Gerard Manly Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889)
Gerard Manly Hopkins was an English poet, Roman Catholic convert, and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous 20th-century fame established him among the leading Victorian poets. His experimental explorations in prosody (especially sprung rhythm) and his use of imagery established him as a daring innovator in a period of largely traditional verse. Hopkins studied the classics at Oxford from 1863-67. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Manresa House, Roehampton, in 1868 and studied philosophy at St. Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst in 1870. His poem, The Wreck of the Deutschland, reflects his reconciling terrible events with God’s higher purpose. Hopkins was a founding member of Oxford University Newman Society in 1878 for Catholic students.
Andrea Pozzo, S.J. (1642-1709)
Andrea Pozzo, born in Trento, Italy was a Jesuit Brother, Baroque painter and architect, decorator, stage designer, and art theoretician. He was best known for his grandiose frescoes using an illusionistic technique called quadratura, in which architecture and fancy are intermixed. His masterpiece is the nave ceiling of the Church of Sant’Ignazio in Rome which set the standard for the decoration of Late Baroque ceiling frescos throughout Catholic Europe.
Christopher Clavius, S.J. (1538-1612)
Christopher Clavius was a German Jesuit mathematician and astronomer who was the main architect of the modern Gregorian calendar. In his last years he was probably the most respected astronomer in Europe and his textbooks were used for astronomical education for over fifty years in Europe and even in more remote lands (on account of being used by missionaries). Clavius joined the Jesuit order in 1555. He studied theology at the Jesuit Collegio Romano in Rome. Within the Jesuit order, Clavius was almost single-handedly responsible for the adoption of a rigorous mathematics curriculum in an age where mathematics was often ridiculed by philosophers and theologians. In logic, Clavius’ Law is named after him.
St. Francis Xavier, S.J. (1506-1552)
Saint Francis Xavier was a pioneering Roman Catholic missionary born in the Kingdom of Navarre (Spain). He, along with St. Ignatius of Loyola, was one of the first seven Jesuits who dedicated himself to the service of God in a small chapel at Montmartre on August 15, 1534. He led an extensive mission into Asia, mainly in the Asian Portuguese Empire of the time. He was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism, most notably in India and Japan. Xavier met Ignatius of Loyola while they were both students at the University of Paris. Ignatius of Loyola would watch Francis compete in track events. Destined for academic success in the line of his noble family, Ignatius reputedly turned his sights to a life of Catholic missionary service.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. (1881-1955)
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, born in Orcines, was a French philosopher and Jesuit priest. His father, an amateur naturalist, collected stones, insects and plants, and promoted the observation of nature. Teilhard’s spirituality was awakened by his mother. When he was 12, he went to the Jesuit college of Mongré, in Villefranche-sur-Saône, where he completed baccalaureates of philosophy and mathematics. Then, in 1899, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Aix-en-Provence. He was trained as a paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of Peking Man. Teilhard conceived the idea of the Omega Point and developed Vladimir Vernadsky’s concept of Noosphere. Teilhard’s The Phenomenon of Man is a sweeping account of the unfolding of the cosmos.
John Carroll, S.J. (1735-1815)
John Carroll was born of Irish ancestry in the British colony of Maryland. He entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 18 and was ordained in 1769. Fr. Carroll, S.J., was appointed the first bishop and archbishop in the United States. Bishop Carroll founded Georgetown University and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bishop Carroll’s brother Daniel was a signer of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. His cousin Charles Carroll was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first U.S. Senator from Maryland. It is notable that John Carroll, along with Benjamin Franklin, was sent to Canada to convince the Canadians to remain neutral in the American Revolutionary War.
Athanasius Kircher, S.J. (1602–1680)
Athanasius Kircher, S.J. was a German Renaissance scholar and polymath who published around forty major works, most notably in the fields of comparative religion, geology and medicine. He was one of the first people to observe microbes through a microscope, and theorized that the bubonic plague was spread by infectious microorganisms. While not busy descending into volcanoes, surviving shipwrecks and beating the plague, Kircher invented clocks, robots and the first megaphone. He has been honored with the title “Master of a Hundred Arts.”
St. Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (1542-1621)
Born on October 4, 1542, in central Italy and died on September 17, 1621, in Rome. He studied at the Universities of Padua and Leuven where he was the first Jesuit to teach. As bishop, Bellarmine put into effect the reforming decrees of the Council of Trent and was considered a possible candidate for the papacy in the conclave of 1605. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He is also widely remembered for his role in the Giordano Bruno affair, the Galileo affair, and the trial of Friar Fulgenzio Manfredi. He was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church on June 21, 1930, and his feast day is celebrated on both September 17 and May 13.
José Rubiños, S.J. (1898-1963)
José Rubiños was born in La Coruña, Spain in 1898. He was a prominent professor at Belen School in Cuba where he taught for over three decades. Among his most outstanding publications is Covadonga, the only epic written in Spanish and Galician and for which he received a gold medal at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. At the time of his death the Spanish press published: “The Spanish language has lost one of its most brilliant luminaries.” During his exile in Panama he composed Las 100 Mejores Poesías Panameñas. He devoted his last years to teaching at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami where he continued his vocation with discipline and love. He joined the church triumphant in Miami, Florida on December 3, 1963
The Brigadier is the one member of the senior class who best embodies the characteristics of Jesuit education. This senior has been recognized by his peers, along with the administration, faculty, and staff of Belen Jesuit as being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. Because this student has exemplified these traits, he has earned the title of Brigadier, and will address his classmates at the commencement exercises.
O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.
The cover design by local artist, Jeannette Aquino, is a composition with Our Lady of Belen, the patroness of our school, in the foreground. Behind Our Lady of Belen is the Class of 2024 Alumni Logo. The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is in the background. The Garrido Family Plaza and hallways are also visible in the background.

The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown.
While European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress, American colleges and universities generally have adopted the Intercollegiate Code for Academic Costumes. This code specifies design characteristics of gowns, hoods, caps and tassels, including pattern, material, color, trimmings, etc.
For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subjects are as follows:
