I am amazed how our life’s journey, our story, can be so circular and ever surprising.

My name is Nigel Shawn Williams, the new Artistic Director of the Belfry Theatre. I was first invited here by Michael Shamata to direct Serving Elizabeth by or Marcia Johnson in 2021, and again to direct Intimate ks Ph o to Apparel by Lynn Nottage in 2022. What I remember most graphy about that time was the care and grace I received from the entire staff at the Belfry, the pursuit for artistic excellence from the production team, and the passion and curiosity the audience had for great theatre. I left with the feeling that I hoped I would be able to come back and be a part of this extraordinary company, this rich community and share more stories!

The feelings of care and grace, and the pursuit for artistic excellence are qualities that I always strive to bring into the environments I work in. But, these attributes that the Belfry Theatre possesses are not manifested accidentally. They are created. They are invited. These are qualities of Michael Shamata. I know this because I was fortunate enough to first experience it when I first met and worked with Michael at the University of Windsor. Since then, our paths have crossed here and there, and there and here. And, here again at the Belfry Theatre. Being directed by Michael in The Lehman Trilogy in 2024 was a singular bright light in my career. I am succeeding a great man, a great mentor, a great friend. The circular and surprising nature of my path that brought me here is not lost on me. Nor is the responsibility to uphold and continue an environment of care and grace. This is the next Act in my story. I hope that you, our audience, will continue along this path with me as we share stories, and create great theatre that sparks conversations in an environment filled with care and grace.

Welcome to our 51st season! And welcome to Nigel with his enthusiastic vision and energy. In this transition period, we have already started working together, and I am so excited for the upcoming years at the Belfry!

At Native Earth we produced an early workshop of Frances’ script, and it gives me so much pleasure that graphy the Belfry now produces a full production. I am proudest of the fact that Kathleen is making their directorial debut here, and that we have brought together a wonderful team to collectively transform their vision into a great production. Enjoy the show! or
