This past year has come with it’s challenges, there is no question, however as seedstock producers we are a part of the best industry to be in during these times. Beef continues to be in high demand and the outlook for this industry looks promising. You will see as you flip through the following pages, we are putting a strong emphasis on the incredible carcass merits of this breed. We are excited to be a part of the feeding trials that are taking place now at Highway 21 Feeders. The data and the feedback we have received thus far is tremendous! We are continually looking for unique genetics that will complement the breeding programs we have developed in order to share with you, our valued customers. We think the 2021 lineup is a powerful and exciting group. With the uncertainty surrounding AHS restrictions, we ask that you check our Summit 3 Facebook page or the website at www.summit3sale.com for updates leading up to the sale. We will continue to keep everyone informed as to what restrictions will be imposed on sale day, the 27th of March. Knowing the free, carrier or affected status of cattle in a herd helps reduce and/or eliminate risk of propagating the disorders in future generations. If cows are free, you can choose a bull based on his genetics and/or phenotype that best fits your breeding objectives, whether or not he is a carrier. If cows are carriers or from carrier lineages, mate them only to non-carrier bulls. Replacement heifers from these matings should be DNA tested and/or mated to a non-carrier bull.

If one of your goals as a beef producer is to improve tenderness of the meat produced, there are a few tools available to you. Neogen Canada provides genetic tests to help select cattle that have the genetic potential to have tender carcasses. One of these tools is a Leptin test. Leptin is a fat-metabolism hormone with a mild effect on fat deposition. Leaner cattle carry allele C and more marbled cattle carry the allele T, the results of the allele will be either CC, CT or TT. The leptin test evaluates the markers on the hormone to help select cattle with the desired trait. The leptin test will report the status of the animal for the leptin gene. The other tool to predict tenderness in a beef animal is the Tenderness test. The Tenderness test is a product designed to help commercial and seedstock producers select cattle with the genetic potential for tender meat and give an indication of whether the carcass will be fattier or leaner. The Tenderness test reports the marker status at three major locations (Calpain316, Calpain4751, and CAST) in the bovine genome known to have an impact on meat tenderness. To assist in the interpretation of these results, those three markers are then combined into an overall Tenderness Score, rated on a scale of 1 (Tough) to 10 (Tender). Using the overall Tenderness Score is a great way to quickly and effectively select which animals can contribute or improve tenderness in your herd or breed. The Tenderness score is a great tool for management of genetics that can contribute to the tenderness and leanness of the carcass. This allows for producers to sort cattle with increased genetic potential for tender meat allowing for marketing opportunities for premium meat quality and industry preservation. TERMS The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable sale day in Canadian Dollars, March 27, 2021. All settlements must be made with the sale clerk before the animals will be released, unless there has been an agreement made between the seller and purchaser prior to the sale. DISPUTES In case of disputes the bidding will be reopened between the parties. If there are no further bids, the buyer will be the person the auctioneer accepted the last bid from. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. INSURANCE Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser at the time of sale. If the animals are not taken home by the new owner sale day, arrangements must be made with the seller on March 27, 2021 for delivery. Animals returning to the seller’s farm must be insured. U.S. BUYERS All live animals that sell are guaranteed exportable to the U.S. Export costs are the responsibility of the purchaser. The rate of exchange will be announced sale day from the block. HEALTH GUARANTEES All bulls and females are guaranteed breeders and in good breeding condition. All bulls are semen tested & guaranteed to be breeders. Each animal becomes the responsibility of the purchaser as soon as sold. All bulls must be insured. DELIVERY If delivery is required, buyer must be able to accept delivery when sellers facilitate transport to that area or make arrangements to pick up at a later date. Free board is offered until May 1, 2021, and at a cost of $5/day thereafter. Bulls being left with the seller must be insured.
