ANEW START
Another year has passed and so many chages have become the reality within Belen. The Jesuit's values, traditions and goals which make up Belen's reputation of exellence in all its endevors, remain as an essential part in the lives of every student Belen arrived at a new plateau of distinction, this year, with the construction of the gym, a new curriculum, new teachers, new desiplinary codes and a dress uniform. Every change enhances the standards that have been set by so many years of tradition. This legacy fostered inumerable accoplishments of many who walked through the halls of Belen. It also molded numerous Silver Knight Nominees, All Dade Athletes and National Merit Scholars to be true ''Men for Others.'' The Year 199 5 was a year marked by change and additions to this institution we call Belen, and it was a year where friendship, education and faith stood forth as guides on this path toward New Begginings.

THE WAY

SANTO DOMINGO
Excerpts from a journal.

December 26, 1994
We are preparing for sleep at Cefasa, the obispeda on the outskirts of Santiago. We found the bathroom facilities pretty bad, and I realized that this is the last time we'll see running water or electricity for a while. I have a feeling that it's only a hint of what's to come.
December 27, 1994
Father Eddy woke us up by singing "Lamb of God." We all took showers in the extremly cold water. At mass, Father Eddy gave thanks for our trip and we prayed for safety and success. He compared God to an airplane, which comes down to Earth to pick up its passengers and carry them into heaven. God comes down to us through Christ.
We arrived at Y ague Arriba this afternoon. We're staying in a wooded house with a steel roof. There are holes but it's not too bad. Eric, ] orge, Ceide, Sergio and I went for a hike. The landscape is unbelivable. There is no flat land here
December 28, 1994
We walked from about 8:30am until noon. We visited two families and saw many houses along the way. Our first visit was to the home of Maria Rodriguez, who has had sixteen children. She is saving a doll for her youngest daughter. The second visit we made was to the home of Robenico's family. They two beds between ten people. The father, Benito, was working the land.
We are digging a foundation for a new school. The students only reach the fourth grade currently, and the second school will enable Gregorio, the leader, to ask the government for a second teacher so that they can reach the s 1xth grade
December 29,1994
This morning we set up a chain to transpon bricks from the place where they were piled to the construction site about 50 feet away. We finished working at four and went to the lake. My back began to hurt today. Many of us have blisters on our hands and I have one on each thumb. I'm starting to feel really sick. Tomorrow five of us will pour cement while the rest of us get road detail.
December 31, 1994
This morning we did road work and filled a huge gap in the road. We made a frame of branches, built a wall of bags of din, and filled it with din.
Tonight's mass is the last of the year. Ralf chose the Mathew 2 5 Gospel.
January 1, 1995
We visited Gregorio's house to ask him for a third mule. ] orge was shining a flashlight on the floor and the little girl was following it. She was running around, being happy. '' Kids are kids everywhere."
Gregorio has one of the better houses in the village. The whole bottom half is made of brick. He called it "media cuerpa."
This afternoon, we had a party for the local kids Pepe dressed up as a fairy and Willie played games with the kids and gave them prizes Later, the three Reyes Magos came and gave presents.
I was talking to Rudis. He said he didn't want us to leave and he asked me to smuggle him in my suitcase and to make sure they handled the suitcase carefully. Say, "Be careful, there are eggs in that bag. Soft eggs, the American kind." I felt really bad.

It is strange how this trip could be fun because of the different circumstances presented to us. I think that this trip is an example of how God works in mysterious ways.
It has been a brief nine days of our lives, but its an impact that I will feel forever.
It was a successful voyage to an unknown and where union, faith, and above all love and understanding ruled in our hearts to accoplish one thing: The work of our Lord ] esus Christ.
A special thanks to Alan Diaz for the use of his journal and photographs.

SWING
This year Fashion Show Luncheon, Swing Street, showcases music from yesterday and today that has made an impact. The music is powerful, upbeat and strong. These same adjectives can be used to describe our students and graduates who are committed young men and leaders. The Belen Graduate makes an impact on society, reflecting our motto, MEN FOR OTHERS.
This event, like all of our fundraising events, would not have been possible without the support and cooperation of the Parent's Club, the Parent Delegates, the parents, the faculty and last but certainly not least, the students. Our work makes it possible to continue to educate young Christian men in the Jesuit tradition of spiritual and academic excellence.

STREET
We thank all who have made this beautiful show possible. We are grateful to Ms. Teresita Miranda who was tireless in providing ideas, the guidance and inspiration to make this and future shows a success. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious. We welcome her into the Belen Community!
Congratulations and thanks to our wonderful student models and hosts who have taken time out of their busy schedules to take us to Swing Street!
Sincerely,
Ana Cantens and Carol Ann Vila

SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS AT BELEN A
Taste of Latin Pride
Booths, posters and people filled Belen's central patio and library December 1 for the school's own take on the Summit of the Americas. The Summit, which took place December 9-11 in Miami, was a gathering of 34 democratically-elected leaders of the Western Hemisphere. Its goal was to increase understanding between American nations and encourage cooperation on such issues as trade, human rights, and the environment.
During the school's one day "Summit," four seniors delivered an informative talk on the political and economical impact of the international assembly. "For three days," said Social Studies Chairperson Patrick Collins in his introductory speech, ''Miami will be the center of the world."
The evening portion of Belen's "Summit", attended by representatives from the consulates of five participating countries, started with a procession of flags. Dade County Manager J oaquin Avino delivered the keynote address, in which he outlined the changes that Dade County will experience as a result of the Summit. He described Miami as "the capitol of the Americas." He also praised Belen's initiative and encouraged the other schools to follow its example. "Avino later inaugurated the "Patios de las Americas" where expositions prepared by

each homeroom attempted to capture a bit of every country's cultural variety. Visitors had the opportunity to sample food and view artifacts from around the hemisphere. "All I did was eat the food" said eleventh grader Tony Ullivarri. "That was my dinner."
The evening program even included beauty pageant winners sporting the traditional dress of their native countries-plus folkloric dancers from Bolivia, Nicaragua, Mexico and Panama. W odd History teacher Orlando Gutierrez, a coordinator of the event, called it "part of a continent and culture that is coming together.'' One of the Summit's visitors was Ben A. Doorson, a member of the Consulate General of Suriname. "I am very glad to see different parts of the world (represented here)," he said.
President/Principal Fr. Marcelino Garcia was pleased with the Summit's outcome. "It was great," he said, "more than we had expected." According to Armando Rodriguez, Assistant Principal of Activities, the night was such a success that it may become an annual event. Senior Manny Carballea called it '' one small step toward a more culturally unified community in Miami."

FIELD DAY

PEP RALLIES
Pep Rallies in some schools are considered long and tiresome, but not at Belen. Belen's Pep Rallies are wild and crazy. The Belen crowds are hyper because of our exellent DJ and our exciting Belen Cheerleaders.
Students enjoy the festivities during the Pep Rallies and the athletes enjoy being exhaulted by the entire student body. Senior Gatson Lacayo said ''When I am at the Pep Rally for an upcoming game, I feel invincible.''
Pep Rallies are a time to let out all the pressures from school and relax having a · good time. This year's Pep Rallies were filled with Belen spirit. Pep Rallies can be summed up by sophomore Marcus Macau ''We enjoy screaming and yelling after school, it is a great way to relieve the tensions of school and to show our support toward Belen's teams." As senior Jose Caraballo stated "I attend Belen's PepRallies because it is the thing I love the most at school, Belen pride.'' Lets show our Wolverine pride.

WORKING FOR OTHERS
A new look at helping the community
For years Belen's service to the community has centered around the work done by Key Club with projects like aiding the victims of Hurricane Andrew and volunteering at Kendal Medical Center in order to provide some medical aid for Santo Domingo. In recent years Father Eduardo Alvarez, S.J. and students planned occasional class trips to serve the community. However, this year, the Belen administration decided to take a different approach towards helping others in need. Father Marcelino Garcia, S.J. appointed Pedro A. Hernandez to head this new community service program which aims at each student from grades 9 to 12. Every student is required to perform a total of 20 hours of community service for the entire school year, which is devided into 10 hours per semester. The great majority of these projects are done in conjunction with Key Club, although students may choose an alternative method. The major difference between this year's community service program and that of last year is that it is now done on an individual basis. Since some other public high schools around Dade County had initiated their own community service requirements, the need for improving Belen's program became evident. "So many other schools were getting envolved (in serving), colleges and universities, as well as scholardships were placing more emphasis in community service,'' says Pedro Hernandez.

Another aspect of the community service program is that it is aimed at dealing directly with people. Senior Victor Arrieta prefers this over cleaning up a park: ''Serving people directly is done more from the heart. When serving others, you are serving Christ." Sophomore Ivan Santa-Cruz says, "Before, they would take an entire class to clean up an area destroyed by Hurricane Andrew, which was nice, but actually seeing the people who need help makes me feel so much more pleased.''

BELEN INSPECTS
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The Close Up Seminar (February 12-18, 1995)
in Washington, D. C., coincided with what may someday be called a historic changeover in Congress from Democratic to Republican majorities. Father Marcelino Garcia and Civics instructor Eugene Zoller led two dozen Belen juniors and seniors into the heart of this upheaval. The intellectual challenge of new friends from Iowa, Arkansas and Georgia (many of the female persuasion, more than made up for the physical challenge of below-zero wind chill and real snow ("I thought Mr. Collins was just kidding us about warm clothes.'')
Close Up includes a percentage of what you could do by yourself (if you knew the address, hours and significance of every place worth seeing). It is full of interesting sites you never realized were there (like Robert Berk' s humungous bust of Einstein hidden by shrubbery across the street from Maya Lin's Vietnam Memorial, and Gallaudet College -a university for the deaf, sorry, the hearing-impaired). We didn't just see these places; the Close Up staff instructors made sure we discussed their importance to America.
Close Up gets you into meetings that tourist normally do not manage. We listened and talked to an Assistant Secretary of State (Eddie Gomez challenged her views on Nicaragua). We met with several Congressional aides, an Assistant US Attorney, a network political reporter, and a group of military officers at the Pentagon.
Most Close Up participants get a chance to meet with their representatives in Congress. We spoke with Lincoln Diaz- Balart, and then watched him at work on the Rules Committee and, later on the House floor, managing a debate.
We spent a lot of time on buses, talked a lot, ate well, and roamed about literally dozens of famous and interesting places. There was even a day to ourselves, to get or return to places of personal interest. That morning Father Marcelino led all of us across the Potomac River and through neighborhood streets to the Georgetown University campus. We passed the parish church that John F. Kennedy attended and then split in eight different directions. Some went to Arlington Cementery, some to the FBI, some to a Guerra-arranged tour of the White House West Wing.
] orge Sanchez and Charlie Fernandez- Perez explored three religious shires that day, using the bus and subway system to reach the enormous National Cathedral (Episcopal). There they watched President Clinton depart from a memorial service for Arkansas Senator William Fulbright. Sanchez and Perez continued on to Washington's Islamic Center, where an Egyptian guide explained the furnishings and rituals of that mosque. Finally, they crossed town to the magnificent National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (on the campus of Catholic University of America). Imagine a chapel for every title of Our Lady you have ever heard; that gives you a general idea of the National Shrine's interior. There is even a Virgin of Cobre, donated by the Cuban-American Catholics of South Florida.
The week ended witha last morning on the Mall. Extra time to hit parts of the Smithsonian we had missed, and a mandatory but unforgettable visit to the Holocaust Museum.
We returned physically exhausted and mentally charged. Close Up was agreat week of learning that lived up to everything that Mr. Collins had promised.

THE GYM IS COM ING
Gym Construction No Myth
You've heard the myth. You may have sold the wrapping paper. After years of waiting phase one of the gym construction began August 12. "Work has gone pretty smoothly. We're just trying to get the job done as fast as possible so you guys can start using it,'' says Juan McDonald, a construction worker.
When phase one is complete, the gym will look as though it were finished but actually, it will only be a shell of the building. Inside, the only area open for use will be the locker rooms and bathrooms. Phase two will follow, with the addition of such details as ceramic tiling and toilets. The final stage will complete major aspects like connecting the school and the gym through a second floor walkway and adding a wood floor for the basketball courts.
''We have enough money to begin construction but not enough to complete it,'' said Assistant Principal for Student Activities Armando Rodriguez. Since 1990 Belen has been collecting funds through wrapping paper sales and donations from alumni, friends and even large corporations such as Coca-Cola who donated $200,000 "If we get the money needed before January, then the gym will be finished by May," President/Principal Marcelino Garcia said. "If not, we will have to stop until we gather enough funds, but then it will cost more to start up again." Athletic Director Carlos

Barquin, an overseer of the project, explained, "Although the school has accumulated $800,000, it still needs approximately $400,000 to complete the project."
The gym will have new locker rooms, so the current locker room may again be used as a senior lounge. The new building will also feature a projection room, a "state of the art" weight room, a laundry room, a health and rehabilitation center and wrestling facilities. The new coaches' office will have windows overlooking the first floor and could double as VIP seats at the basketball games. The old coaches' office will join with the student store into an extended book store. In previous years, the varsity basketball team has had to practice on the school's outdoor courts and play its home games, not really at home, but at Florida International University's gym. With the Belen Gymnasium complete the team will have two practicing courts, and one playing court with bleachers that will accommodate up to 960 people.
''The gym will create an atmosphere of school unity, a place we can all call home," said Coach Eric Hansen, "the next thing we need is a marching band. by Robbie Guerra

BELEN IN EUROPE
In the year 1994, Belen has gone on a few exciting trips to Europe. The main concern of these trips was to experience ftrst-hand what we had already learned in history, geography, or art classes. Belen had two trips to Spain and these were organized by Ms. Beatriz Jimenez (for one trip) and Ms. Vidal, Ms. Casero, Ms. Leon and Father Cala (for the other). Another trip to Europe was a trip which covered Central Europe and which was planned by Mr. Cleveland and Ms. M. Hernandez.
The trip to Europe with Mr. Cleveland, Ms. Hernandez and fourteen Belen students Southern Germany, lnnsbruck m Austria, Venice and Verona in Italy and Lucerne in Switzerland.
March 31st was the day our plane left to Germany. We spent four days in Germany. Those four days included the two medival towns of Rothenburg and Heidelberg (and a short stop to another medival town called Freiburg and to Germany's Black Forrest): These were clean quite towns full of typical medival houses, nice people and beautiful flowers. In Germany, we also went to the capital of Bavaria, Munich. In Munich ' we saw many sites like the Glockenspiel, the Hofbrauhaus, the cathedral (where we listened to part of Easter Sunday mass}, the two city halls, the Olimpic Stadium, the BMW building, etc. Near we also saw two famous places whtch demonstrate the beautiful and horrible sides of Germany: Neuschwanstein Casde and Dachau. Neuschwanstein ia a beautiful casde built in the Bavarian mountains near Munich. The casde of Disney World was modeled after this one. It was really spectacular! Dachau was Germany's ftrst concentration camp and we were able to go inside and learn about the Holocaust in a real camp.
Leaving Germany, we went to Innsbrock in Austria where we spent a few hours. Over there we enjoyed the beauAlps and the Winter Olympic Stadium. After Innsbruck we left to Venice (where we spent one day) and later to Verona (for a few Hours). In Venice, we
saw the Basilica of Saint Mark where the Gospel writer is buried and which is an incredible Byzantine church Saint Mark's Square, the Grand Canal aVe- ' glass shop (one of the things Ven1Ce 1s famous for is the hand blown glass), and the Dages' Palace which was where Venice was ruled by in older times. Venice was great because after our guided tour, we had around three hours to explore the city. We went to street markets, restaurants and other shops. We spent a very short time in Verona where we saw an ancient Roman amphitheater and the house of the Capulet family (a medival family of Verona) where we fmd the balcony believed to be Juliet's.
From Italy, we went to the Germanspeaking part of Switzerland where we two days. Our bus ride through Swttzerland was beautiful because we could see snow covered Alps and Lake Lucerne in the middle. Lucerne was a spectacular city where we enjoyed a cable-cart ride to the very top of Mount Pilatus, we went to a typical Swiss dinner with Swiss yodeling and music, an a tour of the spectacular, spot-less, and frienly
city of Lucrene. From Lucerne, we went to the northern part of Switzerland to the Rhine Falls (the largest waterfall in Europe). Mter seeing the impressive Rhine we went back to Germany, to Hetdelberg and then to the airport in Frankfurt.
Our trip to Europe was a real success. Everything turned out great, everyone learned and had fun together, and it was a new experience (it even snowed lighdy several times). We were exposed to the German, the Swiss, the Italian and little of the Austrian cultures and languages. Our bus had a group from Canada who spoke English and another who spoke French; therefore, we were also exposed to English and French Canadians. The people these countries were generally helpful or nice and the guided tours were very thorough and interesting. Belen is doing a great job in offering these trips to Europe which teach us history, art, culture, language, geography and more through ftrst-hand experience and fun. by Charlie Fernandez-Perez

ACADEMICS
It's the bottom line. What we come to school for, a solid academic preparation that will pave the way to a life of success. From the time we sit down to take the school's rigorous entrance exam, you know it won't be an easy task to walk out with the prestigious Belen diploma.
The best thing we can have at our disposal during these learning years is a wide range of choices to determine where our strengths lie. We are offered basic courses that give us a strong, well rounded education as well as electives that allow us to look deeper into our particular interests. In other words, Belen is a college prep school
which is designed to give us the power to take on the competitive atmosphere which we will be dealing with, not only in college, but throughout our lives.
All of us at Belen are working hard toward our goals. With the Faculty and Administration putting all their talents together, we achieve what sometimes seems impossible. It is the education that we are offered, that allows us to learn about ourselves, and to experience the Power!
Starting from the time you begin elementary school until you finish your education, academics is probably most important in what you want to achieve. Belen gives us the opportunity to make the best of our education by making us study hard and sweating it out until we achieve our goals.

FIGURE IT OUT

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Most Belen students who have had the honor of passing through Rafael Fernandez's seventh grade class have come out with a better look at the immense and extremely complicated world of Science. Through the years, the Scince Department has introduced the various forms of science to the young and eager students here at Belen. With the help of extensive labratory work ?.nd plenty of experiments, the students learn to appreciate and enjoy the wonders of the natural world. As Mr.Frank Pichardo stated, '' My basic Goal here at Belen is to help my Students discover the joys of working in the Sciences.''
The Belen curriculum offers subjects

in science which vary from Earth Sciences to Biology, and from Chemistry to Physics. Junior Danny Alonso, " When I leave Mr. Pichardo's Six period class, I defmitely feel enlightened.
Mr. Pedro Hernandez and Ms. Miriam Hernandez form a dynamic duo when teaching biology to their amazed students. As senior Freddy Granda! puts it, ''What you don't cover in six or seventh grade is going get covered later on . There are no areas that you just don't get to."
Belen Science department prepares us for real collegiate experience in Science. They Make sure of it!
MODERN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT
Belen sends of its students into the world with one valuable weapon that always puts them ahead of there competition: a fluency in at least two languages. When this school was established, among its many goals was the desire to instill and mantain in the students an appreciation for their Latin heritage. This appreciation has been brought about not only through classes dealing with spanish gramar and vocabulary in the lower grades, but also through teaching spanish and Latin American literature, history, and culture in the upper levels.
In this manner, as Fr. Pedro Cartaya SJ, spanish teacher, aptly explains,

''Students are not only bilingual they become bicultural.''
The departments success stories are many. Every year, in the spanish creative writting competition of the Dade County Youth Fair, more students from Belen win special awards than from any other school. Students in the A.P Spanish Literature class have a very impressive 85% rate of scoring 4 or 5 on the nationwide exam.An annual Modern Language Fair, culminates in a literary competition in May .In this manner, this school will keep abreast of the changes that thrust miami into the ranks of international cities.

Top: Mrs. Cartaya grading some papers.
Left: Mrs. Ortega feeling happy.
Bottom: Mrs. Arriaga pondering a question.
No longer A,B,C's or Dr, Seuss, now were talking American, British, and World Literature. In the 9th grade students are introduced to Language Arts, which helps improve grammer and writing skills. The 1Oth grade curriculum consists of American Literature taught by Lourdes Salas. In the eleventh grade, which is considered by many as the hardest year, students learn British Literature. In the fmal year of high school, students are taught W odd Literature by the head of the English Department, Mrs. Sylvia Hernandez.

Social Studies have always been a matter of pride and joy. With a well thought-out plan, the students get a comprehensive view of the world and the government of this country. This regimen consists of Geography , Civics, World History, American History, United States Government, and Latin American History.

THEOLOGY
The spiritual growth of our students is considered a top priority by the teachers in the Theology Department. The department is the most involved within the school including afterschool activities; for this year, the activities were endless in number. Anyone trying to get in touch with their spiritual side, or wishing for a closer relationship with God can attend one of the retreats or E. T .C.'s (Encounter Towards Christ) in which our Juniors and Seniors, together in a joint-venture with many students from LaSalle High School, set off to fmd the true meaning of Ottist. The incredible part of these retreats is that these Juniors and Seniors seek out the experience by themselves.

Service to others is the top value taught by the Theology Department. Besides the mandatory 20 hours a year of community service that all Belen students must complete, there are trips to · Santo Domingo, in which our students are involved in construction projects for the poor.
There has always been great cooperation from the teachers in other departments with the Campus Ministry events. As opposed to other schools, Belen students are allowed to miss class time to attend these events, as long as they make up the work. This great cooperation is due to the importance of spiritual growth of every Belen student.

HUMANITIES
Do you know the changes that occured in the Hutnanities Departtnent this year?
''What class is this for?'', was the popular question as tenth graders bought their books for the 1994-1995 year. The unfamiliar items were drawing pads, vine charcoal, graphite sticks and a kneaded eraser (a popular toy in other classes). These tools became familiar to students within a new art class. The course is entitled ART, thaught by Mr. Font and it is mandatory for every tenth grader.
About halfway through the year, a new Chairperson for the Humanities Department replaced Mr. Leopolda Nunez. "Ms. Marie-Jean Miyar will be an enthusiastic chairperson . I look forward to working with her,'' said Mr. Font.

Only Joseph and Tony returned from the previous team's pitching staff.
The team started off with convincing wins against Marathon, Curley, and Miami Country Day, but could not match up against the likes of Westminster, Pace or Key West as each swept their respective series.

STUDENT COUNCIL
This years student council succesfully completed every task it undertook. The hard work of the student council, especially that of the seniors, made it possible for all the achievements this year. Seniors Hector Garcia and Eric Muelle facilitated the process of legislating and organizing student activities. From Field Day to the sixth grade lock-in, every activity was outstanding.
The student council made it possible for Belen to reach every single fund raising goal set this year, a feat never before accomplished. This years Dances broke every single Belen record, and they were by far the Best. The execution and determination of this student council paved the way for next years group.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The National Honor Society is dedicated to leadership, character, academic achievement, and service. The elected officers for the 1994-1995 academic year were as follows: Gaston Lacayo, President; Jorge Pupo, Vice President; Eddie Placer, Secretary; and Eddie Gonzalez, Treasurer. Forty new members were inducted to the National Honor Society this year during a ceremony in the Central Patio on March 22, bringing the total membership to 88.
NHS dedicated the year to helping the library. They had bake sales and other fundraising activities and donated the proceeds to the library to help pay for Cotemporary Literary Criticism, a set of reference books to aid our students with their research assignments. A group of NHS students, under the leadership of Sophomore Ahmed Riesgo, helped Mrs. Marta Alday, our librarian, prepare for the used book sale.
In addition, NHS has attended district meetings which are held once a month on Saturday mornings at different high schools in the area. After the meetings, our students participate in the Brain Brawl and often came in first or second place.

NATIONAL BETA
The Senior National Beta Club worked very diligently under the guidance of advisor Lourdes Salas, and under the leadership of president Alex Castellanos.
The club undertook many service activities, including two food drives and a clothes drive, to aid migrant workers that attend the Church of the Sacred Heart in Homestead.
On Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter many homes were filled with happiness due to the selflessness of the club members and the generosity of the Belen Community

A. L. P. H. A.

When was the last time you went to a theater, a museum, performed in front of an audience, worked on a painting, or worked in a darkroom? Have you been involved in any of the .Arts? When a student joins A.L.P .H.A. the possibilities for exposure to the .Arts are endless.
A.L.P.H.A. members attended the theater, the opera, lectures, forensics competitions, art workshops, photo field trips, movies, an animation workshop (at Disney World) and more.

There were many first for the A.L.P.H.A. Oub this year. The club rented the entire Caruse1 Theater and the Belen Community enjoyed, the play, "Mirando al Tendido" as a family. The night of the A.L.P.H.A. Talent Show and Awards Ceremony Leo WiJJiams gave an inaedible performance. The Belen Art Show was available for viewing during intermision. The Talent Show and Awards Ceremony was the perfect closure to a great year for the club.
•'With the students that are returning next year, I expect the club will continue to be a success.'' said Ignacio Font, club photo monitor.

SPANISH HONOR SOC IETY
This prestigious club was founded in 1983 as the Jose Rubinos Chapter of the Spanish National Honor Society. Its club moderator is the dedicated Mrs. Beatrice Jimenez who also leads the Modern Languages Department. The club members from the tenth grade and up, must meet various qualifications, such as having an A average in Spanish and receiving a special teacher recommendation, before they may enter the organization.
The prestigious Spanish National Honor Society is not only a club one should feel proud to belong to but is also an organization which prides itself in the humble service it provides to others.
ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB

The Enviromental Club, led by enviromental super hero, Eduardo Placer had another successful year in 1994-95. with Enviromental Club moderator, Ms. Miriam Hernandez, Eddie and his environmental underlings had beach clean-ups and began an extensive aluminum can recycling program.
This >;ear's Enviromental Awareness week was also a success. Many posters informing the student body about environmental problems were posted throughout the school. During that week teachers related thier classes to the environment.
The Environmental Club has done much good for Belen. It has made the area much cleaner and has taught many students the power of teamwork and determination.

S. A. M. E.
S.A.M.E stands for "Student Awareness of Multicultural Education.'' This clubs main goal is to help individuals and make students aware of cultures other than their own.
S.A.M.E. tries to reach this goal by a number of small but educational activities. For the past two years, the club has had a field trip to the Jewish Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach. Another activity is the showing of a foreign film.
Through these activities, S.A.M.E. tries to bring all cultures toghether in peace.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Amnesty International is a well reknown, worldwide organization whose sole purpose is to stop humanitary offenses against any individual because of a political or economic situation. The Amnesty International club at Belen has been working hard all year, writing letters to multiple heads of state in protest of certain inhumane or unclear situations occuring in that state. "Basically, we write letters when we find out that someone has been kidnapped or disappeared because he or she was making a political statement or helping the poor, or something to that affect-our main weapon is our pen,'' said the clubs Senior Treasurer Jorge Pupa.
Amnesty International is a small, yet very important club at Belen which belongs to an organization that span the globe. "There are no drawbacks to belonging to Amnesty, only rewards-the rewards come when you hear that someone has been released and you wonder whether Amnesty International (worldwide) had to do with it; I usually like to think so," said Club Pres. Omar Riaz. Ultimately Amnesty International is a club whose sole purpose is for the benefit of those being treated unjustly around the world.

MATH CL
The Math Club is a new and exciting approach to learning about Math and people at the same time. The Math consists of an elite group of indiduals in the eighth grade who happen to be mathematical geniuses. These math scholars donate their time to helping out individuals who lack skills in math and may be in danger of failing. This allows the members to serve those who are close to them causing learning, interaction, and service all at once.

The Chess Club was originally formed as a small club, intended for the entertainment of the lower grades. Since then, the club has expanded thier horizons to include team competitions at county, state, and national level. The team, consisting mostly of underclassmen, who have astonished their opponents to end up with several great seasons. Their outstanding achievement in competition cannot be attributed to the players alone, but to their school moderator, Mr. Eugene Zoller.

FORENSICS CLU B
It could be said that the Forensics club this year was very prosperous. They competed in many tournaments and were extremely successful.
Forensics is a club in which you compete based on how well you can speak and not based on how well you can act due to the fact that you stand on your own two feet and cannot move. The scoring is based on your vocal variety, pronunciation, and enunciation.
This year the club achieved wonders with the guidance of Mr. Williams. Manuel Carballea received a first place award, Robert Garcia Tunon and Julio Sera recieved second place awards. However, these achievements, as expressed by every member are only a stepping stone in the future success of the club.

C. E. - L. A. C.
Centro de Estudio De Latino America y del Caribe, otherwise known as CELAC, is the Latin American club of Belen. It's main purpose is to high ten student awareness of issues that directly or indirectly influence the nations of South or Central America. This year the clubs most important project involved the creation of a summit of the Americas at Belen. The project was a precursor to the Summit of the Americas at Miami, where President Bill Clinton and numerous other Presidents from countries in Central and South America met to discuss pending issues and possible situations. The ''Summit at Belen'' ran two days. During the first day the entire student body was given a presentation highlighting the upcoming Summit at Miami and it 's political and economical importance. The second day was marked by an evening presentation where the foods and cultures of every Latin American country and the United States were gloriously displayed. The entire summit was a successful event. CELAC is definitely an important organization that aim to increase awareness concerning the current situations of countries in Latin America in the hopes of bringing about positive changes.

VINCAM
Sitting, sleeping, taking notes, while the teacher tries to pound useless information into your head. W airing what seems an eternity for the bell to ring so you can methodically walk to your next class. Another typical day, in your typical classes for the typical student. Typical, that is, unless your fortunate enough to take Journalism.
''] ournalism is not just your average class'' says junior Alex Riveras, a staff writer for Vincam. This seems to be the consensus opinion among the members of the class. Why isn't it your average class? "I think it has to do with the way Mrs. Casero places her trust in us that we'll get Vincam out on time with quality stories and art,'' says staff artist Jose Flores. ·
''I teach students to take the initiative, because if the students don't do the work no one will do it. I'm not going to do it," states class advisor Mrs. Casero.
Not only does Journalism give students a break from the everyday grind and pressure of ''normal'' classes, it offers the students a chance to provide information, vent frustrations, and give well deserved praise.
The thing I find the most important about Vincam,is the ability to show, or inform, students about things they really don't know about, or otherwise not know about, if it wasn't for Vincam.'' said ] orge Sanchez staff writer.

YEARBOOK
As last years juniors received their applications for electives, they glanced at Year book Production and said ''Yes, this is what I need to make my senior year a breeze.'' However, this year would be very different, and much more difficult than the past. The yearbook class had to deal with the unfortunate departure of Mr. Holland as yearbook adviser while halfway through the school year.
This left the class in major confusion, sorrow, and despair. "Noone thought the yearbook could be done, but I had faith in everybody from start to finish,'' says Omar Travieso, yearbook editor. With the help of veterans Sylvia Hernandez (chairperson of the English Department), Christina Casero (Vincam adviser), and Ignacio Font (art teacher) the yearbook class was willing to accept and accomplish the task at hand.
Though it seemed almost impossible to finish the book, due to all the changes, the yearbook class stuck toghether through thick and thin. Luis Moreno said, ''We had some real tough times, but we pulled through them like the team that we are.''

One Of The Leaders
Gabriel Gonzalez, an eigth grade student at Belen has been a great impact on the lives of all his eigth grade peers. ''I honestly think that Gabby is a great leader; that is why he is so succesful in his accomplishments.'' says ].C. Alonso. A well educated student with a 3. 0 grade point average, Gabby tries to reach out to what the future holds for him. ''I take time in what I do, that is why I personally think I am succesful." he says. He considers himself to be very determined in his studies, as well as to his extracurricular activities. Gaby has been part of Belen's outstanding junior high baseball team for the past three
years. Being recognized, in the fields of Belen, as a starter for the Wolverines , has made him be what he always dreamed to be, a leader.
''I think he has got a lot of potential and spirit. He is one of our b est players,'' says Coach Hansen. He is also involved in the Cross Country team as a runner, and is hoping to be part of the J .H. Volleyball team. SURF'S UP!
Freshmen year is a year of new beginnings and a year which the students who experience it will never forget. It is the beginning of their journey through high school, the beginning of many new and unique experiences which tend to affect the lives of each and every freshman that walks through the hallowed halls of Belen. Freshmen year will bring many joys and many milestones will be achieved, but Freshmen year will also have its share of concerns, pressures, and obstacles . Many discover different oudets or escapes to this world of distress although, many times, these oudets may not be the best thing for oneself. However, die Freshmen class of 1995 seem to have found a common ''escape' ' , one that entails a certain degree of physical danger but provides a rush apparendy better than any other alternate method of escape: surfing.
"Surfing is the best! When I surf, I forget all of those school things that worry me so much, and all that I think about is the waves," says J avi Franco. Surfmg has become the trend for this year's Freshmen class. "I've been surfing for about three years and I still get the same rush that I did the ftrst day I did it,'' says Frank Batista. There's an ever present science involved in

this sport, a science that entails determining everything from the nature of the waves to the conditions of the day. Within this ''science'' is a certain lingo that is known and understood by each surfer: "Usually, the best time to surf on a good day is down patrol,'' says Raul Cruz. Even the process of measuring the waves has a vocabulary all its own: "knee-high", "waisthigh", "chest-high", "knee to waist high", and "waist to chest high".
What is the "rush" that attracts so many to this sport? "Everytime I go out there in those waters, I enter another world. The only two things that exists out there at that time are me and the waves. The 'rush', for me, is being able to ride that wave even if it's only for a few seconds. I feel as if I'm on top of the world," says Rudy Abaunza. "The rush that I get from surfing is well a rush. I really can't explain that feeling in words. All that I can say is that it is one of the best feelings that I've ever had," says Chis Cuenca.

Sailing is a sport which requires not only strength and dedication, but also a great deal of talent; prerequisites with which sophomore Eddie Vadia is all too familiar. For the last six years, Eddie has dedicated time and effort to perfecting and eventually mastering his sailing abilities. His hard work has culminated, forming him into the incredible sailor he has become. In one year (1993), he managed to place sixth place in the World Trials competition in April, fourth in the Nationals competition during the summer and at the same time, he was appointed captain of the European sailing team. His talent is evident in these accomplishments but is funher heightened by the fact that he had taken a year and a half off preceding these regattas. With only a month's worth of practice, he managed to reach such levels.
''Sometimes I get too intense with sailing and I end up putting too much pressure on myself to outperform my competition, but I think that through time, I will be able to conquer this," he says. With every succesful sportsman, comes a great deal of dicipline and an ever-present infactuation with their sport. Too often, such talented people, like Eddie, develop an arrogance that dominates their mentality. This is something that one will not find in Eddie.
Despite all of his achivements, you will never see him boasting about all he has accomplished. In fact, he would be the last to mention it. He is a very proud person, but at the same time, a very modest one. This mixture of pride and modesty is what makes this Belen sophomore truly exceptional.
The summer of '94 was not as succesful for Eddie as the last due to the fact he was injured with a broken collar bone and was forced to miss practice for over three months. Despite this injury, he decided to sail in the 1994 North America Regatta in Texas, not for the glory of winning but, rather for his love of sailing.
"It's not all about winning for me. I love sailing and the competition that it involves. It has become a part of me and a broken collar bone wasn't going to stop me from doing what I love,'' says Eddie. This love has become the backbone and foundation of the success of this young sailing sensation and hopefully it will lead him to reach his ultimate goal: the Olympics.

SENIORS
SENIOR ENCOUNTER
This year the Senior class shared their greatest experience ever. The Goals of their religous experience, the Encounter, was to increase the unity among the participants and to have them grow closer to God. The encounter was conducted by members of the peer-ministry class.
The backbone of the retreat were the co-directors,

Pablo LaFuente and George Martinez. Together these two students, with the help of the rest of the peerministers, sucessfully organized the best retreat in the school's history. Alex Castellanos had this to say about the Encounter, ''The Encounter created an atmosphere in which we were able to unite as a Senior class."

Mr. Collins pondering a question.
SENIOR SKIT
This year's Senior Skit featured star performances by Carlos "Humpty" Carillo , Ramon Rodriguez, and Arnold Reyes. The Senior Skit's goal was to delight and entertain the rest of the school during Homecoming Week. This goal was achieved through Hard work and determination. TI1e senior class had to balance sports, extracurricular, and school activities in order to produce a show that will be memorable for years to come.
Eddy Gomez had this to say when asked about the Senior Skit, " I especially liked the Troll scene.'' Andrew

Vargas had this to add, ·'The Fr.Eddy scene made me feel funny around my friends because they brought me on stage."
Some other unforgetable sketches were] ose Cervera impersonation of the Bee from Blind Melon, the Columbus scene, the American revolution scene, and the Ancient Greece scene.
The Senior Skit was entertaining and enjoyable and it was an experience I will never forget.
RING CEREMONY
Most of the seniors had been waiting five long years to recieve their rings and their waiting was about to come to an end. They had come this far and their hard work was about to pay off
The excitement which is present in the ceremonial preparation increases as the ceremony gets under way. This excitement is due to great expectations of the future. Receiving the ring, to the seniors, signified their achievement of graduation as well their achievement of high standards. It meant that they had reached the top of the ladder, and they had finished their last year of high school in gruelingly demanding Belen.

As the come together in the school's central patio to celebrate one of the most memorable experiences of their high school years, mixed feelings run throughout the senior class.
After the rings had been given out, the mass is coming to an end, a sad fact came to light. The Senior Ring Ceremony represents the beginning of the end of their senior year.
For the next few days after the ceremony, seniors linger in the hall ways in school, showing off their brand new rings to each other. In what seems like an "ancient" custom, friends roll each others rings around their fingers ninety-five times, and yes they save best friends for last.

SENIOR PROM
Limousines, an ocean-front room in the Doral, a gourmet dish of Shrimp Scampi, tuxedos and the excellent sounds of DJ Vidal and his wheels of steel were just some of the many things that made Prom Night classy, romantic and unforgettable. "Prom was the high-light of the second semester. "It was the party of a lifetime, a time to have fun with all my close friends for the last time," said Orlando Garcia. "It was simply awesome. Something I've been waiting for all through highschool, and it was worth the wait,'' said Alex Raton. It turned out to be what everyone expected it to be.
Seventy seniors attended the occasion at the Doral in Miami Beach. The night of March 31 was tiresome as well was exciting, the dinner and dancing lasted from 8:30-1:30 a.m. and the breakfast at Danny Llerena's house went on until sunrise. "It was the best organized prom I have ever attended." said Hector Garcia. The Seniors were very pleased and they truly feel that it was an unforgettable night.
