GLOSSARY # 802.11ac: Also known as “11ac,” is a Wi-Fi standard providing high-performance throughput up to Gigabit wireless speed and operating solely on the 5 GHz band. 802.11k: Defines and exposes radio and network information to facilitate the management and maintenance of a mobile Wireless LAN. 802.11k allows the client to more quickly determine which AP it should roam to next and how. 802.11n: Also known as “11n,” is the 4th-gen Wi‑Fi standard that operates at data rates up to 600 Mbit/s. It can operate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency bands. 802.11r: IEEE standard for fast roaming, introduces a new concept of roaming where the initial handshake with the new AP is done even before the client roams to the target Access Point. 802.11r allows encryption keys to be stored on all of the APs in a network. A client doesn’t need to authenticate to a backend server every time it roams to a new AP, avoiding latency that would delay network connectivity.
A Access Control List (ACL): Access Control List, ACL is a software feature allowing the router, switch, or AP the rights to allow, deny, or audit a trusted network device via a list of access control rules and traffic patterns. Auto Voice VLAN: Voice VLAN is part of VLAN functionality, enabling access ports to recognize and carry IP voice traffic from IP phones across the network.
C Captive Portal (Wi-Fi Hotspot): A software feature is used to service a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing IT administrators to block wireless clients access until user verification has been established.
Clustering: Clustering, or AP Clustering, provides a single point of administration and lets IT administrators view, deploy, configure, and secure a wireless network as a single entity rather than a series of separate wireless AP's.
D Denial of Service (DoS) Prevention: One firewall rule is to detect attempts to cause a sever overload. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks force the target to reset, consume its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service, or obstruct the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately. DHCP Snooping: A security feature that acts like firewall between untrusted network devices and trusted DHCP servers (assigning IP addresses). It helps to validate DHCP messages received from untrusted sources and filter out any invalid messages. Dual WAN Failover: If the primary WAN port connection fails, the secondary backup WAN port will take over the traffic connection instantly. Dual WAN Load Balancing: Load balancing distributes inbound traffic equally to every WAN port to make the best use of available bandwidth. It also can prevent traffic from unequal distribution and congestions.
E EEE (IEEE 802.3az): Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a set of enhancements to the Ethernet family that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity. Also known as IEEE 802.3az standard technology to reduce the power required for Ethernet.
GLOSSARY I
Q
IGMP Snooping: This software feature allows a network switch to listen in IGMP conversations between network clients and routers and helps to maintain a traffic map of which links IP multicast traffic streams in order to optimize network performances.
Quality of Service (QoS): The ability to assign different priorities to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow.
L Layer 2+ Switching: All network devices are communicating and bridging over Layer 2 network standard protocols. A Layer 2 Switch can act as a multiport bridge, allowing traffic in and out based on the network device’s MAC address. Layer 3 Static Routing: In order to route traffic between VLANs, network Layer 3 routed interfaces must be configured through configuration and assignment of network routing routes for better traffic efficacy and performance.
M MIMO (Multiple-Input and multiple-Output): A wireless technology that uses multiple transmitters and receivers to transfer more data at the same time. All wireless products with 802.11n support MIMO, reaching higher speeds than products without.
R RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) server: The RADIUS server manages access to the Internet or internal wired and wireless networks through a set of security rules in authentication and accounting, applied for network security enhancement. Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), i.e. IEEE 802.1w standard, is an enhancement of STP that provides faster spanning tree convergence time versus standard STP.
S SFP (mini-GBIC) Combo Port: A shared Ethernet port of SFP fiber slot and copper port combination, for either a cable plugged into the copper port or a fiber cable in the SFP slot. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP): Protocol used to manage network devices on IP networks, exposing management data that can be used by IT administrators for remote network access and management.
MU‑MIMO (Multiple-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output): MU-MIMO routers and access points are able to break up their bandwidth into separate, individual streams that each share the connection evenly, no matter the application.
Spanning Tree Protocol (STP, i.e. the IEEE 802.1d standard), Protocol ensuring a loop-free topology for any bridged Ethernet network, preventing any bridge loops for better performance.
Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP), IEEE 802.1s standard later merged into IEEE 802.1q standard. It's an extension to RSTP to further develop the usefulness of VLANs.
Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI): Firewall rule that monitors active connections and uses this information to determine which network packets to allow through the firewall.
P Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+): PoE (IEEE 802.3af standard) delivers DC power and data to powered devices over a single standard Ethernet cable, using up to 15.4 watts per Ethernet port. PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at standard) is the latest enhancement using up to 30 watts per Ethernet port.
V VLAN (i.e. the IEEE 802.1q standard): VLANs help to separate different network devices and traffic communicating to each other based on different VLAN IDs assigned, independent of physical location. VPN: Enables two private networks to establish a secure and encrypted connection tunnel across the Internet. It allows remote users to access business intranet resources and information from anywhere.
W Workgroup Bridge: Workgroup Bridge mode can be used as a range extender to enable the SSID to provide access to remote or hard-to-reach networks. WPA/WPA2 Enterprise: Both WPA and WPA2 Enterprise are wireless security encryption with 802.1x authentication methods.
