Rotating as cashie r and front service clerk , Parets really made a difference in his customers ' shopping experience " It was great because I had a chance to see all the fine looking moms shop and I got paid at the same time. What more can you ask for in a summer job?"

Work during your summer vacation? Who would want to do that?
While some people spend their summer lives at the beach or up in the club, others spend it asking "Would you like fries with that?" and "Debit or credit?" The question that people with summer jobs must ask themselves is whether they prefer making little money but having fun during during their work, or making more money but spending their summer days behind a grill and wearing a funny hat. With jobs ranging from working at Belen's Summer Camp to McDonalds on Miller and 137th, Belen students were able to show the world the way they get down in the work place.

DANCE TO
THE BIGGEST DANCE IN BELEN HISTORY!! The Kickoff Dance was the biggest dance ever thrown by the Student Council. "This dance was what it was because of all the hard work put into it," said Student Council Vice President Louis Jane. As you can see in the picture below, the Central Patio was filled with kids from different schools, creating the effect of a nightclub. The lights were off the hook and the light show was the same light show as at Club Space.

"With our new facilities Belen is not too far off from being the New World School of the Arts in respect to private schools," Mr. Leo Williams, Drama teacher, said. Mr. Williams also took a firm stance stating that if Belen wants to continue its expansion it would have to focus more int the humanities and increasing the number of electives allowed in a year such as giving seniors three electives ·instead of two. The idea is that since recruiting for sports is not allowed and sinse caps on admissions from parochial schools are strictly enforced then giving our students more of a choice would be a way of expanding academically and attracting more students to Belen.

The new lgnatian Center for the Arts has a lot of interesting new features to it. Probably the most obvious is the theater that is being put to use immediately. The theatre has 665 seats, a state-of-the-art sound system, and a professional lighting system.The whole center for the arts is 44,000 square feet. The lgnatian Center for the Arts also has a 2-D art studio and a stagecraft studio. There are four classrooms for academic use, an orchestra and chorus rehearsal hall, and there are currently plans for a digital video and photography lab. The administration is planning to make the theater available to the public so that the facilities are in constant use.
The Courtyard of Poets is the second courtyard located in the new lgnation Center for the Arts. A poetry slam is in the works for February and a pre-Gala dinner party and a small art presentation have already taken place in the court of poets. We can expect more to come.
The Science Pavilion opened recently as well and its facilities are impressive. With a Smartboard in every room and labs in practically every room as well, the Science Pavilion is a true tool of the 21st century. The new track and football field are a great addition to the Athletic Department of Belen. Already the field allows for a more diversified Field Day and to host football, track and baseball games.

LONG WEEKENDS
Usually during the school year, there are random days where students have no school that lead into the weekend. "Long weekends are great; they give you time to kick back, relax, and enjoy the times with the ladies," said senior JD Moises. Many students spend this time wisely by either throwing parties, going to the movies, or just simply relaxing at home. Regardless of what each student does, many of them enjoy these limited opportunities and spend their limited time wisely.

With more restrictions imposed on students every year during lunch time, seniors Jason Machado and Ernie Perez took it upon themselves to spice things up a bit. Inspired by their days in Belen Summer Camp, they organized countless food eating competitions between students with the winners earning pride and respect. The classic showdowns between the twin Metcalfe brothers will go down in school history as being the grossest and most entertaining matches of the year. As competitors raced to eat everything from salad dressing to melted cheese, the crowd of students gained memories that will last a lifetime.
Brain Food: 7th grader Ignacio Jimeno decides to skip lunch and read during his free time. Completing homework during lunch is very common among Belen students.

2003 Homecoming kicked off with students showing their colors for the theme "Color Day." Although many students just decided to wear jeans and a regular shirt, some went all out with their school spirit. Several students even had their faces painted. On "Wacky Day," students brought out their best wardrobes to try to be the wackiest in school. Senior Alex Castro was the Cuban Shaft. "I just wanted to impersonate my hero- Mr. Valdes," he said.

Once a year the students of Belen get to represent their homerooms in head-to-head competition. It's a day students get a chance to show others what they'r made of. It's also a chance for the senior class to get back at the teachers who have tortured them without mercy throughout the years. Unfortunately, this year, the senior class tried their best, but came up short in the SeniorFaculty basketball game. Field Day was fun, despite the loss.

Pep rallies. The ending to one of the best days of the year. This is the time that students get to let loose and show how much spirit they have in the confines of their school. "Every year I look forward to this day. It's kind of sad that it's going to be the last Belen Pep Rally I will be part of," said senior Robert Suris. Every year, the Pep Rally is finished off by the Senior/Faculty game. "I think it's hilarious seeing some of our teachers go out and play basketball," said junior Jorge Salazar.

Linebacker Alex Castro had four sacks and Carlos Ortega kicked for two field goals. "It was a great morale booster especially for our tough game next week against Heritage," said Alonso-Mendoza with great enthusiasm.

A family... probably the best example in explaining the Belen community. With a third of our students on scholarship, a community centered on faith, and a strict up bringing how could the halls of Belen be seen as anything else? And dont think that Belen ends when the bell rings. With service projects in the Dominican Republic and Catholic Life Community meetings at night timee its obvious that Belen makes sure that its students are practicing Christians. With so much going on during and after school they also have spiritual and academic councelers to help you through the hectic high school years. To finish this introduction off here is something a graduate told me when he was sending his son to Belen ... "Once youve gone to Belen you belong to a big family that will always help eachother out."

?: Why did you decide to become a teacher?: It was something I just decided to do. I liked it a lot and I had been tutoring in college and I just decided to do it.
?: What will you remember most about your stay in Belen?: There are way too many good things to list them all, but it would have to be the interaction with my students.
?: What is your favorite part of the school day?: I would have to say, talking to my students about literature and asking them what they think about different pieces of writing.
?: If you weren't a teacher, what would be your profession today?: I would be playing the drums because I am a drum master and because I love to play them.

?: Why did you decide to become a teacher?: I was sitting in college during my senior year and I received a call from my high school because they needed a language teacher. So i just pursued it.

?: What is your favorite part of the school day?: I love homeroom time because everyone comes into my office and makes counseling appointments and we sit down and talk about everything.

This is my flrst year doing both and I can It wait to get really good so I can compete.

I love to ride the waves and just relax on the water.
?: How do you like Belen so far? It Is ok. I miss my old school and being with my friends, but I really like Belen. I like also that I can be on the Rowing Team as a 6th grader.
?: Have you found it easy to make friends at Belen?
Yeah. A lot of the kids who are in my grade are rowers and they all like the same stuff as me.
?: What exercises do you have to do for practice?
Running and going on the rowing machine. They make us run about 20 minutes every practice and row on the machines for 15 minutes. It 1 s a lot of work.

! : Well, my oldest brother was a basketball star, my middle brother doesn't really stick to one thing, and me, well, I just do nothing. I don't think I'll disappoint anyone with the Guardiola legacy though. I'm sure I'll leave my mark in Belen.

!: Ladies? Come on man, I'm a freshman. I have more important things on my mind like school and getting ready for my future . Do you honestly think I have time for girls? No way! Girls are overrated anyway I've never really been big on girls. They're stupid. I'd rather study. Studying is what's going to define me, not girls.
?: Smart kid. So what do you do when you're not studying? Assuming you have a life.
!: Not studying? I'm always studying! Ok, ok, maybe not always. I like to work on my toes, beat up my brothers, play some PS2 (Madden 2004 of course), and best of all eat. I never stop eating. ?: So how did you get involved into such a sport?
!: Well, I first began to play when I was in 6th grade. My friends invited me to play and I just got hooked.No other sport has been as exciting as paintball.
?: Where do you go play?
!: Well, it really depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I play in Rinker and other times I feel like playing speedball at Strike Force.
?: Paintballing must drill a pretty deep hole in your pocket. How do you pay for it all?
! : I'm part of a team that sponsors all my equipment. Everytime I win a competition I get new stuff.

! : My parents are really supportive. My dad will occasionally come and play. My brother also plays as well.

A DAY TO GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS BELEN'S THEOLOGY DEPARTMENT TAKES A HIGH SCHOOL FIELD TRIP TO GO SEE MEL GIBSON'S THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. AFTER MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS RETURNED, THEY HAD TUNA, PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY, OR EGG SALAD SANDWICHES IN OBSERVANCE OF LENT. FR. WILLIE GARCIA TUNON'S SJ THEOLOGY CLASS PAID A VISIT TO THE MEDITATION ROOM TO DISCUSS AND DEBATE ON VARIOUS TOPICS OF THE CONTROVERSIAL MOVIE. AT THE THEATER, MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA FROM UNIVISION, CHANNEL 6, AND THE MIAMI HERALD, INTERVIEWED STUDENTS, PARENTS AND FACULTY MEMBERS FOR THEIR REACTIONS TO THE FILM. RESPONSES WERE FEATURED LATER THAT DAY IN THE EVENING NEWS AND IN THE FOLLOWING DAYS IN THE HERALD. OVERALL, MOST FELT THE FILM WAS A POWERFUL EXPERIENCE WHICH SERVED TO REAFFIRM THEIR FAITH.

ONE REACTION IS THAT OF WATER (H20) AND SODIUM (NA+). THESE TWO ELEMENTS WHEN COMBINED YIELD AN EXPLOSIVE COMBINATION. THE SECOND REACTION IS DUE TO THE MIXING OF THE COMPONENTS USED IN THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION. WHEN STIRRED, THE TOP LAYER OF THE WATER BEGINS TO FIZZ AND THE WATER CHANGES COLOR TO A PINK DYE. THIS DEMONSTRATION PROVED TO BE A VERY IMPORTANT LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR THE FRESHMEN. MANY FRESHMEN WERE STUNNED AT THE REACTION THAT TWO SIMPLE INGREDIENTS SUCH AS WATER AND SODIUM COULD HAVE.

Clubs and organizations allow their members an opportunity to take outside interests to another level. After hours of classworkt students find time to participate in clubs of their choice as a diversion from academic pressures. These organizations allow them to build skills like leadership and commitment. Clubs like Key Club. Robotics. and Vincam bring Belen students closer to each other and the community. They allow students to meet others with their same interests.
Every year new clubs are born into Belen life. and every year more and more students begin to participate in the Belen community. As Dr. Armando Rodriguez always says. "Don't be a muerto."

Club is a club which revolves around the arts. ALPHA is an acronym for the clubs which are incorporated in it. Art, Literature, Photography, Humanities, Acting. All of these are separate clubs, and when their powers combine they form
ALPHA. ALPHA Clubs moderator is Ms. Beatriz Jimenez and its
President is Juan Flores; its Vice President is Daniel Urgelles; it's secretary is Victor Marmol and its treasurer is Oscar Guerrero. ALPHA Club sponsors a number of trips throught the first and second semester. Members get points for going on trips such as a Disney Trip, Vatican Exhibit, Tour de Ia Hispanidad, Fairchild Tropical Gardens. Members can also get points for going to see movies in theatres including: Pirates of the Caribbean, Sea biscuit, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Master and Commander, and Big Fish. There are also various other activities in which members can participate or visit for points. Some activities at Belen sponsored by ALPHA, are the annual Christmas Play at Belen and the Halloween Writing contest. There are also various plays which members can go see to get points like Jesus Christ Superstar, Annie, Death of a Salesman, and La Lechuga. For someoneto beconsidered an active member of ALPHA , he needs to have a minimum of 10 points for the first semester and 15 points for the second.

B.A.S.E.S., The Belen Academy for the Sciences of earth and Space, is a club composed of students searching for scientific truth. The club allows students to experience science hands-on. The club explores a wide variety of topics, from astronomy to meteorology to marine biology to radio and electronics.
B.A.S.E.S. as a whole unites all of these clubs together. Multiple clubs can perform many projects at a time, and this organization aims at keeping club unity while conducting these events. The B.A.S.E.S. Council, composed of the four main officers, can get involved in preparing activities for the individual clubs as well as for B.A.S.E.S. itself. The B.A.S.E.S. Board of Directors, composed of all the clubs' officers, makes goals for members of all science clubs and its members, representing- their individual clubs in a congress-like setting. At the First Annual B.A.S.E.S. Banquet awards for membership and dedication were distributed. It was an occasion filled with memories.

ARC is the place to be
The Belen Key Club has again fulfilled its commitment to the community, at home and abroad. With the help of its officers, Eric Knott, President, Santiago lturralde, Vice President, Eric Fernandez, Secretary, Miguel Marmol, Treasurer, and Julio Minsai-RuizandAdvisor Fr. Willie Garcia Tunon, SJ, and Kiwanis Advisor Rafael Ledesma this year's Key Club has undertaken many projects. The main projects this year were the Dominican Republic trips, Association for Retarded Citizens,-ARC, and Regis House. In the two trips to the Dominican Republic, led by Vice President Santiago lturralde, the club built a muchneeded bridge, and two schoolhouse additions. Weekly trips to tutor the kids at Regis House were led by Anthony Vega and the trips to ARC were led by Andrew Cuan and Adrian Gonzalez. Key Club also helped with the festivities of Belen's 150th year anniversary. With over 200 high school members, the club attended many other projects like the Champ Bowl-a-than, ARC Pledge for Kids, and blood drives. The main fund raisers were the Used Book Sale, the Domino Tournament, "Fiesta del Solar," the Wine and Cheese, and the Valentine's Flower Sale. "With Key Club's purpose in mind, to serve others, goals were set at the beginning of the year and plans were made toward its unfolding. We strived all year and I can say, without a doubt, that we have reached and exceeded our goals and even achievements made by past Belen Key Club years as well. It couldn't have been done without the members and the incredible staff!" said President Eric Knott.

Student Council has be one of the most active especially with regards to the 150 year anniversary of Belen. This year the school had its 150 year celebration and many other events to celebrate the anniversary. The school dances also were some of the biggest productions in Belen history. The dances, bringing in the most amount of money and people ever, had the help of Pete Diaz Productions. Pete Diaz Productions generously donated the majority of the equipment used in these dances. Pete Diaz Productions is the supplier of Club Space and they brought thesame equipment for the many dances. The Student Council also aided in many of the dedications of the buildings throughout the school. Having started off the year with negative $16, the Student Council was able to raise over $25,000.

Having brought in the largest crowd in Belen dance history. The 2003 Kickoff dance made an astounding $12,000. The dance was held in the Central Patio and was completely packed from wall to wall.

With every new school year comes the question. What kids are we going to get out for Cross Country in the 6th Grade? This year we were blessed with good talent and work habits. The "Baby Wolverines" were able to capture five first place finishes throughout the season. The team was led by the strong one, two, three punch of Max Echarte, Edward Smith and Brix Gomez. The supporting cast included Frankie
Malvan, Nik Nevin, Jonathan Goodman, Enrique Camos, and Carlos Padron. The team ran their way to the school's 6th ACC Title in 11 years. The future looks very promising for this group of Wolverines.

The Cross Country team is said to be the best team ever to come through Belen. The team qualified four runners in the Miami Herald's First Team All Dade, which is the most ever by Belen. The top three runners, which included senior Javo Cruz, and juniors Eddie Arguello and Paul Santuoso, were all under 16:05

The team's success was hindered by the injury of Cruz and yet they still managed to finish 3rd at the State Meet. Arguello ran a 15:18 5k to win the biggest meet in the state of Florida and to set the school record by 9 sec.

Adding to our proud history of athletic prowess, the team stepped up to the next level and they won the Dade County and District Championship. The team went undefeated in dual meets, including wins against our old rivals Gulliver and Ransom. This year swimmer Jeffrey Vivo made swimmer
history. He took second place in the 50 free, an event that he was favored to win. Then he later went on to win the state championship in the 100 free. The team had an amazing season and is looking forward to the fututre.

After an exciting year of play and a strong performance, the Gol f team prevailed regardless of the loss of four seniors out of the class of 2003. Coach Jay Perkins pulled the team together to help the Varsity Golf team finish fourth in their District. Julian Knight and Ricardo Escobar were the only two returning players. "The three 8th graders, Richie Massa, Andy Pumariega, and Alfredo Ro driguez, pulled off excellent performances this season. Th at really helped take the team to the top," said Julian Knight. Th y also had two players advance to Regionals: Richie Massa and Anthony Pumariega.

The Belen Hockey team was built on a foundation of hard work, discipline, and team unity. The fundamental concept has been that defense wins championships. This was proven last season as the Wolverines defeated a rival, high scoring Palmetto team 6-4 to win it all. The team follows the standards and ethics of Captain Gabriel Sagarduy, who after starting the season with four straight losses, demanded that they work harder and practice longer hours to achieve their goal. This season has continued to be successful, as the team added a tournament against the best teams in the state. Even though they lost to these teams, the experience has added a new dimension to the squad and a more exciting style of play.
The Junior High Hockey team was recently established, and they have taken off with a bang. They are currently undefeated and following in the footsteps of the high school team.

The 2003-2004 Junior High Basketball team had an exceptional season because of the outstanding teamwork it exhibited on and off the court. Led by second year coach , Mr. Thomas de Quesada, the team repeated as champions of the All Catholic Conference The team was very experienced because of the 12 eighth graders on the roster. The group was led all season by the hustle and charisma of Alex Iparraguirre and Matthew Hanlon. Daniel Ramos provided the necessary scoring punch off the bench, and
Joshua Espinosa, a two-year starter, provided an inside presence and outstanding scoring ability. Michael Garcia was the backbone of the team with his spectacular outside shooting and leadership by example approach In the end, what made the unit a special one was its commitment to defense. Defense propelled the team to its biggest victories all season against Epiphany and Gulliver Depth was also a contributor to the team's success and everyone was able to share in the enjoyment of the season.

Another successful season for the Junior Varsity Wolverines, led by Steven Agras, and Antonio Quezada with their ability to score at will and defend aggressively. Although they were the leaders, they had a great supporting cast. Kyle McDowell was the team's top defender, leading with the most steals. Fernando Aran was the team's "garbage man." He fought and dove for all loose balls. The team also appreciated the valuable experience that veteran JV players Andy Alonso and Chris Bralley possessed.

2003-2004 Basketball Team
The Varsity Basketball team had an amazing year making it all the way to regionals. Led by Head Coach
Jose Roca, the team compiled a 23-6 record. Alex Telleria led the team in scoring despite having a fracture in his foot. Overpowering center Raul Ordonez stood tall in the middle and piled up the rebounds all season long. Point guard Gaby Bermudez, despite being a sophomore, was a true leader and showed all year why he is one of the top prospects in Miami. The bench led by junior Chris Zumarraga, and seniors Robert Velasco and Eddy Nunez provided support when the starters were out of breath. During the year, the team beat rivals Gulliver Prep and St. Brendan in hard fought battles.

Strength, dedication, determination and honor, just a few words to describe what it takes to be part of the Wolverine Wrestling team. Senior captain and three-time state champion Jason Machado has played a major role in the development of the team during the unpredictable season. Machado is the only Belen wrestler to have ever won three consecutive state titles. In Miami-Dade he is 7th in such an achievement, and across the state, 31st. Having dominated throughout the

This season started off a bit bumpy, as most seasons do in Junior High. There were originally two teams, and then suddenly, only one team remained. The two teams, 6th Grade,and Junior High, merged into one and went throught
the season with a remarkable record of 73 . "I was just so excited that we even had a team when all the craziness stopped," said Coach Ivan Santa Cruz. "It was a great season, and I enjoyed every second of it."

The newest sport at Belen, rowing is one of the oldest and most challenging of all sports. Crew members utilize all major muscle groups in the body, legs, arms, chest, back and abdomen during frenzied races from 800 meters to 2,000 meters.ln its first year (2000-2001 ), the Varsity novice crew won 2nd place in the Florida state championship. In its first competition of 2001-2002, Belen Varsity, Novice and Freshmen Crews swept all eight events, winning eight gold medals. The Belen Crew is part of the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association, thegoverning body of high school rowing in the state. Belen races exclusively four-man and eight-man "sweep" boats in which each rower has one oar, alternating port and starboard along the boat. Each boat has a coxswain, who steers and directs the rowers.

The Junior High Baseball Team showed the ACC Conference that they were a force to be reckoned with. They ended with a 17-2-2 record. The team had a great pitching staff which managed to have four shut outs. The main weapon for the team was their explosive offense, scoring 10 points or more on 10 occasions.
The 6th Grade Baseball team was unbeatable. They went 10-0. The team was great overall; they had great pitching and defense while having a bunch of great hitters. They never scored under six runs in one game. The pitching staff was also superb, recording two shut outs and had a team ERA of 3.2.

The future of Belen Baseball looks very bright. Under the leadership of sophomores like Danny Rodriguez and Kris Garcia, the team had a very succesfull season. Mario Raja had a breakthrough year, doubling his win total of last year.
Nick Echevarria
The 2004 Belen Varsity Baseball team had a lot to Iive up to, with last year's team having a dream season making it to the State Championship Game. With a completed baseball facility and some key players returning, they were equipped with all the tools to succeed.
The team got off to a slow start but smoothed out some rough edges later on in the year. Key players like Gaby Hernandez, Joe Cunetta, and Matt Maranges were the leaders of the young team.

2004 marked the 30th year of Varsity Tennis and the 20th year of Junior High Tennis at Belen. Once again, both teams had excellent winning seasons. The Varsity team brought home the District Runner Up trophy and the Junior High team finished with a record of 5-1, including wins over archrivals Ransom Everglades and Gulliver.
Senior Steven Pessoa completed his four -year career at Belen with 60 wins and 12 losses, a District Championship,
a State Semi-Finals, and the Miami Herald All-County First Team. Seventh Grader Juan Bolona had the best year of all with a 13-0 record in Varsity and 6-0 in Junior High- a perfect season. Freshman Daniel Gonzalez-Mora went all the way to capture the District Championship at #4 Singles. 7th Grader Juan Fernandez reached the finals of the Varsity District Tournament and in Junior High was 5-1 for the season.

The Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleaders practiced hard all season and it showed. They made it all the way to nationals. They cheered on the football and basketball teams all season long. Team captain Jackie Carnero said, "This year was amazing. All the girls gelled together and we really performed well. We tried to keep the crowd in the game and make the game more enjoyable for everyone."

A family... probably the best example in explaining the Belen community. With a third of our students on scholarship. a community centered on faith. and a strict upbringing. how could the halls of Belen be seen as anything else? And don't think that Belen ends when the bell rings. With service projects in the Dominican Republic and Christian Life Community meetings at night timee its obvious that Belen makes sure that its students are practicing Christians. With so muCh going on during and after school. students also have spiritual and academic counselers to help them through the hectic middle and high school years. Other then studying hard and messing Belen students are always on the look out to earn money and spend it at the same time. Most of the money in school is spent on shirts 1 and candy bought at Mr. Jimmy Perez 1 s bookstore. Many students claim that Jimmy has started a monopoly due to the gigantic amounts of money he makes each day. Many students learn off of Mr. Jimmy Perez's great ways of business and take it with them out in the real world.

Fr. George Mungia SJ, Chief of "Our Lady Of Belen Jesuit Foundation," celebrated his Golden Anniversary in the Society of Jesus last September 6th.
He began his training as a Jesuit in his native Havana, Cuba, back in 1953. After his studies in Humanities, he went to the Pontifical University of Comillas, Spain, where he obtained a Licenciate in Philosophy.
He took Theology courses required for the priesthood at the Immaculate Conception College, Montreal, Canada.
Ordained a priest in 1967 along with our Fr. Pedro Cartaya SJ, he pursued studies in Economics in Fordham University, New York, where he obtained a Ph.D. in 1975. Formerly he had recieved a Licentiate in Social Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (1964).
Fr. Munguia has been a professor of Sociology and Economics at two universities in the Dominican Republic, the Pedro Henriquez Urena and the Catholic University, Madre y Maestra He has also taught at the prestigious Fordham University, New York, and at the renowned Gregorian University in Rome.
He joined the Belen faculty as a teacher and counselor in 1994 and has placed his financial skills at the service of our beloved educational institution.
He is very well liked in the school, and his pastoral ministry is much appreciated in the Parish Our Lady of the Divine Providence, where he regularly presides over the Eucharist.

Last November 4th Fr. Oscar Mendez SJ was honored at the end of the Eucharist celebrated in our Gymnasium on the occasion of his 50 years as a Jesuit. Fr George Munguia SJ was also honored the same day for the same reason along with Fr. Jose M. Herreras SJ, a priest stationed in Corpus Christi Parish, who celebrated 60 years as a Jesuit. They were given plaques of recognition for their joyous perseverance in their religous vocation.
Fr. Mendez, a native of Alquizar, Province of Havana , Cuba, entered the Society of Jesus on August 22 ,1953, having a college degree in Agronomics. After four years of Novitiate and Humanities at El Calva rio House, he studied Philosophy in Alcala de Henares, Spain, and in the then Belgian Congo. In Africa he also studied Anthropology.
He went to Toronto, Canada, for the theological studies required for ordination to the priesthood.
He lived in the Dominican Republic for many years. He was a professor at two Universities, the Pedro Henriquez Urena in Santo Domingo and the recently founded University of La Vega. He also did parish work in the rural town of Cutupu, La Vega In the capital city, he was in charge of a CVX for college students.
He moved to the United States in 1975 and was first chaplain of the University of St. Louis, Missouri. Later he came to our Belen School to teach Philosophy and Theology. Here he also served as a counselor to the students.
After a few years as associate pastor in St. Timothy's Parish and as Spiritual director in the St. John Vianney Seminary, he returned to Belen, this time as a retired priest. We do not see much of him in the school, because his poor health does not allow him much activity. He lives in the Villa Javier House where he recieves many visitors who appreciate his gifts for spiritual guidance.
As retired Jesuits do, he has the apostleship of prayer as his main duty now. When declining health forces a Jesuit into retirement, he is expected to pray much for the needs of the world, the Society of Jesus , and the Church.

The Belen Jesuit Community suffered a severe blow last September: The loss of one of its dearest members, Brother Estevez. On September 14th, day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he lost his battle against leukemia.
He struggled with the ailment during seven months. Although he was getting worse and feeling miserable, he did not indulge in self pity, but always gave an edifying example of faith, patience and endurance.
When he got so weak that he had to give up working, he began to spend long hours in the chapel, preparing himself for the final encounter with his Creator and Redeemer.
Brother Estevez was born in Madruga, a Cuban town in the Province of Havana, in 1927. He became a Jesuit in 1948 and remained a faithful religious man of the Society of Jesus for 55 years, until his death.
Availability to a wide variety of missions was a striking characteristic of his personality and spirituality. It explains the number of pla ces in which he served as a Jesuit brother. His first mission took him to the Jesuit School of Sagua Ia Grande, Cuba. While still in the island country, he successively became a member of the Jesuit communities in charge of the "Colegio Dolores" in Santiago de Cuba and of the "St. Basil's Seminary" in El Cobre, a town famous for the beautiful shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba.
Out of obedience he had to leave his dear country in 1970, and headed toward the Dominican Republic, where he served mainly in the "Colegio Loyola," located in Santo Domingo, the capital city.
He had a special charisma in caring for the sick. That is why he volunteered to assume the undesirable task of tending to the needs of lepers. He did that during a few years in the leprosy sanatorium of Fontilles, Spain.
After a short period of time back in Santo Domingo, he took what was going to be the last mission of his life, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, Florida. He spent here the last twenty years of his earthly pilgrimage.
In our school every one was a witness of his dedication to his duties, mainly as an assistant in the bookstore and in the performance of many little tasks that are so important for the smooth development of life in the school. He was constantly supplying sodas to the machines and providing all necessary things for the chapel.
He was not a Jesuit priest, but a Jesuit brother. He did not have the Sacrament of Order, but the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. As most Jesuit Brothers do, he took care of the logical aspects of the apostolic mission of the Society of Jesus.
Last September 17th we bid farewell to Br. Estevez celebrating his funeral in the library. We prayed for his eternal happiness and we pray that he may obtain from God many blessings for all those who have to carry on the Belen School project.
