A Message from the Head of School:

Dear Parents, Alumni, & Friends: Welcome to the summer 2018 edition of SANFORD magazine. The 2017–2018 school year was a smashing success for our school community on many fronts.

Students’ academic, artistic, and athletic achievements were notable. The Sanford community once again stepped forward to support the school in so many ways. Of course, our Sanford faculty and staff continued to deliver an exceptional experience for our students and families.

They also strengthen their imaginations and communication skills as they send radio messages about the things they see from the rocket ship back to the base on Earth.

The 2018–2019 school year is a special one for Nicol and me personally, as this is the first and only school year we will be parents of children in each of Sanford’s three divisions. Stella is a ninth grader; Finley is in seventh grade; and Oliver is a fourth grader.

For eight years we have witnessed our children blossom in the thoughtful care of our Sanford Lower School teachers. Kind, patient, and student-centered—our Lower School educators know how to reach and teach each and every Sanford Lower School student. The formative years in our Lower School continue to lay the foundation for academic success in our challenging college-prep curriculum. Our students leave the Lower School prepared and confident, with skills and knowledge that serve them well for years to come.

Our feature article, titled “Discover Why Young Learners Love the Sanford Journey,” will echo some of the thoughts I’ve shared here and include a more in-depth look at the extraordinary Lower School program.

Young Learners

From the moment students and their parents pull up to the entrance of the Lower School, a sense of caring is on display. Faculty members join Lower School Head Libbie Zimmer in greeting each student and parent. “This morning ritual is the very best part of my day,” confessed Zimmer. By taking the daily pulse of her students, she knows what child might need a little extra TLC, what parent should get a reassuring phone call that the tears quickly dried, or who has exciting news just bursting to be shared.

Starting the morning with a personal connection sets the tone for the rest of the day by providing students with a distinct reminder that the teachers cherish each individual learner. Every smile and handshake are daily commitments to honoring the school’s mission of helping students expand their knowledge within a safe and loving community. The dual goals of pursuing academic excellence and engendering positive relationships are at the core of life in the Lower School.

Above: Over the course of the year first graders will spend a month exploring each of the seven continents. Students explore the culture, map, flag, landmarks, native animals, foods, celebrations and people of several different countries in each continent. Each continental visit ends in a culminating project, like planning a party— complete with studentdecorated boomerangs—at one of Australia’s most famous locations: Bondi Beach.

Our Curriculum The curriculum within the Lower School does much more

than provide the foundations of literacy and number sense.

Across grade levels and subject areas students are encouraged to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, engage in conversations, and find ways to link the classroom to themselves and the wider environment. Keeping students perpetually absorbed in problem solving and creative thinking requires a fluid curriculum that can be adapted to the needs and strengths of each student. The faculty point to their thematic approach to learning as the linchpin of the academic program in the Lower School.

Fourth graders walk in the shoes of famous figures on Biography Day. Each student chooses a person to research and then they write and memorize a two-minute speech about the life and accomplishments of their historical figure. The notable names include people from ancient times to present day, such as Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Goodall, Michael Jordan, and George Washington.

Thematic learning is an instructional method of teaching in which students focus on one theme across multiple subject areas, which allows them to see how various disciplines

Second-grade students celebrate holidays from around the world at their Poetry Coffeehouse. Groups of students read poems that describe traditions related to holidays that happen throughout the year, from Diwali and Kwanzaa to Mother’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.

Fourth graders are at work filming the WSLS News broadcast. Students run the show for this entire production, from interviewing guests and writing content to managing sound, lighting, and recording responsibilities.

are related. For example, in the fourth grade, students participate in a sustainable house project that involves groups of students using science, literacy, math, technology, and art to design and build a model of a house that runs on renewable energy. * In science, students learn about the different types of

renewable energy, such as wind or solar power and discuss the value of renewable resources. Then, they follow up in library, where they research and write about the merits and shortcomings of each type of energy.

* Math is incorporated when students are tasked with

creating a blueprint for a house and then cutting out a scale model of their design from foam board.

* In technology students use Makey Makeys to connect a

button on the house to an audio file of their renewable energy research. They use Tinkercad to 3D print an object to represent each type of energy, such as a windmill for wind energy.

* In art students explore architecture and interior design.

They manufacture furniture to go inside of their model homes and construct the exterior walls of the homes using supplies that mimic sustainable building materials such as stucco and brick.

Projects such as these are created and showcased throughout the Lower School because they allow for interdisciplinary skill development; when the component of group work is added, life skills such as compromise and collaboration are enhanced. In addition, thematic learning affords students the opportunity to engage with a concept from many different avenues, and this can lead to increased confidence as students discover new ways to use their strengths to make meaningful contributions to the group. Sanford parent Catherine Kaser shared, “My child went from writing as few words as possible on a daily journaling page to taking creative risks with his thoughts and ideas. But it is not just my son; I think that almost every parent sees their child experience at least one no talent lies latent moment.

The Lower School teachers set high standards for their students and nurture their individual growth. It is not about meeting arbitrary benchmarks for bragging rights.

Rather it is a strengths-based approach led by teachers who have a selfless desire to do the very best they can for our children.�

aculty members pride themselves on offering students a rich and challenging educational experience, but they also feel strongly that content exposure is not the sole function of the Lower School programming. Zimmer noted, “In preparing students with a foundation, we are not limiting ourselves to academics. We consider it a priority to ensure that our students move forward building skills and a strong sense of self for future growth. We want our students to know that they are cared for and supported so they will accept challenges and take risks, knowing we are their safety net.” Teachers construct that safety net by intentionally fostering student-to-student connections and earnestly partnering with parents.

The strong Lower School community starts with cultivating a positive culture in each classroom and that means laying a foundation of robust student relationships. Teachers use Responsive Classroom teaching techniques to emphasize values such as respect, kindness, empathy, accountability, altruism, and responsibility. One of the hallmarks of the

Kindergarten students use colorful counters to develop their addition skills. From kindergarten through sixth grade Sanford uses the Math in Focus program to strengthen students’ number sense and problem-solving skills.

Responsive Classroom method is to start class with a Morning Meeting which includes time for students to greet each other and the opportunity for students to share. Sometimes the topics are light, such as asking students to describe their weekend plans, but other times the conversation is more thoughtful. For example, students may be asked to come up with kudos and concerns: a list of things that are going well for their class and suggestions for areas that can be improved. By dedicating the first few minutes of class time to open dialogue, teachers strengthen the ties among the students in the classroom community.

In addition to facilitating classroom relationships, teachers also make a concerted effort to build rapport with parents.

Certainly, faculty members keep families abreast of upcoming classroom events and provide comprehensive feedback about each student’s social and academic progress. However, Lower School teachers also strive to put a personal touch on every interaction that they have with parents by clearly

demonstrating how much they put into knowing and caring for that parent’s child. Head of School Mark Anderson remarked, “Sanford is comprised of an excellent faculty that ranges from the seasoned veteran to the wide-eyed rookie.

Their experiences may differ, but they all deeply care about their students as people. Because of this passion, our teachers willingly employ multiple teaching strategies, sharpen their instructional skills, and model for their students that by working together they can share the never-ending, glorious journey called learning.”

Kindergarten students enjoy free reading time in the library, and they are especially excited when the librarian creates book displays that connect to topics they’re studying in other classes. Being able to make connections across multiple books and subject areas helps students strengthen their own knowledge of the material.

The personal relationships between Sanford teachers and students propel engaged learning, independent thinkers, and selfconfidence.

Sanford Home & School Association President Laura Giardina elaborated:

“When my family moved here from Michigan our highest priority was to find a school for our son. During my tour of Sanford, I was struck by the contagious energy and palpable warmth that is the Lower School. My son’s teachers know him—not just by name or obvious personality traits, but as the person he truly is. That takes a special level of caring, along with intentional observations and conversations. As a result, my son is deeply connected with all of his teachers and this school. My husband and I feel grateful that we found this special school.”

First-grade students use iPads to share their work through the Seesaw app. They can record a video of themselves solving a math program or reading a story they’ve written and then post the video to their account. Teachers, peers, and parents can view the video and record feedback and comments. Students can listen to the feedback recording and revise their work within the app.

If you have not been to the Lower School recently, do something special for yourself and schedule a tour. Take time to look at the wall displays and observe how students create work that is uniquely theirs. Ask any faculty member your questions, and be prepared for enthusiastic, knowledgeable responses—always with students at the crux. Most of all, notice the students and the relaxed, yet confident way in which they carry themselves. They are empowered to take risks, develop their academic and personal strengths, and learn from their mistakes. The diligent, intentional efforts of Zimmer and her faculty members have made Sanford Lower School a joyful place that is filled with love and learning.

Third-grade students develop their coding skills by using Blockly to program these Dash robots. In technology class Patrick Martin starts teaching kindergartners about sequential programming based on color pattern recognition, and by fourth-grade students are comfortable using both HTML and Scratch to create complex code.

How did your family discover Sanford?

When Jana was four years old, my husband and I put together a list of schools that we wanted to research and visit for Jana. First, we did a lot of internet research and talked with other parents. Since neither of us grew up in Delaware, we really had no idea what school we would choose for Jana.

We had about ten schools on our list —ranging from public to independent to Christian schools. We started with a blank sheet of paper and then began listing what was important to us for Jana’s education. We landed on the following criteria: strong educational offering, diverse student and faculty population, a proven track record of student success, sustainability, and safety.

Delaware has quite a few excellent schools.

Why did you choose Sanford?

As soon as I visited the campus for the first time, I knew I had found our school. We had visited about eight other schools prior to visiting Sanford and we only found one other school where we could picture Jana spending the next 13 years. I originally visited Sanford alone and after feeling welcomed by the wonderful Admission team and Lower School faculty, I quickly began to feel that I had found our school! I was also blown away by the beautiful campus (and this was before Geipel!). I thought that enjoying the campus would be a big part of Jana’s experience. I was impressed by the student diversity and the long history of the school. The children were so interactive and happy as I observed the classrooms. The teachers truly made learning fun. After my visit, I sat in my car and cried tears of relief—I wanted Jana to be a part of the Sanford community. I called my husband and told him that I had found our school. I remember he thought I was jumping to a decision too hastily. I asked him to schedule a visit and after his visit, he felt exactly as I did. We only allowed Jana to visit two schools because we didn’t want to confuse her with too many options. After her campus visit, she asked us if she could go to Sanford. We asked her why and she stated how nice everyone was to her and how happy she was during her visit. I was also impressed with the level of detail the Admission team shared with me about Jana’s visit. I felt they truly invested the time to get to know Jana during her brief campus visit. And the rest is history—Sanford has exceeded all of our expectations!

How do you describe Sanford when you talk about Jana’s school?

We tell other parents that Jana thrives at Sanford. She is getting an excellent education and she loves to go to school every day. We speak about how special the Sanford community is to us. We give Sanford credit for her love of learning and for her desire to pursue any and all interests. We believe that members of the Sanford community have similar values to those of our family, and we know that Jana will continue to be a great citizen thanks to those aligned values.

As a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, you’re in tune not only with Sanford’s current state but also the school’s strategic direction. What are your thoughts about Sanford’s future?

I remember when I received Sanford’s strategic plan, Ambition in Action, in the mail during our first year at Sanford. I read the document and was truly excited about the future plans for Sanford. In fact, I was so excited that I asked to meet with Mark Anderson about this document. Mark immediately made time for me and we had a wonderful and open conversation about the strategic plan. I really didn’t expect the school to have a strategic plan, so I was excited to see a written commitment to continuously evolve the school

We believe that members of the Sanford community have similar values to those of our family, and we know that Jana will continue to be a great citizen thanks to those aligned values. while honoring its longstanding history. I was thrilled when I was asked to join a Board committee a few months later which eventually led to an invitation to join the Board. The Board is also diverse in backgrounds and experiences. I am honored to be a Board member, and I am very excited that I was able to meaningfully contribute to the next strategic plan—Bolder. Brighter. Stronger.—which was just released after spring break this year. I am excited about the school’s future direction. Doing the work on the Board is one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done. I am excited to work hard to ensure that students will be able to attend such an amazing school for the next 100 years!

Sanford is a place where students can be themselves, express themselves, and challenge themselves—which ultimately leads to students finding themselves. Can you share a few examples of how Sanford is helping Jana in this regard?

This question perfectly describes Jana’s five years at Sanford.

When Jana started at Sanford, she was interested in dance.

However, since joining Sanford, she has pursued various other interests as well—violin, piano, chorus, and ice skating.

She also enjoys science, technology, foreign languages, and theater. She has a new interest in history. She also takes pride in solving a challenging math problem. Sanford encourages students to try anything that interests them.

More importantly, the faculty creates a safe and uplifting environment that allows students to explore and pursue various areas to help students develop their interests.

Folks sometimes think that diversity doesn’t exist in private schools. How do you view diversity at Sanford?

We view diversity as broader than just visible diversity.

Sanford children come from different backgrounds and have different beliefs, interests, and ideas. However, these differences are truly celebrated and respected and have created a longstanding community that is rich and unique.

I also believe that diversity should always be accompanied by equity and inclusion. Here’s a perfect example of inclusion at Sanford. Jana didn’t know anyone when she joined Sanford in kindergarten and she entered at a time where quite a few kindergarten students already knew each other from PreK. Yet, all of the classmates heartwarmingly welcomed Jana and she quickly formed treasured friendships that I am sure will last a lifetime. Sanford students and parents quickly become part of the Sanford community too, which I think is very special. I wish that the rest of our everyday world could be more like Sanford. I believe that Sanford is growing tomorrow’s leaders who will value diversity, equity and inclusion.

In this issue of the magazine, we’re featuring an article about our Lower School. What is your (or Jana’s) favorite Lower School memory or experience?

Jana especially enjoyed fourth-grade Biography Day. She chose a historical figure to research, wrote a paper, and delivered a speech she memorized. During an assembly for students and parents, she dressed like “her person,” Queen Elizabeth I. We will never forget Jana’s smile while onstage as she presented her speech. Not only did she learn a lot during this unit of study—she also felt a big sense of accomplishment.

My husband is an elementary school teacher and my parents are retired educators. Needless to say, all three of them were amazed by all of the children on Biography Day—they raved about the integrated curriculum and how these students are so comfortable with recitation and being on stage. What a great way to learn and build confidence!

As you prepare for Sanford’s Middle School, do you have expectations or hopes for Jana’s fifth through eighth-grade years?

Lower School was such a magical experience for our family that it is hard to believe that the experience can be matched in Middle School. However, we have heard from parents and Middle School students how special Middle School is.

We are all truly excited. Our hope is that Jana will thrive and continue to develop a love of learning—something that we desire for her during the rest of her life. We want her to be confident and understand that she can continue to pursue new interests and/or perfect existing ones. Jana is particularly looking forward to American History and the field trips, especially Williamsburg!

You once shared that Jana told you, “I’m a Sanford girl.” Do you think Jana will one day describe herself as a Sanford lifer?

Jana has already shared that she will be a Sanford lifer. She tells us about teachers that she looks forward to having in Middle and Upper School. She can’t wait to be a part of Sanford’s theater productions. She already imagines her graduation day where she will follow the school’s tradition of wearing her kindergarten sailor hat! Her biggest hope is that her entire class will become Sanford lifers. My husband and I will not be surprised when Jana applies to work at Sanford.

Is there anything I didn’t ask that you would like to share?

We view the Sanford community as an extension of the Washington family.

n Friday, June 8th, the Class of 1955 Amphitheater provided a beautiful setting for Sanford’s 82nd Commencement. Fifty-four seniors received their diplomas during the event, which featured a keynote address from Upper School faculty member Pete Williams; student addresses from Claire Jester and Nicholas Marcozzi; musical selections by Jazmin Aguilar, Lillian Allingham, Madeline Cooper, Gladys Mbugua, Leah Somerville, Julia Sykora, Shelby Ward, and the Sanford Vocal Ensemble; and the presentation of diplomas and awards by Head of School Mark Anderson, Board of Trustees President Ted H. Dwyer III, and Head of Upper School Lynn Casto.

Class Day 2018 During Sanford’s annual Class Day celebration on Wednesday June 6th, Upper School students were honored for achievements in academics, athletics, arts, and service. Middle and Lower School Closing Exercises During our annual closing exercises in Middle School and Lower School, eighth-grade and fourth-grade students were honored on the stage of the Class of 1955 Amphitheater in the William L. Association. President Laura Giardina is leading the dynamic team of Treasurer Patti Bescript, Secretary Jackie Leo, and Immediate Past President Kate Rosenthal through another exciting year full of activities and opportunities for volunteering.

There are numerous volunteer roles, which include serving as an Annual Fund Grade Chair and supporting programs and activities, such as New Family Mentors, Quizzo, the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, Grandparent Days or the Auction.

n June 7th, Home & School hosted faculty and staff for the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. The Hollywood-themed event featured fun faculty awards and a wonderful salute by parents and students. In honor of the faculty, Sanford families donated items needed by foster children transitioning to college. Co-Chairs Michelle Berkley-Ayers and Veronica Chavez rallied a talented committee and parents in support of the event.

The event began with breakfast and musical numbers in the Geipel Center for Performing Arts. Grandparents and guests then visited students’ classrooms and enjoyed activities in the Lower School. The morning is an exciting opportunity for the two generations to enjoy one another and to learn about life at Sanford. Special thanks for Gina McCollum-Crowder and her team of volunteers for making the event a success.

SANFORD AUCTION Sanford’s 29th Annual Auction was held at Deerfield Golf Club

on April 28. Over 240 attendees helped raise $196,425. The “Field Day”-themed event included a cocktail reception, live and silent auction and fun for attendees. Chairman Laura Giardina shared, “Proceeds will fund summer study grants for faculty, improvements to Lower and Middle School play areas, and furniture for the Upper School. An enthusiastic team of volunteers made the event a great community builder, as well as a great fundraiser.”

Sanford Faculty Members Honored for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning During the 2018 end-of-year faculty meeting,

Head of School Mark Anderson presented four teachers with endowed awards for their outstanding contributions to Sanford.

Max Schneider received The Waterman Award for Coaching Excellence. This award was established in 2016 to recognize an exceptional Sanford coach who embodies Sanford Boys’ Basketball Coach Stan Waterman’s high moral character, dedication to the development of the whole athlete, and outstanding sportsmanship.

John Bell was the recipient of The Donovan Award for Professional Development. Established in 2011 to honor the memory of Sanford faculty member Dr. Paul Donovan, this award recognizes a member of the Sanford faculty who has been distinguished in their work in the area of professional development.

Pete Williams was this year’s winner of The Johns Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award, established in 2013 to honor Sanford faculty member Lloyd Johns, is given to a member of the Sanford faculty who has an uncanny knack for challenging all students to push beyond what they believe is possible.

Missy Bloom received The Dagenais Award for Leadership in Education. Established in 2013 to pay tribute to Sanford faculty members André and Sue Dagenais, this award honors a member of the Sanford faculty who mentors, inspires, and encourages their students to aim higher than they thought possible.

Giving

Our Community’s Generosity Enriches Sanford’s Program and Facilities D

uring the 2017–2018 academic year, more than $1,280,000 was donated to Sanford School. The generosity of parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends helped ensure the school remains an exciting place to learn and teach.

The Annual Fund raised a record $564,894, 13% over the $500,000 goal. The campaign kicked off with 100% participation from trustees, faculty, and staff. Throughout the year, donors enthusiastically responded to requests from peers and volunteers. A generous match from an anonymous donor near the end of the campaign helped to maximize donor giving and paved the way for tremendous success.

Additional gifts for restricted purposes provided nearly $600,000 in support of numerous specific projects undertaken by the school. These gifts included an anonymous gift for a new Bermuda grass field and a scoreboard for the baseball field.

As Sanford begins its 89th year of educating young people, your generosity continues to provide the financial resources necessary to keep the school strong and financially viable.

Donors made the renovation of Stewart Cottage possible (see page 21) and supported the purchase of an updated security system. A $150,000 grant from Crystal Trust allowed for the renovation of Quigley Hall, home to College Counseling (left). Two gifts added $150,000 to the endowment. Gifts also provided library books, sports equipment, various items for the new woodshop, and other updated equipment and facilities.

A gift from the Michael and Nancy Pia Foundation was paired with contributions from numerous alumni to fund the renovation of the Kenneth D. Jones Memorial Chapel (above). Thanks to the generosity of this group, a campus landmark will be returned to its full beauty and will be available for numerous programs and activities. In addition, the Pia Foundation is funding the integration of a mindfulness program into the classroom at all levels.

Throughout the year, members of the Sanford community donated gifts-in-kind, which included vans, building supplies, technology equipment, and more. These non-cash gifts have allowed us to enhance our offerings, strengthen our programs, and improve our facilities.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to the Sanford donors and volunteers who were integral to this fundraising success.

Ribbon Cutting Wraps Up Additional Gifts for Stewart Cottage Trustees, donors, and school leaders celebrated the renovation

of Stewart Cottage with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, June 12th.

Once home to faculty and staff and most recently unused, Stewart Cottage has been transformed into the Wahl Woodworking Shop. Thanks to the generosity of Adam and Kim Wahl, joined

by Andy and Heather Jefferson and Ed and Sandy Dougherty, the facility will now allow students to learn woodworking skills and explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with hands-on projects.

Upper School Science Department Co-Chair Ensign Simmons will oversee the program, safety training, and integration of these resources into the curriculum. Students in Lower

School will be taught to use basic hand tools. Middle School students will advance to using power tools, and Upper School curriculum will include cabinetry and woodworking classes, as well as a 3D art and sculpture class. The woodworking elective in the Upper School has been enthusiastically received and is already at capacity.

Ribbon cutting attendees explored the renovated facility and learned more about the new program opportunities to be offered. A spontaneous challenge resulted in many of those in attendance pledging additional funds to outfit the woodshop. Thank you to all of the donors who made this exciting project possible. This is yet another example of the resourcefulness, generosity, and sense of community that makes Sanford unique.

Revered Educators Set to Begin New Chapters Three longtime faculty members announced their retirement at the end of the 2017–2018 school year. Their combined service

to the school totals over 85 years. The thread that runs between each is the belief that an atmosphere of collegiality and a sense of community are the qualities that set Sanford apart. These educators have had an immeasurable impact on Sanford. Head of School Mark Anderson shared, “Each of these individuals brought unique skills and talents to Sanford and each leaves behind a lasting impression on the lives of hundreds of young people. Sanford is a better place because they were a part of our history.”

Carol Moore

Carol Moore started teaching full time at Sanford in 1991,

after substituting and tutoring at the school for several years.

Prior to raising her children Mandy ’95, Carry ’95, and Rob ’97, Carol had taught high school while her husband Greg’s career took them to various towns in the South.

Carol was hired as a fifth-grade teacher, instructing reading and math. Later, she helped develop Sanford’s Latin program, growing it from grades five and six to include the Lower School. Using a summer study grant, Carol created Latin Day, which continues to bring together Latin students from local independent schools for a day of immersion. Head of Middle School Eph Humphreys shared, “Carol single-handedly fostered a love of Latin among the youngest charges at Sanford and built the Latin program to the highest level of student interest in Sanford’s history.” Committed to ensuring Middle School students were exposed to the literary classics, she also introduced the Wax Museum, now a highlight of the Middle School experience.

Often the first person on campus each morning, arriving early to welcome students in person, Carol creates a peaceful and personable tone for the day. Parents and students love connecting with her; she feels like family to them.

Carol feels that “Sanford is an amazing place to learn because the faculty is encouraged to bring forward creative and innovative ideas. We are challenged and in return, students are challenged.” She values the relationships she has made during her time at the school and believes recent facilities improvements allow “the campus to reflect the exceptional people living and learning there daily.”

“You never retire from teaching. It is always a part of you,” Carol shared. She plans to take time to be thoughtful about what she would like to do in the newest chapter of her life and looks forward to spending time with her three grandchildren, including Sanford Lower School students Abby ’29 and Andrew ’31. Volunteering at her church and with numerous other organizations, as well as gardening, are also important in her life. She has already taken on chairing an auction for a local non-profit.

Karen Perkins, whom Carol says mentored her when she first arrived, noted, “Carol has reinvented herself several times during her years at Sanford. She is dedicated to her students and commits herself daily to making certain her classes are well-structured and fun.”

Betty O’Regan Betty O’Regan is described by her colleague Nina Silverman as

a Renaissance woman. “Gifted as a teacher, Betty has encouraged thousands of students to explore and create and to appreciate their personal talents. Everything she does, she does with skill, style, and passion.” From her recent passion for floral design, to longtime hobbies including illustrated journaling, travel, and reading, Betty has numerous endeavors she is eager to pursue in her retirement.

Betty’s journey to Sanford began while teaching art in South Carolina.

Betty met former Head of School Gordon Schofield and longtime faculty members André and Sue Dagenais at a party in Hilton Head.

They encouraged Betty to return to Delaware to teach at Sanford.

In 1979, Betty began her time at Sanford as a temporary Visual Arts department chair. The position became permanent and Betty has remained at the school for 38 years. She reminisces that it became “The job of a lifetime!”

Betty lived on campus for 18 years. She and her husband Denis were married in Chapel Valley and her stepson Kevin is a member of the Class of 1998. Their daughter Bea also attended Sanford for several years. Betty has two additional stepchildren.

After dedicating decades to Sanford as a true master teacher who consistently works on her craft by attending and presenting at conferences and workshops outside of Sanford, Betty still takes the time to individually reach out to kids and positively develop their love for art and the exploration of new things.

Once asked if she felt as though by living on campus she could never leave work, she replied, “No, I never leave home!”

Betty believes Sanford’s greatest assets are “The people.

Colleagues, students, and parents of students all make this community special.” She also appreciates the personal growth mindset at the school. Study grants have allowed Betty to travel and pursue her interests. Betty is curious by nature and feels the grants fueled her desire to be a lifelong learner. In the future, she looks forward to planning travel opportunities for those with interests similar to hers, particularly illustrated journaling.

As a foster parent, Betty is committed to spending more time volunteering with underserved children. She is eager to spend time with her grandchildren, sharing with them her love of art.

Head of Lower School Libbie Zimmer shared, “Betty implemented the ‘maker space’ learning environment long before maker space was an educational term or STEM buzz word. Through ‘Open Studio’ Betty developed a safe platform for young students to construct, create, fail, and succeed with nothing more than re-purposed and recycled materials. Open Studio remains one of Lower School students’ most highly anticipated activities. With Betty’s encouragement they embark upon journeys as artists, archivists, scientists, engineers, or anything else—it is up to them!” continued on page 24

John Ramsey has been a Sanford faculy member since 1997.

For 21 years, John has been teaching math and assisting students through college counseling. Early in his Sanford career, John coached Middle School basketball. He then went on to coach the Upper School baseball team for nearly 15 years. John came to Sanford from the Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey, and early in his career he taught in St. Croix, USVI, where he was introduced to his calling of assisting students in the college application process.

John’s unflappable personality made him predictable and accessible to students— providing a sense of support and security as John stretched them toward greater understanding.

When asked to describe John, Head of Upper School Lynn Casto eloquently stated, “John models quiet, persistent leadership for faculty and students on a daily basis. For four years, John led the Honor Council with integrity and compassion. His unwavering optimism and sense of humor contribute positively to the Upper School community. John is often the voice of reason which guides his peers to making student-centered decisions that reflect Sanford’s mission. He

roots for the underdog and celebrates the success of all students. One of the first to arrive in the morning, you also will find him on the sidelines of every sport after school. His dedication to Sanford and to our students is noticed and appreciated; John embodies the qualities of faculty leadership that Sanford values dearly.”

An avid sports fan, many of John’s favorite memories of his time at Sanford are of the school athletic events that draw the community together in celebration. John also grew to enjoy SRTC theater productions, fondly remembering attending the annual musicals with his daughter. He believes Sanford’s greatest asset is the strength of the relationships built between both faculty and students.

As his retirement approached, John reflected, “Every morning for 21 years I have looked forward to coming to Sanford! But I am now looking forward to waking up in September with new opportunities to pursue.” Not only did John’s family celebrate his retirement in June, his daughter Julia graduated from college in May and his son Curtis was married in June. John and his wife Christine plan to travel. This summer they spent time in Maine and hope to drive cross country in the near future. One of John’s hobbies is riding his motorcycle, which he hopes to take on extended trips.

Casey Zimmer, director of college counseling, shared: “John Ramsey held a unique position among the faculty with regards to his relationship with students. Firm but fair, John was wellknown to go far beyond the norm for students to make sure that they understood the math principles in his classroom.

Endlessly patient, he would let kids try and try and try again to demonstrate they could do it. John generously spent time volunteering to provide individual tutoring before school, during free periods, and lunch, encouraging their individual growth. While he never cultivated a following of students intentionally, for lots of kids Mr. Ramsey was a sort of cult hero.

Kids enjoyed his dry wit, his quick thinking, and his interest in their lives. And they could always rely on Mr. Ramsey’s emotional balance—whether at seven in the morning or five in the afternoon, Mr. Ramsey was never grumpy, impatient, or frustrated. And while he was always willing to poke fun at himself, he never made kids the butt of his jokes. He is selfless, entertaining, dignified, and kind.”

sanfordwarrior After a busy freshman year at Columbia University, Sanford Alum Martin Hunt ’17 has an exciting summer ahead of him. Following a week backpacking across Morocco, Martin is spending time in Madrid, Spain working as a mergers and acquisitions intern at a private equity firm.

Sanford Alumni Notes Sanford Alumni Notes Danielle Fleming ’11 recently started a new job as an assistant director of admission at The Madeira School in McLean, VA. Formerly in admissions and athletics at St. George’s School in Rhode Island, Danielle looks forward to taking on the challenges of her new role.

In addition to supporting enrollment management initiatives, Danielle will teach a diversity, equity, and inclusion class, manage the overnight host and big sister mentor programs, serve as a dorm parent, and be an advisor for a group of twelfth-grade students.

Holly Torres ’12 is halfway through completing a Master’s in Science degree in primate conservation from Oxford Brookes University, in Oxford, England, where she received a scholarship. In the spring of 2018, Holly (shown in the photo below) travelled to Ecuador to gather data on local people’s involvement in primate conservation, determining if initiatives in rural communities are adequately addressing the well-being of locals in their projects and developing strategies for improvement. Studies have shown that the more locals are involved in the planning and implementing of conservation projects, the more successful they are. Projects in Ecuador include work with critically endangered brown-headed spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and howler monkeys.

Trevor and his teammates took home first place in the B division with 63 points, which was 15 points ahead of second-place St. Mary’s (MD). The quartet of MIT sailors won rotation seven and placed inside the top five in 11 of 14 races sailed during the championship weekend.

Robert Hampel, Sanford Board member from 1986–1991 and 1996, recently published a book titled Fast and Curious: A History of Shortcuts in American Education (Rowman & Littlefield, Dec. 2017). The book begins with Norman Rockwell’s correspondence school and ends with Evelyn Wood’s speed reading classes. Along the way Hampel looks at Classic Comics, Paint by Numbers, shorthand, Cliff Notes, phonetic spelling, Teach for America, three-year bachelors’ degrees, law school at the YMCA, and other streamlined paths to education.

Catching up with Jeff Swinger ’88 What have you been doing since you left Sanford?

I have been a professional photographer since 1992 when I started honing my skills in community journalism and found my passion telling stories through images.

I worked at The Cincinnati Enquirer nearly 16 years where I spent the bulk of my career covering the city’s professional sports teams including the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds as well as the area’s dominant NCAA athletics. I was also handpicked by USA Today Sports to be part of its photo team covering the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Other career highlights include the coverage of the NFL playoffs, Super Bowl XLVI and four Kentucky Derbies. Additionally, I work with Canon USA as a freelance pro market representative, travelling nationally to promote the brand and teach the technical side of its camera equipment. In December 2014, I moved to Park City, Utah, where I work for USA Today Sports Images as a photo editor and contract photographer, covering Utah’s professional and college sports as well as international events. I am an educator running small group workshops and photo tours.

How did your Sanford experience help you along the way?

I’ve always loved that I attended school at Sanford. It was and I’m sure is still a special place to go to school. I loved the small classes and the one on one attention from teachers. Mostly I loved the environment. Being able to leave a building and walk to another for class always gave me the feel of being on a college campus.

I loved that we had sports available to us and back in the day it was great to play soccer for Chip Mayo.

Despite not having facilities for Ski Team, Track and Field and Rowing I was able to compete in each of those sports while at Sanford and I loved it. Since we had such small classes I was able to have close friends and still stay in touch.

What advice would you give current students?

I picked up my first camera my freshman year at Sanford. I would take photos in between classes and during sporting events. I participated in yearbook and took photography classes, learning how to use a darkroom, processing my own film and printing black and white. I was always encouraged to do so by our art teachers and advisors. This was a big reason I was able to pursue my dream of becoming a photographer. I would tell current students that the opportunities are right in front of your face and you have to pursue them with a passion. The staff is always there to help you and put you in touch with people in a field or area of interest. This puts you ahead of most high school students because of what Sanford offers their students. I am so fond of my time there and even after all of these years I still like to swing through campus and reminisce about old times when I get to town.

Alumni Ashley White Palandrani ’99 What have you been doing since you left Sanford?

Since graduating in 1999 a lot has changed…I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Western Maryland College in communications and sociology graduating in 2003.

After college I pursued a buying career at the offices of Anthropologie/Urban Outfitters Co. where I bought for over 100 US stores and developed an even stronger passion for this field of work. I continued working in this field until I ventured onto my own and opened Ashley Austin over 9 years ago. Since opening Ashley Austin, I am honored to have won Best of Delaware, Best of The Main Line, Best Boutique and to have been recently named one of the seven most fashionable boutique owners by Main Line Today. My most important role however is as mommy and wife to my family.

I have two wonderful children: an adventurous little boy age 2 and a sweet and fun-loving 4-year-old little girl. My husband Greg and I are raising our two children right here in Hockessin.

I keep very busy with family and my business which is located in downtown Kennett Square.

How did your Sanford experience help you along the way?

Sanford was such a wonderful experience. I look back on my days at Sanford and have nothing but fantastic things to say. I learned exceptional social skills, unparalleled academic knowledge and a desire to want to learn and grow more.

My dearest friends from Sanford are still my very best today.

The quality education yet approachable social atmosphere is something I adored. I am very proud of to say I graduated from Sanford.

What advice would you give current students?

Soak it all in. Enjoy the friendships, the mentoring and the knowledge from exceptional teachers. Sanford is a gem.

Sanford Alumni Notes Sanford Alumni Notes Class of 2014 UPDATE Jennifer Aguirre, Smith College Major: Psychology Jennifer enjoyed amazing opportunities to travel while at Smith. Through service trips with Global Medical Brigades, she was able to visit places like Nicaragua and Honduras. As part of an international immersion with BOLD Women’s Leadership Network, a scholarship program created to fund a social justice transformation project on campus, she was able to spend three weeks in Cameroon while also shadowing a non-profit focused on women’s sexual and reproductive health.

Over winter break, she spent a month in India learning about their healthcare system with a special focus on women’s health and Tibetans in exile, getting to meet the Dalai Lama. Jennifer enjoyed research opportunities, including public health research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York over the past two summers. Currently living in Boston working as a medical scribe, she’s taking this gap year to get more clinical experience before returning to school in the fall of 2019 to complete a Post-baccalaureate program at Columbia University.

NSEP David L. Boren Scholar Excellence in Communication Award presented by GMU Communication Department, Excellence in Korean Studies Minor award presented by GMU Modern and Classical Language Department, Best Korean Film Project Award at GMU Student Korean Film Festival 2017, was a member of the Dean’s List every semester of all 4 years at university. She was inducted into the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society and the Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society. Brooke was a member of the Epsilon Pi chapter of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, the Public Relations Student Society of America and participated in the GMU Global Education Office.

Kent County Tourism Corporation in Dover, DE. Brooke spent one semester in Incheon, South Korea in spring 2015 at George Mason University Korea Campus, one winter break in London, England for International Public Relations in London 2-week program in 2016, one semester at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea studying media communications and Korean language/culture in 2017.

Amira Hannon, Harvard University, Cum Laude with Honors from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Major: Engineering Sciences (secondary field in Global Health and Health Policy and a language citation in Spanish) Amira recently traveled to Europe and began working full time as an associate at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in their New York City office. She has received deferred admission to the Stanford Graduate School of Business and will enroll in 2020.

Justin Fleming, Salisbury University Major: Communications Justin received his Bachelor of Arts degree, with a minor in sociology, in May of 2018.

During his SU career, Justin participated in a wide array of clubs and activities, traveled to Mexico, and mentored students at a local high school. In April of 2018, he was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s honor society at four-year colleges and universities. Justin is currently working with the Hertz Corporation in their management training program.

Peyton Marcozzi, Northeastern University Major: Industrial Engineering Peyton is pursuing a bachelor and master’s five-year combined program, which will culminate with a master’s in engineering management.

Peyton worked at Raytheon in Andover, MA where she supervised four full-scale manufacturing lines and 19 union operators in the spring of 2016. She worked at Tesla in Reno, NV, in the spring of 2018 on the new product introduction team launching a new battery line that will go into power walls and power packs.

Peyton is currently working at SpaceX in Hawthorne, CA, where she is on the supply chain team in the distribution center redesigning the process and layout for packing materials leaving the warehouse.

Nathaniel Reynolds, Franklin and Marshall College Majors: Philosophy and Government Nate spent his last semester of college studying at American University in Washington, DC, and interning for the American Bar Association. He graduated in 2017, Magna Cum Laude, and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He’s been teaching seventh-grade math for the past year in Indianapolis as a part of Teach for America.

He has one more year for his Teach for America commitment to teach in Indianapolis. After that, he will be looking to go to law school.

Jasmyn Parker, Rosemont College Major: Psychology Jasmyn completed an internship at ABA2Day as a behavioral specialist. During this past basketball season, Jasmyn was recognized as being the eighth women’s basketball player to score 1,000 points at Rosemont College.

She is now enrolled in nursing school at Holy Family University.

Anton Vasilyev, University of Delaware Major: Electrical Engineering Anton completed a summer internship as a Summer Undergraduate Research Student at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) where he studied instruments to redefine the voltage standard.

He recently had an experiment launched into space from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility as a part of the Rocksat-C Program. Anton is currently searching for jobs in electrical engineering.

Zoe Zabel, Texas Christian University Major: Journalism and Graphic Design Zoe is living in Dallas and working at Corgan, an international architecture firm as a marketing and business development coordinator.

Bryan McLellan, Stanford University Major: Computer Science Bryan completed internships at Goldman Sachs, GitHub, and Facebook. He will be traveling this summer with his friends throughout Europe and will start working for Palantir Technologies in NYC this fall.

to our Alumni Award winners Three notable alumni were

presented the Sanford School Alumni Award. The honors are awarded annually to alumni or associate alumni who have distinguished themselves in their profession, through other achievements, and/or service to Sanford School. Up to six of these awards may be presented annually.

The first Sanford Alumni Awards were presented at Homecoming 1997. This year’s recipients were Elizabeth Hussey ’96, Peter Jennings ’68, and Jeffrey Kellogg ’68.

While at Sanford, Beth was active on the field hockey team, in the German Club, Key Club, Student Activities and the Yearbook.

Beth attended the Catholic University of America and completed her master’s program in social work at the University of Pittsburgh in December 2000.

Beth has worked in every major court system in New Castle County including family court, court of common pleas, and superior court. She also worked in specialty courts including gun, mental health, and school diversion. Beth has worked on multiple capital murder trials, and recently retired from her position with the public defender’s office to take a position working in Delaware high schools providing social services care via Christiana Care. Beth has spent her entire career to date serving the Delaware community at every stage. In addition,

she has participated in many community outreach programs and even completed mission trips outside of the US to bring care to people in need.

Beth is a kind, compassionate listener who sees the very worst the world has to offer and works to make it into something better. She takes the time to understand the why when so many only want to know what happened and move on. Her work is a testament to her personal strength, commitment to her community, and desire to leave the world a better place.

Sanford’s goal is not to churn out only doctors, lawyers, and professors. The goal has always been to provide each student the platform from which they can rise up to meet their own personal goals and serve the community. Beth exemplifies this in every way. continued on page 42

Peter Jennings ’68 presented by Kathy Hughes ’68

W

hile at Sanford, Peter served as dorm proctor, on the parking committee, as an usher and senior class treasurer.

He was most known for his athletic talent as a part of the soccer and wrestling teams.

Peter was born in Frankfurt, Germany while his father was helping to set up the West German banking and financial systems after the war. Peter was raised with 5 brothers and sisters and 2 cousins—moving between Haiti, Panama, Dominican Republic and Paraguay. After working for US AID and the US Embassy overseas, his father settled the family in Maryland.

A graduate of the Class of 1968, Peter went on to Keystone Junior College in La Plume, Pennsylvania and later graduated from Rider College in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

In 1972, Peter began working for the Monroe Calculator Company in Baltimore. After being held up at his apartment one evening, he decided to enter the security protection field.

He worked for Electro Protective, ADT and Honeywell/ Stanley Security, retiring after 42 years in November of 2017.

Peter and his wife Janice live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is the father of two daughters, who he coached in soccer for the Optimist Soccer program. He has volunteered for Hospice and plans on doing it again along with volunteering for the Shepherd’s Center, Time Banks (Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods) and World Relief. They enjoy hosting foreign exchange students from the State Department’s Wake Forest University Ben Franklin Fellows program. His soccer career that he enjoyed at Sanford and Rider College continues as he plays competitively—just returning from a national tournament in Florida where his over-65 team came in third out of ten. As Peter says, “Life is good.”

While at Sanford, Jeffrey was a member of the student

council, choir, had roles in multiple Sanford performances, was a member of the Booster Club, and played in the band.

Dr. Jeffrey Kellogg, a clinical child psychologist, received his doctorate from Rutgers University, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology in 1982. After directing child, adolescent and family services for a regional mental health center in rural Alabama, followed by a position providing crosscultural and mental health services to expat families living in Malaysia, Dr. Kellogg moved to southern Illinois and began work with children and their families for the past 36 years.

Before attending Rutgers, Jeffrey served in the US Peace Corps in Jamaica, West Indies, training guidance counselors and developing a child psychiatric unit at the national hospital.

In addition to maintaining a full-time practice, seeing mostly adolescent clients, Dr. Kellogg has worked closely with regional Headstart programs, The Center Comprehensive Services residential program (adolescence with traumatic brain injuries), adolescence recovering from burns, and is a consultant with Gateway Foundation (adolescent substance abuse treatment center), and is a clinical supervisor for psychological services at Brehm Preparatory School, a boarding school for high school students with learning issues. He was a longtime member of the advisory board of the Adolescent Health Center and is a current board member of Rainbow Café, a drop-in center for GLBTQ youth. He continues to provide expert testimony to regional courts and assist in the training of attorneys in representing children. He has been an adjunct assistant professor to the Southern Illinois University—Carbondale psychology department since 1997 and is a clinical supervisor for clinical child doctoral students at the SIU clinical center. As a balance to these professional activities he enjoys stewarding 70 acres of the Shawnee National Forest where he and his family are developing a primitive retreat center.

Jason Quillen ’99 • April 6, 1981–November 9, 2017 Jason Quillen passed away the evening of Thursday, November 9, 2017. Jason was born on April 6, 1981 to Frank and JoAnn (Money) Quillen and was a wonderful older brother to Ryan and devoted husband to Jennifer. Jason was born and raised in Delaware, graduated from Sanford School and obtained his undergraduate degree in history from University of Delaware. Jason married Jennifer Ketay on April 29, 2017. He was a loving fur-father to his “dog-ter” Dakota, whom he adopted in 2011. Jason loved rock music. He was an avid Pearl Jam and Counting Crows fan and loved going to concerts with his friends and Jennifer. He also enjoyed traveling. He experienced a semester in London and loved to go on vacations with his family, most recently a memorable trip to California. Jason was witty and had a great sense of humor. He always had a joke to lighten the mood and loved giving gag gifts at birthdays and holidays. He was employed as an anti-money laundering analyst at Citibank. Jason’s biggest source of pride was his family. Jason is survived by his grandparents, Blaine Money (Poppop) and Sara Money (Mommom) (Middletown, Delaware); parents, Frank and JoAnn Quillen (Hockessin Delaware and West Palm Beach, Florida); brother, Ryan and his wife, Kate (Baltimore, Maryland); and his wife, Jennifer.

Ellie MacLean Mattersdorff ’46 • November 23, 1928–November 1, 2017

Ellie Mattersdorff passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, three weeks shy of her 89th birthday. She died at home from complications of a stroke, with her son and friends at her side. Ellie grew up in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania and in Cranford, New Jersey. At the start of her junior year in high school, she transferred to Sanford School, in Hockessin, Delaware, a formative experience in her life. The school’s motto was (and is) “No Talent Lies Latent.” She liked history, loved drama, hated sports, and became an outstanding student. Because the school was so small, it could only muster a field hockey team if Ellie played, which she reluctantly did, and about which she complained to her family in later years.

Outside of field hockey, she loved every minute of her time at Sanford, staying in touch with all 18 of her classmates. While she was at Sanford, Ellie’s parents moved to Boston, and for most of the years until 1963, Ellie called Boston home. Rather than attend college, she found a job as a costumer in the Brattle Theater Company in Brattle Square, Cambridge. Ellie enrolled in secretarial school at Radcliffe College. She became a lightning quick typist and stenographer and began a career as a secretary, working in the Government Department at Harvard University, where she knew young Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski, and then in the Economics Department at MIT. Ellie was working in Economics at MIT in 1958, when graduate student and budding professor Guenter H. (Gus) Mattersdorff arrived in Cambridge and enrolled in a summer seminar. They married in 1960 and moved to New York, where he held a job as a house economist at McGraw Hill Publishing. Their first son, Donald, was born in 1961, and a second son, Peter, was born in 1963. An accomplished artist, she had an absurdist sense of humor—appreciated Monty Python’s Flying Circus, for example—and found comedy in many aspects of daily life. Her legacy is one of kindness and generosity to friends and strangers alike. She cared very little about politics and not at all about economics or business. Her realms were art and beauty, including performance and music, the rich tapestry of history, and the power of love and generosity to build community and bring peace. She leaves behind two sons, Donald and Peter, their wives, and four grandchildren who will miss her very much.

Stephanie Tramdack Cash ’68 • January 13, 1951–December 14, 2017 Stephanie Cash passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017. Stephanie resided in Cape May Court House, NJ, and was the beloved wife of Richard Cash. In addition to her husband, she also leaves behind a brother, Philip Tramdack (Marianne Hooker), of New Castle, PA, and several nieces and nephews. Stephanie attended school in Collingdale, PA, and graduated as valedictorian from Sanford School in Hockessin, DE. In 1972, she received a BA in English from Bryn Mawr College.

In 1978, she earned an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Stephanie began her professional career as a financial analyst with Delaware Investment Advisers in Philadelphia. She then served as a program manager with the Scherman Foundation and a portfolio manager with Scudder, Stevens & Clark, both in New York. She then moved to Montreal, first as a portfolio manager with Bolton Tremblay, Inc., and then as an institutional portfolio strategist for McNeil, Mantha Inc., and Lévesque, Beaubien, and Geoffrion. chartered financial analyst. After meeting Richard Cash in 1989 she soon relocated to Cape May Court House and married Richard. Stephanie left the financial industry and became a teacher of English and French. She taught at Wildwood High School, Port Republic School, and Atlantic Cape Community College and also conducted evening classes for the Cape May County Technical School District. Since 2004, Stephanie has worked as a freelance French-to-English translator of financial, energy, and maritime documents for international clients. She was involved with several professional groups, including the Delaware Valley Translators Association and the American Translators Association. In recent years, she has been a principal of Dias Creek Oysters, LLC and served as president of the Cape May Oyster Cooperative. Stephanie was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in Stone Harbor. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women. Her many sterling qualities were apparent to anyone who knew her—her good-heartedness, her warmth, and her marvelous dynamism and joie de vivre. Her gift for friendship was second to none.

Stephanie was a Renaissance woman in her interests. She was a student of ballet, Argentine tango, qi gong, opera, and fashion, as well as language, literature, and politics. Stephanie was a rare and wonderful person who lifted the spirits of everyone she touched.

W. André Harvey ’59 • October 9, 1941–February 6, 2018 André Harvey passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. André was a renowned American realist sculptor and was known for his bronze sculptures, intricate sculpted gold jewelry, found object collages, and works in granite. André created his work through knowing his subjects intimately and working hand-in-hand with the foundry. He was never satisfied until the essence of the subject was reflected in his work. His attention to detail included the creation of his own tools appropriate to the subject. André accomplished a level of reality seldom seen in contemporary realistic bronzes. The inspiration for André’s sculptures often began in the fields and woods of his beloved Brandywine Valley. André said “it’s humbling to focus on the permanence of nature, the magical charm of a praying mantis, a hornet, a frog, or the scent of honeysuckle.” Perhaps André’s most well-known sculpture, Helen, a full sized bronze barnyard pig, has delighted visitors to the Brandywine Museum of Art for over 30 years. André described his process in creating Helen this way: “During the summer months I spent doing the clay, this sow became the friendliest of the six pigs in the pen. I would jump the fence, set up my portable sculpting table, and give her a call. Of all the pigs, she was the only one that would come to me without being bribed by a fistful of corn. She would amble up to within a few feet of me, and then assume a sitting position—almost as if she had planned to sit for a portrait.” André graduated from the University of Virginia in 1963. In 1969, after working both as a journalist in New York City and an educator in Wilmington, Delaware, he and his wife, Bobbie, traveled throughout Europe and Morocco. During this period, André worked as an apprentice with abstract sculptor Michel Anasse in Vallauris, France. Upon their return home André began creating realistic sculptures inspired by his childhood in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. André’s first high-profile exposure was the exhibition of five sculptures for the windows created by Gene Moore for Tiffany & Company in New York City. Since that time, in a career spanning over four decades, André has produced an extensive volume of work which has been featured in numerous public and private collections and in exhibitions both nationally and internationally. André was a fellow and former board member of the National Sculpture Society and received the society’s Joel Meissner Award and the Tallix Foundry Award. In June 2017, the Hagley Museum and Library compiled an oral history “Interview with André and Bobbie Harvey.” Photographs of his life’s work can be viewed at andreharvey.com. André’s unique spirit will live on through his art and through the enduring friendships he formed during his lifetime. His warmth, gentle spirit and playfulness enriched many lives. André is survived by his wife Bobbie, partner in his creative life for 54 years; his brothers Roy,Tad, Bruce, and sister Sally. He is predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Jeanne Harvey, and his brother Rusty.

William “Bill” D. Pratt ’55 • August 1, 1936–February 11, 2018 Bill Pratt of Kennett Square, PA, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2018, after a short illness. Due to the loving care of his devoted wife, Bill was able to live out his life in the home he loved. Bill died surrounded by love. Bill was born and lived his entire life in beautiful Chester County. He attended Sanford School and was a proud member of the Class of 1955. Bill had a strong work ethic and spent 27 years at the Kennett Square, PA, post office before retiring in 1992. He found great pleasure in the simple things of life. He adored his family and loved all sports. Bill and Judy were blessed with many years of retirement together. They truly loved and enjoyed one another. Whenever one would visit, Judy was most likely in the kitchen and Bill had a game on TV. You were always made to feel welcomed. Bill was predeceased by his mother and father, Esther Garrett and Edward LeRoy Pratt, and his brother, Richard L. Pratt. He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Judith E. Pratt; two daughters, Susan Pratt Murphy (Kevin) and Sandra Leigh Pratt; three stepchildren, Sharon L. Eggers (Steve), Jeffrey W. Riggs and Joseph H. Coover, Jr. He was a loving “Pop-Pop” to 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Bill was a gentle, kind and selfless man with a wonderful sense of humor. His passing leaves a deep void in many hearts but he leaves the gift of many life lessons and countless fond memories. He will be dearly missed and forever loved.

Kendrick Lee, Jr. ’56 • February 12, 1938–February 14, 2018 Kendrick Lee, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Hospice of the Chesapeake Mandrin House, Harwood, MD. Ken, who was born February 12, 1938, in Boston, MA, moved to Washington, DC, for college and stayed. He worked for the Bureau of the Budget and for the Department of Health and Human Services. He leaves his wife, Sandra; two sons, Kendrick and Thomas (Rita); and two adored granddaughters, Azriel and Moriah.

Gordon Spencer Kahn ’51 • October 14, 1933–February 24, 2018 Gordon Kahn of Omaha, NE, passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Gordon is survived by Hannelore N. Rogers, his loving partner and wife of 36 years; his nephew Alexander Kahn; sisters-in-law Helen Kalocsa, Patricia Neutzner, and Mary Ellen Kahn; brother-in-law Heinz Neutzner; nieces-in-law and their children. He attended Swarthmore College and graduated from Temple University with a degree in theatre arts. He had a lively career in Atlantic City, New York, Genoa (Italy), Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Omaha as a classical music and jazz radio host, actor, teacher, writer about theatre and music, and theatre critic. He came from a musical family, including his father, a violist in the Philadelphia Orchestra, and was a proud member of the SAG-AFTRA union. He taught English in Genoa and was fluent in Italian. He and Hannelore loved traveling and experiencing the cultures and people of Egypt, Russia, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, and Peru. In 2013 he and Hannelore moved to Omaha, where her family has lived since immigrating to America from Germany in 1954. Judith Ann Arning ’70 • May 19, 1951–April 5, 2018 Judi Arning of Lewes, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 05, 2018, at Beebe Healthcare. She was born Saturday, May 19, 1951 in Asheville, NC, daughter of the late Louis and Margaret Arning. Ms. Arning earned bachelors’ degrees from both Brandywine College and Radford College, after which she enjoyed a career with the DuPont Chemical Company as an engineer. Ms. Arning’s interests were many and varied. She liked playing golf and was an accomplished field hockey player, in addition to being a member of the Bell Choir as a tenor singer, Cheer Harbor Lights president, and an attentive caregiver. Above all, Ms. Arning was a loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt, and friend. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Ms. Arning was preceded in death by her twin sister, JoAnn Martin, in 2012. She is survived by her wife, Mildred McCafferty; Jennie E. Martin, Judith Ann “Meg” Martin-Gray, Grady Allen Martin, and Yates Martin.
