STARRING
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
All my best wishes to you for a year ahead full of blessings and joy—and Canadian art—!
I am thrilled to welcome the company of Maanomaa, My Brother to the Belfry—and to welcome you to the artfully created world of this play. I t is rare to find a piece of theatre that tells its story so beautifully through the seamless blending of movement and dialogue. Rarer still to have the playwrights onstage performing it—!
Welcome Tawiah and Brad, and the legendary Philip Akin—who, as Artistic Director of Obsidian Theatre in Toronto, fought for and created space for Black voices in Canadian theatre. His impact is felt across the country, and we have been so fortunate to have him here, helming this spare and profound production—!
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Happy New Year and welcome back to the Belfry.
It will be a year of change. As most of you know, Michael is stepping away from the Belfry in September, and we are currently meeting candidates to step into his enormous shoes! I am sad, nervous, excited—simultaneously!
Some of you attended our Open House early in the year and learned more about our 50-year history and the secrets of this beautiful Heritage building—a jewel in the city of Victoria! It has changed so much over the many years of its varied existence as a chapel, dormitory, shelter, medical office, and now, theatre!
Still more change is happening. As I am writing this, the production team are replacing our House Lights—the small lights above you that illuminate the aisles and let you read your programs! The team has removed the failing 30-year-old instruments, and then built and installed a completely new system. I t has been a lot of work but well worth it! We hope you like it.
Thank you all for your support that allows us to burnish this gem of a theatre!
