Alas! We meet again. For a whole year I have been piecing together memories of this wonderful place. I have witnessed sixth graders overcome their fears as first-year Belen students, I have witnessed students do great things for the community, I have witnessed this school adapt to meet the demands of today' s technological world, and most of all I have witnessed the class of '99 step in as the last class of the millenium hoping to leave behind a legacy that they will cherish for years to come.
So here I am waiting for you to rustle through my pages, waiting for you to feast your eyez on me so I can take you back to the place you love!

Belen students have never had any problem when it comes to either service or just kicking back and partying. Whatever it may be, students always know when to turn on their school spirit, and show their love for Belen. Some like to spend their free time going to dances, others like to participate in the preparation and completion of a school-wide Mass. Those who choose to follow the school's motto spend much of their time doing community service for the poor, showing that they are truly ''Men for Others.'' Many spend memorable vacations away from their home, traveling to other countries and states, meeting people and learning new ways of life. No matter what students do in their own time, they always maintain all eyes on them as they demonstrate their Wolverine pride, carrying their spirit above and beyond graduation.

BEYOND BELEN
Every year the Belen Social Studies Department offers a summer trip to the Old World. This year was no exception. In previous years the trip consisted of countries such as England, France, Germany, and Italy. This year the group went to "Mother Russia." That's right Russia, a.k.a former Soviet Union, Fabrege Eggs, "The Iron Curtain," Red Square, Lenin's Tomb, and McDonald's.
Mr. Charles Cleveland, trip organizer, Mr. Patrick Collins, department chair, Mr. Eugene Zoller, eighth grade civics, and 29 others went on the trip. Even though communism has ended the repercussions were still very vivid.
"I feel bad for saying this, but the Russian people got the raw end of the deal with communism," said senior Johnny Telleria. The participants felt the journey was a success because it taught them to value their own democratic system. "There are so many differences that I was prepared for thanks to Mr. Zoller's workshops," said sophomore Alberto Manrara.

CELEBRATING 15 YEARS
F or 15 years Belen has invited boys and girls ages 4 to 15 to pa rticipate in seven weeks of recreation. Under the management of Athletic Director Carlos Barquin and former Belen math teacher Mrs. Miriam Cambo-Martinez , the summer camp has opened its doors to more than 25,000 kids. The camp directors hired 150 counselors to guide the ever-growing number of campers who participate every year.
" My counselors this year were great. They were very responsible and they really knew how to show the campers a good time,'' said eighth grader David Acosta.
At camp kids participated in basketball, soccer, dance, and arts & crafts. They also attended field trips to places such as the Miami Seaquarium and the Miami Ice Arena "My favorite field trip was to Thunderwheels because I love rollerskating especially with my friends,' ' said sixth grader Joey Can tens.

WHAT's NEw IN ScHOOL
''The Smartboard is very easy to work with, so any teacher can use it."
This year the student population grew to over a 1000. Belen entered the millenium with a new haircut policy which allowed students to shave as low as a 1.
''I don't want to push it. I'm satisfied, but I'd like it to be a little shorter,'' said freshman David Bouza.
Students are now required to wear cordovan or brown penny loafers. Smartboards, 70" computer screens, have been added to a few classrooms. Also, a greenhouse was installed near the pool.
''The Smartboard is a great new product that will facilitate teachers to have interactive teaching presentations,'' said Mrs. Carol A. Vila, Director of Technology.
Among some of the changes to come will be the availability of a computer in each classroom and a student arts building.
''I think that the technology being put into Belen will be very useful,'' said junior Nick Patino. ''I hope that the younger students will be able to appreciate it since my class won't be able to,'' he added.

SHOWING THE WORLD You CARE
In the world we live in today, a helping hand every once in a while is greatly appreciated. This is the reason why students at Belen must complete 100 hours of community service by the time they graduate. The awardwinning Key Club is an organization dedicated specifically to service. "Key Club is a very special organization. It does not limit itself to the boundaries of our community, instead it reaches out to many other parts of the world which are in desperate need of our help. It is also very rich in tradition,'' said Co-moderator Mrs. Aimee Busquet. While in high school she also belonged to Key Club. As part of the community service opportunities, Brother Gerry Garcia, twelfth-grade theology teacher, invites students to work Saturdays and Sundays at the Franciscan Farm. "Working at the Franciscan Farm is a humbling experience. Besides bringing me closer to God, it also brings me closer to my grandfather because he was a farmer in Cuba. Because of what I learn at the farm I can engage in a conversation in which my grandfather and I share common interests,'' said senior Gaby Gonzalez.
Other clubs which offer community service projects are Respect Life, The Altar Servers, SADD (Students Against Dangerous Decisions), and the National Junior and National Honor Societies. "I believe that community service is the key to feeling good about yourself. Personally, it brings me closer to God and to the community," said senior Danny Blanco.

Mass is a holy and spiritual ritual for Catholics. This year Belen had the pleasure of witnessing alumnus Francisco Javier Permuy SJ take his vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. This is the second step out of six needed to become a Jesuit.

The Altar Servers have been an active group within the school for three years. "I think that being an altar server is very important. We get to help out in the Mass and after Mass. We are also helping others in their time of need,'' said freshman altar server Johannes Quiles. Besides serving the Belen commun ity during regular school-wide Mass, altar servers have taken up other activities such as raising funds for the victims of Hurricane Mitch . yHow often do students get to make fun of their teachers without getting in trouble? Well, not too often. Only once a year seniors get to ridicule teachers and underclassmen. When can they do this? At the Senior Skit.
During Homecomng Week, the graduating class puts together an ensemble which pinpoints the amusing characteristics of some teachers and students. The seniors invited the student body as well as faculty to enjoy their production. ' ' I couldn't stop laughing during the skit. My favorite part was when they made fun of Mr. Ross (a sixth grade English teacher) and his King Arthur fantasies,'' said sixth grader Michael Stratos.
''Overall the Senior Skit was a big success,'' said director and script writer, senior Michael Marchant. Marchant also played the role of Mr. Jorge Martinez, tenth grade U. S. history teacher. Many felt his portrayal was dead on. ''Directing and writing the Senior Skit was hard work. I know I could not have done this without the help of my good friend Augusto Gaymer (senior assistant director) as well as the dedication of all the seniors who participated.''

"I can't wait till next year," said sophomore Alex Paret. That is the type of excitement and anticipation Field Day brings to many Belen students. After weeks and months of hard work every single day, the administration offers the students a time for fun in the sun.
"Field Day is cool because it gives us a break from all the school work we get,'' said junior Norberto Benitez.
It also serves as an outlet for the competitive juices that get stirred throughout the academic school year.
During Field Day homerooms compete against each other in a variety of events. The competitive nature of these events drives each homeroom to invent its own motto such as "9B is the place to be" or "llA all the way."

GAME
"Hey buddy, what's the score?" Well the second half is starting and Belen is down 28-6. Their chances are slim. That described the attitude of most of the fans who were in attendance that Halloween afternoon.
"We always get caught up in the rivalry with Gulliver,'' said senior Gerald Del Amo.
When the second half came around it appeared as if a whole new team had stepped on the field. The Wolverines rallied from behind opening the half with a great drive and continuing with stellar defensive and offensive performances the rest of the way.
''Never have I witnessed a victory so sweet and so deserving than this one," said senior Juan Carlos Rasco. Jorge Saladrigas

Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat! Sounds like something most kids say on a typical Halloween night, but October 31, 1998 was just the opposite. Not too many Belen students wore costumes or trick-or-treated; instead they were dancing the night away, dressing to kill, and enjoying a fabulous chicken and rice dinner. "It was a great night. Everybody was excited and lively thanks to the football team's come from behind win,'' said senior Alex Binelo.
Armando Castro (DJ Mandy), a former Belen student, was at the turntables playing the hits. The party was held at the Downtown Hyatt Regency where over 100 couples attended. "I kind of missed not being able to do the normal things on a Halloween night, but overall the dance was a huge success, the music was good, and I didn't regret giving up getting my candy for the night,'' said senior Steven Henriques.

OuT RuNNING THE COMPETITION
There are three sure things in Belen. Number 1- someone will always complain about the cafeteria, 2- Athletic Director Carlos Barquin will coach Cross Country, and 3- the Varsity Cross Country team will dominate their district. "I have been running Varsity Cross Country for the last three years and every race we show up to we have been seen the team to beat,'' said senior Salman Fatemian. Some of the big meets they attended included the UM Greentree Invitational, 2nd annual Walt Disney Invitational, and the Dade County Youth Fair meet. The team finished second, first, and fourth at those meets. Senior Eddie Acosta, six years on board, lead the pack. The team captured districts and regionals, placing fourth in states. ''I feel that even though the team placed fourth we will be a team to be feared of in the future,'' said junior Jorge Munoz-Bustamante.

Coaching for the team were Mr. Frankie Ruiz, Mr. Victor Arrieta, and Mr. Ernesto Diaz. During the season the team showed promise to become one of the top teams in its division. ''I will not be surprised if we win Dade County Youth Fair Invitational next year,'' said Coach Arrieta.

The junior high cross country team proved once again to be a dominant force in junior high sports in MiamiDade County. Coaching the team were Mr. Frankie Ruiz and Mr. Victor Arrieta.
The two biggest meets of the year were tough competition. The team placed second in the Dade County Youth Fair meet only missing first by a few points. In the last meet, the ACC Championship, the team captured first place. The team will continue their dominance in the future even though they are losing valuable eighth graders. "I will miss running JH, but I can't wait till I run Varsity next year with Barq," said eighth grader Alejandro Lucio.

"We played our hardest every game; we left everything we had on the field,'' said senior Emil Ric art.
The team began the season with four straight wins and then hit a plateau. They lost three consecutive games, one against state runner-up Monsignor Pace. The Wolverines, needing to get back on track, exploded on newcomer Coral Reef with a fourteen-point win. They won two out of the next three, ending with a record of 6-4.
This year's Homecoming game will always be remembered as ''The Comeback.'' The Wolverines came back from a 28-6 halftime deficit to win 35-28. ''This was the greatest game in Belen football history,'' said head coach Richard Stuart.
The '99 Wolverines had the distinction of being one of the few Belen teams to boast four top college football prospects: linebacker Vince Cartaya, fullback Eric Mauri, tailback Victor McMillian, and guard Jeff Lopez.

One of Belen's most popular sports is football, as evidenced by the Varsity, JV, and Junior High divisions. All together over a hundred students participate in one of the three levels.
The Junior Varsity football team's head coach Angel Aparicio expressed some optimism. ''This season we were faced with the toughest JV schedule I've ever seen even though we did not have the greatest of seasons. I am proud of their hard work and dedication.''
After the dust settled at the end of the season the JV record stood at 1-9.
On the other end of the spectrum, the junior high team ended the season undefeated with an 8-0 record. Head Coach Javier Argamasilla, an eighth grade theology teacher, led their victories. "I have never before seen players come together, and work together as well as these guys have. I am extremely confident that they will succeed just the same at both the JV and Varsity levels.''

The varsity basketball team had great ambitions for the 1999 season. This year served as a restructuring opportunity for the team and its new coach. Coach Ruben Marrero, former junior varsity coach, took charge of managing the team. ''This year is definitely a rebuilding year for us, but we have high hopes for this season and we believe that we will accomplish a lot,'' he said. The team consisted of fourteen players, eight of whom were seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and a freshman. Christian Hermida is the first freshman to start for a varsity basketball team in Belen history. ''The team, although having a mixture of players from each grade level, really worked hard together and played each game with incredible intensity," said senior Johnny Telleria. The team played a number of challenging opponents this year as well as in the district tournament.

The junior varsity basketball team had an excellent season this year with an overwhelming number of victories. The team defeated tough rivals such as Pace, St. Brendan, and Ace. Mr. Eddie Delgado, former football coach, showed his leadership qualities on the field and on the court. For a first-year head coach, he posted an outstanding season. The team was led by sophomores Jonathan Leyva, Oscar Peguero, and Javier Jacomino.
''The team really played well together and worked extremely hard to accomplish their goals,'' said Coach Delgado. Perhaps one of the best games the jv team played this year was against the Key West Conchs. After having a close first half against the Conchs, the Wolverines pulled away to win by almost 30 points.

He worked diligently to condition his players and improve their defense. The team, only in their third year, posted an impressive season. This year's varsity wrestling team had high hopes and expectations. They were the reigning threetime district champions. Although the majority of last year's team was lost to graduation, there are some up-and-coming prospects, such as Chris Alonso, Alex Castro, and Jason Machado
The transition from the previous year was facilitated by senior captain, and three-time state qualifier Oscar Zapata and senior Miguel Reyes. Zapata's savvy and know-how were instrumental in the success of this year's team. Reyes was the team's motivational leader after coming back from an injury. At the helm of the whole operation for the sixth straight year was head coach Fidel Albelo.
One underappreciated part of the program is the junior varsity division. These are the stars of tomorrow who worked hard and didn't get to shine in the spotlight. Some of the outstanding wrestlers on this squad were Andres Nunez, David Caballero, and Miles Rico

One of the most challenging sports in MiamiDade County is varsity soccer With the diverse culture of nationalities in the community, South Florida is a melting pot for talent. The Belen vars ity soccer team had a challenge of its own, facing one of the toughest districts in the county and overcoming the loss of seven seniors. Coach Pablo Taquechel and the assistant coach Armando Gatamorta returned for the season. The team opened with a 7-1-2 record, but things went badly when the team lost seven players due to injury throughout the season. To top it all off, the team lost in the first district game, for the second year in a row, in a heart-wrenching defeat to rival Pace. The team finished off the year 1911. ''In my eyes we did the best we could do considering our situatuion,'' said senior Jose Garrido. The remaining juniors and sophomores still look forward to the next season and will use this season has an inspiration. "Don't worry, we will be a team to reckon with next year,' ' said junior Danny "Zany" Espinosa.

KICK IT UP
This year's junior high and junior varsity soccer teams had very successful seasons The junior high team boasted a superb record of 7-2-2, and the junior varsity team had a record of 10-5-5. The reason for such improved records is the result of their dedication throughout the season according to many members. ''Coach worked us like dogs. We practiced for three hours five days a
week,'' said freshman Rueben Molinares. Their hard work really showed with big wins against Pace, Key West, and St. Brendan. ''I'm really going to miss this junior varsity squad. Throughout the season we united like a family. I hope I could be just as lucky next season on the varsity team,'' said junior Carlos Smith.

This year's jr. high volleyball team had a very exciting and successful season filled with many surprises. With only one returning player, the team was able to reach a record of 9 wins and ony 1 loss. One of the main components contributing to this season's accomplishments was "teamwork." With the players' dedication to the team and support for each other, they were able to finish the season as champions of their division, giving it the final touch by becoming champions of the 1998 AllCatholic Conference Tournament. The team truly appreaciated the aid of assistant coaches Mike Forrest, Alex Zurriarrain, and Rodrigo Tefel, for their dedication and help throughout the season.

To live in America everyone needs to know English. The Belen English department works toward teaching students to speak and write properly. Among the teachers in the English department are Mr. Rafael Ross, Mr. Leo Williams, Mr. Richard Signore, Mr. Tony Perez, Mr. Anthony Alexander, Mrs. Aimee Busquet, and Mrs. Vicky Minchener.
An important asset for the English department is the use of various media resources in their classes such as novels, videos, and group projects. Through the use of these resources, English teachers explain literary movements and the books that were produced during that time period. ''I love assigning projects and showing videos when I cover King Arthur. I do not want my students to just read the novel, I want them to experience it,'' said Mr. Rafael Ross.

INSTILLING LIFELONG VALUES
The Theology Department is one of the most influential departments in Belen. Its job is to help guide students through the obstacles they face in daily life. By instilling Christian values, theology teachers give students the tools through which to respond to the many challenges they will face.
The Theology Department has excellent teachers such as Mr. Javier Argamasilla, Fr. Eddie Alvarez, S.J., and Ms. Angie Fernandez who serve not only as teachers but as friends.
"It's really nice knowing I can count on my teacher to always be there for me," said junior Danny Bouza.
The Theology Department also leads many community service projects. For example, Fr. Student Council led a trip for SASC (Southern Association of Student Council) for the first time, they introduced a new system of advertising for school dances, they had one of the best turn outs for this year's Kickoff dance with over 2000 in attendance, but most of all they pleased the student body. ''I remember not doing well in math. Then one day before a test I stayed after school to see if Mr. Jose Roc a could help prepare me. He did and I received a 96% on my test. I never knew how much my teacher really cared for me as well as for everyone else in my class,'' said junior Jose Andion. Much like their students, faculty members practice the school motto, ''men for others.''

The society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, by definition are a Roman Catholic order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1534. Throughout history they have come to be known as great civil servants as well as excellent educators.
In Miami, since 1961, they have been regarded as promoters of the community, creators of the leaders of tomorrow, providing the essential tools to be "Men For Others."
''The Jesuits truly embody all that a Christian man should, and does, stand for in life,'' said senior Alejandro Binelo.
The fourteen members of the Society of Jesus who call Belen Jesuit home epitomize Christian ideals.

KING OF THE HILL
The Editor-in-Chief interviewed Principal Fr. Marcelino Garcia SJ:
Q: What are your future plans for Belen?
A: Technology 2000 will bring new Smartboards, construction of a science pavilion which will have laboratories and science facilities, an lgnation Center for the Arts, parking lots, bleachers, and sports facilities.
Q: What changes in technology will Belen witness in the future?
A: Of course, we are constantly reading and attend-
ing professional conferences so that we can best prepare our students to be productive members of today's society. We know the potential of Smartboards, and thus plan to equip every classroom with one. The use of laptops in every class is also a possibility. By upgrading technology and taking a genuine interest in the welfare of students , Fr. Marcelino and his staff demonstrate that they are ready for tomorrow.

THE RENAISSANCE MAN
His distinctive voice is synonymous with authority. ''He has a certain presence,'' said junior Andy Corral. Mr. Leopoldo Nunez, assistant principal for academics is an A.P. art history teacher, disciplinarian, and a eucharistic minister. Outside of school he is a member of Hermanos al Rescate, a humanitarian group. He is a generous person who has been an inte-
gral part in the development of the academic curriculum. His grade assemblies have helped struggling students wake up and get their act together when it comes to studying. ''He is a professional who takes his job seriously; and at sometimes is very humble and has a great sense of humor," said Belen alum Carlos Curbelo.

CLEANING UP THE HALLS
The Belen cafeteria and maintenance staff are a group of dedicated individuals who make Belen what it is today. The cafeteria staff is headed by Mr. Richard Moncada. They are in charge of preparing and serving lunch each day for about 1,000 students "I want to serve the best tasting food to each student. If they do not enjoy it, it is our
duty to improve the quality so that they all will love our food," said Mr. Moncada.
The maintenance staff is made up of ten individuals who work hard every day to ensure that Belen is clean and functioning properly. ''I arrive to school at 7:00 a .m. and I always see them working real hard,'' said junior Luis Martinez. Daniel Montenegro

The Eighth Grade Pin Ceremony is an induction ceremony where students graduate from junior high and go on to high school. This night marks a point of transition in every Belen student's life. Many feel a mixture of accomplishment and fear at not being able to hack it in high school.
''I'm kind of nervous about going into high school. I'm really not sure what to expect, but I know I'll be fine," said

Parents get a sense of pride in what their son has achieved.
"My parents were proud of me because it was a step further into my life,'' said Alex Cura.

This is where it counts. You're a big kid now so you have to do well. Colleges examine your academic performance from here on out. It's the beginning of your whole future. It's freshman year.
"It's a lot of pressure at times, but I have found ways to deal with it and keep up my grades. Overall, it's not bad. I have had plenty of fun this year," said Bruno de la Fuente. Bruno is a jv soccer player. Practice takes up most of his afternoon. When he gets home, he makes a few phone calls to his friends and then begins his homework.
Ninth grade is the year many begin to go out, make friends with people from other schools, and basically start a whole new social life. ''This year I have gone to more parties than ever before,'' said Eddy Bertran.
According to Chris Fleites, ''The trick is to find the right balance between going out and studying. If you learn how to manage your time, you will have no problem in ninth grade.''

Junior year is the year when freedom is literally at your fingertips. Jonathan Pagnussat, Alex Fernandez, and Chris Cleveland always had to depend on rides until their junior year, when they finally got their cars. ''The best thing about having a car is the fact that I have the freedom to go wherever I want,'' said Pagnussat. He drives a 1998 black Audi A4. Not too shabby. Alex Delgado started driving his navy 1992 Honda Accord only a few months ago. "The greatest thing about a car is that I don't have to depend on anybody for rides," he said. Alex Fernandez cruises around in a 1999 black Volkswagen Passat. His favorite thing about having a car is that it gives him a sense of responsibility. "I love maintaining my car, keeping it in good shape. I also love adding accessories. It' a great hobby," he added.

This year's Sophomore Formal was the time that all the tenth graders were able to just relax from the pressures of classes and kick back and let it loose. Accompanied by their dates, the sophomores got all dressed up and came to the transformed cafeteria and had the time of their lives.
"It was so much fun! I had a blast dancing with my date the whole night,'' said Orlando Castro.
It was thanks to the great effort of the parents and the sophomore teachers that this event took place and that the cafeteria was magically transformed into the party room that it was.

At this year's ring ceremony, seniors were able to continue the tradition of receiving their graduation rings during the final year as opposed to receiving it junior year as in other schools.
After a Mass led by Principal Father Marcelino Garcia SJ, the
seniors walked down the center aisle to receive their rings.
"I think that it's important to get the ring senior year because it truly shows our achievement, and adds more of an importance to the symbolism of our accomplishments,'' said senior David Marin.

JIMMINY CRICKET! IT's GRAD NITE
Grad Nite '99 could be classified by many seniors as one of the greatest experiences in their young adult life. They began the day by boarding buses and watching their favorite gangster movies while they drive up to Orlando. When they arrived to the Walt Disney World area, the first stop was Pleasure Island. This portion of the trip was highlighted by two clubs: BET SoundStage and The Mannequin. Senior Ruben Trujillo even impressed fellow graduates by winning a dance contest. The seniors then went on the second leg of their trip to the Magic Kingdom. In the crazy kingdom they found themselves watching the musical talents of Britney Spears and enjoying their favorite childhood rides like Peter Pan and the Haunted House. ''It was the coolest thing,'' said senior Jose Garrido. "Not only did I see Britney, but I also rode my favorite ride It's a Small World." One of the more entertaining events of the whole night was the Hip Hop party in Tommorow Land where many seniors were seen trying to make new friends. ''I wish I knew how to dance that way. I would have had more fun in Tommorow Land," said senior Juan Carlos Telleria. Erimar von der Osten
