The past few months have been among some of the most frightening, tumultuous, and emotional that any of us can remember in our lifetime.

This COVID-19 pandemic has been felt by individuals, families, companies, and communities across the world.

It has required more than ever from our society; more importantly, it’s evident what it has revealed about us as the human race.

In many different ways, we have been able to witness our longing to be connected with one another.

Highlighting + featuring people—telling their stories—is a role everyone on the BELLA team loves + feels privileged to play. This is more evident today as these are the moments that matter most.

This issue is a truly special one. We love bringing you fabulous celebrity, beauty, fashion, travel resources, and more. But given our current climate, I couldn’t help but highlight just a few of the women, men, small businesses, designers, and celebrities who have helped make our ‘new normal’ a little easier. I hope you see all the love poured into every page.

The vision for this cover came to me in prayer after crying for hours when this all started. I was in a state of disbelief as I am sure many of you were. All I could do was ask God for guidance, especially because for several very difficult days, I couldn’t see the future for BELLA. As I prayed, Jessica Licciardello’s + Emily Brickel Edelson’s artwork came into my thoughts. So did the words ‘honor them.’

I thought about my husband, who has not stopped going into work every day, along with our frontline workers: delivery personnel, bankers, train conductors, construction workers, and the ones taking the hardest blows—our medical professionals.

BELLA Publisher Jennifer DeCillis coordinated a Zoom call with both artists, and we immediately got to work.

Andrew Loomis described sketching as bringing “All the world’s light to form.” Thank you Jessica + Emily for bringing light to form. And thank you to everyone who has sent me messages of hope. They mean more than you know to me and the BELLA team.

To our frontline + essential workers, this issue is for you. Thank you!

T

here’s a time when you meet a designer and you both just instantly click. That was Jennifer Diederich and I. I first came across her eclectic colorful designs through a friend’s Instagram account, and was instantly mesmerized. I had to know more about this brand and who the designer was. Her collection is called, “Suite,” and she’s most ironically known for her quick escape coats.

So how did Jennifer get her start and build her brand? From “Project Runway” to now, I connected with the designer to learn more.

How did you come to curate your personal style?

I have always had strong tastes and ideas. As a child, I ate whole lemons. I wore all neon outfits. I refused to participate in group activities where I felt like I couldn’t express my point of view uniquely. I tried out all the trends and saw what worked on me.

It wasn’t until my last year at the Fashion Institute of Technology that I started to pull all these ideas together to create my personal sense of style.

I have an affinity for old movies, playful colors, whimsical prints, dresses, swing coats, cocktail parties, and city life. Because I love these things, I always have them in my mind while creating or shopping. I believe the most important rule in creating your own personal style is to only buy what you love. Always search out that detail that feels uniquely you.

Can you tell us the story behind Suite?

During a week-long stay at the Plaza Hotel, I couldn’t help imagining some of Eloise’s wardrobe getting mixed up with the luxury luggage destined for one of the splendid suites. That moment of inspiration sparked the idea for Suite, which is also inspired by vintage 50’s and 60’s bon ton clothing, playful prints, and all things colorful. It was also very important to me to create unique, conversation-starting coats at a price my friends could afford.

How did appearing on “Project Runway” alter your career?

Before “Project Runway,” I was designing embroidery designs for Blumarine in a small town in Italy. When I got back to Italy after filming the show, I wasn’t really sure what to do next. So, I slowly started creating custom dresses and developing Suite.

As you start a brand or business, insight from others who have already created one is priceless. “Project Runway” helped to facilitate those introductions because people were curious to meet me after being on the show. However, any notoriety from “Project Runway” is only a foot in the door. The rest is up to you.

What advice would you give someone wanting to pursue a similar path?

Fashion design may seem so glamorous, but in reality, it is made up of long hours, dragging bags around and sewing all night. You will need to be fully dedicated for success.

Giving Back

One industry in particular has been stepping it up in the fight against the international pandemic, COVID-19.

With healthcare and essential industries overburdened, the fashion industry has made a significant commitment to give back and show support when the world needs it most.

The designer jewelry brand is repurposing existing materials by donating their yellow-branded bandanas to local female volunteer groups to sew masks that are donated to various hospitals in the Austin, New Orleans, New York, and California areas. After launching a social media post on this initiative, Kendra Scott received more than 1,000 requests for bandanas from all across the country and has since committed to producing 4,000+ masks for frontline workers.

Acknowledging that the COVID-19 crisis has changed everyone’s priorities for the time being, Lizzy Lahive, Lahive’s founder, was drawn to the social media outcry for our healthcare and necessity workers. She explains, “It is so easy to take for granted the contribution and sacrifice made by healthcare workers, so I decided to put everything on hold and have been personally making masks.” The designer knows she won’t be able to cater to this need forever, but for now, she is doing what she can and encourages everyone to do the same for their communities.

NICOLE MILLER Nicole Miller is an iconic global womenswear brand, designed in New York City. Nicole has been working in the industry for more than 30 years, and has recently transformed her signature graphic prints and luxe fabrics to serve a good cause in light of COVID-19. “I started making masks at home a few weeks ago when quarantine first began. I’ve been making them for my friends and family, while sharing tutorials on my social media and website, so that everyone can learn how to make their own with items found in their homes. Recently, I came up with an easy pattern to make masks with t-shirts and elastic hair ties. You can have some fun with them by choosing shirts with patterns and prints. We all need to do our part by staying home, staying connected, and of course, remembering to wash our hands!”

MARC BOUWER Marc Bouwer is a sought-after fashion designer, specializing in women’s eveningwear. His designs have graced red carpets and the pages of magazines, including BELLA’s 2019 Fashion Issue. Living in New York City, Marc quickly recognized the need for protective facemasks and knew he had the skill set to make a difference. “I realized we all needed masks and that they were in short supply, so I set out to create washable masks that were aesthetically pleasing. The iconic women’s fashion brand Anne Klein has united with the namesake designer’s granddaughter, Jesse Gre Rubinstein, to provide relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. hen Ebony Kankam London walked into Ulta Beauty in Holmdel, NJ, this past December to get her makeup done for what was to be her baby shower, she thought it would be a day to remember. She did what most of us do when we’re getting made up by a pro—she brought in a picture for reference.

However, things did not go as planned. The makeup artist told Ebony that her skin tone was too dark for most colors in the store. And what she ended up doing was ‘the best she could do.’ The conversation got even more uncomfortable when the artist asked Ebony if she had ever gotten her makeup professionally done.

“It was sad, “ Ebony wrote in a Facebook post. “I felt like I was in 1990 when makeup was made for one type of skin. In a store full of people who didn’t look like me, I felt sad and upset, like my skin tone was a problem.”

A week after her post went viral, Ebony says the experience has been eye opening, to say the least.

The makeup artist’s comments weren’t anything she hadn’t heard before, but they have since reignited Ebony’s need to become an advocate for herself and others like her.

That social media post certainly made its rounds online—I read it, as did BELLA’s Glam Team.

Together, we decided to fly Ebony back from her home in Texas to New Jersey on January 13, 2020, for the ultimate “redo”—the way it always should have been.

Joining forces with Vivian Pasano (photography), Lauren Vena (makeup), Tajane (hair), Tiffany Pinero (stylist), and Jessica Cirz Photography (video shoot), it was BELLA’s privilege to give the expecting mom the full glam experience she and baby London so deserved.

After our shoot, Ebony shared: “I left feeling empowered, appreciated, grateful, and—of course—drop-dead gorgeous!

Thank you, Vanessa Coppes for putting together a team of artists who were trained and skillful in their prospective roles and could see the beauty in different shades. Thank you for making me feel like I mattered.”

Since our time together, a healthy and gorgeous baby has made its way into the world. And, Ebony and representatives from Ulta have also been working together to make amends. The best part?

She sees for herself a bright future advocating for women of color, diversity, and inclusion.

Behind every great head of a hair is a great hairstylist, and the man behind many of the world’s most glamorous locks is Andrew Fitzsimons. Now, the in-demand celebrity hairstylist shares his magic touch to ponying up.

Gathering your hair may be a bit of a difficult task, so I recommend flipping the hair over and brushing toward the crown. You’ll need a sturdy brush to do the job—I like using the

Primark x Andrew Fitzsimons Paddle Brush.

Here’s how to master the look.

Before you hit your hair with any type of heat, it’s important to apply heat protection. It helps keep your hair healthy, enables you to style it easier, and leaves your strands shiny and moisturized.

My go-to is the TIGI Copyright Heat Protection Spray. It’s lightweight but provides all the benefits you need.

Start off by first giving yourself a smooth, foundational blowout, drying the hair in the direction the ponytail will go. You want to really put the effort into the prep because that’ll “guide” your hair to respond the right way when you start building the final look.

Depending on the type of pony you’re going for, you’re going to need either a blowout lotion or gel. Try NatureLab TOKYO Smooth Blowout Lotion, or TIGI Copyright Custom Complete Maximum Hold Hairspray. If you’re opting for a messy high pony vibe, then no product is needed.

Optional, but sometimes needed are extensions. Add fullness to your pony by incorporating some clip-in extensions to the look. Shampoo the extensions, but don’t condition them, as this will create more grip. Use five to 10 wefts on shorter hair if the goal is to add length. Use three wefts to simply add fullness to already-long hair. One of my favorite brands to use is BeautyWorks, which has extensions in a variety of colors, lengths, and textures. Pro tip: Don’t place the extensions where the ponytail will land—it adds unwanted volume in areas that can also be a bit painful.

Before securing into place, make sure the placement of the ponytail is exactly where you’d like it to be.

Use one hand to hold the position and the other to apply product, smoothing the strands where needed.

Secure that pony in place. The key to this style is to find the right ponytail holder that’ll leave your hair snatched all night. You can use a conventional hair tie, but I prefer to use a hair bungee with hooks at the end because it has the best grip and won’t pull strands or break in the middle of the night.

Add the finishing touches to the look. Smooth out any flyaways at the base and style the pony as you see fit. Curl the ends if you’re looking for that super cute 90’s flip, or leave it straight and long for runway-ready locks.

MOST REWARDING: I think it’s being in

charge of your own trajectory. There’s no one to tell you what to do, or when and how to do it.

It’s all you. It’s not for the faint of heart—when things don’t go the way you hoped there’s only one person to blame, and that’s yourself, and that can sting. But when things go right—when you have a happy staff, happy customers, and recognition—it’s very rewarding. I couldn’t do what I do without our staff and customers, for sure, but knowing I was the one who set us on course and brought us to where we are feels great.

SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Surrounding

myself with competent, smart, hardworking, loyal people. They’re very hard to find, but they’re vital to success.

HOW I DEFINE BEAUTY: Beauty is about

taking care of yourself, inside and out. Remember that movie, “Shallow Hal”? I think that sums it up perfectly. There are people who work so hard on making their outside look great (or what society tells them looks great, really), but they’re empty inside; there’s nothing there. They’ve spent all of their spiritual capital on Botox and Sephora. There are others who don’t conform to what magazine covers are telling us is beautiful, but their kindness, inner spirit, and generous soul makes them beautiful. It’s a balance.

However, in the wake of COVID-19, we found it only fitting to recognize the true spaces in which the world has been spending its time–the home.

In some cases, makeshift, and in others, picturesque dwellings, the home office has become the most sought after for design tips and renovation tricks. So, how can you create a Sophisticated Space in the comfort of your own home?

Interior design experts, Yelena Gerts and Holly Volpe, are no strangers to adorning a home office. BELLA spoke with each of the designers to get their unique and very different opinions on what goes into designing a space for both creativity and productivity. Both Yelena and Holly design spaces that are equal parts comfortable and stylish, while exhibiting contrast and distinction between their individual styles, palettes, and techniques.

With an extensive background in the luxury retail market, she is known for cutting-edge style and elegant designs. Yelena’s talented eye for color and unique details sets her apart with her clients and helps them achieve their dream homes.

As a sought-after interior designer and successful business owner, what got you started in interior design?

After spending 15 years in luxury cosmetic industry, I decided it was time for me to do something I really loved and go after my dreams to be a designer. I always wanted to be one, I just didn’t know which kind. I tried fashion design, flower design, event design, products design, and a bit later realized I truly wanted to be a lifestyle interior designer, where I could incorporate all those elements into one to create beautiful, comfortable, stylish, luxurious, and functional spaces for my clients.

With the recent transition to working from home offices, have you seen an uptick in design inquiries on how to create, decorate, or renovate at-home workspaces?

Yes, of course, we have all seen a shift in our lifestyle and especially in the way we live and work. Comfort and function will be a leading factor in every space. Multifunctional rooms will be the key to every design. I have designed many spaces as such and received many messages during the quarantine how much my clients appreciate and enjoy them during this difficult isolation. My recommendation is to try to make each room to have a dual function.

What are a few of your favorite design tricks or furnishings for creating an ideal home workspace?

I like to use a picture frame for a TV on the wall. They look like beautiful artwork, and they can be used as a computer screen and TV at the same time. [I also recommend] built-in units that are multifunctional—from built-in refrigerators to invisible television lifts if you are limited in wall space…[also,] Murphy beds and that whole concept of resource furniture.

Is there a trend you have noticed when styling home offices?

I love warmer tones for home offices, from dark hues to warm beige undertones. I love to incorporate items of personal use, such as favorite books, gifts, photos, art, awards, and blueprints, while also mixing textures and materials, paints with wallpapers, etc.

Could you give any tips or advice on how to easily or costeffectively transform a home office with just a few modifications?

If you have an extra room in your home and you’re not sure what to do with it, make it a “DOFFICE”— den/office/guest room/playroom. Place a pullout sofa and a desk in the guest room. Add multiple small storage ottomans for toys that can be moved easily if you need to work in front of the television. It’ll be an office by day, guest room by choice, movie theatre by night, playroom by necessity.

As a sought-after interior designer and successful business owner, what got you started in interior design?

Interior design was always brewing within me from the time I was a little girl; I just didn’t realize it. I always kept my bedroom organized and clean and wanted it as pretty as I could get it. Later in life, my career took me into the business field, but I always had an attraction to making the space around me comfortable, functional, and beautiful. I would go into business meetings and be more interested in the office space’s layout, color, and art than I was in the meeting itself. It started to become even more apparent to me when I was designing my first home and loving every part of it—I could do whatever I wanted. Friends and family would tell me I missed my calling.

I always had an eye for design, it just took me a little longer to figure it out. So, when I started my family, I left the corporate world and went back to school part-time while I was raising my children. I knew when I returned to the workforce, I would be doing what I absolutely loved, or nothing at all. The minute my youngest was in school, I opened my business, and here I am.

With the recent transition to working from home offices, have you seen an uptick in design inquiries on how to create, decorate, or renovate at-home workspaces?

That’s an interesting question. I think it’s going to be more of a topic after all of this settles, because as you’re restructuring how you’re doing business, it becomes more obvious that you just might not have the ideal setup at home.

If you’re accustomed to working from home, you most likely have a dedicated space already, and if not, you’re winging it. I will bet there is going to be a spike in requests from clients, not just for office space, but also for other rooms in their homes. When you have nothing but time to walk around your home, there’s a good chance you’re going to notice things you’d like to change that you normally wouldn’t have.

What are a few of your favorite design tricks or furnishings for creating an ideal home workspace?

To be the most productive version of yourself, your workspace needs to be comfortable for you. Everyone’s needs are different, but one thing is certain— remove the clutter and chaos and you will find clarity. When you dress up and show up to a dedicated, comfortable space, only good things can happen.

If this is new for you, start by carving out a spot that’s away from any distractions. Also, make sure the surface you’re using is cleared off, with just the essentials of what you need. Utilize a comfortable chair, and if possible, position yourself with a view that’s pleasing, not distracting. Ideally, your back should be facing the wall—you shouldn’t be looking at it. Creativity and energy flows much better when it isn’t shut off.

Is there a trend you have noticed when styling home offices?

Home office design has become as unique as the individual. Clients are looking for office spaces that are more aesthetically pleasing to them than in the past. Gone are the days of the clunking, wood furniture pieces. We are designing them as complete rooms, equipped with everything from a desk, table, and chairs, to casual seating areas for reading. We are also carving out workspaces in living room areas. In either case, they are designed in such a way that they are masked to fit in with the surroundings in the home.

Could you give any tips or advice on how to easily or cost-effectively transform a home office with just a few modifications?

A cost-effective way to create a home office space is to pick a spot in a room, clear away the clutter, and add the basics, like a desk, lamp, and comfortable chair. Next, personalize it with items that make your heart sing, and you’re all set. You can then build off of that as much as you like.

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF CREATION WITH

getting to know ori Amos has been tending the fire of musical creation and personal expression for more than four decades, and in her new book, “Resistance,” she delves deep into the inspiration behind her work—how it has been shaped and molded by not only her personal experiences, but also by responding to world crisis and the sociopolitical climate globally.

Indeed, Tori’s music has spoken to the human condition of millions of fans around the world. She writes and performs with fierce intelligence and thoughtfulness, slams us a powerful femininity that breaks all barriers, and forges a path forward for so many. Her book is coming into the world at a very important time. We have been navigating the crisis of a virus that has ravaged us physically, emotionally, financially, and mentally.

There has been a deep call to all of us—the heroes on the front lines of medicine and logistics, and also the artists and creators. The mantra of “Resistance” is to “out-create destruction.” Although written by Tori before the start of the pandemic, her words speak to a fragility of how we have operated even up until this point. The balance of creation and destruction is such a historic battle, it recalls a story as far back as ancient mythology. Individuals have been fighting for rights our entire existence, and these rights not only apply to our basic human needs, but the right to freely create and express ourselves.

In her exploration of the topic, Tori discusses the plight of many creators, but specifically those in Russia.

“Russian artists have really talked to me about how the news can be so dreadful, so overwhelming, and there is grief. Understanding what they go through on a daily basis as Russian citizens, particularly if they identify as LGBTQ because it's against the law there—[is important],” she explains. “What they have said to me is that creative paralysis can happen before you know it, and it's about finding ways to break through that and plant those seeds, realizing that someone will need their art in maybe three or four months time on the other side of this.

I sat down with Tori to discuss her book and explore the concept of creating in a time of crisis…

I'm in the middle of farm country in Cornwall, England. I see more animals than people usually when I am here. This is my husband's casa, and this is where the recording studio is. So you can kind of add those two up to figure out what I'm up to.

Before the crack of dawn [here], I hear tractors and the farmers.

They're not giving up. They're going to plant, and they've been called to action too. So yes, if the farmers are planting their seeds, the artists can be doing that too.

In your book you discuss collective trauma, which takes on a new meaning in the light of current events. How do you describe the collective trauma right now, and how can you visualize the healing process?

I think that along with the anxiety, which is fine, we have a little cry and then say, 'OK, I've had my cry today because the world I knew [in the past] is not the world I'm living in.

And I don't really know what the world will look like, because a lot of the freedoms we knew several weeks ago—have they been suspended? Or will they still be in place in a different way, in an authoritarian way, whereby it can be justified that we have less freedom and less democracy?' And that's the question.

For artists, I think there's a lot to write toward; it's an opportunity for them to really allow themselves to go as deep as they want to go, or to recognize and say, 'Hey, you know, I'm going to get some dance music because some of those people talk about the loss of freedom, and I'm gonna just dance my ass off tonight.' And that's valid too.

This virus is something that people will have to mourn and grieve through— some who have lost their jobs, some who have lost their homes. There’s a lot of loss we will have to deal with,” says Tori, “but I believe it's the writers [and] the artists of every field that will need to mend those broken hearts.”

This time in our lives is a new call to action—a call to stay aware, stay strong, and be visionary. We are faced with a mirror to ourselves, and we must speak to that reflection.

Tori's “Resistance” is an inspiring look at the importance of the artist’s voice, our inner voice, and our responsibility to be true to ourselves. And, as she says, “It’s OK to take some time to dance your ass off too.”

How are you, and where are you right now?

During a time of global crisis as we are experiencing now, there is always the possibility of important matters and policy “slipping through the cracks.” How do you feel we can keep our “True North” when it comes to policy and society during this time?

“

Well, that's a really important question for all of us to answer. Because if we don't have a loved one that's in the hospital right now, or if we are not caring for someone who has [the virus], or we don't have it, then we do not have an excuse to fall asleep and make this a staycation. You get a few days, you can have a staycation for a week, but you cannot keep your eyes off the road—the road of democracy.

One of the great books written, “The Road to Unfreedom” by Timothy Snyder, walks us through how freedoms were lost for millions of people, from Ukrainians to Russians, to so many people. So for you and I and everybody else who isn't on the frontlines fighting the physical virus, it doesn't mean you're not needed. We can be distracted from the trauma and the grief of the loss; it's loss of life, which—having lost my mother—I understand.

What I went through was a very dark time, and I was pretty useless for a little while there. Everybody gets to go through that moment of trauma and then release it, however that is for you. But then we need you back online, awake. Because we can wake up to a world that isn't the one we left.

And democracy was in question anyway. We really need to be watching what the left hand is doing while the right hand is in pandemic on the right over here. A piano player really has to know what the left hand is doing because it can screw with the melody.

During the time of preparing your Peabody Commencement speech, you were in the midst of very intense personal grief. In the book you describe that you were pulling on and applying your 50 years of music training to get through the week. Do you feel that concept of training can be applied to us right now as we are faced with intense emotions and uncertainty?

How do you feel we can we prepare or train ourselves for this and the future?

Well, it's training every day then. For me, dealing with someone's personal trauma helped me become part of the RAINN movement [Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network—the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization]. A girl told me that if she didn't run away, her stepfather would rape her that night as he had the night before. I was going to take her with me, but I was told I'd be arrested if I did that. That propelled me to work with other people at that time—some of the women at Atlantic Records and with Scott Berkowitz who runs RAINN. Together we formed a collective that created RAINN, [which] has been going now for a long time— 25 years in 2019.

And what is that balm? There's so much explosive information coming out every day that is putting people into two states of anxiety and panic. And we understand why—because we haven't dealt with this before. But we have to step into a place of sonic healing, sonic salve.

There are books to be written, there are articles to be written, poems, art, dances to be done. That will, I think, be part of the healing mechanism of the mental side of this.

It’s very interesting right now how we are turning to art and creators of movies, visuals, TV shows, and music. That is what is sustaining our psyche as we deal with solitude at home. It's amazing how art has come up as a driving force to help people's mental state during this time.

…which hopefully will validate all artists. Some are not ready, or haven't felt called, from what I've been told, just because they're trying to process.

Others have been able to say, 'I’m ready to share art, I’m not in a place of darkness right now or dealing with suffering on such a level that I'm not ready to explore that.'

My point is, I didn't know at that time that I had the skill set to stay with something—to "Tori" SS20 Collection be an advocate and support something—for 25 years. During this time, you can find certain skills you didn't even know you had. I believe that sometimes we say to ourselves, 'Well, no, this isn't my area.' But that doesn't mean that at this defining moment, you can’t realize that you have a knack for something. It really is about challenging yourself.

You write about how you approach set lists for your shows with the location and mood of the local community in mind. After 9/11 you were the first performer on “The David Letterman Show,” and you played the song, “Time,” after traveling up and down the East Coast and interacting with American communities that week. With the current world situation, what song or set list would you choose to perform for the world if you were performing tonight?

Well, one of the songs would be the hymn, 'There's a balm in Gilead. To make the wounded whole, there's a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged and think my work is in vain. And then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.’

But what I'm saying is there will be a time—even if you don't feel called right now, or you feel [like you’re] in a state of shock. There's an opportunity for all different kinds of art, and I think it will all be needed—some that will make us laugh and get us dancing again, but some that will write toward the grief. Part of the healing is talking about what it's bringing up in people.

It’s that if we take this opportunity, we don't have to hide from who we really are anymore. And that might be a little cringe-worthy—I cringed a little bit when I realized there are sides to myself I could really improve on. There are sides that are a little tough to look at, so it's a time to jot them down and think, Well, how can I improve on this? How can I be a better listener and hear the needs of people? How can I communicate?

One thing I'm learning, not just in our household but also from what other people are saying via messages, is how people hear. With emails and texting, there isn't tone, so messages can get taken out of context, and then people react, especially during a time like this of heightened emotions.

Is there any calming ritual you're doing at home now that you'd like to share?

I'm cooking a lot now in between developing work. [My daughter] Tash and I love being in the kitchen, but she has university online right now, so there's a lot going on with lectures and stuff. I find my alone space sometimes where I'm not under pressure, and I know that nobody but the four people here are going to taste it, so I'm not going to get a bad review in The New York Times or the Guardian the UK. [Laughs.] The Guardian can’t give me two stars.

One last quick question: Is there anything you still have on your life “to-do” list that you've never done before?

Kick ass and rock out when I'm 80 on a Bösendorfer [piano] in high heels.

or the last three months our country has faced unprecedented times, leaving us no other choice but to navigate through uncharted waters. It has left many of us all but crippled, fighting for our own survival as well as the survival of our families. And as many are trying to adapt to this “new normal,” which includes practices like social distancing, selfisolation, face covering, virtual meetings, and drive-by visits to “see” our loved ones, it seems like it has also given us time to pause and prioritize the things that are truly important in our lives.

That’s why with this issue, popularly known as our “Beauty Issue,” Editor-inChief Vanessa Coppes decided, given the current state of the world right now, to shift our cover in a slightly different direction. What felt most appropriate was to feature the countless women, men, and even children who, along with our medical professionals, are going above and beyond to keep us moving forward.

Those include the restaurant workers who show up day after day to feed their community, the delivery drivers who make it possible for people to adhere to the shelter-in-place orders and still receive the things they need. We also salute the countless employees in our supermarkets and pharmacies, transportation workers, and all of the essential pros working hard day in and day out to keep us moving forward.

Through tough times we’ve seen the beauty of community and the compassion in helping others.

Whether it was a small gesture to assist a neighbor, or donating food or medical supplies to those who desperately need them, the countless ways we are lifting one another up has truly been the silver lining in this otherwise dark time.

What started as a group of a few dedicated volunteers who rode the subways of New York to serve as protectors of everyday law-abiding citizens grew into the “Guardian Angels,” which residents of the Big Apple have come to know and love. In light of the recent pandemic and operating under the motto “We dare to care,” Curtis and the Guardian Angels have been washing and feeding the homeless on the subways of NYC. The Guardian Angels walk up and down the trains first doing wellness checks. They then approach the homeless who live on the train and have them wash their hands with alcohol wipes. The Angels give them a care package with water, food, and wipes. They also use disinfectant and wipe down the areas that the homeless are occupying for their additonal safety.

In 2015, a researcher from the University of Kansas did a complex, in-depth study on men, women, and humor. He discovered that the more laughter a relationship has, the better and stronger it is.

But you already knew that, mainly because you’ve been on dates where no one laughed ever and it was painfully awful. Of course laughter is important when it comes to love. Duh!

Regular, genuine humor permeates any successful relationship.

But the clubs of life can beat down even the happiest among us.

What to do when you’re not feeling the funny so much anymore?

Here are 5 fresh tips (plus a bonus!) to help bring back the laughs— because that’s why you’re reading this in the first place, right?

ALWAYS LOOK FOR HUMOR At times, life can be crazy, frustrating, or just plain dull. Still, funny exists in the strangest of places. Ask a comedian. The calculation goes something like this: Comedy = tragedy + time.

Almost anything is funny once you get some distance from it. Remember when the dog got up on the counter and ate that entire tray of buns you baked for next week’s lunches? You were furious at the time…but now? How about that “intimate” wax job you hoped would be sexy but ended with you limping around like Frankenstein’s assistant Igor for two solid weeks? The sooner (and harder) you can laugh at the silly things that happen to each and every one of us, the better it is for you both.

Find the funny and reap the relationship rewards.

2 3 4 5 ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR FAILINGS (AND BE WILLING TO LAUGH AT THEM) Nobody is perfect but we sure spend a ton of time pretending we are. Every one of us engages in behaviors that are selfish, petty, greedy, thoughtless, mean, and more. And every single time we refuse to acknowledge these failings we make them stronger still.

Maybe you are a sore loser but if you are willing to laugh at the post-game sulk-fests you display every time things don’t go your way, you might be able to laugh a little—or at least dial down the butt-clenching discomfort that usually results from your behavior. That’s more fun for everyone. Don’t take your mistakes so seriously. Try something new: Laugh at your imperfections; it’s the only way they will ever improve.

REMEMBER, TEASING IS GOOD (BUT NEVER MOCK) Teasing each other is a playful, intimate way to relate to someone special. When you share a space with someone, few things are off limits and that is fertile ground for the back and forth light teasing requires. And as long as you’re doing it with love, it’s a great way to keep the personal electricity between you high and sparky. Beware of mockery though. Where teasing is gentle and funny, mockery is harsh, pointed, and never delivered with a smile. Teasing—good, mockery—bad. Learn the difference–fast!

SMILE LOTS (AND MAKE ‘EM SINCERE)

While there isn’t any factual evidence behind the old cliché that a frown takes more muscles to execute than a smile, the ideal remains the same: Smiling is always better than frowning— but only if it’s real. Don’t force it. Everyone can tell a fake smile—that kind of face-frozen, “I’m a hostage to fake emotion” teeth flare some try to pass off as one.

Think happy thoughts to make that grin super-groovy. A real smile is a natural invitation for good news, positive insights, and friendly interactions—not to mention happy looks in return. Greet the world with a sincere smile. You’ll be glad you did!

LAUGH TOGETHER

Laughter does all sorts of important, physical things in your body. It alters your dopamine levels, increases serotonin activity, and can even relieve depression and anxiety. Why not do it together? Watch your favorite comedian or a movie or TV show that makes you both laugh. Laughing together not only doubles the health benefits, it also reinforces the happiness you already share. Plus, laughing together is fun. Fire up Netflix and get searching for some comedy gold you can share.

BONUS TIP: “The Inside Joke”

Remember that time that thing happened, and you two were the only ones who noticed and absolutely died laughing? That’s an inside joke shared between you and yours alone. Hold onto those valuable jewels of one-to-one humor and remind each other of them when you most need a laugh.

DATE YOURSELF FIRST

If you’re home alone and single, take this time at home as an opportunity to soul-search, get to know yourself, and think about what you really want from your future partner. After my divorce 11 years ago, I wrote an article for BELLA entitled, “Date Yourself First.” It was about finding things I enjoyed outside being a wife and mom. I realized that watching sports on a Sunday afternoon at home was one thing I truly cherished. Writing in my journal about my thoughts about dating again was also therapeutic.

This break can be a blessing for you to truly honor yourself and tap into your beautiful inner goddess or god.

T

here is no more profound way to sum up the beauty of giving than the opening lines to the classic 1985 song, “We Are The World.” As we navigate through this unprecedented chapter in history, one thing is certain: Every one of us is essential in this world. Collectively, we have shifted our admiration from movie stars, recording artists, and the rich and famous, and have instead become fans of one another and of those who walk amongst us on a daily basis.

Nurses and doctors around the world have become our frontline superheros.

Walking into life-threatening conditions on a daily basis with little protection, they put aside their own safety and well-being to care for their patients whose lives hang in the balance. With no family or loved ones permitted to be at their loved ones’ bedside, these heroes and heroines have taken on the role of emotional caretakers of their patients as well as their patients’ families. From making joyful updates to reassure families that their loved one is making progress, to heart-shattering calls allowing a family their final goodbye and to let them know the person they love is not alone, these men and women give of themselves in all ways every day.

These are the men and women who have dusted off sewing machines to make protective masks in order to counter the shortage faced by care workers, as well as communities at large. Groups and communities have set up food caravans to shop for and deliver groceries to the elderly who are isolated.

Restaurants and caterers, themselves in danger of losing everything they have built, are providing meals to their communities and frontline workers.

And what about the community members we see daily or weekly, but have never stopped to acknowledge as essential or heroic? Our postal workers and mail carriers, for instance, can now add “pandemic” to their creed, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

Yet, there are others… The neighbor who is our cashier at the supermarket, or the trucker who delivers goods to those markets. For some it was what they did for a living, or a parttime position to bring in some extra money for necessities or to save for family vacations. Now those workers have quite literally put their health and well-being on the line to ensure our pantries are stocked.

And what about the food pantries? Record numbers of families can no longer afford to put food on their tables. Who stocks and runs those? Who is there to load the cars to provide those in need with a nourishing meal they once took for granted but no longer can afford? Volunteers: Men, women, young adults, and teenagers standing with bags of groceries and a smile to help alleviate the fear of not knowing where or when your family’s next meal will come.

With their ranks growing thinner due to their exposure to COVID-19, EMS workers, police officers, and firefighters continue to answer desperate calls despite the added risk due to a shortage of proper protection. Their oath to do what they must, despite being stretched to the limit, remains a promise they also continue to uphold. Under any circumstance their job is dangerous— now more than ever as they face an enemy they cannot see.

What we bring to the table as individuals and as a society is essential. It always has been. In the past, some have stepped forward in ways others may have wanted but could not. Work, family responsibilities, and time constraints didn’t allow many to give fully in ways outside of their day-to-day lives. But now, what we are seeing is the beauty of giving on a grand scale. And, in the fear and darkness of this unknown chapter, hope always floats because of those who give.

But what about the men and women who we have never been categorized as heroes, who stepped up to ensure the needs of their communities are met?

These people have given us a sense of normalcy under circumstances that are anything but “life as usual.”

“It’s true we’ll make a better day, just you and me.”

It will show we were, have always been, and will always be essential.

ttention—all heroes! Our universe has just been invaded by one of the most dastardly super villains known to mankind: Coronavirus.

This terrible fiend is preying on all human beings—shutting down non-essential businesses, ransacking family get-togethers, and creating a six-foot distance between even the closest of friends. In addition to the incredible doctors, nurses, and first responders who are working tirelessly to defeat this slimy scoundrel… we need your help!

Award-winning comic book artist and celebrated film director Graig Weich is counting on you to do just that. “You can be a superhero and save lives by staying home,” says Graig, in one of his recent posts. The talented virtuoso has taken to social media to not only discuss the dangers of COVID-19, but to educate his followers on how they can help stop the spread of the vicious virus as well.

the point, they are all so far ahead of me, but then I remembered the obstacles that superheroes faced. They didn’t give up, and thus neither would I. I then spent every night after school redrawing every single page out of every master artist’s book I could get my hands on. Thousands of pages I drew, learning everything possible to improve…then something magical happened a year and a half later. I became the first and one of the youngest artists to be hired to draw the pinup art for one of the #1 top selling independent comic books of all time: Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn #30” by Image Comics (publisher of “The Walking Dead”).

Todd and I shot a video recently on my YouTube channel. Superheroes taught me to keep going and to help those in need. That’s why I donate my art every year to different charities to help children and animals in need. Most recently, [it was to] NoKidHungry.org. My art helped feed over 2,500 kids! My fictional superheroes actually helped people in real life, thus making them real in a way.

Can you tell me a little more about the new content you’ve been creating during the coronavirus pandemic?

I began posting videos from my art studio on my social media showing my superheroes in the background. I was trying to update and share as much info as possible because I noticed that there were sectors of teens/young adults totally ignoring governmental warnings and authoritative figures by not wearing masks or practicing social distancing.

Sketching since he was just 2 years old, Graig has created a marvelous world of superheroes for all ages to enjoy.

Using his platform as a way to inspire, the artist has built a large following of comic book connoisseurs who are more than happy to do their part during these troubling times. Despite the pandemic’s pause on printing and distributing, Graig has gone completely digital, continuing to bring smiles to both the young and young at heart.

Many people I personally knew were not taking it seriously. I realized I could try to reach them because they are more likely to listen to someone they feel is a friend. ‘If the comic book superhero creator guy wears a mask, maybe we should too!’

BELLA connected directly with Graig about superheroes, creative new content, and his time spent in quarantine.

“Listen” in…

How have you been staying motivated while in quarantine?

It’s been hard with so much death in the air here in New York and around the world, but I kept reminding myself of my responsibility to keep creating content to inspire and motivate kids and the kids within us all.

How do you define the term “superhero”?

The doctors and nurses risking their lives during the coronavirus pandemic are proof that superheroes exist!

My father, Martin J. Weich, was a medical doctor inspired as a child by superhero comic books. That’s why I create new superheroes—to inspire the next generation of future real-life heroes, doctors, nurses, and others who wish to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

What do you feel it is about superheroes that has the power to inspire both kids and adults alike?

We see ourselves in superheroes—the drive to be more than we are supposed to be, to do more than we are supposed to be able to do, to achieve unreachable goals we’re not supposed to achieve. Superheroes remind us that we can do what others say we can’t.

It’s been proven that superheroes inspire our human spirit’s desire to say to ourselves yes, we can! I’m living proof of it, too. All the bullies who told me I can’t—who said I am stupid to dream—to imagine, they were all wrong because I not only had the belief in my ideas and creations, but pushed myself to learn and study. In fact, I was faced with the most important moment in my life when I was 17... I left high school as the only artist and was praised, but when I went to the School of Visual Arts [for college], everyone was a better artist than I was. I got depressed. I was 1 of 10,000 students who were all better.

I went home and felt like giving up. [I thought], What’s @BeyondComics

Before the pandemic, I found out that I had made my investors a 4x profit in the equity valuation of my company after making some major milestones, such as winning the HBO UAS Award, getting signed by Marvel and DC Comics’ distributors, getting a license deal to turn my creations into action figures (which recently sold out worldwide), and getting signed by an Emmy award-winning TV and film producer to turn my comic books into movies. Those are the things that keep me going through these difficult times.

Are there any new and exciting projects in the works that you can share with us?

Yes! I cast celebrities as characters I draw in my comic books, so it’s like an illustrated movie with real stars. Some names include Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (star of “The Man in the High Castle” and the original and new “Mortal Kombat”), Ice-T’s wife model Coco, and Adrianne Curry (winner of “America’s Next Top Model”). They are featured in my comic book “GEKIDO” (co-created by writer Brandon Wilson), which can be seen at BeyondComics.T V. Their action figures can be seen on my web site as well. They have seamless synthetic skin and 28 points of articulation.

I’m working on nine different superhero movie scripts, including “Ravedactyl,” “Code Name: Justice,” and “Tricity,” just to name a few.

Creating a new comic book universe of new heroes is a dream come true and a lot of work. All new stories, new superpowers, new designs, new everything! DARK CHOCOLATE DIPPED MATCHA GREEN TEA SHORTBREAD COOKIES Servings: 18 Prep Time: 10 minutes + 4 hours chilling time Bake Time: 10 minutes INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), room temperature • 1⁄4 cup granulated sugar • 1⁄4 cup powdered sugar • 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup cake flour • 1 1⁄2 tablespoons matcha powder • 6 ounces dark chocolate • 1⁄2 tablespoon coconut oil DIRECTIONS: 1. In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, and salt until thoroughly combined, about 3 minutes.

2. In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose and cake flours with the matcha powder.

3. With the mixer on low, mix the flour mixture into the butter mixture in three additions, scraping down the sides of the bowl in between each addition.

4. Place shortbread dough between two pieces of parchment paper, flattening it with your hands into a rectangle.

5. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough over top of the top layer of parchment paper until the dough is 1⁄4 -inch-thick.

6. Place on a baking tray and refrigerate for at least four hours or overnight.

7. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cut the refrigerated dough into two-inch circles using a cookie cutter or rim of a glass.

8. Place cut-out cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake the cookies until just golden at the edges, about 10 minutes.

9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on sheets for five minutes before transferring to wire rack to cool completely.

10. Once cookies have cooled, melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil in a double boiler or in the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl for two minutes on 50% power, stirring halfway through.

11. Dip the cookies, allowing the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl or use the tines of a fork to drizzle the chocolate over top of the cookies.

12. Set cookies on a wire rack set over a cookie tray to allow chocolate to set before serving.

Note: If not serving the cookies right away, store undipped cookies in an

airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. Store chocolatedipped cookies with pieces of parchment or wax paper between each one in an airtight container for up to five days.

When you’re up: Return your body to a fully functioning mode, walk with long strides, and swing your arms and legs like a pendulum.

One of the difficulties that our new “Groundhog Day” life creates is a problem with motivation. It is hard to get work done if today looks just like yesterday and tomorrow is promising to look remarkably similar. But instead of thinking of the work you do today for its own sake, think of it as getting you ready to return to the normal world in a stronger position or at least without a backslide.

The way to overcome these problems is to be honest with loved ones about your communication needs and ask about theirs. Realistically, you probably won’t be able to strike a perfect balance, but making the effort should make it much easier to restore these relationships as your world returns to normal.

Keeping your eye on the day after the pandemic will help shift your focus away from the malaise of today and onto what you need to be doing for the future.

The best way to do that is to stick to some sort of a routine. Be reasonable… it may not be necessary for you to wake up at 6am for your non-existent commute, but it will be much easier to get back to doing that if you set your daily alarm for 8am as compared to just crawling out of bed at noon most days.

The smaller the gap, the easier the adjustment back! If you have inadvertently created this problem for yourself, now is the time to start shifting back to a more reasonable middle ground a little at a time so that you don’t have to take a leap on the day you are allowed to head back to the office.

People are also wondering how society, as a whole, will be affected by this experience. Will we all learn to appreciate each other, and in the future prioritize only “the important things?” The answer is that some will, and some won’t. People’s responses will likely be as varied and complex as people themselves. Some really will adopt this life-lesson while others may write this off as a fluke.

The takeaway message in all of this is to be true to yourself. Do what feels right for you and for your family. Capitalize on those things that have become important to you, and most importantly, do not compare yourself to how others are doing it.

PRESENTED BY CARAVAN STYLE STUDIO On Saturday, April 25, 2020, BELLA + ETTWomen partnered with the ladies behind Caravan Style Studio, Janine Just and Claudine DeSola Kraus, who presented a Virtual Open Mic Show to benefit small businesses. The show attracted viewers from around the country, was hosted

by Pink Among Men founder Amy DePaola, and supported various small businesses, including Dune Jewelry, Preventive Measures, Brows by Amna, Styled by Andrea Caprio, Shop Lahive, Martino Cartier, Come Back Daily, and Lifetherapy.

The Open Mic Show also honored Staten Island University Hospital, recognized for all the hard work of its healthcare heroes and frontline workers. SIUH representative Jamie Lynn Homan was virtually in attendance to accept the accolades on behalf of the hospital.

Artist and entrepreneur Ramiro Davaro-Comas, founder of Dripped on the Road, also created a live mural that evening, commemorating the hospital. Using the traditional scrubs color as the background color, Ramiro adorned the canvas with variations of healthcare workers, as well as phrases like "Thank You," "Love," and "Heroes.� The painting will be donated to Staten Island University Hospital.

The year 2020 has evolved in ways we could have never imagined. But just because we are at home, that doesn’t mean life has come to an end. Here is a sextet of influencers with ideas not just to brighten up your day but also to help others.

LEESA ROWLAND Hollywood actress-turned-charitable giver, Leesa is the author of the best-selling self-help/motivational book, “Discovering the It Factor Within You: Developing Your Charismatic Personality,” which is a perfect read while in quarantine. She is also well-known for her work as a philanthropist and animal rights activist—she’s been active with the national non-profit organization Last Chance for Animals for over 20 years, and is the president of the New York non-profit group Animal Ashram, which she founded in 2013. Leesa has spent her at-home time walking her pets, and is also busy exploring themes that will be central to the second book she is currently writing.

LIZZIE ASHER So many people have felt a sense of helplessness with the current crisis. Lizzie Asher, who is more philanthropically minded when the world is spinning on its correct axis, has spent a good portion of her quarantine—yes, making Macchu Pisco cocktails— but also working with several good friends to create a new nonprofit. Cura Collective is based out of their mutual desire to help and make a tangible impact.

While the organization has come to life over many Zoom cocktail meetings, it’s a gratifying extension of the day-to-day work of the five women, who work on philanthropic efforts, the arts, media, and consulting.

Their goal: To identify gaps in the current system and fill them on a need basis.
