It’s officially year three for me at the helm of BELLA Magazine! I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start it than with our fashion issue. What many of us still don’t realize is how much what we wear can actually impact how we feel.

We literally lived this through the pandemic, choosing more comfortable styles because, well, the dressiest place we were going to was our own living room.

We’re slowly coming back to our lives, and fashion continues to play an important role in how we express who we are in the new, more intention-driven reality we are living in.

I couldn’t publish an issue that truly represents BELLA’s new direction of representation if I didn’t include features about Chelsea Werner (pages 66-71) and Grace Strobel (pages 54-58), defying odds and making tremendous strides in the fashion + beauty industries. Even our main cover star, Taryn Manning, has gone from growing up in a trailer park to becoming our style muse for this issue. She is as real as they come, and her story is one you need to learn all about on pages 72-77.

Shoes are my absolute favorite accessory. It’s why you’ll read all about designer Ruthie Davis on pages 60-65. Her sense of style is as high as—if not higher than— her heels, and her BELLA Boss persona is one to learn from and admire. Jewelry is another big staple you’ll see through our fashion spreads from Dune Jewelry + Awaken the Light on pages 20-23 and 24-29.

Congratulations, it's a girl!

“Congratulations, it’s a girl!” was the phrase my sister-inlaw Cristina Lockward heard on August 27, 2011, when her pregnancy ended at 39 weeks.

With tremendous labor pains, she arrived at the hospital and Sofía was born at 1 a.m., the most beautiful baby she had ever seen (and she’s a mother of three other children).

Sofía’s birth brought a strange silence in the delivery room, her crying was not, as they say, ‘conventional,’ it was a late warning that something was not right. That night, Cristina was not informed of her daughter’s condition.

The next day, the doctor and her husband (my brother) told her there was a ‘good chance’ that Sofía had been born with Down syndrome.

The following days were difficult, and in tears they received the final results: Sofía had been officially diagnosed.

Cristina tried at first to give thanks because her daughter was special, and as everyone told her, “God only gives special children to those who are special.” But she really never understood this; for her—as moms know—all children are special!

After several weeks, she decided to understand and deal with what was happening. As with any other situation that she had dealt with in her life, Cristina searched for information. She made a list of things she and my brother needed to evaluate to make sure Sofía was physically well: heart, hearing, eyes, thyroid, hips, neck, spine, and more. She went to every specialist available, explaining and repeating her condition. As she explains, it was all a form of therapy.

This year, celebrating my beautiful niece’s 10th year, Cristina tells herself, “Congratulations, it’s a girl!” And congratulations to our family, as we have been one of the few awarded ‘the secret of life.’

Thanks to Sofía, we’ve come to understand the marvel of the human spirit, how amazing it is to breath, to see, to hear, to speak… how important it is to creep, crawl, walk, and, above all, how amazing we are as we learn and develop.

We learned that we are not born with a silver spoon in our mouths, but that with happiness in our hearts, it beats.

We’ve learned we don’t need to seek anything outside of what we already have. We are born breathing, seeing, and hearing, and even those who cannot can develop other capabilities that are equally or more important.

Thank you, God! “It’s a girl” that will play, learn, develop, and above all, be loved by her family who understands her needs and strengths, who sees in her the desire to learn and will never put limits on what, like any other human, she can achieve.

Sofía’s first year of life was one of the most valuable ones we have had as a family. It was a year especially revealing, a year to understand how ‘special’ we are.

I dedicate our October special edition Fashion Issue to my beautiful Sofía, so that she and others like her can see what is truly possible for them.

Fall is here—a new season, new beginnings! What better time to fall in love, especially as safe, in-person dating has resumed?

While the perfect first date outfit is really a personal choice, the trending fall 2021 fashions offer chic and polished options for all to try. Going on a brunch date?

DUNE JEWELRY STYLE COLLABS Bringing influential women together in style

By Jennifer DeCillis Holly Daniels Christensen is the founder and CEO of Dune Jewelry & Co., a bootstrap entrepreneur, an advocate for giving back, and a unifier of powerful and influential women. Besides hosting “Kitchen Table Talks,” a 30-minute live show on Facebook and Instagram, Holly recently celebrated the opening of her first branded retail boutique on Cape Cod. As if the balancing act of entrepreneur managing multiple endeavors while also being a dedicated wife and mother wasn’t enough, Holly has been shaking things up with like-minded female powerhouses in fashion, beauty, wellness, and entertainment to create unique and individualized jewelry collections.

That’s why it was natural for Holly to dream up all of these collaborations over the years. “I love bouncing ideas back and forth and creating together.”

really feeds that part of me. Fashion is storytelling at its best. Also, when I’m surrounded by creative energy it helps to replenish and expand my own ideas and that keeps me inspired.

Where do you derive inspiration for your designs and for your new line of candles (perfect for fall!)?

I draw inspiration from so many places—my team, my collaborators, my daughters, other designers that I love, and especially from our customers. I love how lively our community is. They have plenty of opinions and aren’t afraid to share them via social media. Some of the ideas that come in are a hard pass for different reasons, but oftentimes they’re fantastic ideas that simply need cultivating.

Most recently a customer wanted hairpins created with beach sand to incorporate into her destination wedding hairstyle. I think that’s a great idea so I’m working on developing those designs now for next year. I highly recommend listening to your customers and executing what they ask for whether it’s customer service- or designrelated. It helps to build trust. It lets them know that there’s a real person behind the brand and not a bunch of suits deciding what’s trending next year.

What do you love most or find most exciting about working in the fashion industry?

I’ve always loved people and discovering new energy, which is what makes the fashion industry exciting. There are so many interesting stylists, designers, editors, models, and artists that I’ve met who use fashion to express themselves without ever saying a word.

Everything is wonderfully visual, which I love. I’m a person who can sometimes find it difficult to express myself verbally, and I’ve always believed that actions speak louder than words, so the fashion industry

The women you have collaborated with are all wavemakers and influential in beauty, fashion, and the arts. What attracted you to working with each of them specifically?

With Camille Kostek, it was love at first sight, and I really didn’t know how much we would click until that first shoot. She showed up to this run-down beach shack that I had rented (due to budget restrictions), and she was just ready to work. She was totally professional and full of positivity and personality,

which made the shoot not only fun, but the photos were amazing.

That’s what compelled me to ask if she’d be open to collaborating on a collection together. When she said yes, I was elated. I’m still just as excited every time we work on new projects together because she brings a lot of light and spirituality to every moment, which shows through in the designs.

With every collaboration, something new and special is brought to the Dune brand. Nicole Michelle is this young powerhouse singer with a fresh take on fashion. Her Reach for the Stars Collection says it all. There are no limits if you’re willing to work hard and follow your dreams. Nicole is a joy to work with and I love watching her talent grow.

The Hamptons Rope Collection by Ann Liguori presents quintessential Hamptons style that can be worn for a day of boating or at a black-tie affair. I love how versatile it is, and Ann herself is an absolute force. She’s an incredible sports radio and TV personality, and is so well-traveled. I love keeping up with her adventures on Instagram where she collects sand and earth elements from all over the world while visiting the most iconic golf courses.

Tiffany Rice became a friend first and then we started brainstorming about how we could work together. Tiff is an extraordinarily talented spirit medium who helps to connect us with loved ones who have passed. Our first design together naturally became the Cardinal Necklace because when you see a cardinal in nature it is said to be a loved one who has passed.

They’re stopping by to say hello and let you know you’re not alone. Tiffany’s Third Eye Chakra Necklace was our first ever limited-edition design that sold out within days. I’m really looking forward to creating more with Tiff in the future.

Last, but not least, my newest collaboration is with New York stylist Dy’amond Breedlove. We met on a photo shoot for Nicole Michelle and Naughty by Nature, and I remember being so impressed by her attention to detail and complete devotion to fashion. Every time you see Dy’amond she will turn your head with her personal style that she consistently carries into her professional style. Her Breedlove and LOVE22 designs are the most avant-garde pieces we’ve ever introduced to the brand, and I’m really proud of what we’ve created. We enlisted the help of Rhode Island designer L.M. Conte to bring Dy’amond’s visions to life and the outcome is everything we dreamed of.

Why is it important to you to collaborate with other female entrepreneurs and business owners?

Females keep humanity evolving and we deserve a seat at every table. I’m very passionate about giving women the opportunity to express themselves through my brand, and I’m lucky that my audience is loyal and just as passionate about meeting new creators. As women, we should always be lifting each other up.

Competition is natural, but there is enough room for all of us to succeed–I promise.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK MAKEUP LOOK Deck of Scarlet was behind the gorgeous makeup looks spotted on the Alice + Olivia NYFW Fall/Winter ‘21 “runway”— all inspired by “Gossip Girl.”

Classic plaids, tweeds, and houndstooth feel brand new mixed with denim and vegan leather and accessorized with regency glamour-inspired pearls and lace, sumptuous updos, and bold romantic makeup.

Here, lead makeup artist for Deck of Scarlet, Jessi Butterfield, shares how to get the look: After prepping the skin, I went straight for eyes. The look is a really tough rock ‘n roll smoky eye, so I love to get right into it. First, I used the Deck of Scarlet Kajal Eye Pencil in Black Magic. Completely line the upper and lower eye—don’t be shy. It doesn’t have to be perfect because we’re going to smoke it right after. After you feel good about the rims, use a tight pencil-like brush to buff the product up and out. Continue building your shape until you encompass the entire eyelid. Follow up with a fluffy eyeshadow brush this time to create a soft focus finish.

Next up is eyeshadow. This look is really bold and black. To get it all the way there I pressed the Deck of Scarlet Eyeshadow in Last Call into the Kajal with a tightly packed flat eyeshadow brush. Then, I blended up and out with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. I also used the Deck of Scarlet Metal Leaf Shadow Pot.

To make sure there wasn’t any gap at all between the lashes and the eyelid, I used the Deck of Scarlet liquid eyeliner in between the lashes for a bold impact. Finally, I added several coats of the Deck of Scarlet Mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

After the eyes, I kept the skin fresh and glowing by applying the Deck of Scarlet Skin Gloss in Nymph. I love to apply this with clean fingers on the high points of the face for an ethereal glow.

I also applied the Deck of Scarlet [Mis]take Proof Blush to the cheeks with the Deck of Scarlet Double Take Face Brush.

STROBEL Defying odds and living a life of grace and purpose

wenty-four years ago, doctors had a rather grim prediction for a then-baby Grace Strobel, one her parents, Linda and Jeff, refused to accept. Born with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21, Grace’s family was told their daughter would be faced with a lifetime of challenges.

From day one, the Strobels were committed to showing the world just what their beautiful baby girl was capable of, and embarked on a journey to make that happen. Fast-forward, and not only is Grace defying the odds set for her all those years ago, she’s living a life of purpose, breaking down perceptions and barriers, and leading by example.

of whether she wanted to do something to make a difference, the answer was simple.

“I wanted to share with students what it’s like to have struggles and to show how you can change someone’s life just by being kind and giving respect,” explains Grace.

What Grace and Linda could not have predicted was just how much of a change was about to happen. Their research for #TheGraceEffect would lead Grace down a completely new and unexpected path.

Grace’s mantra, to “keep following your dreams,” is something she continues to do each and every day. Her commitment to paving the way for other young people with disabilities is nothing short of amazing.

These days Grace is making waves in the fashion industry as a model for various brands, as well as being named the first U.S. model with Down syndrome for a skincare line. As brand ambassador for Obagi’s SKINclusion campaign, Grace is showing the world her abilities.

Having experienced what she describes as a “devastating” bullying experience in 2017, Grace turned her pain into purpose and created #TheGraceEffect, an informative and interactive presentation that aims to educate students and raise awareness for the everyday struggles people with disabilities face.

All of her hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. This past September, Grace was part of a group of women chosen to receive the Women of Achievement Award in her hometown of St. Louis. The prestigious award is the oldest ongoing program in the area whose sole mission is to honor and recognize the volunteer efforts of women.

After a conversation with her mother, the two realized change needed to happen in order to prevent Grace’s friends and other people living with disabilities to have to endure similar experiences. Faced with the question

getting to know As a young girl, what were some of your aspirations?

My younger sister, Lanie, inspired me. She is a dancer, and I always wanted to be on stage and in the limelight, just like her. I love being on stage!

Against the odds, you’re breaking down stereotypes and showing the world your abilities. How does it feel to know you’re setting an example for others?

It feels awesome! I think my modeling and speaking show people what is possible and help others to believe in themselves.

Oftentimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand, especially kids, which is what happened to you in that lunchroom back in 2017. Can you share what was going through your mind?

About three years ago I was working in the lunchroom at school, and some kids started making fun of me. When they laughed at me that day I felt alone and hated. I cried so hard I couldn’t stop; I died inside. And that is when I decided I wanted to make a difference.

Out of your pain, you created #TheGraceEffect.

Tell us about the interactive presentation.

#TheGraceEffect is a 45-minute presentation I give at schools that teaches kids about having struggles, kindness, respect, and belonging. We work on activities with the students for balance, vision, and fine motor skills, like buttoning up their shirts with gloves on.

We also talk about having low tone, which is when your muscles are loose and it takes more energy to move your body and those muscles. We call the kids up and we say, sit down on this regular chair and now get up. Then we say sit down on this beanbag chair and put this backpack on, cross your arms and now get up. It’s hard for them; they struggle. Low tone is not about strength, but about energy—the energy to move your body. We also ask them to look through binoculars and walk across the top of a BOSU ball, which is hard.

It takes courage to stand up in front of a room full of people. How does it feel when you’re doing these interactive presentations?

The first one I did I felt really nervous and I didn’t want to do it. I started crying when I saw the kids coming in, but I went up there and I did it. And now I love speaking to students. It’s exciting for me and it’s fun.

What do you hope the students take away from listening and participating?

That no matter who you are, we all want the same things— to be valued, to be respected, and to feel good about ourselves.

How have these presentations helped you?

Sometimes our biggest sorrows become our greatest achievements.

My presentations have given me a voice–it’s about making people feel valued, represented, and included. I feel proud!

You’ve also started modeling.

How did the opportunity come about?

When I was researching for the presentation, I saw another girl with Down syndrome that was a model and I asked my mom if I could be a model too. She said, “I don’t see why not—let’s do this, Grace!” So we started on this amazing journey that brought me here today. I was also inspired by Karen Gaffney and Lauren Potter from “Glee.”

Last October you were named Obagi’s SKINclusion ambassador.

How did the partnership come about?

In 2018, I had just started in the world of modeling and had no one representing me. My mom tried many agencies but I couldn’t get signed. Fortunately, I had already appeared on the “Today” show and had several national stories about me, so my mom became my agent.

She saw the Obagi campaign with Priyanka Chopra and sent a letter to the company’s president, Jamie Castle, along with my story and photos. We later found out when she opened our envelope she told her staff, “I want Grace to be in our campaign.” When we got the response from Obagi, my mom and I were jumping up and down screaming!

getting to know I want others to live unapologetically and feel good about themselves, and Obagi’s mission fuels that and gives me a voice to make a change. I’m working on some more exciting initiatives with them that will be announced in early October—stay tuned on my Instagram page!

Do you think the fashion and beauty industry is starting to become more diverse and inclusive?

I think doors are starting to open more, and I love it. But my family and I would love to see more people with disabilities being represented. With exposure, we can create change because we are all part of this amazing, diverse humanity.

Along with Obagi, you’ve also worked with brands like Alivia.

What others would you like to work with?

I’d love to model for Louis Vuitton, Hollister, Calvin Klein, and even Versace.

Congratulations on the Women in Achievement award. What does this mean to you?

I’m so honored, and it means so much. It feels so good to turn pain into purpose and help others.

What’s up next for you?

I would like to keep modeling and speaking, and I’d also like to get into commercials.

If you could give your younger self a bit of advice what would it be?

Keep following your dreams! Go for it and never give up.

Bold, sexy,

empowering, and bright

are just a few of the words to describe a Ruthie Davis shoe created

by Ruthie herself. As one of the few female women’s shoes designers in the United States, she has elevated our shoe game and taken footwear to a whole new level.

Ruthie’s love of shoes began at a young age, however, becoming a shoe designer was not on her radar. As an athlete, the future designer’s focus was on sports, with the dream of becoming a downhill ski racer.

“I always dreamed big, of doing something awesome,” she explains.

“I didn’t just dream of being a ski racer, I wanted to be an Olympic skier and win medals.”

Ruthie’s passion and drive for whatever she focused her talents on is what led to finding success with companies like Reebok, UGG, and Tommy Hilfiger. Known for taking a great shoe and making it more relevant is just one the many traits that sets Ruthie apart. She did it with UGG, making the brand, which was originally based on the West Coast, not only fashionable, but East Coast-relevant.

At Tommy Hilfiger, Ruthie took her job a step further and launched an entirely new division under the company’s umbrella, Tommy Girl Shoes, designing styles that were a bit younger and hipper.

“Every corporate job I had I thought of it as my own,” says Ruthie.

“From day one, I started planning to have my own company. I did very entrepreneurial things that were beyond my job description.”

Fast forward to 2006, as Ruthie stepped away from the corporate world to launch her eponymous brand. She hasn’t looked back since. Right out of the gate, Ruthie’s shoes combined the two schools of thought she has always loved—the sportiness of a sneaker and the fashion of a high platform heel.

To this day, Ruthie continues to remain true to that concept, along with sharing her knowledge by giving back to the community she loves dearly.

BELLA recently sat down with the woman who has taken fashion footwear to the next level to talk about all things shoes, which just so happen to also be one of our favorite accessories!

What is it about shoes that fascinate you?

I realized at a young age that shoes made a huge difference in a functional way. As an athlete, I had a lot of shoes for my sports, and I understood the differences and how they worked. I also loved how shoes make you taller, they affect the architecture of your body, they transform you. I’ve always been about the lines, and fascinated by the proportions of things.

As a creator, from where do you derive your inspiration?

The 70s is my favorite time period, mixed with a hightech futurism. I’m inspired by mid-century modern architecture, the lines, and the minimalism. But the number one thing I’m inspired by are real people and what they’re wearing. That’s why I like living in New York City—I walk everywhere, and I am constantly looking at what people have on, how they put it together, and why. It’s important for me to understand the entire outfit so I can design a shoe that works in the context of the outfit. I’m really a street brand as I take my number one influence from the streets.

When it comes to designing, which part of the process do you enjoy most?

I love a lot of different aspects, and as a brand, there are different stages. I like the stage I’m at now. I have a lot of proven styles, and it’s not like every season I’m starting from scratch and making new patterns. I’m coming up with different ways to make things fresh and relevant.

I’ve had those really cool designs, but they didn’t always sell well. While they looked great in magazines, real people weren’t buying them. Now I’m about what my customer wants, and they don’t necessarily want me to reinvent the wheel. They may just want the season’s new color or material or a tweak to update their favorite style. This is what excites me now—fine-tuning the product to make it better, not a completely new version. Sometimes less is more.

What do you hope a Ruthie Davis shoe will do for the person wearing them?

I want people to feel good in their own skin, to feel empowered, happy, strong, and beautiful. As a woman designing for women, I test-drive all of the shoes. Most brands like mine are designed by men; they don’t wear the shoes, I do. I design a shoe that doesn’t hurt and that makes the leg, foot, and ankle all look pretty. It’s my job to make you look and feel amazing.

As we head into fall, what styles and trends have you excited?

I’m very excited about fashion right now. I think there’s a lot of great [things] to come out of the pandemic.

People are excited to be back out, and they’re taking that little bit of extra time to look even more stylized.

I’m seeing a lot of dresses paired with designer sneakers; people want to keep the comfort that they had, be chill and laid back, while still looking glam and polished.

up close + personal We’re also seeing a lot of stylized outfits, from the bag, to the jewelry, and the hair…it’s those editorial head-to-toe looks, and that’s my favorite trend right now. Accessories are also making a comeback, and along with that is a huge opportunity in footwear to really innovate.

It’s an exciting time for shoes to step up and step out.

And people are excited to step up their game. They want the bright colors and the neons, and while fall usually gets more muted with the blacks and browns, I don’t think that’s going to happen this season.

How do you define success?

I see success as running a profitable, well-managed company, loving what I do, and feeing good about it. It’s not about being a famous shoe designer, that’s not my definition of success. Personally, I don’t subscribe to “bigger is better.” I’m about quality of life, not quantity.

Success is really where you’re happy in your day. I want to be doing something where I feel excited to get up and inspired to do it.

What lies ahead for you and the Ruthie Davis brand?

I always know there are exciting things happening because that’s how I operate.

I’m focused on the present, continuing to do what I’m doing right now while servicing my customers, keeping my business profitable, selling shoes, and marketing my brand.

I’m not so much thinking future as much as present and really continuing to get better every day.

In addition to your designs, you also collaborate with other brands. Is there someone in particular you’d love to design with?

I think my dream would be a brand like Moncler.

My first love of fashion was my ski racing outfits—I loved the aerodynamic one-piece catsuits and the fitted down jackets. I would really love to design a whole Moncler outfit and some killer Moncler heels! I think it would also be pretty cool to collaborate with a running shoe brand.

Can you share some examples of how you give back to the fashion community through your teaching and mentorship?

From day one I have given back; it’s part of what I do. I’m a shoe designer, and I pay it forward. Over the years I’ve spoken at numerous schools and universities, I’ve taught classes, and I sit on many committees and panels, all focused on helping students. I also take on some individual mentees, whether it’s one of my students or someone who follows me on social media. I even try and incorporate it into my everyday life, taking time to help the people I work with, even if it’s not a formal mentorship, but to help those who may not be established in their careers just yet—to give them a shot.

My message has always been entrepreneurship and sharing with others how you do it and how you get started. Anyone with a dream who is willing to work hard can do it.

hen we think of people in certain careers, we envision them to look or act a certain way. Models must be tall and thin, athletes strong and powerful. These images have been seared into our minds because of what society has told us, but the truth is they’re just stereotypes.

Chelsea Werner is the perfect example of a woman who has been defying the odds since the day she was born and shining a spotlight on her abilities in an effort to show others living with a disability that anything is possible.

Born with Down syndrome, a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21, the gymnast-turned-model has never allowed obstacles to stand in her way. A positive person, Chelsea doesn’t see things as limitations, rather she tackles whatever it is she’s doing with grit and determination.

“My parents raised me without putting limitations on me,” explains Chelsea. “If I try my best at something, then I’m happy. Everyone is not great at everything and that’s OK.” It’s having that positive attitude and an ambition to be the best she can be at whatever she’s doing that has brought Chelsea the success and happiness she’s found today.

A four-time U.S. Special Olympics gymnastics champion and twotime world champion, Chelsea fell in love with the sport at a young age. Despite having low muscle tone, a problem people with Down syndrome often face, she went on to not only excel at the sport, but earn medal after medal as well.

Being a part of the gymnastics community not only brought Chelsea success in the gym, it also led to some modeling opportunities. And as they say, the rest is history!

At her best when she’s in front of an audience or a camera, Chelsea fell in love with modeling and has now turned her focus on bringing representation into an arena that for a long time has lacked representation.

In just a few short years, Chelsea has appeared in numerous print and digital campaigns for brands like H&M, Aerie, and Adidas. In 2016, she was invited to walk in New York Fashion Week.

Inspired by Chelsea’s journey and her commitment to achieving goals the world assumes you can’t, BELLA sat down with the model and athlete to learn more about the ways in which she is shining a light on the beauty of inclusivity.

You became involved in gymnastics at a young age, but it wasn’t the first sport you tried. What was it about gymnastics that made you want to continue?

I loved having teammates. Once I had my first Special Olympics competition when I was 8 years old, I was hooked. I loved the crowd cheering for me!

Although gymnastics was difficult for you, especially in those early days, you didn’t give up. What was the driving force that kept you going?

I really didn’t take gymnastics seriously at first. Once I found a coach that believed I could be a good gymnast, I started training much harder and began to really improve. And I was getting more attention, which I loved! I also started training with gymnasts who were not in the Special Olympics. I had great role models and much higher expectations.

You defied doctor’s predictions and not only went on to become a gymnast, you became one who competed and medaled multiple times. How does that feel knowing you surpassed the odds and proved those doctors wrong?

I’m very proud of myself. I love that I give hope to those coming up behind me.

Besides the physical skills you learned throughout the years, what else has the sport taught you?

Gymnastics has taught me that hard work pays off, and it has given me a lot of confidence in myself.

Where did you get the nickname “Showtime?”

My dad gave it to me. During competitions you get a little bit of time to warm-up before you compete on each event, and mine were usually pretty bad. Once the judges saluted me and I would compete, I would do perfect routines to everyone’s surprise. When the pressure was on, I was at my best.

Through gymnastics you discovered modeling. How has this whole new path came to fruition?

I was on the “Today” show for something related to gymnastics. H&M saw me and asked if I wanted to model for them. I loved everything about that experience.

You’ve been featured in multiple fashion campaigns and worked with some big name brands. Do you have a favorite?

I’ve loved every campaign I’ve ever done. I just love being a working model.

BELLA insider How does it feel seeing yourself in these campaigns?

I have to admit, it’s pretty exciting. I feel proud and look forward to what’s coming next.

In 2016, you had the opportunity to walk in New York Fashion Week. How would you describe the experience?

It was one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done. I was very new to modeling and absolutely loved it!

You’ve faced many challenges in life, but have worked hard to get where you are. Standing beside you through all of this is a great support system. Along with your parents, whom do you credit with being a part of your “support” team?

My gymnastics coach, Dawn Pombo, has made a huge impact on my life. She never treated me like I had any limitations. She helped me become a world champion.

Through all of the work you do, the consistent theme is dedication and perseverance.

While your followers see you in your success, what they don’t always see is what it takes to get there. Can you share some of the struggles you’ve faced, and how you overcame them?

Right before the pandemic, you signed with Londonbased Milk Model Management, and now that they’ve lifted the quarantine requirement for U.S. citizens, you’re going to be headed across the pond for the month of September.

Can you share what you’ll be doing while there and what are you most excited about for this trip?

Many coaches didn’t consider me a “real gymnast.” They would have low expectations and I was left behind while my teammates would progress up and up. Competing outside of the Special Olympics was very hard for me. I took last place for a very long time. I continued to work hard, and even though it took me a lot longer to acquire advanced skills, it made it that much more of a triumph when I did.

I love traveling and meeting new people. I will be going to castings, doing photo shoots, hopefully some new campaigns, and some sightseeing. I’m open to all opportunities that come my way.

What message do you have for other young people with disabilities who are trying to carve out their own niche?

Seeing models with disabilities has been rare up until this point, but you’re working to change that. Do you feel inclusivity is starting to happen within the industry and that tides are turning when it comes to featuring a wider range of representation?

When looking ahead, where do you see yourself ?

Is modeling something you’d like to continue doing? Are there other goals you have your sights set on?

When I started it was extremely rare. Every year it’s getting a little bit better, but I do think people with disabilities are still very much underrepresented.

or the last three decades, actress, producer, music artist, and songwriter, Taryn Manning, has been captivating audiences on screen and on stage.

She has appeared in such hit films as “Crossroads,” “8 Mile,” “Hustle and Flow,” and “Crazy/Beautiful,” as well as a myriad of TV shows. But it’s her scene-stealing role as Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett in the wildly popular Netflix series, “Orange Is the New Black” (OITNB) that Taryn may be most recognized for.

Within many of the projects she’s been a part of, the versatile actress has taken the complex characters she portrays to the next level, but admits at times it can wear her down. “I put so much of my heart and soul into a character, I wind up feeling bad after for a little bit,” she explains.

Two of her latest films, released this September, are perfect examples.

"Karen" is a thriller about a racist woman who makes it her personal mission to displace the new Black family that has moved into the neighborhood. The second crime-thriller, "The Gateway," delves into issues regarding community, racial harmony, drug trafficking, and families in crisis. Both films tap into a variety of deep social issues, allowing the actress to portray two different characters and deliver powerful performances in the process.

Underneath those multi-faceted roles lies a whole other side to the actress that may surprise even some of her most dedicated followers.

Growing up in a family of entertainers, Taryn was destined to find her way into the spotlight. As a kid, she was heavily involved in martial arts, a sport she says taught her discipline at a young age and stayed with her throughout her life.

What comes as a surprise to many is that she eventually made her way to the stage as a dancer, having trained at the Orange County Educational School of the Arts. “A lot of people don’t know I was a professional ballerina, and I’m pretty proud of that,” says Taryn.

Her creative side runs deep and her longevity in the entertainment industry is not just as an actor but as a successful singer, songwriter, and DJ. With multiple chart-topping hits on her resume, Taryn’s talents truly know no limit.

She currently has a list of films ready to hit the big screen, among them “Karen,” “The Gateway,” and “Every Last One of Them.”

BELLA caught up with the actress to talk about all of her new projects along with the way in which music has influenced her life.

How did your passion for music develop?

My father and brother are both musicians. My dad was in about 15 different bands so I grew up around a ton of music. I’m also a younger sister to a brother and everything that he did was cool. He was all hip-hop, two turntables, and a microphone, so I grew up around a bunch of hip-hop and break dancing.

My brother and I formed a band, and I learned how to play guitar. We still mess around with stuff here and there; he’s amazing and so talented. My band, Boomkat, was signed to Dreamworks and had a good run. It was a lot of fun— we traveled the world touring. That was awesome.

What type of artists influenced you?

I grew up going to the roller-skating rink; I had a lot of energy. There was so much music—R&B, hip-hop, pop… everything from Michael Jackson, to Prince, Whitney Houston, and Cyndi Lauper. Then when I got older I was into Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, Hole, Oasis, and The Cure. I grew up around a lot of Motown, The Rolling Stones, and Janis Joplin. I kind of listen to everything. I just love music.

Are you currently working on some new stuff ?

Yes. I put out music independently now, and I have a bunch of songs I’m going to start releasing.

What’s your favorite style of music to create?

It’s a mixture. I’ll write some stuff on the guitar and then work with a producer that takes it and puts it in a whole different direction. That’s what’s awesome about songwriting. The fundamentals is a guitar or piano, then anything can happen from there.

I’m partial to dance music—I was a raver growing up.

Dance music and EDM is very uplifting and positive. Even being somewhere like Coachella—you look around and everyone looks so happy, their hands are up—it’s spiritual to me.

When I started DJ’ing, and I did that heavily for years, I was contributing to that feeling, and it was rewarding. I prefer to play dance music; I just spin it the best.

You’ve said music was your gateway into acting.

How so?

My brother and I started our band when I was 17, and I would do that after school and after dance class. I had moved to Hollywood to be a dancer, but all the while I was taking acting classes. I wasn’t totally into the dance scene up there, and I had this other thing I loved to do—acting— and I had my band. I was kind of doing everything.

star power Over the years you’ve portrayed a variety of different characters, some heavier than others. When stepping into a new role, how do you prepare?

As I’ve evolved, I’ve found new and different ways of doing things.

Preparing is all different though. I’ll do everything from reading to studying. Acting has been great because I’ve learned so much stuff I would have never known.

I definitely do play complicated characters. I tend to get those roles easier, which can be challenging, like, can I just play a happy person?! I made a conscious effort to not take so many heavy roles because it does wear on me. There have been certain roles my friends and those close to me will see, and they’ll say, “You’re having a tough time shaking that.”

As I get older, I’m tired of dying, tired of killing myself, or seeing a fake drug. I don’t want to take myself too far out of what people are used to, but rather than play the patient in rehab, I’d rather play the counselor in the rehab facility, the one who helps people get better.

For seven seasons you were part of the insanely popular show, “Orange Is the New Black.” What was it like portraying Pennsatucky?

I also support senior dog rescue. I have two senior poodles, they’re called a bonded pair. They came together because one is blind. It’s sad because a lot of animals are neglected or abandoned when they get older and the vet bills kick in. I’ve done a lot of programs where we match up elderly humans with elderly pets, which is so rewarding. Matching them together is so precious.

I also have a cat, Thunderbird, who I rescued when I was working on OITNB. She was at a rescue and every time I went to get dog food I’d see her. I thought, I’ll get her out of there and figure out the next move; now cut to 10 years later. She just recently survived a coyote attack.

People have to be aware because they jump higher than you realize, and they’re hungry right now. It happens quickly. Thankfully I got her to the ER in time and she made it.

When we first saw her, she was a very one-dimensional, crappy person. We didn’t know what to think of this tyrant, and we learned over time what she had been through and why she acted the way she did. But she was still awful.

Over time, Jenji Kohan [OITNB’s writer/producer] started writing similar to who we are as people—not spot-on—but there were similarities that started to integrate through our characters.

The writing was spectacular, and the writers were so generous with me. Slowly, Pennsatucky started changing and the real humanity came out; she realized she was mortal. I think she could have done great out of prison. She had an amazing arc, and it taught me so much.

Away from the camera, you are a huge animal advocate, especially for the rescue community. What message would you like to share?

I support a couple of charities that spay and neuter animals. My whole thing is getting to the source of the problem. We can have adoptions and hope that these animals don’t get euthanized, but the amount of animals in the shelters is staggering, and it is so sad.

I think people have a misconception about how much it costs to get your animal spayed or neutered, so I try and educate people on that.

You have a couple of new films in the works. One in particular, “Karen,” is a crime-thriller that tackles the issue of racism. How did you prepare for this particular role?

I think at this point we’ve all seen this in real life. Even in OITNB, a “Karen” is also known as a snitch. Those types of people don’t go over well in prison, so I knew what the prototype was. It wasn’t hard to study and research this one, unfortunately.

A lot of people have issues with this role, and I completely understand and empathize with all sides of the spectrum. It’s always hard to play something that is relevant to society— it’s so sensitive. But I don’t take on characters irresponsibly.

What did you take away from making the film? What do you hope others will take away?

One thing I took away form the experience—and not even just about the movie, but what we’ve been going through—is white privilege: It is real. My aunt married a Black man in the 1960s, which was very controversial at the time, and had kids. They are my immediate family and I am not prejudiced nor do I have a racist bone in my body, but I can see now so clearly privileges we’ve had as white people. It’s alarming and unfair. I stand with them, and they stand with me. Our hope is to make people more aware of the truth.

n 2017, a study about youth homelessness by Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago revealed that up to 40% of young people experiencing homelessness is part of the LGBTQ+ community. One of the shocking statistics of the study was that LGBT youth were at a 120% higher risk for homelessness. Organizations like New Alternatives serve as a sign of hope for many of these Queer individuals, especially this past year throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Founded in 2008, New Alternatives is a multi-service drop-in center for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults, with services that include case management, meals, psychotherapy, HIV/AIDS testing, and most recently, COVID vaccines. Kate Barber, founder and director, was inspired to create this nonprofit organization after several years of working as a director at Sylvia’s Place, an emergency shelter for LGBTQ+ youth.

The pandemic created many uncertainties this past year, but one thing remained true: New Alternatives’ focus on continuing to serve its community. Despite the lack of resources for homeless individuals, Kate and her team adapted many of their services to fit with the times, from turning their Sunday dinners into pickup food drives or offering counseling services outside.

As they navigate the new normal, New Alternatives is on the frontlines of a new issue—finding housing or solutions for people who are getting kicked out of the hotel housing provided by the state during COVID-19. Currently, advocates are fighting to keep people in hotels or find them new housing instead of putting them back into shelters. In addition, they are focused on finding the resources they need to keep them protected; latest statistics show that only 14% of the homeless population is vaccinated.

Thirteen years after its inception, New Alternatives continues to fulfill its mission of providing tools for homeless youth and young adults to transition out of the shelter system and into stable adult lives. Kate has hired past clients and individuals that have been part of the shelter system.

“They serve as role models for our clients,” Kate says, explaining how they inspire other people going through homelessness to realize that they too can make it out.

Kate had noticed that case management was often tied to housing, as youth moved to different housing programs often.

With most programs lasting only 30 days, they would have to restart the process of working with a new case manager. “There was no continuity,” Kate shares, something New Alternatives aims to resolve through long-term, consistent case management.

Blending her knowledge for harm reduction and experience in drop-in centers, Kate knew she wanted to focus on the youth, a demographic that is often kicked out of programs that may not know how to help them, leaving many without resources to create long-lasting change.

Fall dating trends that are good for relationships

ith fall serving as peak "cuffing season," it’s good to stay on the cutting edge of new dating trends. With most singles enjoying post-pandemic dating as cities worldwide have opened up most restaurants, bars, gyms, and nightclubs to eager daters, these trends can be good for relationships, especially if you’re serious about meeting someone special after a summer of recreation and fun.

The dating app Bumble recently released its list of new dating trends, and I think more than a few are good for today’s relationships. See what you think:

Hardballing This is the new term given to daters who are serious about finding a life partner. Singles dating with purpose and intention do not have time to waste on anyone who's not aligned with their values and goals. When you “date like a CEO," you're not messing around with partners who are not on the same page. Dating can be a bit ruthless for a serious dater who meets someone who shows up late, has inconsistent behavior, or doesn't respond in a reasonable time. You're quick to fire anyone who doesn't live up to your expectations and serve them with exit papers. A Bumble survey of its members explains it perfectly: "Over the past year, almost 70% feel the pandemic has given them an abundance of time to focus on themselves, and 43% shared they have more confidence to say what is and isn't right for them in their dating life."

Slow dating This has become a common trend and dating practice for discerning and health-conscious singles.

Singles are not as quick to rush into emotional and physical connections, as the pandemic has taught people to be more selective and choose partners who will be by their side for the long run. People who slowdate will invest more time in the beginning trying to get to know someone through conversation before meeting in person. In general, things are moving slower as singles are still concerned about the multiple strains of COVID, vaccinations, traveling, etc.

Locdating Not surprisingly, the study revealed that 48% of singles prefer to date locally. They feel more comfortable dating someone nearby. Since there's been an increase in anxiety levels around dating during a pandemic (46%), dating someone local might help take the pressure off with someone you can cuddle and spend time with close to home. As we enter back into our everyday lives and resume some social life, dating locally versus long distance is far more appealing.

Dawn daters During the pandemic, many relationships did not survive. A lot of long-term partnerships ended after being locked down with one another. As the Bumble report notes, "These individuals are now single and ready to start dating again, but many are entirely new to dating apps and understandably anxious about dating right now." With a fresh batch of new daters on the market, the pool has grown with singles who are ready to mingle! I'm working with many coaching and matchmaking clients who are excited about dating for the first time in a long time. They are not jaded or tired from dating apps. They have a great attitude, and are genuinely looking forward to the experience. Unlike many singles that suffer from "ODF"—online dating fatigue—these singles are beginning the next chapter of their dating life, and you get to show them the ropes!

As you can tell from the newest dating trends, singles have a lot to look forward to when it comes to their love life. Many are slowing down, being more selective, and are focused on meeting someone local to spend time with. There's an attitude of dating quality over quantity, and dating with intention. ll relationships have issues, but sometimes they are too big to ignore.

There is an old Russian fable about a scorpion that wants to cross a river. The scorpion can’t swim, so he asks a frog to give him a ride. The frog is nervous, afraid the scorpion might sting him as they cross. The scorpion argues that if he were to sting him, then they’d both drown–so obviously he would never do such a thing. The frog accepts the reasoning, lets the scorpion hop on his back, and the pair set off across the river. Midway, the scorpion stings the frog and they both begin to drown. Totally confused, the dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung him, knowing that by doing so he would surely die as well. The scorpion’s reply? "I couldn't help it. It's in my nature."

It’s one thing to start a relationship with somebody and suffer your way through a few bad habits or weird personality traits, but quite another to invite a metaphorical scorpion into your life and think they are not going to sting you. Certain habits and practices are relationship deal-breakers, or at least they should be. Think I’m wrong? Have a read and decide for yourself.

Do you know 100% for certain that this person is cheating on you with another? Assuming you have done the work and made the (icky) discoveries, you now know for sure that it is real. And if the relationship matters to you, this is the worst news ever. No one likes to be somebody’s fool, and that is exactly what this feels like.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Cheating on someone you are supposed to care about is no small thing. It requires the ability to shut off (or ignore) common morals, personal empathy, and even genuine, human concern for another person.

WHAT TO DO?

Either cheating is acceptable to you, or it isn’t. If not, and they refuse to stop, then there cannot be a relationship.

Anyone truly unable (or unwilling) to choose you above all others is not worthy of your time or effort.

This cannot be about someone eating the last piece of cold pizza you were saving, or who always grabs the best spot on the couch. We are talking about real larceny—like stealing your credit card and transferring money out of your personal accounts. Or maybe someone who takes your stuff, sells it, and keeps the cash. Yes, we mean real, bonafide criminal acts.

WHAT IT SHOWS

When someone engages in objectively illegal behavior, that’s bad enough. When it’s someone you are intimate with, and they are doing it literally to you–well, that’s even worse. Stealing from strangers leads to enough issues for you and your family. Stealing from you is far, far worse.

IS IT REAL?

First off, periodic white lies do not count. We are talking large scale, frighteningly elaborate lies whose only function is to confuse, conceal, or confound any legitimate search for the truth.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Lying is one of those things that absolutely becomes a habit the more one does it. And habitual liars make the sharing of trust impossible. Having an inability to face truth, especially as it relates to someone you love, is a guarantee of relationship strife.

Another no-brainer here...stealing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It will always come back on you somehow. If they will not stop stealing, even when the cost is the loss of you, then their decision—and yours—has already been made. They’ve already stolen too much of your time already.

THE MANIPULATOR IS IT REAL?

In some ways, this is a combination of many things. These people mix lies and half-truths with emotion, and blur clarity with obfuscation. They will gaslight you on things you know to be true and use their influence to make you question reality. The net result usually sees you lost, confused, and helpless without them to lead you forward.

WHAT IT SHOWS

More than anything, a lack of trust. Any person committed to manipulating another does not see them as an equal and prefers relating to them in a state of perpetual helplessness. This is both demeaning and sad.

WHAT TO DO

Shake yourself out of the fog they have created and start nailing down some facts. Get a proper sense of yourself and the relationship you want.

Then, present it to them. If they cannot accept you as a full partner, then they never will. And it’s better to know this sooner than later.

THE HITTER IS IT REAL?

There is no denying this one. Anyone who raises their hand to strike another is committing the most serious and damaging act a relationship can face.

There is no reason—ever—for physical violence. And you know when it is happening.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Physical violence can indicate many different things. It can suggest a lack of self-esteem, an inferiority complex, deep immaturity, fear, frustration, anger, and more. What it never suggests is a healthy, loving relationship.

WHAT TO DO

Zero tolerance is the only course of action. Mistakes happen, but anything over “one” is officially a pattern that does not end well. The only way this continues is if you allow it to. It must stop, and if that means you have to go, then go you must.

WHAT TO DO

Seek the truth and when you find it, hold on with both hands. If they will not—or cannot—agree to living without lies, then your decision is clear. They must go. Truth is the cornerstone of any strong relationship. Remove it, and everything of value collapses.

THE WIMP IS IT REAL?

Always passive, looking endlessly for the path of least resistance, they never stand up for anything or anyone—including you. Their daily mantra is one of avoidance and evasion, side-stepping confrontation at all costs.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Fear, for one. But also laziness, mixed with a significant lack of confidence. A spine that resembles a wet noodle indicates someone more interested in the whims and winds of others than their own beliefs of right and wrong.

WHAT TO DO

If this is something you can help, then you must. But if they are fully committed to a passive, accept-all-things-bend-at-all-costs approach to life, you will very quickly find yourself alone when trouble hits.

Relationships are not for the faint of heart—ever. You need a warrior.

And if they are not willing to start fighting, you need to cut them from the team. Now!

THE BACKSTABBER IS IT REAL?

Everyone knows the feeling. That sting of humiliation when you trusted someone to have your back and they absolutely did not. It leaves you shaken and fearful, unsure of what to do next. You’re also haunted by the worry that your faith was badly misplaced.

WHAT IT SHOWS

Somehow this person can find reasons to choose others–even strangers— over you. They are willing to leave you exposed and unprotected, going against one of the larger reasons to even have a relationship in the first place.

WHAT TO DO

Assuming this was not some one-off, unforeseen occurrence but a pattern of behavior, you need to act. Disloyalty is a sign of many things, and none of them are good. When they choose to stab you in the back, it is only because they are a coward. And what could be worse than being in a relationship with a coward? Show them the door and be sure to follow them out (if only to make sure they get gone).

Braised beef short ribs

When it comes to food, I love presenting a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy. So when the whisper of fall is in the air, comfort food comes to mind along with a beautiful tablescape filled with rich, warm colors complementing textures all set against a pumpkin and sunflower mini “garden.”

To make an ordinary evening extraordinary, use place cards with your family’s names and serve warm tea with a honey spoon. This is sure to make everyone smile as they devour a dish tailor-made for fall.

This quick (or should I say, quicker than usual) braised beef short ribs recipe will give you all the fall feels!

INGREDIENTS: • 2 lbs of beef short ribs • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil • 1 tbsp garlic powder • 1 tbsp onion powder • 1 tbsp dried herbs (Italian seasoning) • 1 tbsp paprika • 1 tbsp Montreal steak seasoning • 1/2 cup short rib braising sauce • 3 dried bay leaves • 1 medium garlic • 2-1/2 cups of beef broth • 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees 2. Heat Dutch oven (a pot that go from stove to oven) 3. Place in your vegetable oil and garlic cloves 4. Pat dry your short ribs, then rub in your seasonings 5. Dust your ribs with 1 tbsp of all-purpose flour 6. Place ribs in pot to brown about 5-7 minutes (you may have to do this in batches) 7. Remove ribs 8. Place in braising sauce, bay leaves, and second tbsp of flour (add more if you want a thicker sauce) 9. Add 1 cup of beef broth and return ribs to the pot while stock is simmering 10. Place Dutch oven pot in oven for two hours, pouring in the remainder of your beef broth halfway through cooking time 11. Dinner is served!

Don’t know where to start? The best way is to tap into YouTube videos that offer binaural beats, which is when the left and right ear receive slightly different frequencies of sound but the brain registers them as a single sound. The difference between those two frequencies is called the binaural beat—a frequency that your conscious mind is unaware of.

Sound baths—the process of “bathing” in the sound that is around you—have exploded in popularity over the past five years. One of the best—and free—sound therapies is time spent in nature. Listening to rain, the crashing waves of the ocean, and rustling leaves are also great for healing. Listening to natural sounds reduces stress, boosts mood, and is correlated with positive well-being. Spend some time in your backyard (if you have one) or go to your local park and just listen to the sounds that fill the air, notice what they are, close your eyes, and take a few minutes to truly tune into the natural world around you. It’s even fun to try this with your little ones as a mindful meditative practice.

Dressing for the NEW

WORLD OF WORK

Whether you have returned to work full time, are continuing to work from home, or are adjusting to a new, more flexible, hybrid schedule, chances are things aren’t exactly as they once were. Much about your workday looks and feels different. Your wardrobe almost certainly does. In fact, a common comment I hear from friends I speak with, clients I work with, or even casual conversations I overhear in passing is: “I have nothing to wear to the office; all I now own are sweatpants.”

For many people, the many months of being at home, despite extensive online shopping, did not produce a wardrobe they could wear outside the home. This is supported by the number of memes commemorating how sweatpants and pajama pants have risen to power and are now masters of the wardrobe.

For most people, being home equates with being comfortable, and they feel entitled to wear the attire that facilitates that comfort.

But is there a downside to the culture of loungewear, or should we never bother getting dressed up again if we can get away with it?

I

t might seem that having to worry about what to wear is a stressor that the work-from-home culture has reduced substantially. People wear what they want, feel more comfortable, and can focus on the important things. However, humans are creatures of habit. When the start to each workday looks the same regardless of whether you are going to the office or not, this routine puts you in “work mode.” Getting up, showering, and getting dressed in the morning provides structure to a person’s day in a way that rolling out of bed and logging in, while still wearing pajamas, does not. This structure also helps to differentiate workdays from weekends, providing a boundary between work time and personal time.

It is important that the days you work from home, regardless of how many your company gives you, look more like workdays in the office than like weekends. At the same time, the loungewear on the weekend reminds you that this is no longer work time and is instead time for a break.

Having accepted that getting dressed up is inevitable at least part of the time, some people may face a new problem. As much as we might not want to admit it, it is harder to fit into slacks than into yoga pants. The snug fit of work clothes may remind a person that they need to stay in shape and keep to their exercise routine.

Donning your favorite blouse may remind you how you looked in it the last time you wore it with your hair and makeup done.

In short, putting on your best professional wardrobe may prompt you to engage in self-care. This may take the form of regular exercise, getting haircuts, or keeping up with your skincare routine. It is less important what exactly you do and more important that you remember to do it even on your “work from home” days. The critical thing to keep in mind is that self-care is ultimately about you and not about where you are going.

Lastly, your choice of clothes is not only important because of what it can do for you, but also because of what it says about you. Clothes, like many other things in our lives, are a method of self-expression. All clothes send a message, and the message sent by your yoga pants and sweatshirts may not be the one you want to give your employer even if the company’s dress code officially allows for it. You do not want to inadvertently convey the idea that you don’t take your work as seriously at home as you do at the office.

Although we may not want to admit it, we usually take people in suits more seriously than we take people in sweatpants. So, if you want everyone to know how serious you are about your work, you may want to look the part.

Whatever your company’s “return to the office” plan is, it would be both hard to argue for, and unnecessary, for people to wear a crisply pressed suit while working from the couch. But a happy medium could exist. The rule of thumb can be, “Would I feel comfortable opening the door in this if my boss rang the bell,” or “Would I be embarrassed if my camera spanned my whole outfit right now?” If the outfit you are wearing does not meet these standards, then it would probably be a good idea to change.

ith the warm days of summer slowly drifting behind us, taking care of our skin and protecting it with the right products and treatments is just as important as we enter into a new season. What works for us in the warmer, more humid months of the summer isn’t going to bring the same results in fall and winter, and can actually do more harm to our skin than good. In the dog days of summer, the skin soaks up water from the air, but when the humidity drops, it loses the natural moisture it had become accustomed to.

According to Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, a well-known plastic surgeon on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the best thing anyone can do for their skin, especially during the warmer months, is to protect it not only with products but to keep it hydrated. Following these simple, yet important steps will prevent you from paying the price when winter rolls around.

“People like the warmth of the sun; they like that golden glow,” explains Dr. Preminger.

“But there is a lot of damage that happens at both the visible level, as well as the cellular level as a result of all of that sun exposure.”

Hyper-pigmentation is another result of all the sun exposure people incur throughout the summer. Those brown spots on the skin pop out, and all of a sudden patients realize it doesn’t look so good anymore. We need to be really careful what happens in the summer months because a bad sunburn can affect a person for years to come.

So the products we use in the summer should differ from the ones in the winter?

Yes, you have to adjust your products to what your skin is telling you. Some sort of sunblock should be worn all year round, even when the sun isn’t out.

People get more sun exposure than they realize. I wear a tinted moisturizer with SPF all year round. Going into the winter months you’re going to need a heavier moisturizer, whereas you’ll want something lighter in the summer.

Along with changing up our products for the winter, what procedures can be done to help restore any damage?

Going into fall is a great time to address any damage that may have been caused from sun exposure.

Resurfacing procedures that are harder to do during the summer, such as skin peels, laser resurfacing, CO2 laser, and IPL laser for brown spots, should really not be done when someone’s had sun exposure within the last two weeks or is planning to go away. That’s why fall is an ideal time to start correcting all of the damage because people aren’t going to be in the sun as much and everything is a little more protected from it.

It only makes sense that we take care of our skin and our bodies a little differently with the change of seasons. We winterize our cars, our home, and even our wardrobe, so why are we not putting the same effort into winterizing our skin? After all, it still takes a beating in the colder months, just a little differently than it does in those sunnier ones.

Dr. Preminger helps us uncover some of the reasons it’s important to adapt our skincare routine to the seasons. She shared with us not only the why, but the steps we can take to prepare ourselves ahead of time, along with some of the ways in which she is able to help patients reverse the damage caused by sun exposure.

I also recommend non-invasive treatments like Botox and fillers. In the summer, when people are in the sun, they tend to be squinting. It’s all about maintaining and not letting things go.

How often do some of these treatments need to be done in order to see results?

Why is it important we take different steps to protect our skin in the winter than we do in the summer?

When the winter rolls around, there is less moisture in the air, it’s cold and really dry, and if you don’t change up your products and skincare routine, your skin ends up paying the price. There are a couple of things you can do to make an investment in your skincare so things won’t look worse by the time winter comes around.

First, it’s important to stay hydrated, and that starts with moisturizing really well all summer long. Also, make sure to include areas like the lower eyelids and the neck. Be careful not to use something that’s going to clog the pores, especially since many people are still wearing masks. What you want to look for are products that are moisturizing and hydrating. You don’t want anything that is sticky and too heavy. As we move into fall and winter you’ll need to make adjustments in your moisturizers.

You also want to make sure you’re wearing sunblock and applying it to the areas many tend to forget like the ears and eyelids, and make sure you’re wearing a hat. A big area that gets a lot of sun damage, which people start to notice in the winter, is the arms, shoulders, and the décolleté (neck and chest) area. Come winter, patients will come in and want me to help treat all of that sun damage.

It varies on the treatment. For example, with skin peels, often I’ll recommend that they are done every two weeks, so we offer them as a package. With the IPL laser, patients will sometimes need at least three treatments. What’s also nice is many people still have some extra time to get these things done due to COVID.

Why is fall a good time to get started?

What’s nice about fall is you can start to hide stuff—people can wear turtlenecks or even scarves, especially for the more surgically based procedures like FaceTite, which is radio frequency combined with liposuction to help with neck tightening and the removal of fat under the skin, face lifts, mini face lifts, neck lifts, and the ponytail neck lift.

It’s also a great time to get your eyes done, which has been a big thing during the pandemic. With mask wearing, the eyes are what we’ve seen the most.

During fall, the sun is still out so people can get away with wearing sunglasses but they’re not getting the sun exposure you get during the summer.

Fall is also a good time to start thinking about body treatments like tummy tucks and liposuction. You’re covering up a little more than you were in the summer so any bruising can be hidden. The months start to sneak up on you and before you know it, summer’s here again. In the fall and winter months you can dedicate some extra time to the recovery.

What it all comes down to is maintenance and making an investment in yourself. What you do today is going to have an effect on you later in life, and down the road you’ll see the long-term payoff.
