nother year. Another graduating class. Another nine months -- - - of Belen. What makes this year different from any other? The answer is nothing. Stu ents '.enter Belen with the attitude ' of, ''Oh man, not school again," but when it comes down to it, they follow through. What motivates them? What keeps them going? Students begin with certain goals, certain key elements that they want to accomplish, ·and throughout the year they work to fulfill their dreams. Filled with pride in their work, they seek to the courage to face any hardship. For 146 years of Jesuit teaching, since the first school opened in Havana in 1854, Belen has offered them many oppor.tunities. As Christianity celebrates its 2000th birthday, students strive to grow in their faith. They want to experience victory in all of their endeavors by succeeding in whatever they undertake. Let this book serve as a reminder of everything students have endured throughout the year to show PRIDE, demonstrate COURAGE , build FAITH, and achieve VICTORY.

Finally!!! Schools out, finals are done, no more papers, deadlines, or bells. It's summertime!

Summer gives students a time to relax. Yet, some see summer as an opportunity to earn some cash

"I work so I can have money to spend during the summer and for next year/' said senior Pedro Munilla, who worked in construction.

Others view summer as time to fulfill community service requirements.

"I love working with the kids in the Dominican Republic; it gives me a good feeling to see them happy/' said junior Alex Zuriarrain.

Athletes use summer to train for the upcoming school year.

"I workout and run everyday so I can be a good football player and be able to help my team/' said junior Alex Paret. The football team trains five days a week.

"Men for Others." Students hear their motto every day, but what does it really mean? Everyone is required to fulfill a 100 hour quota of service by graduation. Many surpass that in only one year. For some, service becomes a way of life.

"I went ot the Dominican Republic. It helped me appreciate what I have. It made me feel one with God/' said junior Eugene Ramirez.

Ramirez now heads up a proje-ct that takes students to an after-school program for children of migrant workers.

Dedication, service, and leadership. These are all words that describe Mr. Leopolda Nunez Executive Assistant Pr incipal. Throughout his 25 years here, Mr Nunez has been an integral part of Belen. "I was in awe when he had them days later, " said juan Pablo Broche. His character and ethics serve as an inspiration to those who know him. His dramatic lectures keep students alert and intere sted.

Father Marcelino Garcia SJ has been President of Belen for 16 years and principal for 8. Under his tenure, Be len has grown; the V section, cafeteria expansion, auditorium renovations, computer re source center, and gym are a few of the many innovations he has contributed. However, he takes no credit.

"It is a team effort between the faculty, teachers , and the board of advisors," he said. Frankie and Manny Larrieu

Why does Belen have so many Assistant Principals?

"We want to be available to all students," said Modern Languages chair and Assistant Principal Mrs.Beatriz jimenez.

Did you know that almost all of the Assistant Principals also teach?

The students get to know them as a teacher, and that allows for all of the Assistant Principals to better know the students. That makes Belen unique. The Assistant Principals, who are in charge of different departments, meet once a week to discuss what is going on in Belen.

"What most students don't know, rs that we have an open-door policy," said Mrs. jimenez.

We see them all the time. They are perhaps the most dedicated individuals at our school. But, just who are they? And even more important, why have they chosen a life dedicated exclusively to helping others?

Belen's jesuit priests range in profession from administrators, to teachers, and even spiritual counselors. Reasons for joining the order are just as diverse.

With a smile on his face, Fr. Jorge Sardina Sj gladly recalls that it was something growing in him since childhood. It was always a drive in that direction, always on his mind, which solidified into his life-long pursuit. For others it was more

of a life changing experience. For some it would in clude a call we may never receive. Many of us simply cannot understand the sacrifice.

"It is my vocation. I never regret it. It is a very beautiful life." It is what God wants of him, he added. "What does God want from you? That is

what we should ask ourselves," he explained.

Although jesuit history is noted by many distinguished men who have enriched e d u cat i o n a I o pportunities for countless students around the world, what is of concern to them most now is their very existence. jesuits, like other religious orders, are experiencing a steep decline in membership, leaving few behind to carry out their work.

"People are too used to the excesses of modern life," Fr . Sardina began. "It is more difficult to change direction after a life of sin."

Junior Honor Society is an orginization which recongnizes excellence· in academics and service to school and community. As an ongoing, yearly service to Belen, the society offers tutoring in all subjects grades 6-9.

In addition, NJHS sponsors Project Cradle at the University of Miami, providing service and fundraising projects on a monthly basis. They also handle projects such as a student exchange with Carrollton School, and plan additional activities during the year.

The NJHS is one of the many honor socities in Belen which include Quill& Scroll, Honor Society, the Junior and Senior Beta clubs and the National Honor Society.

"It's a way I can spend time with my friends and help out others," said senior Vice President of the National Honor Society Adrian Sanchez.

If everything goes as planned, Vincam will have produced 11 issues this year. That's almost one issue for each month except July. "Through hard work and dedication we are able to produce the quality of newspaper we have today," said Paul DiMuont, sports editor. To accomplish this, the crew has to deal with deadlines, layouts, and finding good story ideas. "I think it's very important to do Vincam because it informs tthe student body of the issues and current events that affect us all. It's the culmination of a month of hard work," said co editor in chief Andy Corral.

Speaking for those who can't speak for themselves; that's what Amnesty International is all about. Students and club moderator Mr. Patrick Collins meet once a month to plan the upcoming projects. So far this year the club has focused on political prisoners in East Timor, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Argentina.

The club aids people who have been imprisoned for their beliefs or ideas. "This club has been around for a while and with Mr. Collins' leadership, we have the power to influence many leaders," said junior Danny Ad an.

The club works in cooperation with Amnesty Clubs in other schools to augment the number of letters to the leaders of the countries, making their influence that much more.

They are hopefuls to reach state competition as a team, lead by Jimmy Pefia and Chris Zacarias, both of whom have been to state competition.

Pondering your next move?

The team gets together twice a week and puts in countless hours of strategical training to take on the next opponent. "This team is really changing the way people view the chess club," said jimmy Pena. This team brings excitement and a fresh look at chess, according to many members. Made up of young players, the team is looking forward to continued school support.

The B.A.S.E.S. club, which encompasses the Astronomy, Meteorology, Environmental, Microbiology, Junior High Astronomy, Junior High science, Physics, and Computer Science clubs is gaining popularity. President Daniel Rogue and Vice President Alexander Selem serve as club leaders. "I can't wait to see the outcome of the new technology being given to the club," said Selem.

"Our club isn't one of biggest, because we are only made up of the leaders from the other eight science clubs"said Vice , President Alexander Salem.

Both Rogue and Selem are trying to expand the levels of technology. The club members await the new science building that should go into construction in about a year, along with the Astronomy Lab which is also getting a technology upgrade including: computers, radars, and satellites. "I forsee our club to grow to new, larger dimensions. We had the privilege this year of receiving an office to conduct our club matters, something most other clubs want, showing that our club now has become a powerful club in the school," said Rogue.

BIasta day gives students and faculty the opportunity to join together in the fight against substance abuse. The club is headed by faculty member Mr. Ignacio Font, club president Jorge Anzardo and vice president Nick Torres. The schedule included a number of guest speakers such as alumnus Robert Riley Ill. A good friend of Riley's died in a car accident this past summer. His topic was the importance of wearing seatbelts. In the auditorium, Mr Leo Williams' junior speech and drama class also performed a skit about the dangers of alcohol. Mr. Jerry Garcia's senior theology class offered a prayer service in the chapel. In the patio students placed their sins, written on a piece of paper, on a cross symbolizing their promise to God to make amends.

Key Club has proven to be a club of distinction and great service to Belen and the community. Through work and sacrifice, the club has been distinguished as one of the best in the district. This coming year is no different.

"This year's group is one of the hardest working group of officers to come through this club," said advisor Mr. Rafael Ledesma.

The club's theme is working with children. One of their projects is working with children of migrant workers in an after school program, while also sending medical vans to administer immunization shots to children who still haven't recieved them. The Miami Bridge is the single service project, which is selected by the club according to the needs of the community. Key Clubbers interact with truant, runaway, and ungovernable children. When asked why they help, the usual response is, "For the greater glory of God."

Alot of credit is due Belen's student council, according to junior Billy Wood. Most students don' stop to notice all they have thanks, in large part, to them - improved school policies, senior shirts, among others. Student council takes on tasks such as planning, to detail, the course of events of Homecoming, culminating in Field Day. Another effort, yearly dances are organized and run by, almost exclusively, student council. And although past efforts have been successful, student council strives to perfect a n a lready g ood system.

"We want to keep dances exclusive to guys from Belen. We're also working on bringing in better Dj's, making a funner atmosphere, and finding more sources of money," said junior and student council member Alex Hernandez Student council is also working on bringing the school together. "We want to increase kids' pride in their school and its sports, bring in more people to the athletic events," added Hernandez Carlos Miranda

The Secrets to Success

How many sixth graders do you know who show of the qualities of leadership, faith, and courage? Well, this year's sixth grade class has many, but only two really stand out. Those two are Danny Hanlon and Mike Diaz de la Portilla.

''They are the smartest kids in the sixth grade,'' said Ernesto Ramirez.

''They are like walking encyclopedias,'' said Rodrigo Tejedor.

These guys are not only about grades; they try to be well rounded in all aspects of life.

''Those guys are really nice and easy to get along with," said Danny Nuiiez.

When asked why they think they were picked as the two guys who best show the qualities of courage, faith, and leadership both Mike Diaz de la Portilla and Danny Hanlon both agreed.

''Being yourself is the key to showing people who you really are. That is the secret."

"Friends

you can count on"

Good friends, responsible, someone you can rely on, and funny are some of the things that fellow classmates say about Michael Ortiz and Alex Castro.

Michael Ortiz participates in JH Football and J H Track and is an avid paintballer.

''I've been playing paintball for a few years now and I go as much as I go, but what I really enjoy is the strategy of the game, not getting hit.''

"He's really funny and is always in a good mood," said Jesus Moises.

Alex Castro plays two sports, Varsity Track and JV Football. At the same time, he maintains a GPA of 3.0. "He is very outgoing and knows how to have a good time,'' said Jason Machado.

"I'm privileged to have Alex and Michael as classmates and friends because they both stand up for what they believe, and are always there to help others,'' said Steven Pessoa.

A t the 8th Grade prom, everyone was dressed to impress. The dress code for guys consisted of stylish suits and wacky ties. The girls all looked wonderful with their nice dresses and some really incredible hairdos.

"The music was kickin' ," said Matt Maranges.

What made the prom better than all other parties was that everyone was just "busting out," going crazy, and dancing to all types of music. Victor Ruiz and Gabi Suarez even brought back some old break-dancing moves.

"No one was sitting down. Everyone was off their seats and dancing all night, which was what made the party so much fun," said Gabi Suarez.

But the party didn't stop there . After four hours of crazy partying, the party made its way to Jason Machado's house, which was a perfect ending to a perfect night.

I think I would be speaking for everyone when I say that Mrs. Teresita Campos really did a great job of organizing this very special

Pinned Four More Years!!!!

''Finally all those long nights of writing in my agenda, studying the Constitution, learning how to plot a point, and even writing those boring Spanish papers are over," said Juan Carlos Gutierrez.

The Eighth Grade Pin Ceremony is the last step before entering high school. All during middle school the teachers explain how important eighth grade is because it is the final year before their averages start counting. "Yeah, it is all true, but the teachers love to exaggerate on everything, saying how it isn't just a pin also how everything we do will count for tomorrow," said Luis Costa. "I think it is also a little strange that after teaching for so many years every veteran teacher only gets a pin, just like how we get a pin," said Ramon Carmona.

FRESHMEN SHINE

Pride, faith, courage and viaory, the ideals of men for others. Since day one, Belen instills these virtues. Among the freshmen, one of the finest students who exemplifies these traits is Michael Gonzalez.

''Mike is a great student, very confident, and an excellent athlete who is also very polite," said Mr. Thomas De Quesada, world history teacher.

''Mike embodies the spirit, confidence, and talent with the courtesy of a gentleman,'' said junior Felice Gorodo.

Another freshman who exemplifies these attributes is Alex Esteban.

''Alex is a great all around person. He is a great writer, extremely funny, crazy, and a good performer,'' said Mrs. Adriana Suarez, algebra teacher.

''Alex is a born leader. Once in seventh grade he started a petition, a very bold move for someone so young. He is a terrific aaor with an amazing sense of humor,'' said Mrs. Cristina Casero, newspaper adviser.

"Con permiso, pero esas cosas no se dicen!" That is what Mrs. Beatriz Jimenez told sophomore Thomas J ardon after he shouted obscenities at classmate Jay Suarez for merely sitting next to him during lunch. Jay apparently caught ]ardon on a bad day.

Despite the obvious temper, J ardon is considered to be one of the most distinguished gentlemen among all the "wise fools."

"He is very concerned about others and he is always looking out for what is best for the school. He is a true Man for Others," said Spanish teacher Mrs. Marta Vidal.

Faith is also very important to ]ardon.

"He is truly dedicated to the Church and the faith, even to the point that he has defended it in an argument against four atheists,'' explained Giovanni Kincade, ]ardon's best friend.

Leadership is definitely his most evident quality.

"I believe his maturity and intelligence make him a possible candidate for the student council presidency his senior year," said Mr. Thomas De Quesada, moderator of the Model United Nations club of which ]ardon is the president.

Aside from maintaining a grade point average of 4.3 and spending time with his sister and two brothers, he likes to play "Dungeons and Dragons," and loves to read. His plans for the future include attending Princeton where he would like to study medicine. Make sure you look for his name in bookstores everywhere because J ardon's short-term goal includes writing a societal critique called, The Bovine Comedy, along with his colleague and best friend, Giovanni Kincade.

·The Wolverine Football team made history this year with their consecutive winning season. The team beat Ransom, their first opponent, by scoring the most points in a regular season game in school history. Next, the team showed that

they could face up to the challenge by beating 6A Hialeah High, 25-18. "This game was scheduled t9 test our team; they lived up to that test," said Coach Richard Stuart.

The Wolverines' first disappointing loss came against Gulliver. "If we would've played the first half, we would've had a chance," said senior Luis Martinez. They bounced back and beat district opponents Curley and LaSalle to clinch the third playoff berth in school history.

The season came to an end with a loss to American Heritage in the first round of the Playoffs. "We played a tough game but couldn't hold on," said senior Thomas Pia.

Although the season had its disappointing moments, the Wolverines were very proud of their accomplishments and look forward to next year.

The Varsity Soccer team's high expectations faced some obstacles, which only brought the team closer. Winning was a given considering the only real competition, Pace, was shut out by the Wolverines 1-0. Then the team went into a slump losing three of its last five games and ending the season with a record of 12-8-0 overall finishing the district playoffs in second place. A 20 win over Curley in the first round was inspired by revenge, payback, and simply seeing who would be the best. After advancing to the district championship, they experienced a heart-wrenching loss in triple over-time game with plenty of penalty kicks.

In the first round at regionals, the Wolverines faced possibly their toughest rival, Gulliver. At the half it was 0-0. Belen played without starting midfielder Benji Chiriboga, left fullback Jeremiah White, sweeper Miguel Bolanos, and left halfback Victor Leon. Goalie Agustin Ramos joined in the fray despite a torn ACL. With ten minutes left, one of the Gulliver players made a goal from 35 yards out. Gulliver, the team who took the Wolverines out of contention for the championship, finished as state champs. This disappointment was offset by the spectacular play of two team members. Junior Marco Gonzalez led with 15 assists, making him a possible contender for All-Dade. Senior Jonathan Pagnussat was the leading scorer on the team with 36 goals. For his outstanding performance , Senior All-Star Game officials invited Pagnussat to participate.

The JV Soccer team had an impressive 8 and 5 record with 1 tie. This year they went up against teams that gave them hard times, but with hard work and practice Fabio Ortega led the team into a winning season. Among the top players on the team were Noe Burgos, Luis Angulo, Alex Cura, and the Klock brothers. The team's coach said next year the varsity team had much to look forward to in these future players.

The Water Polo season, as expressed by team member, Luis Hernandez, was, "a joke." Riddled with constant problems, it lacked in nearly every possible field, except maybe for untapped talent, proven perhaps by the fact that the team actually won two out of seven matches. Problems they faced included more then ....--------. anything, the fact that no one even knew the team existed, and as such, no one gave them the help needed to train. "All our stuff was sold and the pool rented out to the Braddock team," said Hernandez. This left the team with nothing. Many opponents didn't even show up for matches against them. For example Southwest cancelled three times, so the team never got to play them. In the end, Belen hadn't played enough matches to even qualify. for states . "Next year, we're going to practice harder, work harder, play harder. and hopefully, this time people will actually realize we DO exist, and that we can play," said Giancarlo Bertaina.

The Varsity baseball team's 2000 season was filled with its ups and downs. This rollercoaster ride was marked by the loss of senior pitcher J.C. Parets and head coach Mr. Eric Hanson. "We did the best we could given the situation. It's tough to lose a starting pitcher and a head coach and still have a winning season," said David Aguiar.

The team completed the season with 16 wins and 11 losses. One of the season high poin t s was a convincing win against La Salle. One game to remember was a district one against Ransom in which the Wolverines played but came up short in the last inning.

Next year's team shows promise, with the addition of sophomore Joaquin Sanchez who moved up from JV to replace the loss of J.C. Sanchez was able to win some tough games, promising a bright future.

The team had a winning season in lieu of some major set backs, which was a great accomplishment in itself.

The Freshman Baseball team had an outstanding year, after facing rival Key West and coming out with a win. They were led by the play of Alex Esteban and Javier Navarro who were the excellent performers. They led the team with stellar hitting and great defense finishing off the with a record of 12-6.

They were later paired up with the Junior Varsity Baseball team. Even though they didn't know what to expect next, the teams formed strong bonds and learned to darpend on one other.

The Varsity Track and Field team, with only three seniors, managed to finish undefeated in dual meets despite the relative inexperience of most of the team. They recorded upset wins against rival Gulliver and South Dade, securing their 14-0 season. They also always finished among the top seven schools at large invitationals such as the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair, University of Miami Greentree, Northwestern relays, and Angelini Relays. The team depended heavily on jorge MunozBustamante, who was favored to win the BOOm run in States, but due to an injury could not attend. jorge Palmerola led the team in points scored.

Jorge Munoz-Bustamante and Jorge Palmerola do what no one expected, take first and second place at the District Championship, defeating five other runners from Gulliver, their main rival.

Felipe Ojeda strides to qualify in the I00 meter run for the regional championship at Districts.

Each qualified for the regional championship meet in three open events. Miguel Ferrer finished sixth in the points standings and showed his all round versatility and dedication. Jonathan Salum came back from a serious ankle injury last year and went on to place fourth in the state championship for pole vault.

One of the season's highlights was the outstanding performance recorded by the 4 x 400 meter relay team. They set a new school record and went on to finish 9th at the State Championship meet. The team consisted of jorge Munoz-Bustamante, Alex Bedoya, jean Paul Chavez, Raymond Mendez and substitute Robert Zaldivar. The 4 x I00 meter relay team also set a new school record by placing in the County Youth Fair meet. The team was composed of Raymond Mendez, Alex Bedoya, Miguel Ferrer and Jean Paul Chavez.

Freshman Felipe Ojeda flies to another win at the Belen track. The team defeated Pace among other MiamiDade schools.

Jorge Palmerola starts the 4 x 800 meter relays at the Florida Relays in Gainesville. The team finished in 7th place.

The junior High Track team had a tough act to follow, last year's Miami-Dade County Championship. Unfortunately, the team was unable to participate at the County Meet. But that didn't dampen their spirits. They proved it by winning over St. Kevin at the Respect Life Meet, where their boys' scores were added from the Primary, junior Varsity, and Varsity Divisions. Thanks to eighth grader Michael Bad a's lonely point in the

JV, Belen was able to win that meet (Belen doesn't participate in the Primary Divi-

sion). Led by eighth graders Javier GardaTunon, Alvaro Bada, and Alex Castro, the team completed a successful season winning the All Catholic Conference and the Old Cutler Classic. Eighth grader Javier Garcia Tunon won five events. He won the top scorer award at the Old Cutler Classic. Abel Lera

The young volleyball team lead by senior jose Romero expected to have a depressing season until ending up 11-1. juniors Michael Forrest and jason Burrows brought great performance and experience to the team. FOUR!!! The team, led by seniors Greg Bel and Jose Jimenez, started the season with five straight wins Their first loss came at Deering Bay against Killian. After this upsetting loss, the team won three consecutive matches and went on to place fourth in the state tournament held in Melborne. Dreams of placing in Districts began to fade as they lost four straight to Gulliver, Key West, and Curley. "Even though we began to doubt ourselves, deep down inside we always new that anything was possible," said Bel. This attitude led the team to a 10-4 record and a second place finish in Districts.

The outlook for next year's Golf team is good, considering that there were only two seniors on the roster. "Next year will be a challenge, but we feel confident that we will do very well because we have such a young and experienced team," said next year's team captain J.P. Albert.

Domination is the key to success in any sport. In the case of both the Varsity and the junior High tennis teams, this is no exception. Both teams finished their seasons with winning records, Varsity 13-3, and JH 3-1. When asked what was different about this year's team from other years, Mr. Patrick Collins, coach, said, "I was impressed that most of the guys on the Varsity team were eighth graders." The highlight of the season for Varsity was that they were the District runner up, and the highlight of JH was beating their rivals Ransom. Leading both teams was Steven Pessoa who is a state ranked player. Most teammates believe he made the most outstanding contribution.

Family, friends, and traditions are only a few of the reasons Lourdes' students offered for joining the Varsity and JV cheerleading squads.

"I joined cheerleading because my brother has been in Belen for the past six years and it is like a second home to me," said freshman Nicole Roque. Though viewed by most fans as entertainment, most cheerleaders take their roles very seriously.

"I completely consider cheerleading a sport because of all the conditioning and training we do. It requires talent and you must be strong to tumble and have balance to fly. It is definitely a sport," said junior Stefanie Perez. Some members would like to see changes in the future.

"Next year, we should plan things with more time such as competition. We should also add new and more intriguing stunts," said sophomore Aileen Penate.
