New Year, New Game Plan
by Joaquin Salvade
Things are looking good for football. Our Belen Wolverines have hit the ground running with their opening pre-season game against Palmer Trinity, yet the obstacles they will have to hurdle this season are plenty. Luckily, Coach Nicholas “O” Oyarzun plans to hammer down the teams defenses, empower their strength, and encourage them to be the champions they truly are. In a recent interview regarding our current lineup, Coach O had this to say: “Yeah we got a good bunch this year, but that by no means are we taking it easy. I’m coming out with my hair on fire every practice or workout or game and letting these guys know it’s time to work. We’ve got a lot of talent, but I make sure that they get better—even if it’s just a little bit— every single day.” With our new lineup led by hard-working hammers like senior Gabriel Lacayo, and offensive powerhouses like senior Amari Johnson, and other heavy hitters, the wolverines have no shortage of talent, yet Coach O insists he demands more from them, both through intense workouts and intricate practices as well as by inspiring the “same love” for the game and the team that he has.
When asked what he meant, he claimed: “We wanna make sure the most important thing, is that the players care about the team and care about each other. We want to make sure we come together as brothers and learn, throughout the season, how to become better as brothers. Whether that’s putting them through tough workouts together or even having them butt heads during drills, its important that they grow together throughout.” With returning veterans and promising newcomers, the Wolverines enter this season with realistic championship aspirations. The combination of upgraded facilities, experienced leadership, and Coach O’s brotherhood philosophy creates the perfect storm for success. As the team continues to gel throughout the season, fans can expect to see not just individual talent shine, but a cohesive unit that fights for each other on every play.

Stand-Out Senior: Gabriel Lacayo
by Joaquin Salvade
While the previous senior class enjoys their new lives in their various colleges, and explore their futures, we welcome our brand new senior athletes, all of whom have stepped up and provide a sense of leadership, community, and heart to the team. One of whom, has gone above and beyond this year and claimed the title of captain. As one of 6 different captains, defensive end Lacayo wears the title proudly, and focuses on motivating, leading, and setting an example for the team as best he can. When asked how he claimed such a title, he said this: “I think I’m the vocal guy who isn’t afraid to say something in front of a group. It’s really all about how you separate yourself from your teammates and practice everyday to set an example. I think just being willing to tell kids when they did something wrong but also willing to tell kids good job.” Based on his words and his behavior during practices and games, it’s clear that Lacayo carries a lot of passion for both the game and his team. He works twice as hard and leads by example, and isn’t afraid to speak up when his teammates are in need. Above all else, he makes sure his teammates feel seen. This is especially important as the football trainings have gotten increasingly more intense. But, thanks to the excellent coaching and leadership through Lacayo and the other captains, they seem to be taking effect. “We are much stronger and faster than last year’s team thanks to the tough schedule. But because of that, the team is much more united than last year’s team. We are definitely tougher, but also way more confident, and much more united than last year’s team. I have a lot of hope for this year and the opportunity to lead these guys as a senior.” With Hialeah High, Lacayo’s leadership will be
put to the test. But if the team’s improved performance against Palmer Trinity any indication, his influence has already transformed this squad into serious contenders. We can’t wait to see more of Lacayo’s leadership firsthand, and how it might guide the Wolverines to a fantastic season.
