DBA OVERVIEW

The UNC Charlotte Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) is a professional degree taught in an executive format that will provide doctorallevel preparation for business professionals who wish to enhance their understanding of business theory, integrate cutting-edge business theory and practice, and address complex business problems through advanced research methodology. The executive-style DBA is broad in scope, cutting across business disciplines to address applied problems facing executives in the workplace. The DBA is a three-year (six-semester), lockstep program consisting of 18 courses. Courses in the DBA program will be offered in an executive format (e.g., five, three-day residencies per semester) to accommodate the needs of business executives who work full time.

The DBA curriculum includes three major curricular components: (1): research content focus and research methodology, (2) practice-focus areas, and (3), dissertation. The DBA will be offered in an executive format, where students will spend one long weekend in Charlotte, N.C., per month for 10 months out of the year. Students will take three classes at a time, with each class meeting face-to-face for eight hours during the monthly long weekend.

Franz W. Kellermanns is the Addison H. & Gertrude C. Reese Endowed Chair in International Business and Professor of Management in the Belk College of Business at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Prior to his move to UNC Charlotte, he held positions at the University of Tennessee and Mississippi State University. He holds a joint appointment with the Center for Family Business at the WHU–Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. His research interests include international business, strategy process and entrepreneurship with a focus on family business research. Dr. Kellermanns publishes extensively with doctoral students worldwide and has served on over 30 dissertations. He is an editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and former Associate Editor of Family

Business Review. He has published in journals such as Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Family Business Review, Academy of Management Learning and Education, among others. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Group and Organization Management, Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal. He is a co-editor of the recent books “Handbook of Strategy Process Research” and “Innovating Strategy Process” and co-editor of the forthcoming “Family Business Companion.”
