida Santa Barbara came from humble beginnings and has blossomed into an 18-time award-winning, international skincare brand. Founder, CEO and Organic Skincare Formulator, Erin Schmidt, reminisces about the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur, running and growing a brand during COVID shutdowns and how she is positioning the brand for major breakout success in 2024.

foreword by Brady D. Schmidt, Jr. by Erin Schmidt

After five years of running Bella Vida Santa Barbara luxury skincare, I can honestly say that the only reason I am still in business is because I decided from the start not to give up.

Bella Vida Santa Barbara began in the kitchen of my small, ocean peak apartment in East Beach of Santa Barbara, California. While I was in the middle of planning my company, my father died tragically and set my world into a tailspin. Instead of shutting down completely and postponing or giving up on my new business, I threw myself entirely into launching the company just four months later on my dad's birthday, April 4, 2019, in his honor. It was with his memory and my mom and dad's constant, unconditional love and faith that I was able to keep going no matter what came my way. I tell people this story usually once I have known them for a while so they know why I will "never give up, no matter what" because this has fueled my every step in deciding that I must succeed and will keep going until that dream is realized.

I launched BVSB almost one year exactly before COVID shutdowns began. Against all odds, my business started to expand into Asia, with retailers in Macau, Hong Kong and then Australia and New Zealand, as well as many spas, estheticians and small retailers across the USA, Canada and UK. My team expanded to 8 employees and things were looking great. Then, all the stimulus money started to dwindle and the reality of a recession started to take hold. I had to pull back and I decided to just patiently wait until the storms subsided in the economy instead of giving up. During this time, there were major setbacks, financial losses I could not recoup, bad packaging and skyrocketing costs to manufacture and package my products that were caused by major disruptions in my supply chain because of COVID shutdowns.

After all these setbacks, I decided to take another leap of faith and completely rebrand my look and packaging after 4 years in business. I went back to a very luxurious black and gold branding, inspired by Chanel's branding, that I had in 2019, but had gone for a more minimal clear glass look. During this process, I was very careful to communicate with my loyal fan base about the challenges we had faced and how much I appreciated their patience during COVID and excite them about the changes to come by building anticipation and giving them sneak peeks and VIP-only sales on the original packaging to increase sales and turnover of the old packaging. Thankfully the new branding has been a big hit and most of my customers are remaining loyal.

Staying focused on the brass ring and your goals can be incredibly daunting as self-doubt and financial hardships of running and growing your business creep in. So I thought it would be helpful if I gave a few of my keys to staying in business no matter what comes your way.

KEYS TO SUCCESS IN ANY BUSINESS:

1. Have a vision, patience, fierce determination and tenacity

2. Keep refining and perfecting your idea, market fit, strategy and website, social media, etc.

3. ALWAYS keep learning, growing and challenging yourself to be a better entrepreneur and make your business better, even if that means redesigning, rebranding and reimagining your product lines.

4. Surround yourself with those more successful or further along than yourself for you to learn from, but don't let it discourage you into giving up because you feel like you aren't at their level yet. Every business starts at ground zero, just like you. Find groups of entrepreneurs you can bounce ideas off of that will give you constructive feedback.

5. Don't let haters drag you down- including yourself!

6. See #1 again.

I truly believe that every business can and will survive if they have a great idea and are patient enough to weather the storms of self-doubt and setbacks.

Sometimes other entrepreneurs who are starting out will ask me how I got where I am. Patience, Persistence and Tenacity are the best keys to success. I had to learn to not be afraid to fail and pay my dues, but, instead, learn from them and accept when I needed to change and get better.

Being a small business means I can pivot very quickly and not have to account to shareholders or investors who might have a different idea. This has helped me to pivot rapidly when the market has changed and launch new products very quickly to keep up with trends in the skincare industry.

I have worked very hard and had a lot of great breaks along the way that have helped, but ultimately, it has been the personal touch in customer service that has given me an edge in the industry. I have real fans who tell me all the time that they love my company and my products. That was my ultimate goal and dream that people would fall in love with my company and want to be a loyal customer and fan because of that and it has paid off long-term.

In just the last year, Bella Vida Santa Barbara has been awarded 18 clean beauty awards.

Most recently awarded were the 2024 Beauty Shortlist Awards:

Winner, Riviera Luxury Eye Serum with orchid flower stem cells

Winner, Brighten Vitamin C Cream for hands, body and face

Editor's Choice Awards:

Sunlight Serum

Cocomero Watermelon Glow Serum

Playa Ocean Mineral Mask

Playa Ocean Mineral Restoring Cream

Rejuvenate and Firm Retinol Mask

Dolce Cherry Reviving Cleanser

DECIDING NOT TO QUIT:

My advice to anyone wanting to start an ecommerce business is to first of all, be passionate about what you are starting, educate yourself on the market and then start it! Many people wait years to start something and then might never get going at all. Decide to start and never give up until you have success. If that means redesigning, reenvisioning, pivoting and hiring someone to help you get clarity on branding and positioning, then do it. Every single business that is successful has had major setbacks that could have taken them out of the game.

I truly believe that if you simply wait, sit back and be patient even though you don't see things happening, you will win. For every person who quits before you, you are winning. And there are people out there who are looking up to you and wishing they were in your place.

These five years have shown me that you can't give up when you feel like it is not going anywhere. Pace yourself and don't over spend on ads and inventory, be patient and keep growing and changing. You will get there!

Cheers to you! Erin Schmidt, CEO, Bella Vida Santa

Spring 2024 Makeup Trends

Brighten up your Spring Makeup

As we roll into the freshest season of the year, spring, it’s time to incorporate brand-new beauty looks that not only bring us into the current moment but brighten up our appearance, so we look our best!

PRETTYIN PEACH

For spring 2024, peach tones are popping! Try wearing this delicious color on your cheeks. Nars’ iconic blush in the color "Orgasm," is one of the best universal peach-toned blushes around. If your skin’s undertone is cool, or pink/red, which typically looks best with a pink or red-colored blush, try mixing your usual blush color with a peach-toned blush that’s appropriate for the color depth of your skin.

How to Apply Blush the Right Way

WHERE TO BLUSH

To locate where your blush should be applied to your cheeks:

STEP 1: Relax your face.

STEP 2: Using your fingers, feel where your cheekbones round inward.

STEP 3: Back your fingers up to the highest points before your cheekbones round inward. These highest points are known as the apples of your cheeks. STEP 4: Touch the highest points of the apples of your cheeks with your index fingers.

STEP 5: With your index fingers on the apples of your cheeks, move your thumbs along your cheekbones to the tops of your ears. The path your thumbs take from the apples of your cheeks to the tops of your ears is where you should apply blush.

NOTE: Imagine a horizontal line that runs across your face at the base of your nose. Don’t apply blush to your cheek area below this line, or it will create the appearance of pulling your face downward. Place two fingers against the side of your nose. Stop your blush at the finger that’s closest to your cheek, or attention will go to your nose.

TIP: Your blush can double as a mid-tone shade for your eye makeup.

makeup statements.

TIP: Eyeshadow can be used as eyeliner.

Spring Shimmer

SHIMMER THIS SPRING

Frosty ice-white eye makeup, which was seen on the runways for Spring, 2024, brings a perfect effervescent feel to the season and gives a nod to the sixties and early aughts. Pair this cool look with eyelashes amply coated in black mascara. Brighter eye makeup colors, such as blue and purple with shimmer, were also seen on the runways for Spring, 2024. For a wearable upto-date look that can take you into summer, try wearing shimmery peachtoned eye makeup.

GET YOUR GLOW ON

Glowing skin is a hot trend that’s continuing into Spring, 2024. A great way to get a glow, without appearing greasy, is to apply facial powder to only those areas where you don’t want to shine, such as your T-zone. If you feel you need to apply power to your entire face, but still want a glow, lightly powder areas you wish to shine, then press those areas with a tissue to lift away any excess powder.

20

Dark nude 90s lips, which are continuing as a trend for spring 2024, can be freshened up by swapping brown lip products to line the perimeter of the lips with brighter shades, such as red or pink; and instead of filling in the lips with a nude shade, try a paler red or pink for brighter lip looks that pair better with the season. Make sure to subtly blend the line where the two colors meet.

TIP: To create an updated 90s lip look, follow these steps:

STEP 1: Line the perimeter of your lips with a lip color that’s darker than your natural lip color.

STEP 2: Blend the line inwards, towards the center of your mouth, using a lip brush, cotton swab, or clean finger.

STEP 3: Using a lip brush or a clean finger, apply a paler shade of lip color to the center of the mouth.

STEP 4: Blend the paler shade of lip color a little, so there are no lines of demarcation.

TIP: For a more pronounced multidimensional lip look, apply Bella Vida SB’s Lush Lip Oil to finish.

Get Polished

Polish up for spring 2024 in nail colors that include metallic silver, iridescent pearl, cherry red, Easter egg pastels, such as light blue, lavender, and pale yellow, and shades of nude-pink.

Wear Designs as Fresh as Flowers

It’s always exciting to discover fresh new talent with huge potential, and fashion designer Anna Flowers is one such star on the rise. This dynamo is at the top of the founder of Portland Fashion Week Tod Hunter Faulk’s list, which is a huge nod, as more winners of the TV show Project Runway have come from Portland Fashion Week than L.A. Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week combined.

In the spirit of seeing Anna bloom to her full potential, I connected her with top NYC stylist, fashion historian and educator, Edward Nashen, who’s worked with John Galliano, Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Christian Lacroix, and Jean Paul Gaultier, just to name a few.

With the goal of getting Ms. Flowers designing at the level of the top names in fashion, Mr. Nashen and Ms. Flowers went to work and were hugely successful in creating luxury pieces that any celebrity would be proud to wear on the red carpet. The one-of-a-kind pieces that Ms. Flowers designed and created for me are viewable in the images for this article, and, yes, I proudly wore them on the red carpet.

The response I received was overwhelming. Everyone loved her beautiful, elegant, expertly crafted, stand out pieces. Ms. Flowers is more than ready to create luxury pieces for any occasion. She can be contacted through her website: annaflowersdesigns.com.

Erin Schmidt

L egacy Talk with Erin Schmidt, CEO & Visionary behind Bella Vida Global by Ashkan Tabibnia

Erin Schmidt is celebrating 5 years of her company Bella Vida Santa Barbara and overcoming obstacles that would have taken most entrepreneurs out of the game. Her story of surmounting devastating losses and finding joy and a truly "Bella Vida, Beautiful Life" in spite of it has been an inspiration to many fellow entrepreneurs.

Ashkan: "Please tell us about your upbringing and the significant meaning behind your name. How did your parents shape who you are today, serving as your inspirations and mentors?"

Erin: "My parents were both very spiritual people and I was raised Catholic with a very strong beliefin God. My parents were very dedicated to our church and my mom sang in our church choir for over 30 years. Both my parents had actually been in the Catholic ministry before they left, met and fell in love later. And because my family has very strong Irish ancestry on both sides, my mom wanted to name me Erin, which means "peace" and is also used as another name for Ireland. "Erin Go Bragh" is often used at Saint Patrick's day and means "Ireland Forever," but after so many years of bloodshed in Ireland, it is fitting that it could also mean "Peace Forever."

I began forming my company, Bella Vida Santa Barbara in November, 2018, and in the middle ofpreparing to launch, my father died very tragically, which set my world into a tailspin. I was very close with my dad and he and I had a special bond and relationship, so I was truly devastated by his loss. However, instead ofletting this tragedy stop me, I used it to fuel my passion to create not just a company, but a movement called "Bella Vida" which means "beautiful life." My mission and motto were "beauty begins inside" and that we have always been about more than skincare. I always wanted to help people to love themselves on the inside and outside. My vision and mission are now coming to life with the launch in 2024 of Bella Vida Global."

Ashkan: "How would you describe yourself today? Are you entrepreneurial? What are your ideals and the most important priorities in your life currently?"

Erin: "I suppose I would describe myself as a serial entrepreneur and multifaceted in the many industries I have education and expertise in. I have a Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology, have been an Investment Adviser and Financial Advisor, CEO and Organic Skincare Formulator. I have found a way to juggle all ofthis while being a mom to a daughter with moderate Autism.

So yes, I guess I do consider myselfan entrepreneur. It is sort ofa funny term because there is no official school for entrepreneurship, that I know of, accept a business degree, but that does not make you an entrepreneur. You can only truly be an entrepreneur ifyou start your own brand and company. I have been starting and running businesses since early in the history ofthe internet. I created my first ecommerce vintage and modern fashion store on eBay in around 2005 and since then I have launched 5 other ecommerce stores, websites and social media accounts that supported those businesses. Now with Bella Vida Global we will have over 8 divisions, including our own Foundation to give back to children and families with special needs, which has been a passion of mine since 1995. I take pride that I have helped hundreds ofchildren and teens with special needs in my career.

Erin cont.: "My ideals have always been to protect the environment, support others who are struggling and find a way to do business that means something more than a product.

My top priorities are my family, my daughter and my husband, Brady. In all things I try to balance my passion for my work with my love for them and the rest of my family."

Ashkan: "Regarding global initiatives, what are the top three causes close to your heart and why? How have these causes impacted you, possibly stemming from childhood experiences or significant events?"

Erin: "Given my background, education and my own daughter, helping children with Autism and special needs along with supporting their families has been a passion ofmine. I have always cared deeply about the environment as well since I was a child and saving animals from cruelty and endangerment. I have donated to various charity causes with my businesses over the years, such as Oceana, Autism non-profits and Feeding America and One for Israel, along with local charities that support the homeless in LA, like B.A.R.E. Truth and in the Bay Area of California.

Ashkan: "How does your family, especially your husband Brady, play a pivotal role in your life? What qualities make him an ideal husband and a wonderful father to your daughter with Autism?"

Erin: "I consider myself very fortunate to have had an incredibly supportive family which helped me to pursue my dreams of dance as a child and teen and then finishing seven years of college with a Master's degree. My parents were very spiritual and we were very involved in our Catholic church. They truly modeled being kind, generous and loving.

I am so blessed to have met Brady 12 years ago and to be loved and supported by him. He is not only a wonderful person and husband, but he has the fierce love of my daughter that goes beyond being a stepparent. To his credit, he knew nothing about Autism when he met her. She absolutely adores him, as do I!"

Ashkan: "In a recent interview, you mentioned three key characteristics—"patience, persistence, and tenacity" (PPT formula)—that have helped you achieve the impossible. Could you share an example or two from your past challenges where this formula proved successful?"

Erin: "Over the years running several businesses, I learned from my mistakes in previous companies that patience is the biggest key to success. Without it, you will inevitably get frustrated, lose your passion and give up, thinking it is hopeless.

I experienced this in a fashion brand I started by myself and it grew rapidly, but I overstocked inventory without knowing better, and got frustrated when sales slowed down and I had lots of stock left over. So instead of being patient and finding ways to get around this issue and learn from my mistakes, I got very discouraged, felt defeated, and gave up. I actually ended up donating all the remaining stock I had because I didn't want to store it any longer and had to write it off as a financial loss.

Although this was a painful and difficult lesson, when I started my company Bella Vida Santa Barbara a few years later, it helped me to not make those same mistakes

As far as persistence and tenacity, they go hand in hand, honestly. With persistence, you just keep going, moving the ball forward with each small step, even when you are met with opposition, challenges, setbacks and don't see changes happening.

Erin (cont.): "And tenaciousness is a very positive thing, I believe. It means you will 'never accept defeat' and 'will not give up and never stop trying until you attain your goals.' With tenacity, you can overcome challenges, self-doubt and 'imposter syndrome' that often entrepreneurs, even seasoned ones, struggle with. That's the feeling that you are posing as an entrepreneur when you really don't know what you are doing or perhaps you aren't qualified or skilled enough. Every entrepreneur I have met has struggled with this from time to time. It is normal and natural to get overwhelmed when things start to get bigger or more difficult. So it is crucial to surround yourself with a support system of other entrepreneurs who 'have your back' and will root you on, like I did with Foundr's Start and Scale course and Facebook group, and we are now partnered with 90210 Enterprise Advisory Legacy Council, both having an international group of entrepreneurs."

Ashkan: "About Bella Vida Global, tell us how did it originate, and what is its mission and vision? What are the core philosophies or commandments that differentiate it from other organizations, creating an ideal ecosystem for entrepreneurship while staying true to values?"

Erin: "Bella Vida Global was formed to house the different divisions of the company, including Bella Vida Santa Barbara Luxury Skincare and Bella Vida Magazine, as well as several upcoming divisions we will be launching soon.

Our mission is to create a conglomerate that inspires people and helps them to transform their lives to live a truly "beautiful life." Our vision is to create a cultural renaissance, which is so needed after years of the pandemic, political strife, cultural and racial division, and wars that have caused suffering and major difficulties around the world." (continued page 34)

Erin continued: "The key values ofBella Vida Global are to be kind, considerate and giving back to others, leaving the world a better place. All divisions and people involved in the divisions must demonstrate and uphold the values we hold dear. As a company that seeks to revolutionize and inspire, it is crucial that everyone we work with and promote have a strong moral compass and character, treating everyone with kindness, compassion and demonstrating this with how they conduct themselves and their business. That means I too have a lot to live up to, so it keeps me humble.

Unfortunately, not everyone can live up to these standards, so we sometimes are forced to not work with certain individuals who might say they uphold these principles, but in practice, their behavior shows a different side. I am certainly not perfect, and we don't expect people to be perfect either; however, we just won't tolerate disrespect to anyone on our team."

Erin continued: "We go out ofour way to be kind to people. And we truly love and value everyone, and try to treat them with professionalism and respect, but when that is not returned, there is a problem. Those who we choose to not work with might say we are the ones who are heartless. Ultimately, I have learned that it is very important to surround yourself with those that feed your soul and energy, not drain it. I have struggled to make my voice heard in the past and have been taken advantage ofby people because ofthat. Running a business has forced me to become much stronger, speak up and say no when I feel disrespected or devalued by someone. This is, honestly, very difficult for me, but completely necessary. It is our hope that those people will grow and be challenged to examine their behavior so they can be happier individuals. Life doesn't happen to us, it happens because ofus; our thinking, choices and behavior create the life we are experiencing."

Ashkan: "Reflecting on the importance of leaving a legacy, what drives your burning desire to achieve the impossible? What do you consider your current living legacy to be, and how do you wish to be remembered?

34

Erin: "Wow. That is a very big question! Now that I am older, leaving a legacy behind me for my daughter and family is much more important to me. I have always been motivated to create something for myselfthat I was proud of, but now I am creating with my husband, Brady, a living legacy that will outlast our lifetimes with Bella Vida Global and Bella Vida Foundation.

Both organizations seek to spread hope, love, kindness and inspiration. I would love to be remembered as someone who created a movement that inspired and transformed the world into a kinder place. And my living legacy is already as a person who has helped countless children with special needs, especially Autism, and their families to have the support they needed to communicate and live a happier and more fulfilled life. I am deeply proud ofthat."

Ashkan: "Lastly, what one message from your essence would you want others to follow for success and balance in their lives?"

Erin : "Looking back on my life, I am proud ofall I have accomplished, but I wish I had listened to my own heart and believed in myselfwhen I was much younger so that I would have followed my dreams and accomplished them sooner. So my message to everyone is aptly and poetically stated by the inspirational Eleanor Roosevelt, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty oftheir dreams" and "No one can make you feel inferior with your consent." These two quotes have inspired me to believe in the beauty ofmy dreams and to not let haters, or even those with good intentions, talk me out ofpursuing my dreams.

My greatest wish for everyone who reads this is that they are inspired to overcome their own mindset that might be holding them back from truly realizing their potential, going after their dreams and living a truly bella vida- beautiful life!"

Laser Facials to turn back time .

Meet Cydnee Powell, RN of Uplyft Longevity Center. I had the pleasure of meeting Cydnee last month and she invited me to experience first-hand the Fotona Laser Facial treatment. I was thrilled to accept as I have been wanting to try a laser facial as I have now turned 50 years old and I am always fascinated by new skin care technologies.

ABOUT UPLYFT LONGEVITY CENTER

Uplyft Longevity Center provides cutting-edge treatments, like the Fotona Laser facial treatment by Cydnee Powell, RN. Dr. Joy Kong is cofounder of the center and has also recently opened a new location on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH FOTONA LASER FACIAL TREATMENT:

Noticeable results in just 2 weeks

I was lucky enough to experience the Fotona Laser Facial myself and I am so impressed with the results!

The experience was so wonderful with Cydnee and her team at Uplyft. The entire team is very kind and compassionate, they made me feel so relaxed and comfortable so I could really enjoy the treatment. As a natural redhead, my skin is naturally more sensitive, but Cydnee reassured me that there was very little pain and little to no downtime was needed after the facial.

Before the treatment, I met with an on staff Medical Doctor to review my medical history. Before the treatment began, Cydnee applied a topical numbing cream to my entire face to help ease discomfort. For nearly all the facial, I felt no pain, however, any minor pain was more of a hot flash that only lasted a few seconds and was over entirely once the laser was moved to a new area that was less sensitive.

After the treatment, I was surprised that my skin looked totally normal and not red or irritated one bit and I had no pain or discomfort after the treatment either, accept for being numb for a while, like after visiting the dentist.

In the days that followed, I noticed my skin was tighter and, of course, I had some minor peeling, as my skin shed away the dead skin layers, that was easily exfoliated away with a silicone brush and the Bella Vida Santa Barbara Sapphire Soothing Oil Cleanser with Moroccan Blue Tansy to help with reducing inflammation, redness and calm my skin while cleansing it.

Now, just two weeks after my laser facial, I can honestly say my skin looks much younger, lifted, tighter and there is a noticeable decrease in the lines and wrinkles. I also have seen a dramatic lift in my eyelids, and it has given me a much more youthful glow. I have used the CharaOmni Stem Cell Regenerative Cream daily as well to assist in collagen production while the laser treatment is still working.

I am honestly so impressed with my results so far, and I know full results will continue over the next few weeks. My sincere thanks to Cydnee Powell and Dr. Joy Kong for their generosity and kindness in hosting me.

Desi Valentine live at the Troubadour, LA

desi valentine

Desi Valentine is a man of many talents. From acting to musical artist, actor and spiritual mentor, this man is no ordinary musical artist. We catch up with this legend in his own time to learn about his journey of healing, self-discovery and finding passion in music once again.

I have had the pleasure ofknowing Desi Valentine since 2016 and watching as his star rose in the music scene. His beaming smile, sincere warmth and endearing personality exhibit exactly why he has the potential to be a giant superstar in whatever he puts his mind to.

Originally from England, Desi studied acting at a prestigious acting academy. He also fell in love with music and writing songs and came to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.

In the recording studio, Desi is an absolute professional and at the top ofhis craft in songwriting and composing lyrics. It was a distinct honor watching him co-write the song "Angels in Disguise" with my husband, songwriter Brady Wade, at Rockton Road Studios with producer Nic Capelle, in just a single afternoon.

His soulful and stellar vocals, poetic lyrics and electric presence has led him to shine on the stage as a musical artist that cannot be confined to a single genre or sound. He has opened for acts such as Blondie, Andra Day, and cult classic LA Band, Vintage Trouble. His songs have been featured in countless commercials and hit movies and TV shows like "Suits." This exposure catapulted him into the spotlight and international acclaim.

Most notably, he was introduced by the legendary Sir Elton John on his acclaimed radio show "Rocket Hour," where Elton aptly described Desi as "an artist in his own right," acknowledging the depth and uniqueness ofhis craft.

Keeping up with Desi is difficult these days because he is busier than ever not just recording new songs, but in his new found love, Domino Group, which was born out ofhis own burnout in the spotlight while his stardom rocketed in the international music scene.

All ofthe success, touring, recording, performing and pressure in the spotlight led Desi to a crossroads. Amidst the pinnacle ofhis successful music career, Desi faced extreme burnout under the relentless pressure ofthe spotlight. This experience shed light, however, on a significant gap in the support system available to artists, sparking his inspiration to co-create his company, The Domino group.

Despite his soaring success in the music industry, Desi Valentine made a deliberate choice to explore his other passions: spiritual mentorship, coaching and somatic therapy. Stepping away from the limelight, he delved into guiding others on their transformative journeys, utilizing his experiences and insights to facilitate growth and healing.

In creating his company Domini Group with co-founder, transformational mentor Luna Valin, he seeks to help other performing artists to find their spiritual center and overcome the crippling pressures ofbeing in the limelight 24/7. Domino hopes to help artists to recover from and prevent burnout by taking care oftheir most important assets, their spiritual and emotional health and well-being.

Now, Desi Valentine is poised to make a triumphant return to the music scene with the upcoming release ofa new single in Summer, 2024. As he continues to navigate the intersection ofmusic and spiritual mentorship, Desi Valentine remains committed to inspiring audiences with his soul-stirring melodies and profound wisdom.

We are excited to see what this incredible artist has up his sleeve and how his years ofspiritual mentorship will impact his music and performances to come. One thing is certain, Desi Valentine is an artist you will immediately love from the first listen.

The Autism Spectrum

April 2 celebrates Autism Awareness Day, however, we believe it deserves an entire month to highlight this crucial topic as many families are experiencing life on the spectrum in one way or another.

After working with children with Autism since 1998 as a Speech-Language Pathologist, and then having my own daughter with moderate Autism, I can definitely say that there is no one singular experience that defines "life on the Autism Spectrum."

As a mom, my own journey has been filled with many joys and also intense challenges that, if I did not have the support system I needed, would have broken me, like it almost did. I am so proud of my daughter and how far she has come. Her smile, laugh and tenderness fill my heart with some much happiness and hearing her say, "I love you" is the greatest gift I could ever receive from God.

I am incredibly proud, not just of her, but of all the countless children with Autism who I have had the privilege to work with over the years. I know I am a better person for all the years I have contributed to others.

We celebrate the gifts of Autism and hope to help address some of the challenges. We honor the incredible array of abilities of those on the Autism Spectrum.

Shattering Stereotypes: Redefining Autism and Reshaping Society

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of neurodiversity, recognizing the wide spectrum of neurological differences. Autism is a complex developmental condition that affects how individuals perceive the world and interact with others. While autism presents unique challenges, it also brings forth many strengths and talents that contribute to the diversity of human experience.

Autism is often characterized by challenges in social communication and sensory processing, resulting in self-soothing through repetitive behaviors. Individuals on the autism spectrum may struggle to understand social cues, express themselves verbally, or regulate their sensory experiences. These challenges can present barriers to everyday activities and interactions, leading to misunderstandings and social isolation.

THE GIFTS OF AUTISM:

It's crucial to acknowledge that Autism is not solely defined by its challenges; rather, many individuals on the autism spectrum possess remarkable strengths and abilities that deserve recognition and celebration.

While some may face difficulties in certain aspects of daily life, people with Autism also often demonstrate exceptional talents and skills in art, music, mathematics, and technology. From their exceptional attention to detail and pattern recognition to their creativity and innovation, the talents of individuals on the autism spectrum enrich our communities and contribute to our society.

Understanding autism necessitates moving beyond stereotypes and embracing the diverse range of abilities and perspectives that individuals on the spectrum bring to the table.

53

Reaching teens and children to teach them coping strategies

To further this conversation, an upcoming episode of "Children's Lives Matter" on the "Thriving Women Network," which will be airing in March, promises to delve into neurodiversity and highlight the strengths and contributions of individuals with autism and other neurological diagnoses.

This groundbreaking episode aims to educate parents about the gifts and challenges that their autistic children face to open understanding and acceptance of autism and other neurodiverse conditions. The show will challenge societal perceptions and promote inclusivity.

Through personal stories and professional insights, this show will highlight the diverse talents and contributions of individuals with autism. From artistic endeavors and technological innovations to academic achievements and entrepreneurial ventures, neurodiverse individuals are making their mark in various fields and industries.

The new episode of "Children's Lives Matter" aims to provide a platform to amplify the voices of individuals with autism and their families. Through personal stories, expert interviews, and insightful discussions, the show will explore the complexities of autism and highlight the positive aspects of neurodiversity.

By spotlighting the gifts that come with neurodivergent thinking, the episode seeks to challenge misconceptions and foster greater acceptance and appreciation for individuals with autism.

The episode will highlight the role of education and awareness in promoting inclusivity and understanding. By providing teachers, parents, and caregivers with the knowledge and tools to support individuals with autism effectively, we can create environments that nurture their strengths and facilitate their success.

This may mean that schools embrace the need to self-soothe when an autistic child becomes overwhelmed by sensory input. It may mean creating safe, quiet, and comfortable spaces for highly sensitive individuals. Embracing neurodiversity in schools and workplaces not only benefits individuals with autism but also enriches the broader community by tapping into a diverse range of talents and perspectives.

As the producer of "Children’s Lives Matter," I emphasize the importance of establishing inclusive environments where people with neurodiverse diagnoses are valued, respected, and embraced for their unique identities. Through cultivating a culture of empathy, compassion, and acceptance, we can dismantle barriers and cultivate a society where everyone feels appreciated and empowered to flourish.

The Unseen Battle: Chronic Illness and Autism Unveiled

Raising a child on the autism spectrum, intertwined with special medical needs, offers an experience filled with a unique set of challenges, moments of unexpected joy, and deep, meaningful connections.

My journey as a mother to an autistic son who also requires special medical attention has been an enlightening adventure, a continuous learning and growing process alongside my child.

The observance of Autism Awareness Month acts as a heartfelt reminder of the hurdles faced by those with autism.

A defining moment that reshaped our lives occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2009. This date is etched in my memory, marking the day our lives took a dramatic turn. My 6-year-old son was admitted to UCLA hospital in a critical condition, facing a medical mystery that left doctors baffled.

This event catapulted me into the dual role of a full-time caregiver and an entrepreneur. as I wanted to stay by my son's side throughout his hospitalization while simultaneously launching a business from the confines of his hospital room. Fifteen years later on, this experience has imparted invaluable lessons about the intricacies of mothering a special needs child and managing multiple homebased businesses.

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS:

As my son Jovaan grew older, I began to notice other underlying issues, not realizing they were signs of autism that seemed to extend beyond his chronic illness.

For example, at an early age, he was toe-walking, and over time, his vibrant personality began to quiet and become reserved. Observing his struggles to communicate his feelings, especially when in physical pain, i. It became apparent that his health challenges, compounded by numerous surgeries and extended hospital stays, hindered his regular school attendance, impacting his social and educational development. (continued next page)

Michele Wilson and her son, Jovaan
56

This realization led to the difficult yet necessary decision to homeschool Jovaan, allowing him to learn at his own pace in an environment free from the pressures and the limitations of traditional schooling.

Over the years, we received multiple diagnoses, including Chronic Intestinal PseudoObstruction, Autism, Cognitive Developmental Delay Disorder, Noonan syndrome-like disorder, and loose anagen hair syndrome. These diagnoses served not merely as labels but as keys to unlocking a better understanding of Jovaan, enabling us to customize the support and interventions he needed to flourish. Navigating through the maze of school systems and advocating for his needs, we were blessed when a counselor at the Department of Rehabilitation at the age of 17 years old recognized Jovaan’s symptoms and recommended that we get him tested for autism. This was a pivotal moment in our journey toward ensuring that Jovaan could achieve his full potential.

With the support of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy and the Tri-Counties Regional Center, Jovaan rediscovered his voice and, with it, a newfound confidence. This breakthrough allowed him to engage more fully with the community, transforming tasks like grocery shopping into manageable, even enjoyable activities. As he stands on the threshold of adulthood, exploring potential career paths and educational opportunities, I am filled with pride at his resilience and eagerness to embrace life's challenges.

As we observe Autism Awareness Month, here are a few insights for other parents facing comparable challenges:

1. Embrace flexibility

2. Seek and accept support

3. Integrate your passions into your business

Managing the dual roles of caregiver and entrepreneur is an overwhelming challenge, but it is one that can lead to profound fulfillment and success.

I pray that our story is an inspiration of hope, highlighting the impact of transforming personal challenges into opportunities for growth and purpose.

ACCEPTING AND UNDERSTANDING YOUR Autism DIAGNOSIS

I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism (also referred to as Asperger's Syndrome) 15 years ago and I often speak on "The Benefits of Late Diagnosis." The official diagnosis helped make sense of my whole life prior; my misunderstandings of social situations and why I didn't think like most people.

I also saw my assets that were different then most people's skills. I have a creative imagination that can brainstorm ideas in many areas. I have the ability to visualize and the patience to carry out long range plans one step at a time.

My family agreed instantly with the Asperger's (HighFunctioning Autism) diagnosis and it also explained some of my "out of the ordinary behaviors."

Having founded and run the College Internship Program for College Students on the Spectrum (CIP) for many years before my ASD diagnosis and doing it without asking for help or truly understanding myself, I was able to now unleash my potential with this new knowledge. I was able to build a new curriculum for CIP, expand CIP to five campuses, write four books, and speak internationally. I was able to self-actualize my dreams because I accepted and liked who I was.

UNDERSTANDING Autism DIAGNOSIS & creating a 'person-centered plan'

Individuals on the Autism Spectrum are as unique as snowflakes and variation is par for the course.

Autism is not a disease, but if it were individuals would learn everything about their ASD diagnosis to try to figure out the best treatment.

Autism is much more profound and has life-long implications. So, taking the time to assess each area of a student’s life is vitally important. Such as:

What sensory issues do they have?

What social difficulties?

How are they affected by the environment (i.e., classroom, home, social environment)?

What are their strengths and areas of that need remediation?

Spending time doing these assessments will help each student in setting up a 'Person-Centered Plan' for their future. The goal being to fully accept the way they are and to know what they can do to change. Knowledge is Power. (continued next page)

Dr. Michael McManmon, Speaker, Author, Artist and diagnosed with ASD on a trip in Ireland.
58

Should you tell your child about their Autism diagnosis?

How do we build on someone’s abilities and assist them in attaining their goals?

We have to start with a full knowledge of themselves.

In my many years of working with children and young adults on the Autism Spectrum, students have reported that, prior to knowledge and understanding of their ASD diagnosis, they had negative stereotypes of themselves.

Sometimes, well-meaning parents kept their diagnosis from them to “protect them.” However, from what I have seen, this frequently back-fired.

Recently diagnosed teens and young adults, have shared with me over the years, that before they knew about their Autism diagnosis, they believed they were crazy, stupid, not good enough and numerous other extremely negative attributions.

I drew some of these same conclusions about my own self before I knew I was on the Autism Spectrum. I needed to understand my ASD diagnosis and learn to accept it.

I can tell you from my own journey into acceptance that helping each individual student understand his or her diagnosis empowers that person to talk about their Autism, read about it, ask questions, do research and then identify with a group of similar people, instead of feeling like an outsider their entire lives. Especially if it is framed in a positive way instead it being a negative diagnosis.

This knowledge and awareness often leads to feeling more hopeful and courageous about getting help, asking for accommodations, and/or gaining more information in the various learning, and eventually work, environments they will encounter.

Bella Vida Santa Barbara was founded five years ago and the vision and mission was always greater than just skincare, and meant to bring out the inner beauty of our fans so they could truly love themselves and live a 'beautiful life.'

Now, with the formation of Bella Vida Global and all of its varied divisions, that mission is now expanding into its original inspiration. "Beauty begins Inside" was our original tagline beginning in 2019 and still rings true today. When we love ourselves and accept our 'perfect imperfections,' we can move past our insecurities and truly love ourselves so we can share that joy with the world.

We believe that each small act of kindness, even to ourselves in self-care, can help to change the world for good.

Embracing a Beautiful Life:

The Essence of Bella Vida Academy

In a world often spinning with chaos, Bella Vida Academy emerges as a beacon of tranquility and guidance, by not just coaching individuals, but nurturing them towards a life of balance and harmony. Echoing the philosophy of Yin Yang, we believe that true beauty lies in the equilibrium of life's pendulum, the art of running and returning.

At the core of Bella Vida Academy is a tapestry woven with the threads of innate abilities and hard-earned skills, honed through life’s myriad challenges. Our consultancy division, led by the visionary Ashkan Tabibnia, founder of the esteemed 90210 Enterprise Advisory Legacy Council, stands as a testament to the embodiment of living legacies.

Our consultants are not mere advisors; they are living legends who breathe life into their missions and serve as beacons of inspiration. We curate a roster of individuals who have seamlessly intertwined with their missions, leaving a legacy in the present rather than waiting for the future. Their mastery is a result of a conscious choice in education, overcoming adversities and a relentless pursuit of their purpose. This conglomerate stands as a testament to the vision of a beautiful life, where challenges are transformed into stepping stones towards greatness.

At Bella Vida, we tread a path that resonates with integrity, respect, and service to humanity. Our mission is to unite a world torn apart by discord, through the guidance of those who prioritize heart over profit and who understand the true essence of living beautifully. Let us embrace this journey together, weaving a tapestry of wisdom and compassion that transcends boundaries, enriching lives and fostering unity.

This February, on a cold and rainy morning, Erin, I and Executive Director of Bella Vida Global, Ashkan Tabibnia, met at a local cafe in Beverly Hills to get coffee prior to one of our first Bella Vida Global strategy sessions. After some general discussion, coffee and pastries, we decided to walk to Ashkan’s Beverly Hills office in the pouring rain, without umbrellas. We were pelted by the heavy rainfall, but we were also all very excited about starting to frame out the various divisions of Bella Vida Global. We arrived at Ashkan’s beautiful office building, and took the elevator up to the Penthouse floor.

This meeting with Ashkan was the culmination of years of laboring in the trenches of entrepreneurialism, persevering through the hardships, celebrating the victories, getting back up after setbacks, enduring nights of tears and greeting with gratitude, mornings of joy and positivity. I’ve observed Erin’s journey up close and personal and I can say unequivocally, that she is genetically predisposed to plowing through obstacles with patience, persistence and tenacity. All three of which have been tested by fire. This was also a very special day to meet as it was the five year anniversary of Erin’s father’s tragic passing. Naturally, there was a lot of emotion in the room.

As we began discussing strategy, goals and pathways for a successful global conglomerate, Ashkan asked Erin what my part would be in this new and exhilarating journey. Ashkan and Erin suggested that I would oversee financial matters because of my background in financial planning. I was willing to contribute in this area, but in my heart and soul I knew it was my moment to contribute in a different way. So, I expressed my desire to be the overseer, and initiator, of the philanthropic causes of Bella Vida Foundation. This is where my true passion is, at this stage of my life. Bettering other people’s lives provides me with great satisfaction, energy, joy and personal fulfillment.

I’ve always had a heart to be a blessing to others, and I also feel a healthy desire to share my story, gifts, talents and wisdom in a way that brings tangible relief, hope and healing to those in need; and Bella Vida Foundation will be the conduit as well as the catalyst. A scripture that hits home for me is from the Gospel of Luke where Jesus says, “To whom much is given, much is required.” And, as another scripture declares, “it is indeed more blessed to give than receive.” I have to agree. The act of giving and being an instrument of positive change in people’s lives, makes the sun shine even brighter on your own life. Generosity adds to the givers life a richness that reaches far deeper in the heart and soul than material wealth. Material wealth is wonderful, and more people need it around the globe. But, even more wonderful, are the possibilities we ignite when material wealth is invested in such a way; the returns are eternal.

We believe that the gifts, talents, wealth, knowledge and freedom we are blessed with is to be utilized to enrich the lives of others. Our vision is big and beyond ourselves, or what we could accomplish on our own, with Bella Vida Global. Moreover, we believe that we are all created with the potential to have a significant impact for good. (continued next page)

Erin and I have many philanthropic endeavors that we are passionate about. The first being Autism, specifically, helping the parents of young and adult children with Autism. Our 16 year old daughter has moderate Autism and will need help for her entire life. Erin and I know the tremendous toll parenting a child with autism can take on finances, personal freedom and relationships. We want to help parents of autistic children get control of and live better, more enjoyable lives. Raising a child with autism comes with many challenges each and every day. And our blueprint for massive positive impact in this area is birthed from our own personal experiences.

When I met my wife Erin, our daughter with autism, was 4 years old. I didn’t have a clue what autism was. One of my best friends said, “Brady, that is going to be a very hard life. It’s a deal breaker.” He was accurate about the first part. But, it wasn't a deal breaker; not for me. When you’ve found the partner of your dreams, the one you can’t live without; your true, heaven-sent soulmate, you’ll move mountains to be with that person. That’s the power of love. I knew I had love strong enough to work through whatever would come our way.

When the going gets tough, I just remember the day God spoke to my heart, back in 2018. I was sitting on the sand at East Beach in Santa Barbara, watching my daughter play in the water. The afternoon sun was glancing off of her hair. She had a smile of pure joy as she frolicked whimsically along the shore, picking up seashells, diving in and out of the water, while floating peacefully on the whitewash of dissipating waves. I’m certain she was a mermaid in another life.

It had been a particularly difficult week, leading up to this day. Two days, before I attended a meeting conducted by a local charity that works with special needs children and their families. I was hoping to get more informed because I was feeling ill-equipped and frankly, defeated. I hoped I would meet people who had the same struggles and maybe learn more about autism.

While I honestly didn’t learn much at the meeting, I did receive an admonition from one of the organization's directors. When I introduced myself to the group earlier, and told them a about my situation, I referred to her as my 'stepdaughter.' I don’t even remember what the man’s name was, but after the meeting he came up to me, and before I could get out the door he said, “Thank you for coming. Do you mind if I make a suggestion?" I said sure. He said kindly, “Don’t call her your stepdaughter anymore, call her your daughter. That may help change some of the way you view your situation.”

As I pondered what he said, the man walked off. He didn’t know I had been struggling, living with a dark cloud over my head, and the depressing thoughts that this was just too big for me to handle. Looking back, I know what he said was prophetic from God. So there I was, two days after that meeting, sitting on the beach, watching her play in the water. I heard a tender voice inside which stilled my soul and a quietness set in. Tears began streaming down my face and my body suddenly felt warm as God began speaking to my spirit. What I heard was, “She is your daughter for life. She is your mission and if this is the only mission you succeed at in your life, I will be as pleased with you as if you had changed the world.” I broke, the dark cloud lifted and I fully surrendered and felt empowered, like never before, for the task. There is liberty in total commitment and this was one of those 'storm the shore and burn the boats,' 'no turning back' moments.

My daughter now refers to me as “Daddy Brady,” which is sweet music to my ears. She is beautiful, smart, funny, intuitive, loving and has a smile that just lights up the room. This is how I see her. Her meltdowns come and go, but are less these days. However, now I always know that when they occur, it’s not “her;” it is her condition. Love is bigger than the meltdowns. I’m still learning and don’t know near as much as her mom, Erin, but what I do know is that love does indeed conquer all.

In closing, I’d like to share twelve admonitions from the book of Corinthians in the Holy Bible; "Love is patient, love is kind. Love is not easily angered. Love keeps no record of wrongs. Love protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres. Though I speak with the voice of an angel and have not love, I am merely noise. Though I can see into the future, and understand all mysteries, and have not love, I am nothing. Though I have knowledge and faith that can move mountains, but lack love, I have nothing. Though I give all my possessions to feed the poor and have not love, it profits me nothing. Love bears all things, believes in all things, hopes in all things. Love endures every circumstance. Now faith, hope and love abide, but, the greatest of these is love.

Love never fails."
